I just keep on. I'll just keep on doing it
until until I don't do what I don't know.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
Sounds like a plan.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
That's a great plan. And speaking of the birthday, no, no,
you're not much of a drinker. But howd you celebrate
the seventy fifth?
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Well, I was taken out to dinner, I had a curry, went,
I had a night. In fact, you know, I celebrate
my birthday for the whole month. It's not a day, wait,
a whole year. Yeah, you had a whole year to
celebrate one day. No, I keep. I try and get
as much as I could, you know, for that month.
And I'm planning. There's a place that there's a new,
(01:12):
newest sort of Chinese restaurant in London they called the Shard,
which is like you heard, you heard of it. I
think it's the tallest building in Europe. Yeah. And then
I'm going to a new Chinese place, another Chinese place,
and uh, you know about the show one day was
(01:33):
I was, I think I was going to America and
the shot came up above the clouds. It was the
most It was like something like Ferity, but I didn't
have my camera with me to take it. It was
n't believable. But there you go.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
We Chinese try out in Perth when you come and
one of them is called Billy.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Well listen, one of the nicer world Australia. You know,
in the meeting of people performing your cuisine is unbelievable.
I love, I love, I'm looking forward. That's something I
look forward to very much. And you.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Have to check it out. The food's great. Some beautiful
vegetarian for you.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
It's vegetarian as well, because you know, vegetarian and vegetarian.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
It's got a huge Yeah, you'll be pages and pages. Yeah, yeah,
it's plice to be hometown. But you mentioned you love Maty.
The people, the fans have been very loyal to you,
and they'll they'll be coming out and drives for this show.
But what is it You must be seeing multiple generations
rocking up the gigs now, yeah, I know.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Yes, I see, I see somebody see three or four generations, Grandma, kids, parents, Yes,
I mean it's great, it's great. And the amazing thing
I've seen the kids singing the old song like Lovely
Hurts some.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Red Light and yeah, I know all the words. The
Grammys have just been on just recently. When you watch,
if you do watch the Grammys, does it take you
straight back to that night you picked up one for
Caribbean Coin.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Yeah, it does. I'm looking forward to maybe one day.
I hope it's not my only Grammy. I'd like to
get a couple more, you know, But you know why not.
I mean, it's it's achievements, isn't it. You know? But
maybe wonder who knows, But at least at least if
I don't get another one, I can say at least
I had I have had a Grammy.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Yeah, people as Grammy winning Billy Osha made one.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
That's true.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
That's big.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
No, I've had quite a few awards, you know, like MBS, Grammys,
Ivon no Vello, doctorates. Yeah, I mean yeah, you know,
for somebody who really has had no sort of you know,
academic qualities, I think I've done quite well. I'm quite
I'm quite pleased with some of the I've had in
my life.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
Yeah, what was it like being a twenty six year
old and all of a sudden you're dominating the world's
charts with love really hurts without you. It was nineteen
seventy six.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
I was nervous and still come on, you sort of
come on. That was like, I mean, no'm different, I'm
sort of older confidence, but in them days, oh my god,
it was like please, how do you? How do you
deal with it? You just sort of just sort of
go with the flow, and you sort of everybody's patting
(04:21):
you on the back, Telly, how great you are, and
you have to you really have to see, Yeah, you
have to be very disciplined within yourself and sort of
you know, don't don't sort of don't sort to take it,
don't don't want to take it off for granted, you know,
just sort of realized and treated for what it is
and realize that one day maybe it's not going to
happen anymore. Fortunately enough to have quite a few more
(04:43):
after that. I thought at one time that would be
the only thing, but it wasn't. I mean, I'm still
out here, still recording and still write and still sing
and still enjoy it. Is that true?
Speaker 1 (04:53):
Before you were grabby winning Belly Ocean, you were a
bespoke taylor in London several roads.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Yeah, what definitely was. Yeah, that's not where I got
my suits and things, you know, consider I was working there.
Now that's why I'm buying my suits and all my
nice sharp looking suits. I get it from time time.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
You're very smooth, That's what that's what we're thinking we
think of Robert Palmer, David Bowie, Billy Ocean.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
Yeah that good. Not you know, why not look good? Yes,
it's important to look good. Look you know what, you know,
if you're going to look shabby, why look shabby? Look good? Yeah?
You know you're there. Yeah, Yeah, that's what I say.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
Was there a manager or someone involved, or a record
company involved in giving you the name Billy Ocean or
such not Leslie Cheles, did you know?
Speaker 2 (05:49):
No, No, I did that myself. Yeah, I did that myself,
because you know, no, back in the day, what happens
is that a producer got you, and they wrote the songs,
and they give your name, and they sort of they
sort of treated you like a package and took this
package to the record company. But the problem is, if
anything happened, you never had that name. They took the
(06:09):
name back. So I got vise to all that. And
when once I started writing and learning to write and
do my apprenticeship, I came up with this name, Billy Oshan,
and I thought, you know, I'm going to keep I
like that. I'm going to keep that for whenever, you know,
for whenever it's necessary. And I did. I had lovely hearts.
I took this name out of my back pocket and
that was it.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Yeah, who's that rapper Frank Ocean? I think he must
have been a bit influenced by your name, and he's
tinched it, Billy. Before we let you go, we must
ask you a question we like to ask everyone. Do
you remember the first time you heard yourself on the radio.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Oh yeah, it was the most amazing, amazing thing ever,
because that's the sort of thing you stried for. You
hear the Beatles, you hear the Stones, all these different people,
and one day you hear yourself on the radio. It's like, wow,
it's a dream contry. It's an unbelievable, amazing feeling of
good and bad because suddenly there you are acclaimed in
(07:07):
the radio. But now, how do you deal with it?
Are you prepared for it? You're not a rolling stone,
You're not a You never you know if you're equipped
enough to deal with it. But you know, you do.
You know, you go out there and you do it,
and you sort of become confident as you get older.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
Basically, well, clearly you have because all these years later,
we're going to see you on September seventeen at the
Riverside Theater in the One World to a really ocean.
We can't wait.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Well, look forward to seeing your.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
We'll see you're coming down Georgia's Terrace in your shop.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
So yeah, you bet when I'm on the stage, you
probably won't recognize when I'm not by Thank you, Bye,
