Elliot Yeo dropped in for the last time this footy season as West Coast wrapped up their year over the weekend. Despite a tough run, 36,000 fans packed into Optus Stadium to show their support. Lisa felt the loss to the Swans pretty much summed up the season, while Russell questioned whether the team had the fitness to go the distance. Elliot put it down to a combination of factors — including a big turnover of players throughout the year. Let's just start with the fat that on Saturday night
at Opta Stadium, over thirty six thousand fans still turned
up and they clearly still have faith in their team.

Speaker 4 (00:51):
I know.

So that's that's a huge plus to take away from
a year like this.

Speaker 4 (00:57):
It is it's been like that for a couple of
years now.

Speaker 5 (00:59):
Yeah, and I We've spoken about it a fair bit,
but we do have the best fans and regardless of
what's going on with the team and on field performance
and all that stuff, they just continue to rock up.

And they're the they're the.

Diehards, the light ones, the ones that really are the
ones that we love most and support us when things
aren't going well.

And I'm sure they'll be there when things are going.

We love them and we can't thank them enough.

All right, Well, one hundred and eighteen to fifty one
against the Swans. The game did kind of sum up
the season the Eagles.

Yeah, so promising.

Yeah, I mean it was like two or three goals
with five six minutes left and then they just went woshka.

Speaker 4 (01:41):

She went all right enough playing with them.

Speaker 5 (01:49):
Yeah, the arm wrestled. So look, it was it was
a bit deflating. I wish we could have finished on
better terms. Yeah, I thought we were the last couple
of week. We've been building in the right way. Obviously
the Doggies game was a little bit different. The score
line probably didn't say what we wanted from our KPIs,
But look.

I thought we're going in the right direction.

Speaker 5 (02:13):
But to be able to let Sydney kick five six
goals pretty quick like that, that's yeah, that's deflating.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
Is that a Is that very much? Obviously there was
a lot of inexperience, a lot of experiences off the
field this year, and that's been so much of the problem.
Is it a fitness thing? Do you think that you
just can't maintain four quarters that that's happened a numerous
times this season. What is it?

Speaker 5 (02:37):
You know, I feel like I feel like fitness things
like an easy sort of throw it. There's probably it's
in my personal belief. I believe it's a combination of everything.

Speaker 4 (02:50):
It's not just one.

Speaker 5 (02:51):
So it's just so mental do you think massive massive
footy years a game between the years, and like, if
you're not coming off cooked in the left eggs and
cooked in the brain, like you haven't played a game
of footy, Like you have to make so many decisions
in a split second, because footy you just yeah, you
need to be in this position at this time and
that yep, And like it's yeah, if you're not thinking

(03:13):
your way through the game and you come off mentally cooked,
then you're not playing footy. So yeah, I feel like
there's an element of like, yep, there's sure you could say,
like there's there's fitness, there's understanding roles and executing roles
during game.

Speaker 4 (03:29):
There's basic fundamentals.

Speaker 5 (03:31):
Then there's fundamentals under fatigue and everything as well.

Speaker 4 (03:35):
So there's it's a culmination of everything.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
And we've made a lot about the loss of the
senior players that we had this year. And not to
make excuses, but that was another thing that was just
another like punch after punch after punch to the the team. Yeah,
to the what you said about, you know, between the ears,
to the just to the general sort of vibe.

Speaker 4 (03:57):
Well, yeah it is.

Speaker 5 (03:57):
And I feel like a lot of older players, players
that are probably paid and again we've spoken about this
a fair bit, but the players that have played over
eighty games, two one hundred games, they're kind of they
start to understand and get it, you know what I mean.

Speaker 4 (04:10):
Things become instinctive. You can you can operate at a
high level under fatigue and you kind of know how.

Speaker 5 (04:15):
It works and us and and you can exactly and
then you can start to help others when you're on
the field because you go, all right, well, I know
what I need to do in this instance where I
need to be I know that he needs to be there,
so I can help start to direct and get through.
So yeah, there's there's we've certainly missed that which has
been probably you know, sitting on sidelines. For me, it's
been frustrating as I haven't been able to help in

a variety of different ways. Physically, mentally and tactically as well.
So that's that's kind of killed me sitting on the
sidelines a fair bit, and I'm sure it has for a.

Lot of the older players as well.

Speaker 3 (04:49):
What's the what's the mood like amongst the player? I mean,
obviously everyone's disappointed with the way it ended about, you know,
the season gone, but have people started looking to next
year or as the coach has he just said, guys,
just go away, have a rest and then we're going
to get stuck into it in pre season or is

(05:09):
there already? Is there optimism?

Speaker 5 (05:12):
Yeah, there's always optimism for next year. But basically, yeah,
mini's Mini said that. Now that and we've got to
tell you meeting today, so that'll probably come up again.
But yeah, go away, refresh, recharge your batteries.

Speaker 4 (05:25):

I'm hoping that I have avoided it, but I've got
probably another week or two of testing and then I
will break off the mine. Whereas everyone's kind of done. Now,
I've got a couple more weeks of checking out my ankle.
If I don't and I can't get through, then I'll
have to do there. No twinges, no twinges, nothing. I
actually feel pretty good at the moment.
