Speaker 1 (00:00):
On River nine four nine with money and Campo all
things you've switched with. Mayor Teresa Hardy, mayor, good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Good morning, how are we all great?

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Thank you all to talk about the smell the way
it starts, because I was driving into work this morning's
on the Warrior Ga as you're passing the celtext money.
It's just stinks. It just it's putrich.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
It's like this.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Sweetly stinky smell. It's a sickly sweet smell. It sir like,
it's not a pongy smell. It's a sickly sweet smell.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
It is. And residents in citt Ne's have been putting
up with this and wanting a better deal for over
a decade now. And our council last back in twenty
twenty two for a public health inquiry. It was the
unanimous decision of counsel and that was denied by the
previous government. So you know, I asked the junior election
campaign and the incoming government to do one and they

(00:52):
commenced it back in January, and yesterday in queens and Parliament.
I was there when they handed down the results of
the public health inquiry. And I guess what's really important.
The fact that while the odors have not been there's
evidence now the odors are not causing I'm not toxic
and not causing cancer. The odors are very much causing

(01:14):
negative health and well being impact nause respira RA. So
I think it means a lot to residents the fact
that that they've been listened to and we now have
medical evidence that that this is what has but.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
They're not being listened to. It's been going on for years.
It's been the smells there, you know, and at warts
it's a sickly smell and they need to just dig
it up, get rid of it. Why can't they do that?

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Why?

Speaker 1 (01:43):
Why why do we need an inquiry? Why do we
need an inquiry when we all know what's going on?
Because I guess, sorry, man, we're going to get all
political here. I'm not getting political. I'm talking from it
perspective of just smelling it. It's disgusting, we're all sick
of it. Do something about it.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Draw it out and do all these reports that the
Council are trying to do. The longer it takes to
get the issue sorted mare that's usually the way it goes,
Isn't it inevitable? I think camp's voicing the frustrations of
our community, your frustrations. And yes, I was with the
community group who was getting a briefing on the on
the findings yesterday and they just wanted all to stop. Unfortunately,

(02:22):
there are court orders in place and people have those
property rights. So whilst the two main offending companies do
have to have their composting operations enclosed by September next year,
what is that transition plan? So look, I think this
is a really important step. The fact that often this
group and residents who have complained a fob DOFs and

(02:44):
tell them that's nothing. There's now medical of scientistic evidence
that these owners have a health and well being impact
on these residents.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
Just for the listeners, big step forward, just for the listeners. Mayor,
who's responsible? Is it council, is it state or is
it federal.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
It's the waste companies who were not compliant, so they've
been doing illegal activities and they had been taken to
court by the state government. The state government regulates the
environmental compliances. Council looks after town planning so if their
buildings are too big and all that sort of stuff.
But the state government are responsible for the environmental the
oders and.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
The news and oders and the state government.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
You can see well you can see the last couple
of years. I've just written this down. There's a few
companies that have been figned over the last years and
the state government have taken them to court. So you know,
clean Away we're fined over the six hundred thousand dollars
last year for their non seventh seven ODER nuisance offenses.
WMI with matching Industries were fined over thirteen thousand dollars

(03:40):
in twenty twenty one. A newgro will find out of forty
five thousand dollars in twenty twenty three, so you know
these companies. Legislation has changed, but yes, more needs to
happen in there. Can I just also think the state
government whilst the initial review was just of swam Baker
New Chum, it was sure to say the the Department

(04:00):
have a strong compliance presence in North Ipswich and Carolly
and Tivoli and making sure that the recommendations that have
been made are actually over those areas as well. And
can I just say our council has been very committed
the last five and a half years to this. We
have spent over eight million dollars of rate pays money
on taking waste companies to court. We won two cases,
we lost a third, sort of got a bist finding

(04:23):
on the third one, but we will continue to do everything
we can until those are to stop.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Fair enough, thank you,
