Speaker 1 (00:00):
Valerie the dushound has made headlines after surviving sixteen months
in the Aussie wilderness and from Kangala Wildlife Rescue. Emily
Madden joins us, good morning, Emily, how are you going good?
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Thank you?
Speaker 1 (00:11):
Hell are you very well? You become will famous yourself
a lot of the socials with all your updates on Valerie.
Now tell us about this dog. It was November twenty
twenty three that she went missing.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Yes, so her little family of her mum and dad,
they came ki for a holiday for about a week. Yeah,
and then she got spooks and ran off from her parents,
and her poor parents actually searched for about a week
and unfortunately they had no sightings and she was actually
(00:44):
presumed dead and they actually had to go home. And
it wasn't until about a few months ago that she
was actually unexpectedly seen and we were contacted by her
family to help.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
Wow, it's an incredible story. And you guys have been
doing updates. So have you you've seen Valerie?
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Now?
Speaker 1 (01:02):
How come you can't get close to her?
Speaker 2 (01:04):
So at the moment she's in what we call a
survival note ye, so she will not go near anyone
at all. There is actually chance she actually won't recognize
Josh or George's sence themselves, and so they have actually
been with us every step of the way. They've been
amazing and it was actually only due to a farmer's
(01:25):
fighting that we were actually able to narrow it down
and actually set up a rescue site.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Has a rescue site work? What does it just like
get little bits of food? Or wouldn't all the other
animals on the island We try to get that.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Oh, they do. So we are not only trying to
flick valeries survival switch back over to being a house pete.
We're also competing with possums, wallabies, kangaroos. There was one
night we actually had to go out us so it is.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Very Valerie not getting its kivel.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Yeah, I actually love fru chicken at the moment.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Okay, you've got a menu.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
We do. But the way that the site works is
we actually have a range of cameras set up, all
facing different directions, and we've got one main trap that
we've set up to sort of mimic her home, so
we're actually trying to get her comfortable with that, and
(02:34):
once she started to get comfortable, we have actually been
very lucky to be able to almost set up a
remote trapping system.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
Right, so Georgia and Josh can't get on the island,
just go, Valorie, come on.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
So as much as we would love for that to happen,
there's a little funny thing with dogs. If they can
sense a bit of anxiety yearness from us, humans actually
just keep running and they actually won't respond to their
own name.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Wow, okay, all, I will keep us updated because this
is just incredible. You've been picked up by the New
York Times in the US, and the Guardian and the UK.
It's worldwide this story. So thank you so much for
joining us.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
Firstly, no, you are welcome, and we rely a lot
on the public as well as we are a not
for profit charity sure so everything from the public health
as well, so being able to do this sort of
stuff really does help us. Two, so thank you.
