Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is International Podcast Day and from sixty minutes, Adam
Hagerty has a new podcast called Elva Beach's Desk at
the Door and he joins us, now, good morning, Adam,
how are.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
You good morning? I'm good, how are you too?

Speaker 1 (00:12):
Very well?

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Thank you?

Speaker 1 (00:13):
Now, true crime is very popular in podcasts many and
tell us all about this story because it is a
true story, right, Adam.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Absolutely, And you mentioned that's exactly right off the top
as a journey, some stories you can only tell in
this format, and this story is exactly that. It's so bizarre,
so confusing, so much going on. But we've really relished
the team on this being able to do it on
a podcast. So I mean, in a nutshell and I
can't explain it in a few minutes. But five strangers

(00:42):
never met before, never in trouble with police before this
strange series of circumstances to end up dead tom Baby,
Choric Christmas and killed by a nineteen year old, and
to this day, breathing families can't explain to anyone exactly why.
And that's not good enough. So we're trying to get
to the botto of that.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
And how close have you got to the bottom?

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah, absolutely close. I mean I sat three five days
of the current of in quest back in twenty twenty,
and I remember vividly walking past these families just gutted
because they weren't getting the answers they want. So we've
managed to get our hands on things that haven't been
seen before or the triple zero calls statements body can vision.

(01:23):
And what it does expose is there's so many contradictions
between the stories given by survivors the forensic evidence. And
I'm not sitting here pulling my finger at anyone in particular,
because that's how complicated this story is. You can't necessarily
do that easily. But what it does show is all
the contradictions there. We want to put it out on
the table, and really what the families are calling for

(01:45):
is for the experts to do their job again. They're
calling for another in quest, and they're hoping that what
we've been able to uncover and what we'll be able
to show on this podcast, you know, it helps them
in that endeavor.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
I'm just reading here too that you know one of
the parents, was it Tom who passed? His dad has
said it was just a domino effect of failures right
from the start to first responders, and then as you said,
there was just contradictions in the testimony, he had lawyers
storming out of the inquest. I mean, that's very, very

(02:16):
tough for families already in a horrendous circumstance and then
having all of that trying to get to the bottom
of it to get justice be horrendous.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
What makes it harder for them? You sort of what
I touched on earlier, the young man in nineteen year
old who did stab and kill them. You'll hear on
the calls he's genuinely frightened. But that doesn't mean it
should all be put in the too hard basket. Everyone
deserves answers, particularly the families. So that's what they've been
fighting for. And when he talked about it domino effect,

(02:44):
it's spot on one very small part of it, but
it consists. A significant part is just the fact that
police and paramedics didn't get there in time. All these
contradictions aside that we're digging into, police and paramedics could
have got there an hour before, weren't stopped it all,
and they didn't. So that's just one thing we're getting into.
I mean that alignment has frustrated those parents, yea, with

(03:07):
everything else on top of it, they're just banging their
head against the wall. They just want to be heard.
They want to be listening to and that's what we're
trying to do.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
So that unbelievable. It's like a knives out mystery of
some sort, but it is true. Adam Hegety. Where can
people go to check this out?

Speaker 2 (03:21):
Wherever you want to go, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, wherever you
get your favorite podcast, even the sixty minutes YouTube channel
will have them up to listen to on there, so
you can't miss it. And what I'd just say to
people is go into it with an open mind. The
reason we've done this as a podcast is because it
is so complicated, it's so convoluted, and it requires the
effort that we hope we've given it the people who

(03:43):
have spoken. It takes a lot of courage for them
to put their head up and speed because it is
such a polarizing case. So keep an open mind, give
it a listen, and that's all these families really want.
They just want to be heard.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
The podcast is Elvabeach's Death at the Door. Go and
check it out. Adam Hegetty thank you, thank you much

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Where thanks having on

Stuff You Should Know
Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
