Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to the Robin and Kid podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Corey Oats came in surprise us with his announcement that
he is retiring from professional football. Got very emotional about
it all, especially when you read Teague and his wife's
message to him. But we had so many ex players
ex coaches that wanted to reach out and give words
of wisdom and support to Corey. We didn't actually get
to all of them on air. So we actually recorded
(00:26):
him after the show with a bit with a couple
of extras.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
And I'll give you a little bit of background because
while he was here, they had the Broncos presentation last night,
and he was they were going to do a special
feature around him, and he was concerned that his parents
weren't going to be there. Yeah, so he started to
talk a lot about his parents, and so when we
started to record, I asked him about it. What'd your
dad say? You must have contacted your parents to tell
them before.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
I told mom and dad a long time ago that
this is probably only bit I was on the phone
on me. I couldn't do it just because I would
have broke down, and I to my mum and dad
hear my tactics coming through. You know, as a kid
growing up on the farm, you don't realize until you're
older that, you know, all the work that they've done
(01:12):
was it was so much, you know, like running a
full farm full time. I didn't even know my dad
was a carpenter of builder until I was about thirteen,
you know, and they ran all of our junior sports.
You know, the parents ran our junior sports where I
grew up. And then when we moved like only thirty
(01:33):
minutes out of build a Wheel or Mum used to
drive me all the time to rock Hampton, you know,
during the week to train.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
For club football for what's what's that drive It's.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
About an hour twenty so our ten like you know,
drive there for training twice a week, go there on
a weekend and play and do that. And she did
that for at least, you know, two years until I
got the boarding school. But then when I got picked
in sides and had to go away for cricket, you know,
they drove and still ran a farm and was still
building and carpentry and and then also you know as
(02:06):
kids just having time to do the homework and you know,
just do all that stuff for us kids, and you know,
we just never thought of. You know, you don't think
about it because you know, you just having so much fun.
But when I look back, they know the amount of
time and effort they put in just to give us
the best life and the most enjoyable life and give
(02:26):
us the experience that everyone else will probably get, you know,
closer to the cities and like you know, in the cities,
and that I just, yeah, it's it's something I can
never think them enough for. Obviously, I sort of grow
up trying to be like my old man say.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Let us I know, I know, and it's and I mean,
it's so lovely. But we also have a number of
players and people and friends within rugby league who've sent
you some messages.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Yeah, one of the goats in Jonathan Thurston. We're talking
to him about you wrapping up your career.
Speaker 4 (03:06):
He's been a wonderful servant for the Broncos over many years,
played obviously Origin as well Queensland Origin, so he's the
state extremely well when he's had his opportunities. So yeah,
hopefully he finds another home somewhere. I know that he's
had those injuries of late as well that's really slowed
him down.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
And you know, that well, because you ran right up
until you were held together by duct tape pretty much
you had to get the first out laughing there. Yeah,
but also one of one of the Broncos greats and
know one of your mates, Mat Chollette also had this.
Speaker 5 (03:40):
To say, Garry, congratulations on an outstanding career. Mate, No
doubt you're very proud of your efforts have been able
to represent the Broncos in Queensland. I can remember your
debu and lucky enough to be a part of it.
It's quite the week we had leading into that one
over in New Zealand into a big game in Melbourne.
I'm sure you remember with a lead up like but
(04:00):
not the best pep for and they're all debut but
you've got their mate, So congratulations again.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
What did you do? Prob We can't talk about that,
do you have a couple of cans a couple of days. Lastly,
Darius Boy, we know he's one of your one of
your closest mates.
Speaker 6 (04:20):
Darius Boy here, mate, I'm sure all Broncos fans and
everyone around the Rugula league will would agree. It's sad
to see you finishing up. Exciting times ahead with your family,
but all the opportunities that lie. I head next looking
forward to seeing your shine.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
Mate, just ready to get dabs in the thane.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Yeah, he's just.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
He's one of those quiet guy So I got all
the respect for Darbs and honestly, all three of those
players is that's it's pretty cool. And that's what I said.
It's just one of those things. I never thought i'd
have those type of people talking about me.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
So you deserve it.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
You deserve it.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
Thanks.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
And if you haven't checked out the video on our
Instagram Robin and Kip or Facebook, there's a little highlight
package some of those messages, but also some of Corey's
playing moments where he was just a weapon.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
He was such a high jumper.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
He was a high jumper. I was like, wow, yeah,
just on top of everyone and just down. He's scored
so many tries. There was a time where as a punter,
if you backed him to be an any time try scorer,
guaranteed money.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
There you go. But the good news is he's not
leaving us. You might have left the Broncos, but he
is definitely doing a whole lot of stuff with us,
and we'll tell you more as the day's unfold.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
It's Robin on Brisbane's Kiss
