Speaker 1 (00:01):
Rob and Kid now with Chios the podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
So talking about Troy Selwood and the tragedy that's happened
for his family, and you know he's a father of two.
But you've got a fairly unique perspective of that given
that you've now retired from a professional sport.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Yeah, it's it's all like you know, so many players
like warned me, not warn me, but they just spoke
to me about, you know, always having something to do.
You know how much you're going to struggle because you're
going to miss the game. You're going to miss you know,
the contact, the camaraderie, being around your mates and honestly,
like your whole life is set out from when you
leave school, like you're playing foot remember playing rugby league

(00:42):
and school I left two days later I was training right,
So all I've known is everything's set out, it's planned.

Speaker 4 (00:48):
And also accolades too, like people know who you are
and so respect who you are, and then all of
a sudden you don't have anything that identifies you outside
of your career.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
I reckon that probably does play a small part, like
when you're walking around when you're playing like everyone because
it's like it's you're in the news and you're playing,
and if you're playing, well everyone knows who you are.
And then you know, it can get to a point
where you're walking around and he's so used to it.
But say if you're walking with like one of the
boys that's still playing, they're like coming to a photo.

Speaker 4 (01:18):
With him you but not you.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Yeah, yeah, And.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Then like like that's just that's honestly, and it would
it had hurt, like it really would. And even you
know Monty the other day and cut wet I think
it was, and you know she she sort of said
to me, oh, daddy, you know when you when are
you going to play again? Like play? Are you going
to play foot again? And I just like, nah, I'm

(01:42):
not my dad's they can't. And like she sort of
made me really emotional. And when I when she said
it actually made me cry. It's the first time I
actually thought about all that.

Speaker 4 (01:54):
And and imps your family.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
And yeah, and they just loved it, like they love
being there. You know, she is a montegha. Always when
she went to school, everyone goes that your dad, She goes, yeah,
that's my dad. He plays football, and it's it's sort
of it hits you hard, like you they're still proudy
of it. I don't know. It's it's really hard and
I'm so fortunate, like to come into a job like

(02:18):
this where I can look at it exactly the same,
to be honest, like, you know, we got everyone coaching us,
helping us, running things, and you know where the performers,
and you know you got everyone that you know outside
doing promotionals, sponsorships. It's I've looked at this exact same
way as I looked at a football team.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Yes, it was like a club.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
You've just joined a different club and look, you're.

Speaker 4 (02:41):
The first person to ever do it, Corey. So that's
the reality is every season players get too old or
too injured and they can't keep playing.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
Yeah, and that was me, like, I don't I don't
miss it because I was done. I was so set
on that was being that was my last one. I
just couldn't guard anymore. I really fell out of love
with the game. And that was just purely because my body.
I just couldn't do it, Like I was in so
much pain. I just I'm not enjoying this anymore. But

(03:11):
you see players finish and they still actually loving it.
It's just that nothing came you know, a contract didn't come,
but they still had the love and passion for it.
But yeah, you know sometimes that can be the way
that they leave and that that would be so hard,
Like you know, it's it's really not.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
An easy thing to Yeah, very very few players get
the real the special goodbye, the special farewell where you
go out on a Premiership where you go out on
like the crowd saying farewell.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
A lot of players miss it.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
Yeah, and it's just it's all, you know, my whole life,
leaving school, all I've known is to play football. Someone
give me a sheet that you're training this time, this time,
you're here there, there, you're playing this day, and then
you retire and it's just like what is my purpose?
Like what am I doing tomorrow? Like it's hard, it's
really hard to I'm struggling still now to get into

(04:01):
a routine. Just it's different. But like I said, I'm
lucky to be here to have the same sort of
firm But like a routine in life is so important.

Speaker 4 (04:10):
And if you have mental health issues, they just accelerate
and accumulate. Obviously that's what happened for Troy, so would.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
And yeah, and when you see this sort of stuff.
It's it's so sad, like it really isn't. I really
believe that things need to start changing with I guess
players leaving sports and professional areas, like there needs to
be a pathway then it needs to be a lot
of help because you know, I'm pretty sure he was

(04:40):
still involved with a lot of it, but long yeah,
you know, it still might not have felt the same,
you know, those small things and it's really hard to
see it when these sort of things happen.
