Trying to get an update from Rage and nine year
old Jack her Son, who called to tell me that
he was feeling what I was feeling as a kid
and having no body confidence.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Hey, Rage, good morning, how are you?
Speaker 1 (00:14):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Good mate? Now, you and I have been talking on
text because we're actually friends outside of this show and
this radio program, and you have been telling me some
really awesome things about Jack, and I figured that you
really need to update Kip because since he went to
your place and he was, you know, chatting with Jack
(00:34):
and kind of making him feel better about the world,
some really good stuff has happened. What's going on?
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Look, I want to start by saying thank you to
begin with, because it's really been a continuum. We started
just a few weeks before the radio segment started. You know,
Jack started having those thoughts and those emotions, and then
we heard the segment, which impacted a little bit, but
you know it was the face to face meeting Kip
that really started to shift things. And you know, his

confidence just really rose after that. And then we had
a new neighbor move in the street who happens to
be the same age and he loves playing soccer, So
the two of them are out there kicking the ball
every day. And yeah, his confidence and his outlook on
life I think has really shifted quite a lot. Since
that's all, it's been an amazing, amazing you know a

month or so.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
You said in the text to me at one point, right,
she said, he adores Kip and smiles every time he
sees the picture of you guys on signs. He feels
like Kip is his mate. Now tell Kip he has
less chance of beating Jack next time because of Jackson.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
So all this practice he's doing.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Oh yeah, he's going to take you down next time.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
Oh yeah, because we invented for those that, mister Jack
and I invented a game which we played in your
backyard with this little little sort of set up where
we had to try and kick a soccer ball into it,
and I started getting some fluky shots towards the end.
But he's ready for another round.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Is he He's ready for another round? Yeah? And yeah, no,
it's very cute. When he hears you guys on radio
in the morning on the way to school, he does
he has a little grin on his face, And yeah,
that's really made the world a difference. So thank you.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
You must be mentally proud of time. You must be
immensely proud Rach because he's such a brave kid to
open up and tell us, first of all on air,
but then just make private, then tell me about how
he was feeling about himself. And it's taken me forty
years to do it.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Yeah, yeah, it's no. I am extremely proud of him.
It's it's hard for any of us to open up
about our emotions, especially a young kid. So he's he's
he's been really awesome doing that. It's yeah, And you know,
as a parent, there's so many other things to navigate.
So if you if your child can actually open up
and tell you their feelings, you're you're already a step ahead.
(02:59):
But then you've still got to You've still got to
deal with those feelings and emotions. And I don't think
any of us are equipped with that. So, you know,
any external resources we can draw in, and particularly you know,
the likes of you guys. I mean, that's just been
an absolute blessing, you know, So thank.
Speaker 3 (03:16):

Speaker 2 (03:19):
He is here. He's been a bit unwell, so he's
got a little bit of a croaky voice, but I'll
pass you over. Hi.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
Hey Jack, are you going mate? Good? Excellent?
Speaker 2 (03:31):
Now?

Now when I saw you last time, you were saying
that there was a new kid moving in across the road.
So he's there, and you've got a soccer mate now yeah, excellent.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
I play with the like every day.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
Yeah. And how are you feeling about everything? Mate? And
all the stuff we spoke about about. You know how
you feel when you look in the mirror?
Speaker 3 (03:51):
I feel bad about both them?
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Now? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (03:55):
Why is that?
Speaker 1 (03:56):
Jack?
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Is that because you're you've got a mate?
Speaker 2 (03:58):
Now?
Speaker 3 (03:59):
Why is it? Why has it changed.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Because I've been playing a lot more soccer?
Speaker 1 (04:05):
You're just feeling fitter and stronger.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Yeah, So Jack, what would be your message to other kids,
because you've been through this whole journey, what would you
like other kids to understand from what's happened with you?
Speaker 2 (04:20):
To believe in yourself and need to try hard?
Speaker 3 (04:24):
And how do you do that? You got to work hard?
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Well, really, it's just to just believe in yourself.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Do you remember? Do you know what it is that
sort of got you to this point, made of being
able to believe in yourself and know that you're you're
a good looking young man.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
Well, it's honestly, it's my friend through really just having
someone in your tribe, just someone who does the same
stuff as you do. Yeah, there's a lesson in that
for all of us. Everyone needs a person. Yeah, well, Jack,
how do you feel about kid now better? Did he
(05:02):
beat you? I can't remember? Or did you beat him?
Speaker 1 (05:05):
He beat me?
Speaker 3 (05:06):
Oh you need a rematch mate?
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Are you ready for a rematch soon, Bud?
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (05:10):
All right, it sounds like it sounds like you've been
doing some work on it. I haven't done any practice.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
Luck, good luck, I'm ready.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
I'm ready.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Jack. You've made a lot of difference to a lot
of kids. A lot of people have heard you and
heard your bravery. And you know, we never know on
radio how many people we actually impact, but I know
with you, Jack, you've made a huge difference. So thank
you so much. Well thanks for giving me the opportunity
to speak.
Speaker 2 (05:36):

Well you did it very well, champion, Thanks Jack, Thanks bye.
I the idea have been able to do play that
game like with more people, you know what I mean.
And just because it's it was such a your game.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Yeah, is it the fact that you realized that by playing.
By playing that game, you then had an opportunity to
talk to people.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
Because we sat. First of all, he and I sat
down across the table and started talking with weird, this
is wrong. Let's go and kick the footy. And as
soon as we got over there, bang, just everything opened
up and you.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Just started asking questions and as you're kicking make you
should have let him win. But it's still a good
idea despite your bad baby.

The Burden
The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary.
