Speaker 1 (00:00):
Some tragic news, well really for everyone in Australia but
across the AFL world in particular, is that Troy Sellwood
has passed away. He played seventy five games for the
Brisbane Lions. The implication is that it was mental health.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Was it Isn't he the brother of Joel from the Geelong.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
Cat yep, there was four brothers that played, so their
families really started.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
Less with a talented family.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
Yeah, I don't know him playing, obviously I knew the brothers.
They all played. But look for anyone that leaves sport,
you know, a professional game, where as a team environments
really you know, you've got everything set out for you,
like at the start of your day to Yeah, so
when you leave school, you're still playing sport. If you

(00:43):
do it for a profession for a living, it's still
the same as what it was when you left school.
You don't really learn a lot about the real world
or anything until you leave, and sometimes that's you know,
three years, five years, ten, fifteen, twenty years after you
finish school. But for me, I've felt really lucky, like

(01:05):
I knew that I was done. I wasn't enjoying it anymore,
and I knew that I had to I had to change,
you know, I needed another purpose in life. But to
fall into something like this, it's been you know, saving
graces because I've looked at this like it's the same.
You know, we've got a team, we've got people that
are going to run everything for us, and we've got

(01:25):
to perform. And this is helping me a lot.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
So what about the players that don't have, Like what
happened to you? Because it's pretty rare that you got
straight out of a team, straight out onto radio. So
what about the players that don't The players that play
one hundred games for the Broncos and then all of
a sudden dwindle off into obscurity.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
Well you see a lot of them still hanging around sport, Yeah,
like juniors, or they'll try and you know, come in
and help train or you know that they'll just try
and stay connected a part of it all because it's
all they've known. So many people have struggled, Like I
even know someone now that you know has been struggling
for years, and you know they're still playing, you know,

(02:01):
some footy, some local footy, and it's just because they
love it all, like they love it so much.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
And so what do you do about that though, because
if you know, obviously, if you're saying this based on
your career and you see it in other people in
other sports, and you you're identifying people who are struggling,
how do you actually navigate that so you don't end
up in this exact situation that we're dealing with this morning.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
Oh, it'd honestly be a number of things that you
could be doing, like, you know, hanging out and trying
to catch up constantly with those guys that you played
with and spend all that time with, just have the
stories and chat because that's you still do that a
lot when you go and catch up with people. You
actually chat about the fun stories and the times you
still had play. It like it's just something that you're

(02:46):
always do. And I feel like that is probably one
thing that would help people as always just keep it
in contact, keeping in communication and trying to you know,
stay physical, stay keep training, and probably try and do
it with the people that you would doing it with
while you were playing. I don't know, just for me,
that's that's what I would try and do, and that's
what I'm actually going to try and do, is you know,

(03:08):
start eventually training with some old players and just once
a week, twice a week or whatever. But it's just
to get that feeling, you know, like my life hasn't
completely changed. It's just there's a new purpose. But I
can still have that, you know, that old life still
around me in some capacity. Yeah, it's actually really daunting.

(03:29):
After everyone's sort of settled that to me, I did
get a little bit nervous and worried and scared about
how old feel. But like I said, I feel very
lucky at the moment with how I've transitioned, you know,
straight into something where I still get the same feeling.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
But not everyone does.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
And being a father doesn't seem to have made a difference.
I mean, Troy is a father of two. Obviously we
feel so much for his kids this morning. If you
just joined as Troy Sellwood, who was a former Brisbane
line passed away yesterday. It looks like mental health got
the better of him and his family, including his three
famous AFL brothers. Yeah, all morning him this morning, as

(04:06):
he's the Lions and of course all of the AFL.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Yeah, this is not the answer, people, No.

Speaker 3 (04:11):
I know that's the other thing. Kids, Like when I
was actually retiring. Monte realized she wasn't going to go.
She made me cry, like she's so devastated.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
That she wasn't going to be going to footy and
go out on the field.

Speaker 3 (04:23):
No, even not long ago, she goes, Daddy, when are
you gonna When am I going to get to go
into the club again and see and I get to
watch it train and what made them that's that's done.
It actually made me cry and sad and probably made
me miss it for the first time again. So yeah,
it's hard. It's really hard.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Thirteen eleven fourteen, Ring that number.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
It's Lifeline if ever you need help, and it's Robin
and Kip now with Coreots on Kiss ninety seven three
