Speaker 2 (00:17):
On the free iHeart apps.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
Robin Kidd Now with Coryos the podcast. Now we've got
Teagan's brother, who's Corey's brother in law, Liam on the phone.
Get a Liam.
Speaker 4 (00:32):
Goday, guys.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Now, apparently there's some story that gets told at dinner
parties all the time about Corey.
Speaker 4 (00:40):
Yeah, yeah, there's a few stories that get told about him.
Speaker 5 (00:42):
But yeah, the one of how we first met always
comes up.
Speaker 4 (00:46):
And you think the year was twenty fifteen.
Speaker 5 (00:48):
I was in my final year of my university studies
and Darted lined up with Wayne Bennett at the time
for me to do my final placement at the Bronx.
I'd rock up to work, sit in the physio's office,
chat to the players, go and have coffees, and I
was getting along with everyone like a house on fire.
But there was just one one bloke at the club
that could not stand me by the looks of things
(01:08):
and by his body language.
Speaker 4 (01:10):
And that bloke is one of the blokes sitting in
the studio with me.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Now, wonder why what was going on?
Speaker 5 (01:18):
I didn't know at the time. I didn't know what
I had done to him, and a few of the
boys that I knew there, they would say to me,
you know, if Corey Oates is not talking to you,
then you know he doesn't like it good. He just
doesn't shut up. I've found out. Probably about two weeks
before I finished my prack, my mum and I were
(01:39):
a bit of a catch up over a coffee and
Mom goes, your sister's seeing somebody, and I said, oh,
you know who is it. Have I met him? And
they go, yeah, you've met him.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
We've actually met him quite recently. Actually. He plays for
the Broncos.
Speaker 5 (01:51):
And you know, immediately I start thinking, well, you know,
most of the blokes and the team are married. There's
only a couple who I know aren't in a relationship.
So you know, one of them was actually a really
good friend of mine at the time, Lockie Moranta, and
I said, well, it's not him. He wouldn't do that
to me. And so it just narrowed it down to
one other person. And you know, I said to mom, oh,
please don't tell me that Choryot and.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
She just laughed.
Speaker 5 (02:16):
He goes, yes it is, and short words coming out
of my mouth.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
You're like the one a hole the team.
Speaker 5 (02:24):
I have yet many words like that and words worse
than that. I said, He's given me nothing in the
eight weeks I've been at the club.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
Like he thinks he's God's gifts.
Speaker 5 (02:32):
He's too good to talk to, just a regular bloke,
Like I'm just trying to finish a Uni degree here
and he's just making it so difficult.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
And yeah, well.
Speaker 5 (02:42):
Well mum's having a good giggle at everything I'm saying
because she knew.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
She just goes.
Speaker 5 (02:46):
Do you think the reason he was ignoring you was
because he didn't want you to know that they were
dating yet, and if he did speak to him, he
would have just given it away straight away. So instead
of just him trying to play it cool in front
of me, he just decided, well, I'll just completely ignore
the bloke rave weep and you know that way, I
won't give it away.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
And what I was going through your head, Corey, Yeah,
it was just I couldn't talk. I just felt so
awkward and sleeping with your sister.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
Not tall.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Remember one morning I rocked up because I was usually
first there. Yeah, and he was sitting outside on the
bench because he didn't have a key, and I unlocked
the door and shut. I would have got stuck talking
would I would have just every day I walked into
the visit room him be free and lives like, do
you want something like no.
Speaker 6 (03:36):
Goodness?
Speaker 1 (03:36):
I mean, of all the things I'd say about your Corey,
Oats and ushole is not one of them. But it
sounds like you can turn that stuff on when you
need to.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
Well I just had to.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Yeah, I think that because Teagan was probably just more
scared of let and find out and then Jean.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
So if you knew Liam, you tell your dad.
Speaker 5 (04:00):
He was the topic of conversation. Anyway, when I home
from the Bronx, I go that.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
You know that, you know what?
Speaker 5 (04:05):
Oats has just given me absolutely nothing, you know, don't
pick that you know what?
Speaker 4 (04:09):
Marriage?
Speaker 3 (04:12):
Who affected your career.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
With the big reveal like when he turned up and stuff?
Did you have a conversation? Did you shake hands?
Speaker 5 (04:20):
I've gotten over it by then, I supposed to an extent,
but like if I was of you know, sound health,
I would have absolutely ripped into you. But I was
battling at the time. So yeah, you got to you
got off easy that day.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
You go, is that.
Speaker 5 (04:36):
Twenty sixteen, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
Years ago?
Speaker 2 (04:39):
So your friends forgotten, forgotten Jean out and the door
and said, what are you doing.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
When you're knocked on the door?
Speaker 2 (04:48):
Out just for it?
Speaker 3 (04:49):
Yeah, and Lean's been wide ending figure. That's perfect. That's awesome. Well,
thank you for sharing land. That's an awesome story mate.
Speaker 4 (04:59):
Yeah, I'm happy to do it.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Yeah, and we'll call you for many times for more choreotes.
Speaker 4 (05:04):
Glory please do, I've got plenty more.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
I'm happy to get back at him and anyway I can.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
We want to talk about first awkward meetings or rather
awkward first meeting. So whether it's your partner or your
partner's family, your boss, a famous person.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
Yeah, thirteen one oh six five, if you have had
that thing that is etched in your brain, brain that
still makes your skin crawl because it was.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Just so oks.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
Yes, I still remember this so well. I'm going to
call my girlfriend Sarah to protect the innocent. We had
spent months and months choosing which school we were going
to send our firstborns too. We'd looked at the curriculum,
we'd studied what, you know, the other kids that were there.
We were really excited that our boys were going to
start school together. First day of school, rock up together
(05:52):
we picked each other up, drove to the school together.
The boys were super happy. We walk into the classroom
and I watched Sarah's face go white, and I'm thinking,
what's going on? The kindie teacher is her husband's like
the father of the child. She's dropping off ex wife
(06:16):
who they hadn't seen since she cheated on him and
left ge Okay, his wife is going to teach. She
the ex wife was the cheetah.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
Oh right, she was the cheatah.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
She was the cheatah in a different state.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
Never seen them again.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
And here we are dropping off their firstborn and saying,
please educate.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
My treat this child like you would cheat treat any other. Yeah.
And it was such as that is uncomfortable. I've got
one more.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
And it was just before the Liam incident all happened,
And it was the first time I actually spoke to
Wayne be in his office Until this day. It's still
sort of not right, but it's it's the it is
the moment my whole career change.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
Okay, And it was awkward.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
It was so it's scared that living da perfect after this. Yes, obviously,
Way came back end of fourteen and took over the
coaching roll and I went, oh, this is the best
thing ever, getting cached by weighing at the Bronx and
my holy this is awesome. Love me hopefully. And you know,
the first sort of month or two went by and
(07:33):
he just didn't speak to me, and I didn't get
nothing from it. I was just getting flogged and I
wasn't the fittest guy.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
I hated.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
I hated fitness, I hated all that sort of stuff.
I just couldn't do it. And then he called me
in the office because obviously I was having a wine
of you know, I was probably having a wind about
not getting anything from him or any feedback. And yeah,
he called me in the office and said I heard
you under chat and I said, oh, yeah, I just
just don't know where I stand and if you liked
me or or whatever. I just don't I just don't
(08:02):
know what you think. And he goes, yeah, I don't
like you. That was what he said. I don't like you.
He said, you the next six months to change your mind,
otherwise you got And then he said wow, And that
was my introduction to pretty much talking about did that
make you just go hard shself? Yeah, happened to be honest.
(08:23):
He helped me a lot. Certain thing, he said, Now
don't speak for the next three days. I just stuff that,
like just small things.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Does that work?
Speaker 4 (08:30):
Like?
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Just as why didn't we know that?
Speaker 3 (08:31):
He maga?
Speaker 7 (08:32):
It was just.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
About beating your mind.
Speaker 3 (08:34):
So all right, let's talk about awkward first introductions, whether
it's a partner and boss, partner's family. What do you got, Sammy?
Out kibulcha, Hello, how are you Sammy?
Speaker 1 (08:46):
What happened?
Speaker 7 (08:48):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (08:48):
Well, I was introducing a boyfriend of mine to a
family member that he hadn't met. So we were sitting down
at the dinner table and I said, Hey, any Brenda,
you know this is my boyfriend, Curly And she said,
oh Curly, I on that name, and she proceeded to
figure out that she actually helped raise him when he
was a baby. And then she dropped the bomb that
our families are related.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Oh how related?
Speaker 1 (09:16):
Sam?
Speaker 6 (09:16):
Well, So we spent the next like five to ten minutes,
like with a fine tooth comb, just going through that
and unpacking it. And it turns out we're related on
her husband's side through marriage and not blood related.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
Okay, good to go. Are you still yet?
Speaker 6 (09:30):
Oh no, we actually were funny story. We broke up
and then we didn't know each other for like fifteen
years and we've recently reconnected and we were laughing about
that story on me just there.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
We got at a Naji. What's your your awkward introduction?
Speaker 8 (09:47):
Well, the first time I met my husband's parents, we
were sitting down around the dinner table, and you know
those awkward silent moments. It felt like I had to
fill so I asked them if I had their teeth,
but they had their own teeth, And.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
What a gap fill of that is?
Speaker 4 (10:04):
That's a bit awkward.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
Say that worked for you to day.
Speaker 8 (10:08):
Well, they tell me that at the time, they really
weren't sure how to respond. They weren't really sure about me.
They were thinking, you know, what's this?
Speaker 5 (10:16):
What's this girl?
Speaker 7 (10:18):
All of us.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
Was not well, So let's talk about your dentistry, your
dentures you.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
Rachel and Thymond's what was the awkward meeting when happened?
Speaker 7 (10:37):
Well, I had a bit of a colorful past in
my thirties and my daughter. I had my daughter quite young,
and she told me she'd been dating a guy. And
the first time we went to dinner to meet him
with my husband. It was a guy I had slept
with in my past.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Hang on, wait, what this is the future app my daughters?
Speaker 7 (11:01):
He's actually my son in law now and i'd slept
with him, Okay, hang on, hell, I.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
Know how old was he?
Speaker 7 (11:12):
I was in my thirties, and that he was fourteen
years younger than me. Right, Okay, so i'd had I'd
been out one night, had a drunken night, took him home,
sort of thought nothing of it. And then years later
he didn't realize who that she was my daughter either
(11:34):
And our first meeting, I locked eyes with him and
I just wanted to die.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
Did you tell her?
Speaker 5 (11:41):
She knows?
Speaker 3 (11:42):
She knows, yes, And what was her reaction?
Speaker 7 (11:46):
She was not impressed. It was a bit of a
tense time for the both of us for a while,
but she got over it. She realized that, you know,
back in the day, i'd had you know, I had
a colorful past, and yeah, got over it and they
got married recently twelve years later.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
That isn't like, Wow, they have been able to get
over that. You know, people don't get over someone insulted
me at Christmas? You get over you know what I mean?
That moved on for that is incredible.
Speaker 7 (12:17):
Yes, So they've got two children now and they got
married earlier in the year.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
Did you ever compare notes?
Speaker 7 (12:26):
Definitely not. We left that one guy fair enough.
