Speaker 1 (00:12):
I heard podcasts year more, kiss podcasts, playlists and listen
live on the freeheart app.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
The big news in Brisbane today is the teachers strike
for all the state schools and from ten to thirty
this morning the meeting at south Bank, they'll be marching, protesting.
They've all been already been making theirselves heard and particularly
against Chris ap Philly.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Is going to be a rat mate about that.

Speaker 4 (00:46):
It's very clever.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
I'm a massive supporters of the teachers. I have absolutely
no problem with what they're doing. I feel like this
is something that there has been talks been going on
for months and months and they've broken down. And I
don't care whatever they pay our teachers, they deserve more.
They just do.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:04):
I've seen it firsthand, to be honest, with all the
stuff with Ruguy leg to schools and I've seen how
often the kids are and the teachers can't do anything
about it.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
And I full of support it because.

Speaker 5 (01:14):
You know, and the day they've chosen, you know what,
You've got to make a statement, You've got to make noise,
and they've made noise.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
So yep, that's why they've had to do it today. Well,
in fear of all of us being on the same side. Yeah,
I'm actually on the side of the teachers with this one.
I just think their role is so important and they
should be paid more because we want people to want
We want the smart people in school when you're growing
up to want to do that as a job. They
should be rewarded because it's so important.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
So teachers strike? Is it fair or selfish? Back of Oxley?
What do you reckon?

Speaker 6 (01:46):
Hey?

Speaker 4 (01:46):
Guys?

Speaker 6 (01:46):
Look, I agree that teachers are great human beings, but
this is not fair on either the kids or the parents.
This strike should just not be happening. They chose to
get into this profession. They knew what they were being paid.
I don't get pay rises every year I get there
working with kids, but like I said, their choice.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
They don't get pay rises every year either. And surely
if people are looking after your children, don't you want
them to be happy?

Speaker 6 (02:11):
Yeah? Absolutely, I want them to be happy, But I
also want them to take care of my children. They're
not doing that today, are they?

Speaker 3 (02:16):
So how is it affecting you to day back?

Speaker 6 (02:18):
I've got three kids year one, year two, year six.
They're all at home with me today I've had to
take a day off work.

Speaker 7 (02:24):
I've had to pay for them before and after school care.

Speaker 6 (02:26):
Still, even though they're not going to be there, my
school said to me, yep, you can bring your kids,
but we don't know how many teachers will be there,
so we'll just divvy teachers versus kids up throughout the day. No,
thank you, that's not even supervision.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
Yeah, but beck, how do they get their point across?

Speaker 3 (02:42):
For the rest of us.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
We can go and ask our boss if we can
have a pay rise. Yes, they may say no, but
at least we have a right to be able to
advocate for ourselves. Teachers have to do that. They are
government employees and this is the only way these talks
have been going on for months.

Speaker 6 (02:59):
Well, then get better union rep. Because obviously they're not
doing their jobs, are they. If it's come to this
point and it's taken this long, get better union Rep.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
I still go back to the point back that these
these teachers are teaching your children. So if they're feeling
badly done by and there's enough of them of fifty
thousand to be going through the streets of Brisbane, they're
clearly not happy. Surely you want them to be loving
their job and making your child's experience better.

Speaker 6 (03:27):
Absolutely, I want them to be loving their job. I
want them to be taking care of my kids. Like
I said, they're not doing that today. But it's not
my issue that the government won't listen to what they're doing.
Why are all the parents being like the ones that
have to stay home and take care of the kids
today and try and teach them at home. My kid's
education is at risk, Isn't it like they could be
learning about stuff today that I can't teach them, but

(03:48):
instead they're, you know, at home.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
Beck, I don't think your youngest is going to miss
out on.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
The word w if you put on the magic schoolbush everything.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
Look, I think you will agree to disagree on this one. Back.
I will always advocate, and I think that striking is
one of the things that government employees have to do
to get their point across. But thirteen one oh six'
five do do you think the teachers strike is? Fair
or selfie Sho Forest? Lake what do you?

Speaker 8 (04:14):
Reckon, firstly in response To beck's comment she's a, parent
why should she have to stay home with her, children
she answered her own, question she's the. Parent i'm a
teacher AND i get paid five hours a. Day school
goes for six hours a, day and that doesn't even
include the hours of work That i'm doing outside of, school,

(04:37):
planning setting up, classrooms cutting out things on behalf of
the student, blueing doing, laminating preparing. Lessons most of the
things in my CLASSROOM i have paid for out of
my own. Pocket, NO i can't claim them on Tax
and a lot of the argument with people is that
teachers get school. Holidays we actually work through our. Holidays SO,

(05:01):
i personally and many other teachers go in and set
up our. Classrooms we are planning, lessons we are planning.
Things but it's not just about the Like robin, said
it's about being. Happy AND i am so passionate about my.
Job but my question For beck and other people who
don't agree they get paid eight hours a day to

(05:21):
go to their. Job do they run the risk of
having chairs thrown at, them being spat, at being sworn at?
Constantly do they have to provide all of their own
resources out of their own. Pocket i've had cases Where
i've had ringworms for months on. End i've seen people beaten,
Up i've seen ticks. Abused i've got schools where there

(05:43):
are teacher parents banned from premises because of the way
that they treat. Parents i'm responsible in high grades for
having to teach children how to toilet because parents aren't
doing it. ANYMORE i think it goes beyond What beck is.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Realizing And, Joe, joe without respect for both of. You
if we Got beck back, up would you like to
have a chat to?

Speaker 3 (06:09):
Her? Sure, okay, okay all, right.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
Right BECAUSE i think it's really interesting to get both,
sides and you have, knowledge and she is also a.
PARENT i think it would be an interesting conversation to
flow if you're up for, it and she is.

Speaker 4 (06:23):
Too, Obviously, yeah, sure.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
We got two from. You BTh is it fair or?

Speaker 4 (06:28):
Selfish it's actually, FAIR i believe because my daughter's a.
TEACHER a few years into teaching and one of the
children asked them why are they? Striking and one of
them pointed up and, said, oh for the, money and she, said,
no it's not for the. Money it's for help and

(06:48):
support in the classroom because they get, hit they get thrown,
chairs As joe, said and there's not enough. Support there's
a lot of children with, difficulties behavior, problems learning, difficulties
and WHAT i see go through With my daughter is.

(07:08):
Incredible she Has where she first start at, school she
did probably seven till nine every day for two.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
Years we can till nine till nine, pm.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
Nine pm doing.

Speaker 8 (07:22):
Well that's the thing you think.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
About you you've got homework with ther care of in
school and things like.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
That thank you so, much.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
Se, yeah thank you Su because we've got a couple
of people we, Know i've got very strong opinions that
we need to put together.

Speaker 4 (07:33):
Here.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
Yeah natalie Of, Sangate, also what do you think about?
This is it fair or is it?

Speaker 9 (07:38):
Selfish as a, Teacher it's fair THAT i strike. Today
the job That i'm currently doing is not the JOB
i was trained to. DO i trained almost thirty years. Ago,
now WHEN i first started, teaching you had a group
of children in front of, you twenty four to thirty
children in front of, you who were mostly well behaved

(07:59):
that come in that've sit down and they need are
in big trouble if they did something. Wrong, today you
can have twenty four to thirty children in front of
you and you can tell them to sit, down and
they will.

Speaker 7 (08:09):
Tell you to F you can tell them that they
have to do their work and they will chuck a
chair across the. Room it's not in every, school but
it is in a lot of. Schools And i've got
a lot of friends across the state that the conditions
are so bad and where it's really gone. Down AND
i am not saying anything bad against the neurodivergent. Population
but we have mainstream. Education we have special education all

(08:33):
in the one. Room and when it was put together
about fifteen years, ago you may have had one child
coming out of the special education unit coming into your
class fully supported with a. Teacher we now get about
half an hour a week for that child in the.
Room they sit off to the side of the room
in their own little, desk in a tent or doing
whatever they can scream, out they run, around and they

(08:55):
take the regular teacher's time most of the. Day and
what happens then is the regular teacher who was maintaining
the behavior of the. Class of, course kids are. Kids
they're still.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
Going to muck up a.

Speaker 7 (09:06):
Little you could monitor, that but when you're constantly there
to that child who needs all of your, attention but
it's not just one. Child there's now seven in the
classroom who have extraordinary, needs and you don't have the
support there's no full time aid in the room with.
You you've got large class, numbers and then the workload
that you have to do on top of that is. Phenomenal,

(09:29):
yes the numbers come.

Speaker 3 (09:30):
Down there's a chronic shortage and there's a reason for.

Speaker 1 (09:32):
That thank you so, Much. Natalie now this kind of
all blew up because we had a parent by the
name Of beck Of oxley who said this isn't. Fair
she's at home with her. Kids and then we spoke To,
joe who is a teacher From Forest. Lake these two
guys have agreed to have a conversation. Together Hey, Joe,

(09:52):
Hello Hey, Beck Hi. JOE i guess go. First what
would you like to say To?

Speaker 8 (09:59):
BECK i appreciate where you're coming. From, BECK i, too
am a, parent SO i totally appreciate. It, however WHAT
i think as, PARENTS i think what we need to
be appreciative of is the fact that there's a lot
that goes on behind closed doors in. Schools that is

(10:19):
what we are fighting. For AND i myself was torn
as to whether to take today off and strike or,
not BECAUSE i want to be with the, Children but
at the same, time things are not going to improve
if we don't take a stand and, yeah, Sorry, BECK i.

Speaker 6 (10:41):
Just think that it shouldn't have got to this point
in the first.

Speaker 4 (10:43):
Place.

Speaker 6 (10:43):
THOUGH i appreciate that you guys do deal with a
lot as, teachers but this should have been dealt with months,
ago and not in a way that it affects parents
across the entire. State there are a lot of bosses
out there that will potentially fire these people today because
they're just that type of. Boss you could be at
risk of losing a. Job you could end up and
not being able to pay bills for this week because

(11:04):
you've had to take a day off your casual work
to keep the kids. Home it's just not fair on the.

Speaker 8 (11:09):
Parents, yeah AND i totally get, That but do you
understand back that every teacher that is striking today is
also not getting. Paid so we are not getting paid
for striking. Today that's your.

Speaker 6 (11:22):
Choice it's not my. Choice it's not my choice to
take a day off my casual, job for, instance because
you guys have decided to, strike you guys chose to
take a day on. Paid you have the option to
go in today and be. Paid, STILL i understand that
it's not fully your fault as, teachers but this should
have been dealt with months. Ago this should not have
got to the point where the parents are now having

(11:43):
to keep the kids home and a strike is.

Speaker 8 (11:45):
Happening, Yep AND i appreciate, that and that is on the.
Government but you are a. Parent it is your responsibility
to care for your children for first and. Foremost it
IS i am struck with parents now that want teachers
to do their jobs for. Them it is you are the.
Parent SO i am a. PARENT i am responsible when

(12:09):
my children are. SICK i need to take a day
off school when my children it's like any other. Job
but we get paid five hours a day to do the,
work Like suja, said from seven am to nine pm
at night to.

Speaker 1 (12:23):
Get five hours pay if you work six. HOURS i
don't understand.

Speaker 8 (12:27):
That that is what teachers get paid twenty five hours a,
week and that is what people are. Missing the point
of a school day in, itself in front of the,
children goes for six hours a. Day and, no we
don't get two lunch breaks a day because we have
to do, duties because somebody has to supervise and care
for the children while they're outing the playground and while they're.

(12:48):
Eating people get paid for five hours a, day and
if you on a contract and not a permanent staff,
member you don't get paid through, holidays but you are
expected to still stump up and do report cards and
parent teacher interviews and all of that sort of.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
Stuff let's hope we got a result out of. TODAY
i love say that this strike at least something's going
to happen from. It thank You, Back thank You. Joe
you both spoke brilliantly and we really appreciate you getting
being a big part of the.
