Speaker 1 (00:01):
Our next guest is a drama turned singer, songwriter and producer.
They're married to the selling Sunset actress Chris elle Stous.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
I don't think either one of us foresaw where this
ended out.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
I think I was written in the stars.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
They've just announced a tour, an upcoming album, and the
new single, The Worst Person Alive is out now today.
Robin Terry and Kid welcome, g Flip.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
What's up there are we doing.

Speaker 4 (00:28):
I'm so glad you wore a sleeveless shirt so we
can check out your ink. Oh my goodness, you've got
a lot going on.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
I do.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
I'm actually I think while I'm on this little road
trip across Australia, I should get some more.

Speaker 5 (00:38):
So I thought you wanted to play NRL complete the
full lead. I want to try to play for any
football team.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Yeah, we're gonna have to work on that.

Speaker 4 (00:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Do you guys have tattoos?

Speaker 6 (00:48):
Robert Rome, I've got angel wings at the back of
my neck, which one day I will manifest and create
my own and flyway.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
Oh I love that.

Speaker 4 (00:57):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (00:57):
And I have my husband's.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
Oh my god, that's so cute.

Speaker 6 (01:02):
Yeah, and his name and then I've got a star
to represent.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
I love that.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
My favorite tattoo is Kylie thinks I'm cute because Kylie
Minogue once said in an interview that I was cute
woo in the.

Speaker 4 (01:14):
Hour was straightaway?

Speaker 3 (01:16):
Yeah, it was like an hour later I got that taboo.

Speaker 7 (01:18):
Did get a signature.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
You know, that's just my handwriting.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
So I heard that she said I was cute Kylie Minogue,
and then when i't got that tattoo an hour later.

Speaker 4 (01:28):
Yeah, you don't muck around. And do you have to
explain to Americans what Go Go Pies means.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Yes, I've actually tried to convert a lot of people
to love AFL.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
It's not going too well.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
People aren't up for staying up till three am to
watch games.

Speaker 6 (01:42):
I was just about to say, I mean just checking
out Chrishel's I mean, look, I'm watching you now. You're
in a Pies jersey like you wear that often.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yes, well, I watch every game every week. I'm a
die hard fan. I never miss a game. I also
then the next morning watched the replay.

Speaker 6 (01:56):
But you and what do you do commentary?

Speaker 3 (01:59):
What why are you watching it twice? Because I love footy?

Speaker 2 (02:02):
But you know, also I feel like it's just so
Australian and it even has the Australian ads, and I
miss home a lot, so it's so like nice to
watch just in hearing all the Aussie accents in all
our ads and stuff.

Speaker 7 (02:14):
Yeah, my son was.

Speaker 5 (02:16):
Down in Melbourne and he didn't actually have a team
until he found out he was going to be studying
down in Melbourne. So he and I watched the Lions
game on KO together and that's how we catch.

Speaker 7 (02:24):
Up with each other.

Speaker 5 (02:25):
Oh kay, but a quarter a time and halftime his
mother gets to come and ask him how's your ran to,
how's your girlfriend, how's your.

Speaker 7 (02:29):
Job and your studies? And he's always got the ad
to go games back on.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
Yes, yeah yeah.

Speaker 4 (02:35):
What about Krischelle? Have you managed to convert her toes?
She watching?

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Yeah, she watches with me. Sometimes she dozes off, you
know because the games are so late. Yeah, and she's
not as into it as me. But she's never really
enjoyed sports too much. But she thinks that AFL is
such an unhinged game, and so like ADHD, you know,
it's so all over the place, you know, because over
there they're used to their NFL, which is so stop
and start where it's just such a continuous sports.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
So yeah, she likes it. She gets around it. She's
got a little jersey she puts on.

Speaker 4 (03:04):
Yah.

Speaker 5 (03:05):
And the great thing is that the Pies are winning
so much, we remember how much we don't like the Pies.

Speaker 7 (03:11):
Yeah, and all those other people.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
I'm having a great time. The number one on the ladder,
the number one. We're looking great. I actually got to
go to the rooms.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
I flew in on Friday and we just we had
a game on Friday night, so I went straight from
filming at the projects straight to the game. I have
my jersey on, straight to the game. I got to
meet the players. And I'm not someone who gets starstruck. Ever,
I don't think I've ever got starstruck, probably calling the
players and Dave Girl the only people to get starstruck about.
And I got to go to the rooms and all
the players are saying hi. And I'm not a person

(03:41):
that gets speechless, but I was a bit quiet.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
I was a bit like.

Speaker 5 (03:46):
Mason with a strap on glasses and make him look
like a superhero the whole time.

Speaker 7 (03:49):
But he's actually from the States, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
Yeah, he's from Texas. He's a Texas boy. Really, yeah,
he's I think he's the only American football So it's
krishelle Cox's favorite player.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Yes, but he talks probably yeah, but.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Yeah, it's great that we've got American in the league
and he plays for my team.

Speaker 4 (04:09):
That must be the first tripe.

Speaker 3 (04:11):
I'm pretty sure he is the first, which is awesome.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
His story, he was in college like good at soccer,
and then we did some AFL did some scouting over
in the States and he was so tall but so
quick on his feet and had just great skills. So
we got him over and he's been at the Pies
ever since.

Speaker 7 (04:29):
Rather than so typical you girls getting here, you talk
sport the whole time.

Speaker 4 (04:36):
How do you divide your time between the States and here?
Are you there pretty much like nine percent of the time.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
Or no, I think I do about.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
Like little under half a year, so like six months
over here or seven months over here, or you know,
you know, about four or five months.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
I think I'm on ground. But it's always different.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Every year is different because of touring and like different
things I come back for. But yeah, it's kind of
devit half half.

Speaker 6 (05:02):
How did you meet Krishelle? I mean, I saw you.
It was the first episode of season six of Selling
Sunset that you guys are in the studio together. Yes, mate,
Can I tell you that was the coolest thing. Like
I Kip and I completely addicted to Selling Sunset. But
there's something so out of this world about how those
people live. And and then you're on there and I know,

(05:24):
thank god something happened and walked in.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
I know, it's really weird that I'm on that show.
I think it is quite bizarre myself. But no mean,
Krishelle met a couple of years ago through Tones and
I the artist. Tones was looking for a house and
was a fan of the show, and I think DMed
Kroshchelle about looking at some houses and then just through

(05:51):
her we met. And then it wasn't until months later.
Then we were at a party together and then some
flooding went down.

Speaker 6 (05:59):
Who flooded first?

Speaker 3 (06:00):
It was definitely me.

Speaker 4 (06:03):
Well, at the end of the last season, I know
you're probably not allowed to give stuff away, it sounded
like it was like Krashelle was leaving and she was
going to be coming with you to Australia.

Speaker 7 (06:11):
It was all going to be over.

Speaker 4 (06:12):
But then all of a sudden, I saw her like
in like for shots for the next season, So so
what can you tell us anything. It's all happening.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
It's kind of bizarre because it's all filmed so long ago, right,
So so we're up to season seven is the next season,
but like you know, it's already been, everything's already filmed,
so okay, it's yeah, it's weird to talk about because
it's like, oh, that happened, like the shot of us
in the studio that happened ages ago.

Speaker 4 (06:41):
Yeah, you guys haven't broken up, have you.

Speaker 7 (06:43):
I'm sorry if I'm talking.

Speaker 6 (06:45):
You're married, don't you.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
Yeah, we're still good, we're still together. I can't wait.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
I go back to La in like one week, two days,
and I can't wait.

Speaker 6 (06:54):
You're counting.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
I'm not counting her anything.

Speaker 4 (06:58):
Okay, So you'll go back and then you'll come back
for your tour.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Yeah yeah, okay, yeah, so go over, have some stuff
to do, mean because you're actually going on a little holiday.
We even had a break together for a while, so
we're gonna go on a little holiday.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
Then I'll be back for August.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
So my album comes out August eleventh, and then yeah,
you got all shows around Australia, which is cool.

Speaker 5 (07:19):
We did say the pie is at the top of
the table if you checked when the Grand Final is
and love with Yourself for.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
A scene, do you know what I'm the Grand Final
is during my US tour. But when we were putting
the dates together, I made sure that I had that
weekend free to fly home and then fly straight back
to tour.

Speaker 6 (07:38):
Unlike Michael Boublay who happened to perform here in Brisbane
on the night.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
Of the decider of state of Origin. Oh really, I
did not know at home.

Speaker 6 (07:48):
We told him he lost his shoes.

Speaker 4 (07:53):
So okay, So we're going to talk about the brand
new single. This is the lead up single, be Your
Man yep. In the film clip for this, you're off
the drums. You're just on the mic out the front

(08:13):
of the band.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
Yeah, there's yeah, I'm doing a few things. I do
a little guitar solo in that music video. I do
start a little bit on drums, but then yeah, I've
got the old school fifty style mic and I'm having
a big sing.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
But yeah.

Speaker 4 (08:28):
So what do you do when you do your shows?
Do you do a little bit of that? Do you
have a drummer that'll occasionally step in for when you're
going to sing or do you generally stay on the drums?
What do you do?

Speaker 2 (08:37):
Yeah, so most of the time I'm on the kit.
I normally open up the show with a big drum solo.
I do a few songs singing behind the drum kit,
and then I have my mate Ben, who jumps on
kit when I get off, So I'll jump off the
drum kit and then I'll be running around. I'll grab
a guitar, I'll do a guitar solo, I play piano,
So I kind of just go back and forth off
the drum kit and then onto other instruments.

Speaker 7 (08:57):
Is it easy for Ben to be playing drums and
you're bet?

Speaker 1 (09:04):
Now?

Speaker 3 (09:04):
He's good.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
Ben's actually, I think the best drummer in Australia. So yeah,
it's fun to you know, he teaches me things. So
I like having him part of the band because he
also you know, makes me, you know, want to be
a better drummer and a better musician.

Speaker 6 (09:20):
So gee, we're doing over the next month, we're doing
outside broadcasts in schools. Cool and I mean clearly your
musical stuff started in school.

Speaker 7 (09:30):
Is that fair?

Speaker 3 (09:31):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (09:31):
Were you really supported to get out and do the
stuff you wanted to do.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
Yeah, I have one person that changed my life and
is the whole reason that I'm here today, and it's
my drum teacher in high school named Jenny. She's passed away,
but she literally changed my whole life. I met her
in year seven and started taking lessons, and she was
the first person that I looked up to because there

(09:57):
wasn't many people like you know, like me, or looked
like me, or dressed like me. Back when I was
growing up. You know, I was watching a rage and
MTV and all the females on TV were all, you know,
shaking their booty wearing dresses, and I wanted to take
my top off and drum like Travis Barker. So my
drum teacher, Jenny had such an influence on me and

(10:17):
was the first person I looked up to. So it's
amazing how you know when your brain is forming and molding,
how much you know a teacher can actually change your life.
And she encouraged me and told me that drums can
lead you to great places and can be a career.
And then another music teacher, Gavin Gavin Cassidy in high school.

(10:38):
He also really encouraged me. And you know, me and
him would just jam in the music room together growing up,
and he, you know, told me how much of an
amazing musician I wasn't really inspired me. So definitely, teachers
can change your life.

Speaker 6 (10:52):
And also, like being you know, non binary, there wouldn't
have been people in your school that you could have
or even I'm just trying to think any like ten
years ago, fifteen years ago, there was no one that
you could have gone, I want to be like them.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
No, one hundred percent. You know, since coming out non binary,
you know, I feel so euphoric and so comfortable in
my skin. But we weren't educated about, you know, gender diversity.
Back when I was growing up, it wasn't a thing.
And I think it's great now that you know, people
are talking about it, having conversations about it. You know,

(11:26):
I've met just on this road trip going through and
meeting people I've met, you know, teenagers who identify as
non binary, and you know, they thanked me, and like
a few times, I've been crying meeting lots of fans
on this road trip I'm doing because you know, they
say such heartwarming things like if it wasn't for you,
I wouldn't have understand my gender identity, and I've grown
up so confused and stuff like that is really the

(11:49):
backbone of why I work so hard and do this
because I'd never had anyone growing up. When I was
watching that TV sceneing, you know, the prison cat dolls
and Christina Aguilera, there wasn't anyone like me. So a
big part of my project, although I just love music
and love performing, is that I want to be that
role model that I never had when I was a kid,
and you know did what Jenny did for me. Jenny

(12:11):
my drum teacher, really you know, saved me and gave me,
you know, someone to look up to. So I want
to be that for you know, the kids, the next generation.

Speaker 6 (12:19):
So what would your advice be, because we're visiting schools
here are going to be kids that are struggling in
that no one knows.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
Yeah, what would you say?

Speaker 2 (12:28):
Oh, I'd say, you know, if you're confused. I remember
growing up, I was very confused about my gender and
my sexuality, and I kept a lot of things inside.
I went to a like Catholic school where all girls
Catholic school, where you know, I didn't feel comfortable sharing anything.
And I think the main thing to know is like
when you're growing up as a kid, it's okay to
be confused and not understand and not know. Like being

(12:50):
confused is okay and you don't need all the answers.
Like on the day you know you're growing up, you're
figuring yourself out. You know, let your life play out
and you know, and if you feel safe to talk
about it, make sure you're in a safe circle with
people that you trust and that you can talk to.
But you know, take your time. Nothing has to be
decided then, and you're growing up and look at you now,

(13:13):
Oh thanks mate.

Speaker 5 (13:15):
Just in terms of your parents when they had these
you learned through your life these two very very inspiring
teachers that almost sort of wish that those teachers had
played flute.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
My dad, my parents are both accountants. Yeah, but my dad,
my dad didn't want to be accountant. He wanted to
be a rock star. So he's pretty stoked. He's been
very supportive growing up. You know. I remember when I
was twelve years old, did my first few drum lessons.
Dad would be on a Saturday after I played netball,

(13:48):
would be like, let's jam and I'd be like Dad,
like I don't know how to jam yet, and you'd
be on the guitar and then, you know, my first
memories of like really playing music was his dad in
the garage.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
He's trying to make me jam.

Speaker 2 (13:59):
So I've got him on stage a couple of times
and we just we cry together because it's like I
remember when I was fourteen, I said, Dad, one day,
I'm going to bring you out on stage in front
of thousands of people.

Speaker 3 (14:09):
And I kept my word. So I got to do
that with him, which is pretty special.

Speaker 4 (14:12):
It's cool.

Speaker 6 (14:13):
Cool.

Speaker 4 (14:13):
Have you got any tatts for you? You should get
a calculator for your parents.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
Yeah, I know, I've got a few.

Speaker 7 (14:20):
I've got.

Speaker 2 (14:20):
I've got Jenny tattooed on my neck. I've got Gavin,
my drum teacher, tattooed here and m for my dad.

Speaker 3 (14:26):
I've got my.

Speaker 2 (14:28):
Me and Krishelle have skeleton tattoos because when we met,
we were at a Halloween party and we're both dressed
up as skeleton. Yeah, except she was a really pretty skeleton.
I was like a fifteen dollars one fifteen costumes.

Speaker 7 (14:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
We Yeah, I've got a lot of tattoos. I'm definitely
going to get some tattoos this week. I've already booked
some in what I think I'm going to get someone
my neck, which my mum's not that happy about.

Speaker 4 (14:51):
But you never hide those, you can't hide them.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
Well, I've got my hands tattooed now and now my
legs are everything tattoo.

Speaker 6 (15:00):
Yeah, it's got his current girlfriend's face tattooed on he's
his face.

Speaker 3 (15:07):
Well, I'm probably not going to do that, but.

Speaker 6 (15:12):
Not serious.

Speaker 7 (15:13):
Yeah, relationship, Yeah I'm not.

Speaker 3 (15:15):
I'm not getting not getting her face tattooed on me.

Speaker 4 (15:18):
Yeah, it's his whole his whole cheek is yellow yellow
his girlfriend. I'll see if I can find that's.

Speaker 3 (15:23):
A very committed Yeah, that's that's a lot of commitment.

Speaker 4 (15:27):
How would you feel if Chrishelle got your face tattooed
on her face? Would you? Would you enjoy that?

Speaker 3 (15:31):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (15:34):
Look, if she really wanted to do that, like, you know,
it's her body. She can do whatever she wants. I
advise against it, though, Oh my, I know, it's just insane.

Speaker 4 (15:46):
Imagine just looking at yourself every time you looked at
your girlfriend.

Speaker 3 (15:49):
It's so we we cannot believe that. Yeah, she could
kiss herself. That's a wild decision.

Speaker 4 (15:56):
That is wild, isn't it. This is someone who's got
covert is tattoos goes.

Speaker 7 (16:00):
Now that's what.

Speaker 3 (16:03):
Yeah, that is very wild and we support him.

Speaker 4 (16:05):
Yes, now we should play This is a bit of
the new single I'm the Worst Person Alive.

Speaker 8 (16:10):
I suppose you used to show me baby?

Speaker 6 (16:42):
Do you like hearing yourself.

Speaker 3 (16:45):
Normally? I don't knocking out though.

Speaker 2 (16:48):
You know most people you know who are musicians, you
never want to listen to your own songs, and once
you release it, you actually never listen to it again.
That this song, The Worst Person Alive is the first
song I've ever released that I actually really enjoy.

Speaker 6 (17:02):
Yeah. Really, why do you think why this one.

Speaker 4 (17:04):
Such a breakup song?

Speaker 2 (17:06):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (17:06):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (17:07):
There's something about it. I grew up listening to a
lot of Bruce Springsteen with my dad, and a lot
of the production elements, you know, a bit born to Run,
a bit Bruce Springsteen esque, And I feel like it's
a song that for me, you can't really just the
production on. It isn't a timestamp to like a decade
or it's just music and it's just playing instruments. And

(17:30):
I recorded that in my house in La, just you know,
I'm putting it. I was putting an album together. My
album comes out in a couple of weeks on August eleventh,
and that song, there's always stories. It's like the last
song that gets added to the album, Like that song
wasn't meant to be on the album, and then just
we wrote it, you know, in a de Me and
my mate who lives in Brizzy name Aid, and we

(17:52):
were just jamming in the house and then that song
just came out of nowhere. And now, yeah, it's just
a song. I kind of like of my own. Most
of the song I have, I don't really like.

Speaker 7 (18:02):
Now one that I like.

Speaker 6 (18:04):
Finally, Gee, where would you be in five years?

Speaker 3 (18:07):
Do you reckon five years?

Speaker 2 (18:10):
I think I'll still be living between La and Melbourne,
still doing music. Of course, I really want to start
producing for other artists and writing for other artists. I
feel like, growing up, before I got into gee flip
and stuff, I was a music teacher, so I was

(18:30):
teaching kids drums and piano and guitar. So I like
working with younger artists who are just getting thrusted into
the music industry and just being with them in the
studio and you know, teaching them some stuff.

Speaker 3 (18:41):
So a little bit of that. I want to try acting.
I want to give that a go.

Speaker 2 (18:45):
I want to write a musical one day. Do you
want kids, Yeah, definitely want to have kids. So yeah,
I have a family. My sister's pregnant at the moment,
so it'd be cool to have some kids one day
and have some little cousins whippos running around.

Speaker 5 (19:06):
Do you think in five years time you'll be over
the heartbreak of the fact of the Brisbane Lines rolled Collingwood
in the Grand Finalists, by them leaving the whole year
to happen.

Speaker 7 (19:14):
That's what's going to happen. Take it down.

Speaker 3 (19:17):
Look at you. I'm sorry, I must say Collingwood.

Speaker 2 (19:22):
You know when we travel, when we play over here
in brisye, we do find it hard to playing the
Brisbane Lines at the Gabba, so it's a harder game.

Speaker 3 (19:30):
But I think the way we're.

Speaker 2 (19:32):
Going at the moment and just our roster and you know,
Mickflies coaching and everything we're doing right now is pretty special.
And there's just there's something special going on in the
waters at Collingwood and I think this is our year.

Speaker 7 (19:44):
Mate.

Speaker 4 (19:45):
You notice Terry kept that for the end of the interview,
just in case you walk out.

Speaker 7 (19:51):
This is over.

Speaker 3 (19:51):
I'm done.

Speaker 4 (19:53):
So the Drama tour has been announced. You can check
the website for that. That's the true in August and
September and the BREA new album, Drummer, is out eleventh
of August. Thanks so much for joining us.

Speaker 3 (20:03):
G Flip, nice dress. Thank you for having me. Crue

I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
