Speaker 1 (00:01):
Wake Up with Robin and Kid.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
It's Robin and Kim joined in studio by Mel Bustle.
Speaker 3 (00:09):
You know I love to come in here.
Speaker 4 (00:10):
I know we do love it and it kind of
appropriate to have Taylor Swift singing. Is it over now?
Because over the last two weeks we have been building
Sizzler for Brisbane. It was very clear, very quickly that
Brisbane wanted Sizzler back and it wasn't just the cheesy
toast they missed. So we have been trying to create
(00:31):
the Sizzler experience with a pop up store. We've named
the date that we were going to do it. Today
was going to be the day where we gave out
the first tickets the money can't buy tickets.
Speaker 5 (00:41):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (00:42):
Then overnight we received an email and basically the email
said that the brand Sizzler still exists in Australia even
though they don't have any stores here anymore problematic Yeah,
because a company by the name of the Minor Group
owns the city is brand in Australia and the words
(01:03):
trademark infringement started to be thrown around. So to get
to the bottom of this and to see what it's
going to mean for bringing Sizzler back to Brisbane. We
have tracked down Scott Mannelli, who is the CEO of
the Minor group.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Scott, good morning, good morning.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
Hell are we Wow, We're great, But geez, you've certainly
changed a lot of things for us in the last
twenty four hours.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
I know, it's a very exciting time. We love the
fact that so much groundswell about the brand.
Speaker 5 (01:37):
It's awesome.
Speaker 4 (01:38):
Okay, But Sisler still exists in Australia. We thought it
was shut down. We thought that Colin's Food Group had
gotten out of Sizzler and that it no longer existed here.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Well, that is partly true. So Colin's Foods is out.
Minor bought Sisla from them almost exactly twelve months ago.
So on the thirtieth of June last year, we bought
it from them. We have seventy five stores over in Asia.
But we've got the brand rights still here.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
Okay, So what does that mean for us?
Speaker 1 (02:11):
What does it mean for you when right now?
Speaker 4 (02:13):
Well, yeah, because we were you know, we were not
trying to step on anyone's toes. We didn't realize that
there was any sort of trademark infringement. We just we
just handed out cheesy toast and Brisbane loved it, yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Which which we think is exciting and awesome. And you
know all of that, you know, we can see that
there's great intent, you know, behind all of this, and
you know, I guess we're sort of going along with that.
Speaker 4 (02:37):
Okay, So what does that mean? Obviously we can't continue
down the route that we were going down because you
have all the rights for this, and we can't have
any sort of trademark infringements. We were having a Sissa
popp up we were going to do.
Speaker 6 (02:53):
We're bringing it back for one night only and now
I don't think but we.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
Want to do it with you, like if you'd be
willing to come with us and let us do something
because clearly the people of Brisbane are just so excited
about Sizzler and if you own the rights, I mean,
I guess in the last couple of weeks, we've just
done a huge amount of market research for you.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
You have you have done a huge amount of market
research for us, So you know that's incredible from our perspectives.
You what we've heard is that you've already said to
the listeners that we're going to do or you know,
you're going to try and do a Sizzler pop up
on the eleventh of July. And so what we'd love
to be able to do is jump on board with
(03:37):
you and do everything we can to get that to happen.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
So you're not going to shut us down.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
No, no, we're not going to shut it down. We'd
love to actually help bring this to life. We've still
got whole Sizzler employees that you know, we're at Sizzler
for twenty plus years, so they still working for us. Really,
what are they doing? So they're now they're now working
under a different brand.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
So okay, I just had this image of this room
full of old people.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Every time there's a staff meeting, they roll out the.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
Sizzling stuff and make cheesy it sounds right, it's mail here.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
I'm a big Sizzler addict. And the stores are still
open overseas, right, is the menu the same as what
we had in Australia or is it different? Because like,
do they like potato skins?
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Actually they love potato skins overseas and cheesy toast. Cheesy
toast is crazy over there. So and you know we've
got a cheese toast mascot We've got you know, cheese, toast, cushions,
all sorts of things. It is crazy.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
We are getting into Sizzler tourism and.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
Just yeah, we think so, we think so there's a
good full time merch shop. I think we could open.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
Okay, So basically what I understand from you is this
that we can continue down a road. We need some
time to work out how to do this, but you
have staff, you have merchandise, and we have the people
of Brisbane who desperately want it.
Speaker 5 (05:10):
You bet you.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
So we're going to work really hard over the next
couple of weeks and we'll do all we can to
bring the best Sizzler pop up back to town that
we can. Let's good, Yes, Scott, wake up with Robin
and Kid.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
Can we talk about Sizzler because it has been something
that has absolutely occupied not only our brains here in
Robin and Kip Show, but also the whole of Brisbane.
And I wanted to just remind you how this whole
thing unfolded.
Speaker 6 (05:44):
Robin and Kipp asked Brisbane, Hey, guys, what are you missing?
Speaker 4 (05:49):
So many people responded with the same answer, and that
was Sizzler. Yeah, and particularly cheesy toast.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Then We had this call from Melissa at Logan Reserve.
Speaker 5 (05:57):
A guy in Dalfink is bringing out his own version
of esy toast. He's serving it up for free between
the tenth and the sixteenth of June.
Speaker 6 (06:06):
So we decided to take matters into our own hands.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
How would you feel if you opened early for us
on Monday morning and anyone who wants cheese toast can
come and have some?
Speaker 6 (06:19):
Well, Robin did, Okay, you're ready.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
Let me see if you can hear the crunch. Okay,
you tastes exactly like I did. We took it to
the street and this lovely lady has pulled one high.
Speaker 5 (06:31):
What's your name?
Speaker 3 (06:31):
My name's Louise, and Louise, what do you think?
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Oh, it's fantastic. It's about time I got it back.
Speaker 4 (06:36):
There you go, time we got it back.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Really, lust one used to take me to Sizzleist for
my date nights.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Can you believe it? Oh?
Speaker 4 (06:43):
And does it remind you of that?
Speaker 2 (06:44):
Oh? God?
Speaker 1 (06:45):
You might get lucky.
Speaker 6 (06:48):
But the nostalgia didn't stop at Geddon Lucky. It got
Katie from Ipswich. Here about a fond Sizzler memory.
Speaker 5 (06:55):
I love guy which this guy I was like, oh
you know when you think you know somebody, Yeah wrong.
Eventually I think his wife clocked it and she approached
me and started going off. She was like, why are
you staring at my husband? Are you sleeping with him?
I know he's having an affair.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
And then it.
Speaker 5 (07:15):
Hit me like a cradle wave. I used to work
at that time as a receptionist in a gentleman's club,
a brothel, and he was a very regular.
Speaker 6 (07:27):
Customer and comedian Melbuttle used to get up to no
good as well.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
I would go into the toilets, lock the doors and
then slide underneath the stalls and leave the doors locked.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Why I don't know. I don't know. If we knew Robin.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
I'd probably be a lawyer by now.
Speaker 6 (07:45):
It was love at first bite. So every day this
week a lucky location across the city was grazed by
the cheese toast Gods.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
We are doing the cheese Toast Tour of Brisbane, different
locations all this week.
Speaker 6 (07:57):
Brono's Ledge Coreotes didn't want miss out either.
Speaker 7 (08:04):
Good morning, Yes, we're down at Brendale Bunnies and it
is pumping.
Speaker 4 (08:08):
The trade's lighting up, like who is waiting in line?
Speaker 7 (08:12):
There's been people lining up from I think twenty seven.
That was saying, so everyone's been waiting for him, don't worry,
and we've got people driving from everywhere is to come
here and obviously meet me.
Speaker 6 (08:21):
But right, that got me thinking cheese toast or coreotes
or what about cheese toast on coreotes? Cass, come on, Cass,
give me that cheese. Then we met Chaz, who was
a cheesy toast vergin.
Speaker 5 (08:39):
Hi, I'm Sharon, Sharon.
Speaker 6 (08:41):
You have never ever had cheesy toast before?
Speaker 5 (08:44):
Never?
Speaker 6 (08:44):
Okay, take a bite, go.
Speaker 5 (08:45):
On, let's see how it is. Chaz, talk with your mouth.
Speaker 6 (08:50):
She's thanking the baby. Wait so long?
Speaker 4 (08:53):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
You can't understand logic to waiting this long for cheesy toast.
Speaker 6 (08:58):
Here at kiss ninety three, we've had the week that
felt like a year.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
How many pieces of cheese toast has Brisbane devoured in
the last week?
Speaker 2 (09:07):
So we've gone through four thousand and one and joining
fifty slices of bread eight butter eighty eight? And what
about doing it all day every day? Really that's like
basically half after we do forty.
Speaker 6 (09:22):
But so much better.
Speaker 5 (09:25):
And did something happen?
Speaker 3 (09:26):
Something crazy happen?
Speaker 2 (09:27):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Yeah, we've been through three kitchen and motors,
joining the butter.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
And you've broken kitchen.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
Oh my god, yes we did.
Speaker 6 (09:36):
But had our Sizzler Cheese toast dreams really come to
an end close?
Speaker 4 (09:41):
Could we like think about doing more Sizzler stuff like
a one off pop up Sizzler extravaganza. Could you imagine,
Brisbane if we had for one night.
Speaker 5 (09:52):
Only Sizzler is.
Speaker 6 (09:57):
So our Robin did what she does best, she manifested.
Speaker 4 (10:01):
Could we like think about doing more Sizzla stuff like
a one off pop up Sizzler extravaganza?
Speaker 5 (10:09):
Up?
Speaker 6 (10:09):
Oh my goodness, Brisbane, you prayed to the baby cheeses
and we did it.
Speaker 4 (10:16):
Big news, We're bringing CISLa back And
