Dolly Parton may not be coming to Canberra herself, but the next best thing is! Tricia Paoluccio, who stars as Dolly in the upcoming musical Here You Come Again, is bringing the country icon’s charm to the capital this November.

She stopped by to chat with Rod and Gabi, sharing all about the show, and even spilled some behind-the-scenes tea on a famous Taylor Swift dress.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
What was the song that Dolly Parton's done with the Wiggles.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
I think it's called Friends. Is that the one that
she's just done.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
They just did a.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Country album, the Wiggles, and they collaborated with a fair
few artists, but Dolly Parton was one of them, and
they just did their American tour, so they actually caught
up with her while they were there, and it was
a very exciting moment.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
There are very few artists it is called friends, friends,
no doubt, friends, so iconic, so unique her voice, and
there are very few artists left in the world that
transcend generations, that can collaborate with Miley, that can collaborate

(00:41):
with the Wiggles, and that were there when modern pop
and rock were actually becoming a thing. And so, I mean,
she's been the star Films nine to five. Could there
be anything more iconic working? Let Me Live? Getting by

(01:04):
the great Dolly Partners. So we're very excited to see
this production coming to the Canberra Theater on November twenty seven.
Tricia Pelucia fantastic accomplished actress. She comes from the US,
from California and she's done it all and we're very
lucky that She's actually doing a pre promo tour and

(01:24):
has popped in. Thank you so much for popping interest.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Oh, I'm so happy to be here. O.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
God, you sound like Dolly.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
This is the amazing thing as an American you have
annex And how much did you need to adjust it
to adapt Dolly's.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
I do have to adjust it my regular voices like this,
so it's really nothing like Dolly. Dolly's voice, but her
singing voice is something that I've been doing my whole
life since I was a little girl.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
That's incredible.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
And then when I was doing this show, I knew
how to speak like her too, So I just watched
her so much that I just now I can just
channel it and kind of go in and out of
it wild.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
It is so wild and Geatabie Tricia looks like Dolly.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
Well, you know, my favorite era of Dolly is that
nineteen seventies eighties when she was very pup. Yes, so
we have so much fun with that, and so I'm yes,
I thought, you know, it's more fun to have me
come as this. Wouldn't you prefer this very much? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (02:17):
Gee, tell us about the show that you're doing. A
camera theater around.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
You guys, you guys. I'm so proud of our show.
You know how hard it is to write a musical.
It's really hard. And we had this idea for a
long long time, and we got a grant in twenty
twenty to write a musical my husband and I. He's
a Broadway director, and Gabe said, let's do that show
that's been on your heart all these years. I always
had a vision that there was a show in seeing
Dolly Parton help and uber fan. So you'd have an

(02:47):
excuse to have all of her greatest hips at hits,
but it would be like getting to see her in action.
I mean, imagine when in full glam in a junkie attic.
You know, I wanted the dichotomy of that, So we
wrote the show in twenty twenty about Dolly helping an
uber fan while he was in isolation and time in Nita.
He's a comedian, so it's funny, but you know he

(03:10):
needs her help. And so basically she comes to life
through a poster and she's like, listen, I've been keeping
my eye on everyone, and I could feel your need
for some help. What's going on? You know I'm here
for you basically, and it's a really great premise, an
excuse to see Dolly seeing all these great songs.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
And that's the thing, you know, because I don't think
you know Dolly's days of visiting Australia. We're not going
to say that again. And so to have you coming
out here is a privilege for any of us who've
grown up loving Dolly another generation. We just played a
little bit of the Wiggles meeting Dolly for the first time.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Yes, that was a wonderful clip. I saw that. That
was so special.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
It's and I wonder whether does Dolly know?

Speaker 3 (03:53):
Oh true, Oh yes, of course. I mean, we had
to get legal permissions, so our lawyers knew her lawyers
and got them at her and I made a recording
and I made a video and it was my husband
makes fun of me because I was speaking to Dolly
in this video and he goes, stop crying. Is that RESI?
I would be like, Dolly, I've my name is Tricia,
I grew up on a farm and I love you
my whole life.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
And he's like, stop crying.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
You know, He's like, you seem like a crazy uber fan,
you know, stalker, and I'm like, I don't mean to be,
but I'm so emotional about Dolly and so you know,
now listen, and I don't mean, I really don't mean
to brag it all. I truly feel like I'm kind
of a witness to this whole thing, and I feel
grateful every day that I've been blessed with this honor
of getting to play her. But the feedback that we

(04:35):
get really is that people do feel like they get
to be with the real Dolly for two hours. It's
not a tribute act. I'm not an impersonator, but I
feel like what I know, don't know why or how,
but I think it is just from decades of loving
her and ingesting her music that I just my goal
is to really channel her so you feel like you've
been kind of blessed with her spirit.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
My daughter is a non and twelve, and oh, they're
gonna love it. Well. My nine year old said to me,
have you seen the video of Dolly around? And I said,
what happened? She said, well, Taylor Swift spoke about it,
so I found it and it's actually Dolly performing. And
how to manage not Heckler's but just rowdy crowd members

(05:18):
when you're singing a ballad right, and so Dolly starts
singing I don't know what the song was, starts singing
a ballad and someone shouts out, in this really touching,
quiet moment of the song, how much he loves her,
and Dolly stops and shouts back at him. I said,
stay in the truck. And my nine year old daughter
thought that was hilarious. And so when we talk about

(05:39):
it as you're coming in, I was talking about very
few artists left in the world. We may not be
lucky enough to see again an artist the likes of
Dolly who transcends every generation. My nine year old daughter,
and it wouldn't matter we were one hundred years old
grand mothers. That's kod absolutely.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
She her fan base is huge, and I love seeing
kids in the audience. I always tell their mothers like,
I'm so that you taught your children about Dolly Parton,
you know, and what a great role model for girls,
and this story it really it's it's very hope giving
and uh, you know, and and I think we'll teach

(06:13):
everybody a great lesson about life and perseverance and grit
and resilience. And it's a message we all we always
need to hear and she's a wonderful messenger. So you know,
I'd love your daughters to come.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
Well, I would love to come.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
And before we go, just really quickly, you're also a
beautiful content creator and visual artists when it comes to
pressing flowers.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Oh, I love that you know that well about Tyler Swift.
Stress if your daughter do you know about?

Speaker 1 (06:41):
Does he know know?

Speaker 3 (06:42):
Okay, do any of these listeners here remember when pressed
when Taylor Swift won the Grammys and she wore that
pressed flower dress that kind of went viral.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
Yes, I made that, you made the dress. Yes, listen.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
I grew up loving pressing flowers and Dolly Parton and
nobody cared my entire life.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
Nobody cared.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
Okay, I want. I would beg my friends, do you
want to come over? I'm going to teach you how
to press flowers? And they'd be like, I'm busy doing laundry.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
Nobody cares.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
And then right before the pandemic, all of a sudden,
I shared one work of art on my Instagram and
it went viral and Oscar Lorenta reached out to me
to do a big collaboration. Then the pandemic hit and
I quarantined in a little cabin in the foothills, and
the thought came to me. I was so depressed. I'm like,
I can't believe. Finally people care about my art. And
then the pandemic hits, and the thought came, no, nothing

(07:37):
good can be lost. Pick and press all the flowers
you can and make the art as if it will happen.
And that is what I did, which that messaging is
really in our show. It's part of our whatever show
is about. You just figure out what you love to
do that you could do well, and then you know trust,
Let go and trust and then the right thing will happen. Well,
that's what happened to me. And blow and behold. Oscar

(07:58):
Lorenta made the most sucessful collection of gowns and dresses
of their entire history with my artwork, including the Taylor
Swift dress. So you show your daughter and say, the
girl that plays Dolly helped make that dress. That's my artwork.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
She will love that. My goodness, you're doing that voice
chills on that. You do an amazing job. We exit
thank you for bringing the show.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
I'm excited. I cannot wait to come back.

Speaker 1 (08:22):
Well, this is going to be an Australian too, but
we love it when we don't have to get in
the car and drop aut to Sydney. So this is
the Candra Theater, Santa And November twenty seven. I met
you earlier this morning and I just walked up to
you and said good ay. You said not enough Australians
are saying gooday to you.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
Oh you know, I feel like you're the first one
to say good day and that I want to throw
that in. You know, I do a lot of improv
in my show, and I talked to people and you know,
and I just it's fun.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
It's more good eye.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
I'm going to try to throw in a little good day.
How's that good day?

Speaker 1 (08:49):
Maybe I'll do that.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
And I hear you come again moment good day? How
is that I first start up, I'd be like, well,
it's great to be here in Melbourne. Wait, Melbourne, Melbourne, Melbourne.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
Lazy with Ellen.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
It's hard, it's really fun. You are the first Australian
to say good day.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
Oh come on, Australia, Let's get it together.

Speaker 3 (09:08):
Man, give me the treatment.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
When you see Tricia and or in whichever persona give
her a good day, congratulations. Thank you so much so much.

Speaker 3 (09:17):
For having me.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
We'll see you in no m Yes, please do
