Speaker 1 (00:00):
They came bounding over.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
What's a procedure.

Speaker 3 (00:09):
This is Roden Gabby versus the world.

Speaker 4 (00:15):
If you tip something often enough, at a certain point,
you will be right. And the biggest news story, not
just in Australia but around the world has broken Ashley Yep,
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelcey are engaged. There it is.

(00:37):
I mean, people kept saying week after week, month after month,
year after year, I reckon, it's happening this week, and
now someone said it and they're right.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Yeah, I'm pretty sure. I said this was a publicity
stunt that they were dating. So I was wrong. Yeah,
I said that would break up for sure, and that
you know, fake contractor came out that they were dating
for a minimum a year. I thought that was legit. Anyway,
I was wrong all accounts.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Well, this could be an extension of that, couldn't it.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
I've really got next level on the pr in love.
You know, it's like one of those rom callers where
they do it as a dare and then they actually
fall in love and it becomes a thing. Maybe maybe
like she's all that or everyone.

Speaker 4 (01:16):
Loves the contract extension. Yeah, Tay's gone to her man
and Listen, you've been better than expected expectations.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
You've hit your KPIs.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
Let's continue.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
We've put another year on your deal.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
Yes, have you seen the ring?

Speaker 5 (01:29):
No?

Speaker 6 (01:29):
Hi ring?

Speaker 3 (01:30):
I am so appreciative that they put the ring out
there front and center on the post like here it is. Guys,
take a look. But what do you think about it?
It's very her But what do you think about it? Well,
it's big. I like that, it's not. No, I think
it's pretty. I like it. I do like it.

Speaker 4 (01:49):
Took me a while to see it yet, Rod Gabbie,
he's handing me the phone with the ring zoomed in. Well, look,
big is the word, and so.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Look, hey, who cares?

Speaker 3 (02:01):
That's all you've got?

Speaker 2 (02:01):
Right, who cares what?

Speaker 3 (02:02):
That's all you've got?

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Cares?

Speaker 4 (02:03):
What?

Speaker 2 (02:03):
I think? I care what you Okay? Ben, I'm glad
you asked.

Speaker 4 (02:07):
I think borders on impractical, doesn't it.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
It's not as impractical as Christiano Ronaldo's fiance's ring.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
That's not just similar.

Speaker 4 (02:16):
It's like a footy like one of our footing.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
It's huge, but it's also like it's it's flush, so
it's not going to catch on things. I'm like the
other one like, it's set in a gold band, so
the diamond's not going to catch, so that's good. I
just think it's really ugly.

Speaker 5 (02:33):
You don't like it.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
I really dislike it at the time because it's not
my ring. But when Chelsea showed me this morning, my
first thought was, I.

Speaker 4 (02:41):
And look, you know, there's two sorts of people in
the world that are happy for her.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
It's best. I don't finish.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
Versus the world.

Speaker 4 (02:51):
For over three decades after the phenomenon of the boy band,
they are still the focus of global fascination.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
Being in a bund which was an unrealistic dream.

Speaker 5 (03:05):
It was just a rall of screams and hormones.

Speaker 7 (03:09):
It went off.

Speaker 6 (03:11):
It's the most amazing highs, amazing lows. You were one
hundred percent trover. You don't want that.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
Be an a council.

Speaker 4 (03:20):
You can't have it both ways. That's the BBC DOCU
series boy Bands Forever, and the last voice you hear
is Simon Cawe, the man responsible for putting our next
guests together. They have sold over twenty million records, remember records,
twelve twenty million records worldwide, and in the late nineties

(03:44):
dominated Australian charts. As well as their homeland the UK
with about a zillion number ones.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Welcome Sean, Richie.

Speaker 4 (03:52):
Scott, Jay and ads, the icons five gooday boys.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
All right, here we go.

Speaker 7 (03:57):
Hello, Thank you very much, said name first again? Very
very powerful.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
Was that ever a fight to get your name first
on the listing?

Speaker 7 (04:16):
It's fabulous, feels amazing, you know, yeah, that's only I
came back to be honest with the cinnacle of his life.
Had a feeling it could happen.

Speaker 4 (04:29):
How amazing. You know, we're talking about decads later. This
is outrageous. I mean, we were all younger, but you
know what we didn't have when we were teenagers perspective.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
What does it feel like doing this now?

Speaker 6 (04:39):
Well, yeah, yeah it is good. Way, it's good because
like we're in the moment and we're really appreciating that
moment rather than sort of not fully being there like
in your mind. So yeah, it's it's it's a beautiful
moment for all of us. And to see the enthusiasm
like you know, when we announced places, when we announced here,

(05:01):
just announced obviously the Australian New Zealand tour, to see
the reaction to still be bringing that joy to people
and moving people with the music we did.

Speaker 7 (05:11):
After twenty five years, you don't even know if the
fans really even exist. And that's the truth. So you know,
when we're relieved that it do exist, Oh we do?

Speaker 3 (05:21):
We don't we exist? Richie, you spent some years here
in Australia living in Sydney opening a restaurant, so you
said in the text that announced the Australian to Are
that you were going to show the guys around. Have
the rest of you spent much time in Australia like
it would have been a whirlwind back in the day,
But since then, like with most.

Speaker 7 (05:41):
Places, unfortunately I've got barely any memory of it because
it was, as you just said, it was a total whirlwind.

Speaker 6 (05:49):
Hang on, yeah, you do, because the hotel let us
go to the pool after show, and us and the
dances of some of the musicians in the pool in Melbourne.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
Yeah, I remember, what a memory.

Speaker 7 (06:06):
And I've literally just been like two months ago because
I went to the I always had a dream when
I was younger to go to the State of Origin.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Ah.

Speaker 7 (06:17):
Yes, I went to the State of Origin and I
went to a few NRL games in Sydney and just
that absolutely amazing time, and I was I was buzzing
because when I was in the stadium, I kept they
kept playing all the five songs and rock songs in
Australia five. And Rich has always said it because he
lived rich talking nonsense because he can do.

Speaker 5 (06:40):
Well.

Speaker 7 (06:40):
It actually turns out, did.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
I know you were there?

Speaker 4 (06:45):
It was a coincidence that were that were Robinson five
just while you happen to be in the stadium.

Speaker 7 (06:51):
I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I
don't know. It's just like just all the in part
of the build up, they're just like playing those of
five tunes and yeah, I was just like, this is
great calling it.

Speaker 4 (07:00):
Yeah, you know what before before we let you go,
you mean different things to different people. I used to
listen to you when I was going out, Gabby you.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
I was only twelve when you guys hit Peek and
I have to blame you guys for my bad boy
obsession because you were like the edgier version of the
boy band and I was really into it. But I
remember singing along to all your songs and it's not
until way way way down the track that I realized
what the songs were about. And I'm sure. I'm sure
you have a lot of fans like that.

Speaker 5 (07:28):
Right.

Speaker 8 (07:30):
Yeah, it's about basketball what you're talking about.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
It is because it is getting down, getting up. It's
all about the basketball.

Speaker 7 (07:38):
County by all, very innocent.

Speaker 4 (07:42):
It was Gabby's mind back then, and she was becoming
a teenager.

Speaker 7 (07:47):
To intercept.

Speaker 4 (07:49):
Highlights in the crevices in the dark corners of Gabby's mind.

Speaker 8 (07:55):
Yeah, there's a there's a there's a low key secret
among the five camp that nobody knows. And I give
you the exclusive.

Speaker 7 (08:01):
Do you want it?

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (08:03):
I don't know. If we do, we want to.

Speaker 8 (08:05):
So if you if you add up order numbers in
all of the album the five albums, there's a secret
message You've told them.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
Man, we are. We're off to get a calculator. We're
going to do some math.

Speaker 6 (08:20):
Is You're going to turn the calculator upside down. It's
going to say booby.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
I hope it does. I'm going to be disappointed if
it doesn't.

Speaker 4 (08:29):
That if if now we realize the timing of the
entire career was so that it added up to boobies.
When you turn the calculator upside down, it all makes sense,
and it was all it was all play the twenty
five years to come back.

Speaker 7 (08:42):
To deliver this.

Speaker 4 (08:46):
Time, Capsules five are back for the first time in
twenty five years, one of the UK's most successful bands,
reuniting all five members. Humbled on to have you on
the show here today, boys, keep on moving twenty twenty six.
It'll kick up in Perth before heading to Sydney, Brisbane,
Melbourne and Auckland. Teg Dainty dot com Get your tickets

(09:07):
if there are any left. Congratulations on one of the
most impactful careers in music history and what and honor
to have you here with one of the great duovers.
Very few people don't get to do it. You guys,
world to are selling out stadium. Congratulations, Thank you, thank you,
thank you, thank you, Thanks so much, great chat lads,

(09:27):
good on you, Thank you Curio. Everyone's going hard to
try and get ahold of the merchandise. I mean we
have merch but you get to the final home game
of this season.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
This is a big one. Playing for the minor premiership.

Speaker 4 (09:45):
We know we're going to have a home final, so
a lot of us feel like we need to add
something to the merch to the recollection. Yes, and I
still the search continues. I'm just kicking myself that I
never got one.

Speaker 2 (09:59):
Of the incredible you just cool. You can't get there's
two different ones.

Speaker 3 (10:03):
Yeah, they had all the different Marvel ones for all
the different teams.

Speaker 4 (10:06):
The whole was awesome, the greatest. If you go one
of those, you are very lucky. You can't can't get
them anywhere? Have you kidded Olivia out?

Speaker 3 (10:14):
Well, I went into Riverside Plaza on the weekend after
swimming and my mom and I were just going in
for a coffee and mom andy just get a few
things from coals. So we were walking in and there
was a stall that was in the middle of the
shops and they just had a bunch of knitted goods
and there was a couple of Raiders colored beanies that
had been hand knitted. So I walked on over and

(10:35):
I'm like, well, I got to get one of these.
And it was a couple of ladies who were sitting
there and they were obviously the crafters of these goods.
There was a whole bunch of things and there was
only a couple of Raiders themed things. But I looked
at Olivia and I'm like, do you want this? And
she loves a hat, So of course she was gonna
say yes. I didn't need to ask her.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
Where's she at with the did she ever have a one?

Speaker 5 (10:55):
Ye?

Speaker 4 (10:55):
Mean, she's not even two, So anything you get her
she would just fly through.

Speaker 7 (10:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (10:59):
No, she's never had any Raiders merch before, to be honest,
because when she was little, little I just couldn't be bothered,
like she was just in her one years all day,
every day. And now she's in this in between stage
where I cannot get anything for her because the baby
stuff's too small and the kids stuff starts at like

(11:20):
four or five.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
She'll be she'll like grow that in two minutes. Just
get the big stuff.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
It'll be a dress on her. Well, it's not about things,
all right, maybe I'll get that anyway. So I found
the beanie and I was like, all right, you have
no merch. We need to get you some merch for
the Grand Final because we're having a Grand Final party
at our house in honor of my nana, because my
nana would watch every single Raiders game and to get
to the Grand Final and she's not here, like that's
pretty touching. So we're all gonna be yelling at the

(11:45):
tv in her honor. But when we get to the
grand final, of course, so I had to get the beanie.
So anyway, I'm standing there getting this beanie and it's
taking a minute because technology wasn't on our side and
it was trying to authorize. It's one of those square
payments and it was the Senior Sits of Queen ban
that was holding this stall. So they were raising money
for Senior Sits and they got all their craft there

(12:05):
and my mom was chatting to the lady. I'm getting
the beanie and they were chatting away and I didn't
think anything of it, and then we bought the beanie.
It all went through, and then I was like, oh,
look at this, this is cool too, and my mom
just under her breath goes come almost go, and I
was like, oh, all right, Mum really wants that coffee.
So I'm like, let's go. Got the beanie on Olivia
and off we go to get a coffee. And my

(12:26):
mum turns to me and goes, they were trying to
recruit me.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
That's such a bad thing. She's very active community.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
Yeah, well but she doesn't live in Queen Yeah. And
there's there was bung indoor Senior sits up until.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
Recent travel travel but there is.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
No bung Indoor Senior Sits anymore. But anyway, my mom
was like, well, they're trying to recruit me to be
part of the Queen Senior Sits. And I'm like, did
you say that you were offended that they assumed you
were a senior And Mom just starts laughing because she's like,
it's pretty often. Yes, I'm here with my grand daughter.
But anyway, so we had to move on quickly before

(13:05):
they signed her up for Pilates and Zoomba Rodin Gabby
Versus the.

Speaker 4 (13:10):
World fantastic comedian back in the nation's capital tomorrow night
with his new World tour, Good intentions. It's going to
be great to catch up with Luke Kidgel performing at
the Llewellyn Hall. He is one of the best Australian
comedians going around. This is him in the UK and

(13:30):
this is ambitious because he's talking about how hoity toy
they are. But I assume he found a part of
the UK that's a bit more working class.

Speaker 5 (13:40):
Now, if you never meant to Oxford before, it's very posh,
it's very pristine, it's very fancy that I discriminate unless
you're poor.

Speaker 7 (13:48):
Unfortunately for me, I was doing.

Speaker 5 (13:50):
My show in quite a small comedy club, right, so
much smaller than the one we're in tonight, and I
make some silly self deprecating comment that I wasn't making
that much money.

Speaker 8 (14:00):
On the show because that was true, and.

Speaker 6 (14:03):
Thinking that would have a life at my expense.

Speaker 5 (14:05):
They're so posh.

Speaker 3 (14:06):
A girl at the back just goes, oh, yes, this
is like.

Speaker 5 (14:09):
A charity gig, but you're the charity.

Speaker 4 (14:14):
I'll be honest, pretty good Happle Loue Kidgel. It's courageous
to go to a country and start having a cram
like that.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
That they loved it.

Speaker 5 (14:24):
I did do that bit in Oxford on my reason too.
I wanted to know I don't want to be doing
it behind that back as well.

Speaker 3 (14:33):
That's very brave of you and noble to be able
to say it to their face, of course.

Speaker 5 (14:39):
I mean, I mean they didn't love it, you know, no,
not a shot.

Speaker 1 (14:47):
They're not. They're not great at taking feedback.

Speaker 4 (14:49):
But we've got a young fellow who works with us,
who was on the bill with you last time.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
He played the UC here and he said.

Speaker 4 (14:58):
We just didn't know it was an outdoor Giar when
it was booked and we turned up there and Luke
had landed the twilight spot, so it meant the sun
was blasting him.

Speaker 2 (15:06):
In the face while he was trying to do his set.

Speaker 4 (15:10):
I hope that didn't lead to too much Canber gear
that you're doing behind our backs elsewhere.

Speaker 1 (15:15):
No, there's no Canberra, I see that. I used to
be a bit about Canberra one time.

Speaker 5 (15:19):
I got the same Uber driver three times in one
day well, which is arguably the most Canber experience of
all times. So I used to have a camera bit,
but I no longer do that routine.

Speaker 4 (15:31):
Well, we are the Bush capital. I'd like you to
know we do have more than one Uber driver.

Speaker 1 (15:36):
I'm still.

Speaker 2 (15:39):
You have no evidence to the country day, so that's
fair enough.

Speaker 3 (15:42):
You did a bit about Robert Irwin's First Trap that
was posted not long ago. I couldn't tell if you
loved it or hated it, being in America at the
time when this actually was put up on billboards over there.
Did you love the first Trap?

Speaker 5 (15:58):
Oh? I loved it. Well, I loved that over there,
like they still bring up the ygun breakdancing thing every day,
like they detect Australia they like bringing up to your face.

Speaker 1 (16:09):
And then the Robert Earwin thing when that came out
when I was in New York. That changed the conversation.

Speaker 5 (16:15):
Robert Earl and saved us Australians overseas from ridicule because
then it just became back to all you guys are
cool and you have animals again.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
Gee, good saying.

Speaker 5 (16:25):
I mean he was a great pivot for us culturally.

Speaker 4 (16:28):
Paul Hogan did so much lifting for a couple of
decades for Raygun to undermine the whole thing. Luckily Robert
turned back up when he did.

Speaker 1 (16:35):
Yeah. Literally, so thank you Robert. No, I'm a big
fan of Robert, big fan of his bod shout out.

Speaker 4 (16:45):
How do you manage anxiety? Serious question, but it's for
a lot of us. Getting up and doing public speaking
is just overwhelming. When you look at that world to
a list of destinations, do you enter it with optimism
or do you hold your breath and then X at
the end of the whole thing?

Speaker 3 (17:02):
A bit of both.

Speaker 1 (17:04):
I think it's fine because even if it goes.

Speaker 5 (17:06):
Bad, like ah, I live like an eight and hour
flight away from here, so I could just leave.

Speaker 4 (17:13):
That's a great way to do, right, point exactly that said, though,
do I, I mean, you must do Melbourne gigs. Do
they feel like there's a bit more pressure because there's
the home ground.

Speaker 1 (17:23):
Of course, because all my friends are there. Oh no, right,
that one's always the weirdest.

Speaker 5 (17:27):
One because I get like my old high school teachers
come and my parents come and you know, family, and
that's weird.

Speaker 1 (17:33):
I'd rather just.

Speaker 5 (17:34):
Like, you know, if I'm going to have a bad gig,
you know, let it happen in Calgary.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
Do you change your material depending your family and teachers
are going to be there?

Speaker 1 (17:45):
No?

Speaker 5 (17:45):
I think at this point I've just had to accept
that I will just have to apologize to certain people after.

Speaker 2 (17:51):
The Yeah, that's the truth. That's smart.

Speaker 4 (17:54):
This show sold out, by the way, So we appreciate
you coming on good intentions.

Speaker 2 (17:57):
Llewell and Hall in Canberra.

Speaker 4 (17:59):
We appreciate you coming back to the Capitol after the
sunset incident. Luke Kidgel one of the great Ossie stand
up comedians touring the world, and we'll see you again
here in Cambride tomorrow night.

Speaker 1 (18:10):
Matt, thank you appreciate you having me on

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
