Speaker 1 (00:01):
Let's get more on that breaking story overseas now. Hurricane
Melissa has made landfall is a category five storm in Jamaica.
Joining us live is digital creative Veronica Wyndham, who is
in Kingston, Jamaica. Good morning to you. Just take us
through what you're feeling, what you're hearing, what you're seeing.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Right now, I was you can see you, and my
hair is blowing and I'm inside. We've been with our
electricity for like fifteen hours, so I'm happy that i
could see you guys before my phone dies. It's very windy,
can see things blowing in the air, and it's really scary.
(00:40):
It's a scary time to be here.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
Do you know Kingston, Well, we know that there's you know,
various styles of accommodation there, of course big resorts, but
also too there are smaller towns and little areas that
could be really hard hit by this.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Yeah, definitely. You know, you have some more poor areas
and some more rich area and the higher you are,
the safety you are going to be. Right now, I'm
pretty high up, but I'm still sitting in a lot
of work because the water.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Is just coming through the windows even though they're locked,
because quality is not the same as it would be other.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Than more old.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
Unfortunately, up to nine hundred thousand locals had been told
to try and get out, to try and get out
of the path of this storm. Is that possible in Kingston?
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Right? You know? There is no airplanes going, Everything is
shut down, no anything, So I guess we have to
just sit at home and hope for the berths and
pray that it's going to get over as soon as possible.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
The other issue with this storm is that it seems
to be slow moving, so there's obviously tidal rises, title
surges that they're worried about, and rainfall particular, and that
flash flooding which could last for quite some time.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Yeah, that's what we've heard as well. As you can
see in my hair keeps blowing in my face, and
the wind is just so strong and I'm in a
concrete home. You wouldn't think so, So it's extremely loud.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
Veronica. We were obviously fingers crossed hoping to get a
connection with you. It's amazing the fact that we have
able to do that with three hundred plus kilometer winds
in and around where you are. Stay safe. We'll try
and touch base with you soon,
