Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Super Serious Sports Show with Chris Carmen and Adam Jansen.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Okay, aj, It's one of those weird things that we're
doing for the podcast this week that it's sort of
in another nether zone of time and space. Because we're
doing it on Tuesday, some people are going to hear
it before the Matilda's and some people, unfortunately, are gonna
get stuck to us talking about sport while there's the
biggest football game in this country ever on the radio.
(00:25):
So it's a kind of weird thing and a weird time.
But what's caught your eye?
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Before we get to What's caught my eye? If you
are listening to this on the radio, you are missing
the Matilda's.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Yes, I'm just going to put that out there.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
This is this is a warning for you to find
a TV or to find I want to send people
another station, but find the Matilda's. Go down to greener place,
do something, do something, don't don't sit and listen to
the radio anyway. What's caught my eye the Matilda's and
the retirements, not Matilda's retirements, they're separate.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
We've got a few of those, and and a bit
more of other stuff and bits and pieces to come
on this edition of the Super Serious Book Show. Well,
as so we want to do occasionally we do put
the roundball game at the head of this program, which
you stupid not to although as mentioned briefly in the intro,
it's sort of we're lost in time and space here
full disclosure, we're recording this on Tuesday afternoon.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Okay, so we don't.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Know should the Matildas win their semi final, we have
no idea who their opponent's going to be in the final,
because that game is still to be played.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
As well, let's not be the US team. Let's not
get ahead of ourselves. Let's worry about the game in
front of us. Why do what do English fans get
so upset about it being called soccer?
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Do you know because they invented the game? Well, they
say they invented the game. There's a school of thought
that was invented in China. But anyway, they invented the
game and they call it football, and so they don't
have other codes of football that claim to be called football.
Whereas in America you have American football, in Australia you
have Australian rules football, you have Canadian football, rugby League
(01:57):
calls itself football in some parts of the world. Rugby
Union calls itself football in other parts of the world.
But in England they call it football, but it's called soccer,
which is a shortening of association football.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
Oh, there you go. I didn't know that. It's stupid,
but there you go. You know what else? I didn't
know that.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
Of the four remaining teams, so Australia, England, Spain, Sweden, Yes,
none of them have won a World Cup. No, so
we're going to have a first time. I thought England
had won before nod.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
England is a sad, desperate wasteland when it comes to
sporting success. They won the European Women's Championship, was the
last year of the year before they won that. I
don't think their men's team has ever won a European Championship,
and they won a World Cup in nineteen sixty six.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Were you there?
Speaker 2 (02:44):
No, of course I wasn't there. Then okay, I'll let
you get that one in. They also have this thing,
and I'm sure we've touched on it before, about football's
coming home. There is a tradition in the English music
industry that when an English football team is on the
verge of something big, and it used to happen quite
often that a club would make it to the FA
(03:04):
Cup final. They'd get the team in despite their lack
of musical ability, to get them into a studio and
they'd sing a song at some stage. I'll share some
of them with you, because Spurs did one in nineteen
eighty one and I think another one in nineteen eighty two.
I know Manchester United have done it. I'm sure Liverpool
have done it. But the England football team has had anthems.
I don't remember whether there were players involved or one
(03:26):
of them. When it was the Euros were being played
in England in nineteen ninety something, there was a song
called Football's Coming Home, and ever since then, even though
England didn't win, they've used it. There's anytime one of
their teams has started doing well as a bit of
a rallying cry to great indifference from the rest of
the world.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
There you go.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Do you know I went to school with a former
Matilda's Playoff did you so? Not just like year eleven
and twelve, because I went to school at Leichend and
Derrick College and the AIS and their students there, but
actually through primary school and high school. So I went
to Gurolline Primary and Kayleen Humh and a girl named
Peter Claire Hepplin was in my year, so I went
through pretty much all of school with her. She's awesome.
(04:09):
So what we're saying that, Oh, she was amazing and
you knew she was going to play for Australia, so
she played for Australia at the two thousand Olympics.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
So what you're saying is that we could have actually
managed if you'd been smart enough to get some credit
for our soccer chats by getting someone who you went
to school with for twelve years who played for Australia
on this program to actually talk a little bit of
football from someone who knows football, we could have done that.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
I have absolutely no contact details for her whatsoever.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
That's poor.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Yeah, it was a long time ago. I have forty
two now, so she'd be forty two now as well.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
I've still got contacts from people owing to school where
they've done big things, like Dave Ferner.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
If anyone from the Heppelen family, because I'm a big
soccer family in Canberra, if anyone is listening or anyone
knows them, if they want to reach out to the
radio station.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
We'd actually love to get Peter Claire on the radio.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
Yeah, and we'll get a horror for the twenty twenty
seven Women's World Cup, which Australian might be.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
A champions. Okay, I think it's really interesting that she
played for the matilities.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
I think it's great, but it would have been handy
if you'd mentioned that, I don't know, four weeks ago.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Yeah, my bad.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Anyway, that penalty shootout on Saturday night, I know everyone's
talked about it and it has been done to death.
That was just a thing of beauty, a thing of magnificence,
and had a great thing thing to watch.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
It was.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
That is possibly the most tense I've ever been watching
a sporting contest. So for nearly three hours, Australia went
through periods of the game where they looked more likely
to score than their periods of the game where France
looked more likely to score. Mary Fowler looks likely to
score it just about any moment and then just just
couldn't get the ball into the goal. But that penalty shootout,
(05:52):
that was exciting.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
It was great. It was great.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Now you had an issue with the order that the
Australian and kenzy Arnold went too early. When you're the goalkeeper,
you it's almost like she wasn't allowed to concentrate on
one thing at a time. I think she should have
been later in the order. I think she went fourth
or fifth. She had one of the shots that was
to win the game and she hit the post, so
(06:16):
the goal wasn't safe.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
She hit the post. That was the only thing where
I went. And even before she came to the.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Shot, I was like, oh, Mackenziannold, like we've got like
let her focus on just stopping the goals.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
Don't know. That was just my thoughts, But I'm not
the Australian coach, so what do I know?
Speaker 2 (06:30):
Yeah, And they have to name the My understanding is
you name your players of the eleven who are left
on the pitch or if you ever had a player
sent off the ten obviously, but you have the eleven
who are on the pitch and you have to name
the order that they will take the shots in and
once they're in, that's it.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
That's it.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
I believe that's how it works.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
One last question for you, because otherwise we're going to
run way out of time. Does Sam kurse start.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
I think she starts to play the whole game. I
think she starts penal this year. As if it goes
to that, then tough pickies. But you've got to give
sam Ka as much opportunity as you can to exert
influence because you saw the way that the Matilda's lifted
that in that game when she came on, there was
a real uplift for fifteen twenty minutes in tempo from
that side, and I were desperately unlucky not to go
(07:18):
in front at some stage.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Well, hopefully by the time people hear this on the radio,
they're uptree.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
Now fingers crossed.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
There's going to retirement talk a plenty on this episode
of the Super Serious Bords Show. Not me, not aj
so people who don't like us too bad. But Jared Croker,
one of the greatest players for the Raiders ever Camber
Raiders in the NRL ever, has announced that this is
indeed his last season. He's played three hundred and five games.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
Jared only played his three hundredth game. What a couple
of months ago. Now we spoke to the time, we
spoke to him at length. So Jared Cracker an amazing
career for the Raiders. Would love to see him finish
with the premiership. I don't think that's going to happen.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
Off the back of week. They'll be lucky if they.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Make the finals.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
Yeah, well they're in trouble. They're in trouble. The thing
is too, the team that they're playing this Sunday afternoon,
the Bulldogs. They were awful last week as well. They've
been copping it in the media. So there's going to
be two very highly motivated teams out there at Goo
Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
But jeez, you are optimistic. You're putting the positive slant
on it. There too highly motivated teams. It could be
that there's gonna be two awful teams out there this.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
No, I think they'll be two very motivated teams.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
Is this the time that the Raiders take a good
hard look at the roster and say, right, we've got
the chance to do a rebuild here. Much as I
love him, is it time to give Jordan Rappnert the
tap on the shoulder and say thanks Jordan. Jack Whiton's going.
So you're going to be without Croker, You're going to
(08:48):
be without Whiton. There are people who've been questioning about
Elliot Whitehead. Is he the player that he used to be?
Do you suddenly say, well, now's the time let's free
up some cap space ABC if we can buy someone
who is has three or four good years left in
them and have them as an inspirational player for youngsters
and make it public, as we've discussed before, make it
(09:10):
public about a rebuilt.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
I have some very strong feelings on this. Jordan Rapana
will start there. Jordan had an unhappy game on the weekend,
but you can never ever question Jordan's effort on Raiders
on Mix the previous week, three out of the four
of us gave him Man of the Match. I don't
think Jordan's a problem. He signed on for next year.
I do prefer him playing on the wing. I don't
think he plays his best footy at fullback. I think
(09:32):
he's I think he's better on the wing, coming in
off the wing, getting those carries out of dummyhalf. The
Jack Whiteon problem, that's a problem that's gonna go away.
Interesting to see what they do in the number six jersey.
They have signed or reportedly signed Ethan Sanders from the
Paramatta system. Young guy probably going to try and get
him out of his deal a year early, so we
can get him here a year early. Whether or not
(09:53):
he's ready for first grade or not, I don't know.
There's been rumors getting around about Simmy Sosagi from the Knights,
about Junior Omone from the Dragons. There's been talk maybe
Sebastian Chris might play in the halves. I think the
future is bright in the back line. Fullback will be
an interesting position next year. Xavier Savage, Sebastian Kris.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
What's happened to the to the X man Xavier?
Speaker 3 (10:13):
Yeah, but he got injured a few weeks ago, did
his hammy.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Okay, but prior to that he form was down and
he was off the face of the earth.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
I actually think if he'd been fit, I think he
would have played last weekend. Ethan Strage has got a
huge future ahead of him. I'm not worried about the
backs so young Chevy Stewart as well.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
About the forwards. I'm concerned in Trevillion. I've pulled up
the latest list here. Okay, you've got Trevillian Mariota, who
I think is there's plenty of upside there. Clay Webb
hardly cited.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
I've never seen him, yeah in first grade. I mean
Corey had we to nighter has has an asterisk next
to him at the moment.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
You've got you've got to think so on that score,
next one on the list is Corey Hawsbrough. There's a player.
There is a player, although again since Origin just doesn't
quite seem to have.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
I actually think he's been pretty good. He led the
tackle count on the weekend.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
Danny Levy out with a second broken jaw for the year,
but signed again for next year. Elliott Whitehead not the
player that he used to be, and a lot of
people saying that now Emi Gooler has re signed Peru
Hudson Young again seems to have been in a bit
of a funk since Origin. There's a few questions at
(11:27):
the forwards. You got Tapa Papa Solaw, Holla, Starling, Mooney
and Wolford. You know, there's some okay players there, but
it's seemingly bereft of world beaters.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
Some of the players, Elliott Whitehead and Josh Papa Ley
have been amazing service for the club. Best football is
probably behind them. Joe Tarpaney, I don't think he's been
as good this year as he was last year. I
think Corey Horsber and Hudson Young, I think they're going
just fine. They're having their Hudson Young in particular, He's
gonna have his good games and bad games. The concern
(12:00):
I've got is a lack of good middle forwards coming
through Trey Mooney we haven't seen much of. I have
a concern around the edge forwards as well, because when
Elliott Whitehead and Corey had a weird and either were unavailable,
they put Corey Harsbron on edge.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
That's a worry.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
I think they need to go through and just really
see who's out there who they can get. I know
why they try to get David Fafita so hard, because
he's exactly what the club needs.
Speaker 3 (12:27):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
They need a superstar forward who can create something, who
can punch through a defensive line. So I think I
think that's gonna be an interesting offseason for the Green Machine.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
Well, we'll see what happens. But one thing we do
know for sure. In addition to Jack Whitton not being
at the club because he signed elsewhere, Jared Croker won't
be there. And I guess it now is as good
as the time as they need to actually do it
and say Jered Croker, will we salute you?
Speaker 3 (12:47):
They're super serious sports show.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
Moving right along and on AFL Grand Final Day, they
have a long standing tradition of parading the retiring players
from around the league. That procession has the prospects of
being longer than the game itself.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
This year there's a lot of players retiring.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
There's been a lot of retirement announcements in the past
week or so. Of course, there has been one announcement
of continuing their career. Rory sloan As is going to
extend his career into a sixteenth season Adelaide.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
That's interesting because he's played two hundred and fifty five ish.
It's another few this year, gets up to to sixty ish.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
I was going to get another two this year. Anyway,
we move on, Yeah, we move on to the players
some time. Yes, yes, a big one announced Tuesday today
was a few big ones well, rewolked, Yes, and a.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
Three time premiership player.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
Well, let me do the list. Oh sorry, my list?
Speaker 2 (13:42):
Okay, I just want to get in your book of
feuds for you know, Adam Jensen's lists.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
No, don't interrupt my list.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
These are the rules, Okay, of course we mentioned Luke
Showy last week. Isaac Smith so four time premiership player,
two hundred and seventy eight games for Hawthorne and Geelong,
so he's calling at quits at the end of the year.
Geelong still a chance to win the premiership.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
I think he's the last. I may have this wrong.
He's the last remaining four time premiership player in the
league at the moment.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
He very well could be. That's interesting.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
I reckon he might be. This is just you said
four time premiership player and something's popped up in my head.
It was a conversation I was having that someone was saying
that these, barring Geelong or Richmond doing something bizarre this year,
there will be no four time premiership players left in
the league in twenty twenty four.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
Well, if Geelong do do something bizarre this year and
win the premiership, he'll be a five.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Time premiership and he's still going to be there.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
Ben Cunnington two hundred and thirty eight games for the Kangaroos,
came back from a twenty twenty one testicular cancer diagnosis,
came back in twenty twenty two, so amazing, amazing achievement
there from Ben Cunnington to come back. He also holds
the record for the most contested possessions in a single game,
with thirty two against Richmond in twenty eighteens.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
Quite don't know if it.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
Speaking of the Kangaroos, Jack Zebel two hundred and seventy
seven games, including one hundred and eleven games as captain
for the Kangaroos. Of course he plays with the Kangaroos,
so no premierships. Same thing for Aaron Hall one hundred
and sixty one games for the Suns and the Kangaroos.
Obviously no premierships. Again, then we get into premiership territory.
Trent Kotchin three time premiership captain, three hundred and five
(15:25):
games of course for Richmond. What else did he win
Chris Coleman but didn't get it on the night?
Speaker 2 (15:32):
Did he get a Brownlow that he was retrospectively awarded?
Speaker 3 (15:34):
He did? He did.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
Cotchin was jointly awarded the twenty twelve brown Low with
Sam Mitchell after original winner Joe Watson gave up the
honor in twenty sixteen after he was among thirty four
Essendon players suspended for doping code violations. While we're on
the Tigers. Yes, Jack Revolt, Yeah, what a player, What
a player, Three time Coleman medalers, three time premiership winner.
(15:56):
He will hang up the boots at the mcg on
Saturday after opting to not play on in twenty twenty four. Well,
he's incredible play. He's one of those guys you would
pay money just to watch him. Can belt out a
song post Grand Final two?
Speaker 2 (16:10):
Belt out as opposed to sing yeah?
Speaker 1 (16:12):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (16:12):
What was that? Was the mister Brightside? That's it? Yeah,
I'm not going to sing it. No, oh god, no,
we don't we do it. We don't do that here and.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
Jack, while while we credit you for your enthusiasm, a
little less on the performers, perhaps, yes.
Speaker 1 (16:26):
Yes, begging of premiership winners. Shannon Hern twenty eighteen Eagles
premiership captain and also part of the two thousand and
six squad, didn't play in their premiership win over the
Swans that year. But he's retiring after he's played three
hundred and thirty two games. I'm not sure if he's back
before the end of the season, and he's had a
lot of hamstring problems in recent years. Nick natt Nui
(16:46):
announced his retirement yesterday was originally contracted for the twenty
twenty four season.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
That's disappointing. It is his injuries have ruined his career.
Speaker 2 (16:55):
He's had two knee reconstructions.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
He has and he's also had a had an achilles tear,
which is why he hasn't played this year. Actually missed
the twenty eighteen Grand Final due to one of those
knee reconstructions. So two hundred and five games for the
West Coast Eagles.
Speaker 3 (17:11):
And should have been close to three hundred should have been.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
Paddy McCartin, the twenty seven year old who was the
number one pick in the twenty fourteen AFL draft, has
retired due to ongoing issues with concussion.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Now he missed I think he missed a full season
or something. After he got delisted by the Saints.
Speaker 3 (17:29):
Yeah, he was out of the league. And then he
got brought back in by the Swans. Yeah. I was
joined his brother I.
Speaker 2 (17:35):
Called it was either his first game up or his
second game up in a preseason game for the Swans.
I remember that, and even then he wasn't the player
that he was, but he was. He was still very
very good.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
I think we're going to see a lot more players
retire at younger ages, not just in the AFL, but
I think the NRL as well. I think concussions is
going to force a lot more early retirements than I
think we've probably seen before.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
And you just hope that he's okay as he gets
to fifty sixty, seventy years old as well. You hope
that those multiple concusions in the case of back of
Patty McCartin, don't take a toll on his mental health
and well being.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
Now one of those players has won a Norm Smith Medal,
Chris Common, which one of those players I've listened, actually
two of them, because Luke Showey won. One who we
mentioned last week who was very recently.
Speaker 3 (18:27):
Did Ringo get a Norm Smith? He did not, Okay,
tell me Isaac Smith. I did too.
Speaker 1 (18:32):
He was the twenty twenty two Norm Smith medalist. So
I was wondering if you if you knew that.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
No, I don't pay much attention to the Norsemith dominated
that game. He was outstanding.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
Gary Ablot got a Norse Smith medal in nineteen eighty
nine and a losing Grand Final side kicked nine was
a miraculous performance. And then disappointed Gary Ablett walked back
across Port Philip Bay walked on water all the way back.
Speaker 3 (18:50):
The man was great, but yeah sometimes well I lost
four Grand finals in seven seasons.
Speaker 2 (18:56):
Yeah, who'd be a Galong supporter back then? But it's
turned around intend anyway to the multitude of players are
thus far in the AFL, and I suspect there's a
few more names still to come. We best do it again.
AJ are you ready?
Speaker 3 (19:07):
We salute you.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
Let's roll back around to football soccer. Call it what
you will. Did the opening weekend of the English Premier
League catch your eye?
Speaker 3 (19:17):
Aj?
Speaker 2 (19:18):
Or did you sort of go under the raino because
of what Matildas were doing a.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
Little bit under the radar because of what the Matilda's
were doing. But one particular result, actually two particular results
caught my eye.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
Yeah, there's one that caught my eye and we'n't got
a sound effect for it if you really really interested.
Speaker 3 (19:32):
Softer than Tottenham.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
New manager, new season, same old soft Tottenham. They scored first,
yeah they did. They then did what Spurs do. They
scored first, they gave up the lead, they equalized before halftime,
and then the second forty five there was nothing. They
drew against Brentford, who are with the greatest respect to
Brentford are pretty average side. But then again, I think
Tottenham are a pretty average side right now. And I've
(19:55):
been a Spurs fan, as I say this time of year,
I've been a Tottenham fan for all my life, for
my sins.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
Do you know that Fulham have won every game so
far this season.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
Or one of them or one of them?
Speaker 1 (20:06):
Yeah, okay, great, Yeah, they scored the first goal and
unlike Tottenham, they held onto their lead.
Speaker 3 (20:10):
They won one nil over Everton, who I thought would
be better. They're not. No, they're not.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
No.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
If I was a Toffies fan, I'd be really really worried.
Speaker 1 (20:19):
Well, Fulham have got a chance to do what Tottenham
failed to do. They've got Brentford this week this weekend.
Speaker 3 (20:24):
Beat them as well.
Speaker 1 (20:25):
Yeah they will, of course they will because it's Fulham
and they're good. Undefeated Manchester Tottenham undefeated too, but that
won again.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
Yeah, I know, Manchester United to beat Wolves with sports.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
Better offering Wolverhampton at sixteen dollars, I believe this morning.
Speaker 3 (20:42):
Well man, you only won by one. You're right there,
you just gone through your phone.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
I'm just going I'll just try to actually get up
to get up the Premier League table. So so what
is there? There's six sides who won their first game Newcastle, Brighton,
Man City, Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Fulham and Man United. So yeah,
so seven sides who won their first game. Which one
goes the longest before they drop a point? Of those
seven sides.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
Man City, Man City, Yeah, they're the best team. They're
probably going to win the title. Harry Kane, what's the
situation there? Is?
Speaker 2 (21:13):
He gone?
Speaker 3 (21:13):
He's gone, He's gone.
Speaker 2 (21:14):
He made his deboot for Bayern Munich on the weekend
in I can't even remember who they played or what
the score was.
Speaker 3 (21:22):
He's dead to me. Did Tottenham get anything in return? Oh,
they would have got something pack of chips or something.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
I don't a soft drink pie, a boccan, a soft
drink a pie. It's a complicated thing, but there's always
money that goes to the club. There's probably money goes
to the club that developed Harry Kane as well. I
think there's still some sort of trickle down thing as well.
I don't understand it fully, but yeah, either way, he's
off to Germany and which means that he will be
largely vacant from media speculation in Australia because how much
(21:50):
attention does the Bundesliga get on Australian media. Not much exactly.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
Well, time's getting a heat now, so every time Tottenham lose,
you'll know because of Ange.
Speaker 2 (21:59):
Yeah, indeed, enjoy that. Every time Tottenham lose, I already
knew anyway.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
It's it's such a pessimistic fan, it is.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
Well, try it for fifty years and see how you feel.
Speaker 1 (22:09):
Are you going to real out that the letter you
set to Carlton and just change Carlton to Tottenham?
Speaker 2 (22:14):
Nah? Nah, No. I was born into a Tottenham family.
There was no real option. I didn't become a cardon
support till I was about seven. Getting close to the
end of this edition of the Super Serious Sports Show.
My name is Chris Colmen. Adam Jansen across the way
from me. A few things we've got to bounce through
in relatively quick terms. James Harden has been in the news.
Speaker 1 (22:35):
Yeah, it's been a little bit slow for NBA news
of late, but James Harden certainly changed that.
Speaker 3 (22:40):
In the early hours of this morning or whenever it was,
he was.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
Filmed saying Darryl Moury is a liar, and I will
never be part of an organization that he's a part of.
Let me say that again, Darryl Moury is a liar,
and I will never be a part of an organization
that he's a part of.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
The views expressed there are not those of Adam Jansen.
They are those of James Hardener direct quote.
Speaker 1 (23:00):
So, James Harden, Philadelphia seventy sixers player, he's bounced around
to a couple of teams now that he's been traded
a couple of times. He basically re signed with the
seventy sixers under the agreement, or he's saying that he
would be traded. The seventy six Ers haven't been able
to find a viable trade and they're the guy that
manages all that. Daryl Moury has basically said, Yeah, James
Hard's just going to play from this year. James Harden
(23:23):
clearly does not agree.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
Always works out so well. When you have a player
who doesn't want to be at your club and you
say you've got to play for us.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
Well, there's not too much to report on it yet
because there's only breaking news this moning. It's going to
be really interesting to see how this plays out. James Harden.
I don't think he's good a basketball player as he
thinks he is.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
It's a bit of that around.
Speaker 1 (23:42):
Yeah, I think he's I think he's well and truly
pass his best. So this is going to be an
interesting thing. But he he said, I think it was
like a kid's basketball camp or so. It was just
a really random platform for it. We'll see how that
plays out.
Speaker 3 (23:53):
Over the next few weeks.
Speaker 2 (23:54):
I have two questions for you from the world of basketball,
and nothing nothing to do with the NBA, But the
Boomers are in the midst of a series that is
build as the Boomers versus the World. Basically, it's three
pre World Cup friendlies being played in Melbourne. I note
they moved the Wednesday one forward so that it would
be finished in time for the players and Australian fans
(24:14):
to watch the Matilda's game. There's another game that's going
to go head to head with the Matilda's. We watched
by seventeen people and a dog. But the Boomers have
to drop one player is my understanding from the squad
that is left, which doesn't have Matthew delivered over in
which I'm very disappointed about. But anyway, they have to
drop one player. So this is my first question who.
Speaker 1 (24:35):
For me, it would probably be Jack White. So Jack
White plays in the NBA, doesn't get much game time
at all. The most likely ones appear to be either
him or Xavier Cooks, who was the NBL MVP for
the Kings this season. Cooks now plays for the Washington Wizards.
For me, it'll be Jack White. Surprisingly, a couple of
(24:56):
names that have been mentioned, Dyson Daniels and Josh Green,
who are very emly entrenched in their lineup NBA players.
So yeah, it's going to be interesting. I think it'll
probably be Jack White. And that World Cup is that
next week or the week starts on the twenty fifth
of August, it's about nine ten days away. My other question,
again relates to the Boomers. I'm hearing a lot of
people saying the Boomers are going to this World Championship
(25:17):
with the aim of winning the whole thing. They want
to win the whole box and dice the complete kitt kerboodle.
Are they faired income in that? Is there enough talent
in that squad? Bearing in mind that it's a World
Championship and even though America has probably one hundred and
fifty or US the one hundred and fifty of the
best two hundred players in the world or something like that. Right,
(25:39):
they still have a similar representation of NBA players to
several other countries, including Australia. Is Australia a legit chance
of a gold in this thing?
Speaker 3 (25:49):
Yes? Okay, outside chance, but yes there. They might be
a bit small.
Speaker 1 (25:55):
They've got a lot of guards that don't have a
lot of big guys. But the interesting thing you mentioned
about how how the US's biggest powerhouse in basketball. The
three MVP finalists in the NBA this year, you are
sent in to compo.
Speaker 2 (26:09):
He's not American, He's Greek. Nikolae Jokic, he's not American.
Speaker 3 (26:13):
Nope.
Speaker 1 (26:14):
Joel Embiid, who won the MVP title, He's also not American.
It's interesting. I don't think the US are as dominant
as they think they are.
Speaker 3 (26:21):
I've got other questions about basketball.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
I'm going to put them on, but I do think
Australia are a chance. I'm excited for this.
Speaker 2 (26:27):
Look, look, you know, I'll watch basketball. I just don't
get I just don't get caught up in it. That's
the thing.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
You get caught up in baseball up in baseball.
Speaker 2 (26:35):
I want to talk about baseball for a second, because
last week we touched very briefly on the Women's Baseball
World Cup that Australia was taking part in. Wasn't a
tournament to necessarily write home great things about the Australians
there when we spoke last week. They lost their first
game to the US two three. They went into extra
innings against Mexico with the score tied at eight all
(26:55):
and lost sixteen eight's that's how. That's just an almighty collapse.
Speaker 3 (27:01):
I'm even mad. That's actually impressive.
Speaker 2 (27:03):
Yeah, that's an almighty collapse in extra innings, beat South
Korea ten to three, then come up against Canada and
it was a winner. It was a win or go
home game. Basically, it was to try and keep themselves
alive in the tournament, and they lost to Canada eleven seven.
They beat Hong Kong nine to two in their final game,
having trailed to nil at one stage, so they finish
fourth in their pool. What I wasn't aware of is
(27:25):
that the World Baseball Softball Confederation had decided this year
they were going to have the World Cup. This is
not actually the World Cup. This is the first group
stage of the twenty twenty four World Cup. The second
group stage is still to happen, with another six countries
in it, and then the top two from each group
plus two world card sides will play off in the
twenty twenty four Women's World Cup final round in I
(27:49):
think it's back in Canada next year. Australia won't be there.
I don't really care anymore. But it's just confusing. It's
a silly format and they need to change it. It's
the World Cup that's going to take more than twelve
months to play that by any measure, is too long.
Speaker 3 (28:03):
That's just silly.
Speaker 2 (28:05):
Do we actually bring him on? Do we bring the
grand slain off the bench for this one?
Speaker 3 (28:08):
We do? Oh, but that's just silly. We haven't heard it.
Speaker 2 (28:12):
We haven't heard it for a while. But he's still
sitting there, just waiting to say that for us. And finally,
let's go full circle on this one. Everyone got caught
up in the drama and the excitement of the longest
penalty shootout in World Cup history, Men's or women's last weekend,
when it took ten kicks apiece plus one that Australia
(28:32):
had to save twice to reach a result. In the
Australia Cup, the Australian soccer football knockout competition, Sydney FC
came up against the Central Coast Mariners, was tied three
all after extra time, it went to penalties. It got
down to the eleventh kick on each side to reach
a result.
Speaker 3 (28:52):
Everyone got to kick.
Speaker 2 (28:53):
Everyone got to kick. It's like a primary school thing.
Speaker 3 (28:55):
Everyone got to kick.
Speaker 2 (28:56):
Sidney won at ten nine in the Australia Cup and
we wish them well. I guess in the next round, Oh,
Sydney FC or Australia Sydney FC and Australia. I wish
Sydney FC, but certainly go the Matilda's.
Speaker 3 (29:08):
I can't wait. I'm so excited.
Speaker 2 (29:10):
And if you're listening to this on the radio and
you know the result because you're driving home from a
watch party or whatever, just bear in mind we recorded
this yesterday, Okay.
Speaker 1 (29:16):
Now now today we'll be about finishing about now. Okay,
you're listening to the wrong thing, you are, especially if
it's going to penalties. Turn us off, go do something else.
I'll catch you next week.
Speaker 3 (29:26):
Bye. Amplify CBR
