Speaker 1 (00:00):
Maddie Jay, I actually can't believe this day has come,
but this is it.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
This is it was love one.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
Oh my god. Well, I've tried to like put together
all of your favorite things for your very last segment
on air with us. So you've said you love Christmas,
so I've made a fun Facts Friday Christmas Edition.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
Fun Fact Friday.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
You also have said you love sweets, sugar, gingerbread, smash cakes.
So I've gone to Woolies and gotten as many of
their desserts as I can, and we have a gingerbread
smash cake here, Brittany.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
You shouldn't have. Honestly, I don't know what I've done
to deserve such an amazing radio host, but thank you
so much. Boy.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
I'm gonna let you smash it.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
But you can only smash it when you get one
of the fun Fact Fridays.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
Right, Oh, how do you feel about that?

Speaker 3 (00:49):
Good? I love it. I love it. I love it.
You know I like violence, Brittany, and there's no other
way I'd want to go out than a bit of
Christmas violence with treats the dream come true.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
Okay, well, you need to get one of these correct
true or false. Home alone is the highest grossing Christmas
movie of all time.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
False. That's right.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
I thought you'd get that wrong. So it was Home
Alone until I.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Guess, Can I guess what it is? Yeah? I want
to say I think it's going to be an animation,
and I want to say it's the Grinch. It is,
Oh my god.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Yeah, So it was Home Alone until twenty eighteen when
the Grinch took over.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
What yeah, smash the cake?

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Why can people believe it's a Christmas miracle?

Speaker 1 (01:37):
It is a Christmas You did say you're you were
really into Christmas?

Speaker 3 (01:40):
All right? I just found I don't know what this
is from. It's like a broomstick handle, but I found
it on the floor and can I use this?

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yeah? Can I film? You do this while we're on it?

Speaker 3 (01:53):
Can I go?

Speaker 2 (01:54):
You go smash it?

Speaker 1 (01:55):
Three?

Speaker 3 (01:55):
Two?

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Oh? Okay, okay, stop, okay, that stop? Oh no, that
went everywhere.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
I got really into that.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
You were taking a lot of anger out there.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
Oh my god, that's delicious. Okay.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Back to the Christian edition. Fun fact writing, True or false?

Speaker 1 (02:18):
Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer was almost named Reginald.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
True. That is true. That's a lucky guess. I knew it.
I had no idea.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
The red nose reindeer was almost called rollo.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
I'm going to say that's false, not also true? Yes, okay,
it's almost on a hat trick.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
Did they use to spray Christmas trees with fox urine
to discourage people from stealing them?

Speaker 3 (02:45):
What country are we talking about?

Speaker 2 (02:47):
I don't know what country.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
I want to say fox you write, I mean back
in the day. Sure, I would say true, it's.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
True because fox urine is apparently so r answered and
like you cannot get rid of the smell, So if
it's in like a closed space, it would just knock
you out cold.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
I wonder why they wouldn't get like skunks.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
They use both fox You're inn and skunk's bro Wow.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
Wow, there you go.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Okay, true or false?

Speaker 1 (03:15):

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Mistlet she lived on a Christmas tree fie.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
Oh he's good. I tried to throw a spannery.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
I know because we have a little book at home
and it's the history of It's like the story of
Taylor Swift that I have to read it to May
like once a week, and every time we get to
the Christmas tree part. But it's like, can you believe it?
I'm like, I know, I can't believe it.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
Okay, this isn't a tru or false. I just want
to know if you can get it.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
What is the most successful Christmas song of all time?

Speaker 2 (03:44):
It is who sings it?

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Rya carries a song? All I want for Christmas is
I think it makes like I think it makes like
four million a year in royalties.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
No, it's actually wrong. It's being Crosby's White Christmas.

Speaker 3 (03:59):
I don't believe that. Yeah, I want a fact check.
Fact check, please, sact check.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
In physical sales it's been Crosby's White Christmas, but streaming
it's Mariah Carey's all they want for Christmas?

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Thank you, thank you? Okay, do you want one more please?

Speaker 1 (04:12):
The song jingle Bells was originally written for Thanksgiving, not Christmas.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
Wow, you've really ended on a tricky one here.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
True or false?

Speaker 3 (04:20):
This is like the million dollar question, can I find
a friend?

Speaker 2 (04:24):
No, Grace, she wrote it.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
I wrote it, unfortunately, Okay for Thanksgiving. I want to say.
It's one of those ones where I'm sure it's I'm
sure it's true. I want to say false. But because
I know Grace is a sneaky little producer. I'll say
true is true.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
It was originally written for Thanksgiving, originally named the one
Horse Open Sleigh.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
James Lord Pipond composed.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
The song in eighteen fifty for he's Thanksgiving Sunday school class.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
There you go interesting. I cannot wait to tell my
mother these facts.

Speaker 2 (04:55):

one more.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
Oh my god, the very first artificial Christmas tree was
made from dyed goose feathers.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
I'm going to go with my gut. My gut tells
me false.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
