Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, when you think of shipping containers, Cam, usually you
think of, you know, a storage facility perhaps or them
being used for importing or exporting.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Well, it's a transport unit, really it is.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
Do you think about it as a place to live?

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Well, so, and I would imagine most people would not
to start off with. For myself, I've been to a
couple of these epic shipping containers that we have in
and around Camera in the Capitol region and they are amazing.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
And some of them not only can be a place
to live, but can be pretty special, you know, decked
out to the ninth Correct And Sun Vung is director
at Sonic Steel, who's going to talk to us a
bit more about shippy container homes.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Good morning, Sun, Good morning Renee and Cam.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
How are you guys, Yeah, good, Thanks so much for
joining us to chat about this. Can you give us
sort of an overview of how shipping containers can be
a place to live?

Speaker 3 (00:53):
First off, it's nothing different than just a different construction
method of a place of residence. It's not so much
how it is as a place to leave. It's more
about how we build it. And as with any construction method,
there's different pros and cons with containers, there are pros

(01:15):
and cons and the issue with how you control the
climate z owne, ventilation, condensation, But as long as these
are addressed in a way that stopped them from happening,
then they would be just the same as any other home.
The benefits in that they are very modula to build,

(01:36):
you can, as you said, camp, they can be fitted
out and decked out to the owner's preferences. But also
more in that they are very trendy, very industrial, so
it's very appealing to people into that sort of realm
as well.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
Yeah, yeah, okay, so interesting. I love this. Yeah, And
what are.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Some of the building code considerations that you have to
take into account because here in the Act there's been
recent changes to the planning laws and so this is
going to make it easier for people who have got
space on their land to bring either build a tiny
home or put a shipping container in, like what you're
talking about. So what are some of the considerations that
we need to take into account?

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Correct, So with the new planning changes and updates, what
people are going to be aware of is that all
the buildings that are going to be put in the
backyard or in their block as a second dwelling, they
need to be comply with the Bidding Code and the
same with containers or attaining home that they need to

(02:37):
be complied with the NCC and they have to be
certified by a qualified building surveyor or certifire Sure, and.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
Can you describe to us one of the coolest setups
that you've installed, because I'm assuming some are quite sort
of next level.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
And this is the bit that I've been most looking
forward to hearing about because, as I mentioned sung to
you through the week, I went out to a place
at Google here which is close to Canberra, and it
was about nine containers that were bolted together, welded together,
and like you said, it was that really industrial field,
but it was plumbed, it was heated, it was cool,
it had everything. So what's the best one that you've done.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
Every project that we've done is is unique because we
custom design and built each and everywhere one of them
to suit the customer. But yeah, we've done one in
South Australia. The double story has decking on the top
level as a teris, so the client had a three
sixty degree view over the ocean. Another one we've built
was in areas inlet in Victoria, the four container joined

(03:39):
together in the middle of a bushblock, so it's very
serene and you know, it blends very well into the surroundings.
But also it did have minimal impact on the on
the on the surroundings block. The minimum construction, minimum tradeing
because everything was built offside in our factory and get

(03:59):
craned on and installed on site.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
And what is the demand like for shipping container homes
at the moment.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
The container home has been around for a long time.
It's just that we've come out on board with a
new a new way of building it, a new innovative systems.
Like I said at the beginning, to address condensation and ventilation.
Those are the biggest biech issues that people normally don't
really look into or tach for granted because in the
normal home those used not to be used to be

(04:29):
left sort of issue. But now with the building code
requiring a more efficient home, more air tight home, they
become more of an issue. With you know, a sealed
a sealed unit or home that has nowhere for condensation
extras moisture to escape. Container is worse of a case

(04:51):
because it is still and is fully welded so it's
very air tight. So yeah, the two issues are firstly
too look at contemplation how to make the container breathe
or ventilate effectively and efficiently. Secondly is the insulation, obviously

(05:13):
because you're in a metabox. If those issues are addressed
and resolved, then yes, there will be a very very
good way of building and very attractive I want one renee.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
Yeah, absolutely, I think lots of people will after hearing
your conversation. Son Well, thank you so much for joining
us and sharing that with this. So I've been flicking
through all the photos of your projects on your website
on the Sonic Steel website as we've been talking, and
it's absolutely fascinating what you guys do. Yeah, thank you
so much for joining us, and have a great weekend.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Thank you guys, you too. If you guys need any container.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
You know where to go?

Speaker 3 (05:49):
Sure do.

Speaker 1 (05:51):
That's Sun will direct your Sonic Steel. Go check out
their website is really cool.
