Speaker 1 (00:11):
So you're listening to a Mamma Mia podcast. Mamma Mia
acknowledges the traditional owners of land and borders that this
podcast is recorded on.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
From Mamma Mia. Welcome to the Spill, your daily pop
culture fixed. I'm m Burnham and I'm Laura Brodnick. Happy holidays,
We're still here, back in your ears and guess what
you don't want to say?

Speaker 1 (00:37):
What? Oh what?

Speaker 2 (00:38):
On today's show, we are diving into some of the
biggest celebrity scandals we've come across this year. There's been
a lot. We've narrowed down to four big ones that
we want to talk about, not necessarily the biggest scandals,
but probably our favorite ones that we've indulged in. But
first we want to just kind of like talk about

(01:00):
some honorable mentions.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
Yes, so there are a few serious stories in the
mix we just wanted to acknowledge as the ones that
really dominated the news cycle, but ones that we've talked
to extensively this year, and it looks like we don't
talk about extensively in twenty twenty five as well, But
just to acknowledge that these have appeared in the news
cycle this year and we're not happy about it, so
I guess the ongoing Sean Combe's story. At the time

(01:24):
of recording, he remains in federal custody on charges of
sex trafficking and racketeering. A number of celebrity names have
been pulled into the case, and multiple people have come
forward with allegations of sexual assault, rape, sexual exploitation. It's
been one of the most disturbing stories of the year,
I think, and for all the brave victims who have

(01:45):
come out and shared their story, and of course Seawan
Combs has continued to plead not guilty in the criminal trial,
and so this is one that I think, well, unfortunately
for the people have to share their story, but hopefully
fortunately for justice, this is also going to be a
big story going into twenty twenty five.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
I've got a bit of a lighter one.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
Yeah, let's get away from bad men doing bad things.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
I'm pushing it by saying that there's fault under the
category of the word scale. Okay, I've included it anyway.
Jennifer Lopez, more specifically Jennifer Lopez documentary. So j Loo
made an album called this is Me Dot Dot Dot Now.
She then made Howbout You, a visual album she tried

(02:27):
to do a bound sage, didn't she. That was called
this is Me dot dot dot Now a love Story,
and then she made a documentary on that visual album
called the Greatest Love Story Never Told. Unfortunately, we were
told that love story and then that love story went away.
But there was a lot of drama that surrounded the documentary. Specifically,

(02:50):
I would say the scandal part of it was the
memification that came out of the clips from the documentary.
More specifically, that's one scene that I feel like everyone
can picture in their heads where she's in a gym
and she has a hair out and she's like ruffling
a hare and she was talking about how this is
how her hair used to be when she was a child,

(03:10):
and she said, just a crazy little girl running around
in the Bronx.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
And everyone's like, Jlo, you haven't lived in the Bronx
for many, many, many years, and you keep harping back
on it, which you know, I feel like, you just
do what you need to do to tell your story
for cinematic experience, and that's what she's about with.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
This specific documentary. I'm so glad I'm not rich, because
I would be doing this with every single man I
date and that's exactly what Jayla did.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
Yeah, to keep it.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
On the lighter note, I also have another one that
kind of gets a bit murky. We have talked about
this across a few episodes, but everything that happened with
the film that came out this year called It ends
with us and the cast members involved to give you
a brief overview. It stars Blake Lively. It stars and
was directed by Justin Baldoni. The movie comes out, but

(03:58):
before we get to see the movie, the cast are
doing press, and we realize that Justin Baldoni is doing
press by himself and Blake Lively and the rest of
the cast are doing press together. We also realize that
the press junkets are quite different. So Justin Baldoni's using
his interviews as a way to kind of shine a
light on domestic violence and speak about women who had

(04:21):
to go through all that incredibly difficult hardship, while Blake
Lively and the rest of the cast are kind of
playing like kind of cutesy buzzfeedy games.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
With each other.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
People were like they are marketing two completely different movies.
We were able to see the movie quite early on
at the screening and I was not too shocked because
I had read the book. It's based on the Collin
Hoover novel with the same name, and it's about a

(04:51):
love story that turns dark very very quickly. It involves
domestic violence and a woman coming out of that and
like growing with that and falling pregnant. Like there's so
many themes in this one movie. But it was very
clear that Blake Lively was marketing it as a rom com,
and it was quite alarming because a lot of people

(05:13):
who do get triggered by domestic violence or kind of
wanted a warning before seeing the movie were completely taken
aback and had no idea that what was coming. And
then it just started snowballing from there. There were clips
of people who have filmed Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively
looking like they were having an argument, when sometimes it
could have just been a director or like, I don't know.

(05:35):
Note they had to release statements, other cast members released
as statements. It was just very messy. Ryan Reynolds got involved.
It was this whole whole thing.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
So another scandal from this year that we wanted to
bring up. Look, this one, I feel like was more
scandal that you and I were really shocked by and
we became very attached to and we were reported on it,
I think over two different spill episodes, which is why
and I'm sure most well because it was an evolving
story with many twists and turns, and I think a
lot of people might have forgotten about it, which is
why we just wanted to bring it to your attention.
The Calm Film Festival security card who tried to take

(06:07):
down four different celebrities. Do you remember this? I remember this.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
I wonder what she's doing now?

Speaker 1 (06:12):
Yeah, where is she's We should like find out what
she's doing.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
Interviewed by two brilliant entertainment hosts. We're here.

Speaker 1 (06:19):
Which other celebrities are you looking to target this year
coming into the next festival season?

Speaker 2 (06:23):
And are they all ethnic? Yes?

Speaker 1 (06:25):
Well, that is the thing, isn't it? Is that some
images started going viral from the carn Film Festival of
a female usher. I guess you can tell from the
photos like kind of pushing and but you know those
red carpets, like we've talked about them, not that we've
been to carm but we've been to Sydney On's and
trying to move people on the red car. But when
it's like it's got crowd control, you know, there's hundreds
of people trying to move into a space. Everyone's trying

(06:46):
to get photos, You're trying to move people along, people
are falling and tripping over each other, and sometimes the
ushers do get quite you know, intense. But I've never
seen anything quite like this usher who was like physically
grabbing and pulling a bunch of celebrities. So I think
others were like a lot more international celebrities, so there
wasn't like one kind of big recognizable name. So the

(07:06):
photos were just kind of going out there and they're like, oh,
they're pushing that woman in like the beautiful dry And
then when it happened to Kelly Roland, because obviously that's
a very recognizable name. So she was coming up the
red carpet and you can see her being scolded by
an usher for stopping to take a photo, and then
the usher is leaning across and then you can see
Kelly Roland like leaning into her face and like looking
like she's yelling back and pointing, and she kind of

(07:28):
went viral for that and people were saying that she
was being unreasonable. And then the next day she did
another Red Carpet. She was asked about it, and she
teared up because she's like said, she was targeted by
this woman and she felt like quite upset about what
had happened.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
It was horrible because I remember we first saw I
think the worlfare saw the photos of Kelly looking angry
before understanding the story, and it immediately was like, oh,
the angry black woman. And then it was so fucked up,
like actually so messed up when we learned the full
story and how everyone's brains immediately went to that, Like,

(08:01):
I felt so so horrible when I watched that video
of her doing the interview because I've caused your tear up,
like that was absolutely devastating.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
I'm so glad that also happened, because I think that
really shocked people and changed the story and they were like, oh,
it's not just like the angry black woman Kelly Rowland
yelling at a poor security guy. Like there was so
much more of that story. And then other people who
had seen it on the Red Carpet all came forward
and said, this is what happened, and these are the
other women that were pushed and all that sort of stuff.
So I feel like it was. As much as it's
awful to see her crying on camera, it's almost a

(08:29):
good thing that that interview also went viral, so people
had context for what had happened.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
All right, I want to talk about my favorite scandal
of the year first. If you don't mind, go right ahead.
I want to take you on a bit of a story. Okay, okay,
so picture this. It's June eighteenth. You are not Laura Brodnick.

Speaker 1 (08:51):
Okay, you are, thank god, I'm sick of her. You're
a young, hot okay police officer. I was like, until
now you are describing me.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
Yes, young hot yes police, young male police. Oh sure,
you got a great gig in the richest part and
the most Hollywood esc part of the you survey. And
you're like, you know what, this lifestyle suits me. Suddenly
you see a car zoom past, and you're like, wait,
not my watch, not on my watch. As a young

(09:20):
hot police officer, I'm gonna catch this guy.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
I don't even need to hear the end of the story.
I'm already.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
Guy. You get to the car, you're like, excuse me, sir,
roll down the window. The guy rolls down the window,
you look at him, he looks at you. He looks
at you in a way where he's like nodding and smiling,
and you're like, this is not a smiling manner. You're
then like, do you know how fast you're going? He
doesn't respond, and then you're like, hmm, I can smell

(09:48):
some interesting flavors in your breath. If you can hear winds,
I've going through my microphone.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
I'm trying this so hard not to just laugh and
ruin this, so I'm just gonna be quiet.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
I can smell some interesting flavors. Sounds like alcohol. You
discover it could possibly be alcohol. You ask him to
step out of the car because guess what, you're gonna
arrest him. The man Strangely, you didn't ask him to talk,
but he does. He says under his breath, this is
going to ruin the tall. You're confused because you're like,

(10:22):
what tool? But you didn't say that in your head.
You said it out loud. He said what tour That
man replied the world too. Suddenly you were like, yep,
this man is drunk.

Speaker 1 (10:33):
I feel even that needs to win like a Grummy
for Best Spoken Word album or something that was beautiful.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
And here the man in question, Justin Timberlake.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
Justin Timberlake giving us the best sentence of twenty twenty four.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
I'm surprised we didn't get that on a T shirt.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
We saw those t shirts are somewhere. You put that
into Etsy and if it's not there, I confuse woman,
We'll make it for you.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
So this is a scandal of Justin Timblake getting arrested
after allegedly drink driving. The main part of the scandal
that went viral, though, is his mugshot that was plastered
all over social media with the what tour the world
tour everywhere. He also recently, in August this year, had

(11:17):
to plead guilty for the second time from those charges
of driving while intoxicated in the Hamptons. It's one of
those things that I feel like is going to keep
snowballing for him, and every time it happens, We're going
to get like a little new snippet. I also saw
a tweet because I think what everyone latched onto was

(11:38):
this came after the big Britney Spears memoir, where Justin
tim Blake was already kind of a bad taste in
our mouths. It happened after Janet Jackson and what we
found out at the super Bowl, and I just saw
a tweet that literally just said, what a great time
where Britney Spears fans and Janet Jackson fans can come
together in harmony.

Speaker 1 (11:57):
And you know the other best part of that story is,
don't not remember this from when it happened. Do you
know who that police officer is?

Speaker 2 (12:03):
You? No, it's not would you believe it's not me?

Speaker 1 (12:06):
No? He became very infamous. Is that he was infamous
before the Justin tim Lake arrest in the area with
the rich locals because again this is here saying gossip
online that I hear, so we're not verifying, but the
Hampton's police officer as they were calling him, apparently there's
only one, became quite infamous because apparently he moved to
the area and his his first job in the force,
and he was like there to like uphold the law,

(12:29):
and apparently it's meant to be like quite an unspoken
thing with all the wealthy people in that area. The
police give them a bit of if they're locals or
if they're like rich and living in the area or visiting,
they get a bit of a free pass and they
don't get pulled over. And apparently this man had just
been arresting people left, right and center for driving because
he's like, you know what, not on my watch. You speed,
you take a wrong turn, you park illegally, I've got you,

(12:50):
And apparently they were. The locals were fuming, and then
he met his match with Justin Timberlake and the Hampton's
police officer took him down. I want to find that man.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
To Oh my god, I love a boy boss. I
know his linkedlin must be going.

Speaker 1 (13:05):
On twenty four crush. I think so. I think he's
really twenty That's okay.

Speaker 2 (13:11):
From one criminal act to another.

Speaker 1 (13:13):
Oh where's this going?

Speaker 2 (13:14):
I know I haven't let you talk in a while,
but I'm on a.

Speaker 1 (13:16):
Rock and I think the people prefer it.

Speaker 2 (13:18):
Can I give you another character?

Speaker 1 (13:19):
Oh god?

Speaker 2 (13:19):
Okay, yeah, okay, I'll be a character. You probably have
the best vocals in the entire world. Okay, that's right,
you're Jennifer Hudson.

Speaker 1 (13:33):
Yeah. I would strongly agree.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
With that, and everyone knows you're the best singer. So
they were like, hey, Jay hud can you please do
us a favor. It's the upcoming thirtieth anniversary of the
Lion King. We want to do this big stage production. Okay,
we're inviting like original cast, we're inviting new cast, We're
inviting the stage cast. We're inviting celebrities to attend in

(13:56):
the audience because they'm not good enough to be on
stage with.

Speaker 1 (13:58):
The rest of us, and millennials we be weeping far
and wide seeing this show come back to stage.

Speaker 2 (14:03):
They had we need a vocalist who can not only
sing well, but can project, and we know you can project.
Would you please ease please be in this concert? And
jay Hud was like, no strings attached, and they were
like one string and she was like, what's the string?
And they were like, you have to do a performance

(14:25):
with icon and legend Northwest. Jay Hud was like who
is that and they were like Kim Kardashian and Kanye
West daughter. And she was like, got it. Is she
going to be a background actor like dancer? And they
were like, nope, she will be Simba.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
And then Jennifer picked up her oscar that she won
and mashed it through a window and thought, what is
the point of anything?

Speaker 2 (14:51):
So this scandal, it's not a massive scandal, but it's
probably the one that I feel like we got the
most heated talking about the.

Speaker 1 (14:59):
One that we enjoyed the most.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
But also you know what, there were layers the Northwest
favorite Nepo.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
Baby after Brooklyn Beckon please okay, so we've got some respect,
get our route if you get our roots.

Speaker 2 (15:11):
Brooklyn by my second favorite ne Bo Baby.

Speaker 1 (15:13):
I'm surprised he was not there. Yeah, why did we
think he was too busy.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
Making his hot anyway to busy making another photo album.
Northwest was granted the opportunity. I want to say that
I'm pretty sure her mum would have fought very hard
for to get up on stage for the thirtieth anniversary
of The Lion King and perform the most out of
tune version of I Just Can't Wait to Be King,

(15:38):
making it only my fifth favorite song. It used to
be my third and now it's my fifth. Mighty Kings
Enemies beware.

Speaker 1 (15:51):
Just quite a little.

Speaker 2 (15:54):
The main of the Little King last perform I'm I'm
not getting down, I'm working out roll five, I said.
The concert was in May four this year. She also

(16:17):
was able to wear whatever she wanted because I wanted
her to be comfortable on stage, so she chose a onesie. Well,
the rest of them weren't full checked out musical costumes
with hair and makeup. She also didn't learn the dance.

Speaker 1 (16:30):
Yeah, those people in the background who have been training
for years, the dancers, they look incredible. They're having to
lead her around stage, like.

Speaker 2 (16:38):
The security guard Clellye Roland that they're pulling her and
pushing across that stage. She's looking around because she realizes
she forgot both the lyrics and the dance moves, and
she just belt her little heart out and you know what,
it was shitty. It was the worst thing I've ever seen.
And someone needs to speak to Kim Kardashian for letting

(17:00):
her do that.

Speaker 1 (17:17):
Yes, so the outrage of this was quick and violent
once those clips of the performance started to go viral.
And again it's because you had like a Nathan Lane
up there, Jennifer Hudson, all the other vocalists from the
original motion picture and also from the Broadway show, and
you have them out there for this huge thing. But
everyone was just watching this Northwest performance and look like

(17:37):
I think sometimes because she comes across so sassy, and
she's so rich, and she's been famous since she was born,
we do forget she's just a little kid, And as
we have said previously, if anyone had filmed us or
given us these opportunities of that age, we also would
have been obnoxious. And she's stomping around stage not knowing
where she's going. She's got a massive smile on her face.
So at least she's absolutely having the time of her life,

(17:57):
which is why I think that Kim Kardashian doesn't regret this.
But when you see that in contrast to the other performers,
and also you think about all of the child performers
out there who have been the Broadway stows, the stage shows,
who could have done that role. Why it was a
bit ah yeah, a bit poor Northwest. But you know what,
she's mounced back.

Speaker 2 (18:15):
Just bounce back. You know what? Love her?

Speaker 1 (18:17):
Do?

Speaker 2 (18:17):
You follow Nod's Little Black Book on Insta? Obviously absolutely legend.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
Okay, this next one, I feel like we could dedicate
an entire podcast series two because it still blows my
mind that this conversation blew up the way that it
did and that it even took place in the first place.
What It's one of those ones where you look back
and like, I just don't know, It's like a really
crazy night out where you look back and like, I
just don't know how things escalated to this situation and I'm.

Speaker 2 (18:43):
Talking what are you talking about?

Speaker 1 (18:45):
I am talking about the allegations that Princess Catherine formerly
Kate Middleton, the allegations that went on for months and
months and months that she had disappeared, she was being
held prisoner, she was being impersonated. Those escalated to a
worldwide level until the truth came out.

Speaker 2 (19:01):
I feel uncomfortable.

Speaker 1 (19:03):
Yeah, well no, no, no, obviously, like we look back at
now and you're like, oh, yeah, that was crazy after
the truth about what happened came out, But you've got
to remember there was a time there where it was
the one thing that everyone was talking about every group, chat, workplace,
and people who don't usually get into wild theories for
the first time, I could see really buying into these
crazy conspiracy theories. Remember you and I went to Melbourne
together to do a presentation. Oh my god, yes, and

(19:25):
we were doing a presentation to different companies that we
work with, and at the end there were like any
questions I think I meant any questions about the podcast,
and so many people at different offices were like, where
do you think Kate Middleton is well, like guys, we
don't know what.

Speaker 2 (19:38):
We just saw around the car with her mum. What
are you about?

Speaker 1 (19:41):
So I'll get you to cast your mind back to
December of last year.

Speaker 2 (19:45):
That's what it feels like. It happened like months ago.

Speaker 1 (19:48):
Well it's spanned many months after that. This is the
very beginning. So Kate went to Sandringham Church for the
Christmas Morning service, which is a huge deal with the
Royal family. She was there with her husband and you
know the extended family, the kids. George was there, Charlotte
and the little one Louis. All their beautiful photos were taken,
people lining the streets to see them. After that, she

(20:08):
wasn't seen for quite a long time. Reports came out
that she was scheduled to appear at a lot of events,
but she was pulling out quite last minute, and then
towards the end of January, Kensington Palace shared an update
on her health so that she'd been hospitalized for abdominal
surgery and they never specified what the surgery is for
anything like that, so they were warning people. They said,

(20:30):
she's had surgery, she's recovering home with her family, but
she will not be seen again in a professional sense
until after Easter, which was March thirty one. This is
what we were saying at the time too. After it
came out what the true story was, a lot of
people were saying, like, apologize to her, and I was like, well,
we never said that. You know, the crazy stuff was happening,
like some of us were thinking at the time, But

(20:51):
she wasn't supposed to be in the public until March,
So why was everyone going crazy that they couldn't see her?
But I think even when she wasn't out on official duties,
you would still see photos of her, like taking the
kids to school, being out and about in the grounds,
shopping all that, you know, and all that sort of stuff.
Like she was still seen, but it's like she completely
disappeared from any view. Do you remember this time?

Speaker 2 (21:10):
Yeah, it was weird because it was so easy to
fall into the hole of the conspiracy theory, just because
the truth behind it didn't feel anywhere remotely close to
what it was actually going to be. Like, I think
everyone felt very safe in diving deep into what they
think actually happened to her, and they shouldn't have felt safe.
And I'm sure everyone felt so icky afterwards. But it

(21:33):
was weird to me because when the truth actually came
out of what happened, everyone was kind of like, oh, okay.

Speaker 1 (21:38):
All the conspiracy theories, well, some people still cling to them,
but a lot of them fell away. So I mean,
there's so many things happened, but I think on really
big catalysts. And this is also when we started reporting
on it because it became such international news. Was around
Mother's Day, the official Royal family accounts shared a photo
of Kate with her three children, and people started to
say it looked strange and different. And then we got

(22:01):
an email because we subscribed to the service that had
shared the photo, that the photo had been recalled because
it had been edited in some way and they couldn't
five it was real or not. So once the Royal
Family put out a photo of Kate and then it
was recalled for potentially being false, I think that's when
the headlines really kicked off.

Speaker 2 (22:19):
And it was like the site that they sent the
photo to, yes, right, So it was like the site
to where we were able to legally use the photo
recall it, not the actual Royal family, Yes.

Speaker 1 (22:30):
And then they had to put out a statement sort
of talking about what happened. Well, actually they didn't really
It fell to Kate to do it, and so she.

Speaker 2 (22:37):
Signed off km on like an Instagram story. So ye
only up for twenty four hours.

Speaker 1 (22:40):
Yeah, So it was very in people like, well was
that even heard? She even write that where is she?
Because at this stage a lot of people really did
believe that she was being held hostage, and that was
a real rumor that was out there. I think also
why this became such a big crazy thing is that
people then went and dug up the original photo, which
had come from a magazine photo shoot, so they could
see that they had taken this photo of her from

(23:01):
a past photo shoot and photoshopped the kids around her.
And then she put up that Instagram story and she said,
like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing.
I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the
family photograph we shared yesterday, cause I hope everyone celebrating
had a very happy Mother's Day. Oh that sucks. And
things escalated then even more because then photos were released

(23:23):
by the Sun newspaper of Catherine and William out at
like a little farm shop station area, and it all
looked lovely and happy until people started zooming and on
the photo and saying that it was in Kate Middleton
and putting photos of her of like this photo against
other photos and saying like, her hairlines different, her cheekbones
are different, she's wearing a wig. And so many people
still to this day believe that the Royal family or

(23:45):
someone connected with them hired a body double to pretend
to be Kate Middleton and walk around the farm shops
with William just sort of, you know, stop the rumors.
But it only made the rumors even more intense.

Speaker 2 (23:56):
Yeah, it was weird, but also the same breadth. Everyone
was like, why are they doing all these publicity things
and not actually like saying what's happening? And yes, And
I think that's when, after all of this, she had
to actually say what was going on? Yeah, absolutely, but
also her hand was forced at the same time. I
think her hand really was forced. And also, you know,
we were also talking about the rumors at the time.

(24:16):
You have to go back and check the tapes, but
I don't think we were ever saying that we thought
it was a body double, but people were questioning, and
I think the photo really got us thinking, like what
has happened here, because so strange to really such a
weirdly photoshopped photo. And then Catherine released a video explaining
that she had undergone the stomach surgery earlier in the
year and there was a cancer diagnosis attached to it,

(24:37):
she had been undergoing treatment with her family and that
it had been a difficult time that's why she'd been
out of the public eye, and just kind of gave
an update on where they were. And then you could
feel the whole world and everyone who was joking about it.

Speaker 1 (24:49):
Just collectively go, oh my god. And then the conversation
just shift really instantly.

Speaker 2 (24:53):
And everyone just pretended that we didn't just do all
of that.

Speaker 1 (24:56):
We were just like, oh, but even celebrities were kind
of joining, Remember like Blake Lively was posting photos. And
then she had to put up an apology saying like
this is obviously pre the whole Blake Lively pilot, and
I'm like, I'm not defeating her to what I started there. No,
But again, people still weren't angry at her at that stage,
which I guess is a good thing, because she was
just enjoying in the conversation, like we all do stupid
things and she had to put up a post and
I'm so sorry I shouldn't have like weighed in on

(25:18):
the joke. And now Kate has been seen back at
some more formal like royal events and backworking. But yeah,
just to think that it was only this year that
the whole world collectively stopped and thought the princess had
either been kidnapped, had fled and was hiding out somewhere,
or had been replaced with a body double who had
been surgically enhanced to look like her. That's a real

(25:39):
news story from twenty twenty four. And now we have
to finish on Emily's personal favorite story of the year,
my Vendetta, and I just say that I hope the
first story really puts this in perspective, because you know,
that story had an actual cancer diagnosis. This is people
getting really riled up over something they quite shouldn't because
it's just meant to be a bit funny. We're talking
about Megan Markle, the other little infamous royal to make

(26:00):
it into this show, her Brown and a girl Boss Vanscha,
which at the time of recording has not worked out.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
But hopefully maybe twenty twenty five is a year maybe
get a little taste of some raspberry jam.

Speaker 1 (26:13):
So coming off the back of her and Prince Harry's
Netflix deals and Spotify deals and a lot of that
sort of stuff going sideways. I mean, their Netflix special
was watched by millions and millions of people. Was a
huge success. His book was a huge sellout success. It's
the next lot of projects. The kids show. They tried
to do the podcast that they kind of just had
every guest in the world in the first episode. That

(26:35):
a few more episodes and the nor more podcasts. Ever,
and they parted ways with Spotify.

Speaker 2 (26:39):
Okay, can I be honest, I really love that podcast archetype. Yeah,
it was good.

Speaker 1 (26:47):
Maria carry like it was. No. You and I were
fans of that podcast. Love you megana which, yeah, bring.

Speaker 2 (26:56):
It back, stop with the jam, bring back the podcast.

Speaker 1 (26:58):
Yeah. Half the women who were on that always they
noted podcast. They said yes to you. Think of the
guests she could be getting anyway. So she launched her
lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, which has taking us now now,
which has taken us a year to learn how to
say and.

Speaker 2 (27:15):
We needn't know how to say it, and you've said
it so many times.

Speaker 1 (27:18):
We now know that American Rivera Orchard is the area
of Santa Barbara that she and Harry live in. Name it, well,
she might have to because she's run into some issues.
So the US Patent and Trademark Office advised Megan Mark
on these forms, somehow are made public that she was
not allowed to trademark the term American Riviera as it
refers to a geographical location. So you can't trademark a

(27:39):
geographical location and then block other people from using it. Yeah.
To that, I say, I do believe she's the only
person who wants to be using that. No one else
is going to do it, so please let her have it.

Speaker 2 (27:48):
I was going to say her brand manager should have
made her aware of that, but then I remember she
probably made that brand manager redundant.

Speaker 1 (27:55):
How are we getting to that? The other reason that
the Patent Office won't approve her trademark is they say
that she has messed up the letter O in American
rivera Orchard. They say the O in the logo is
and this is a quote so highly stylized that is
unrecognizable as a letter.

Speaker 2 (28:13):
Oh my god. And I just know whoever was writing,
because like this document got published because it's like public
because it's a public company. I just know that whoever
had to write these like notes was just like, fuck, yeah,
let me get in on that.

Speaker 1 (28:27):
Oh and this thing is that Meghan has been very
open about the fact from her days on the Tig,
bring that back, the Tig. She was already a lifestyle
guru before this, and yeah she could be. That's again,
Meghan could.

Speaker 2 (28:40):
Have been the next group, bring this, the first group.

Speaker 1 (28:43):
Bring the Tig back. But anyway, she loves cligraphy, so
you just know that when she was designing it, she
went to town that o to the point now that it's
unrecognizable for.

Speaker 2 (28:50):
My company, but you come from my letters.

Speaker 1 (28:52):
You're going to come for my caligraphy. Not today, sir,
not today. And if rumors are to be believed, she
doesn't really have anyone the team to help.

Speaker 2 (29:01):
Her because and why is that.

Speaker 1 (29:03):
Reports came out and they are from a tabloid called Closer,
So you know, we take that with a grain of salt.
That she had to delay her lifestyle brand launching and
like going into full business, which was supposed to earlier
this year, because it had spiraled into disarray. Those are
their words. And according to this report by Closer, twenty
members of staff had quit in the lead up to it,

(29:23):
which they said was unprecedented even for a startup. The
caveat of that is that it did come out later
that those start like twenty people didn't quit all on
one day. It was over like a year long period
of time. So make of that what you will.

Speaker 2 (29:35):
That's I know, I would have been one of those twenty.
I've been like, girl, you have me over here channing
this jam from nights on end and you sell only
five bottles. Also, where's my money? You're giving them out
for free to people I don't even know. Well, we'll
get to the jam because that's Emily's favorite things.

Speaker 1 (29:51):
She can't wait. So as part of the launch of
American rivera orchard still to be trademarked now American Now,
Megan Michael said that she was going to release a
line of jam. Yes, and where as the jam. So
what happened was she sent out fifth this is and this.

Speaker 3 (30:08):
Is a very eighty four years at the beginning towards
in the first few months of the year, she sent
out fifty pots of the American Riviera Orchard Preserve and
a bunch of two celebrities.

Speaker 2 (30:21):
Of course, how much do you think they could make
if they sold the plus so much?

Speaker 1 (30:25):
If you put that bad boy in eBay, just put
it on TikTok and be like, it's like when people
sell like jars of air, but this would be a
jar of jam. So we'ld get so much.

Speaker 2 (30:31):
We should see if we pretend we could do it,
and then see how much money we make.

Speaker 1 (30:35):
So a bunch of celebrities started posting they had received
the jam from Megan Markle, including Chris Jenner, Tracy Ellis Ross,
and Mindy kayaling out. So each one said one of fifteen,
one of this, one of that, like of like which
batch it was. The Kadashian's got number thirteen if you
care about that.

Speaker 2 (30:52):
Wait, the whole family got one jar of jam.

Speaker 1 (30:55):
I think it went to Chris Oh okay, yes, but
the head of the family a spoonful. This is my
favorite part is like they said, fifty people receive the jam,
but not everyone posted about it. The New York Post
has speculated that Oprah Winfrey and de Generous and Serena
Williams will all gifted the jam as well, but declined
to post.

Speaker 2 (31:14):
Oh so was part of the agreement was to post
the job.

Speaker 1 (31:18):
I don't think there was an agreement anything like that.
I think she went to launch it and she thought
what a great way to send out It was like
we get pr packages when brands are launching things and
they send you a little gift. They send you the
product and like usually like in a beautiful little box
or something like that, and they want you to take
a photo and put it on Instagram and say, look
at those amazing things that other people go and buy it.

Speaker 2 (31:36):
So she would die if Mindy Cayling posted that and
was like hashtag pr.

Speaker 1 (31:41):
G, hashtag gifted, gifted. So she posted the jam and
all of a sudden people were just like, oh, it
doesn't look very nice. What's wrong with the label? Who
else did she give them to? It was very artissian
Artissian gem so I mean, I'm sure it would taste nice.
We'll never know because it's still not for sale so
we can't buy it. And then things took a turn.

Speaker 2 (32:02):
I think I know what you're about to say, because.

Speaker 1 (32:04):
The Buckingham Palace Shop official Instagram posted.

Speaker 2 (32:08):
A photo your dandy dog, you know, King Charles.

Speaker 1 (32:10):
There, He's like, who's got the Instagram password, let me
post this, posted a photo saying that they had their
own strawberry preserve for sale and they have been selling
it for many years. Everyone should buy that instead. They
didn't mention Megan Markle at all, but it was very
clear that the jam wars had kicked off.

Speaker 2 (32:26):
It was like the day after they were like, hey,
we also have jam and guess what, you can.

Speaker 1 (32:31):
Buy our one exactly, it's right here. I think they
didn't actually say that, but they're like, you can buy
it right here. It's readily available. And so then this
whole thing started of the Royal jam Wars. It was
Megan versu the Royal family, but this time over jam
and guess what, we're still kind at the time of recording,
we do know she's also making dog biscuits. Now, oh yes,
that's true, but at the time of recording American rivera Orchard,

(32:52):
it's still not up and running. I hope it is.
I hope twenty twenty five is her year, and I
hope that that's when we can buy some jam, but
not yet.

Speaker 2 (32:59):
Thank you so much for listening to the spill today.
