Speaker 1 (00:11):
So you're listening to a Muma Mia podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Mamma Mia acknowledges the traditional owners of land and borders
that this podcast is recorded on from Mamma Mia. Welcome
to the Spill, your daily pop culture fix. I'm Laura
Brednick and I'm the orange couch with me today. If like,
just do a drum roll or something that.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
The DUT's me, I'm back. It's Kelly McCarroll.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Looking like you're going to Antarctica. It's a very cold.
It's just not it's just not. It is. It is brisk.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
Okay, I've got thick socks on and a nice trench.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
I know Kelly walked in here with this sexy long
trench on. I thought she was going to do a
bit of a reveal.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
I have like a sad.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
Oh. We'll just picture that, guys as we're doing today's episode.
So coming up on the show today, we have to
close the loop out on the Snow White story. It
has become one of the most controversial movie releases in history.
And that's not even me being dramatic. People's family members
have got involved other movies who've just been stopped dead
in their tracks. We're going to get into that because
it is just all encompassing situation. Plus, I don't know
(01:20):
if anyone knows this, but the White Letters finale was
last night, was very under the radar, no one talked
about it. So we're going to get into that because
we have I think, some very different thoughts, some very
extreme thoughts. So that's gonna be right at the end.
There's gonna be a few little spoilers. That's well, we're
doing it right at the end, guy, So you can
listen to the first two segments.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
Don't get cranky in the exactly those spoilers.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
No, no, it'll be at and we will once again
tell you right before to turn off now exactly.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
So if you haven't watched the finale, go watch it
now and then come back. Obviously, still listen to our
chat because it's going to be amazing. But it's at
the end. Spoiler alert.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
But first, Laura had quite an interesting reaction with a
special little Lossie heartthrobb last night.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Please explain what on earth happens? Yes, I have a
new enemy. His name is Jacob Alordie. He joins my
long list of celebrity enemies who don't know why I exist.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
Oh no, what happened.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Well, so I was going to the premiere of his
new TV show, The Narrow Road to the Deep North,
which is coming out next week on Prime Video. And look,
some of this is my fault because I was running
a bit late. I'm a busy gowlock. I mean, I
was working. Here's the thing. When you see the pictures
from all of these premieres, you see all like the
proper celebrities and the influencers, and they're kind of gliding
(02:28):
down these red carpets on.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
The very entire day was in premna. I go to
these events, not actually work, and then go to the eight.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Hundred percent and like, people had ball gowns on last
Even Jacob Alordi even complimented someone on their ballgown as
he walked out, Like I think he was like, holy shit,
people are really dressed up for this. I on their
looks and not rutually. Yeah, he was looking kind of chill.
He's a dramatic actor. Whereas I'm rushing to these things,
I'm usually running out of work. I've got like my laptop,
of my bags. I need to work when I get home,
(02:59):
so no pretty bags. I'm like wearing a flat wa
have a low heel on. Last night, I'm like in
the car on the way there, in the back of
an uber franchy going through my bag. I don't have
any makeup to fix my face. Last night, I got
like the end of you know, like the of a lipstick,
like the little nubby Donna throw out. I put that
on my lips and on my cheeks, trying to like
and then I was like blotting it with the back
of my hand. I looked really hot. Is what I'm
trying to say.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
You really did that is basically you beauty hack right there?
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Yeah, exactly. So that I'm running to this event and
I get to the end of the red carpet and
I showed them my pass. I'm like, okay, I've made it.
I'm going to make it inside in time. And then
all of a sudden, this big meati security guard like
lashes his arm out in front of me and he's like, man,
you have to stay there, and I'm like what, I'm like,
I'm sorry, I am I about to be arrested, Like
what's happening. I'm like, so, I know I'm late, but
this seems like an extreme reaction, and it was. It
(03:42):
just don't let me in there. Yeah. I was like,
I just want to see the show, it's my job.
And then this car pulls up right next to me,
so it's droven through the entertainment corterage, come to the
end of the red carpet and the door opens, and
when I tell you, the screams because there was this
big red carpet leading up to the event that either
side packed with fans, mostly young women. The deafening screams
(04:04):
more like a squeal. It was, Yeah, it broke the
sound barrier. I still I don't have hearing in this
ear anymore. It's gone forever. And then Jacob Elati excellent
links out of the car head down. He looks terrified,
and to be fair, in that moment, he should have
looked terrified like everyone would be.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
He hasn't been famous for long enough at that level.
Yeah know how to cope with Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Also, he's been such a big staff for so long,
and he's had so many projects. But I feel like
Euphoria hasn't had like a big red carpet for a while.
I know he goes to award shows and stuff, but
maybe he wasn't expecting it. I don't know. It was crazy.
And then I had to slink down the red carpet
behind him with a security guard like hold me back
so I couldn't go inside. And I know, this sounds
like a DC looks like you were part of the Andrea.
I looked like I was stalking him down the red
(04:46):
carpet and I'm like, sir, I cannot like, I'm sure
he's lovely. I've actually have an interviewed him. I don't know,
but I was like, I just want to get inside
and like get a wine, two wines before I go
into the screen and get my seat. Get off my feet,
That's all I want from this night. Get off my
low heel. Yeah, exactly, my low heel. And I had
to like wait and then be like escorted around Jacob LORDI. So,
I'm sure if you see any of the photos from
last night, I put a creeping in the background. I'm
(05:08):
creeping in the background, and all the pictures of me
in the background of him, I look so angry. I'm
like glaring in the background because I'm like, I just
want to get past this man, and I'm having to
be like corral by the security who I think, even
though I was invited thought I was a crazy fan
and I was trying to get at him. Were you
wearing a landed yes or no? No?
Speaker 1 (05:26):
Yeah, well that's where you went wrong.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
You're a lanyard. They weren't lanyards, they were little black
ribbons and it was very dark. So I'm just saying
I did look like a stalker at one stage. That's
too easy.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
Imagine if you just had a ribbon in your hair
then you put around your wrist.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
I know exactly, and the security guy were pushing people back.
And the crazy thing is, I've had some near death
experiences at that very.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Vague This is where Laura loves stout aling no mayo.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
No, I'm no, I'm not. And I remember the time
I nearly died. It was at the thor Ragnarok premiere.
So it was Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo were on
the red car but along with some other Marvel stars.
Were you. I'm behind them? Not no, not on purpose.
So again I'm making my way down the road car
but and there's these massive, big barriers on each side,
and they're like people are heaving against them because this
(06:13):
is ten times bigger than last night. This is a
level premiere like you can't even see the end of
the crowd, and people are pushing against the barriers. And
then I felt someone kind of push up against me
because it was really on the red carpet, like it
was very intense and people taking photos and I'm trying
to talk to people and stuff, and I could feel
this man like pushing against my like we're back to
back for ages, and I was like, oh my god,
like can this guy move and get out of my space?
(06:34):
And I turned around and it's Chris Hem's word because
he's being pushed back. I know we had our backs
together for a long time, but we're the same height,
so maybe maybe thought I was another guy I don't
know who was the short king, and that just is
you know exactly. I was like, we're just literally eye level.
And then all of a sudden, people recognize that Chris
(06:54):
Hems was there because his security guard's like the ocean's
parted and the barriers started breaking down. I could hear
them creaking, and they're having to like physically push people
back because they had broken over the barriers and they
were trying to get in, and they would have one
hundred percent and my name would even made the headlines.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
I mean, if local entertainment reporter was trampled to death,
I think it would have.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
They would have been like tall podcast women trampled to death,
Chris Hemsworth, crims ems Worth. Yeah, No, he wouldn't. He
would have let me die. He would have let me
die for sure, and I wouldn't have blamed him because
it was really intense. And years later he would have
done a big tell all and they would have forgotten
I'd died. Anyways, because I spent a lot of time
staying behind Jacob Laudie as he went down the carpet.
I was watching how he interacted with fans, and it
was quite it was he terrified of them, No, he
(07:40):
actually seemed quite fine. He was kind of being nice
to them, which I don't know why. I'm shocked by that.
The people that made him famous. No, but so many
people don't stop. Like I've spent so much time, you know,
walking on those red carpets along with these people, and
just seeing these fans who have lined her for hours
and hours an hours scream the name of their favorite actor.
And it's not always their faults. Sometimes they can't stop.
(08:01):
But I saw him and again I was standing behind
him because I wasn't allowed to move, and I did
tweeting videos, which I know it looked so embarrassing, but
I just wanted to prove to people that this man
had the e work me from going into.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
And weren't adding the mayo that you actually were stuck
behind you.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
I was stuck behind him. So I watched him. He
went over to these girls who are like losing their minds,
which I get, like, it's nothing.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Who it's weird.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
No, But they're like teens. I think maybe meeting adults
it's weird.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Yeah, not me meeting Tam and Sirsock when I was
thirteen and bursting into tears.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
Yeah, that's the level of thing. And so I watched
him walk over to these girls and they giving him
a pen, which I thought was very cute and old school,
to sign some stuff and he rests. I think it
was a book or so, I don't know what it was.
Maybe it was the book that's wiped me. I'm like,
they're so weird.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
Then you see me on the news like just flashing
my tits trying to get someone to sorry.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
Next time I'll go to a recup. You have to
come and do that I probably would. And he took
the pen out of this young girl's hand, pulled the
lid off in his mouth, held the pen lid in
his mouth. But she's never washing that, yeah, and signed
everything and then took photos with the pen lid still
behind his teeth, and then he kind of put it
back on the pen and gave it back to her.
That's the video. And then he went along the line
(09:11):
doing that.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
Ah, So how you really stuck behind him?
Speaker 2 (09:14):
I really was. Finally they let me and I was
able to like rush past him, and I went straight
inside and had down two glasses, went straight to that's
where you can always find me.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Out to the popcorn. Laura goes straight to the wine.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
Yeah, I can do without popcorn. And then when he
got inside, I don't know if he's just shy or
he's very like difficult and sullen. He did a lot
of press. I'll give him that, but he, you know,
had his head down the whole time, and I'm.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
Going to give him the benefit of the downstairs shy.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
Let's go with that. And also I would just love
to think that he's shy, and so like once you
find out a celebrity is like difficult and awful, which
in my experience a lot of them are. It does
ruin things like you want to magic fantasy. And then
we went into the theater sat down. I was like
wheeling in the front row. I don't know. I was
like it felt like I was in the war TV
show we were watching. And then he came in with
like his head down, like slinking in. He's wearing like
(10:03):
almost like a tracksuit, whereas like the girls had like
gowns on and things, and like the girls were in
the show with him.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
Alia to stop. He's like, why did my publicist not
pass on the memo? Yeah that this was quite maybe
he was.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
Meant to be. He's also chewing gum, which he must have.
We don't want bad breath, but he didn't have it
all down the red carpet, so he must have popped gum.
It's because the publiss said, bro your breath stinks. He
is setting up in front of the audience in a
massive theater, hundreds of seeds, like it's like Adrian Brody
throwing out his gum as he gets on stage to
get an oscar, like rethink the gum, you know what
(10:33):
I mean? Like he came off very well last night
overall people were losing their minds. They loved him, like
he came in with the gum. Maybe they just thought
it made him look very kind of suave.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
Was he also a short king compared to you or.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
Jacob A LORDI No, he's a lot taller than me.
I never looked up to anyone. I was so shocked,
and I haven't as previously established. I was wearing a
low heel and I'm already very tall, and he was
still taller than me.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
But she's the same heart as Chris Hams.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Yeah, which means Jacob Elordi is taller than both, the
opposite of a short I love. That's my takeaway from this.
So yeah, he was very nervous giving answers. It's so
funny when you see like an old school movie style,
Like I remember going to the premiere of Elvis and
Tom Hanks came out and he ran out onto the
stage and he was getting the audience to a.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
Scene charisma, and yeah, he was like he was stage present.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
The whole audience was like on their feet for this man.
And then Austin Butler like SLINKs out with his head down.
He's like yeah, pretty much. And I got that from
Jacob e Lordie. This next crop of stars are very
like head down, don't speak. I'm an actor, but I'm
an all yeah. But then people love them for it,
so I don't know. So that was my night. So
Jacob of Lordie and I we started out as enemies,
(11:37):
we got back on track. We became friends once I
got inside, and then I really liked the show. And
he doesn't know I.
Speaker 3 (11:42):
Exist, and he's like, he just knows you as the
strange woman that scuttled behind him.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
I actually haven't gone and looked at any of the
premiere photos.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
I really hope that you that you end up in memes,
you know how.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
Yeah got the oscars. That water bottle girl, that's me.
You are the water bottle girl, angry faced girl in the background.
And with the show The Narrow Rode to the Deep North,
it's out on Prime video next week. We will do
an actual like I will do my actual job and
do a proper review on the show next week when
it comes out, because it is great. But that was
a little recap of last night.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
Loved that.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
So a few weeks ago we talked about the new
live adaptation of Disney Snow White. When it came into theaters,
we did a whole episode on all the drama around it,
and also a review because unlike many people, I actually
saw the movie before I shared my thoughts, oh my gosh,
fancy that. Well not many people did no ve that
in the show notes, so you can go back into it.
But basically Disney Snow White was as all of their
(12:36):
other live action Disney adaptations have been really premed to,
like take over the box office, huge fanfare around it.
They never do the falling in love they do to
an extent, and also like move faster. The last one
they made did really well, made a lot of money.
The Little Mermaid did quite well, beuting the Beasts like
knocked it out of the park. That's why they keep
making them, is like one they have to hold onto
(12:56):
their IP so you have to keep using the properties
otherwise you can lose them. And then the other reason
is that like it's you know, a title that has
this name recognition with the people who are most nostalgic,
elder millennials who drag themselves all their children along to
see them movie that made them cry in their childhood.
So it's actually a good money making scheme, but things
really fell apart for snow White, which we went through.
(13:17):
And how much are you across this?
Speaker 1 (13:19):
I know absolutely nothing, okay, the law of snow White.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
Or like obviously, I just know the story, the original story. Yeah, okay,
well even Apple, there's some dwarves. Yeah, wait no, no,
we are allowed to did.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
You just love like watching my face go through that?
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Wait? Wait? Wait five, I'm allowed to see. Actually, that's
interesting because that was a big thing. So when it
came out, like there's a bit of backlash over Rachel
Zegler being cast as snow white because she's of Latina descent.
People like her skin's not white. There's a few parts
of this movie. I don't think I should speak on
that when I feel very confident speaking on being like
it's fine to cast her like. She was one of
the best parts of the movie, to be honest, she
(13:55):
was great, and I think the color of her skin
shouldn't mean that she can't have a particular role.
Speaker 3 (13:59):
Yeah, how many people in history have been cast it
didn't look like what the book or the original book
description said that they did.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
Exactly, and they explain in a live action adaptation why
her skin is that you know, they actually say, like,
it's nothing to do with color of her skin. It's
that she was born in a snowstorm and it gave
her like this extra strength to overcome things. So that's fine.
And then it came out that they were going to
not use actors with dwarf ism and so they were
going to see gi them and so a lot of actors, well,
first of all, some actors were upset that they were
(14:27):
even making snow White in general, because the idea of
using dwarf actors could also be seen as damaging. When
then actors were also upset that they're like, hey, this
is the role we could have played of an industry
that shuts us out and instead of giving us the
leads in this big action Disney movie, your cgiing characters
and we've lost work. So that all happened. And then
Rachel Zegler gave a few interviews. Well, she gave many
(14:48):
good interviews. I don't mean to be like a complete
Rachel Zeglar apologist, but I just think that people have
run away with this story. She gave mostly very positive interviews,
but one very viral interview where she talked about the
fact that the original is quite damaging, and that the
Prince stalks her and she said, weird, weird, We're not
going to do that, and people hated her for that.
She got so many death threats and people like, oh,
(15:08):
boycott the because she's the original st he was a
bit strang.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
Oh, for goodness sake, people have too much time exactly.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
It's quite intense. And then a lot of rumors came out,
which they've kind of improven, that she and Galagadote, who
plays the evil Queen, both didn't get along on set.
And then also Rachel Zegler has posted a lot of
in support of Palestine, and then galagherdot is of Israeli
descent and also served in the Raeli military for two
years and spoke Hebrew at her Hollywood Walk of Fame,
(15:35):
and there was all these protesters, and so there was
a lot of back and forth over whether that had
had any issue with it when Rachel.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
Zeven two women don't actually like to work with each
other that much.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
Well exactly, and like they never really spoke about it.
They posed on the Red carpet together. But the thing
is a movie like this, you normally do like so
much joint Yeah, press you do all this stuff together.
They didn't do anything like that. In fact, Disney cut
all the press and kept it very kind of in house,
just like Rachel Zegler singing in front of a castle. Basically,
that was it. And then Rachel Zegler posted a whole
bunch of photos on his Instagram, is like a tribute
(16:05):
to the movie and the friends she made along the
way and all this sort of stuff. And there were
so many angry comments. It's like, you left Galgadote out,
How dare you do that? All this sort of stuff.
And then Rachel actually replied to one of the comments
before she had to turn them off because people were
just getting so intense and nasty, which is not really
the best excuse, but what she said was that Gal
Gadot wasn't actually on set very long because she had
(16:26):
to go and film another movie. So I don't know
about that.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
But I also just once again, who cares. Yeah, well,
if you don't get along that well with people that
you work with. Laura and I famously, between us, we're
not friends. When we walked together for the first because
we were both terrified of each other.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
Transpired.
Speaker 1 (16:44):
I don't transpired, I don't know how.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
Long this one and my point of view, this didn't
go on that long bit. The first time Kelly and
I like really met, we got into the lift of
the together. Do you remember this. I was like, it's Laura.
Oh my god, I thought that too. So we got
in the lift together at the old building and I
looked at you and I'm like, oh my god, it's
Kelly mccarery.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
And I looked at her and went, oh my goodness,
that's Laura Brodney cos.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
And neither of us said anything. So for months months
we thought the other one didn't like each other.
Speaker 3 (17:11):
But we were simply both two in alle, which is
actually really love.
Speaker 2 (17:14):
It's actually really cute of us. I don't care what's
happening here.
Speaker 3 (17:17):
Yeah, no, no, but like you don't have to like
everyone that you work with.
Speaker 2 (17:22):
It's okay.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
Yeah, it's these thirteen year olds. This is why thirteen
year old should not have social media. They're jumping on,
they're commenting nonsense. Then they're turning up and trampling Laura
Brodnick at the red carpet.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
Yeah exactly. But also they kind of say there's a
lot of old white men who have also played a
huge part of Yes, they're the ones who are running
the op airs. They're the ones who are doing the
big news bulletins on those different channels where they just
rag on women and stuff. They're the ones who are
going like, go work, go broke. That's how Disney lost
its money, all this sort of stuff, because it did
perform really badly at the box office, and one of
(17:51):
the big trending things is people buying like one ticket
to go into snow White, walking into like film the
empty theaters and stuff. So it's become a huge thing.
To the point. Now, now this is unverified, but this
is the big story that's going around, and it was
reported by a variety who's like one of the biggest
Hollywood trade publications, and so they're a publication or if
they say, like sources say, it's like they're talking to
(18:12):
the head of a studio. They're talking into like a
page six kind of thing. So they have said that
Disney has decided to put the live action version of Tangled,
one of my favorite Disney movies. You've seen Tangled? Oh
my god, Okay, obviously, Zachary Levi.
Speaker 1 (18:25):
Yes again, I disappoint Oh so good.
Speaker 2 (18:28):
Oh my god, Lenny will love this. Just give him
like a year or so. Okay, No, it's great, so
you'll love it. Don't even worry about children. I just
watch the Bummers. I went with adults to see this movie.
Why are you.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
Luke who goes to see Disney movies by himself sometimes
and I'll go, I'm like, oh, sweetheart, I think that
it's a little bit worrying that you are a middle
aged man going to the cinema by yourself to see movies.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
There are children there. Why do you think that looks okay,
that does look creepy. This is where you just have
to go with him. I think that's how be saying this.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
Is any Surely that's why I you.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
That's why you have a child, right, so you can
take them to stuff. No, but these movies have like
incredible composers and things. Anyway, So Tangled was about to
be made. It was an active development, which means like
all the wheels were turning, script was happening. They had
the same director from the Greatest Showman who was going
to direct, The person who wrote thaor Love and Thunder
had written the script like it was all up to
be this huge thing, and that apparently snow White has
(19:23):
been so disastrous that they've had to put that on
Iyce Lelo and Stitch is still coming out because that's
like being filmed. But it has put like all of
these live action movies in jeopardy. I think they'll still
make them. And then one other little tidbit is that
the producer of snow White's son has gotten involved. Do
you know who Ben Platt is? Okay, he's an incredible
(19:44):
Broadway star Dear Evan Hans, and he's also a TV
and movie star. His father, well, he was like in
the film adaptation of Dear Evan Hans, and he's also
in Ryan Murphy's a politician, but he's obviously Ben Platt
voice of an Angel. So his family are all in
the business. And his father, Mark Platt, is one of
the produced members from My Life. Oh listen to his voice,
(20:05):
You'll be carried to Heaven. So his father, Mark Platt
is one of the producers of snow White, and his son,
Jonah Platt, is a podcast host. So Jonah's dad is
the producer of snow White. He's keeping all the puzzle
pieces in. Someone comment on his Instagram post about how
badly the movie had done, and he said, you really
want to do this and then he said, yeah, My dad,
the producer of enormous piece of Disney IP with hundreds
(20:27):
of millions of dollars on the line, had to leave
his family and fly across the country to reprimand his
twenty year old employee, Rachel Zegler, for dragging her personal
politics into the middle of promoting the movie for which
she signed a multimillion dollar contract to get paid and
do publicity for. So he came out and confirmed the
rumor because while production was going on, Rachel Zegler would
(20:50):
like tweet out free Palestine, and she was really passionate
about that, and she's like very actively involved in speaking
up about things she believes in, and.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
So why would they not be allowed to do that?
Speaker 2 (20:59):
Though, oh, well, just because you know, there's a lot
of discourse in that area, and like people are on
different sides and it's a whole situation, and like she
is allowed, she should be allowed to she should be
allowed to do that. You're right, So, but this kind
of uproar and then people also thought she was taking
a stab at Gallicadot, even though obviously the situation is
much bigger than these two bigga two women in Hollywood,
and so there was always a rumor that a Disney
(21:20):
executive had flown to her home and asked her to
take it down, and she said no, and that started everything.
And then his son pretty much just because he's deleted
it now but obviously not before everyone screenshot it, screenshot it.
So now Rachel Zegler has just taken the fall for
this whole situation. It's very sad that is. So said
she's twenty You said, yeah, she's twenty one. Now, well,
the thing is like just to kind of finish this.
(21:41):
At the end of the day, these are all people
dealing in like multi billion dollar movie industry, So I
don't feel that sort of sad for them, Like obviously
there's a lot of people worse off, but I just
think it's interesting how this whole thing has happened. So
many people are involved, and at the end of the day,
as we kind of close out this Snow White chapter,
all the hate has fallen on Rachel Zegler.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
Okay, just to heads up, we are about to have
a very quick little debrief on the White Lotos finale
that aired yesterday. So a reminder if you are yet
to watch it.
Speaker 3 (22:10):
Please bow out of the episode now because there will
be some spoilers. You can come back later once you've
watched the episode. The full deep dive into White Loadus
season three will be on Friday. But Laura, what did
you think of the finale?
Speaker 2 (22:23):
I didn't find it as unsatisfying as some people did.
I know some people were just like there's so many
plot holes, there's this and that. But I think of
like what Mike White, who's the creator of the show,
has said coming into this that it was meant to
be a slow burn. Basically, he said, like I like
to edge people, and if you're in my bed, I'm
gonna edge you. And if you don't want to be here,
then get the hell out. What's edging mean? It means
(22:45):
like kind of like bringing someone almost to climax but
not actually getting there. That's awful. In Like, he's like,
it's like the teasing build up. That's what he's here for.
He's not here for like the payoff.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
Oh so okay, So the point is to leave the
finale Lea feeling very unsatisfied, well not.
Speaker 2 (23:00):
Unsatisfied, but he's like, it's about the build up and
the journey not for this like big kind of payoff
at the end, like you have to do a bit
of the payoff yourself.
Speaker 3 (23:07):
Yes, and I understand that, but I still feel that
the Internet are partially I don't know their reactions have
been mixed, but I would definitely say it more on
the side.
Speaker 2 (23:20):
Because you were kind of almost in and out this season. Also,
you hadn't watched last season, so there was a lot
of build up for this.
Speaker 1 (23:26):
I think that people have a point.
Speaker 3 (23:27):
I think there are way too many unresolved plot holes
and that it was pretty anticlimactic towards the end. I
personally found there are just way too many plot holes,
particularly with Victoria. And you were saying earlier this morning
that apparently they had to cut the final episode down.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
Yes, very much, they should have. Yeah, I almost I
was saying that to someone today. I was like, I
almost think that we maybe should have just had a
two and a half hour finale. People to have watched it.
It broke so many The finale broke so many streaming
records for Max and HBO. It's you know, shattered last
year's record, so people would tune in. But I also
understand Mike White, you know, like the whole idea of
(24:05):
being a creator is like, you know, the whole thing.
You've got to kill your darlings, You've got to kill
off the bits that you love, and so like what
was filmed to.
Speaker 3 (24:11):
Be so smart with so many different points and so
the use of music and the use of signs and simples,
then to have so many plot holes just seems quite
lazy to me.
Speaker 2 (24:22):
Well, yeah, it did feel a little disjointed, and I
would love to see the editor's cut. I don't think
anything in that finale of like who Died or anything
like that.
Speaker 1 (24:29):
Oh no, it's not that. It was more like the Yeah, the.
Speaker 2 (24:31):
Character build up of so like, Piper was meant to
lose her virginity in the last episode. That was meant
to be this whole thing that she came back from
the monastery.
Speaker 1 (24:39):
Oh thank god they left that out because it probably
would have been with the brother.
Speaker 2 (24:43):
Well it was, no, it wasn't the brother. It was
going to be with Zion Blinda's so she is like
she comes back with this very change mentality, and she
was meant to go into like the dining room season on.
They have like a meet cute, then they have sex,
and that's why she's wearing different outfits and acting differently
later on, and so it feels a bit abrupt from
a viewpoint of view, like, oh, she's a whole different person.
Speaker 1 (25:03):
No, I actually thought that that made sense fun.
Speaker 2 (25:05):
Oh okay, so there's little bits like that. There was
meant to be more in the friendship group. I love that.
Speaker 3 (25:09):
Yeah, that was I loved because this is another thing
we were speaking about this morning. But like Laura and
I the entire season both actually thought that it was
a very accurate representation of female and everyone that was
going like, oh, it's so toxic, they're awful.
Speaker 1 (25:23):
I was like, my female friendshipships really tough.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
Because this is really accurate. I have been thinking that
I am a monster the last couple of weeks because
all I'm hearing is like, these women toxic as hell,
not a time of people.
Speaker 1 (25:35):
Well, they are in some ways just silent women.
Speaker 2 (25:37):
Yeah, I'm sitting quite in the corner and being like,
I don't think they're that bad. No, I think they're actually.
Speaker 3 (25:41):
Quite Literally said to my girlfriends a couple of weeks
ago dinner, I go because we're talking about how normal
gossiping is, and.
Speaker 1 (25:49):
I was like, I'll give you guys, enough amos. Sometimes
just let me know if I'm ever being too boring.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
I think this is something I was saying with my
close friends the other day, is like, sometimes we can
point things out to each other, Like I'll say to
a friend like, oh, this friend did this and this
and that, But I wouldn't say that to anyone outside
of our circle because in our circle we're all even
we know each other. But it's also the things that
you would say to that person. You would say, but
you can't defame someone who's in your circle because you
all know each other, whereas I would be telling you
(26:14):
one of my friends that you don't know, you're only
getting my side of the story. Do you know what
I mean? Yeah, exactly. The rules are intricate, guys.
Speaker 3 (26:21):
The rules of female friendships are very like that's an
entire episode within itself. I thought that that whole storyline,
in the way that they tied it up. I'm really
glad that that's how he tied it up, and he
didn't tied up with like them falling out or anything.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
Because I just thought it was so perfectly accurate. Yeah, well,
everyone thought like this wasn't just a wild fan theory.
It was a real theory. Everyone thought that their three
women were going to have a shootout at the end,
that's what's going to happen. And I was like, that
would have just been wildly out of character.
Speaker 3 (26:47):
While they out of character and just way too dramatic.
We're not that dramatic. We have fights, we push each other.
Speaker 2 (26:53):
In the pool. That's probably the most dramatic. Yea, exactly,
And I thought, like, stupid bitch that And I thought
coming together at like the end of a girl's trip
when you've had fights but also had good times and
then you come back together and everything's fine, Like Mike
White weirdly gets female friendship, like so.
Speaker 3 (27:07):
Well, he gets female friendships more than people on TikTok
don't have that place to female friendships get female friendships.
Because that was so accurate that you could be screaming
down each other's throat, but then at the end of
the day, like I adore you more than anyone, and
I'll always be here for you.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
Yeah, and your history, like having a long history with
someone will override any kind of bad behavior exactly, just
maybe not good or bad, but it's realistic. What else
did you like or not.
Speaker 3 (27:29):
Like Okay, So I found the whole I'm your father twist.
It was just so obvious and really lazy. I found
I just like, you know, look at my father. It's
a tale as old at time. It's boring, seriously, Like,
I just feel like that could have just been done
so differently.
Speaker 1 (27:43):
And why did that weedy little predator come back to life?
Speaker 2 (27:46):
No? Yeah, so Lachlan the youngest son who made his
drink in the dirty blender. Have you seen those articles
and memes at Shade being like, sorry, if you use
a dirty blender off the counter, that's you to die.
But probably that's a discussed You could have just died
from bacteria.
Speaker 1 (28:01):
Literally E col I can kill it even if there.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
Wasn't a poisonous fruit in there. Yeah, I know that.
People like, I'm so glad Lachland and died. No little
he has the most character development out. So the Ratliff
sibling is like the first shot of them we see
on the boat and it's like Saxon's like just sitting
up looking all like he's in charge, Piper's in the
middle looking all like pure, and Lachlan's looking all nervous.
And the last shot we see of them is Saxon
(28:25):
head down reading a book, Piper like looking very kind
of resolved and like she's leaning in smart yeah, leaning
into a rich girl narrative. And then Lachlan's just kind
of sitting back like he's kind. He's come out as
like the top sibling. Weirdly, so they all had like
different character arcs.
Speaker 1 (28:40):
I loved Saxon's ark like, I loved his development.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
I always felt sorry for him.
Speaker 3 (28:44):
I don't know why, because he was prayed upon by
his predis.
Speaker 2 (28:49):
I know, yeah, I don't know if that incest storyline,
like it was obviously interesting, but I felt like maybe
didn't even have a point anything felt at the end
it was there for shock value. Not only it didn't
like change anything in their family except that it got
Lachlan to say that he's a people pleaser in his family,
a narcissist. But I feel like that needed.
Speaker 3 (29:06):
You know what, I know, lots of people pleases, none
of them are jacking off their brother.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
Yeah, but you know, of well that's true. But also
I felt like what you're saying with the Victoria arc
with Parker Posi, who was incredible in the role. But
I did feel like I know bits of her scenes
got cut, but I think just maybe that she was
overwritten in some way because they were really building up
this idea that she she was involved, if she had something,
and like, what was that whole scene with her and Kate?
(29:30):
Was that just to show that she doesn't you know
the scene that day she's.
Speaker 1 (29:32):
A little bit rude but not really rude.
Speaker 2 (29:34):
Yeah, it made no sense.
Speaker 1 (29:35):
And why was she speaking in Taie at the start
as well? Like why do you know Thay?
Speaker 3 (29:40):
Yeah, there were all of these like little signs that
she knew more than she was letting on. Yeah, and anyway,
we can go into more of that on the Friday
episode because there are just there are so many things that.
Speaker 2 (29:51):
Are so very overall. You know, this is a great show.
Speaker 1 (29:54):
It was a great finale.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
Yes, yes, exactly. And also again so many people getting
frustrated with spoilers and things. But I think also that's
the price we pay for having this show that becomes
part of our lives and like going back into this monoculture.
Speaker 1 (30:07):
Of just don't go on social watch the.
Speaker 2 (30:08):
Same show on the same night. That's it.
Speaker 3 (30:11):
It's part of it good, and it's part of why
we enjoy it so much because part of it is
watching it, and part of it is dissecting it with
exactly So if you don't want spoilers, stay of social
media until you've watched It's pretty simple.
Speaker 2 (30:23):
