Speaker 1 (00:11):
You're listening to a Muma Mia podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Mamma Mia acknowledges the traditional owners of land and borders
that this podcast is recorded on from Mamma Mia. Welcome

Brodney and I'm m Vernum and today we have a
special guest, and.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
I'm Taylor Strano, host of The Quickie. Hey, guys, I
love when we have these pod crossovers.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
I said this before, but I do feel like we're
in the Avengers when this happened.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
So Taylor, you thought we were enemies when they were
coming together?
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Or will we be enemies? Who knows what will happen
by the end of this episode. Well, Taylor is here
because she has actually seen one of the biggest new
releases this week that you and I haven't, So she's
here to tell us about that.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
She's here to do our job.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
She's here to do our job for us and also
has a very big surprise which will reveal at the
end of the episode. So stick around.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
Will you look like you actually didn't know that?
Speaker 3 (01:06):
I didn't know before, but now I think I do.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
Okay, good find out together exactly We'll find out together
so we can watch is where we talk about the
best new TV shows and movies that have come out
this week. So I'm going to jump in because I
have been waiting months and months and months to talk
about this movie. I saw it ages ago at the
Sydney Film Festival and I have been thinking about it
ever since. And it is finally in cinemas in Australia
and it's called The Ballad of Wallace Island. You made it, okay?
(01:34):
Is there not like a harbor? It's sort of nature's harbor?
One going to Wallace Island?
Speaker 1 (01:37):
No, no, no, you know it isn't the great McGuire
coming all the way out there without your roadies.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Where will the audience do?
Speaker 3 (01:46):
We said to be one hundred, I said less than
one hundred?
Speaker 4 (01:49):
Is it just you?
Speaker 5 (01:50):
Yeah? Right, I'm literally playing one guy. I'm going to
take out restraining in order to.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
So what's happened with you and Nell Mortimer? What was
the little time you played together?
Speaker 5 (02:01):
I'm quite trying the person to be honest.
Speaker 4 (02:03):
I know you are, But God, what happens do you
and Vite?
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Now?
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Yeah, she's with Michael.
Speaker 5 (02:09):
Who's Michael has? Oh shit?
Speaker 4 (02:11):
In a good way?
Speaker 5 (02:13):
You can know why I was coming right, Yeah, give
I know you missed this.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
I miss our music. I love the past, but it's
gone now. If you brought my life. I wish you'd
stop saying that.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
One day we might wake up hung over with two
thirds of the.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
Squads my name, but we'll always have this island and
you're beautiful music.
Speaker 5 (02:38):
Wows is in your trousers? Yeah the waves?
Speaker 3 (02:42):
No like shut out, don't say oh yes.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
I was really waiting to be like, oh yes, I've
been like hearing about no one's okay.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
That's why I'm gonna That's why what we wanted.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
To talk about because I hadn't heard about it. I
hadn't seen anything about it when I got invited to go,
and it is one of the most joyous, lovely, funniest
movie watching experiences I've had all year with this movie.
Even though I know, like movie tickets are super expensive
and so I don't say it lightly when I tell
people to see something in cinemas, and normally you'd say
that for like a blockbuster movie, but I do think
(03:13):
like watching this movie in a cinema and like being
able to hear everyone laugh around me, and like not
looking at my phone and really watching it and made
it a better movie watching experience. So it's a tiny
little movie filmed on a shoe string budget, and it's
about this guy who lives on this tiny little island
called Wallace Island.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
Has about five people.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Okay, good because that was my first question. Yes, Wallace
Island in the movie real place, So Wilan's not a
real post. No, I don't believe it's I was actually
don't have that information.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
I'll look that up for you.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
That wasn't a big part of the movie. And this
very eccentric man somehow has this huge amount of money,
which we'll find out later how he got it, and
he brings his favorite folk band back together, like he
pays them to come to the island. And the issue
there is that it's a former boyfriend and girlfriend team
who have broken up and not seen each other since.
(04:02):
And the male musician coming over thinks he's there to
play for a big crowd. He thinks he's been hired
for a concert, and he also doesn't know his ex
girlfriend is coming with her new partner. And they all
end up coming to this tiny little island and staying
there for a few days together.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
And is it sexy nos 's sad No no.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
It's got some heartwarming moments. It's mostly just really funny
because you've got these musicians on this tiny island. This
is centric music is no. He does play songs throughout
it a few times, and there is songwriting moments, and
Carrie Mulligan plays the female musician who comes over and
her husband Marcus Mumford, the musician, helped with some of
the songs.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
Okay, I'm the hottest couple right in the home.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
So bad that you said this, because I also needed
to know desperately what kind of music it was, because
in my mind when you say Ireland and folk, man,
I think of like and you guys would have seen
this in the news, like the stump clap hay hate
that has happened recently. Are you guys across this at all?
Not at all?
Speaker 4 (04:58):
Oh my god, guys.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
I realize the band Edwards shaft from the Magnetic Zeros
and it's like the hey ho, like, yeah, I'm not
gonna hear that.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
So there's a lot of hate for that at the moment,
and I love that. That's the best part of the song.
It was a period in time, guys, and we don't
need to read.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
It look it up.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
But when you say like flat Band coming to an island,
that's all I picture.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Oh, okay, no, not that. And so it's this lead
up to them playing this show. It's a couple sort
of getting back together. They all thought they were going
to stay in a hotel. They're staying in his house
with him, and it's just I won't say any more
with the plot because it's not a plot based movie.
It's more so that it's just really heartwarming. It's so funny.
Like I watched at the State Theater and that's a
huge venue and it was packed and every single person
(05:39):
was laughing so much, and the end people got like
a little teary and a little sad, And as I
walked out, I'm like, that was the loveliest movie watching
experience I've had in such a long time. And I
felt just so joyous and happy and just so happy
that my eyes had experienced this movie. So even though
it's a tiny little movie, I would say that like,
if you're just looking to have a little break from
the world, to go and even just go by yourself
(06:01):
to the movies, sit and watch it and just like
take it in because it was really lovely. I think
it's one of my favorite movies this year.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
I didn't think you were going to come in here
and recommend like an indie film.
Speaker 4 (06:10):
Yeah, I'm so like, I'm happy.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
There's many shapes and colors happening here. I mean, we
did start by talking about the Avengers, so yeah, I
do love the Avengers. So if you love the Avengers, there's.
Speaker 4 (06:24):
Literally no crossover.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
I just think we should experience these small like especially
it one was so flooded with prequels and sequels to
see like a truly original movie. It was originally a
short film and they made it into a full length feature.
It's really lovely. The acting is incredible, the script is incredible.
One of our writers, Katie, interviewed Carrie Mulligan about it,
so I'll link her piece, and I'll link her piece
in the show notes so you can read that. But yeah,
(06:47):
the Ballad of Walls Island. Go see it. You guys
both love it because I know the kind of stuff
you guys like you.
Speaker 4 (06:51):
It was really funny.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
Okay, I can't wait, no, no, okay, bit of change,
Oh okay, okay, I broke the rules. This hasn't come
out this week. It's been out for a few weeks now.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
Just say, as the person behind the scenes who approves
this episode, specifically of the spill. Every single week, there
is not only a week that goes by m I
don't get this in my inbox. And it's like, okay,
so I ignore the rules this week.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
Sorry, I don't care about it.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
I feel so vindicated by this because every week she
says I've broken the rules, like it's one off.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
I never do it again. The rules are going out
the window.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
The rules don't exist. So I've been watching this little
old show from a little old franchise called Alien. Yeah,
you might have heard of it. It's a big show.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Yeah, it's it's a huge movie franchise.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
It's a huge movie franchise.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
It came out well before you were born. So I
love that you that you love it.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
I do want to say, because I started watching Alien.
So sorry. The series is called Alien Earth. It's on
Disney Place.
Speaker 5 (07:49):
How's our girl?
Speaker 3 (07:51):
She's ready.
Speaker 5 (07:54):
You're going to be the first person to transition from
a human body to a synthetic.
Speaker 4 (07:59):
Because I'm special.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
That's right, You're very.
Speaker 1 (08:05):
Very special.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
We have a down space trap. I want what's on manship.
Speaker 4 (08:15):
We can do it. We're fast, we're strong, we don't break.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
It.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
Okay, zeb that the animals got out.
Speaker 5 (08:26):
This ship collected five different life forms from the darkest
corners of the universe, monsters.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
We don't lock them down.
Speaker 4 (08:40):
It will be too.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
Late before you get into it. Spoiler. Yes, Sigourney Weaver
is not in it. So I'm so sorry. It is
so so good. I started watching it so with premiered
with two episodes, and I watched the first two episodes
and I'm like, I'm not too sure about it. And
now four episodes are out and I am so obsessed.
(09:03):
The graphics in this are next level. There was a
massive budget for this TV series. The special effects and
even like the cinematography is amazing.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
In it.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
The whole Alien Earth universe, it is about how the
governments don't exist anymore. These three evil corporations now basically
run the world and they're all fighting over who can
discover immortality before everyone else. So there's like three different
mechanisms working. You have cyborgs, which are like enhanced humans.
(09:34):
You have hybrids, which are synthetic humans, synthetic beings that
have like a human conscious in them. And then you
have sins, which are basically just robots. So each one
of those are just like trying to fight to be
the best one.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
Can I ask a question, Yes, where are the aliens?
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Aliens? Okay, so you know how all the alien movies,
it's always like takes place on the spacecraft or on
a different planet. Yeah, this one takes place on Earth.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
That is so scary because the whole reason the first
Alien movie in particular is so scary is it's basically
it's not like a traditional space movie. It's a slasher
film set inside. Yeah, but that whole idea of like
someone following you and killing off everyone one by one
and like having the final girl and what was the
tagline in space, no one can hear you scream?
Speaker 4 (10:17):
Yeah, so true.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
It's so scared. So that's the first episode. It sets
all that up and it plays home. It's too like
the original Alien movie, like that beautiful scene where all
the astronauts are at the dinner table like eating them
and then laughing like they do that. Yeah, in the
first episode, and that's when you know, oh no, to
go down. So it does like take place in the
bit in space. But the whole thing is about the
spacecraft crash landing on Earth, which is usually when the
(10:41):
original Alien movies would end, is when it crash lands
on Earth. This one crash lands on Earth and then
you see the Aliens start to work its way through Earth.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
It's really really scary.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
But Aliens are having a moment now. Because then I
started watching this other show that's been out for a while,
but season three has just come out on Apple TV
called Invasion.
Speaker 4 (10:59):
Have you watched this?
Speaker 3 (11:00):
No, It's about aliens like coming to Earth and how
Earth will deal with aliens if they actually came to Earth.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
Oh, is it like a manual like to prepare all
getting here?
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Well, because I'm watching both of these shows side by side,
I'm getting them quite mixed up.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
The whole plot she just said is actually from a different.
Speaker 4 (11:20):
And the next week she'll recommend the other.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
So I'm starting to watch Invasion. It's really good. I'll
keep you updated on how it goes. But also Alien
Ert stars Sidney Chandler, who's Kyle Chandler's daughter.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
A new kid on the block, a.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
New Netwer kid on the block. She's actually quite good.
At first, I wasn't on board with it. She's playing
like this kid. So she plays a hybrid, so she
is like a twelve year old in this like adult
woman's body, which is kind of well, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
She plays it well, right, she plays it well.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
Yeah, she's really really good. But it's really good and
the special effects are just amazing. So if you like horror,
it is really horror like it is slasher horror sore
what I want, which is what you want?
Speaker 4 (12:00):
You will love it.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
And anyone else who's a bit like gets a big
grossed out with bodies and bodies being ripped apart.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Maybe not okay, love that on Disney Plus, right.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
On Disney Plus, and invasions on Our.
Speaker 4 (12:12):
It's my turn.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
So the reason that I'm here is to tell you
all about The Thursday Murder Club. Do those words mean
anything to either of you.
Speaker 4 (12:21):
I haven't read the.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
Book, but I know of it and I know it's
a huge and people who are obsessed with it are
like deeply obsessed with it, right.
Speaker 3 (12:27):
Yeah, all my friends are talking about it.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Yes, so which is cult. I mean I wouldn't say that,
but others, mate. Yes, the reason I'm here the Thursday
Murder Club. It is originally a book from Richard Osman. Who,
if you don't know, is like this massive TV producer.
He's an executive. He started all these wonderful game shows
in the UK. But he thought he'd have a crack
at writing like a debut novel and thought murder Mystery
(12:49):
was the way to go.
Speaker 4 (12:50):
Cut a long story shot.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
It's now being turned into a film for Netflix, so
you will find this on Netflix as of like five
o'clock yesterday afternoon.
Speaker 5 (12:59):
Their fears Joyce, are you in else bang on Target?
I'm Elizabeth. Would you take a look at that for me?
Speaker 1 (13:06):
Please?
Speaker 5 (13:07):
God tis a lot of blood. Would you care to
join us to discuss things further?
Speaker 4 (13:13):
Who is us?
Speaker 5 (13:14):
I'm sorry, how rude of me. We're a Thursday murder club.
We investigate cold cases. It's a club about murder. That
sound a bit bonkers.
Speaker 3 (13:26):
Been breaking news.
Speaker 5 (13:28):
It's been a mad and it's all mad. The victim
appears to have been bludgeoned to death. Now it's got
a real case to solve, isn't it wonderful? Obviously r
ip and all that.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
So it centers on four retirees who live in this
like gorgeous, lush us state. It's called Cooper's Chase and
as you imagine. It's set in the English countryside. It's
like these big, old, like almost gothic houses.
Speaker 4 (13:50):
It's like the.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
Retirement plan of my dream.
Speaker 4 (13:54):
Yeah yeah, yeah, like lush fields. Alpacas are there, there's water, aerobics.
It's a whole thing.
Speaker 3 (13:59):
Man, need to check my superannuation.
Speaker 1 (14:02):
Yeah. If you taking nothing else from this episode, check
your retirement plan.
Speaker 4 (14:07):
And now I'm out.
Speaker 1 (14:07):
Thank you so much for having me. Yeah, So, Cooper Chase.
There's four retirees that live there. They are the Thursday
Murder Club.
Speaker 4 (14:13):
So they get.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
Together once a week and as you can imagine, they
look over murder. They look over cold cases, cases that
will never solved, try to solve them.
Speaker 3 (14:21):
I just want, like some people do too much when
I'm retired, I'm not doing I'm literally sitting like sipping
a pinu clatter by a pool, not even.
Speaker 4 (14:30):
In the pool, not even Okay, that's fine.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
Well, these people are booked and busy, like they're solving
cold case murders until one day spoiler alert, murder happens
at the retirement home. Guys, not just one murder, not
just two.
Speaker 4 (14:47):
Wait, but there are three murders. They have to solve
real cases.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
In the retirement Club. So does that a serial killer
in the retirement club.
Speaker 4 (14:56):
No, okay, that's a blood bath. That's like the first
episode that the same body counter. Maybe we do have crossover.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
I can't wash that now because I'll be confused with
three show like the Aliens in the Retirement.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
This is what the instruction manuals for. So, yes, there
are a couple of murders that go down at Cooper's Chase.
They need to figure out who has murdered these people.
They're working, I want to say, somewhat alongside the police.
But the most important thing is that they all come
equipped with these incredible life experiences.
Speaker 4 (15:27):
Who are these four people? You ask? Great question? Let
me tell you.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
The cast for the Thursday Murder Club is maybe the
most exciting part about this entire Netflix adaptation.
Speaker 4 (15:37):
Helen Mirren hot sexy woman.
Speaker 3 (15:40):
Yeah, she said, I didn't know her affets are going
to be crazy in this A complete actress.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
The reason I said hot is the other day I
saw an interview when she was probably the show, and
she's so upset because people be calling her cute, and
I was like, who would dare to call just because
she's in her eighties I would slap that person across
the face.
Speaker 4 (15:54):
She's a baddie one hundred percent of.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
Ryan call me hot not pretty, Yeah, Helen Mirren one.
And the same so Ben Kingsley, who plays his character Ibrahim.
Like t I'm not convinced that it's not just so
being Kingsley rocking up on set, very nuanced, a very thoughtful,
deep thinker. Then we of course have who is my
favorite person in this entire franchise. Her name is Joyce
(16:16):
and she's played by the wonderful Cilia Imri.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Oh yes, I don't know who that is.
Speaker 4 (16:20):
Oh my god.
Speaker 1 (16:21):
Okay, you're gonna know her as aunt Una from Bridget
Jones Diary.
Speaker 4 (16:26):
Oh my god, but I know her.
Speaker 5 (16:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (16:30):
When she pops on the screen, you're like, I love
She's always everywhere. I love her.
Speaker 1 (16:35):
I know her for so many other things which we
will not get into now. I will address that later.
But then, of course you need like a rough and
tumble guy. You need someone who's seen some stuff on
the streets, led the troops in protest. Now he lives
in a nice retirement home. Whose name comes to mind
when I say that, is it Pierce Brosnan, Because that's
Pierce Brosnan.
Speaker 3 (16:53):
He's like the Brad Pitt of retirement.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
You're hot retiring, Well you do, and they did, and.
Speaker 4 (17:03):
He's like, I think he's in his eighties. You reckon, Yeah,
quickly fact check.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
He's so hot it could be their stephanie' Emily, what
do we just say about Helen Mirren?
Speaker 4 (17:13):
So true, We just called Helen Mirren about it.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
And women could be women could be hot in that.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
Yeah, men questionable.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
Okay, guys, he's seventy two years old. Yeah, he's another
he's also appears freaking brosna.
Speaker 4 (17:22):
He wants to retire. Now, that's fine. It's going to
be hot.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
Oh yeah, so excited.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
They get together, they solve murders. Their best part about
it is that they're old. They're a little bit of
doshing sometimes and that is the superpower though, because people like,
oh these the other.
Speaker 2 (17:35):
People like the Avengers Avenge stage twenty five or in
like stage four.
Speaker 1 (17:42):
Til yeah, oh yeah, this is like mcu face three
five hundred percent.
Speaker 4 (17:45):
They knew what they were doing. Oh my god, I
love this.
Speaker 1 (17:47):
It is so fun. It is like delightful. It's a
little bit camp. It's like brightly colored. It is just
a really good cozy.
Speaker 4 (17:54):
Who done it?
Speaker 1 (17:55):
And it's a movie, right, It's a movie. Like, if
you haven't read the books, that's so fine. You don't
need to, although I always recommend you do. I think
the book is just so so good, such a strong
debut novel. But if you haven't yet, like this weekend,
curl up on the couch, pull the blind down, and
like get lost in Pierce Brosman's eyes.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
I guess, oh my god, we will whatever you.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
Say so because there's a huge fan around this release
in particular, and then we know our audience, you the
Spiller is love TV shows and movies and dissecting them
and reviews so much. We have a little announcement to
make that the Spill universe is expanding, just like the
MCU exactly, Guys. I have been saying that for so long.
We are the next many Avenges.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
I'm Scarlett Johansen.
Speaker 4 (18:41):
You can ride that way, bag, go for it.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
So we have a new podcast launching.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
We do, and that is also Bury the lead, the
reason that I'm here. So starting with the Thursday Murder Club,
the Spill is expanding to include watch Party. It's our
brand new podcast. The first episode is myself. It's one
of our executive producers, Georgie Page and also Courtney Ammenhauser.
The three of us come to the Thursday Murder Club
franchise from very different places, and I feel like I've
(19:08):
tried to not give two too much away today when
recommending it. But if you want to know literally all
the law, like Georgie Page knows absolutely everything about this project,
Like I didn't even have to prep. I just would
ask her questions and know that she knows the answer.
The first episode is out now you can listen to it.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
Yes, while you're curling up at home looking at pres Brosden,
Like you watch the movie and then you go into
the feed and which will link out show notes, and
then you listen to the watch party EPP and it'll
answer any questions that you have about this movie.
Speaker 3 (19:36):
It's so good because I feel like when you watch something,
even like a TV show, like after every episode, the
first thing you want to do is consume content about
what you just watch.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
