Speaker 1 (00:11):
So you're listening to a Muma Mia podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Mamma Mia acknowledges the traditional owners of land and Borders
that this podcast is recorded on Hello, and welcome to
this Spill, your daily pop culture fix. I'm Laura Brodnig,
and today I am joined by all two special Guestso.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Hello, I'm Claire Murphy.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
You might know me from such other Muma mea podcast
as The Quickie and Well, and today I'm going to
tell you about a movie which I'm shook.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
That none of you have heard about.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Yes, we've been very remiss. We had to bring Claire on,
Who's going to scold us and then teach us.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
We'll learn a lot from Claire, I always do. And
I am Tina Burke. Professional menace. I suppose it comes
on this spill sometimes to share a feeling, and that's
what I'm here to do today.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
And also entertainment editor of Mmamera. Also true, but professional
menace sounds so much better. I'd lean in more listening
to that. Yeah, should we change my job description? Yeah? Absolutely,
I'll put it on my to do list for today. Beautiful.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Also, TV and I are essentially the same person because
we look almost the same. Oh.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Actually, Why have I never thought of that before?
Speaker 4 (01:14):
I just said it before. I'm like, she's like a cooler,
more interesting meeting. I know, guys, it's true. You'll see
we're into vodcast now. You'll see.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Literally, I was gonna say, for all of our listeners,
head over to YouTube and cast your vote.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Just like darkhaired girlies with a middle part who wear glasses.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
Yeah, and that's all it takes. Sometimes, twins, I feel
very left out by that anyway. Skating right past that.
So Yes we can watch is our special episode that
we drop every Friday morning where we talk about the
best new TV shows and movies that have just come
out this week, or sometimes we blow the lions for
a week or so. But everything can watch this weekend.
So Tina, you have a great recommendation for us today, correct,
(01:51):
I do, guys, get up. I am so excited because
there's nothing I left more than a rom com. If
anyone knows me, I am, Yes, and a British rom
comme at that, so, like you know, the very best kind.
So my recommendation this week is my Oxford Year on Netflix.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Welcome to the University of Oxford.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
Your time here is precious, sez it.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
We have a student all the way from New York,
New York, New York.
Speaker 5 (02:21):
Welcome, Welcome, the flirting with the hot teacher on the
first day.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
No, I oh, I love it.
Speaker 5 (02:28):
There is a serious bit of crumpet. This is just fun, fun, fun,
so fun, so fun.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
What is You and Jamie are quite the item. We're
having fun. Yes, that's what he's good at. But the
question is are you I have something I really need
to discuss with you. Trust me, Anna, it's not worth
the pain. Don't waste the short time you have left
in Oxford on me. There's no future here. I don't understand.
What isn't he telling me? You don't need to try
(03:01):
and fix my life.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Some things are just broken.
Speaker 4 (03:05):
My Oxford Year is a book adaptation also great recipe
for a wrong commat one.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
You love it's British book adaptation.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
And there's someone from Bridgerton, there's rain, there is someone
wearing a sweater.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
We're all having a no.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
So this rom com is kind of on like the
Netflix tier of rom coms, maybe in the middle. You know,
sometimes they do like a so bad it's good type
of movie, and then sometimes they do like a set
it up, which you know, fantastic, genuinely very good rom com.
This one seems to fall a little in the middle.
The trailer came out and did that classic Netflix thing
of like show us the whole film and still loved it,
still having a great time. That made me go, yes,
(03:41):
I will sit down and watch this. So the film
is about Anna, who's played by Sophia Carson. If you
don't know who she is, she's a Disney alum. She
also born in the same year as me, so I
missed her Disney days. I was too old and cool
for it at the time. But I have I've seen
her rise and now she's very much like a Netflix
leading lady in a lot of films that people might
have seen in like Purple Hearts for example, a lot
of rom com vibes from her. So she's playing an
(04:04):
ambitious young American woman who goes to the University of
Oxford to fulfill a childhood dream and you know, live
amongst the dusty old books and learn about literature and
you know what should happen. But she comes to Oxford
and there's a hot professor. So he's played professor, a
hot professor, problematic maybe, But Corey Milcrest who people will
(04:24):
know from Queen Charlotte the bridgeton spinoff.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
He's such a sweetie.
Speaker 4 (04:30):
Great chemistry, so he's obviously playing the Professor and you
know what, we'll ensue romance of course two Qutie Piess
hopefully and other dusty books amongst dusty books. So yeah,
they have really great chemistry together. One of my favorite
things is that if anyone ever watched ever After, do
Gray Scott who plays the Prince and ever After Drew
Bore He's in this so it's just like an added
(04:52):
little like charming British gentleman to the fold.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
Many obsessed with him, especially Sorry. He's one of the
best prince charmings around and I feel like he doesn't
get included when we're ranking prince charmings in conversations. But
ever After is the best Cinderella aptation. I think we
can all agree on that, right Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
And he's know any other simple adaptations.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
There was more like Lily James and the older Brother
from Game of Thrones, who I feel like has and
there's been there's been quite a few, but I feel
like that's the that's the really ever After is right
up there that you're gonna say, I haven't seen it,
Like stop the podcast. We're doing a brilliant ever after
and then I get a jeck.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
But so added charm and you know, I hope that
he gave Corey some like leading man Oxford bookie. We're
in an old castle vibes because you know that's the
direction of ever After, and now we're doing a modern
love story set amongst the books. So yeah, great chemistry,
like easy Friday night watch. It's the kind of thing
that you just want to settle in with. It's just
got that perfect vibe for your Friday evening, a cozy
watch and some romance. And of course, you know what
(05:58):
would we be without some third act tension and like
will they won't they? I mean, of course, because they will,
they will spoiler alert they might end up happily ever after.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Do I need to use my brain very much?
Speaker 2 (06:11):
No?
Speaker 4 (06:11):
Great, and that's my favorite. I love to not use
my brain. Yeah, perfect brainless like good watch, but you know,
actually a good time.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
I think it's I think it's sweet and charming. Oh
I love that on Netflix. Oh Netflix, Okay, that's me
set for tonight. All right, I'm going to take us
in a slightly different direction because a show that I
really love called Twisted Metal has just come back for
season two on STAN. I am Calypso and I'm hosting
(06:39):
a tournament. If you win, I will grant you.
Speaker 5 (06:43):
A single wish.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
It sound for the outsiders to get their fair share.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
If we win, we can wish to bring down all
the walls. We're taking them all down, the system of
the walls.
Speaker 4 (06:55):
Alle go out, Prepare for battle in ten.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
Nine. People would hate me for this, but you could
almost compare it to the Last of Us because it
too is based on a very popular video game. It
too is like a dystopian society where like the world
has broken down and people have to form these different
communities to survive and kill each other and their threats.
But the similarities kind of end there because The Last
(07:23):
of Us is kind of like Prestige TV and this
is more just like fun action but glued to the
screen for all the craziness. So it stars Anthony Mackie,
who people would know, Yeah, does he need an introduction?
Speaker 4 (07:37):
That hot, hot man, beautiful, beautiful, funny, funny man.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Charismatic man, so talented well, he plays obviously Sam in
the Marvel Cinematic Universe if you've heard of it. He's
our new Captain America. And I do feel bad because
I didn't love his standalone Captain America movie, and I
feel like a lot of people really did, but for me,
it just didn't land, I thought because of misuse of
his time.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
But I feel like he's going to come back. So
did you like his TV show with Sebastian Stan No? No, yes, okay, fabulous? No?
Speaker 2 (08:02):
Yeah? Yeah? How can a Winter Soldiers that? I both
love their characters and I love the fact that he's
like obsessed with Sebastian Stan. Sebastian Zeen's getting increasingly more
embarrassed with their interactions publicly as things go along. But
I think maybe he'll be better in Doomsday anyway. This
is a Marvel review because though I will that.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
So his character in Twisted Medal is kind of like,
so we're setting like twenty years after this event has happened.
The world has broken down, and you've got to kind
of cross these wastelands to get to different communities. He's
like a runner who has to deliver this package as
the whole thing. Stephanie Beatrice from Brooklyn Line nine is
also in it, and like their kind of vibe on
screen is amazing. She's a bit of a car thief.
So they go on this like wild epic story in
(08:45):
the first season. Season two has just come out today,
so the first three episodes are out on stand today
and then there's gonna be a weekly episode drop. And
in this new season they're going into this like wild tournament.
So we're getting even I think more into kind of
like mad Max territory. But like, it's just such a
fun watch if you love action, if you love like
game adaptations. I don't know anything about games or gaming,
(09:05):
so like every time an adaptation comes out, it's like
a new world for me. I know nothing about it.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Can you give me like an idea on the dystopian scale,
because like if you were to compare my Netflix to
my husbands, for example, I try to avoid a lot
of dystopia because I feel like that's too real world
for me. Yeah, my Netflix is all like sunshine and
bright colors, and his is all like literally just black,
red and gray, and he's like living in dystopia. But
I need a scale of like how dystopian is this
distoped This is like it's.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Got action, it's got how much to kind of give away.
It does kind of get a bit bloody and over
the top, but it's not at the level of like
the darkness and the despair that you would get sometimes
from watching like The Last of Us and so not
as like, not as thirsty as the world's most perfect
TV show, The Walking Dead. It's kind of a bit
more actiony fun.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
Will I ever laugh at her? Yeah, Okay, that's fine.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
That's sometimes you're like, I'm not MU should laugh their
But that was wild And it's just like and like
they're both just so they're just both at such charismatic
actors on screen that I just love watching them. And yeah,
it's just it's a real fun time. But maybe just
like test out the first episode and see how you go.
There's other show I'd be like, no, clear, you can't
watch that. That's way too violent. I don't think twisted
metal sits in there.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Okay, violence I can handle. It's the bleakness of disco, Okay.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
Yeah, No, I feel like this doesn't make you feel
like you're like, this is a fun time and don't
really want to live in this world. But it's not
making me want to like cry into a corner, like
three episodes of the Last of Us. No, that's good,
do so, but if you do it, I'm crying. You
just let me know and I'll apologize.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Ye please.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
So Twisted Metal one stand Season two three episodes came
out last night and then it's dropping weekly, and I
think a weekly drop is the way to watch a
TV show, So you.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
Can't you're a purist, oat agree with me.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
I've met other purists out there who are like, the
director's intended us to watch them one episode at a time,
not binge all late in one sitting, and I'm like,
if that was the case, they wouldn't start dropping all
late all at once.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
So well, those exactly those that have an experience. I
truly believe that you can't have a favorite TV show
unless you watch it as a weekly drop. This is
why people don't have favorite TV shows anymore. If you
sit down and watch something in one city and you're
looking at your phone and you're getting up to other things,
and you think about it for like three days and
you forget about it, that is not the same as
watch the show over multiple years and seasons and like
(11:13):
thinking about it all.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
Well, then couldn't you say the same thing about a movie.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
Well, that's a different because the movie isn't meant to
be like a different experience. I also believe you kind
of a favorite movie unless you've watched it multiple times, Like, oh,
you watched it once and it's your favorite movie. That's
a lie.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
So I just feel like people don't have favorite TV
shows anymore, and we just need to think about that.
Speaker 4 (11:29):
You've to watch for eight hours and you sit there
the whole eight hours and you don't look at your
phone and you don't get distracted, and you go, wow,
that was amazing, and you think about it, that's still
an no for you.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
You can really like it. I just don't can't believe
it your favorite show because it hasn't come into your
life like a TV show is. Like, just think about
watching TV shows as next Sime, this is a forty
like growing up and like watching a favorite TV show
seven seasons, twenty two episodes every night you go home
like this is the night I watch.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
But in those days, you might miss seven episodes throughout
the year because I don't know you were out.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
A real fan.
Speaker 4 (12:03):
Has your favorite show and I'm thirty PM and.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
Save up all your money by the DVD collection like
I did, and then watching them then you watch one
a week. Oh guys, I'm just saying, think about your
watching habits. Wow, think about how you're consuming content. That's
all I'll say on that. I feel judged, But okay, everyone,
it's not a long, hard look at how they're consuming
TV shows. It's not a game which brings us to
(12:28):
I guess our big finale of the day and why
Claire Murphy has joined us to tell us that we've
all missed a huge event.
Speaker 1 (12:34):
Like no pressure.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
Yeah, but a movie dropped on Netflix last month And
when I brought this up with one of the producers
of this show, they were like, oh, no.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
I've never heard of it.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
Oh, so you've never heard of the movie that has
set the new Netflix record for the most downloaded animated
film of all time. Have you not heard that the
soundtrack is blowing up? Not just the charts from the
country that this music is specifically designed for, but the
US Billboard charts, where one of the songs is currently
sitting at number two. It has been hitting number one
(13:06):
in the charts here in Australia. Not just the songs,
the soundtrack. It is while because you need to go
home tonight and watch K pop Demon Hunters.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
It's time.
Speaker 5 (13:21):
The world will know us pomp stars.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
But you will do much more than that.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
You will be Hunters.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
They're stealing the souls of our fans. Let's send those
disgrusting demons back to the deaths where they belong.
Speaker 5 (13:41):
Yeah, yeah, I.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
Can destroy the Hunters for good.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
It's time for a new strategy.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
Your fucking things every drop by.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
The Demon boy band.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
They're coming after the fans. Let's go get these guys.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
I saw this like kind of happening and bopping away,
and I saw that people were talking about records, but
I didn't engage because I thought, not for me.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
I think a lot of people are saying for us.
I was judging.
Speaker 3 (14:19):
But then I realized, neither of you have small children,
and so you've probably not been exposed to this, and.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
Your algorithm probably might not have even shown it.
Speaker 4 (14:26):
You've seen it all over TikTok, and I've heard the songs,
but I I don't only watch a lot of cartoony
or anime type of stuff. So now I'm learning that
apparently I need to because it's the best thing in
the world.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
Absolutely have to. This is such a good movie.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
I like an animated film, but I actually.
Speaker 1 (14:41):
Genuinely love this movie. It is so good.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
So the premise is every generation, there are three female
singers who come together and as they perform, they're maintaining
this thing called the hon Moon, which is like a
protective layer between us and the demons that lie in
the underworld.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
I mean, I love a story with demons. I was
gonna says the demon.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
Sod and the demons the way that they've created them,
they're just they're so crazy looking, but like they're almost cute.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
The dem hot or no, because it's for children.
Speaker 1 (15:11):
Wait, some of the demons are hot. Wait.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
So the idea is that there is an entity in
the underworld that's a little bit pissed that he keeps
sending up these demons who can't kill off these singers.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
So the current iteration.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
Are a K pop band called Hunter Tricks, and they
are whoa when I tell you they are next level performers.
You can see the hon Moon generating and becoming stronger
every time that they sing. So let me just give
you a little taste of the song that's currently number
two on the Billboard charts. This is like the peak
song of the whole thing.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
But it is so good. It's called Golden.
Speaker 3 (15:46):
Have a listen. It's so good, like I cannot tell you.
(16:06):
So the way they've crafted this is there are voices
for the characters, and there are singing voices for the characters.
So the one you just heard singing there Arden chose
the voice of Rumy So you might remember her from
teen Wolf.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
Yeah I love her, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
So good, but her singing voice is a woman who
goes by the stage name EJ.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
Now.
Speaker 3 (16:23):
EJ was one of those like K pop stars that
trained with SM Management to become like they've created some
of the biggest K pop groups of all time, but
she failed on her debut to really go anywhere with it,
so she kind of took a step back and started
writing music for other K pop stars and has had
massive hits with some of the biggest K pop names.
(16:44):
So they hired her to write the songs for this film,
and she did the demos like that song you just
heard so bloody. Well, the producers were like, well, you've
earned yourself.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
The singing voice of this character.
Speaker 3 (16:56):
Did not have to audition nothing, So she's taken that
failure of becoming a k pop sut of having the
biggest songs in the world.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
Yeah, absolutely right.
Speaker 1 (17:08):
So back to the plot.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
The idea is that entity in the underworld upset that
his demons are failing. Now Ginu, who is a demon himself,
hot demon.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
That's all I wanted to know, a hot demon, hot
demons need it.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
Fourth and he says, I have got a different idea
on how we can take these girls down. Hunterricks needs
to go down, so they and four other hot demon
boys go up to the surface and create the Sager Boys,
who are a rival K pop band hot.
Speaker 2 (17:39):
Demon demon pop band, fiction fan fiction come to life.
I love this.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
It is like every hot K pop man you've ever
seen rolled into one. You don't get to know the
rest of the boys very well because they're not essential
to the story, but like the characters that have created
are so freaking cute. And there's also a tiger and
a magpie which is from Korean mythology, who are also
they are so cute.
Speaker 1 (18:03):
They are friends, and let me.
Speaker 3 (18:05):
Tell you that's what you want to know, a story
about how the magpie gets its hat. We're so unexpected
that I literally lolled out loud.
Speaker 1 (18:11):
It was so freaking cute, so look out for that.
Speaker 3 (18:14):
But it is such a great story, like there's lessons
in it for kids, but also there's hot demons and
there's like great music. This soundtrack is now living in
my brain. Like I drove for three hours the other
day and listened to the soundtrack. Some of the songs
I repeated several times on the way it will get
it not just like earwormy, it's like in my soul.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
Now that's how good the music is.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
Oh my god, I love that. And also is there
a better feeling than when you like fall in love
with a new soundtrack and then you can get in
your car, yeah, on the highway and just be screaming
the lyrics in your own world, like there's no other
feeling mus better.
Speaker 3 (18:47):
And if like I can tell you now, none of
us can humanly hit the notes that EJ does in
these songs, but you will try, and people might judge
you from the car next door, but let it go.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
The car doesn't judge.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
The car does not judge. So K Pop Demon Hunters.
It has been out on Netflix for about a month.
It's doing record numbers. You must sit down or even
if you don't have kids, like, trust me, you will
like it.
Speaker 1 (19:08):
It's really cool.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
Okay, I think I'm sold. I'm sold.
Speaker 4 (19:10):
I was sold on a lot of things, but I
think the cute animal friendship really pushed me over there.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
The Hot Demon sold me.
Speaker 4 (19:15):
Yeah, also the rivalry Rivalry Demon, and it's all, yeah,
I want to.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
Now there's a lot of discussion about whether there's going
to be a sequel. There is a scene at the
end which has got a lot of people thinking that
there is, but there has been no confirmation. But I
can tell you now with the success, and none of
these people understood how successful this was going to be.
So even like the guy who is the singing voice
for Genu the Hot Demon, he was like, I recorded
these songs like eons ago and I almost forgot about it.
(19:41):
And now he's been thrust back into the spotlight and
he's like, holy shit this and so like there may
be a sequel coming, we don't know.
Speaker 4 (19:49):
And so obviously like this music has taken off, so
do we know?
Speaker 2 (19:53):
Have they yet?
Speaker 4 (19:53):
Are they going to do a tour?
Speaker 2 (19:54):
I would love that front rope.
Speaker 3 (19:56):
Oh my god, you know, I'm so desperate to hear
more from EJ. But she doesn't perform She's been writing
songs for other performers and so like that music is
out there, but you don't see a lot of hers.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
Was so interesting. Yeah, now is she?
Speaker 4 (20:09):
I guess in real life life and in a movie okay,
pop Star by her and Cinderella Story.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
Oh all of this okay, Well, we'll sold two new
movies to watch tonight, do it well. Thank you so
much for listening to the Spill today, and make sure
you're following the Spill on TikTok and Instagram. And look,
maybe you want to vote through whose recommendation you like
the best today. I don't know. It's not a competition.
Speaker 1 (20:29):
Stop making everything a competition.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
And thank you so much to Claire and Tina for
joining us and sharing those recommendations. And will be back
in your podcast feed at three pm today.
Speaker 1 (20:38):
Bye bye, bye bye
Speaker 5 (20:44):
Lan
