On the show today, we have two binge-worthy new TV shows for you to watch this weekend.

One is a sexy new teen drama mystery, based on a best-selling book. It takes place on a luxurious island and was created by the dame genius woman who brought us The Vampire Diaries.

The other is a new series that has just landed on Netflix, about a rich and powerful family who make some questionable choices while keeping their business empire afloat. Let’s just say it’s giving us Yellowstone vibes.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
So you're listening to a Muma Mia podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Mamma Mia acknowledges the traditional owners of land and borders
that this podcast is recorded.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
On from Mama Mia.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Welcome to the Spill, your daily pop culture fix. I'm
Laura Brodnick and I'm m Vernon, and welcome to weekend watch.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
My favorite episode.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
We don't always like to play favorites, but this is
where I am at the stage now when I'm like
watching new show that I've become obsessed with, which I
have done this week all week. As I'm sitting at
home my little couch watching it, I'm like, I can't
wait for a week and watch.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
I can't wait for a weekend watch. I can't wait
to tell this spill.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Oh my god, because we obviously can't talk about like
I feel like both of our weekend watches would have
been Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yes, Yes, And I was the one who was like, no,
we have to do it earlier, only because I was
I didn't want you guys to like listen to this
episode and be like, obviously, Emily and Laura, we've already
watched most of Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, but yes, on yesterday's show,
we gave our full we can link that in the
show notes. We gave our full unfiltered spoiler. Three thoughts
on the new season of Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders because all

(01:16):
severed episodes are out on Netflix now. But if you
need something else to watch, we have two salacious, sexy,
sexy darama rich dramas. Sexy rich dramas, which I think
I can safely say for you and I and all
of our listeners is all we want to watch right now.
Rich people in beautiful places doing terrible things.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
Yes, it's so separated from our everything, and the stream
were delivery and sad, so poor and sad.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
I rarely do terrible things. I wish I could. I
wish I could do a murder. We can't. I know,
I stomach for it. Well, it wouldn't if you and
I did a murder. It wouldn't if we did a murder.
If we committed murder, you know what.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
I think we do, Okay, I would think so. I
picture us like on a beach in cardigans, and then
there's like.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
Never wore a card again in my life. That's fine.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
The dead body and then we're like, oh, we have
to hide the body let's dump it in the ocean,
but we didn't track the tides right, so we dump
it in the time.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
We get to show.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
And it's got whatever idea attached to it because we
dropped it or something, and it's got like fake eyelashes.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
On my phone. This is okay.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
This is one we could never be the stars of,
like a true crime murder plot, because the murder will
be solved in five seconds. The police would be like,
Emily and Laura did this because they like one of
them left their wallet here, and.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
Then they'll be like, listen back to this episode of
the Spill.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
We've literally just.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Talked about how we do it, and the crime would
be it would be a two minute podcast, so we're
not interesting enough.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
If we do do.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
A murder, spiller is we'll recap it.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
Of our failed murder.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
Anyway, Emily, what did you want to recommend today?

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Thanks for making me first. So very similar Vain as
we were talking about, like rich, sexy kind of crimey
series on Netflix. It's called The Waterfront and it is
a crime drama.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Would choose to be a part of this family.

Speaker 4 (03:12):
We have money and standing that something should be in
the past, tense Westresling.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
We're gonna lose the restaurant in the Harbor, and we
have to come up with two million dollars in less
than three months.

Speaker 4 (03:24):
What are you gonna do.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
I'm gonna take control of things.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
Selling drugs is a drug.

Speaker 4 (03:31):
It's hard to find.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
Your way back. And it was created by Kevin Williamson,
who I did a bit of research on and I
found out that he's also the creator of Dawson's Creek
and Scream.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
I freaking love that, man.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
I know, I just put my hand on my heart
as you said that, but I almost felt like that is.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
Going to happen right now. I should have done like
a salute or a curtsy. Well, that's what this man
means to me.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
He's created all of my Scream obviously one of my
top four movies of all time. I put a lot
of thought into that list, and also Dawson's Creek a
seminal moment of not just pop culture, but just TV
and life and everything.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
Okay, I think you're gonna like this because so it
came out yesterday and all episodes are out now, and
it's centered on the Buckley family and they're like a
big family that owns a huge, big fishing empire. It's
set in a fictional town called Heavenport, which is in
North Carolina, and their business comes down. The dad of
the family have like these heart issues, so the family

(04:31):
starts to think of slightly illegal ways on how they
can make money. It's very similar to like Yellowstone, like
the Yellowstone Universe.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
Yeah, very similar.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
But it also stars Hold mccallanny, who if you don't
know that name, you'll know his face because I was
looking at his face and I did one of those
things like where's this man from. He's from mind Hunters
on Netflix. Oh yes, yes, and he is so so brilliant.
I think that was Netflix's worst mistake is not renewing
mind Hunters.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
Yeah, because they let it go for years and they
bring it back and then ends on Smith.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
The worst cliffhanger possible, and they've never bought it back.
And I feel like I aggressively stalk Hold because he's
always talked about it and he's like, I don't want
to do it again, and he's going to try to
do it again. But this show is so so good.
So if you are looking, if you are a big
fan of like Yellowstone and those big like family empires
who live in rural parts of America, who are dealing

(05:23):
with like shady people. This one is for you.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
Okay, love that.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Mine's also about a rich family doing bad things. It's Yellowstone,
but this is this has got a beautiful, beachy vibe,
so it's a little bit different.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
It's a bit different to my fishing fan.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
So this is called We Were Liars, and it's actually
based on I can't wait to watch this, You will
love it.

Speaker 4 (05:46):
Yes, we are those Sinclair's. Some people call this American royalty.
We were happy, we wanted for nothing just we don't know,
but something terrible happened last summer and I have no
memory of what or who hurt me. I have always

(06:11):
believed that women are entitled to our secrets. I need
to see all the lies lead to me on.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
That beach alone. It's so good.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
So it's based on the book of the same name,
which was a huge hit when it came out, even
one awards and things, so it's you know, peek literary.
The first thing that drew meto this show is that
this is actually our reviews this week, so in sync.
Because this was created by Julie Pleck and I will
watch anything that woman puts on TV because she is
the one who it was the show run of The
Vampire Diaries. She saw those she saw those books, she

(06:42):
brought them to life. She did the casting, she did
everything that she even like would check the costume, she
wrote the ending, she did everything. Then she also did
the spinoff series, The Originals, and also Legacy. So this
woman has created some of the best TV moments from
the last decade or so.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
And she knows how.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
She has this intrinsic thing of seeing a book and
knowing how she'll bring it to life and make it.
This really kind of like schmaltzy dramatic teen drama that
also wildly appeals to adult.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
Yeah, and makes it like just more than like a show,
but like a full universe.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
Yeah, exactly so. And the casting for this was quite good. Basically,
it's about this family called the Sinclair family, and they're very,
very rich, but every summer they go to this island
that they own kind of near Martha's Vineyard, and rich
peak rich because they own this island near Martha's vineyard
and it has all these different houses on it.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
Martha's Viennyard is so rich. I don't even know where
it is, Like I can't even look at it up
on Google maths.

Speaker 4 (07:39):
For you.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
It's like asked you to put in your bank balance
and it's like not for you. And just imagine like
not even Martha's vineyard, but then the island off it
and on the island, so it's the mum and dad
like Mum and Dad Sinclair and they have their three
adult daughters and on the island they all have their
own houses as well where they and their children stay.

Speaker 1 (07:55):
This is so the dream for me and my family. Yeah,
your family wants to be the Sinklers.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
If my family and I could live on an island
and we all each have our individual house, I'm done
for life.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
Yeah, having separate houses really the key to So they
have three grown up daughters who bring their families to
this island every summer, and there's a bunch of kids
who are around the same age. So the main girl
is Cadence and she's played by Emily alan Lynde who
you might not know that name, but she was on
one of the stars of the Gossip Girl reboot that

(08:26):
came out a few years She's the blonde one and
at first she was a very nondescript character, and then
she just became for me, like one of the most
interesting characters, not just because she was in a thropple
and that was really actually a beautiful storyline, but she
just kind of had that thing where she really popped.

Speaker 3 (08:40):
So she's all the actors in the re like the
they were all great.

Speaker 2 (08:44):
Boot was horrible, but all the act the actors were growing.
I'm sitting down to interview those kids.

Speaker 1 (08:49):
Kids.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
They were their twenties before the reboots started, and I
kind of wanted to and I kind of wanted to
be like, guys, this show is bad, but you're a
great You're great.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
I know.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
Well they're all doing good stuff now, so it's okay.
So her name is Cadence and she's the only daughter
of I think the eldest sister. The other sisters, one's
played by Maimi Gummer, who, if you don't know that name,
that's Meryl Streep's daughter, and I feel like, if Meryl
Streep is your mom, it's okay to be just claimed
by that. The other sister, what is played by Candace King, who,

(09:19):
if you don't know that name, is Caroline Forbes in
The Vampire Diaries.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
Oh my god, where's she been.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
She's been acting in various things, but basically she was on.
She was like the big breakout star. Was one of
the best kind of like character actresses. All sisters, they're
all adult sisters. So Candace King, when I saw her
being one of the sisters and a mom to a
teenage girl and well having other kids, I was like,
hang on a darm second. I feel like five minutes
ago that girl was a teen vampire. She's only thirty eight.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
Oh my god.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
But Julie Pleck loves her so much from Vampire Diaries
and just really wanted her in this role. They just
kind of made it work. It's fine, we suspend disbelief.
So the story is, so these three sisters come to
this island with their parents every summer. There's a bunch
of the cousins who are around the same age, so
Cadence the main teenage girl who's kind of like the
hero of the story, and then her other cousins, Johnny

(10:08):
and Mirron, and then they are this little gang of four.
And the fourth person is this boy called gat who
is the nephew of one of the sister's boyfriends. So
they come out every summer and so you will.

Speaker 3 (10:20):
Love shows where it's just like a shitload of characters.

Speaker 1 (10:23):
Yeah, that's the thing.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
It's so many characters. They're all in this island. They
take you through from like there's footage of them when
they're kids, and you see these four kids together growing
up on this island. So it's Cadence and Gat and
Miran and Johnny inseparable, these kids having this really ideally life.
They get nicknamed the liars because they lie all the time,
but they lie to protect each other. And then it
cuts to them when they're teenagers.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
It seems like foreshadowing to me.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
Well, yeah, and then it cuts to them as teenagers, right,
and they're all having this beautiful summer. But now Cadence
and Goat are older and they start to fall in
love and have a steamy kiss, and all this other
stuff is happening. Like one of the sisters is trying
to get married the other ones in this divorce, and
there's a private investigator. The other sister hooks up with
the guy who brings the supplies and it's.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
A whole other guy.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
Yeah, but also then her husband arrives, so there's all
this and there's some other drama. It's all this like
deep rooted family drama going on that, and then it
starts splitting between different timelines. So it starts splitting between
this summer that they call sixteen because they've been on
the island for sixteen years, like this is their sixteenth
summer and they're having this beautiful time, and then some
horrific accident happens, and then it fast forwards a year

(11:28):
and Cadence had some sort of accident and she can't
remember the last few months on the island. So she
comes back to the island and everyone's acting weird, like
obviously something wild happened and no one will tell her.
And it's easy to go through between the two time
frames because in the first summer where she's all happy
and falling in love, she's blonde, and a year later,
when she's got memory loss from a dramatic brain injury,
she's brnette.

Speaker 3 (11:49):
Thank god they did that. And then so I actually
do get really confused in those time.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
Yeah, no, I think you one hundred percent no. So
it's yeah, it's this beautiful kind of like idyllic story
with secrets, and then as each episode goes on, it
goes between the two timelines, piecing out what happened to her?
How did she go from having this beautiful summer and
like starting to fall in love to washing up on
a beach half na kid, really like hurt, clutching this
necklace that's like a family heirloom, that's like foreshadowing, and

(12:16):
then people keep saying to her, we don't know what happened,
and then it comes to like, we're not going to
tell you what happened, but like something really really bad
happened to her.

Speaker 1 (12:23):
Is a at safe.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
So every episode gives you a bit more of the
much in this I should say, like it's a bit
it's like very schmaltzy, yeah, and very kind of like
overly dramatic kind of thing, but like that's how Julie
Pike tells a story and I love her for that.

Speaker 1 (12:37):
So all episodes are right now on Prime Video. So
we were liars.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
Just make sure you give yourself a bit of time
because once you sit down to start watching it, you'll
just want to like speed through the whole thing.
