Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're very excited about this.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
We only found out about a week beforehand, and normally
we don't normally get these chats, but we got a
chat with Billy Eilish, which and I think it's rare
that you and I have someone that we're both.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
Kind of equally in adoration of.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
But she's she's in the pocket probably one hundred and
fifty million people right now who think she's just the
absolute cat's pajamas.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
And there's a reason why she's so popular, and that
is because she's just bloody. Also, the great news is
she exceeded all expectations. Now we're about to play the chat,
but we just thought before we play the audio of
the chat with Billy Ye. This thing was done at,
like we're saying it probably a forty million dollar property.
Can't say where it was, but there were views of
a harbor.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
We can say it's the Sydney Harbor. That's fine. There's
enough there will too much.
Speaker 4 (00:46):
People might be able to figure it out. But because
paps and stuff are, they're nuts.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Gone there when we got there and then one of
the record rips out the front and we were like,
oh wow, cool location. He was like, yeah, the paps
have already found it though, so she's hunted.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
So I started posing just in you never know.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Anyway, we walk down there, walking to the house, and
it's it's it's such a surreal experience because you see
Billy there she is, and she was.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Through about three security guards. So we're just hanging out
in the foyer of.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
Course, and then there's Billy looking over a fence into
Sydney Harbor and it's one of those weird things where
it's like we do we walk over to her and
like introduce ourselves and then start the chat or do
we wait for her to engage with us anyway?
Speaker 2 (01:26):
We chose the latter, yeah, which I think was a
good decision in there, let her have a time, want
to like, you know, call.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Out to her. That's it, yeah, exactly. Yeah, Yeah, would
have been stange.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
So we sat down in our chairs and I'm pretty
happy that there's no audio of this, but then we
engaged in I think some of the world you engaged.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
I was slightly involved because but what they're sitting out
the audio and the cameras and by the those like
fifteen to twenty people kind of just circulating around three chairs,
which is incredibly uncomfortable. There's someone there's microphones on these
chairs next to an infinity pool overlooking the harbor, so
there's plenty going on. Her mum's there, I recognized from
(02:06):
the docco her record or her publicist is there as well,
just kind of sitting and waiting for you, by the way,
so everyone's watching you.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
There's two cameras on you, two cameras on her, and.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
She's walked over by this hade and introduced herself.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
She's casual, she's chill, and me she's so cool.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
She's wearing a classic cool outfit, which is just you know,
she looks like she's about to drop in at the
skate park, which, as you said to me afterwards, like
I don't think anyone else can pull that off at
the moment.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
I don't think so, but she can.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
She's got the seat that the spectacles, the square spectacles
on with those eyes that we.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
All know so well.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
The baggy shirt, she's got the three quarter shorts, the
baggy shirt, and then the bit that we both last on.
Then we had the moment I think we both realized
I've got something relatable I can talk to her about.
I used to wear those skate shoes when I was
in year six.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
And then all of a sudden, we're talking about look
at the cushion on your tongue of your shoes compared
to cushion on my tongue. And I even presented my
foot to show her how thin my tongue was. Thankfully
none of that was recorded.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
No, I'll never see a lot of day.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
But just after I presented the tongue of my shoe
to her, the interview did start. And I think before
we play the audio, I got an interesting question early,
but then afterwards you deliver a compliment and it gets
pretty bloody emotional. So here is our chat with Billy.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
Billy.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Wow, so lovely to meet you in person. Yeah, there's
so much we want to talk about with the new album.
But before we get into that, I've heard you talk
before about the fun that you try and keep with
Phineas during the writing process.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
And there's a game that you play. I don't think
Will knows the game. I don't even know the game
called fear or Fart.
Speaker 5 (03:48):
Oh God, I should have never brought this up to
the world. Yes, it's true, true.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
Can you explain to Will what the game it is?
Speaker 5 (03:58):
Oh? God, Okay, this is why I can't share things.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
Sorry, I'm sorry.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
I love this.
Speaker 5 (04:04):
Okay, Well, it's very simple. Basically, there's a there's two
categories and everything in the world can be put into
these two categories. And the categories are fear or far.
And it's basically like fear. Fear is like, you know,
the second guessing of it all, kind of being self conscious,
self deprecating, the you're doing it out of fear, not
(04:26):
out of fear, but it's like it comes from a
place of like not being sure and not being And
then fart is like you like the smell of your
own farts. You can do no wrong. You are, You're
the greatest to ever do it.
Speaker 4 (04:38):
What about for Will and I You've only known this
for about ten seconds now.
Speaker 5 (04:42):
I think fear is in the moment right in front
of me. It's a little fear, but that's good. But
the thing is that it doesn't mean good or bad.
It just means fear or fart totally, you know what
I'm saying. So like, like my first album, When We
All Fall Asleepoord we Go was fear. My second album,
Happier Than Ever was fart. Yeah, and this new album
was Fear.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
Yeah, for sure, what did you just right down?
Speaker 2 (05:03):
I wanna well, I just sorry you just mentioned your record,
so hit me hard and soft and I've got this thing.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
So I said it before this chat. I was like,
this is going to be really intimidating.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
I don't normally get intimidated, but I've just listened to
that record so much, and I said, like, shitlights six.
So I had this moment where I was listening to it,
probably in December. I was traveling by myself, and I
was like, if I ever get the chance to say
this to her, I'm going to say this to her.
So yeah, I've had a bit of time to think
(05:36):
about this, and I didn't know we have this interview
until like a week ago, and I was like, oh
my god, I've got to tell her the thing.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
Tell me okay, you're ready.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
Yeah, So I said, I like words, and I just
feel like I've written this in a words Yeah. So
I've written this kind of like I'm saying it to
you rather than as a review.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
But it's largely about the last two.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Songs, which I think are probably your best two songs.
Oh my god, particularly together.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Thanks.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
Okay, don't get farty after this, I can see you
getting farty, getting a little farty for Billy.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
The outro to Bittersweet is the intro to Blue, just
as the outro to this record feels like the intro
to a New You from brassy open filter. Since, through
sultry bohemian serenades, befitting the mul on rouge, you chant
with ghostly wisdom. I'm still on my knees, and that's
the moment I realized that this record will be beyond
your teenage tenacity. For when the rolling drums have Blue hit,
(06:32):
refraining many of this record's familiar melodies, you start to
undermine their meaning. I told you a lie, you say,
foreshadowing a depth which echoes through that final track. For
I challenge anyone listening to it not to uncover a
blueness beyond its simple definition. And as I learn of
this song's origins, maybe that is what you once meant.
But as your music has grown, so have you, And
(06:54):
like all great artists, your songs no longer answer questions,
but ask them. And so as the percussive ratatat tat
of the final Latin style drop arrives, I don't blame
you but I can't change you. Don't hate you, but
we can't save you. We're given this thesis. The blue
is not to be afraid of. That blue as humans
(07:16):
is what we are. And the faster we accept the
victimhood of our father's plans as the violin's wail, the
faster we can.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
See how beautiful that is.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
Who is this woman, This woman who has documented her
plight with such touching honesty so as to make the
most eloquent coming of age art of her generation. This
woman who, since a girl, has laid bare her suffering
with such ferocity that it now burns like a lighthouse
of relief for anyone who may have lost their way.
(07:47):
What a gift that is, What a gift you are.
Speaker 5 (07:51):
Oh my god, everybody's gonna cry over there from Will.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
That's amazing. Well wow, yeah I didn't really know. I
just wanted to.
Speaker 5 (08:04):
When did you read that, like right after today?
Speaker 1 (08:08):
Yeah, that's amazing.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
Thanks, thank you, thank you for thanks for the thank
you for the music.
Speaker 5 (08:15):
That is so so.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
I realized that you kind of I read that Phineas
wasn't on the road with you, and I feel realized
it might be a bit lonely and you probably don't
get a lot of, like, you know, just good pump
ups and stuff.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
So I kind of wanted to give you a compliment.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
And just say thank you for everything.
Speaker 5 (08:35):
You bring up my brother and I'm like, I'm totally fine.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
Yeah, I can imagine you guys actually close relationship with
someone like that and you make something like that and
then like the person that unlocks all that stuff within
you is not there to do it with you.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
That must be tough. Sorry, I just I've been really
feeling you recently. Yeah, well thanks for the.
Speaker 5 (08:59):
Music, Thanks for that. Wow, we all got tears in
this bit. Wow, my god.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
And I think your shoes are cool.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 5 (09:12):
Pleasure christ you both have like stunning beautiful blue eyes.
It's all.
Speaker 4 (09:19):
I was.
Speaker 5 (09:19):
Also hearing you read that, I mean, so well put
and so beautiful, and so I feel like you. I
felt so seen and understood, and I just think he's
for writing that. And also all I could hear was
h two oh when you were talking because it's Australian.
We're in Australia, and I was, yeah, anyway, I love it.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
Just on your brother, actually was it was it hard
to I know, Phineas in your writing process. Wants to
know what's going on when you come up with a
lyric yeah or whatnot? Was it is it hard to
reveal to Phineas the stuff that's going on for you
when you're when you're writing.
Speaker 5 (09:54):
Honestly, of all people know, of all the people in
the world, Phineas is the kind of the one person
that I feel like I could say absolutely anything to
And I don't feel like scared, if anything. I think
when I do feel scared to tell him the truth,
it's more just that I don't want him to worry
(10:14):
about me or think I'm lame, but he doesn't ever
And and you know the times when I've been too
scared to tell him something, when I do tell him,
I always am like, Oh, why was I worried?
Speaker 4 (10:30):
It's just Phineas.
Speaker 5 (10:31):
He loves me so much and he'll always love me,
And it's just so amazing to have somebody like that.
I feel like we all deserve to have somebody like
that where it's just doesn't matter. You could say anything
and they would be just as much there as they are.
So yeah, Wow, I'm so touched by that. What do
you call that? Like a it's not really is it
(10:52):
a poem.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
That's really what I wanted because I was like, how
do I there's no question I can ask you, which
is gonna Like, I would rather just tell you how
good you are?
Speaker 1 (11:06):
Great you are, rather than do you want to keep this?
Speaker 5 (11:09):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (11:09):
Yeah, I wrote it down so I could rip it
out for you.
Speaker 4 (11:11):
Oh my god, I would love to keep it.
Speaker 5 (11:14):
Also, just what you said after also like so touching
and it just really means a lot to me. Thank
you so much.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
Good. I don't know how many people would just eye
bore you and tell you that. I'm sure lots of
people do.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
But I get a chance to write it.
Speaker 5 (11:28):
Oh my god, thank you so much.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Pleasure.
Speaker 5 (11:31):
That was amazing. Wow, that just made my day. Thank
you so much. Guys, are you coming to the show?
Speaker 3 (11:36):
Yes, next Wednesday, we're coming locked in good Yeah, pretty.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
Cool, super cool, Yeah, super rattling.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
We had a chat before Hamah.
Speaker 3 (11:48):
It was like, it'd be nice for her to have
the words as well, so potentially you can rewrite it
because you'd handwritten.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
The open letter.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Yeah, but we also both decided that it would be
weird for you to offer her afterwards, like, hey, do
you want the letter that I wrote you? But there
was eyes said, or do you want the letter that
we'll wrote you? And she like, I think you can
tell when someone like at that level of fame is
just saying yes, because it's like I'll be rude to
say yeah, you know, she like she really.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Did want those. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (12:16):
So I mean, in my head, she's reread that a
number of times.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Same in my head, why is she Yeah, I think
she's put in a scrap book like my favorite things.
Speaker 4 (12:23):
I'm thinking pillow case, he sleeps, she sleeps, the.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
Other the other.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
The other point this worth mentioning is so we had
this moment with her, We have that she takes the
notes off us and then I was mentioned before her
mum and her pr agent is sitting there, so we've
got to walk past her mom.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
Yeah, and her mom is sitting there.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
With just she's clearly been crying quite a lot. Yeah,
And she stopped me, and I didn't realize it was
her mum until sort of afterwards, and then she said
she stopped me, and she said to me, she was like,
thank can like as her like from her a mother,
Can I just say to you because you forget like
it's Billie Eilish, right, it's not a daughter, it's not
a she's not a girl.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
She's the star. And her mum said to me, thank you.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
So much for telling her that, like she really needed that,
which just yeah, again validated the whole thing.
Speaker 5 (13:10):
Was.
Speaker 1 (13:10):
It was awesome.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
It was really one of the coolest things I've ever done.
Speaker 1 (13:13):
Was it felt very good.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
And if you want to watch it, yeah, you can
on Instagram and TikTok.
