Speaker 1 (00:00):
Way coaches Shane Colmes appreciate you calling in. Uh. I
was just saying I really enjoyed just watching your team
play today, obviously having a huge amount of respect for
coach Miller and his piked in program. So for you
guys to go on that stage, uh and play at
the level you played, I just thought it was a
huge step and had to be a pretty proud moment

(00:20):
for your program. Just talk to just a little bit
about that.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Yeah, for sure, you know, coming into that environment, uh,
being being the first time RCC has ever been on
that stage. You know, you're always you're always wondering how
the kids will respond. And to come out at the
end of the first quarter and look up and see,
you know, we're down one too, you know, to an
SEC team that holds your own year in and year out.

(00:44):
You know, there's a lot of a lot of a
lot of a lot of pride, uh, you know in
that and a lot of uh you just guys being
gritty coming out ready to go. Uh. And it just
looked like our guys had something in their eyes that
they just they're ready for the moment. You know, you've
been prepared answer this all summer and you know, we've
been leading up to this moment for a couple of
years now, so we're just excited to get the opportunity.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
Well, no question, and coach, let's back up a little bit. Obviously,
you're no stranger to the SVC. Tell our listeners a
little bit about yourself and how you ended up becoming
the head coach there at RCCI.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Yeah, so I'm a graduate of Wessell in twenty seventeen,
played playing in the SCC my whole career, had the
pleasure of being coached by a few really good coaches
there and have some good experiences. And I actually went
to college to play football and football was my first love.
And came back from college during COVID and kind of

(01:39):
got involved with RCCA, got helped out with the junior
high game one time, and had no prior coaching experience,
and at some point over the next couple of months
they had asked me to take over the varsity job,
and you know kind of things went from there. That'd
be that would have been let's be three years ago now.
So first year, coming into the to the season, we

(02:00):
had a ten and eleven record playing and Christian schools,
you know, not like the competition we played today, and
then the next year we improved a little bit with
our competition and came out. We were fourteen and eleven
last year, and then you know, this year we're really
ramping up the schedule and looking to take a step
forward for sure.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Yeah, taking a look at that schedule, talk to us
a little bit about some of the teams we're going
to be playing.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
Yeah, yeah, So this Tuesday, we've got a big one
coming up at burn Union, playing at their place on
Tuesday night. Let'd be this is also the first year
that we're going to have a jv and varsity team,
So that's going to be a big night for us.
One of our jv and our varsity playing went from
a program. Last year we had eight guys in our program,
so now we got fifteen in the program able to

(02:48):
shoot a full jv and varsity team. That will be
another big milestone for us. Got New Hope coming up
on the schedule on December ninth, that'll be another one
for us. That'll be a good test. And you know,
playing some teams like Portsmouth this year, Wellston, playing some
teams like Huntington and Miller's, Fort Arrington, Saint Joe, So

(03:08):
just get some good games on the schedule really gonna
be able to measure who we are. But you know,
we're going to get a chance at redemption, uh you
know in these next couple of games, because we're gonna
be playing some pretty good teams this year.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
Coach, I'm sorry if this has been asked and answered,
but where does our CCA play its games?

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Its home games? So our CCA currently our home gym
is at Brookside Gym, Brookside Church on Egypt Piked. But
with the growth of our program and just the fan
base that continues to surround us, we've actually had to
move some of our varsity games for boys over to

(03:46):
Ohio University Chill Coffee at the Shoemaker Center. So we'll
be playing about seven to eight games over there at
the Shoemaker Center and kind of calling that home for
us this year. We're we're currently looking and raising some
trying to raise some funds to build ourselves at GM.
At our current gym only only teaks about two hundred
people and we've kind of outgrown that, which is a

(04:07):
great thing. But so we're going to be playing some
of our home games over at AEC shoot Maker Center.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
Well, no question. I thought you had a really good
fan base today. I thought they were really into the game,
and I thought they really appreciated your effort, especially there
in the second half when you guys were pushing it
back to single digits and continuing to play. So that's
that's awesome. So I'm looking down your roster. I think
you had fifteen people there on the roster today. So
you're saying that that will split into your JV and varsity.

(04:35):
About how many JV games do you think you will
get to play this year?

Speaker 2 (04:38):
So we're gonna have about twenty three j V games
this year, so yeah, we'll split that roster. We got
about nine guys that will also address JV. For us,
we got our six upperclassmen. You know, this is the
first year also we have three seniors this year. We've
only ever graduated two seniors from the program, one from
last year, once from the year before. This is looks

(05:01):
like a young team and most people, but for us,
we're kind of top heavy as far as having you know,
three seniors and three juniors, so a lot of our
freshmen and sophomores will go down to that GV team.
And I really make some contributions. But you know, as
you guys saw today, we also have some young guys
that are going to come up and they're going to
contribute for a varsity as well.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
Well, no question, you leave me right into my my
next comment question. I thought it was really neat how
you've mixed some freshman, sophomore, junior seniors together, which I
know in coaching is not always easy to do, but
it seemed like they have great chemistry and play well together.
The Bevin kid, he was as athletic as as anyone
I watched all day. He's a special athlete and really

(05:40):
get off the floor. And then you know, the Callow
kid can shoot it. And then obviously your your young
kids really started to fill it up. I know, Elliott
got going there in the second half for you just
talk about the challenge of putting the roster together and
how it's developed and you've been able to find the
chemistry that obviously works.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yeah. Yeah, you know, we got three great seniors and
it really starts with that. You know, we've got gave Bevans,
Saniel Clevenger, and Daniel Garabedium, which uh, you know, you
guys didn't get the pleasure of seeing Daniel play. He's
a hard nosed kid that really he's our voice on
the floor. He would have made a difference for us today.
But you know, we got three seniors that they they
put blood, sweat and tears into this program and uh,

(06:20):
they're they're really leading the right way, and guys kind
of fall under that and see that and they follow
follow suit. And we were led by three great juniors
and uh, you know Gayden Beverley, our point guard who
you know today we played our best competition we've ever played,
and we come out we have four trend overs.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
In the whole game.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
And you know, I think that stays a lot about
our point guard and how he leads our team up
and down the floor and taking command of our offense.
And uh, you know, we got Nathaniel Clevenger a junior
as well, who's who's played well, king in and really
creative sparks for us. And you know Isac Collo can
can shoot the lights out of the gym. And you know,
beyond that, I've just seen him grow as a leader
and see him grown as a as a as a Christian,

(06:59):
and you know, he's just becoming a really great, great
young man and a great piece for our program. And
then you saw our po freshmen come in and make
some impact in Isaac Peacher. He he's a young point guard,
but man, he can play some ball and he came
in and really sure what he could do. And then
you know, Reid can light it up from the outside.
And you know the best part about him is he
can shoot it from the outside. But we've seen a

(07:20):
growth in his defense, in his effort. He had a
couple of huge rebounds there today, you know, playing bigger
than a freshman. So you know, it's a it's a
great team, and we got a lot of younger guys
below that its wing of season. Some minutes My brother
James Jude, he'll he'll get some minutes this year, and
then Calee Dorns and Joel Mitchell look to get some
some time at the varsity level as well. But you know,

(07:41):
we got a great team, Bay Joe, really well together.
I was, I was telling Lou earlier, you know, I
think the thing that we do the best is just
play together as a team. You know, there's no selfishness.
And you know Gates might have scored nineteen points that
he can tell you that, you know, a lot of
those points were set up by his teammates, and he'd
be the first Boys person to to point the finger
as teammates and say, you know, those are the guys

(08:03):
that created those looks. You know, just there's not finger
pointing as far as you know, when things go wrong,
we stay together. And you know, I think that makes
you a dangerous team as a season goes on.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
Well, no question, and Coach, I just think it's a
great story and I really look forward to following you
guys throughout the year. And I can't thank you enough
for calling in tonight and look forward to talking to
you each and every Friday night. That's the luck to
you this year.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
I appreciate you guys and everything you had to do.
Appreciate it.
