Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, coaches, Shane, congratulations on the on the two and
oh start. Like you mentioned, I think you win nine
a year ago, and certainly we're knocking on the door
of five or six more so as you come into
the season. The first thing that jumps out at me
when I've watched you play now two times from floor level,
you seem a lot more. I guess you just see

(00:20):
the year's growth. You're you're a lot more physical. You're
your kids playing with some some great intensity and some
some some great I don't know, just effort overall in
terms of the game. Is that a fair Is that
a fair comparison from last year to this year?

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Oh? Yes. You know, weights have been been a huge
thing to mind, hitting the weight room because we have
to get more physical. The game itself is more physical,
and the teams that are more physical, you know, come
termament time are the other teams to normally advance. So
we've worked in the off season pretty hard on the

(00:59):
weight and effort. It's always been there. I'm blessed to
have you know, fourteen fifteen kids that bring their lunch
pal every game. I told him, I said, that's one
thing that athleticism and things don't have. That comes from
your heart and how hard you want to work. So
that's what they're buying into, and that's what we're doing

(01:21):
right now.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Well, coach, you know, I'm always biased to the point
guard position, and I think you have a really good one.
I think as a senior, the Williams kid does a
real good job a quarterback and your offense, it seems
to have a real good feel for what you're wanting.
Talk to me a little bit about his growth and
what he gives you.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Oh, he's made leaves some bounds. You know, he can
now withstand you know, the physicality getting bumped and beat around,
because he's sure got beat up to night and he's
going to be a kid. And I've already told him
that he'll probably never come off the floor unless he
absolutely has to. He is our quarterback, is our leader,

(02:01):
and we got to have him on the floor.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
Yeah, no question. And again I talked about that physicality.
I know the Fisher kid plays with a with a
great motor and plays really hard. And I thought today
you showed a little bit of your versatility, or early
on some of that physicality showed up. But then when
you were able to break it open in the second quarter.
You started to do it with three or four different
kids shooting the three ball. Is that something you feel

(02:26):
like through the off season work has been added to
your team as a major improvement.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Our shooting has gotten a little bit better. We still
missed too many shots around the basket, but you know,
it's one step at a time. But I have so
many kids that have the capability of scoring that night
and night out. We've had two games now we've had
two different leading scorers, and we've had two different leaders

(02:52):
in rebounding. And that's the way it's going to kind
of be all year long.

Speaker 3 (02:56):
Yeah, that's the interesting thing that I that I noted
from the post scheme of your matchup earlier today is
that you notice that you know your team is small,
but they do hustle and they do grab a lot
of rebounds.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Yeah, you know, I think we had thirteen fourteen offensive
rebounds tonight and we had twenty three on Wednesday. We
just got to get better about putting them back in
the hole.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Well, I think, you know, early in the year, I
think that that probably has been a common theme and
I don't know a lot of times, you know, we'll
talk about defense being ahead of offense, and some of
those hustle categories are what you're you're you're hoping and
some of those things will come. I guess that's that
leads to me that next question I wanted to ask you. You know,
you've been doing this a long time as you go
from the nice start and in the league play, what

(03:44):
are what are some things that I don't know that
it's not going to get perfect before Tuesday night, but
what are some things you really want to focus on
on on trying to take that next step and push
past that four win mark and SVC play.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Next, make that next step. We need to finish around
the basket. We've got a bad habit right now at
looking at the contact and altering our shots rather than
playing through contact and not worrying about changing our shot
and keeping our shots the same. Because I'm trying to

(04:22):
tell them if it gets blocked, it gets blocked. But
if you alter your shot is just as bad because
you're probably not gonna make it either. So that is
one thing you know that we'll hit tomorrow when we
have practice about finishing around the basket.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
You know, coach, in the second quarter today, when you
guys are able to break it open. You guys go
to the locker room, I'm sure feeling pretty good about yourself.
And then in the third quarter, just the coach myself,
I could almost read your body language. You just didn't
like the way they ended up coming out. But I
guess i'd ask you this, you think as a team
it's trying to take that next step and push over
the five hundred mark. Do you think with some success

(05:01):
is something a little new, something that you're going to
have to learn to deal with as well. Maybe where
the kids get a little complacent, they're going into the hat.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Oh yeah, I even said that last year. You know,
when you're not used to winning, and it's not something
you can coach, it's something that the kids have to
learn and play through and be part of. You know,
when you get teams down, you got to take advantage
of that. When you get a little bit behind, that's

(05:30):
a different type of mentality that you got to have
so that you can come back. So these kids are
dealing with a wide range of emotions with these games.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Coach far I get you out of here, I want
to talk a little bit of the of the younger
levels as well. As you're building the program. I noticed
on the roster a lot of junior senior flavor to it.
Does that mean that we can expect some pretty competitive
basketball from the JV level down there at Southeastern as
well this year?

Speaker 2 (05:57):
Yeah, we were blessed. We have enough for a freshman
team that will compete with most of the schools. And
we've got a nice JV team put together of Dover
freshmen as well. And yes, the younger levels are looking
pretty good now.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
As Braden Burns the sophomore, is that about as young
as you'll go there on the roster.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
No, I've got two freshmen right now that will travel
with me and see time from time to time. Even
though they'll play four quarters JV. They will also travel
with a as well for next year, so I'll also
have two freshmen with us.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
Good deal. Well, Hey, I'm excited for on the two
and oh start. I certainly look forward to talking to
each and every Friday night. But it sounds like you've
got a good thing going there and I think it's
gonna be a great year for the Panthers. I appreciate
calling in all right, thank you very much.
