Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, coach, I appreciate you calling in. I know on
the girls side, you've kind of have somewhat of a
busy schedule so far, played three times already, and I
know you you guys really cranked the schedule up there
a little bit with shared in and then you had
a nice win over Miami Trace and got off to
one and no start in the league with a win
over Westfall. I guess the first thing I'd ask you,

(00:21):
with the incredible success of the volleyball program and you
having many of those girls on your roster, probably haven't
had a lot of time in the gym, just talk
us through the preseason a little bit and how that's
been going with the Lady Warriors.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Yeah, we have not had a whole lot of time
in the gym. But you know, it's a it's a
double sided point. You know. Anytime you know your kids
get a chance to play in those high pressure, meaningful
environments like our girls did all throughout the volleyball tournament,

(00:54):
that that pays off dividends, you know, down the road,
there's no substitute for being in those kinds of environment.
So while it may hurt us a little bit in
the short term, ultimately, uh it pays off down the road.
So yeah, it's been a you know, it's I get
to the first game of season, you know, every year

(01:16):
and feel like, man, there's there's fifteen things we didn't
cover that we need to cover, and uh that list
is longer this year. But uh yeah, we start off
with Shared and who's just really really good. They're skilled
and athletic, big and strong, and but I was proud
of how our girls kind of fought competed in that game.

(01:39):
And then uh yeah we've uh we've already had three games.
We have another another one from up tomorrow night against Huntington.
They're a really really good basketball team. Uh. Taluer does
a great job with them. They're always there, they always
can keep really well, they're they're fundamentally sound, they do

(01:59):
the right things. And then you know they have one
of the best players in league and Ali Baker. So uh,
it's it's kind of been a whirlwind. There hasn't been
much time to kind of stop and teach like we
would like to at this point in the season, but
it's just kind of the way things fell, and so
we just have to make the most of it.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Coach, who are some of your role players on your
roster this year.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Well, everything kind of starts with Marley Halcolms. She had
a fantastic freshman season last year, averaged over twelve points
a game and shot over thirty five percent from three
last year, So everything can kind of start with her,
and then we have we have four other girls that

(02:42):
played quite a few minutes last year. Cameron Towers is
in her thirty years starting for us. She she kind
of does everything for us, really solid defender, plays her
role really well. Jac Smith's our point guard. Phenomenal on
BLAE defender has kind of quickly established herself this year

(03:04):
as a really good distributor, averaging over five assist for
game through the first three. My daughter Corinde is our
post player. And then Ava Ferrell is our fifth starter
and and she got some meaningful minutes for us last year.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
You know, coach, when you when you go through the
shared and opener there had a chance to see that
one and then uh, you follow up with a good
Miami Trace team and going into play an improved west
Fall team. What do what do you like about? Uh?
The improvement you've seen just in the short time there
from the opener through throughout sounds like west Fall really

(03:41):
really improved and that was a that was a nice
start for you guys an SBC ploy.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Yeah, they have really improved. And Adrian Male for them,
is just a really tough matchup. She can kind of
score from every level and is a is a good, big,
strong kid, and it's just again, it's a really tough
matchup I think for most teams. So you know, we
were happy to come out of that with a win.
I think what I like early, I think we have

(04:09):
a long way to go in terms of in terms
of just you know, being found offensively and making sure
we're in the right spots defensively. I think what I've
liked early is, you know, in the Shared In game,
there was never a point where our girls quit in
that one. They played hard until the very end. And
then in these past two games, both games got really

(04:31):
tight in the fourth quarter. And with a group that
is playing basically everyone's playing a new role from what
they played last year. So to get into those tight
games in the fourth quarter and still keep our composure
and find a way to pull those out, I think
has been really encouraging for me because that's that was

(04:52):
kind of a question mark I had for our group
coming into the season.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
Yeah, it's interesting on the offensive end, obviously, you know,
you you've been hit pretty hard by graduation over the
last two to three years, and you now you're still
very talented. I think if I were to evaluate your team,
it's fair to say you're not nearly as deep as
you've been. Sure, and I know how much the defensive
end has been such a staple with how you've used
your defense or create some of that offense. Has there

(05:17):
been a little bit of a change due to the
lack of depth or are you still able to get
after it the way you want to do?

Speaker 3 (05:23):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Absolutely. You know we're still going to guard the same
way that we have. It's just going to happen a
lot more in the half court as opposed to the
full court. You know, the past if four or five years,
we've really, with our depth, have been able to expend
out into the full court and really get after teams
for ninety four feet. We'll kick our spots when we

(05:45):
do that this year, but for the most part, we're
going to be a half court man and man team
and still continue to defend teams the way that we
have in the past.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Coach, do you have the numbers for a JV team?

Speaker 2 (05:58):
We are playing two quarters right now. We have eleven
girls in the program and so we're playing two quarters
of JV.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
Is there anyone who stands out where you're really looking
for them to improve the season and maybe play up.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
Yeah, there are a couple of girls. Both of them
have given given us a few minutes already at the
varsity level. Kayton Lee Master, Uh has given us some
really good minutes in the post. And then Uh, J C.
Jones is somebody that I look as as someone who
we really expect to improve throughout the course of this

(06:34):
season and hopefully you know, midway through this season on
a person that that we count on.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
Well, coach, I'll get I'll get one more here, and
I'll get you out of here. I know tomorrow you
mentioned Hunterton. That's a early in the season or not.
I know it's a really big game in the SVC standings,
really really good team. Uh, maybe talk to me a
little bit about that match up. A couple of keys
going into it for you.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Yeah, Well, again, I'm Snally Baker. You know, I think
the thing for her is, you know, she's good enough
that she's going to score. So the key when we
guard her is is making her work for everything that
she gets. Don't don't give a player like that easy bucket,
and and that just you know, that gives them confidence.

(07:20):
And and then they all of a sudden they have
thirty like she did in their opener against Pilicopy. So
you know, everything kind of starts with her. They have
a really good freshman Brayley Housewerth, who uh uh is
a really strong close player, does a lot of nice
things around the bucket. So you've got to make sure
we you know, we we know where she is and

(07:43):
and uh, you know, make things tough for her around
the glass. And then you know, the thing I'm always
impressed with Huntington is they, uh, the girls just know
what they're supposed to do. They know their roles, and
they play their roles and don't try to, you know,
do more than they should. And so you know, a
Tory Smith, Leah McCroskey, Ray Smith, they're gonna do what

(08:08):
they do and contribute to their team's success. So, uh,
we've got to execute offensively. And then like I said,
we're gonna make their best players, you know, work.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
Hard for what they get well coach. That's that's good stuff.
A big fan of yours you know that. Appreciate you
calling in, look forward to talking to each and every
Friday Night if possible, and best of luck throughout the year.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
Absolutely, thank you guys for all you do. We appreciate it.
