Speaker 1 (00:02):
Ah, yes, Yes, I get to hang with the A team.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Let's go.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
What's up? Eddie Garcia? How are you? Man?
Speaker 3 (00:09):
I'm good, Chris, how are you? I'm good.
Speaker 4 (00:11):
We we got to do this not too terribly long ago, right, yeah,
not too long ago? Okay, things when I get to
work the overnight. For you guys, it's your normal life, right,
this is your quote unquote nine to five. For me,
it involves a little bit of a shift. And I
was telling the rain of this before we hit the air.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Eddie.
Speaker 4 (00:30):
It's the first time I've got like a full nap
before the show, and some might even say that's a
full night's sleep.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
I got home at six o'clock Central time.
Speaker 4 (00:38):
I hit the DVR on everything that I would have
possibly watched, which was what'd.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
You say, Ady? Like one thing?
Speaker 4 (00:44):
Maybe little Dodgers Phillies, Maybe until some dude decides he
couldn't catch a fly ball in center field? Come on,
maybe a little bit of the were you one of
the Olympics tonight for the Team USA prep showdown with
Canada or no?
Speaker 3 (00:58):
No?
Speaker 2 (00:59):
I mean I know I've looked at the highways, I
know I know the Yeah, i know the backstory with
a change and the roster and all that.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
But no, I did not watch anything.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
Yeah, so I snoozed a bit. But as I have
typically done, Eddie, I slept through a couple of snoozes.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
So I got myself I could do it.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
I don't even know if you would call four hours
a nap like a night's sleep.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
I'm energized and ready to go, man, ready to go.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Well, as I have gotten older, I have found the
joy of napping and it is glorious. So, yeah, I
take a nap before I come into every shift, to
take an hour nap.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
Yeah, it helps astruendously.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
It's a refresher man.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
I got a couple of I don't know if you
want to call them different types of stories that we're
talking about tonight, But we got some unique angles as
we come to you Live from the Tirack dot Com studios,
because Eddie, we had a fight in the stands, and
I don't know if I've seen one that transpired like
(02:02):
this did. It was a much different world. But the
call on Fox tonight whenever Uruguay players went into the stands,
I don't necessarily want to say malice at the Palace esque,
but it was pretty.
Speaker 5 (02:19):
Close Uruguayan players going into the stands and interacting, if
you will, with Colombian supporters. You obviously see things being thrown,
including fists and punches and beverages and garbage and unfortunate
scenes in Charlotte that after the final whistle.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
H Now, I would imagine the Mallard Militia Eddie would
be on Cloud nine seeing me start with the soccer
matchup your calls at eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
But that was I mean, that was a good old
fashioned melee.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
Afterwards, I don't I think the call they had gone
back to the studio and I think they were surprised
by what they were watching. But listen, I'm not going
to say it was roun Our Test and Steven Jackson
thrown haymakers. But you had reserved players that went into
that part of the stands, into that part of the
arena and were basically because it was the family section, right,
(03:15):
It was where the families of both teams sat, and
they were just these two dudes came flying in throwing haymakers.
I thought it was it was on the verge of
getting pretty nasty.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
Well, Ben has always said the greatest night in his
history was the night of the Malice in the Palace.
He said he did a four hour show. I think
it was for maybe three He did his entire show
on it and said it was the greatest night he's
ever been had. Yes, yes, he has always said that.
So that's saying something. I mean, it's the closest thing
(03:47):
I can think of, because this was, you know, for
people who aren't following this, this is being played in
the United States. It was in that show, and so
I don't think you're out of balance for going there.
Unlike the Malice of the Palace, though, I think the
players had a legitimate reason to actually go into the stands.
They were trying to protect their family, so anybody can
understand that. But there is a Fox Sports Radio connection
(04:10):
to this. What because I.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
Think was it? I think it was earlier this week.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Brian no and Jeff Schwartz were filling in for the
Two Pros and a Cup of Joe show after this one,
and it was in Charlotte. The games in Charlotte, that's
where Jeff Schwartz is, and so he was saying he
thought he was going to go to the game. And
so when I found out about this, I immediately texted
Brian because I have his number. He did the show
(04:37):
last night with me, and I said, did Jeff go
to the game? And unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, Jeff decided
not to go to the game. He said it was
the tickets were just too pricey for somebody who didn't
really have a you know, big investment in it. He
wanted to go just because it was like, it's an event,
it's in my town. I normally wouldn't go, but let'tle
(04:58):
check into it. But I guess, I guess it was
too rich for his blood. He didn't end up going,
but we almost almost had somebody, a member of the
staff there at.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
We should have what Schwart's doing. He just got back
from an island vacation.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
I mean, come on, dude, get out there, watch some
I mean he's gambling on it, probably right, yes, of
course he is. He gimbles, He gimbles on everything. Yes,
by the way, quick, quick sidebar real quick. If you
guys haven't had a chance yet. Jeff Schwartz is the best.
He has a show, I think Saturday Sunday mornings. Here
you hear him filling in a lot with two pros
and a cup of Joe, as Eddie just mentioned, but
(05:31):
he has three Major League Baseball bets and he makes
every single night this season, Eddie, and he says it's
been profitable for him. He fades the Rockies, the White Sox,
and there's one other team and I don't know why
I'm not remembering it right now, and it's been profitable
for him this year.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
But that's our guy.
Speaker 4 (05:48):
I mean, he's got a bet on every three at
least on every single baseball game so far this season.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
That is commitment to the craft.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
But he was not in the stands tonight, where As
it was described from the Associated Press report, about a
dozen Yuruguay teammates along with Darwin Nunez went into the
stands at bak of America Stadium following the loss. Now
the in kudos to some of you videographers with the
(06:16):
in stands. Now, I'm not sitting here by any means
wanting to try to promote or celebrate a fight in
the stands. But some of the videography was great. Others
we still haven't learned landscape mode. I mean, I don't
know how many years we got to do this, but unfortunately,
I don't think we're going to be on the verge
from this tonight, Eddie in having a show that is
driven four hours by is soccer out of control? Would
(06:39):
you go into the stands to fight for your family?
Are crowds out of control? Eight seven seven ninety nine
on Fox. I don't know if we have ourselves a
malice in the palace kind of a night looming here.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
I would go on records saying we don't. I think
you're safe going on record of saying no. But uh,
you know it was I think it was worth it
was worth mentioning for sure. And as I said, I
did think immediately when I found out about this, did
Jeff Schortz.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Going Yeah, he did not, he had gone that would
have been a better a little.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
Bit of a difficult.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
It got me thinking this year, we've had a lot
of conversations about fans on the court, fans on the
field now obviously, and you might say, by you kind
of reach in here, Plank if you're trying to pull
this out tonight, and I'd say, listen, man, we got
(07:31):
a four hour show in the middle of the night,
and the malor militia will turn on you rather quickly.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
So I'm going to take whatever's out there content wise, baby, But.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
I see something like this happen and I think it
could have been worse, right, I think that could have
been really, really bad. And for the most part, security
did a really good job. And I think sometimes we
think every single security person that works a ballgame is
like the dude on the right arm of Jerry Jones.
You know, that's super the Ronnie mund of security. They
(08:01):
they're wearing a coat and time. Most of them are.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
We talked about a great security guard last night, Brian
the the security guard for MESSI have you seen have
you seen him on that?
Speaker 3 (08:12):
Yeah, he's something else, hardcore.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
I ain't messing with him at all.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
But my point is a majority of the people that
are security are not those dudes.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
Right, they're huge, are.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
No, they're and they're not getting paid to stick their
nose in there and you know, get their risk their health.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
So this just was a good reminder that a security
can do a good job. And I thought they did
a good job tonight, and b even though this was
something that resulted from actions on the field, I still
think we need to constantly be evaluating and reevaluating those
types of stories. Since I I did did we get
too carried away with the Caitlin Clark court storming debates
(08:51):
that we had on this show whenever she got hurt.
And then when Kyle Philipowski apparently he was on his
deathbed by the way, that John Shire came racing out
to protect as Duke's starr, and then he ended up
having a double double the very next game, the very nice,
very next night out. But I tell you something, dude,
I'm constantly I see something like this and I think
(09:13):
we still have a problem because things like that are
gonna get even more out of hand. I think in
this new era of college football, right you've got Oklahoma
and Texas going to the SEC. You've got big twelve
games that could be for playoff positioning or knocking teams
out of the playoff acc as well. I feel like
there's going to be juiced energy. I feel like constant
(09:33):
juice energy when it comes to college football and beyond.
So to me, while yes, this was a soccer fight
in the stands, it kind of got my mind thinking, Eddie,
we still got to be careful because it's just a
matter of time before somebody really gets hurt in these
types of situations. Either it's a fan that spouts off
too much, gets knocked out, gets trampled. I don't know,
(09:54):
I've been in the middle of it all, but I
still feel this as a reminder that, you know, we're
at some point a crossroads when it comes to how
we're going to handle these types of situations going forward,
especially whenever you just see a crowded storm in the
court after a big win.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
Well, I mean I I will say this one of
my most favorite memories as a sports fan was the
one and only time I ran on the football field
after my beloved Fresno State Bulldogs upset Oregon State at
Bulldog Stadium. Sports Illustrated ranked them number one in the preseason. Now,
they weren't number one, uh you know, in the ap
(10:29):
pole or what it was, but that was that was
you know, they were like top five. They remember a
guy named Ken Simonson was a running back, and I think,
I think.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
Man, you're you're dealing with a college football nerve.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
I think Jonathan Smith, the former head coach who just left,
I think was the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
Anyway, Uh, they didn't.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
Turn out to be that good, but it was all
said and done, but we ran onto the field and
we tore down the gold post, the only time I've
ever remember that happening, and certainly on the time when
I was there.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
So that was really awesome.
Speaker 2 (10:59):
And and I know, no, you know, I know that
people can't get hurt doing these things, but I thought,
I mean, let people have fun. I know, people can
get hurt doing anything. I I I'm against outlawing, the
storming of the court and running out of the field
and all eat stuff. So I get wanting to have
things be as safe as possible. But I'm also somebody
(11:20):
who you know, goes to a lot of games, you know,
Charger season ticket holder thanks to my wife, and I
go to several LA Kings games a year as well.
And you know, we see these videos all the time now,
these fights in the stands, and and I know some
people think it's great. I personally could go without ever
seeing one of those again. And I don't know if
(11:40):
it if it's a thing where they're it's more prevalent now,
or if it's just the cell phone thing and everybody
posts it everywhere. But yeah, I mean I see both
sides of it. I think that there's room for fans
being fans and sometimes maybe doing you know, things that
they shouldn't do going on the court or whatever. But
at the same time, you want people to be safe.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
You want that.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
I mean, you know, the worst thing you do is
go to a sporting that we want to have a
good time and you end up getting hurt, you know.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
So yeah, yeah, I mean I see both sides of it.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
You know what's funny, Eddie as we roll on here
on a gosh, what is it?
Speaker 1 (12:13):
A Wednesday?
Speaker 4 (12:13):
Nine into a Thursday on Fox Sports Radio Live from
the tyrack dot Com studios.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
Coops here, Lorrain is here.
Speaker 4 (12:19):
Eddie's gonna be on updates and basically running this thing tonight.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
I'm just along for the ride.
Speaker 4 (12:25):
My mind works in thinking about college football and taking
it back to football.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Right.
Speaker 4 (12:30):
But when you brought up going as a fan and
you see these types of situations take place again, this
is very unique, but it makes you think of the
broader picture from the soccer match tonight, I think we
do have just a fan behavior situation we need to
think about.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
I think a lot of it is alcohol field.
Speaker 4 (12:48):
I'm not here to judge, baby, trust me, I've been
as angry as anybody when it comes the way my
team plays I mean, I'm a Raiders fan for goodness sakes.
If we win anything, I might charge the field and celebrate.
Has an NFL team ever had fit and storm the
field after winning?
Speaker 1 (13:01):
That might be me.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
If the Raiders ever win anything, me and Jason fits
on each side of the goalpost trying to bring it down.
But my point is, you know, it's it's unfortunate, but
when you go to a sporting event, you you aren't
surprised when you see something like this. And again, I
don't know if it's if it's something worth diving deeper into,
if there is more steps and precautions that need to
(13:24):
be taken, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
But on what was a.
Speaker 4 (13:28):
Light night of sports, Yanks got back on track. Dodger
still stink, at least when they play good teams. And
we got a couple of NFL notes because the Giants
off season show has been fantastic so far on hard knocks,
but I think he just pulls back like oh man,
we got a we got a story tonight about another
brawl in the stands now, this one again very unique.
(13:48):
But are are we working towards more issues, especially as
we get closer to the NFL season a new era
of college football? All right, eight seven, seven ninety nine
on Fox eight seven seven nine ninety six six three
sixth night when we come back. I know you guys
talked a lot about the Mike Gundy story last night,
and understandably so. But I've got I'm in Oklahoma. I've
(14:11):
covered Mike his whole career. I'm not going to try
to tell you this is how you're supposed to think
about it, but I think I've got a bit of
a unique perspective on and I'll share you what I
thought of his comments yesterday at Big twelve Media Day.
Speaker 6 (14:24):
Coming up in just a bit, be sure to catch
live editions of The Ben Meller Show weekdays at two

Speaker 7 (14:41):
But instead of us telling you how great we are,
here's how Dan Patrick described us when he came on
our show.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
Quick, knowledgeable and funny, opinionated.
Speaker 7 (14:50):
You don't interrupting our promo, Yeah, he wasn't talking about you.
Speaker 6 (14:54):
You took those clips totally of context.
Speaker 7 (14:57):
Oh yeah, well after this promo, I'm gonna take you
out and beat you.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
Let me put this into context. Shut up.
Speaker 7 (15:04):
Yeah, anyway, just listen to the Folly and Toni Fusco

(15:32):
your news guy, You're announcer guy. I'm at Eddie on
Fox Now. Put my stick right in your mouth. I mean,
you know it's extreme, but if I have to, I will.
At Li from the tyrack dot Com Fox Sports Radio Studios,
it's Chris Plank.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
Good time.
Speaker 4 (15:47):
I think we're off to a good start. Eddie A
mixed bag off Twitter so far. Shout out to my
guy Shane and de Moye hashtag Malard militia All night long,
late night drug tester rights. To problem with the in
the stands is the game was in the United States.
If the KOPA tournament was in South America, I'm sure,
I'm sure that there would have been some Colombian people
(16:10):
that would have kept the Uruguay players out.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
I don't know if I don't know if throwing around the.
Speaker 4 (16:14):
Cartel claim would be a smart thing here late at night,
late night drug tester, but I'm here for you. Then
there was this from Art puffin somewhat unorthodox to hear
you on without Arnie and his awful sports takes. I'm
gonna tell you right now, it's so refreshing. It really is, because, Wow,
I know I'm not gonna have someone that tells me
(16:36):
every well. I mean, we're all to only twenty four
minutes in, but every single thing I bring up is stupid,
even though it's from his list of topics that he
wanted to meet a b And.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
Why would you want to talk about that?
Speaker 4 (16:47):
Could you put it on our list of things you
wanted to talk about?
Speaker 3 (16:49):
Arnie?
Speaker 4 (16:50):
I don't know, but Art Rights, speaking of naps, I
always take one between the instant trivia and the malar riddle.
But I gotta say the Uruguay soccer ball story was
nap inducing. I listen, when you're throwing hands in the stands,
I feel like that's a story we're talking about, Eddie.
(17:10):
When we see brawls. You want me to break down
Greg Burralter's exit from Team USA. I mean, come on, baby,
we got hands being thrown, Eddie, we got families being
defended and protected here.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
I support your decision, nature boy.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
I say let the fans store up three two. I say,
let the fans storm the court and put them in
a cage match. Don't forget to charge a pay per
view fee.
Speaker 1 (17:36):
I kind of like that.
Speaker 4 (17:37):
Just you know what, open rain, Yeah, just let him go.
And then but see, here's the thing. There's always gonna
be someone that's gonna sue. That always happens, right, That
always somebody has their eye on a payday. So that's
where you gotta be careful if you put that in
a cage. As far as off the field fights, all right,
eight seven to seven ninety nine on Fox, Uh hollering, James,
(17:59):
hanging there, I'm gonna get you right after Eddie's update
and as well phone calls throughout the night. Here on
the Ben Malor Show, I'm Chris Plank sitting in with
Eddie Garcia from the tire rack dot Com Studios. Eddie,
let let's just jump right into the deep end. Where
did you come on the Mike Gundy comments? Where did
you fall out? From?
Speaker 1 (18:14):
What he said?
Speaker 4 (18:15):
Now? I keep saying yesterday, but this was Tuesday at
Big twelve many days, which is taking place in Vegas.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
I thought it was certainly a bad look, I thought,
and I mentioned this last night with Brian. Like some
of the first things he commented, at least the SoundBite
we played, he talked about what was best for the
player and talked about him being a father, and I
just thought, if that's where you're kind of opening up with,
I don't think it's best for the player to get
(18:45):
a free pass on something that's really, you know, dangerous
and stupid. I'm not saying you need to be kicked
off the team, and I know he's an excellent player,
but suspending him for the first game, which is against
the No name team, is you know, that's not I don't.
I think that's out of the question. And then you know,
if this were one of his kids, he wouldn't punish
(19:06):
them forgetting a dy. He'd just let it go. So
just kind of off the cuff from that, That's kind
of where I took it.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
Here's what I'll say.
Speaker 4 (19:14):
It was a four minute and twenty twenty eight second answer, Eddie. Now,
can I get away with playing that on my local
show where we talk about nothing but college football and
I live in the state of Oklahoma? Yes, I think
on the national stage you want to talk about a
group turning on you, the pitchforks would be out if
(19:34):
I tried to break out a four and a half
minute SoundBite. But here's here's what happened. Here's I think
Mike talk too long. I think that's what happened. And
he tried to over explain himself, which is something Mike
Gundy has consistently done. I don't have to go back
and give you too much history here. I'm a man,
I'm forty after he was mad that a columnist wrote
a story about and I don't know if many of
(19:55):
you guys know this or not, but about his starting
quarterback having his mom fee him food after the game.
And so my Gundy William's. Yes, yes, it was Bobby
Reid and it was pre Caleb Williams and Jenny Carlson
wrote the article and it was kind of a shot
about how they had just lost I think it was
Detroit and so she was mom was feeding chicken fingers
(20:18):
and I think everybody like, what the hell is going
on here? And when she wrote about it, that set
Gundy off and he didn't talk to the media for
a while. And then they beat Oklahoma when Tyreek Hill
had a punt return for a touchdown that shouldn't have
been not by his fault or Oshu's fault, by Oklhoma
making the decision to repunt, and from that point forward,
(20:42):
and he's kind of like he changed. In other words,
Mike Gundy went from a stand offish guy with the
media to someone that finally realized he can say whatever
he wants and it doesn't matter. He's not going to
get fired. He's going to be able to coach there
until he retires, okay. And thirdly, he's he's got the
support I think of a majority of the fan base.
(21:02):
So when it came out this week that Mike Gundhy
was not suspending Ali Gordon for his duy arrest. This
was the SoundBite that made the rounds from Big twelve
media days.
Speaker 8 (21:13):
So I looked it up on my phone. What would
be the legal limit like in Oklahoma's point eight and
Ollie was point one. So I looked it up and
it was based on body weight, not to get into
the legal side of it, but I thought, really, two
or three beers or four I'm not justifying what all
he did. I'm telling you what decision I made. Well,
(21:35):
I thought I've probably done that a thousand times in
my life, and I'm you know, it's just fine.
Speaker 4 (21:40):
So my Gundhy came out and tried to tried, tried
to say I made my decision and everyone makes bad decisions.
But what it came out right there, right Eddie, is
hey man, we've all been like driving when we're one
(22:01):
point zer or point nine blowing on the bac. Ay're like, buddy,
I don't know if I'd be out there making that
something public.
Speaker 3 (22:08):
Right.
Speaker 4 (22:09):
That's if you clip that, which everyone did and it
made its rounds, you can try to defend it. You
can try to say no, no, no, I was talking
about mistakes in general. But when you hear that Eddie,
it's obvious that that seemed to be specific to drinking
and driving, right that comment. Yes, So if you just
(22:30):
take the last oh maybe fifteen seconds of Mike Gundy's quote,
you get what I think he really meant to say.
Because the problem is I said, he just talked too long.
If the part that made part listen to me, if
the section of this video or this comment that made
(22:50):
the rounds was let's see right around here and.
Speaker 8 (22:55):
From this point moving forward, he needs to try to
do better like we all do. And the one thing
that I would say to people is just be cautious
about judging unless you've never put yourself in that situation,
all right, And I think that if you look at
it that way and understand, hey, Olli, you're lucky. You
(23:15):
could have done something that affects you and somebody else
and their families for the rest of their life. And
I really believe all he feels that way. All he's
a great person that made a mistake, Eddie.
Speaker 4 (23:26):
If that's the twenty seconds that makes the rounds, it
sounds a lot different than Ah, you know, who hasn't
driven around with a point nine blood alcohol content.
Speaker 1 (23:36):
I thought that was the part that made a lot
more sense for my gunny.
Speaker 4 (23:39):
But that's him.
Speaker 2 (23:40):
I don't I mean, I don't disagree, but he did
say what he said. I mean, there's no absolutely, you know,
putting your back in the bottle. And I don't know
that even in the context of him saying what you
just played right, him saying, well, we've all made mistakes
in that, in the way he said it, I don't
think that's that's not really the right message he's supposed
(24:00):
to be saying as the leader of this football program
and the guy who's supposed to be kind of setting
the example for his players. And that's all that stuff.
I know, and and and I I know Brady Quinn talked,
we talked about this on the show after after this
one yesterday and then Brady Quinn and maybe this goes
back to the thing you were talking about feeding the
you know, I'm a man on forty. Is this him,
(24:22):
you know, taking the heat off of the player by
or or sending a message with players, I've got your bat, guys,
No matter what is he thinking that big or is
or is he not that you know, is he not
that far far thinking?
Speaker 4 (24:36):
If you know what I'm saying, I think he has
become an expert in taking the heat off of his players.
But I don't know if it's always purposeful. I don't
know if he goes into it and said, I'm going
to say something here that is going to shift the
whole focus from Ali Gordon and the fact that he's
playing after getting a DUI. Where I stand and listen,
(24:59):
we got a couple decisions. There's an Oklahoma star wide
receiver this offseason, Eddie. They got popped for a DUI,
Deon Burks, and he might be the best receiver they
have on their roster this year. And Oklahoma's bren Vinnibles
is gonna get asked about that next week at SEC
Media Days. Right, there's other players across college football that
there's decisions to be made with off season violations, law
(25:23):
breaking the law, breaking the rules. I think if you
get a DUI, I think you should be suspended. I
think that should be the bear man. You're gonna miss
a game. I don't care if it's all it's a team,
that doesn't matter. We didn't give him the ball to
the fourth game. I don't care. You don't play, And
that's part of the life lesson that there are things
and decisions that when you make them, there's true real
world response repercussions from it. I felt like this took
(25:47):
away from those real world repercussion. It's like, oh, you
punished him. You made him fly a private jet to
Las Vegas to answer questions about it all day long, right,
what a punishment. But I do think Mike Gundhy has
been fantastic and shielding his players Eddie. I don't know
if it's always purposeful though when he does, and I
think sometimes it's just oh I said that, all right, Well,
(26:07):
I guess we'll roll with it.
Speaker 2 (26:09):
It is interesting how bulletproof he seems to be with
Tom that program. I mean, they're they're always good, but
they're never great. Is that fair to say?
Speaker 1 (26:17):
Okay, spot on that spot on?
Speaker 2 (26:20):
Well, I mean, which makes me wonder why is he
so bulle I know he played there, and I guess
he's well liked, but sure, you know, we've seen better
coaches than him get fired because programs weren't living up
to what boosters think they should, you know, be at
and uh, I don't know. Was Old t Boone just
that big of a fan of his? And he has
(26:40):
a lifetime contract I don't know, you know better than me.
Speaker 4 (26:44):
I think I think you're right. I think that he
realized at one point that if he was going to
get fired, he was going to go get a better job.
In his mind, I think you saw him as a
candidate Tennessee in Arkansas. I think he could have had
both those jobs if he wanted him. And I think
from that point four he just reached this point where
out By reached this. At some point in my life,
I'm like, you know what, if these guys fire me,
(27:05):
I got a job right there waiting for me. And
you know what else, There's enough money in the bank
to where I don't even need this job or that job,
but I can do it and do it how I want.
And I think that's my Gundy, and I think that's
the mindset he has right now. Got a chance me
pretty good this year. It's an old football team and
a conference that we still don't really know it's identity.
But is it still subject to change?
Speaker 1 (27:28):
Guys?
Speaker 4 (27:29):
The conversation of conference realignment reared its ugly head yet
again today.
Speaker 6 (27:34):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Ben Mellor
Show weekdays at two am Eastern eleven pm Pacific.
Speaker 4 (27:40):
How has been handling the success of the WNBA. Is
it a topic in the four hours of the Mallar Show.
Speaker 2 (27:47):
No, no, it's not other than me giving the scores
and him giving me a crap about it.
Speaker 3 (27:55):
Oh that's yeah, it's about it.
Speaker 1 (27:58):
I gotta admit having a hard time.
Speaker 4 (28:02):
Do I get sucked into some of the early debate
shows every now and then? Sure, because well, Eddie, you
work in the morning too, You work throughout the night.
In the morning, it's usually the only thing on right.
You got a choice between watching like Steven A yelled
to TV or Nick Right yelled at TV. Though I'm
starting to like Nick Wright quite a bit. My point
(28:23):
is we get these debate shows right in front of
our face. I don't even have the energy to lock
in on the debate show topics, and it seems like
people are engaging in it.
Speaker 1 (28:32):
So I guess what Am I on team Ben Maller
on that one then?
Speaker 2 (28:35):
Or no?
Speaker 4 (28:36):
Because I'm here for it. But I don't want to
fight about Eddie's update is perfect for me. If Kaitlyn
Clark scored a bunch of points, that's awesome. Do I
feel like we need to have a fight about Angel
Reese and Caitlin Clarks Rookie of the Year. I don't
know if I'm quite there yet mentally is a sports fan.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
Eddie, Yeah, I'm very perplexed about the WNBA stuff.
Speaker 3 (28:56):
To be honest with you, I don't.
Speaker 2 (28:59):
Obviously, I'm sleeping after this show, so all I know.
And frankly, no disrespect to any other shows on the network.
They're all wonderful, but I get, you know, seven hours
of sports talk radio at my job. I don't need
it when I'm driving around in the car or at
home doing some chores, so I get plenty of that.
(29:19):
So I don't know what other shows are talking about
other than the promos we play on the network, and
I know that not everybody hears those, but we hear them.
That's you know here the network, and I'm astounded by
the amount of WNBA talk, and you know, look, I'll
be I'll full disclosure. I was told that I have
to give Caitlin Clark scores, so otherwise I wouldn't do it, frankly,
(29:44):
unless it was something you know that she did was
some spectacular thing, and that's fine. I know that's not
there are other decisions made that are above me and
I do my I do what I'm supposed to do.
If that's what they want them, that's what they're going
to get. But I just I'm totally perplexed at the
the sudden success, supposedly of the WNBA. I don't, I don't.
(30:09):
I don't get it at all. And it's nothing against
Kaitlyn Clerk. She seems like she's a great player, a
great person all that, But why now and her were like, suddenly,
this is now a great thing we have to pay
attention to.
Speaker 3 (30:23):
I don't. I don't understand it at all.
Speaker 4 (30:24):
Well, and here's the funny part. All these people that
clowned it and couldn't care less about suddenly acting like
they care overly is the part that gets me. I
equate this a lot to my frustration. Holler and James
hanging out. I'll get you right off to the break.
How much don't worry about him? Oh okay, okay, cold good.
I had a problem very early on when the thunder
(30:46):
came to Oklahoma City, because Eddie, I'm just hitting all
of your big topics here. I love talking about the
NBA in the early two thousands and twenty ten. I mean,
it's I still love talking about the NBA, but it
was a backlash.
Speaker 1 (31:01):
Well, if I were to try to have.
Speaker 4 (31:03):
A segment here tonight and open up the phones to
talk Caitlin Clark, Angel rees, who do you guys have
in your Rookie of the Year ballotying eight seventy eight
seven seven ninety nine one fox, But I would get
all kinds of pushback. It's like, no one cares about
the NBA around here. You stop it, Quit cramming that
down my throat. Then as soon as they get a team,
everybody's an expert, like, you know, we need to use
(31:24):
our bird rides on this guy.
Speaker 1 (31:26):
Yeah, gotta get this guy out of here.
Speaker 4 (31:28):
All these different experts suddenly pop out when they hated
everything about the NBA. That's where I always get my
biggest laugh is when people had clowned something.
Speaker 1 (31:39):
And it's like if Ben tried to.
Speaker 4 (31:41):
Come in here and be an expert on what the
Aces are doing with their lineup right, or how Caitlin
Clark is not, you'd be like, what the heck is this?
I don't like whenever people pretend to like something that
they honestly and obviously don't. So that's that's where I
get my biggest kick out of this whole process. Suddenly
everybody is a WNBA expert. All right, A quick break
(32:03):
to the text to the phones next eight seven seven
ninety nine on Fox eight seven seven nine ninety six
six three six nine. I do want to pay off
my t's too when we come back, because I think
there's still an appetite for conference realignment in college football,
and I think it could affect two national championship contenders.
We'll dive into it next right here on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (32:55):
It's Chris plank, Eddie.
Speaker 4 (32:57):
I know it's looking back a while and this is
kind of frowned upon, but uh, this is now a
week removed from Fourth of July. Did you have any
big Fourth of July celebrations?
Speaker 1 (33:06):
Did you work?
Speaker 3 (33:07):
I did?
Speaker 2 (33:08):
Not, good for you, but I took I took the
day after fourth of July off.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
It's kind of weird, you know, for us.
Speaker 2 (33:15):
I mean, technically I took the fourth off because that's
how our schedule is, because we start at anyway. Yeah,
if I if I have the chance to take a
holiday off and have it extend to like a three
day weekend type of thing, I definitely.
Speaker 3 (33:30):
Prefer to do that, right, I agree. So I agree.
Speaker 2 (33:33):
In case there are we're going to be any uh
any big partying or plans, I'm not gonna have to
go to work after those plans, right.
Speaker 3 (33:40):
So that's that's how I look at it.
Speaker 4 (33:42):
That's the way you're thinking, like it's number one on
my depth chart of holidays for some reason.
Speaker 1 (33:46):
It's Yeah, it's everything I love.
Speaker 4 (33:48):
It's beer, it's broads, it's hot dogs, it's it's burgers.
Though I will say I'm definitely getting old, Addie. I'm
definitely getting older.
Speaker 3 (33:55):
Aren't we all?
Speaker 1 (33:55):
He coopy it like I hurt for two days.
Speaker 4 (33:59):
I didn't drink. I hurt for two days and I
didn't drink. Wait a minute, it's like.
Speaker 3 (34:06):
How are you hurting from food?
Speaker 1 (34:07):
I ate too? It was I think it was two
days too much. Now again I will.
Speaker 3 (34:14):
Why do you like take a week off after Thanksgiving?
Speaker 4 (34:16):
That's what it seems. I probably need to do that
now is I've been in pain. It took me a while.
Whenever I have stomach pains, my dad would always take
like Tom's my wife. So I grew up where you
just say, if you don't feel you toms, you need toms?
What's going on with your stomach? And my wife is
big on.
Speaker 1 (34:33):
Like charcoal pills.
Speaker 4 (34:34):
I guess that's fancy. I set a record for taking
charcoal pills the last three days. But it was it
was something else, so I blamed the chef, though unfortunately
the chef was me. I was either a overserved or
maybe Eddie I had something undercooked. Right, this is over.
This is gluttony at its max, is what I think
it is. I don't think I could blame any preparation
(34:57):
on this one, that's for certain.
Speaker 2 (34:59):
Well, I don't know what the fire works are like
where you live, but here in La it is something else, man,
it is. I mean, the illegal fireworks that are fired
off in La County is ridiculous. I mean it's just
a show in and of itself. I mean, I live
on top of a hill of sorts and we'll just
(35:20):
walk a few blocks to where we have kind of
a clear view, and we're just watching fireworks going off everywhere,
and it sounds like a war zone for hours and hours.
Speaker 4 (35:31):
Yeah, I do bring up the fact that it's my
favorite holiday and that it was a week ago. To
go ahead and magnify this. It was a week ago.
You can stop shooting off your fireworks now. Okay, celebrations
over America is good. I think happy Birthday and all,
(35:52):
but listen, we're not a twelve year old kid. We
don't need to celebrate this birthday for a week. So
stop stupid late night fireworks, even though for us it
starts before the fourth too.
Speaker 1 (36:02):
Oh it's in really okay, it's over. Stop it. There's
no there's no tailgating for firework shows, Lorena.
Speaker 9 (36:07):
I just can't say you can't pregame not only the
night before where fireworks going crazy at like three o'clock
the night of fourth of July. I came to work
early and I drove to the top of our parking structure.
Oh nice, because we have a beautiful view of the
skyline over La and if you looked over, it was
nothing but just a wall of fireworks. Like Eddie said,
(36:30):
illegal fireworks out the wazoo. None of these were official
firework shows. People just they just got them in their backyards.
Speaker 4 (36:37):
Do you know how expensive that is, by the way, yes, well.
Speaker 3 (36:41):
We the Mexican border is not too fat from us, so.
Speaker 2 (36:46):
Yeah, yeah, they're making trips down there at something just on.
Speaker 9 (36:50):
People go to Washington for that, and so that's more
expensive up there, but Mexico, yeah, you can get a
lot cheaper.
Speaker 6 (36:55):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (36:56):
There was one time within the last couple of years
somehow I screwed up and I ended up having to
come in on the night of the fourth and I
had a firework show on my entire drive in.
Speaker 6 (37:06):
It's beautiful.
Speaker 9 (37:06):
I didn't mind it at all.
Speaker 3 (37:09):
Yeah, it was nice.
Speaker 4 (37:09):
There's a point though, when it's over. Yeah, well he
removed it's over. You want to pull the band ind
off here, boys, let's let's see if Holler and James
is awake to kick things off tonight here on the
Ben Mallard Show. Holler and James, you got a minute.
Speaker 1 (37:25):
What's going on buddy.
Speaker 10 (37:27):
To talk about? Are you there?
Speaker 1 (37:29):
I'm here, James, how are you?
Speaker 10 (37:31):
And you know what? Sharon Claracter was good. But there
was one basketball player that I come to mind with
Maya Moore, she won championships. I met someone that was
a shoeshine man named Lee who knew her father. Maya
Moore's father should go fishing with him. Talk about day
these performers and athletes to call fanatics to fans, that's
(37:57):
a fanatics. Okay, that's such short of all just fan Okay,
check this out. Rick Ja's got a letter thrown at him.
Knw'm beating myself at a concert. He wasn't get his
bouchers and his body guards jumped off State and they
beat the crap out of the sky.
Speaker 1 (38:14):
That's what I'm telling you.
Speaker 4 (38:15):
Hollering James, you got to get the good security to
take care of you.
Speaker 1 (38:20):
The good security
