Well, that's right, you heard the man the Ben Mallar Show,

We'll help you get there an unmatched selection, fast free shipping,
free road asser protection, and over ten thousand recommended installers.
(00:49):
Tyrec dot com the way tire buying should be. You know,
it looks like Bill Belichick is gonna find his way
back into the National Football League. He might even have
a choice, but he's not the only one. It's turning out.
They say there may be as many as seven openings
(01:12):
come January, but there's perhaps lining up what you would
call almost the star studied twenty twenty five NFL head
coach candidate list. Right, the Bears were talking about it
earlier or not the Bears, but people were talking about
the Bears. What do they do? Do they get Ben Johnson,
the stud star offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions. I
(01:39):
don't know. See, do you really want a coach learning
on the job, a new head coach learning on the
job while you're trying to produce results in a white
hot intensity of a thousand suns like the Chicago Bears
and Caleb Williams in a highly charged situation. It's one
thing to be an offensive coordinator, you're the head coach
of the offense. One thing to be a defensive coordinator,
(01:59):
your head coach the defense. But when you become a
head coach, you're a CEO and you are taking on
an entirely different responsibility. Now, we've already had two teams,
the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints. They've already
fired their head coaches, and you can be sure they
won't be the last teams to make a change at
the top. This is shaping up to be one of those.
(02:20):
They're calling it a star studded hiring cycle. Because you've
got a mix of proven candidates, you got up and
coming talent, and that's going to have ownership groups maybe
acting a little bit more aggressively if you think the
grasses agreement with coaches on the market, it's let's start
at the top of the list. He might have competition though,
Bill Belichick. He's got six Super Bowl victories, and remember
(02:44):
he won two with Bill Parcells as his assistant defensive
coordinator with the Giants, and he wants one more gig.
He's had a twenty four year run with the New
England Patriots, and he's already got a few of his
top cronies that are preparing to join him. So Belichick
does get another job as staff could look very familiar now.
He turns seventy three in four months, but he only
(03:05):
needs fifteen wins to break Don Chule's all time record.
He might be the perfect Kennedy for a team that
has a talented roster but needs a new voice. Now
they keep pegging the Dallas Cowboys is an obvious fit.
I don't think it's an obvious fit. I don't think
Jerry Jones wants to give up that much air in
the room. And now He's even talking about bringing back
(03:26):
Barney Rubble. Mike McCarthy, you know, because he's a yes man.
Wherever Belichick goes, the timetable is going to be paramount
for both sides because Belichick is not going to want
to take over full rebuild, and the organization would have
to be comfortable knowing he's only going to be there
maybe three years, maybe four. So the question is how
(03:47):
much must Belichick covered personnel control like you did with
New England Because the Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and said
numerous times he'll never hire a general manager and he's
got guy named Will McLay and he's not going to
really diminish his role. So Belichick might be okay with
that structure because it's been there for so long, but
the Cowboys could end up sticking with Mike McCarthy are
(04:08):
going in another direction. So what does Belichick do? I
don't know. He's gonna and he Eulse's gonna have competition
because Mike Vrabel he did I thought an outstanding job
in Tennessee fifty four and forty five and six seasons
with the Tennessee Titans before he was fired at the
end of the season last year, and I thought it
was a little bit surprising that Verbel who's actually now
(04:31):
he has a job, a job I said it and
quotes with the Cleveland Browns as a coaching personnel assistant.
A lot of folks thought he would land a job
this past hiring cycle, you know, ten months ago, so
he's expected to get a strong look this time around.
This is also a guy who played in the NFL.
He was a linebacker and a good one and won
Super Bowls. He has kind of this no nonsense approach
(04:54):
that players love. And when the Titans are at their best,
they were very physically imposing, they were disciplined, they fundamentally sound.
Why because they took on the personality of their field general,
which is Mike Grabel. He's more of a throwback, but
he can relate to players because he performed at a
high level during his own career. And I will tell
you the football is one sport where they really respect that,
(05:15):
and Rabel will establish his strong culture. I believe Mike
Grabel will be a high priority candidate for a roster
that's built to win. Now, some might say that Bears
could be They have a lot of talent on paper.
I don't know, and this is not a first barbecue.
He's coached a hundred games in the NFL. And then,
believe it or not, Mike McCarthy, even though he's on
an expiring contract with the Dallas Cowboys, which naturally makes
(05:38):
him a free agent, but the Cowboys badly underperforming. I
know they've won a couple in a row now, but
come on, really, it might be time for the two
sides to go in different directions. I can't imagine, with
all the respect to Mike McCarthy, why the hell Jerry
would stay with him if he really wants to win
another Super Bowl at eighty two years old, Why would
(05:59):
you stick a Mike McCarthy. You know what you got there.
He's not going to win you one. But he did
coach the Packers for thirteen years before coming to the
Cowboys for five years. And he may not be on
any short lists, but believe it or not, he's more
regarded in NFL circles than people realize. Some of even
theorized Mike McCarthy could perhaps be on the Jets list
(06:21):
because of his history with Aaron Rodgers, but that presumes
Aaron Rodgers is back next year, which I do not
believe he will be. I don't think he just want
it back. I thought his press conference he utterer there
if you want, I wasn't excuse me what a press
conference he was on with Pat McAfee. I don't know, though,
I just I can't see McCarthy really handling the pressure
of the New York spotlight. And he's not. You know,
(06:43):
Rex Ryan has entered the mix, He's entered the fray.
He's been politicking for that job for a while. So
you know what, give Rex Ryan his day in court?
Speaker 4 (06:53):
Right?
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Why not Brian Flores? Now this is an interesting one
because Brian Floor I thought did a little bit better
job in Miami as our head coach. They got credit
for that. They were competitive with him. I think he
had an issue with Tua. Flores is an incredibly smart
football mind. He's a natural leader, can come on like
(07:14):
thirty yards of garlic. From what I understand, that happens
sometimes when football things got away from him in Miami.
He says he softened his approach. He might be ready
for a second chance. But there's a caveat here. It's
unclear if an owner would hire Brian Flores after his
lawsuit accuse the NFL of racial discrimination, but he is
a defensive mastermind. He's at least worked himself back into
(07:36):
the conversation. He's having a phenomenal season as a defensive
coordinator of the Vikings, right, but teams will have to
be convinced that Flores learned from his time in Miami,
most importantly, most notably, how he handled the situation with
tuatago a law. Then there's Steve Spagnolo. Now Spagnolo has
(07:59):
been he's been a head coach in the NFL, but
he hasn't been in for fourteen years. He had a
three year run with the Rams. He's an excellent defensive coordinator.
He has worked wonders with the Chiefs defense. Possible as
time has passed, it's also possible he could be perfectly
happy remaining as the architect of the Chiefs defense, considering
(08:22):
they're going to be in the Super Bowl. Conversation for
the foreseeable future. He has a couple of things going
for him. Very strong communicator, great personality, gets the best
out of as players, been well respected as a defensive
coach for twenty years. And one of the things Spaganella
might have going for him is teams will look at
Dan Quinn in his early success with the Washington Commanders,
(08:44):
and there's a parallel because Quinn was a defensive coordinator,
had success with the Falcons, got the Falcons of the
Super Bowl. Remember they blew that twenty eight to three
lead against the Patriots seven years ago. So Spagnol's kind
of a comparative, comparable example as the proverbial second time
head coach who can eject professional mentality into the building.
(09:07):
We shall see. Then there's Cliff Kingsbury. The people they
love to hate him. I also think he won the
Ryan Gosling lookalike contest. From the best I can best
I can see, the Washington Commanders have an offensive coordinator
and his name is Cliff Kingsbury. He's back in the spotlight,
and Jayden Daniels has had an impressive start. And I
(09:28):
know the people are chirping around ankles now because they
say that Kingsbury's offenses have a tennesseey fade in the
second half. And maybe they have right, And I would
say that, you know, there's there's some merit to that.
It's it's born itself out. He had kind of a
topsy turvy four year run as the Cardinals head coach,
he was criticized for lack of offensive adjustments and says
(09:49):
he's in progressed and those I think are what people
are going to remember most unfortunately, and in both cases
it led to, you know, late season losing streaks every
single year on the job. But when you look at
what Kingsbury has done with Kyler Murray and Jalen Daniels,
it's enough to warn an interview request and if you
meet with Kingsbury, teams need to determine maybe he's evolved
(10:12):
to a point where there could be more successful as
a second time coach. All right, vance Joseph. Now here's
a guy, a fifty two year old defensive coordinator. He's
ready for a second head coaching opportunity. He previously led
the Broncos to an eleven and twenty one record over
two years. That team was in rebuilding mode. They sucked
and Joseph has led the Broncos defensive turnaround, which has
(10:35):
been very impressive this year. The Broncos are a potential
playoff team for real. He's also a strong leader and
a communicator that's respected by his players. I think he
could bring a real commanding presence to a team that's
looking for a culture change. But aren't they all when
they're going after a new coach? So what is vance
Joseph Cliff Kingsbury, Steve Spagnolo, Brian Flores, Mike McCarthy, Vrabel,
(11:01):
and Bill Belichick have in common. They've already been coaches
in the NFL, so we haven't even gotten to the
list of potential first time head coaches. This is also
a pretty interesting list with one name that keeps popping up.
I'll share that with you in just a minute.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Ben Mallor
Show weekdays at two am Eastern eleven pm Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 5 (11:32):

I'm Bernie Frattle, sting in for Ben Maller tonight as
he takes off and enjoys his Thanksgiving and his Black

Friday and his Saturday. And you'll hear him back on
these airwaves Sunday night, talking to the great callers as well,
and that's why we go back out to the phone lines.
We are joined by Marcel in Brooklyn. Hey, Marcel, has
been a minute. How you been?
Speaker 6 (12:09):
Oh it's been a while, Bernie. I will love to
speak to you since Thanksgiving up last year.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
That's right, that's right, it's been been that long.
Speaker 6 (12:19):
I know it's been a long long time.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
So what do you got for us tonight?
Speaker 6 (12:24):
At Marcel all, should we do some Friday food picks?
Because there's a new dawn, a news day it is.
So you said these words, and I'm going to say
mine Mauer or frattle militia. Let's get into it.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
Let's go, baby, let's go. I'm pumped.
Speaker 6 (12:44):
Oh yes, let's do this. Let's rock in most of start.
Light this candle, white Castle.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
Oh, give me some onion chips and a double cheeseburger.
Now I said, I said, let's light this candle. I
think I channeled what night. But forgive me for that.
Speaker 6 (13:02):
That's not a mixed match, my friend. But thank you.
But I'm going to say for my Thanksgiving dinner, it
will be turkey with gravy, rice, mac and cheese, chicken
and lasagna. This is wonderful, and I hope you love it,
and I love that from Thanksgiving straight to the ladies,
(13:23):
and I hope Brianna's going to play along. But I'm
gonna say Lorna first. So Lorena, what do you have
for Thanksgiving?
Speaker 7 (13:31):
I had a couple of things today, Marcea. I had
ham and turkey. I made green bean casserole. I had
sweet potatoes. I had cranberry sauce. I had ham and
turkey gravy.
Speaker 6 (13:44):
Warning the mixed match alert, it goes to the turkey
it is what all right? As a matter of fact,
does that mean right? Turkey it is that's going to
be a mixed match alert, the double one, but not
for the others, mixed matching it up? So turkey it
is Loreno some congrato and Brianna, thank you for following
(14:08):
me and the requests here on my socials. So what
do you have to Thanksgiving?
Speaker 8 (14:13):
A same?
Speaker 9 (14:13):
I had turkey stuffie yes, yes, and a sweet potato
mash and greenan castro and some cranberry.
Speaker 6 (14:30):
I have to say for the ladies, Brianna and Lorena,
bull it up. That's what the triple word, the triple
mixed matchelort.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
It is Marcel. Always a pleasure you enjoy your Friday.
I just want to make sure I get you. There
are callers, but always a pleasure to hear for Marcel.
Bye Marcel.
Speaker 6 (14:53):
Oh yes, it is the triple Mixedmatchelort and Bernie. I
have to say for you, thank you for that. Well,
we'll see what happens for doing it again next year
in twenty twenty five. For thanks, Jimmy.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
All right, and on that note, we go out to
Doug in San Diego. Doug, thanks for joining us tonight
on the Ben Malor Show.
Speaker 5 (15:16):
What do you.
Speaker 8 (15:17):
Got burn, baby Burn, I'll tell you you're a fire
tonight with the bumpers.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
Yeah, well you got to give the staff credit for that. Man.
I a motown guy, but yeah, it's really really good ones.
Uh oh you know yeah, spanning several decades.
Speaker 8 (15:35):
Let me kneel to the altar of the Jefferson air Plane.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
Grace slickly they became, they became the Jefferson Starship for
you if you're scoring it home.
Speaker 8 (15:46):
Okay, it's great to hear you. I'm giving thanks for
Bernie on the radio tonight because it's great to hear you.
And I wanted to bring up a couple of things.
First of all, Mark Mike Rabel. Yes, I think he's
the best head coach available, better than Bill Belichick. I
love this guy. He's he was such a great player,
(16:07):
he's such a great coach. I can't believe Bennase he
was dumb enough to fire him.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
That shocked me too. That team had a physical attitude
and an identity with Rabel. So you're my god, you
spot off? Yes? Actually, anything else tonight, Doug? Pardon anything
else tonight? Doug?
Speaker 8 (16:27):
Yeah? Oh yeah, I got more. Okay, let me just
say bet the farm Cliff Kingsbury will become the new
head coach of the Chicago Bear.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
You think is the quarterback matchup situation? There? He might possible?
You love?
Speaker 8 (16:42):
Are you kidding? He was his offensive coordinator in college.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
No, you bring up a good point. You never know
what the Dan Bears are going to do, though, but
they're in their dysfunctional hell.
Speaker 10 (16:51):
In my opinion, Washington isn't going to let him go
because I think you're smart enough pay him like a
head coach. He is that valuable to the Commodoores or
whoever they are them, their command what they.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
Call this week the commanders yeah.
Speaker 8 (17:06):
I like the Commodore's more so then. Uh, just one
other thing here, I'm all for robot umps because they
couldn't do any worse than the idiots they have half
the time out there.
Speaker 3 (17:19):
Now, the trifecta. Nicely done to night, Doug. Yess, very done.
All right, buddy, thanks for checking in. Uh Frankel in
Orange County, California, welcome into the Ben Maler Show.
Speaker 11 (17:30):
How are you, hey, Bernie? How are you doing good?
Speaker 3 (17:33):
Thank you?
Speaker 11 (17:34):
Hey. We touched bays years ago, right when the trade
went down between Golf and Stafford, and we both try
to agreed, like you know what dumb moved You don't
give up a franchise quarterback for a few years with Stafford, Well,
we didn't know in the trade where they were to
add obj and von Miller. So all these gram fans say,
(17:54):
we want the chip, you know what we wanted hip,
but we also have the worst defense of a well
title the next year, and look what, god what Golf
is doing.
Speaker 3 (18:05):
I defended Golf. I've been a golf defender since he
was at CAW. Thank you, Franco. I knew we could
do this go ahead.
Speaker 11 (18:12):
So my thing is with that and I'm saying this
is the Rams fans now, I kind of drupped off,
supposed to be here for a few years and getting
back now. But I'd say the Rams won the chip.
The Lions won the trade because everyone's saying, oh, there's
both winners. No, you can't say they're both winners. You
pick one or the other. Who won the trade. The
(18:33):
Lions won the trade. The Rams want to chip. The
thing now is way Hilly's takeover the Rams house still
because if they would have kept golf and have been
consistent winning for all these last four years, it could
have changed things in LA. But that chip said is
bad because we had the worst.
Speaker 3 (18:52):
You're not wrong. They sold their soul. Can you imagine
Franco If Tekwoski Tart doesn't drop that interception, then Matt
Stafford puts right in the bread basketball or.
Speaker 11 (19:03):
Donald didn't stop.
Speaker 3 (19:05):
That. I was just gonna say that next he when
he sacked Joe Burrow.
Speaker 11 (19:10):
GoF had to beat Breathed to get to the Super
Bowl and then face the Dynasty, which Mcvada the second
year was over coached by out coached by by Milichick.
That's why they lost the super Bowl. But it was
three to three in the three quarters, he went toe
to toe with Brady to three quarters. Stafford had to
beat Jimmy g in the NFCC and then faced second
(19:32):
year Burrow with second year Zach Taylor with McVeigh with
five years experience at that time. It's so freaking apples
and oranges that these young Rams fans that are on
Twitter and I try to school and I going, dudes
long term that the.
Speaker 12 (19:47):
Trade didn't give me one to chip.
Speaker 11 (19:50):
The trade will be done. When Stafford retired and Godfred argue,
he looked back, going, wow, how did each how did
each team fare? It's already done, and I go, if
God is the end? See his third nf third NFC
championship in eight years. Before seven came over, he was
owned for three in his playoff games in this.
Speaker 3 (20:11):
For seven in playoff game implications they were they'd never
talk about that, and he blew the game in Dallas
in January twenty fifteen. The Lions fans want to complain
about the rev They had to lead in the fourth
quarter and Stafford turned it over and back to back possessions,
and people said Stafford never had anything to work with
the Detroit that twenty fourteen team was twelve and four.
(20:32):
They had seven Pro Bowlers and Dominicancu, Calvin Johnson and
the number three ranked defense. You got the last word.
I run to get to one of the caller.
Speaker 11 (20:40):
No, it's just and I go. That's why LA football
is not succeeding, because the Rams have not had a
long term plan, even going back to Georgia days. Obviously
that's a bad plan. But anyways, I love you Bernie
on Lagos Bay again. I was out a great night tonight,
a giving and for drumline say they do all best.
Speaker 3 (21:00):
Thanks Frankle. Midnight hour on Friday from midnight to one Pacific.
You're gonna have to join us fill up in Buena Park.
How are you, hey, Bernie, how are you doing doing well?
Thank you.
Speaker 5 (21:15):
I'm just wanting to say that I love listening to
you every week. I look forward so much to what
kind of brand new fool are you? And what my name?
That kind of makes my week every week. It's a
lot of fun and I really love playing along with
what my name and I usually do well with all
(21:36):
of my guesses.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
Yeah, I get that's great. That's great to hear. It's
something I implemented a couple of years ago, and it's
taken off like crazy and just one of those things,
a little bit lighthearted, you know. And obviously most most
sports talk listeners have a good base and knowledge, so
they kind of get it right. They get we don't
take ourselves too serious. Uh, anything you wanted to add
(22:02):
as far as the topics we were talking about tonight.
Speaker 5 (22:04):
Yes, as far as your last caller, I think that
both teams did well in the trade, but I couldn't.
I got to disagree because I'm a huge RAM fan,
going way back to the early days. You know, when
Ray elevates, he took them to their.
Speaker 3 (22:23):
First I remember, yeah lost loss of the Steelers thirty
one nineteen.
Speaker 5 (22:29):
Yeah, that team was only nine and seven and it
was their last year at the Coliseum. And you know,
they upset Dallas in the first round, and then they'd
beat Gampa Bay nine nothing in nine Super Bowl? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (22:41):
Was it seven? That Doug Williams was a quot not nothing? Okay,
thank you, thank.
Speaker 11 (22:47):
You, yeah man.
Speaker 5 (22:48):
But I just love Matthew Stafford. I am a big
golf fand.
Speaker 12 (22:53):
And I did hate to see him go.
Speaker 5 (22:55):
But I just think the toughness of Matt Stafford is
uh really what of his best cause I'll give you
that a hit and put the ball where it needs
to be. And I think both teams made up really well.
Speaker 3 (23:09):
But I am very happy for golf, good analysis, very
good stuff. Appreciate you man. Thanks for checking in, Philip,
Mike and Modesto. Now he's a regular on our midnight
hour on Friday evenings.
Speaker 12 (23:23):
What's up, Mike, I just want to fill in the details.
I think they both did well, but it's more than
just golf. Though. That team is loaded offensive line, superb,
running back, superb a defense. So let's not make it
like golf. Carning.
Speaker 3 (23:42):
Well, no one said, no one, No one has said that, Mike.
But you do not win games. I'm going to keep
you on. You're gonna get your time, but you do
not win games consistently without an efficient quarterback. I mean,
golf has been off the charts. Okay, so continue on.
Speaker 12 (23:59):
I agree, But with that being said, I was really
frustrated with him that last year and that Super Bowl
were leaving out that he lost that whole year. I
had Todd Gurley on fantasy. That team was Todd Gurley
left Todd Gurley.
Speaker 3 (24:17):
Right, except for one thing that Sean McVay did not
like year at golf. It wasn't his guy. He wasn't
there when they drafted golf number one overall. But continue
on because you're making good points.
Speaker 12 (24:30):
Now now that lastly, the reason I'll forever love Stafford
is because of his not so much the Super Bowl,
but it was the fact when things were going wrong
versus Tampa Bay, they were in trouble and Matthew Stafford said,
not today, Tom Brady, You're not.
Speaker 13 (24:49):
Getting that ball back. That's right, and him and Cup
made play after play. Same thing the next week against
the forty nine ers. The fort nine had their number.
Speaker 12 (25:01):
They were beating them again the Spider garoppolo, but when
it came to the fourth quarter of that game, the
last drive Stafford and Cup again maybe.
Speaker 3 (25:10):
She except for Jaquoski tarts drop pass. Those are the
ones that killed us in Detroit. Sorry, I can't, I can't,
I can't let the one go. Hey, Mike, listen. I
appreciate hearing from you, Pale, and I want to hear
from you on Friday night as well. I have a
guest I have to get to but thanks for checking in,
and maybe we can continue this. I appreciate it, and
your points are are are duly noted. All right, let's
(25:32):
go to a gentleman. He's been on my show many times.
You'll know right away he's from Boston. And the reason
we bring him in is because we've been following this
Belichick thing since a year ago. I asked him, I said, Jeff,
this is Belichick's last year. He said, yes, sure enough,
he was fired. Does Belichick want to coach again? He
said yes. Well, now we're getting down to the short
strokes and Bill Belichick might have a choice of a
(25:53):
couple of teams, and one team keeps coming up in Jacksonville.
So let's welcome in from mecI and Boston. Jeff, Jeff,
thanks for getting up early. Man.
Speaker 4 (26:01):
Yeah, good morning and happy thanksgivin Bernie.
Speaker 3 (26:04):
Back at you. So a quick question for you, are
you hearing the well I don't want I don't want
to lead the witness and put worson about that they
keep talking about Jacksonville. Is there a merit to that?
Speaker 4 (26:16):
My take on that is, I think it's just setting
the precedent on what Bill really wants. In other words,
he wants full control. He wants to be able to
bring the gang back Josh McDaniel or Patricia his staff.
And then of course he wants total control of the drafts.
(26:38):
So when I hear Jacksonville Jackson, Bill sounds like they're
willing to offer him the keys to the car. And
so the other teams at least know what Bill's looking for.
So I think that's more media and pr everyone I
talk to, Thanks, but no thanks, Jacksonville will not be
(27:00):
a destination for them.
Speaker 3 (27:01):
Okay, fair enough. Well, one of the things we do
know Bill Belichick is fifteen wins away from Don Shula.
He's probably only going to hang around three more years
tops I'm guessing I don't know. That would put him
at seventy six years old. And so you have kind
of this you got to thread the needle, Jeff, And
what do I mean by that? He wants to go
somewhere that's not a full rebuild, but he's got to
(27:23):
know somewhere they're going to need a coach and he
wants to win fifteen games. So process of elimination, what
are we looking at it? Can you rule out Dallas?
Would you rule out the Dallas Cowboys?
Speaker 4 (27:33):
I think the ego gets in the way with Bill
and Jerry. I don't think I mean, that would have
been the easiest path. That would be a good defense,
good offense, good structure, not a major rebuild. Do you
have a quarterback of vetan quarterback game? I would say
(27:56):
in desperation. In other words, plan or playing b didn't
go well with Bernie and then this would be his fallback.
I don't think this would be his number one choice.
Speaker 3 (28:08):
I certainly agree with that, but at some point you
start to run out of teams. Listen, we'll just do
this for giggles. We know the Chicago Bears are going
to need a coach. Would Bill Belichick be in the
mix for that?
Speaker 4 (28:22):
Oh, that's a great question, Perry.
Speaker 3 (28:24):
Would you even want to be everything?
Speaker 4 (28:28):
I hear is they're gonna push all in for Ben Johnson,
They're gonna give them a contract and a pen. They're
gonna obviously try to get them away from your Lions,
and that the fact that that's the Bears guy intriguing,
maybe too young of a quarterback. How does that sound? Bernie?
Speaker 3 (28:48):
You know I wouldn't hire Ben Johnson and from the
Bears because I here's why. That's an organization that needs
a field general that seasoned like a Mike and I
don't think at this stage in the Bears history, whatever
that may be, you can bring in a guy who's
going to have to produce results fairly quickly while still
(29:10):
learning on the job. Just my two cents, man, Just
my two cents. How about the New Orleans Saints? Could
Bill Belichick? Look, I don't think they're that far away
the Saints from being an actual playoff team.
Speaker 4 (29:22):
The Saints, what do they do with quarterback?
Speaker 11 (29:26):
Obviously? Do they keep carved?
Speaker 4 (29:29):
They got a young kid, dis Spencer Rattler that got
a few games.
Speaker 5 (29:33):
Didn't look good.
Speaker 4 (29:35):
That one surprised me because that one was gained in
Steam a few months ago as a contender there. So
I'll put that on the short list of three. How's that, Bernie?
Speaker 3 (29:46):
Do I dare mention the Raiders? Bill Belichick to the
Raiders Jess who's here as a part time owner?
Speaker 4 (29:53):
Now Tom Brady, Wow, you know what great founds good?
But there's there's a gentleman and a potential first pick
called Shador Sanders and Dion Sanders where the Raiders might
be knocked him.
Speaker 3 (30:13):
Yeah, that to me, that's a disaster waiting to happen
if they've tried to pull some some gimmick like that.
All right, let's go back to the New York Giants,
the one team I thought, I don't know, Brian Davie's
still working there, so you don't want to, you know,
put a bullsy on a guy's head who still got
a job. But obviously this Giants thing is not worked out,
and I think Dables regressed, and now that Danny Dimes
(30:34):
is gone. Thoughts on that, that feels like a full
rebuild though.
Speaker 8 (30:38):
Now, well, well we.
Speaker 4 (30:40):
Talked a year ago on the Giants right where it
all started that I'm gonna still stick with that.
Speaker 6 (30:48):
Now.
Speaker 4 (30:48):
It's kind of funny. I've kind of correlate it with
the Bruins U and Jim Montgomery. You know, you fire
a coach and he's hired immediately, Like Bruce Cassidy he
went to Stanley Cup. You fired Jim Montgomery, he hired
two days later by the Saint Louis Blues. So you know,
you look at this situation. If Brian Dabole is fired,
(31:11):
he would be hired by you know, well thirty teams
would call him.
Speaker 12 (31:16):
Put it that way.
Speaker 4 (31:17):
So I think there's a situation where he would come in.
I think he'd get a lot of control. Number one,
Number two, they will be drafted in a quarterback. But
who's out there for a free agent, a veteran quarterback,
a quick rebuild? Why you draft a quarterback. I'm going
to stick with that when Bertie is my number one
(31:37):
thoughts spot.
Speaker 3 (31:39):
Still all right, So, Jeff, the timeline a year ago
about now, you pretty much guaranteed that Bill Belichick would
be gone.
Speaker 8 (31:46):
He was.
Speaker 3 (31:46):
We just didn't know how it was going to happen.
First of the year you said, yeah, he's going to
want to be back in the mix. Didn't get hired
in the last cycle. Maybe he needed a year off.
He sounds like he's having fun find the TV camera
heading into this year. You're going to stick to your
guns and we'll do this in January. I want to
put words in your mouth, but it sounds like you
believe Belichick would be the next coach of the New
(32:09):
York Giants. That would be the most likely thing to happen.
Speaker 4 (32:12):
I'm gonna stick to that one till January.
Speaker 5 (32:15):
Bernie.
Speaker 3 (32:16):
All right, Jeff, appreciate you getting up early. Enjoy the
rest of your weekend. Man and you've hit these right right,
you know, along the way, you've had your finger on
the pulse of the Belichick thing. And I have no
reason to dot you at this point. Jeff, enjoy your
weekend man, future kick check. That is Jeff Dawson from
ECI in Boston. He's had his finger on the pulse
of the Patriots for years around all those Brady Belichick
(32:39):
teams for a couple decades. Yeah, in case you couldn't
tell the accent, Yeah, he's from Boston. Yeah, all right,
we're about well, it's Saturday. It's gonna be Saturday at
noon Eastern, so we're what we're twenty four about thirty
(33:02):
three hours away from a college football game between two
teams that I believe is not even close. It's the
biggest rivalry in all of college sports, not just college football.
And I'll tell you why. I'll tell you why. This
state Okay, this dates back to seventeen eighty seven. Yeah,
I'll tell you why. This is the biggest rivalry. And
(33:24):
we wrapped the show on the Ben Maller Show. I'm
Bernie Fraddle. We're comedy line from the Las Vegas Fox
Sports Radio. Tirack dot Com studios. Keep it lock you

Speaker 3 (33:43):

Bernie Fraddles City in for Ben mallorcomedy line from the
Tyraq dot Com studios here in Las Vegas. Not for nothing,
I'll be back on these airways Friday night, eleven pm.
(34:03):
We'll do it for three more hours, and then I'll
be back on Saturday night eleven pm Pacific and do
it for four more hours. And before I get to
my thoughts on the greatest rivalry in college football. Before
go any further, I want to thank my broadcast team
back in Los Angeles, Lorena and Brianna doing all the
hard work behind the scenes keeping us glue together and
(34:25):
keeping us on the air. Great job. Obviously, you guys
are veterans in the Ben Mallor Show and at Fox
Sports Radio. All right, So I told this story with
Dan Byer and Aaron Torris earlier Thursday, because I covered
a lot of the Michigan Ohio State football games and
(34:45):
people just have no idea how intense the rivalry is.
You just have to be there to see it. But
the point I'm making is in the hate between the
two schools and the history. Here's a quick example. Woody
Haes a legendary Woody Hayes. So in nineteen sixty nine,
the two teams played and the year before, the first
year coach at Michigan by the name of bo Sham Beckler,
(35:05):
who supposedly had no chance to beating Ohio State his
first year, knocked off the number one Buckeyes twenty to twelve,
and it was incredible. It began what was called the
ten year War between bow and Woody. Well the following year,
Woody Hayes was so bent on revenge that they ran
up to score on Michigan and they were leading forty
four to fourteen with about a minute to go in
the game, and Ohio State scored another touchdown and it
(35:30):
was fifty to fourteen, and the next thing you know,
Woody Hayes and the Ohio State Buckeyes line up for
a two point conversion. Well, they actually didn't convert the
conversion with people are like, what the hell's he doing there?
They're leading fifty to fourteen, why is he going for two?
And sure enough, after the game, during the postgame press conference,
(35:53):
a reporter asked Woody Hayes, Dude, you're up fifty to fourteen.
Why did you go for two? And he very bluntly said,
because they wouldn't let me go for three? Was I
begging too hard for a rim shot there? Because they
wouldn't let me go for three? Okay, I get the message.
I get the message. All right. So this, I think
(36:16):
is what I would considered to be one of twenty
data points of evidence as to why the Michigan Ohio
State game is The hate, the intensity, it's indescribable. You
have to be there to see it. Well, hell, how
many high how many college football rivalries? Go back to
seventeen eighty seven? All right? Where am I going with this?
(36:39):
All right? See, I mean one hundred and ten years
before this ever became a game, there was a rivalry. See,
because in seventeen eighty seven, Congress drafted this thing called
the Northwest Ordnance, and that stipulated there was two hundred
and sixty thousand square miles of territory that surrounded the
Great Lakes and that would eventually be carr a car
(36:59):
of into a handful of new states. Now, more specifically,
what the laws said was is that the border between
Ohio and Michigan was to run on this quote east
west line drawn through the southerly benned extreme of Lake
Michigan until it intersected with Lake Erie. The problem is
they didn't have GPS back then. I mean, they had
(37:22):
these primitive maps that basically made Lake Michigan's southern tip
was really many miles from its true location. So as
a result of this, the original border, which was placed
near the Mamie River, which people in Ohio know what
that is, that became the future city of Toledo and
northern Ohio rather than southern Michigan. Now, this created a
(37:47):
literal war, and both Ohio and Michigan had good reason
for wanting control of Toledo and the Mammi River because
in the early eighteen hundreds they completed the Erie Canal
and it linked the Great Lakes to the east coast.
So there's all this valuable opportunities for trade. It was
the largest port on Lake Erie's western side, and all
of a sudden, there's village of Toledo goes into a
(38:08):
city and it was poised to become a commercial hub.
So so much was riding on this contested territory. Both
sides attempted to tighten their grip on an end. They
literally went to war. But finally the region was settled,
and they constructed roads and held elections and collected taxes.
Ohio took its case to Washington in the early eighteen thirties.
(38:29):
Many of the Buckeye Congressmen blocked the Michigan petition for
statehood because they wanted the territory of Toledo to belong
to Ohio hatred the borders the Union. By the time
you get to the mid eighteen hundreds, Toledo had its
own borders. Ohio blocked admittance to anybody around. President Andrew
Jackson stepped in and worked out a compromise where Ohio
(38:51):
received a strip Michigan got the Upper Peninsula, which was
basically an unsettled territory. It's safe to say the fan
bases never put that Toledo War behind them. As far
as I can see, it's fresh on their minds. Maybe
not really, but you know what I mean. So in
Michigan and Ohio State take the field at noon on Saturday.
(39:12):
Just remember this is a rivalry that actually started as
a territorial war. Yeah, as a territorial war, and I
think the war continues Saturday. I feel like Ohio State wins.
They're a twenty one point favorite. Michigan may be around
the number, but come on, they're over matches time and
(39:32):
Ohio State's off for revenge. All right, peeps, thanks for
tuning in the night. All the best to Ben Mallard
and our crew. I will be back on these airwaves
again Friday night at eleven pm Pacific with plenty of
high jinks and more good guests. And in the meantime,
enjoy the rest of your Thanksgiving what's left in black
Friday and keep it locked up. Next two pros and
(39:55):
a cup of Joe. Fox Sports Radio
