Speaker 2 (00:21):
It is now officially Monday, December thirtieth, and lo and behold.
When this gentleman and I talked last night, I said,
give it twenty four hours. There'll be plenty of new
stuff in the twenty four hour NBA news cycle, and
sure enough there is. Let's welcome them in the legend.
Mark Medina Medina Magic.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
Our Fox Sports radio.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Guru on the NBA, and you hear them on my
show every Saturday night at midnight and all around the network.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
Mark, how are you, buddy?
Speaker 3 (00:52):
If I am doing well, you would think that the
Sunday NFL is the king. But the Lakers are two things.
They pour off a pre senate and trade and literally
two minutes ago, Lebron James turned forty years old. A
lot of pack.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Okay, so let's start there and I'll take you right down.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
We've got we're going to get to all of this. So, yes,
two minutes.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Ago, Lebron turn at forty, So he's so he's now
officially the only player in the history of the NBA
who not only played as a teenager, but we'll play
at age forty.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
Do you want to start by wishing Lebron a happy birthday?
Speaker 3 (01:28):
Yeah, happy birthday. Anthony Davis said he has scanning him
a bottle of veno. I'll, you know, keep my respectful independence.
I'm sure he'll get a lot of gifts thrown his way.
I'm sure he'll wish that someone throws him a bottle
of Sound of Youth because he'll want to keep going.
But I think this Lakers trade helps in that respect
(01:49):
that you know, with getting Dorian Finney Smith, he can
get some perimeter help and some outside shoting help to
make some life easier. So the Lakers least gave him
a gift.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
All right, Listen, there's a lot of layers to this trade,
and I kind of want to get to all of them,
So let me start here. As I know you recall
several weeks ago, it felt like there was a crack
in the armor between D'Angelo Russell and JJ Redick, and
I feel like there's another agenda here that JJ Reddick
(02:20):
looked at him and said, this dude, you think is
going to play defense?
Speaker 1 (02:23):
I don't want that team. Let's start there.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
What was the real before we break down the trade
for both sides, what was the real impetus for the
Lakers to make this deal.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
Yeah, well, I'm not going to dispute what happened with
j J Reddick and D'Angel Russell. That suffs real, but
I don't think that's the reason they traded D'Angel Russell.
I mean from next as an O's standpoint, Yes, because
of his defense is inconsistent play that was a factor,
But him coming off the bench or him not seeing
eye I with j J on the roll, I don't
(02:55):
think it had much to do with it. I think
I had more to do with the Brooklyn net for
early sellers because they're not going anywhere this season. We
saw the trade with Dennis Schroeder to Golden State. Now
they're making other guys available. The Lakers won another perimeter
player because in today's NBA, there's no such thing as
having too many wing players that can defend the wing
and also shoot the three ball, and De'angel Russell. For
(03:18):
all his weaknesses, he also has many strengths that make
him an attractive trade asset and also helps he's on
expiring contract eighteen million. Until you mix that all up together,
there's a reason why the Lakers acquired him in a
trade and draft him, but there's also a reason they
trade him twice.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
So you essentially said this, but I'm going to rephrase it.
I like Dorian Finny Smith. Oh, he can shoot threes.
He can shoot threes, he will play defense, and I
think he gives the Lakers some wing depths. He'll dish
out on the assist, he'll get some rebounds, and so
(03:57):
does Can you quantify maybe how many more games the
Lakers win with Dorian Finney Smith and before they had it.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
Yeah, that's a very good question, because you know, everything
is always fluid. It always starts with how healthy Lebron
James Anthony Davis are. But I think that when you're
looking at if they stayed status quo, if they didn't
do this, it's a game changer because he's going to
bull search three point shoot and they haven't been great
(04:26):
in that department. They also haven't been great on defense.
I think the other thing that we have to keep
in mind is this is not just the only deal
that the Lakers may do. They have until February sixth
to get through the trade deadline. They did not deal
any of their first round picks, and you would expect
that they would do that. Rob Polink has made it
(04:47):
clear he's willing to trade his first round picks if
it's something that he says leads to Lakers excellence. And
you know what that means is does that help them
become an NBA contender. So as we look at it now,
they're fifth in the West eighteen thirteen. That's a social
subject of change. But if I had a guess, I
think that Dorrin Finney Smith's presence alone gets them at
(05:10):
least five more wins by the end of the season.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
Okay, that's saying a lot.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
And let's also not go to sleep on Shake Milton
who is I don't think he's a ham and agger.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
He can play point guard. Do you expect him to
cease get some minutes for the Lakers this year? He's
been been in the league five ten years.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
Yeah, he'll be an organization. He's not as valuable. His
three point shooting shaky, but he's a good defender. He's
a good playmaker. I think when you're looking at the
depth chart here, Austin Reeves and Gabe Vincent, Max Chris
here clearly ahead of Shake Milton, but yet to keep
in mind that, you know, gave Vincent could be a
trade ship moving forward. And so the Lakers like gave Vincent.
(05:50):
They think he's a solid zet. He defends well, his
shot comes and goes, but he impacts winning. But the
reality is outside of Lebron James Anthony Davis, one's untouchable.
And even though these players are technically touchable and tradable,
you know, I think that there's a trust in Austin
Reeves development and really hatcha Morris development. So what I'm
(06:14):
getting out of Shake Milton is a great insurance policy.
And you know, he's another guy that can help the
team's perimeter defense.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
All right, Mark, here we go bud on the heels
of Naji Marshall and use of Nurkic, both being suspended
for the rules in a fight during Friday night. Here
we go a pretty good little tussle in the heat
and rockets and Tyler Hero and Amn Thompson got into it.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
First of all, what led to that?
Speaker 2 (06:46):
And seeing I mean, is there been bad blood because
it seemed innocuous at first and it just escalated quickly.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
What happened there, Yeah, I'm not aware of any bad
blood previously. But what happened was Tower, Hero and Amon
Thompson were you know, gain tangled up before an inbounds play.
A men clearly took exception to Tyler hooking him a
little bit, and then he decided to become a WWE
character and basically body slam him to the court. That's
(07:13):
obviously unacceptable in grounds for ejection. With that also result,
it was both teams, you know, storming out, and I
think when you look at you know, one of the
many legacies with NBA Commissioner David Stern, one thing that
the league doesn't like, partly because of his vision, is
when guys get off the bench. And so as a
result of that, you know, there are a lot of ejections.
(07:35):
I think there were six total that not only included
Amen Thompson, Tyler Hero, but also included I believe Umeadoka
and some other players here. So yeah, I expect a
lot of other fines and suspensions. The other ones that
were ejected were Terry Rozier, Jalen Green, and Rockets assistant
(07:58):
coach Ben Sullivan. So yeah, the main perpetrators were obviously
Amen Thompson and Tywer Hero, but they just created a
domino effect with guy's storming the court.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
See I think there, I you know, I know it's
against a lot of practice psychology without a license. I
do it all the time. Though I think there was
a little more to it. Miami had been down twelve
points in the second half and Houston went on a
cold streak, and meanwhile Tyler Herro was on fire. He
had like twenty seven points. He was all over the place,
and I think he I think said something and it
(08:32):
might have been leading up to it, because guys get
tangled to look like.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
That all the time.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
But let's also not bury the lead here, because this
is part of a larger sort of a narrative mark
that we've had on a lot of our conversations over
the last couple of months.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
The NBA has got mad.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Fred van Vliet had been ejected even before the fight
because you bumped a referee and then you got this
situation happening with Joel Embiid and someone else went off
on the NBA on you know, flip somebody off or
some Okay, Adam Silver is very optics conscious.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
He seems eerily quiet here.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
What do you expect him to do because we're headed
toward another mounts at the Palace. Maybe not that dramatic,
but these are starting to become normalized, Mike Mark, They're
part of our conversation a week.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Well, yeah, you make a great point with everything here,
but I will push back that Adam Silver isn't necessarily
eerily quiet. It's happened today, and so what's going to
happen tomorrow is the NBA is going to release a
statement announcing multi game suspensions for all these players. So
it's not like this is an example of Adam Silver
(09:47):
is afraid to penalize the players because he wants to
be liked and he has more of an amenable personality
than David Stern. But the larger point you're saying, I
agree with that you can't accept any of these incidents
and the fact that they happened on once. Some of
it is a little bit random, and when you look
at the history of the NBA. We've certainly seen plenty
(10:08):
of examples here, but they seem very extreme, and so yeah,
he's got to draw from line in the sand, and
I fully expect that he will.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
All right.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Just to clarify my statement, I am sticking to my
guns that I believe Silver's been early quiet over the
last several weeks, because I do not consider the fight
between the Heat and the Rockets Sunday night to be
a standalone event.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
There have been.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
Things brewing for weeks, and the only press release that
Adam Silver has that I have observed that he has
put forth in recent times was the passing of Dick Parsons.
So it's not a situation where I think, you know,
he's anywhere near Roger Goodell territory where he's going to
(10:57):
kill an ant with a hammer before it gets out
of control because he sees her being.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
Normalized night after night.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
And actually it might bring good attention to the league, ironically,
but I don't think the NBA really wants this for
the long haul.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
No they don't, And I not to get two inside baseball,
but Adam Silver and frankly David sarn I mean Malice
at the Palace is one thing, because that was, you know,
a very pivotal moment in the league history and very extreme.
But when they announced fines or suspensions, there's not a
statement that Adam Silver lets out. The league releases a statement,
(11:31):
you know, they attribute the punishment that it was announced
by Joe Dumars because he is the executive vice president,
had a basketball operations, he's a disciplinarian. It is very fitting.
You know, Joe Dumars is part of the bad boys Piston,
so he knows what it's like on both ends there.
So that's the usual protocol. So the bottom line is,
(11:53):
expect an announcement tomorrow. There's gonna be a lot of suspensions.
The same thing with the Pistons magic aim other night,
and so I expect moving forward Piston's magic hime a
few weeks ago, same thing. When we're talking about the
Sun's Nuggets game, same thing will happen, you know tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
I want to compare Adam Silver to David Stern. I
was not a fan of David Stern per se. He
was kind of a rude guy, I thought, but he
was highly effective in his commissioner Okay, highly effective. He
talked about the Mounts at the Palace being the toughest
situation he ever had to deal with during his tenure
as commissioner. But had Adam Silver been the commissioner, then
(12:40):
what would he have set after it? You know, all
you kids, you got to be better. You know, we'll
find you fifty bucks. I'm telling you, man, I was
there that night. Yeah, the NBA will never live it down.
I just feel there was a different tone set under
David Stern, And perhaps I didn't articulate my position as accurately.
I wanted to what is the tone that Adam Silver
(13:04):
setting because I think he wants to be liked by
the players.
Speaker 3 (13:07):
Yeah. I mean it's very clear that we've had a
decade's worth of data to show that his tone is
completely different. And even when he has commented, like with
John Morant for example, with his old gun toting episode
on Instagram Live, it's very conciliatory. He speaks with empathy.
Speaker 4 (13:27):
Now.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
Part of it is we are in a different era,
even though it was only twenty years ago. Part of
you know, how you may recall how David Stern handled
the mouse of the Palace. You know, very much a
concern on just how the NBA players were viewed as
far as you know, the racial component, and you know,
there's a lot of rhetoric when it came to describing
(13:48):
players as thugs and all that, and he wanted to
clean up that reputation. That was the impetus for you know,
installing the dress code. At the time, it was not
well liked, but ironically that is what paved the way
for you know, players not only to look more formal,
but to really lean in on the fashion opportunities that
come with being at the game and using it almost
(14:11):
as an infomercial. So part of it is the time,
but a lot of it is personality. I mean, David
Stern and Adam Silver couldn't be any more different with
how they lived.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
You're not you. You are spot on.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
The last thing for me, because this is a story
that look very innocuous, but it's starting to get legs.
We all now that know now that Wemby put out
a call on social media. I said, who wants to
meet you in the southwest corner of the Washington Square
Park to play chess? Which is legend Jerry, New York.
There's all kinds of chess, you know, And all of
a sudden people were showing up almost instantly. I'm starting
(14:46):
to wonder if this was a contrivance. The NBA needs stars,
they need likable stars, and Wemby perhaps is the guy
to take that torch in the future. I think Lebron
is played beyond belief and I don't see the Lucas
or anybody else stepping up and being the type of
likable personality that.
Speaker 1 (15:07):
The league needs.
Speaker 2 (15:08):
Do you think that whole chesting with Wemby and New
York was a contrivist and somebody put the id in
his head?
Speaker 3 (15:16):
Who really knows. I Mean there's always a lot of
things behind the scenes when it comes to teams and players,
publicists and agents and all that. But the bottom line
is all that matters is what came out and the
effect it had, and it was overwhelmingly positive. I mean,
he's in New York City. People came up to play
chess with them, They loved kind of the randomness, and
(15:37):
it was, you know, it really tapped into kind of
his intellectual, introverted nature, and so I think that that
can be an appeal. I mean, we think a lot
about you know, NBA superstars, and you know, we're always thinking, Okay,
they got to be having this vibrant personality and very
polished and Victor Wamgnama might not be that person, but
(15:59):
he's authentic and even though he's a seven and four giant,
there's this relatability factor of hey, let's just go out
in the park and play chess. That is something that
regardless of the fact that he's the international stars instead
of a domestic star, is something that can really resonate
with fans. And I think that when you compare that
to some of the other international players a Luka Doncic
(16:21):
and nikolea Jokic, they're very stoic. I do appreciate that
they're authentic and they want their game to speak for
themselves as opposed to an attention seeking star that just
wants to post on social media and that's it. But
there has to be kind of a relatability factor, and
I think Victor Webbandama doing that really tapped a new
(16:41):
and I want to be surprised he does it again.
Speaker 1 (16:44):
Mark, great stuff, man.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
We'll see you Saturday night, and I guarantee you there'll
be more stuff in the news cycle.
Speaker 3 (16:50):
Yes, sir. And a quick correction, I was talking about
the Maverick Suns game with the penalties. But with this
rockets melee tonight with Miami, there will be more penalties
announced on Monday.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
Nicely done.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
One of the rare times the word melee is the
Fox Sports Radio network, proving once again that in addition
to your proclivities, you are quite the wordsmith.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
Fran I do write for a living right.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
Nicely done, Mark, always a pleasure, my man.
Speaker 3 (17:19):
I appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (17:21):
It's Mark Medina, Medina magic. Here him every Saturday night
on the Bernie Fratter Show at midnight. Our Fox Sports
Radio NBA grew and you hear them all around the network. Frankly,
all right, coming up? I put this on Twitter as
part of our show Rundown tonight. The freaking college football
portal was already out of control, and now it's worse.
Speaker 1 (17:43):
You know what's funny.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
No one explains how this works. No one explains what
the hell is really going on. No one gives you
the numbers, the deadlines, the exceptions, all that stuff. I'm
going to tell you, Like Ed McMahon used to say
to Jenny car everything you want to know about the
transfer portal and what's going on the first seventeen days
is coming up, right, here on the Ben Maller Show.
Speaker 1 (18:04):
I'm Bernie Fraddle. We're coming you live.
Speaker 5 (18:05):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Ben Maller
Show weekdays at two am Eastern eleven pm Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app Way.
Speaker 1 (18:15):
We've got a.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
Bill Miller sighting. He turns out Bill is having a
late night drink. He's out the drinking over at the
Regal Beagle with mister Furley. And if you remember that,
reference tweet at us at Fox Radio, Fox Radio, at
Fox Sports Radio at Bernie Fratto. Yes, Bill Miller is
(18:36):
having a drink at the Regal Beagle tonight with mister Furley.
And yeah, and he wants to remind everybody, or he
wants to let everybody know and clear up any confusion.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
He is.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
Bill Miller is not in concussion protocol. So we'll hear
from Bill throughout the evening as we wind down, begin
to really wind down. At twenty twenty four, I'm Bernie Fratto,
coming to you live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports
Radio Tirec dot Com studios here in Las Vegas. That's
the Department of Redundancy Department sitting in for the Great
Ben Mallers taking a few days off. The Great Chris
(19:10):
Plank will be with you Monday evening, and I'll be
back with you Tuesday evening, ring the new year. Speaking
of new year, it's a new year. It's a new
era in college football. And while I'm all about freedom
of movement and people having opportunity, this transfer portal is
(19:31):
a freaking mess. You know, Penn State's going to play
a game here Tuesday and their backup quarterback bull for Beulah,
who saw time in almost every game this year, is
left the team transfer portal. Now, I'm not taking on him.
It's not his fault that you have a situation where
the window is narrow. Okay, as a matter of fact,
(19:53):
it was set to close December twenty eighth, but it's
not a firm deadline. I'm gonna get to all that.
And he had the blessing of his co Jane Franklin,
so I'm not picking on him. It's the system that stinks.
We gotta do better, and I have no faith that
we ever will. So here's what you might want to know.
So far after the first but Papa fifteen days, I'm
(20:17):
not sure the final numbers. The window opened December ninth.
There have been two thousand, six hundred and fourteen FPS
players that entered the transfer portal since the window opened
on December ninth. It only took fifteen days, and there's
been five days of activity since then. So I don't
know what the final numbers are. I'll get them, but
that number, it only took fifteen days to break last
(20:39):
year's record of twenty six.
Speaker 1 (20:40):
Hundred and eleven. And now again here's where it's gone
too far.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
You got Marshall University of Fine respected program twenty nine
players they entered the portal. It couldn't even play their
damn Bowl game, all right. But see, here's what's interesting.
The winner transfer portal for underclassmen closed. I think it
was saturdy, which means it'll stop for a while, right, Nope,
not not so fast. Because here's what you need to
(21:06):
know and what's possible and what's ahead for transfers into January. Okay,
December twenty eighth is not a firm deadline. The transfer
portal windows indicate when players must submit their paperwork to
enter the portal. Buy They do, not, however, indicate when
a player can be entered into the portal, so Once
the school receives a player's paperwork to enter the portal,
(21:28):
it's compliance department it's forty eight hours to submit that
player's name into what's called the NCAA Transfer Portal database.
Given that the last day of the portal window was Saturday,
players had up till midnight Saturday local time this last Saturday.
Speaker 1 (21:44):
To submit their names into the portal.
Speaker 2 (21:46):
Then, given compliance departments have forty eight hours to process
the player's paperwork, it's possible under classmen will enter the
portal Monday and even into Tuesday, so we're only on
Monday now. There are also other exceptions to the deadline.
The most notable exception is that with postseason play. So
(22:07):
any player who participates in the postseason, whether it's a
bowl game or a playoff game, they have an additional
five day window to enter the portal once their season
comes to an end. Now, if a player's bowl game
is January first, they have through say January sixth, to
end of the portal. So if the player plays in
(22:29):
a national title game January twenty fifth, they actually are
checked that January twentieth, the national title game is three
weeks from tonight, they'll have through January twenty fifth to
end of the portal, So you got another full month
of hijins and fun for the whole family, and one
(22:50):
or not whether you're wondering whether or not the player
that you brought in last year is actually going to
stay or leave seven nine nine six six three six
nine eight seven seven ninety nine nine Fox. Let's hear
some peeps and our good buddy Manuel and Guardina checks in.
Speaker 1 (23:09):
Manuel. Always a pleasure to hear from you, my friend.
How are you.
Speaker 6 (23:14):
Just loan to celebrate because I'm a burn baby burn
in for Ben baby Ben Oh Bernie Man, great, great
to hear you, man, you have been a marauder this
last few weeks. Uh, I wanted to call.
Speaker 4 (23:33):
And celebrate too.
Speaker 6 (23:35):
Man, I was thinking about him, with all due respect,
You're almost like a forest gump tide when it comes
to sports, because I was thinking you grew up in
the Old Sea, right, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (23:48):
Basically I did.
Speaker 2 (23:48):
I was born to near Detroit, but I grew up
in the OC and then moved back to Michigan for
seventeen years.
Speaker 1 (23:54):
So go ahead.
Speaker 6 (23:55):
Yeah, so then you also played minor base Paul did?
Speaker 1 (23:59):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (23:59):
Well, so dabbled in a Fox scene I mean, you're
a renaissance man. I gotta pit my cap, and the
your sports knowledge is impeccable. When you get guys on
like Crack and all these guys that are Vegas insiders,
I mean, it's a beautiful thing, man. So I just
(24:19):
want to get prompts to you, Bernie. Tell Bill Miller
that he's still a puck. He's still a schmuck. Side
doesn't matter how much he kisses your he's still gonna
be that same Bill Miller. But yeah, Bernie, Man, I
just I just wanted to let you know, Man, we're
(24:40):
spoiled the Fox Sports Network, the Mallard Militia. When we
don't get Benny, we get guys like you. We get
Brian No, Chris Plank, a lot of a lot of
good guys man. And I just appreciate all the sports
knowledge you drop on us. Wanted to one say one
quick thing on Lebron James. You guys were touching on
(25:03):
it earlier, you and Modina about the Lakers with this move.
But I mean, I think, honestly, Lebron has seen his
better days. A d well. He's a great superstar, he
just can't stay healthy enough. And I think these Lakers,
they need to just start really selling.
Speaker 4 (25:23):
Off the ranch.
Speaker 6 (25:24):
That's how I look at it. Man, start going for
next year, for the future, because this smoking mirrors is
just going up and fading away. Hey, I love you, Bernie,
keep up the car.
Speaker 1 (25:39):
Right back at you.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
And by the way, Man, well thanks as always, appreciate
you a lot.
Speaker 1 (25:43):
Pal.
Speaker 2 (25:43):
You know that I'll be in New Year's Eve too
for Ben, so feel free to call back, chop it up,
and maybe have a beverage while you're at it. As
the legend known as Manuel from Guardina's, welcome in Andrea
from Massachusetts. And I will tell you Andre is one
of the h He's a very articulate, thoughtful, well crafted
(26:04):
so whatever, and he's got to say tonight, all right, Andrew,
no pressure, but I just set you up. I know
you'll have something really good to say and you'll articulate it. Well,
what do you got for us tonight?
Speaker 7 (26:14):
How you doing burning? Thanks for taking the call. No
pressure at all.
Speaker 1 (26:19):
Listen.
Speaker 7 (26:19):
I want to comment on what's going on in the
NFL right now. I feel like it's feasts to famine.
Speaker 1 (26:25):
I feel like.
Speaker 7 (26:26):
It's the haves and the have nots here, Okay, and
I'm happy about what's going on in Minnesota. Okay, speaking
of when I just told you know, Sam Donald right
two years ago, him and Baker Mayfield are are you know,
battling it out in Carolina?
Speaker 3 (26:40):
Okay?
Speaker 7 (26:41):
Now, both of them, specifically Sam Donald in terms of
the kings of the North. You know, he's the toast
of the town. So I like what I saw, good Win.
Let's how I had to celebrate brand, you know, after
the game and just a complete turnaround.
Speaker 6 (26:56):
What do we have here today?
Speaker 7 (26:58):
Bill's putting a beating on the New York Jets and
them trying to solidify themselves, you know, as that formidable opponent,
as that contender to the Kansas City Chiefs. So we
talked about the stieve, Bernie. Now let's talk about the
familys Okay. I have a lot to say about it.
I might not get the nil on this take, but
I got a lot. I like how you're leaning in there.
(27:18):
What's going on with these New York Jets owners said
that this was supposed to be the best team that
he's ever had however many years, and that's why he
had to make the move to get rid of a
capable leader and Robert Salah and where have they gone
all the way to the bottom of the barrel and
there's no sympathy, Just like when people win the lottery
and they burn through all that money. The jet you're bringing,
Aaron Rodgers, you give them the keys to the kingdom,
(27:39):
you cater, you put you roll out the red carpet
for him, and now what did you get you? It
gets you the same thing as the Brooklyn Nets got
for rolling out the red carpet to a Kyrie irving
that wasn't ready for us.
Speaker 4 (27:49):
Okay, so I'm very intrigued.
Speaker 7 (27:51):
You know, I don't mean a pile on, but sometimes,
you know, people got to.
Speaker 1 (27:54):
Get to come up and pile on.
Speaker 2 (27:56):
You remember last year, Andre, in twenty twenty three when
the Jets visited Buffalo, was Zach Wilson a quarterback? I
believe they won Today they didn't. They were never competitive.
The Jets won seven games last year. They said all
they were missing was a quarterback. This year has been
an adject disaster. And not only do the Jets lose,
they do it with raw efficiency weekend week out and.
Speaker 7 (28:20):
People not talking about this as much. What's this, Aaron Rodgers?
Now that the Chicks are down. Oh, the next person
can go in because you know he needs to get
his rests, you know, and you're not.
Speaker 4 (28:29):
Going to go down with the ship again.
Speaker 7 (28:32):
I just think it's this. You look at the team
that stay the course, that have culture, that don't go
with all these trends and you know, a flavor of
the month type stuff. They're in contention happy for Minnesota.
Like what I'm saying again, the Bills, less is more
without Stefan Diggs, but the Jets specifically in conclusion, you know,
you s certn'ly got rid of good people and you
(28:54):
have to hold your good people. Aaron Rodgers accountable. You
didn't do it, and now you're a dumpster fire. It
hurts my heart being from the great state of New Jersey. Sorry,
thanks for the time. Is always love to show.
Speaker 1 (29:05):
Thank you Andre.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
If anybody else would like to check in the night
eight seven seven nine nine six six three sixty nine
eight seven seven nine to nine nine Fox, we honor
the mallor tradition where.
Speaker 1 (29:14):
Callers are a priority.
Speaker 2 (29:17):
Now, I want to get back to the portal thing
because it's got a lot of moving parts and I
don't think it's been very well portrayed.
Speaker 1 (29:22):
In the media.
Speaker 2 (29:23):
So you heard what I had to say in terms
of the deadlines and the exceptions to the deadline, and
as late as January twenty fifth, players will have an
opportunity to enter the portal. So it started December ninth.
That's almost two months. So we're going to go from
twenty six hundred to a bunch more. Okay, what about
grad transfers, they operate under a little different rules. They'll
(29:44):
have to wait till the end of the spring portal window.
But there's another exception players who go through a coaching change.
If your coach leaves, any player in that situation is
a lot an immediate thirty day window to re enter
or enter the transfer portal. Now, fortunately most coaching changes
have occurred this season. That doesn't mean there won't be more.
Let's go back out to the phones, Michael and Indiana,
(30:06):
you wanted to weigh in on the transfer portal situation.
Welcome in, all right, Yeah you are there, Michael, you
got the floor.
Speaker 1 (30:17):
All right?
Speaker 4 (30:18):
All right, So.
Speaker 8 (30:20):
I'm Penn State fan, not mad at bo. Yeah he
could be a starter somewhere. But if what I'm hearing
you're saying is right, he actually could have waited longer.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
Yes, yes, yes, I'm giving you the rules. I'm very
well researched on this. He's they're they're they're.
Speaker 1 (30:42):
Slated to play in a game right Tuesday.
Speaker 2 (30:45):
If Penn State loses, he's got five days after that
to do that. Now, it sounds to me like you
got a deal, take it or leave it, and he
had to go. And I'm not cracking on him because
apparently James Franklin him talked it over and there's no
hard heart issues. But answer your question specifically, Michael, Yes,
he could have waited till after the game was played.
Speaker 8 (31:05):
I mean, that's what he should have done, because I mean,
he was a big part of our offense, huge part.
Speaker 6 (31:11):
Of it in our in the Wildcat.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
You know everything.
Speaker 8 (31:15):
I mean, don't get me wrong. Like I said, he
could be a starter somewhere, but he should have known
that he was a huge part of that offense in
that team to take us where we need to go.
Speaker 2 (31:28):
And well, he so you're a Penn State guy, right,
I mean, if I'm not, I think it's my understanding.
He appeared in every game this year at some point
and he's.
Speaker 4 (31:38):
Pretty good player, right, Yes, he is?
Speaker 2 (31:42):
Well, shock you of Penn State lost to uh uh
Tamboise State.
Speaker 8 (31:51):
At this point, but the way we played against his
last team, yeah, I'd be kind of shocked.
Speaker 9 (32:00):
I mean, our offense has gotta step it up, our defenses, duels,
gotta gotta make the plays. We just gotta step it
up because Boise State not a no.
Speaker 1 (32:11):
They're good, damn good. They're damn good. All right, Hey,
thanks for checking.
Speaker 2 (32:15):
I appreciate you man, and uh eight seven seven nine
nine six six three sixth nine. I've got more to
get to here on the portal situation, I'm not done,
all right. I'll reiterate what happens with grad transfers. By
the way, wins the portal enter again. There's a second
window sooner than you think, and you're not gonna believe
what happened last spring. On top of the winner. And
(32:36):
by the way, there are already ranking schools so far
as to how they've fared in the transfer portal this year.
This is just crazy, crazy, crazy, and more crazy. I'm

By the way, Bill Miller ways in, we have confirmed
he is at the Regal Beagle drinking with mister Furley.
But huge props to Tweeter Miguel on fire at you know,
at ex Tweeter whatever you want to call it, at
Mike dmc or. I'm not sure, but he picked right
(33:28):
up on the reference responded said, are you sure Bill
Miller isn't at the Regal Bagele with mister Roper instead
of mister Farley. A plus, my man. That's that's how
we do it. That's how we do it. HARRYT The
Ben Maller Show, Bernie fridle In for Ben Maller. Ben
enjoying a little nice holiday time, and of course he'll
he'll be back soon. And in the meantime we're gonna
(33:51):
hold down the fort for Ben Maller. And I want
to finish up my narrative on the transfer Portland. How
freaking out of control it is the first fifteen days
or were over twenty six hundred players. You think December
twenty eight was a firm deadline, it's not. There are
options for those who you know, if you're coach Leaves
or if you're playing in the postseason game and there's
(34:12):
a forty eight hour lag, there's grad transfer situations. By
the way, it even opens up again in April. We'll
get to that in a bit. But on the Ben
Malors Show, callers take priority eight seven seven nine, ninety
sixty six three sixty nine eighty seven, seven ninety nine.
Fox is bringing a gentleman, very knowledgeable. He's a frequent
caller to my The Bernie Frattle Show on weekends.
Speaker 1 (34:33):
Say hello to Kyle in Vegas. Hey Kyle, what are
you doing up so late? Man? What's going on?
Speaker 4 (34:39):
Bernie? I'm at working decided that you are going to
be hosting the show this week. So I'm all for it.
Speaker 1 (34:44):
Brother, I'm all under four wonderful here.
Speaker 4 (34:46):
I'm up, I'm darker, I'm dark, I'm ready, I'm wired. AnyWho,
I got a couple of I got a couple of
things for you from somewhere out there. Matt Eberpost is
still holding on to that time. Now, Okay, you deserve
every bit of that.
Speaker 1 (35:00):
Kyle.
Speaker 6 (35:01):
I'm never going to let that go.
Speaker 4 (35:03):
I mean it, I'm never gonna let that go somewhere
out there.
Speaker 6 (35:06):
He's never going to get.
Speaker 4 (35:08):
A job again. And if somebody does about it, at
least all have four time outs it's ever needed. But
here's the big here's the biggest thing. And you know,
I'm a Chicago kid, born raised, I love my Chicago teams.
Everything like that. We're not even going to talk about that.
What we are going to talk about, though, is something
that I heard earlier. Who is more in line to
(35:29):
win the m v P this year?
Speaker 6 (35:34):
Is it?
Speaker 4 (35:34):
Actually? Do you think it was Josh Allen? I mean,
despite the body of work that Lamar Jackson has done
this year, right, the one thing that Lamar Jackson didn't do,
and that wasn't his fault, but he did kind of
lead the receiver out of bounds the toe tap that
wasn't actually a toe tap. And honestly, in my fallion,
(35:55):
it's the referees that are the m v P this
year from how they played the game thus far. I
want to know your take on that.
Speaker 1 (36:02):
Burn Well and.
Speaker 2 (36:04):
Stan Line, I'm the wrong guy to ask when it
comes to MVPs. For me, it's always subjective to how
people feel. It's like picking your favorite noodle and the
player spaghetti. They're both MVP calibern Now, the Ravens have
lost five games and Buffalo.
Speaker 1 (36:17):
Has only lost what two or three?
Speaker 2 (36:19):
Buffalo did beat Kansas City and they did beat Detroit.
But one of the things that bothers me is these
things should never be decided until after.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
The super Bowl is over, because what.
Speaker 2 (36:28):
If Lamar Jackson leaves the Ravens into the Super Bowl
and they win?
Speaker 1 (36:32):
How do you not give it to them? Right?
Speaker 2 (36:34):
So, I'm not a fan of MVP voting anyway, these
awards sometimes they're suppluved for us. That's not really a
great answer you want to hear, but it's the only
answer I got.
Speaker 4 (36:46):
No, No, listen, not to discredit what you're saying with
the whole thing. And I'm one dred percent agree with
you on that notion where we should wait until after
the season is over to credit who has a better
body of work. Did Uh It's almost like I can
do the Pro Bowl voting. Uh, you know we should.
We should give these guys the chance to build their
(37:09):
playoff resume also in order to solidify who actually is.
Speaker 1 (37:14):
That's what I see it. That's the only season that
matters exactly.
Speaker 4 (37:18):
It's like tax season, Chris. Everybody loves Christmas season, but
tax season is the best season if you really think
about it. You got more money coming back to you,
Unlike me. I got a couple of dollars getting taken
away from it. But you know, it is what it is.
But I'm gonna call the mat egle fleas and grab
that time out real requitt Bertie, you joy run here
so I love you, brother. I'm listening all week, turning
(37:38):
in all week.
Speaker 1 (37:40):
Buddy, We'll do it again, Yes, sir, we'll do all right.
That's kylein Vegas. Thanks Calor.
Speaker 2 (37:44):
Let's wrap up this, uh, this whole damn portal thing.
And I didn't you know I buried the lead on
the grad transfer. Those guys can transfer anytime they want
when they graduate through the end of spring.
Speaker 1 (37:55):
But Papa, Papa, now the portal is going to close
here eventually by the end of January. It's going to reopen.
Speaker 2 (38:00):
This second portal will open April sixteenth to run through
April twenty fifth, nine days. If you think that twenty
six hundred players was a lot last year that transferred
before New Year's More than twelve hundred FBS players entered
the portal during this Spring Windows cycle. So who's already
off and running? Old miss the complainer Lane Kiffin, whose
(38:21):
fingers must be tired, typing on Twitter complaining he's not
in the playoff. Hey, buddy, beat Kentucky when you're favorite
by fourteen, then pop off beat Louisville when you're favorite
by twelve. All right, But but Kiffin's rocking it so
far this year. He's got fifteen transfer portal commits in
some damn good ones from Florida, from markansof to Nebraska. Meanwhile,
(38:42):
Brian Kelly, the Lovable Brian Kelly. He made it clear
before the portal opened the Tigers were going to be
big buyers this cycle.
Speaker 1 (38:48):
He was right.
Speaker 2 (38:50):
LSU thirteen transfer portal commits. They've completely remade their secondary
two potential starting cornerbacks. They got a guy from Florida State,
they got another guy from Kentucky, another stuff from Mississippi State.
LSU might be better next year. Finally, number one, don't
look now. Somehow people want to go to Lubbock, Texas
nothing wrong with Lubbock. If you're Matt Davis. Seventeen transfer
(39:13):
portal commits, the Red waves are checked at The Red
Raiders are making big time waves this year. They got
an offensive lineman out of Illinois State whose rank number
one is the overall interior offensive lineman, and the Red
Raiders are seriously about competing for a league title next year.
They got a coach, Joey McGuire. And the bottom line
(39:33):
is the transfer portal is off and running. Hey, what
was the most recognizable moment of bull season this year?
And Bull season is not done? Nothing's gonna top This
has to do with a confection. I'll tell you the
whole story coming up. Keep it locked. You're listening to
