Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello and welcome. It's our number four, hour four of
our radio program. Thumbs up or thumbs down on the
idea that the Seahawks have interest with a month ago
before training camp in Baker Mayfield. And how does Seattle
(00:21):
approach the Baker Mayfield sweepstakes? We talk about that, and
would Baker want to play in Seattle? Does the puzzle
piece fit? We discuss that and more right now in
our number four here it is help wanted. There's a
(00:43):
sign out there that says help wanted if you're a quarterback. Welcome.
In the beginning of another hour of the Bend Maller Show.
We are in the air everywhere, hanging out in the
passenger seat as we are double booked, coast stuck coast,
(01:04):
border to border and beyond. On the last and monumentally
powerful microphones of fs are emanating live from the griddle
flipping burgers all night into the morning the Fox Sports
Radio studios here somewhere at a secret location in the Northwood.
(01:26):
So I leave this hour coming from Pro Football the
Pacific Northwest. Now, we're not going to do another monologue
on the scandal involving Congress and Roger Goodell, who hemmed
and hod And said nothing. And Dan Snyder, who had
a cocktail and some finger foods in France. And we
(01:48):
are less than a month away from NFL training kims
mildly exciting the average team. Now, not all the teams
go the same day, but the average number of days
by twenty eight, twenty nine days until training camp begins
in the NFL s under a month. And one of
the teams that has popped back up pop just like
that on our radar is the Seattle Seal. So Pete
(02:13):
Carroll's team is said to be smitten with a quarterback
not currently on the roster. So you didn't see this,
and probably not a few Seahawks fids we're on in Seattle,
But if you're not in Seattle or Pacific Northwest, you
probably don't give a rat's ass about the Seahawks. But
this is interesting, all right, so let me fill you in.
(02:36):
We have learned that the Seahawks still have quote a
high level of interest in acquiring Cleveland Brown's quarterback Baker Mayfield. Hello.
Not only that, the reporting indicating that they're open to
giving him a new contract. Baker is playing the fifth
(02:57):
year option if he does play this year, NFL Insider
to see Anderson saying that Seattle is still in the
process of collecting information and insight into Bakers like one
of the great mysteries of life. So let us discuss.
It's very simple. The question is thumbs up or thumbs
down to the Seahawks having legitimate interest in Baker Mayfield.
(03:23):
So I am going two thumbs up on this, two
thumbs up the obligatory Baker Mayfield mallor monologue. I've got
Sherlock Holmes, Drew Carey, and mousetrap, and we'll combine all
of these things together, and we're gonna make the Barbican
nose is what we're gonna make, all right. So to
(03:43):
kick things off, the Seahawks, they have had a vacancy.
They've had a vacancy at that position ever since they
decommissioned Russell Wilson. Once mister Unlimited was unlift odd to Denver,
the open for business sign was flashing in front of
(04:07):
the team facility. So that part of the story is
painfully obvious. Now despite Pete Carroll upselling Drew Locke and
Gino Smith putting lipstick on a pig, all right, come on, huh,
that's just the ball coach turning cheerleader. That's typical Pete
(04:28):
Carroll stuff. But most of us were like, got come on,
you don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to solve the
riddle coming out of Seattle. It's one of these stories
where every man, woman, and child knows that Seattle has
a free space right there at the center of the
bingo card when it comes to the quarterback position. And
(04:50):
therefore Baker Mayfield makes sense, but he make a ton
of sense. I'm going two thumbs up here because the
idea of an NFL team going with Geno Smith and
Drew Locke and claiming they're trying to win games, I
find hilarious. Now, furthermore, how does Seattle approach this. Let's
(05:13):
assume the position which we have that they are interested
in the quarterback from the Cleveland football team not named
DeShawn Watson. So how does Seattle approach the Baker Mayfield sweepsticks.
The answer is slow and study, Slow and study, because
even though they need a quarterback, it's not a high
(05:36):
priority that it has to be this particular quarterback. Because
if I had my choice, and I could have Baker
Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo. I would rather have Jimmy Garoppolo. Now,
the problem with Garoppolos he gets hurt all the time
and he's wobbly. But Baker Mayfield's wobbly, and it seems
like it's just worse, just just worse on a lot
(05:58):
of levels. And Jimmy Garoppo is likely going to get
released by the Niners. You can stay in the division,
get an opportunity to play. But we're talking about Baker
Mayfield here. And so the way you approach it, if
you're Seattle, you're like, not a high priority. If it happens, great,
And he's like going to the store and you get
a sample, you're not. You're not going to the store
looking for samples unless you're like me. But if you
(06:20):
find a sample, you're like, I'll take but on your terms.
Pete Carroll is like Drew Carey hosting a game show.
If the price is right and it's okay, I like
Baker Mayfield, I'll get the showcase showdown. I'll do that.
And so the Seahawks here are they have to be patient,
and they've been very patient. They have had months, months
(06:45):
to pull the trigger and they have it. So what
are they waiting for. That's the part of the story
which you can't really put that part together because if
they really wanted the player, Baker Mayfield announced back in
March that he is persona non grata with the Browns
and he wanted out of there, and so then the
(07:05):
Russell Wilson trade happened and nothing nothing. So Mayfield now
would he be an improvement over Drew Locke and Geno Smith.
So I'm not in my head yet, but a slight upgrade.
I don't think it's enormous. I don't believe it's enormous now.
All that said, you don't get too carried away here
(07:28):
because you are you are what your record says you are.
And Baker Mayfield has been food bar. That's that's the quarterback.
He's food bar. Now. He's not as food bar as
Drew Locke was in Denver, and not as terrible as
Geno Smith was back in the day with the Jets.
But it is fair to say that Mayfield had a
(07:49):
hole in his ozone layer in Northern Ohio. He buckled
with the Browns teammates. The biggest referendum on Baker Mayfield.
His teammates didn't like the fact that one of his
teammates used their father to help escape the shackles of
the Browns huddle to get away from Baker Mayfield. Not
(08:10):
only that, and then blossomed Hello O b J. His
career was on the skids in Cleveland. He gets to
La La Lane and he is back on top. Not
on top on top, but he's certainly much better player
than he was with the Browns with Baker Mayfield, and
(08:31):
was in the super Bowl playing well, he got hurt,
Rams won the Super Bowl and all of that after
he forced his way out to get away from Baker Mayfield.
Now Brown's ownership they signed up thinking about this, there
is another indictment on Mayfield. They chose Deshaun Watson, creepy
DeShawn Watson, the alleged predator who just pulled out his
(08:54):
check book and wrote giant cartoon size checks to twenty
of the women accusing him in a pervert He paid
them off. And then the Browns owners are that, well,
we need an adult in the room, and that's the
guy they picked. Hello, all right, party shot. Would Baker
Mayfield want to play in Seattle? So this is another
(09:16):
one of those things where it takes two to Tanga.
We know that take two to the tanker. But regardless
of that, Baker Mayfield has very little leverage if his
plan is to stay in that business. He has very
little leverage if he wants to sniff the field as
a regular starter. There are only a couple of teams
he can go to, and this is the top option
(09:39):
if you want to be on a team, play and
have a chance of being decent. Because Caroline has come on,
forget about it. The other option that Mayfield has is
to play the waiting game and wait for one of
the other starting quarterbacks to get hurt. There are rumors
that Jamis Winston, for example, in the Bayou, is not
(10:02):
fully healthy, and there are concerns that the Saints might
have a problem there at the quarterback position. Obviously that's
the case, they would have a problem there. So you
have to play the cards you're dealt. And at this
point in the poker game, Baker Mayfield his options are limited,
and he's wherever he goes. We're Seattle, Carolina, your name.
(10:24):
He's got to build a better mousetrap and and acknowledge
that whatever he was doing in the locker room wasn't
working because guys were running away from the Browns to
get away from from Baker Mayfield. So do better be
better now? The NFC West a month before training camp
is a solid division. The Rams are rocking and rolling
(10:45):
right now, the reigning champs. They're at the very top
of the pyramid of power. The forty nine ers have
a good infrastructure, but they've got a loose cannon, a
wild card at the quarterback position in Trey Lance. Cardinals. No,
not even really trying with alligator arms. The worst playoff
game I've ever seen in my life. Alligator arms Murray
(11:06):
against the Rams. What an embarrassment? Murray. Alligator Arms Murray
fades like photographs as the season goes on. So then
you have the Seahawks. The Seahawks are a middling team,
but they do have a couple of legit pass catchers
in dk Metcalfe and Tyler Lockett. And it would be
(11:28):
similar if Baker Mayfield went to Seattle, would be similar
to Cleveland. The Browns ran, ran, ran, ran early and often,
and mixed in the past. That's the way Pete Carroll
likes to play. Not a run not a past team,
rather a run team with a decent quarterback and a
few things going their way, then Seattle, the ceiling for
(11:50):
them would be like ten and seven. That's ten and
seven likely gets you in the playoffs. But there's a
lot of a lot of things that have to go
right to get to But that's where we are with
Baker Mayfield at this point in the story. All Right,
it is the Bannet Maller Show. You want to comment
on that or anything else. Big day in the NBA.
The NBA Draft is tonight, tonight, tonight tonight. Your level
(12:18):
of interest in the NBA draft? What is your level
of interest? One to ten? My level of interest in
the NBA draft itself, the actual draft, not the trimmings
that go around it, not the stuff thing, not the
mashed potatoes, not the cranberry sat My level of interest
in just the draft one to ten, two two, but
(12:45):
the other stuff the side dishes. What is my level
of interest in the side dishes? Well, the side dishes.
That's like an eight point five. That is an eight
point five because I want to see the trades. I'm
all about the trades. Where's the dight and gonna go
up go? Where's he gonna end up here? What about
Russell Westbrook. Does he actually get traded. There's a lot
(13:08):
of those parts of the story that I am interested
in because that's that's the stuff that drives conversation on
a show like this. Not the draft pick, like Jabari Smith,
who was supposed to be the number one picked by
the Orlando Magic. It does not, It does not move
move the needle too much. Not in these parts. Should
(13:28):
I reveal the player that I'm most excited about in
the draft, of one guy I think will actually be
a big star in the NBA. I will reveal that,
but I'm gonna make you wait for it, and Eddie
will drop by a double dose of Eddie. We're gonna
have buck Now, we'll get to all that, and we
will do it next block Bark Bark, Bark, Buck Box.
(13:53):

It's Ben Maller. NBA Draft Tonight Tonight the NBA Draft
and the the player, the one player off the top pics.
And we don't get carried away with the draft like
(14:36):
anything after like this tenth pick, we don't get too
excited about. But the one player I circle might pick
the click in the NBA draft. I have no idea
where this guy's gonna go. And if he gets drafted
by like Sacrament or something like that, he's screwed. He
won't be any good. But Jaden Ivey is the guy.
(14:56):
He's a guard from Purdue. That's the guy, super fast
as some player a little bit in the Big Ten,
and I believe his game translates to the way the
NBA's played these days, where you're not as you're not
guaranteed with any of these guys. But like Chet Holmgren
seven feet tall, one hundred ten pounds, I believe or
(15:19):
close to that. We'll see what happens anyway. All right,
I would take some calls. And also we have pucked
the world coming up in a bit with Eddie. We
are excited about that and you can join us at
eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox is the number
eight seven seven nine nine six sixty three at six
nine is I wait for my board to be reset.
(15:40):
The Mallard militia very active on Twitter at Ben Maller
and you can join the conversation there at Ben Maller
as well. And a lot of reaction to Cooper Loop
getting locked out of the studio last Hour. People had
interesting things to say about how that all went down
that we can read many of those on the air. Uh,
(16:03):
she will skip over that. A lot of people reacting
to ask Ben from last hour, why don't we Why
don't we just go to the fun These are not
worthy of being right, Let's go to credit card. Gordon
in Waterloo in Canada, Hello credit Card. Maybe I should
(16:30):
have read those those tweets. Maybe that would have been
better than this. All right, you know who's always there,
who never lets me down? Who holler? And James in Minneapolis, Minnesota,
Hello holler and James Holler. He's just coming through for
your big Bend. You're always there. You're my lifeline. Holler
and James and I know during this call, we're not
(16:52):
gonna talk about the Twins. We're not gonna talk about
the Vikings or the Timberwolves. We're certainly not going to
discuss Tammy and Montana. Is that correct? Direct? With Ben
HomeGrid from Minnesota to be a good pitch and the
NBA draft, Ben Hogan a skinny kid on a busy
(17:14):
hot enemy. So again, just for the recordation, no, no,
hold on, no, no, no, we want to get this
on record. So what is the person's name here that
you are picking to be the breakout star in the
draft tonight? Ben, He's a surprise. Pit that's that is
a surprise. I agree with you that we have a
(17:35):
big surprise. I agree is that is that the brother
of Chat Homegren. I don't know what ken of brother
he is. I don't even know if he's a real brother,
but we come down home is your hot take right there?
(17:58):
That's a great take. But Ben Homes is him star
in the making. He's a skinny kid. Wait on them
when he gets in the NBA come up like ye
let me tell you something right now, because you just
said what you said. I am now the biggest Home
Grun fan there is. I hope this guy turns out
to be a great star. That would be wonderful, be great.
(18:21):
Just you Ben, come out. I know I for some reason,
all the mock drafts they said he was named Chet.
But now you're you're educating me. I had no idea
he was named Ben. No, man, we love big Bench.
Benjamin's that favorite name and that favorite number on a
(18:41):
hundred dollar bill. That's right. Like if you had a pet,
you would name it Benjamin, right, if you had a
dog or a cat or something like that. Instead of
calling him Ben in the movie Willard, I got him Benjamins,
like Michael Jackson. Man, the two love us. We have
(19:01):
a ship. Then you know how we release you. Oh,
then we really care about you. Okay. No. Singer Holler
(19:23):
and James on stage reforming and he doesn't even realize
how many people right now are cringing. But that's the
beauty of Holler and James. That's the magic of Holler
and James. And remember, if you do watch the draft
to night, it's not ched homebren From and Zagon. No, no,
no, no no, no, it's Ben homebren Man, A lot of
(19:47):
these draft publications got it wrong. They kept calling them chet.
I love the fact that Holler and James, though, knew
the guy was from Minnesota, and that's why he found
the guy who's the guy from Minnesota, and then he
just go with that and he did. Any golden Gopher
is going to be drafted? Probably not, Probably not in
the draft to I've not gone that deep in the
(20:09):
weeds in the second and third round of the drest.
Speaking of dogs, though we had the dog show best
in Show, bad job by us. We were supposed to
do the the canine pick him. We did not do
the canine pick him. Did you see the dog show?
Were you're watching Eddie the Dog Show? And check that out?
It was. It was on one of the TVs here
in the in the news room when I came in.
(20:30):
Not at Madison Square Garden. It was a terry in Terrytown,
a little upstate there. My cousins used to live in Terrytown.
But anyway, they had the dog show and the big
winner there a bloodhound named Trumpet. The one hundred forty
six Westminster Kennel Dog Club Dog Show wrapped up on
(20:51):
Wednesday night, So this is historic. This it's the first
time that a bloodhound has ever been atop the mountain
and dogged them as the top the top dog. Take that, Fidata. Yeah,
that's right. Just think gears. From now we'll tell our
grandkids and their dogs we were there. We remember the
(21:15):
first time ever a bloodhound. God are done. We don't
need no mauns, we don't need no cats. We need
more dolls. Right, let's go to Manuel in Guardina, who
I would imagine is going to be very fired up
and we'll be coming out like a flamethrower here at
John in Tacoma. But let's say hello to Manuel in Guardina.
Hello Manuel, if Benny, Yeah, Man, you're gonna have to
(21:38):
reset that nobody who called me out because I never
heard them. Hey, you chump, if you're listed fell, if
it's not after a bad time, I'm gonna put you
to sleep right now. Don't worry about who I go
after you, don't worry about man. Well, can you turn?
I know you're in a you're you're at the portavel.
(22:00):
Can you make it any louder there? Manuel? Yeah, I
can't be If you want some me till day when
you want to go bo off to God because you
know what, being a former Summers, they only visit on
the site now, I smush piece is a crap like
you every day of a year, all right, any time.
(22:22):
But that show up from wherever he would from wants
a piece of Manuel Martin, matt In m LA come
at me homie. All right, man, Well there goes John.
If you're you're still listening, your buddy, Johnathan Coleman, you
would like to get into the octagon there with Manuel.
Were you accused of fighting below his weight class? Taken
(22:46):
on lightweights? That's what you said. You have implied that.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Ben Maller
Show weekdays at two am Eastern eleven pm Pacific. Hey,
I'm Doug gottlie The podcast is called All Ball. We
usually talk all basketball all the time, but it's more
about the stories about what made these people love their
(23:07):
sport and all the interesting interactions along the way. We
talked to coaches, we talked to players, We tell you stories.
You download it, you listen to it. I think you'll
like it. Listen to All Ball with Doug gottlieb on
the iHeartRadio app Apple Podcast or ever you get your podcast.
So the golf news continues to resolve around the Live
(23:29):
Golf Series. We talked about it yesterday or day before,
where brooks Keepka is the next big name or the
latest big name to leave the PGA Tour. Apparently one hundred,
one hundred and twenty five million dollars for brooks Keepka
to sign with you Live Golf Series. That's his price, Eddie.
Everyone's got their price. That's his price. Believe he's made
(23:51):
thirty eight million in his career. PG eight tour earnings
down you done. There's a lot of people doing think pieces.
You turn the money down. Like I said, when you
consider he's made, he's been very successful and thirty eight
million dollars is nothing to sneeze at. But when you
get one hundred million, one hundred and twenty five million
just for signing, I mean, you know Rory Maco and
(24:12):
all those guys can do. Some people are bringing up well,
look down their nose at him. But I'm I don't
blame him one day. Yeah I don't either. I've heard
the argument from people saying, well, what if the Saudi
government decides this is a one year thing, and then
that's it and all these guys can't go back to
the PG eight Tour, and I'd say, okay, they don't
ever have to work again. They can play golf. They
can move to Florida, they probably live there and just
(24:33):
go to course to course to course, the club, the club,
the club, and play golf whenever they want. And they
don't want to play golf anymore. They don't have to
play golf anymore. And for the big name guys, they
can still play in the majors at least for now.
And the Royal and Ancient, which runs the Open Championship
in Saint Andrews next month, has said they will allow
the Live Golf Series players to compete in that tournament.
(24:54):
So there you go, all right, thank you for that. Hey,
we'll go right back to the second here. I did
see some big NBA free agent news. Did you see
who's now available on the free agent market? Who? Kendall Jenner? Yes,
the tabloids reporting that she's broken it up with the
(25:14):
Devin Booker, the Sons Theirs. Isn't there a rule that
she has to date another NBA player though, if she
is officially done with Devin book E, I think e
Entertainment TV. They're reporting that. So that's the kind of
news you need on the radio, you do. Let's get
back to Eddie right now, get you cut up on
(25:35):
all the hockets, puck. The world is what it is
right now. And mister Hockey himself a man who said
at the camp of Bay Lightning, We're gonna win the
Stanley Cup. Yeah, not looking so good right now. Now,
coming from the man who said the Boston Celtics will
win the NBA title, I'm in good company. Apparently, nine
best to nine, they're good. Best to nine, they got it.
(25:57):
So we are through four games in the NHL Stanley
Cup Final, the color Avalanche on the verge of winning
the Stanley Cup. ABS have won Games one and four
and overtime and then blow out Tampa Bay in Game two.
One more win in Colorado will capture the third Stanley
Cup in franchise history, and their first is two thousand
and one. For Tampa Bay, they'll have to win three
consecutive games to capture their third straight Stanley Cup, as
(26:17):
they are down three games to one, and that has
happened once in the history of the NHL. The Toronto
Maple Leafs won three straight to defeat the Detroit Red
Wings in nineteen forty two. The only time it's ever
happened in the NHL got one minute a time, one
period at a time, one game at a time. That's
a good, good coach speak right there now. The last
time it happened in sports in the four major North
(26:40):
American sports twenty sixteen had happened twice. The Cavaliers came
back down three one in the NBA Final to beat
the Warriors, and the Cups were down three one against
the Indians and came back and won the World Series.
So we'll see Game five coming up Friday in Denver.
NHL handed out its major awards on Tuesday. Toronto Might
Plays star Austin Matthews wins the Heart Trophy as league MVP,
voted on by the media. He's the third American born
(27:01):
player to win the award. He was born in California
raised in Arizona. Also took home the Ted Lindsay Award,
that's the MVP award has voted on by his fellow players.
Igor Shusturkin of the New York Rangers won the Vezina
Trophy for the league's top goalie. Calton Lacaro the color
Avalanche won the Norris Trophy, handed out to the league's
top defenseman, and Maritz Cider of the Detroit Red Wings
won the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year. Yeah,
(27:22):
I just realized. If Colorado wins the Cup, a friend
of the show will likely be featured at the parade.
Parker the Snow though that's true, also part of the celebration,
Brady Quinn's brother in law will have won the Stanley Cup.
Jack Johnson, a defenseman for the Yeah, he's married to
Brady's daughter. Who now he might Brady might have been
(27:42):
at the game last night. He lives in Florida's I'm
not sure. We'll have to ask him about that next
he lives. I think he can afford it. Yeah, anyway,
so he still got some of that NY. I think
he just got a Jonas Knox money. Does he have that?
He's got He's got a gig working for Fox, I believe. Yeah.
The last time I heard, oh TV, Yeah, TV pays
more college football. Nashville Predators are on the verge of
(28:04):
being sold to sixty three old billionaire Bill Haslam, who
was the former governor of the state of Tennessee from
twenty eleven to twenty nineteen. He's apparently they would have
a minority owner to start the team is calling it
a multi phase purchase transaction. He'll eventually become a majority
owner in a few years. More than a dozen individuals
own stakes in the Predators on the existing ownership hierarchy.
(28:25):
Sportaco values the Predators at six hundred and eighty million dollars.
Forbes estimates Hamslom's nets worth is two point three billion.
If his name sounds familiar, he is the brother of
Cleveland Brown's owner Jimmy Haslam, and they founded that pilot
Flying Jay chain of truck stops which is in North America,
and that's how they got there. Are there any who
would be the equivalent of hockey of DeShawn Watson because
(28:48):
that guy would be available to Haslam family. They have
support to John watsifill, maybe there'd be a hockey equivalent
on that. Nothing's coming to mind immediately, although there is
some scandalous news coming up in a moment. Oh John
to John Tortorella officially named head coach and the Philadelphia Flyers.
He's got six hundred and seventy three career wins in
twenty NHL seasons, guided the Lightning to the Stanley Cup
(29:10):
title in twenty oh four, right the Guys a Stanley
Cup fander, Dallas Stars hired Pete Dubos their next head coach.
He's coached fifteen seasons in the NHL, has five hundred
and thirteen career wins. He led the New Jersey Devils
and Sentencey Sharks to the Stanley Cup Final, although they
lost both times. Paul Maurice is your new head coach
in the Florida Panthers, who decided not to bring back
interim head coach Andrew Brunette, despite the fact he guided
(29:30):
the team to the President's Trophy for the most poets
points in the NHL this past season and his team
scored more goals than naded their team in the NHL.
Brunette had taken over for I guess they didn't believe
that he was you know, he did take over a
great situation. He said the wrong thing. You can't say
at the time. He can't say it, Eddie to somebody
(29:51):
in management. That's what I'm going. Yeah, I don't know,
he said somebody. I thought they should have given him
the job, but Paul Marie seven hundred and seventy five
career NHL coaching wins in parts of twenty four seasons
and the NHL he was the head coaching Winnipeg last year.
Vatton Oilers did remove the interim tag from Jay Woodcroft.
He takes over for the fire Days Tippett. He had
a twenty six nine and three record. Have to take
(30:12):
over for Tippett and guided the Oilers to the Western
Conference Finals. This is his first full time NHL head
coaching job, but we still have head coaching vagancies to
be filled in Detroit, Chicago and Winnipeg. Washington Capitol Center
Nicholas Backstrom underwent hip surgery and that's put his career
in question. He's that team's all time leader and assist
second and goals only to Alexander Ovetskin. He's played fifteen
(30:33):
years in the NHL, all with Washington and has had
some lingering hip issues. And finally, the Canadian government is
