The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio. Greetings,
Welcome inside, Happy Wednesday, Happy National S'mores Day, The Jason
Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon. Hobo who
was celebrating National Smores Day by heating up marshmallows, putting
(00:46):
them between his fingers and just rubbing them all around
and touching things all around his house. Well, I mean
that's okay. I did see someone with a s'mores cal
zone they were offering at a neighborhood restaurants. I didn't
get over over to get one today, but I did
uh take the screenshot. No. I spent the day celebrating
the seventy fifth birthday of Ian Anderson making card aneath
(01:08):
us ah yes, because there was not running down his nose.
Well it is one line in one song. But yes, yes,
very very eclectic and diverse catalog over the fifty plus
years of Jethrow Tull. But yeah, that was my day
running around. Went to a dentist. No, it's gonna be
(01:29):
three to four months possibly. Wait no, no, no, what dude,
Come on, no, PO can get a proper fit and
do this right. You had a bay of a bad dentist, man, No, no, no, no,
my dentist rocks. No. I just gonna jam something in
my mouth. Your dentist can find. Dude, You've been without
a front tooth now for a week. People aren't without
(01:50):
front teeth for that long. I think you're dentist is
just you've been catfished by a dentist. Your dentist is
just trying to get money from you over the next
few months. Man, you gotta they gotta get that thing faster.
These are front guy I've been working with for a decade. Yep.
It's been a long slow con hoping that eventually one
of my teeth would get broken and that they need
(02:10):
to do a fix and at that point chut ching.
Come on, man, better than that, we have to make
sure that the color matches. We have to make sure
that we take the right X rays. Don't know. Now
it's a debate. I gotta go see an oral surgeon
so they can decide what they want to do. See.
Of course, they're just bleeding you for money, man, And
trust me, this is why people don't you wanted me
to just show up at the studio so that you
(02:32):
can give me a pair of fliers and and we
can just take care of it. Why wouldn't you get
a gold tooth or or then just get a tooth
like I got a gold tooth in my mouth. I'm
okay with it. I mean it's all the way in
the back. You can't see it, and I got a
gold turn desire for such you gotta have. You gotta
have a front tooth. Thill, buddy, how are you gonna
working on it? Doing? Just fine? Go into a lot
of liquid so I'm good. Yeah, but that's not fun. Yeah,
(02:54):
it's tough for to eat a sandwich. You want to
be able to eat a sandwich. It's okay, And I
don't need you're getting taken your it's just taking it.
That's what's happening right now. It's it's I'm gonna be okay.
I I have the card and the business information. Tomorrow morning,
we'll see if we can get on the books. Now
it's possible I can get and implant the same day
(03:14):
and we we clap hands and we move on. But
it's possible. I can't do. You have to get at
least to see. You have to leavest get a loaner
tooth working. No, no, no, that's that's that's gonna be done.
The permanent solution is going to take a while. It's okay,
so you're getting a tooth until you get the permanent tooth. No,
that's right. Why did you tell you make it sound
like I can't get a tooth from it? Why't tell
(03:34):
me you're getting a loaner tooth? Well, you wanted to
go straight to the get get the fixed like you
made it seem like I'm not getting it. You could
have said right away, I'm getting a tooth. You could
have said that. I could have been like most Americans
and just said, you know what, I'm afraid of the
dentist and I'm not gonna go. Oh see, that doesn't
help anybody. And then I'm running around like I was
either fighting with Shamus in the w w E or
(03:57):
or maybe uh I was hockey gooned or worse. All
I've been doing is drinking a bunch of sweet tea
on the back porch and one of them finally fell out.
I mean one of those three things. Or I took
a nice right cross from some random person at a
bar when I walked up and randomly said to someone,
how you doing, and didn't realize that that was gonna
(04:17):
be a problem. Sometimes I don't know. There's lots of
stuff that could. In the end, I'm not worried about it.
I'm not in any pain. If it offends your sensibilities,
I'm sorry, but that's you. I'm looking out for your
oral hygiene and better well being. And you're sitting You're going, yeah,
it's gonna be a while. You're gonna be out of
You're gonna sit here and say, I need money, man,
(04:38):
I gotta get a tooth. I don't don't. I don't
have it. My my my insurance is all tapped out.
What do I do know it I am gonna be
out of pocket a bunch of money. You'll be better,
and you'll be better call harmon, You'll be pulling all
kinds of stuff, and I got a couple of griffs
I'm already working on since I know you would squeal
at the first bright light like sip, but which was
(05:00):
taking you to task? You will know nothing. I have
no dog in this hunt. I just want you to
get a tooth. I'm fine. I want you to be.
I want you. I'm still pretty and and right now
it gives me a little bit of something extra to
talk about. It's all good. I want you to be.
My kids are embarrassing, of course, of course, but I
want you to be tough and ruthless and not rough
(05:21):
and toothless. That's what I want for you. That can
be both. Wow. Well that's that's four things. Actually a
powerful and attractive man. It all works together. It's it's
all fine, alright, alright. I mean I am wearing the
UH really appropriate. It doesn't matter what you think rock
ty shirt right now. So that you just trying to
(05:43):
help you there, I appreciate that. I really just think
you know you you really got out of sorts last week?
Could it happened like that? Like you had been personally
jabbed in the UH? I felt bad for you because
you're my best friend, and here you are. You know,
you have a front tooth, and I wanted you have
a front tooth. Alright, as long I guess, as long
(06:04):
as you're no. At this point, I don't have any
any Nelson months is in my life, pointing and laughing. Ha. No, No,
I don't love any of that. If I was a
little bit younger, if I was a school age kid,
then maybe maybe there's something to it. Alright, alright, It
either that or I beat their ass too, So it's
all good. Alright, alright, fine, I'm glad. I thought by
today I had a couple of days off. I'm gonna
(06:25):
come back. You're gonna have a full, you know, mouth
of teeth again. And it's still not the case. But okay,
I got WrestleMania tickets and online on an oral surgeon.
There you go. There, there's my there's Wednesday. I made
a mountain of carnitas after a terrible restaurant experience. They
were terrible, high price place carnitas were subpar. And now
(06:46):
I'm watching the White Sox beat the Royals. All is good.
I hear that's what they say. Oral hygiene moves at
its own pace. You can't hurry up and get something done.
Not gonna happen. Well, but here, man, life, life doesn't
just stop. I got other stuff to do. I know
it does. But that's like the most important thing is
you to get a tooth. I mean, what what else
is more important than that? You gotta get a tooth.
(07:07):
Getting the kids ready for school? Now, they can get
themselves ready. They're old enough, they can get ready themselves.
They can fill out forms. They've been They've been forging
your name for five years by now, no doubt about that.
You gotta get a tooth. Man you got. Dad says,
it's all right, It's all good. Twitter and how about
a Fresca Mike hat swollen dome The Jason Smith Show
(07:29):
with my best friend Mike Harmon. Uh, big story today
out of the NFL. A lot of big NFL today.
But the Browns say they expect to start to Shawn
Watson at quarterback in their opener on Friday against Jacksonville,
the team making the announcement just before they boarded the
flight to Jacksonville. Of course, Watson and the Browns are
(07:50):
waiting to see if he's going to be suspended longer
than the six game suspension. He was handed for violating
the Personal Conduct Policy by Sue Robinson last week. Uh.
This kind end of dovetails in with the Pro Football
Talk report that Roger Goodell would like this suspension, whatever
is decided by the the arbiter, to go into effect soon.
They don't want him on the field on Friday. I
(08:11):
can't play in the NFL. Is a bad it's a
bad optic. He's a bad headline that he's playing. And
when it comes down to this, with Goodell now really
ramping this up, and the Browns are saying, we're gonna
move ahead and until you tell us differently, and the
NFL p A is waiting, how's this gonna come out?
Are we gonna counter suit? What are we gonna we
gonna do? The NFL Wenna, we do all this stuff. Uh.
(08:34):
The first thing about this is that remember when we
told you what it would be like if DeShawn Watson
played this season. You're gonna get a taste of exactly
what it's going to be on Friday Night, because I
because I told you, if he does play, he is
such a bad headline, he's a bad story. I'm upset
that he still even could potentially play this year that
(08:58):
he is explos his team will be covered and we
will move on. There will be no debate of Deshaun
Watson playing, how well is he how how how far
can he carry the Browns, because you know what, we've
had none of that this year. We've had none of
that because his story is such a bad one that
it's a turn off for the audience. And we've talked
about this, and you know, generally we've gotten the point
(09:19):
the last year or so where anything political, even in sports,
is such a turn off, which it is because you
can't you can't escape and everywhere else in life. And
so when we had stuff that, hey, here's a political
arena is into sports, and we talked about it, that
was acceptable a couple of years ago. Now, I think
people who listen and if and if we're talking something
political to sports, boom, I'm done because there's no win
(09:41):
because someone's either very upset or someone agrees with you
and they're still upset. Right, politics have everybody upset. The
same thing with Deshaun Watson here is that his story
is a bad one and people are upset and and
of just the fact that he's playing is bad, the
fact that he has never shown any responsibility. The fact
that his punishment was very light. Uh, this is this
(10:01):
is such a bad look that when he plays Friday,
his night will be reported. Deshaun Watson played one series,
his first series in a year. He was three out
of five for twenty six yards, and you know, then
gave way to Jacoby Brissette, who was this this, this, this, this,
and we're gonna kind of move on. There's not gonna
be a Hey a Sports Center breakdown after the game
(10:23):
of DeShawn Watson because interest in him and watching him
play is just not gonna be there. So when he plays,
the results will be rewarded, recorded, they'll be reported because
the Browns play in the NFL, and people care about
the Browns and people care about the teams playing against
the Browns, and it's part of the league. But as
far as hey is he gonna be somebody we talk
(10:44):
about that that that stirs the pot, like Tom Brady
or Baker Mayfield or Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers or No,
it's not gonna happen. We're gonna we're he's gonna do
what he does and then we're just gonna move on
and you watch the lack of coverage post what the
area Watson this season? Yeah, I think it comes down
to if he's playing whatever, we don't get a ruling,
(11:06):
and he's on the field and he plays well, then
he'll be one of many stories. Right, sixteen games a
week at least for the first couple of weeks before
we start getting into the bye week, which has the
long tail. I think the last bye week this year.
There's a couple of teams in Week fourteen, But the
point being, there's plenty of other content. Now Friday against
(11:27):
Jacksonville is is would be a big deal because that
means that we still have this under consideration. So it
would be here's this couple of plays he did his
wave right, because right now, all the footage out of
camp is anytime someone can take a video of him
signing a football for a kid, talking to a kid
and smiling and being a part of the community as
(11:51):
it were. Uh, that's what's being promoted by a lot
of people in Cleveland right Nationally, it's all right, what's
the story? When are we getting an answer? So the
football right now has been second in terms of what
he's doing in camp. Right The only big story as well.
At this point he's still getting all the first team reps,
(12:12):
so Stefanski has had to answer to that, saying, well,
Jacoby is getting his work in and we're pleased. As
to Haslem right, he finally said something that made sense
and it was one, literally one sentence, And I think
Ornberger and I last night with you Off, I think
might have been the only people in the national media
that actually acknowledge that they didn't say something stupid again
(12:34):
and that they actually had something at the league meeting
quote will respect and honor the process. Does it give
us any anything else? Right? They still stand by that
Watson's remorse full and all those things which he's clearly
done the exact opposite, and his lawyers every chance they got.
But for what he he becomes as a story. If
(12:56):
he's on the field and he's performing well, then yeah,
he becomes an uncomfortable subject. But he's still part of
the National Football League, and it becomes an anti NFL
at that point that they haven't figured out how to
get him off the field. Not that you know he
won't still get his but if he's playing, now you
start getting into betting. Now, you get into fantasy et cetera,
(13:20):
and he becomes a viable player in season. As it
stands right now, not a lot of talk about him
because nobody expects him to be on the field, right
everybody's still just anticipating they got a really good roster.
But there's a giant question mark under center on all
your depth charts. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten
(13:42):
pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific. I mean, maybe Harmon's looking
through boxes looking for a tooth. I mean maybe maybe
discarded boxes could. By the by the way, the problematic
part of that hole open there is it that you
replace me with your daughter, is that it implies that
I am not adorable, which is categorically false. Either' gonna
(14:04):
say the part where the word hobo was thrown in
there like three Yeah, that's all right. I'll wear that
one a little bit. You know what you could be?
You know what, I think there's room for that, and
you could be the adorable hobo that Now, that is
a brand that does sound. It sounds like a doll
with and with no tooth up front. Right now, we
can really make that happen. I got a couple of
(14:25):
ripped up T shirts that are workout shirts. Let's go.
It sounds like a doll that Lisa would have in
the Simpsons, Mom, I lost my adorable hobo doll. And
you see the doll. It's got the it's got the
patchwork on it in the Shaunty little hat, my adorable hobook.
You know what one of my yeah, one of my
(14:46):
straw hats is is a little bit dirty. Something spilled
on it. Had a little bit of a stain that
we gotta work out. So that could be my hobo hat.
This works. What's that? That's my that's Daddy's special hobo.
We had one that was called Utility Blue for the
longest time. That is in uh Madaline's keepsake box that
(15:07):
she decided she used to love to steal it off
my head and wear it while we were out out
and about, and eventually she just said, I'm just gonna
take this now, so Utility Blue could make resurface as
well to give me options. Maya hobo looks all right
as long as long as he has options, Because you
want to be able to look like any like any doll,
you'd want to be able to change the looks. You
(15:27):
got to be able to access well and and in general,
life is all about your options. You want to have
some optionality in what you do. I'll tell you, uh, well,
uh you know, what do you do with that spit?
Take that damn hippy. I'll tell you this, Uh, Liga
(15:47):
is never gonna play us again. And All Stars and
soccer second year in a row, MLS All Stars when
they just beat Liga two to one, Carlos Velo scoring
the first goal for the MLS All Stars and they
want last year in a penalty shootout and they won
this year. Uh yeah, They're never gonna play us again.
Never gonna happen. I gotta say though, that skills competition
(16:07):
was pretty damn fun to watch, hitting the hitting the crossbars.
How many crossbar challenges if you you committed to in
the last month or so, Oh, we've done. We've done
a few of those. I'm a fan of those. Every
now and again. I can actually hold my own and
they get all mad, considering I have a really terrible,
terrible follows through. But you know, hey, you don't want
(16:29):
to go against that guy without a tooth. But fun,
But but I got a big leg, so you want
to do distance. I can play with you there. It
doesn't matter how it looks like, just matters that you
get as long as you hear the pain. Makesting exactly,
damn right the Jason Smith Show with my best friend
Mike Harmon. Uh. Polanco was just hit a three run
(16:52):
homer to give the Twins a three to league the Dodgers.
Uh Frostburg not very happy with this. Would like that
home run all to be thrown back, but it doesn't
like it's getting thrown back. I think people are keeping
it well. I'll tell you if you only heard what
he had to say. When Machado hit that walk off
last night, we had to dump him twice a lucky
excited utterances. It was a lucky swing. Oh look at
(17:17):
Freddie Freeman is crying as a runner pass. Okay, alright, alright,
that joke. You better call that guy exactly. Well, there's
a big quarterback controversy going on with quarterbacks on separate teams.
Wait what so on Saturday, we're getting the first preseason
(17:37):
game between the Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This week,
Tampa Bay and the Dolphins are having joint practices together,
which means Tom Brady into a Tuloa and I had
a chance to kind of hang out and talk football
with each other too. Did say he got to talk
to Tom Brady a little bit, but wouldn't elaborate on
what they spoke about. Tom, how do you play quarterback?
(17:57):
Do I throw the guys with my jersey's or the
other he's? Tom? Tell me so, Tom, theoretically, if you had,
say a guy like Tyreek Hill, for instance, how would
you best be able to communicate and get the ball
in his hands. I'm just asking for a friend of mine.
(18:20):
I mean, you were you had Randy Moss all those
years ago. How did that work? Yeah? No, it's fun.
Given all the givings of the last couple of weeks
in the National Football League, Tom, I get a lot
of criticism. You don't get a lot. What's the key
to that? All? Winning the Super Bowl? Okay? Like? How
many do I have to win? Like? Two? Three? Like?
(18:42):
Like how many I went platinum? Seven times? I should?
I should concert on keeping my job for this year.
That's a good point. That that's really a good point.
Yeah no, but thanks, I appreciate that. Hey, So, if
you could tell me the one secret to winning a
super Bowl, Like, like, what would it be? Like? It
is one thing that you would you could tell me
that would help me win, because I'd like to win one.
You know, you want a lot. I'd like to win
one here, you know, but if if you win that,
(19:05):
I can't win, Tom, how do you how do you
take the air out of a football? Because you know,
sometimes I get to football and it's got too much
air in it and I don't like it. I want
something I could really get my hands around. You know,
I can't really throw the ball that deep? So I
what what do I do? Tom? What's the best way
to do that? What you could do? Whatever the hell
you want? They're not checking. Have you ever seen a
box score that had a have air pressure in it? No,
(19:28):
they cared. They made a big deal out of it,
and then it went away. So, Tom, did you really
get like the exact plays ahead of time or was
it like disseminated to you, like, Hey, when they look
like this, this is the kind of defense they're gonna call.
Just tell you where they were gonna be. Like Jason,
it wasn't really a hip pad. It was his cell
phone masquerade masquerading and it would buzz you know, like
(19:49):
the guy that got caught with his cell phone last night?
Major league me, Tom, what's the perfect ratio of avocado
to toast? Like? What? Like? How much? And what kind
of toast? Does it need to be gluten retoast or
is it just any kind of toast works? How much
avocado is too much? You really just busted out the
gluten free? Did I did? I did? If I wear
your pajamas every night for a week while I throw
(20:11):
three touchdowns on Sunday, I'm not giving you my pajamas,
say I did? Just Can I just want to text her?
Can I take a selfie and then post on social?
You were able? You were able to take a couple
of days off at the you know last week. How'd
you pull that off? Uh? Now? The the conversation, of course,
(20:33):
turned to a my looking at my replacement over here
and Tom Brady with the reports the last week and
the Dolphins getting docked a couple of draft picks because
of impermissible contact start stemming from two and a half
years ago between the Dolphins and Tom Brady to come
in as a potential owner slash quarterback and Sean Payton
of the Saints to come in his head coach. Now,
(20:54):
when Tua was asked today, Hey, it's been a couple
of days. You got a chance to hang out with
Tom Brady. You got the game went up on Saturday.
You heard these reports swirling that they wanted Tom Brady
going all the way back to till How do you feel.
I think they were doing that in two thousand nineteen.
But then I came in. So, I I mean they
picked me. So, I mean, so it's twenty I mean
(21:19):
I'm still here. So yeah, So I mean I'm still here.
To me, that's all noise at this point. Hey, I'm
not great, but they picked me. So, I mean thought
I'm here though, I'm here. I mean, I got the
job and they picked me. So I'm not nearly as
good as it, but they picked me. Okay, First of all,
you heard him say at the end. There I'm still here.
It's just noise at this point. Um, okay. First of all,
(21:41):
they're not all in on you, all right to uh,
the Dolphins are not all in on you. Everybody knows
it and you know it. The Dolphins are ready to
replace you at a moment's notice. This is it. This
is your make or break. Here You're either going to
be the quarterback of the Dolphins after this year, or
Tom Brady is coming in because you know that's what
the Dolphins want. Stephen Ross isn't sitting things out for
the next few months, going, well, I lost that one,
(22:05):
lost a couple of draft picks. I'm not I can't
be around the team yet. No, No, he wants Sean
Payton and he wants Tom Brady. He's not gonna lose
those picks and still not get what he wants. Now.
It is a win win situation. It is a win
win situation because if the Dolphins have a great year
and Mike McDaniel is terrific and two it is terrific
(22:26):
and they win the division, they go on in the playoffs. Okay,
we don't need to move on because we got our
quarterback and we have our head coach. Everything is great.
But if not, that's what's gonna happen. Sean Payton will
come in as the head coach and Tom Brady will
come over as the quarterback. That's what's going to happen
in Miami. So, yeah, they're not all in on you.
You're only here for now. There is the window is
open for you to stay, but you have to be
(22:46):
absolutely lights out or you're getting replaced because everything with
the Dolphins is in place for after this year. If
there needs to be an overhaul, there can be an overhaul, right,
Mike McDaniel, That's a guy you can get rid of
in one year if you want to. He's not someone
that we went out and we hired him, and we
went through and he was sought after by so many
different teams. Now he was someone you hired. Okay, we'll
(23:07):
take a chance, right, because you have to have a
gut feel you take a chance on a head coach.
And but he is someone who if it doesn't work
and Sean Payton wants to come in, guess what. Sean
Payton is coming in and Mike McDaniel's gonna go be
a coordinator again someplace else. That's how it's going to work.
It's not like, boy, Mike Tomlin is here and oh boy,
Sean Payton might want to coach. You know, this is
Mike McDaniel. All right, this is a guy that's eminently
(23:29):
replaceable two a year. In your third year, we're gonna
know about you as a quarterback this year. I think
we know a little bit more about you last year.
But okay, here's some new weapons. You have really good
guys to throw two. Now you have more than one
really good wide receiver. You have seventeen thousand running backs.
Hopefully a couple of them can come through. You have
what you need to succeed this year. But don't for
a second think you are going to be replaced the
(23:49):
minute things go south. That's the truth for the Miami
Dolphins is that everything is for this year, and if
this year doesn't work, then Sean Payton's coming in, Tom
Brady's coming in, and the Dolphins are gonna have to
pay any end of penalty. They're gonna get the guys
they want because that's what they wanted going back three years.
You don't just stop liking someone just for because oh
you do you know? Listen, look if you are you
(24:12):
getting getting me stories about the kids, and listen, listen,
I will I will tell you. I'll explain this very simply.
Relationship circumstances. If you really like Let's say I really
like this girl as a sophomore, right, we're both sophomores.
I really liked her um and I wanted to date her,
but she had a boyfriend, and you know he was
I was out of hats to get. Yeah I could,
(24:32):
I wasn't right. Maybe I wasn't the kid yet. Maybe
I wasn't a kid yet. Maybe I was still you know,
you know five to five three didn't I didn't hit
my hulking. You were quite so good. That was. I
wasn't my hulking five seven. When I graduated high school
like I was. Maybe I was. She had a boyfriend, Okay,
all right, and then a year goes by and for
junior years, he still has a boy friend, but I
don't know, and then senior year comes, Wait a minute,
(24:54):
I guess she doesn't have a boyfriend. Okay, hey, I
still like her, right, she's still I still like her.
She's she's just as hot, she's just as smart as
as I like when she was a sophomore. This is awesome,
And so I tried to date her, but then the
ex boyfriend tries to get back in and she's like,
I don't know because I dated him for a long time,
like oh, what is this happening here? And then says,
(25:15):
you know what, let me let me figure this out.
Let me figure this out with him, and if it
doesn't work, I will go out with you and will
go to prom and all this kind of stuff. Okay,
guess what I'm doing. I'm waiting that out. You're not
looking at options. Of course I will. But here's the thing.
(25:35):
But great, I will look at other options, and I will. Okay,
I'll have another option, but that option has got to
be absolutely outstanding. If I'm gonna cut bait on this
option that I've wanted for the last three years. So
if I wind up meeting somebody, oh my god, she's awesome.
She's just as great as I think this girl is
gonna be. And oh I'm in heaven. Now we have.
What a great relationship we have? Now this has been
(25:57):
like the same music, like the same TV shows. Oh
this is great. Okay, but what are the hunts? It's
gonna be that great? And if I always have this
fascination for this girl that I've liked, that I've coveted
for the past couple of years, yeah, I think I'm
gonna do whatever I can. It's okay. Hey, now now
we're good. Now you're broken up. Great, we're going to
the problem together. All right. I got I got everything,
I got your corsage, I got my I got my cumberbunt.
(26:19):
I'm all set to go. We're ready, We're together now. Yeah,
you don't just stop liking somebody. Not that that happened
to me. You know there was You never stopped loving someone,
You just start loving somebody else. Look it up at
the country song and it's fantastic. Was that a Toby
Keith song? It wasn't. Okay, it's not. I was as
good as I once was, but I never song you
(26:41):
like so much? Why why I haven't brought that up
in months telling you, telling you that's right. In one year,
that's where it's gonna be. It's gonna be those guys
for the Dolphins, sounds gonna go. Maybe you're moved on
even though you're still your robust five seven. Maybe at
the gym right, maybe you haven't skipped like day and
maybe you're to find some other thing. I mean, look
(27:02):
sunk cost all those hours pining, waiting for the phone
to ring. Pause, Mike pause. You know, I say, Jason
and hitting the gym in the same sentence, I hit
the gym, Jim hits me. I hit the gym. There
it was It's like alf it was tight shirts rong,
Nelson Impression. Be sure to catch live editions of The
(27:25):
Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern,
seven pm Pacific. Hey, I'm Doug Gottlieb. The podcast is
called All Ball. We usually talk all basketball all the time,
but it's more about the stories about what made these
people love their sport and all the interesting interactions along
the way. We talked to coaches, we talked to players.
(27:48):
We tell you stories. You download it, you listen to it.
I think you like it. Listen to All Ball with
Doug Gotlieb on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts,
or ever you get your podcast. Joining us now on
the hotline, who is live from that game? We are
changing his walk up music just for this one time.
(28:09):
Oh my goodness, let's get excited. My god, just picturing
him walking through the field of corn to do an
interview with us John Paul Morossi wearing that jaunty little
hat that he had on for that promo. I appreciate
that very much. I did love that hat. I do
love the trumpets. But I'll begin by saying this, uh
(28:34):
with regard to the team that was here a year ago,
The New York Yankees. I still think, while I love
the trumpets, Jason uh, he's got a few more years
and a few more World Series rings to go before
he's gonna be able to equal Enter Sandman. That still
remains the New York Closer standard just based on success.
(28:56):
I love the way it's going right now when Diaz,
the way that the Mets are playing, and the trumpets
sound great, and I think it would be amazing to
hear them for a huge Subway Series game in August,
September or yes, October, but I want to hold off
on putting that in the Canada the number one song
(29:18):
ever for a closure in New York. Well, that's okay.
The show is tonight and it's going crazy on social media,
so I'm okay with that. Good and and so here's
my question, what what has what has taken so long
for this to catch fire? Because he's exactly but I
know and I can explain this to you because on Sunday,
the s n Y cameras isolated Diaz walking in from
(29:41):
the bullpen, the camera directly behind his shoulders as he
comes in to the music, the fans go crazy, and
once it was isolated on Monday morning and it came out,
it became a thing, and now the Edwin Daz challenges
starting to go around it, which people are now posting
their own entrances to work with the nark how music
behind them, which I'm gonna do that tomorrow night, coming
(30:02):
into work. So it's become its own thing. I know,
it's been around for a while. He's been doing it
for he went back to North, he went away from
went back to Narco last year. He's been great. Maybe
that's been the key to Daz all along. You just
had to stick with Narco all the way through. There
you go, and hey, that's it's now that you filled
me in on that. And by the way, full credit
to our colleagues at s n Y for both that
(30:24):
and then the the Red just absolute fury animation over
Buck show Walter's face when the pitch went high and
tight and and they had to be like whoa. It
was like one of those alarm alarm bell like warning, warning, warning,
and and Buck space was just uh superimposed beat red
(30:47):
with with the frustration. So I I love that. For me,
I'm all about the creativity and how you present the game,
which is what's making me really curious about how the
games did to go tomorrow, because to your point, we're
not sure before games there might be played here. Who
knows what? We don't really know, and so the important
thing is to savor the game tomorrow and to obviously
(31:10):
have the best production presentation you can have. We can't have,
I'm sure, the exact same presentation with with Costner walking
out and the players right behind them. It's gotta be
a little bit different. It's gotta be a little bit
different to make sure that you keep that originality. And
I honestly don't know what's gonna happen tomorrow, and I
love that. I want to be surprised as a member
(31:32):
of the audio could get an appearance by Timothy Buzzfield.
You have no idea, but we're waiting to see how
that's gonna flow. JP. What's the what's the vibe there overall? Right? Obviously,
last year, first year Yankees White Sox walk off home
run judge with a judge in blast, which will we'll
(31:52):
talk about him more in a moment, but what what
what's the vibe there this time around with the Reds
and the Cubs. Sure, so, obviously, as you point out,
perhaps the matchup not with the same casher in terms
of the current records. However, Uh, when you do go
back in the history of the site, in the history
(32:12):
of the game, you've got a lot of Cubs fans
in Iowa, so that they are short of the hometown
sentimental team. But then the Reds. You go back to
the premise of the movie and who defeated shoelas Joe
Jackson's team back in the Cincinnati Reds and what was
then my spoiler a century later, I'm gonna spoil it here. Uh,
(32:40):
that was that was a nine game series won by
the Red Legs five to three, So of a very
unique structure for the World Series at that point. Doctor.
So I think you know, we were here for the
minor League game last night, which and Mike, I appreciate
the mention of my John t hat because a lot
of time it was that was my Moonlight Moonlight Morosi tribute,
(33:04):
my Moonlight gram tribute, um. And so it was fun
and I was really grateful by the way that that
it was not too hot, because when you're wearing the
layer of the Moonlight Gram vest with the hat and
it's degrees with amenity, a little bit of a challenge,
So it wasn't that hot fortunately, But I think, guys,
it's it's the place. I was talking to one of
(33:25):
my colleagues today about this. You know, last year we
all came here for the first time and it was
such an amazing event. And to see this in the
corn field and the too manner some moment it was
it was something that you could not duplicate. And yet
the magic of this site is that every time you
drive up you get that same excitement of going to
(33:48):
this special place, because I think we've all seen this
in life and in different different walks of life. When
you experienced something for the first time, it's really powerful.
Whether it's you go to Paris for the first time,
you go to the Louver, whatever it might be, that
the first time in a magical place, and then you
get to see the reaction of someone else who's doing
(34:09):
it for the first time and experience it through their
eyes again and see it a little bit differently. It's
like it's artistic, it's it's it's a case of emotion
and the heart of why we do this and why
we love sports. And so for me, even though it's
not my first Gilder Dreams game, and we're not sure
what is gonna bring. What we do know is that
(34:30):
we've got a great game tomorrow night, and that a
lot of people at this site tomorrow. And Joey Botto
was tweeting about this actually today talking about the importance
of this movie and what it meant in his relationship
with his late father in playing catch with him when
he was a kid. That's that's why I want to
go back to the ballpark tomorrow to see how Joey
(34:50):
is emotional. That to me will matter because I followed
his career and I have a lot of respect for
Joey Botto, that that kind of a moment for me
will be as special it was the first time that
I saw, because I'm getting to experience this incredible place
through the eyes of others and and and to and
for me obviously in my role to help share their stories,
(35:10):
because that's that's why we're here. This is this is
the ultimate storytelling venue in baseball. All right, here's what
I watch you tomorrow night. If you were really into
if you're as into it as you say you are,
you need to dress like Burnt Lancaster's character when he
was Moonlight. Graham at the end when he was a doctor,
you'd where the doctors go. You gotta have the doctors gotscope,
(35:30):
you gotta have the hat, the mustache, everything. Yes, here's why.
Here's why Doc Graham was the greatest utility player of
all time. He had all of his tools in a
bag that was like the size of a bowling bag man.
He got a damn anything anything you need in in
(35:52):
all his gear was in that one bag. I love it.
He just it's an amazing story. Guys. His his character
the a and again, we all have our favorite scenes
in that movie when he describes to Ray Consella obviously
Kevin Costner's character in Chi is in Minnesota, the moment
(36:12):
that he wanted to have a triple and to wrap
his arms around the bag. And that speech is one
of my favorite. The James ol Jones speech is incredible. Obviously,
it's it's iconic. It endures. When Vince Gully reads it,
I think we all probably cry. But when when the
Moonlight Graham speech about what his dream is, it is
(36:33):
just it's perfect. And the way he describes the tingle
up your arms when you connect, it's just, guys, I mean,
this is this is why we're here. This is why
we do this, and I'm a little romantic about it,
but that's somethink. That's what you're supposed to be when
it comes to this place in this game. So really
honored to be here and and I can't wait to
see who the hero is going to be tomorrow night.
(36:54):
How do you not get romantic about baseball? That's what
it does. It gets us all the time. Uh, something
we see for the first time every night. Jason Smith,
Mike Armen, The Jason Smit Show with Mike Armen here
at Fox Sports radi our buddy John Paul Morosi at
John Morrosis where you find him on Twitter. Leave out
the h Hello mom, Uh, your son is in Iowa
(37:14):
covering a game. He may bring you for it. We'll see.
But JP, So we we've got the that game that
is obviously everybody's uh focus tomorrow. But look taken back
out and we mentioned the Yankees talking about them being
there last year and Aaron Judges heroics, but the team
themselves last eight weeks not so much so. While they're
(37:37):
in a bit of cruise control for the regular season. Uh,
is is it going to be a happy October? That's
a great question. And and my main concern right now
for the Yankees is their bullpen, and Clay Holmes has
all of a sudden looked mortal here in in recent times.
He had the microscopic e r A for the first
(37:57):
half and was all star closed in it out looking great.
You know what, here's the irony with the Yankees. You
look at their bullpen and the left right. I still
feel as though they're gonna need to count on a
rolldis Chapman at some point, and and they're gonna have
to be able to go back to him in the
key spot. He just though walks way too many batters
(38:21):
eleven actually eighteen walks and seven innings. It's just that's
not sustainable. And so I'm I'm starting to get a
little bit concerned, or maybe a lot concerned about the Yankees.
And the other part is, guys, I didn't really understand
trading Jordan Montgomery and when they did. I know he
doesn't strike out as many guys, but it just seemed
(38:43):
to me that that was a move that was not necessary.
I know that they certainly have some some starters coming
back in and Domingo Rman is there, and and I
just I didn't like what they did. I thought they
traded from their depth when they didn't have to, and
and looking at Bader, who's a really good defender, I'm
just not sure that that was really the need the
(39:05):
move they needed to make. So I think they've been
inconsistent and and yet, and yet they're still tied for
the best record in the American League entering today, and
there's no one in the East that I think is
is really on their heels. That Toronto has been way
too inconsistent, Boston has gone the wrong direction. So October
(39:27):
is the question, as you point out, and unless, unless
they get this bullpen organized, I think I'll say something
that we never would have thought maybe six weeks ago,
which is, if the Yankee bullpen doesn't meaningfully improve during
the course of the next six weeks, that probably you're
talking about the Houston Astros beginning October as the favorites
(39:49):
to win the American League. He's on Twitter at John Rossie,
that is, at John Rossie watch him during the broadcasting.
Are addressed like Burt Lancaster's character, But near the end
with everything there is I want you to pull your
microphone out of the bag when you do I want
to do? That would be nice. Here we go with
the trumpets. Now listen. I will leave it up to you, Jason.
(40:12):
I'll let you figure out. If the Mets are in
a certain position, you could probably begin our segment with
this with this song, however long you'd like. After all,
it is, after all your show. It's more than happy
to have watched. And hey, and don't forget on MLB
dot com. John MORROSSI eight hundred words on why Daniel
vogel Back is the n L m v P that's
(40:34):
coming up tomorrow as well, because I believe he came
up to the plate today to the song milk Shape
he did he did Women's Day in New York. Yeah,
caliber right now, m v P. Thanks so much, buddy,
we'll talk to you well. Thank you. Your by There
goes John Paul Rosy. Yeah, big deal today the Mets. Today,
(40:55):
Mets your celebrating women at the game. Today. They had
women baseball and softball players going out the first ball
and all the Mets players change their walk up music
to songs by by female artists, and Daniel vocal Back
picked Milkshake and the crowd goes crazy. Daniel Vogelback walking
up to the place the milkshake up going, Just start dancing,
(41:16):
Just dance like half a second, just like one move
where you stepping into the batter's box just a little bit.
Would you like to explain to folks why Daniel vogel
Back is getting the run? I don't know that. The
national audience just assumes I can't assume knowledge of Daniel
vote will vog Back. Oh no, people are Daniel vogel
Back is Uh, Come on, the guy's a cult hero. Now,
(41:37):
Daniel vogel Back, he goes, uh, he goes six ft
to seventy. Yeah, so there you go, Daniel Vogelback. That
and we could do another twenty minutes right now, and
all the legal problems facing Kellis and the milkshake song, uh,
we could well. Now all the songs that now you
bring Beyonce into. Every song is in trouble. Now. I
don't know what song I can listen to if Beyonce
(41:57):
had that album come out. And now there's all kinds
of I am I allowed to listen to this? I'm
got you gotta change some words, some wrap, some phrase,
all change some stuff up. If I listen to this song,
or someone coming to my house and saying you owe
me six dollars. I don't know if I can listen
to the album. I don't know. I was listening to
aqualong earlier. I think I might be done. I don't
think you cannot breath. I mean there's all sorts of
(42:18):
stuff going on that you can't do it. None of
those songs you listen to him forty three, I mean, really,
it's it just takes you down a deep dark path.
There's only one song you can really listen to that
has no controversy around it, and that's that's this one.
Don't don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't.
(42:39):
It would be better if this was an actual instrument,
but that's okay. Don't. This is a song that played
when vogel Box drank twelve milk shakes after the game
and in there looking like he's worn out, like he's
in the Schwarma place at the end of the Avengers
first wedding, like old Elvis first we beat the Reds.
(43:00):
Do we get shwarm up okay? Or or he could
be broke or
