(00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Greetings and welcome inside
final hour tonight to The Jason Smith Show with my
big friend Mike Harmon. Cruising along, you seem to have
perked up after you know, a long stretch since Uh, well,
I shouldn't even bring it up because then you'll get
(00:45):
all sad and angry again, screaming I just had ice cream.
I'm okay, it's not ice cream. Man, Timmy L. Trumpet
did nothing for uh And you know what, the Mets
really let him come back tomorrow. You know what, they
really let him down. He made an appointment to be
there to give you greatness and they didn't hold up
(01:07):
their side. I mean, really, if you're if you're over
the weekend going hey, maybe you come one to ground pitches.
Maybe you come on Wednesday. Maybe that maybe that might
be and uh or maybe maybe you come during the
Rocky series and not the Dodgers series. Maybe that's a
better time to show up. I don't know, maybe maybe
there is some of that. Certainly it's you know, also,
(01:29):
don't intentionally walk guys and then give up pits. I mean,
you know things like that. The Dodgers have nine that's
not even September yet, it's they've already won. Yeah, but
this is when you start to pucker though, don't you.
Uh well, it's a little bit just there a Consolin injury,
there is Kershaw coming back. Like I'm not trying to
put that and speak that into a type of brilliance
(01:53):
of a season that you've had. You're always looking around
one what what's waiting in the wings? It's not a
story for tonight. But there is a dark side for
the Dodgers, which we'll get you, but it's not it's
not a story for tonight. So we have we get
to sing dark side of the moon. Sure you can
on the dark side of the moon. The dark side
of the moon. Were around the dark side of the moon.
(02:15):
I'm gonna stab you at that dark of the moon.
So you think can tell between heaven and hell. We're
on the dark side of the moon. Don't encourage this.
All in all, it's just another brick in the wall.
It's another brick in the wall. It's another brick in
the wall. Did you watch that Weird trailer nine thousand
times with Harry Potter in it? No, I didn't see that.
(02:37):
That's like a group activity movie. I think, really, okay,
that looks like it could be a lot of fun.
We actually interviewed Weird. Al yah. So let me just
get to what is my still my favorite NFL story
of the day in the last two days has been
(02:59):
the forty nine. There's trying to sell to us that, yes,
they really came close to trading Jimmy Garoppolo at some point, right.
I told you last night the forty Niners never really
were going to trade him. They wanted just to make
it seem like they were going to trade him so
they could find a way to make it comfortable for
(03:20):
them to bring Garoppolo back and give the job to
tray Lance. They know they have to let tray Lance
try at some point. They're not sold on how good
he is, so they want Garoppolo waiting in the wings. Why,
Because this team is built to win now. They have
pretty good weapons on offense, their defense is pretty good.
They're not gonna let Tray Lance just suck and stumble
(03:40):
around for a while. When the Niners said today, hey,
we're gonna let Tray make his mistakes, that's like three
weeks of mistakes, not gonna make eight weeks of mistakes.
They'll go to Garoppolo because they want to win. Their
plan the entire time. And I told you this was
to find a way to keep Garoppolo around and make
it look like, oh, it's just a happy accident, when
(04:01):
this was the plan all along, right, And here's a
here's a big reason why. Kyle Shanahan today talked about
how surprised he wasn't how shocked he was that Garoppolo
still wound up with the forty Niners where he agreed
yesterday to come back for one more year. We were
always clear to Jimmy had him salary, cap wives and
stuff in a backup role um and supporting trade in
(04:23):
that and if that worked for him, that was a
no brainer for us. We just didn't think the chances
of that we're going to happen, and it ended up
being that way. So when it was all said and done,
even though it's pretty shocking to us, we thought it
was a win win for both eyes. Yeah, you know
why it didn't happen because the Niners didn't really try.
You know how I know this. How many stories did
(04:44):
we hear? How many reports of teams talking to the
forty Niners about Jimmy Garoppolo? Zero? We made up a
lot of zero. It was an it was you and
your revenge if they let him go, man going going
to the fort, going to the if they if they
actually waived him, letting him go to the six episode
(05:05):
series for Disney plus what we do We provide content
for people like I could, I could, I could head
onto she Hulk a little bit. Uh, but think about that.
Was he really on the market. We did not get
one story in the last seven months of any team
interested in Jimmy Garoppolo. Why the Niners have always had
(05:27):
the price for Jimmy Garoppolo really high. Hey, someone's gonna
be crazy enough to give us a first round picking
a third. Okay, we'll trade Garoppolo, but we're gonna keep
everybody away, and we're gonna make it seem like we
can't trade him. How was there not one story, not
one story, whether it was right before his shoulder surgery,
right after, during the summer, not one story of a
team talking to the forty Niners about Jimmy Garoppolo and
(05:50):
what it would take to get him hand last week,
whether or not, whether or not it was something that
was true or not or not true, whether or not
it was something that could happen. Hey, there was no Hey,
we're talking to such and such a team. At issue
is how much money we're going to pick up on him,
what the draft compensation is going to be. None, not
one team, not one report linked any team in the
(06:12):
NFL to Jimmy Garoppolo. And at some point if Jimmy
Jimmy Garoppolo is a sought after guy, I mean, I'm
not the biggest fan for him, but at the same time,
I get that he wins, and I understand the teams
like him. He's one with the forty Niners. He's a
guy that has a lot of value around the NFL,
more value than Baker Mayfield. And we watch Baker Mayfield
have conversations with teams and the Panthers make a trade
(06:34):
for him, and they figure out the compensation, all these things.
We figured that that happened. Baker Mayfield was not nearly
the quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is. Baker Mayfield got to go
someplace and Jimmy Garoppolo didn't, and there were no offers,
you know, wise and Noah, when a guy's really not
out there for trade, then there's not gonna be any offers.
So you tell me why Jimmy Garoppolo had nothing from
(06:56):
any team in the NFL. If he supposedly was out
there and the Niners really wanted to trade him, they didn't. Yeah,
I think part of it is when you start to
parse things through, right, Baker's what five years younger than
Jimmy G. So maybe there's a little bit there wondering
if with the injuries that Jimmy G has had, which
are pretty significant right leg plus shoulder, that bringing him
(07:21):
in likewise, if he's got any say in the matter
and they're trying to be fair to him. And that
was one of the talking points that Shanahan selling here
is that you know, those conversations with him had been
ongoing of hey, keep it, keep an open mind, keep
an open mind. What we're gonna do here? Uh baroppolo?
Going and learning another system and jumping in might not
(07:43):
be the ideal way to go. Now. It worked for
Baker Mayfield as he went and supplanted Sam Donald and
I'll let anybody want to make their crass comments and
take shots at Sam Donald have ad it on your
own time. But the the idea being that there might
have been the availability, but you had to overwhelm them
with an offer because they know what they have and
(08:06):
his importance to their squads. Certainly, Kyle Shanahan knows the
importance of Jimmy g to his win lost percentage, no
question about it. Going back to last week, there was
a question that was asked, you know the trade interest currently,
and Shanahan told her reporters, quote, I believe that goes
on with his agents, but none that I hear of, right,
(08:27):
so did John Lynch and everybody just keep him in
the dark. Coach, Yeah, you just worry about stuff over there,
and whoever shows up and puts on a uniform, coach
him up. Except for that guy. He gets to go
work out by himself and go hang out. And if
they if they really wanted to trade Garoppolo. They would
have actually talked about it because they would want to
push his value up. Hey, the calls are coming in,
(08:48):
but we're not. We want a little bit more for Jimmy. Hey,
reports are so and so offered a third and a
fourth round pick, and the Niners want a little bit more.
And then things sit for a while. Maybe they get
a little bit better offer, or they go back and say,
all right, certain fourth round pick for whatever it is.
They would do that because that would help them. Not
keeping Jimmy Garoppolo for Trey Lance does not work. This
(09:08):
does not help Trey Lance. Knowing the guy that just
went to the NFC Championship game is sitting behind me.
I know full well if I screw up that they're
gonna go to him. How does that help Tray Lance?
It doesn't know, But it also showst and to my
point that I've been making forever is it also shouldn't
cripple him in terms of how he's approaching the game,
because if it does, that's not the guy I want.
(09:30):
Is my starter? Right if he's worried about what's behind him.
And we talked about this a bit yesterday before this
next Shanahan Layer that gets a head and in was
go do your job, use Jimmy G's knowledge and whatever
you can get. He's not gonna sabotage you. No, no no, no,
that's that's the wrong read. Boops. You want to go
(09:51):
back to the other way, roll against your body. You
want to throw it to the guy with our color
jersey on it, not their color jersey, our culture. But
the point is he's not gonna sabotage things. They obviously
speak pretty highly of each other. How much of that
is play acting for the cameras versus actually two guys
that can get along, right, because you have that in
Pittsburgh Trabinsky and and Kenny Picky. But look, Brady didn't
(10:14):
want Jimy Garoppolo around. I want to, I want to,
but publicly he never endored. But still, but it doesn't
matter how Brady says I want even though Tom Brady's
most accomplished quarterback and the best quarterback we've seen, did
not want Jimmy Garoppolo on the team. So it happens
where I, hey, I'm not comfortable with this guy, and
I want But you're a guy that's established and they're
drafting a guy where people are starting to say, well,
(10:36):
the old man should be put as a pastor. In
this case, you're a guy that's proven nothing. You played
very players that you're you said you were nervous about
them wanting to be their quarterback. And here's here's Brady
who has accomplished everything. And I don't want Garoppolo around,
you know, Trey Lancey, look generation Z, he's a different
kind of dude that's coming up. It's a different kind
of he's only had one big year of of football. Okay,
(10:58):
what needs to be put you? What we need to
do to put you in the best metal place to
win a football game. See, I think Brady's is a
power play more than anything like. That was a fight
of my guy, your guys whatever. I think that's the
bigger part. That's not a damnit. He's coming from the
job with Tray lance The way it's being described and
put out there is that he's got to be nervous
that Jimmy's gonna take his job if he doesn't perform.
(11:20):
Then yeah, you're a contending team, You're not a rebuilding team,
and and you're not looking for a bridge quarterback. Right
for some of these other places where Jimmy g could
have gone. They're all most of them are are rebuilding
or their bridge guys is so much a right Marcus Mariota,
do you have any expectations for him whatsoever? Non? Zero
(11:45):
to where you're saying, unless they suddenly rattle off four
wins five wins to start. Tell me, Desmond Ritters not
a quarterbacks whereas Jimmy G. He complicates things. He's he's
a guy that's not quite a bridge. It's not quite
a guy you want forever. And if you're one of
these would be bottom feeding teams, like we talked about
(12:05):
with Seattle, you're not bringing them in. There's no point.
If they wanted him gone, he'd be gone, but they didn't,
so they keep him around. And here's the other part
of it. Why this was their plan all along. Nobody, nobody,
No team bends over backwards for their backup quarterback. And
all they've done for months is bend over backwards for
(12:28):
Jimmy Garoppolo. Jimmy, we still love you, we want you
to be a part of this team. Jimmy, We're gonna
do everything we can to trade you. Jimmy, do you
want to work out with us or away from us?
Work out away from us. Jimmy, do you want to
stay with us if we can't have a trade. Jimmy,
are you okay? We're talking to you right now. You
know the Trey Lance is going to be the guy,
Jimmy if we can't get a trade for you, Do
you want to stay here as a backup quarterback? Jimmy,
(12:49):
do you want to sign this deal right here that
could get you, uh six and a half million dollars guaranteed,
as much as sixteen million dollars guaranteed. Nobody, Nobody caters
to your back up quarterback like that unless you have
a plan for them to start, because at your backup quarterback.
There's been so much more about Jimmy than there's ever
been for tray Lance and how comfortable he is. It's Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy.
(13:12):
How's tray Oh, dude, trays fine, trays fine, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy,
Jimmy je This is when ye but outwardly we've gotten
a ton of tray Lance day to day. This is
when played really well. He looks, Hey, we're on the
top of the mountain again. Now we're back at the bottom.
This is why when you go out with your new girlfriend,
you don't talk about your ex girlfriend. That's what the
(13:35):
niners are doing. It's like, we're out with our new
girlfriend and all we're doing is talking about our old girlfriends. Oh,
this is a nice place to eat. Yeah, I came
here once with my ex. It didn't go well. Here's
what happened, all right, So that's a bad example. Uh,
you don't do that unless you still hung up on
your ex girlfriend and you want to get back together
with They're not doing this unless they want Garoppolo to stay,
(13:56):
and they want Garoppolo to start, and he's gonna start
sooner rather than right. But it's the best of all
worlds because if Trey Lance goes and blows everybody's doors off,
like some predict he will, I don't think that, But
say he does, then if there's an injury, guess what, Hey, Jimmy,
how'd you like to go and get traded to insert
city X? But But this does This doesn't take anything
(14:19):
away from the fact that they never really tried to
trade him, and they tried to keep them a wrong
because they don't know. I don't think they did any
big cell job. I think you're gonna have to overwhelm
them if you wanted him, because the entire time it
was all right, we don't know if this is gonna work,
So if we can keep Jimmy around, we'd like to
keep Jimmy. It's like it's like Billy b when he
fires Grady and uh in Moneyball. You go into these
(14:42):
kids houses and you think you know what there and
you don't. You don't, and then he fires him and
gives the kid playing video games. You're the new lead scout. Okay,
great Twitter and out about a fresca. Mike gets swollen.
Dumpt it just so you know, don't fall victim to
thet is going, what a happy accent this is? This
was the plan all along. Dealing with a dead battery,
(15:03):
head to Auto's Own, America's number one battery destination. They
offer free battery services like free battery testing and free
battery charging. Their free battery testing can help you know

at just and they're the only place you can find
proven tough during last batteries. Next time you having battery trouble,
(15:24):
head to auto zone your battery solution in America's number
one battery destination. Well coming up next. It was this
time last night I thought one big time NBA trade
was not going to be made. Now twenty four hours later,
after what happened today, I'm positive it will. It's next
right here, Jason and Mike Fox. Be sure to catch
(15:46):
live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike harmon
weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app the It's
not often that I can change perspective. I always say.
One of my favorite things President Obama used to say was,
(16:06):
my opinion is of this situation is evolving. So like,
that's just a genius thing to say. So I thought
one thing. Now, I think my opinions evolving, And like
with all things, people told me I should have a
different opinion. You know, now I can say that it
was evolving and my opinions evolving. I would like to
I use that all that. I love that my opinions evolving. Uh.
(16:27):
And but you also can't ignore when things happen. You know,
you can have opinion of something, but you can't ignore
the facts. And you can't ignore when something happens because
it changes things doesn't happen, right, Like I could say, hey,
team X sucks. But if you're saying, at the end
of August, there in first place by fifteen games, guess
what team X doesn't suck? No, well, I mean it
(16:47):
depends on your definition of sun. Okay, if you say
team X sucks and at the end of so that's it.
I don't know. I don't know. I don't know if
that's good. I don't know if that's so. Here as
as we go, so as we go, you're looking at
(17:10):
your you could still say I hate this team. So
I can still say, hey they suck, versus hey they're losing. Yeah,
but all right, but all and how real are you
with it? But no, they suck. But with stop but
with opinions of of certain things. As facts happen, things evolved.
Last night at this time, we talked about the Knicks
(17:31):
signing R. J. Barrett. They gave him a four year
shove at Frostburg. That also sounds like a sound bite.
That's four years, four year, hundred twenty million dollar extension,
and it was going to stop them from getting Donovan
Mitchell because Leon Rose, who runs the Knicks, put an
arbitrary Monday night midnight deadline on we're either going to
(17:55):
trade for Donovan Mitchell or we're extending r J. Barrett,
And which is kind weird to say, one, we have
a deadline too. We can either trade this guy to
you or give him twenty million dollars because the last
few days the Utah Jazz have gone from we don't
know how much we want r J. Barrett to r J.
Barrett is essential to any package now for Donovan Mitchell.
(18:17):
And last night at this time it was man, they're
signing r J. Barrett. They're giving them all that money.
The Mitchell trade is dead because if they were to
trade Donovan Mitchell Awade, Utah would have to assume another
twenty six million dollars a year in salary because of
a poison pill that's in the contract that r J.
Barrett's getting. I don't want to get too into detail
(18:38):
on it, but the Jazz would have to absorb a
lot more money, right, let's just say that. Then today
happened and I came into work saying, no, this trade
is gonna happen now, and then Nicks are gonna get
Donovan Mitchell and r J. Barrett is gonna go to
the Jazz and it's gonna be r J. Barrett and
a couple of picks and a player or two, and
everybody's gonna be happy. Why what happened today? Nothing? Nothing
(19:03):
happened today. Last night, the New York Knicks extended their
first round draft pick, the first guy they've extended since
Charlie Ward first round pick. They extended them for four
more years. Nobody gets a second contract, which tells you
why the Knicks has been bad for the last twenty years.
Nobody gets it. This is a celebratory day for the Knicks.
It's a late night news dump. Okay, well, today we'll
(19:26):
be a big victory lab for the Knicks because they're
gonna own the back page. Here's r J. Barrett getting
a lot of money, and we're gonna hear from r
J Barrett. We're gonna hear from the Knicks. Everybody's happy.
Nothing from r J Barrett. R J. Barrett retweeted the
Bleacher Report story that Nicks siding words on it. That's it.
No RJ. Barrett, blessed to be a Nick, happy to
(19:47):
be in New York. No press conference with r J. Barrett. Hey,
I just got a twenty million dollars. No press conference
from the Knicks, from Leon Rose, from anybody. Leon Ros
doesn't talked to the press lot, but from anybody saying, Hey,
this is our day, this is our day. We we
we we believe in r J. Barrett. He is our
new superstar and we're excited to build the next four
years plus with him. Twenty two years old. He's done
(20:08):
only things that only a handful of players have done
at this point in their career. Nothing. Nothing celebratory about
the Knicks making this kind of signing. When does that
ever happen? Never? Never, any time a team signed somebody
to a big contract like this, there's some kind of celebration.
There's some kind of hey, attention seeking news cycle owning,
(20:29):
because that's what the Knicks want to do. Hey, you
you fight for relevancy in New York. You know what, Hey,
we sawn r J. Barrett. Big deal today. Nothing silence
from everybody. Silence. So if they're gonna keep r J.
Barrett and they're not going to trade him, would today
have gone the way this was, no, we would have
gotten something really big, really celebratory. We would have heard
(20:51):
from the Knicks or r J. Barrett, and we did not.
So this tells me this trade is still gonna happen.
And Champs Trantio, who did last night say the two?
So I just still going to talk about getting Donovan Mitchell. Okay,
this tells me, Yeah, they're still gonna go through it.
Now the other part of this, you talk taking the
extra money with r J. Barrett. All right, now, think
(21:13):
about this for a second. Do you want to take
on extra money and salary? No, nobody does. But every
team's got to spend the salary cap. And who are
the Jazz gonna pay? Right, they just traded Rudy Gobert.
You got a bunch of picks for him and everything else.
They are starting over. They want a bunch of picks
and young players because they are starting they don't want
to have to pay anybody. But you have to pay
somebody because you've got to get to the floor, and
(21:35):
paying r J. Barrett for the next four years will
help you get to the floor. Look every offseason with
the Knicks for the last ten years, what did I
watch them say, we have sixty million dollars this year
to spend in free agency, and what happens? They can't
sign anybody because nobody wants to come. So what do
they do instead? Hey, TODJ. Gibson's just getting three years
and thirty six million dollars because you've got to give
(21:57):
it to somebody, because you have to spend the money.
So the Knicks end up giving it to guys mid
level deals that they can get out of in a
year or two. But you've got to spend the money
where else the Jazz gonna spend this. Been're not gonna
bring anybody a lot of salary. You gotta have something.
So now this makes sense that when this happened, there
was no the trade is over. There was no uh,
this is now not happening. Donovan Mitchell is going to stay,
(22:19):
We're gonna talk to other two. There was no Danny
Ainge being upset, There was no Knicks being upset about it.
They're still talking. They were talking, they couldn't come to
an agreement, so they pull this off. The fact there
was nothing today about it, not a single thing from
the Knicks or R. J. Barrett tells me, Yeah, r J, congratulations,
you got your money, but you're gonna have to wait
to celebrate because maybe it's as a Nick or maybe
(22:41):
it's gonna be as member of the the Utah Jazz. So yeah,
this tells me I'm doing a one e D on
this last night. At this time I thought no way.
But the fact that nothing happened today, Yeah, that tells
me this trade is gonna happen, and Mitchell's gonna be
in Nick eventually before the season starts. Still, but some
potential to go through, still, some hoops to to jump through,
and and game has been shipped to a maybe roping
in a third or fourth team because you still need
(23:02):
to move some moneys around as it we're talking about
Evan Fournier. You talk about the poison pill. The way
the NBA does trades really just asinine in many ways.
The money's having to match up within a certain percentage.
Here's your salary cap within a certain percentage. Here's this
poison pill, here's this go jump on, you know, one
(23:25):
foot and Patcher's stomach up of your head while you
signed this. A couple of things that may be true,
and you know we've we've talked it out and the
Knicks of late not really big on the press conference
right in local media because for Jalen Bruntson it was
all just behind closed doors. They didn't have local media there.
(23:47):
It was a party for squad. Maybe they've got to
wait and organize and get everything in place to do
that officially. Number two, he may not have signed the
deal yet, right, it may be agreed to in principle
to where you don't have a finalization. Yeah, but r
R J. Barrett saying more than he is on social media. Congratulations,
ro I'm talking about the Knicks are talking about it.
(24:10):
Nothing but in terms of where there's still some some
eyes to dot and teased across in this literally and
figuratively to make the deal official with R. J. Barrett
and then the next generation. As Shams had alluded to
that this could go deep into the preseason. And we
(24:34):
still have more than a month before everybody reports, so
maybe everybody's on vacation. Oh no, I know this will
still go into the into the into the next month
and into the preseason before because it's gonna be a
very complicated deal. The Knicks are gonna want uh Mitchell
in and and and and and get their new rotation
together because they're gonna lose a couple of guys off
the rotation. But it's so yeah, but nobody's coming in
(24:55):
for a little while, So we have a little bit
of time, right, which means there's no rush, much like
that midnight deadline to announce celebrate, have a mover Zela
or Timmy Trump. You know what's going on with training
r J Barrett. We're training r J Barrett and we're
getting Mitchell back. I mean, Obi Tappa was supposed to
get dealt. They let him throw out the first pitch
(25:17):
at the Mets game. Hey, Nick's night. Here's the thing,
but you need to wear a jazz hat. Would you
throw out the first pitch? Alright? Because something he throws
the first pitch and someone runs out, it's like, oh,
look at that. He's gonna have mottographs like, no, he
just pulled out a jazz head. What the hell just happened? Uh? Yeah?
Could it take a little bit? Yeah, And obviously it
is because the Nicks hit this deadline of right now,
(25:38):
we're gonna pay r J. Barrett now everybody. Now everything
seems a little bit easier. And are the Knicks happy?
Keeping arch about. I'm sure they would be. They would
have done this if it was well, if we don't
have the guy. We don't have the guy because he's
a six six wing that can score. I wish you
could shoot a little bit better. But he plays great defense.
He fits in. Tom Timodeau does please. You would trade
Westbrook for him in a second. So the latest report
(26:02):
is that you're gonna get Cam Reddish going to the Lakers.
You're gonna get camera. You're gonna get Cam Reddish and
a free concert from James Dolan. I just got a Radish.
It's gonna be a plane rais alright, right, alright, alright, Frostbroog,
here we go. Ready, here, I'm gonna give you. I'm
gonna give you a question right now. The Lakers can
get rid of Russell Westbrook's contract. Okay, they don't get
(26:25):
anything for him, but they get out of his contract
and he's gone. As long as James Dolan lives with
you for a month, can he live with me while
he's on pour. He's living with you for not doing anything.
He's just living with you and your family for a month.
You have to be coomed, roady, You gotta you gotta
(26:45):
run Audio j D and the Straight Jute and straight Shots.
You get rid of Westbrook's contract, but he lives because
that guy is so cheap. My lights will be offen
like eight pm. You don't think, Hey, how about we
order some pizza? How about No, I don't got any money.
How about you pay for I own cable vision and
Madison Square Garden and the Rangers and the Knicks. Hey,
how about we order some cheesecake factory? Oh yeah, I'll
(27:08):
be back and I'm gonna go for a walk. I'll
be right back. Twitter it out about a Fresco Mike
get swollen down show and my best friend, my car,
and now here's some tasty licks. Do you never get
You never gave an answer. You can get rid of
Westbrook's he lives with you for a month. The answer
is yes, then no, all right, you can get rid
(27:32):
of Westbrooks contract, but Steve to Sager lives with you
for a month. Yes, wow, okay, then if that'll get
rid of Westbrooks, Steve bringing it bring it on now,
telling us what's trending besides him moving into Frostberg's house.
It is special delivery, Steve to Sacre. But when you
say that Dolan, Hey, let's have a pizza. He would say,
you know, I think I can make a pizza out
(27:53):
of these English muffins here. How about that, You got
any shredded cheese, I'll just sell the right on here.
You know what some che Technically you got a pizza. Well,
everything's final in Major League Baseball is the Padres held
on to win the late game at San Francisco for three.
(28:13):
Giants have lost six in a row. Padres in the
final NL wild card spot two and a half games
over Milwaukee. Milwaukee lost at home to Pittsburgh for to two.
Pirates got a run in the seventh, one in the
eight one on the top of the ninth, Cardinals lost those.
Cincinnati beat St. Louis five to one. Cardinals are first
in the NL Central six games over the Brewery. Still,
(28:34):
Cards offense went four for thirty. Aaron Judge with his
fifty first homer of the year, a three run shot.
He had three hits in Anaheim tonight. He's up to
a hundred thirteen RBIs this season. Yankees ended a three
game losing streak beating the angel seven to four. Anthony
Rizzo his thirtieth home run, Arizona won its fifth straight game,
beating Philadelphia and Aaron Nola twelve to three. Diamondbacks today
(28:56):
picked up next year's contract option on manager Tory Lavello.
Houston with a win four to at Texas from Berveldez
great again. He's fourteen and four, eight innings, eight strikeouts.
Houston pitcher Justin Verlander goes on the fifteen day injured
list with a bad calf. Wins for Kansas City for
Minnesota their fifth in a row. Are you really turning pages, Steve?
(29:19):
Are you like, are you like back to the future
to know that one was a cough in front of me? Here?
I feel like you've been turning pages tonight, going you know,
I was going to the Dodger game next, and you
interrupt just literally that was the next game and the
Dodgers beat the next tonight by the final of four three.
Is no trumpets tonight? Is what you should say? Four three.
(29:44):
L A Pete Alonso went over four three strikeouts. Jacob
de Graham on the mound Tomorrow night against l A.
Tyler Anderson will go for the Dodgers. Colorado beat Atlanta
and Max Freed three to two. We are brought to

Victories for Seattle, Toronto and Tampa Bay raised All Star
pitcher Shane McClanahan was a late scratch with a shoulder injury.
It was cut down day in the NFL. Now to
the fifty three man roster. The Raiders wave last year's
first round tackle Alex Leatherwood. Baltimore signed x rator running
back Kenyan Drake. The Houston Texans released running back Marlon Mack.
(30:30):
Minnesota cut quarterback Shawn Mannion, Arizona cut quarterback Trace McSorley.
They could end up on their team's practice squads. Those
practice squads signings officially start tomorrow. Phoenix Williams lost her
first round match at the US Open today. Serena has
a second rounder tomorrow night. Naomi Osaka lost in the
first round late tonight. Defending champion at the US Open,
Emi Radakanu lost in the first round. Back to you
(30:53):
and t J. It was definitely a Las Vegas chainsaw
massacre for Leatherwood get released by the Raiders. I saw today.
Now the Raiders have no first round picks left in
the last three drafts, not but last year, the year before,
they have nobody left. And they didn't overpay Gruten No,
(31:14):
not at all, not at all, not at all. Not.
He goes to church. He's a good guy. He's a
good guy, right to church. I go to church. I'm
a good guy, Thank you very much. They also traded
a former second rounder today. It's just they'll trade Derek
car tomorrow. Flatherwood was so bad at tackle they literally
(31:35):
had to move him away from tackle. How do we
start him without starting him at the position we drafted
him at? He was horrid. Hey, can you listen, he's
too close to the quarterback. Can we move him out
further away from the quarterback, make him a wide receiver.
That's not gonna work. Let's just cut him. It got
to be like that kid that you don't want to
play outfield on your grade school baseball team, and you
(31:56):
try and just shove him in right field because nobody
hits the right field at that age. And then someone
hits it to right field and you really, oh, this
is not gonna work. Can you play on the line
in right field? No? That's and then when the left
he goes up and you go, hey, time out, time out,
time out, Jimmy, go to right, you go to left,
to go to and then when the right hand then
you sweat right. Got it? Okay? So who's who's picking
(32:18):
up Alex Leatherwood to start on their NFL stop? No Seahawks, Jets.
I mean there's a lot of suspect offense there would
be active, desperate, but to be a backup to come
in and learn. What teams are gonna do is they're
(32:39):
gonna go back to why he got a first round
grade and they're gonna say that's the player we want
to go, and we're gonna bring him along and set
they all think every team thinks I know how to be.
We're gonna go back to what he was in the
draft and we're gonna come out, we're gonna fix him
and maybe he can be good because we got a
first round talent. That's basically a free guy for us
because he's our final alignment. So yeah, no, someone will
pick him up. I hope it's not the Jets, but
someone will pick him up? Will happen after three more
(33:02):
Tom Brady injuries on the line, Maybe that'll be you
got Leatherwood protecting Brady's blindside? Good look, all right, thank you,
Steve leather helmet weather heads with George Queeney, John crist
I got some ideas for plays. Are like your plays,

on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcast or wherever
you get your podcast, Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith
Show with my best friend Mike Harmon, looking forward to
the turn of baseball tomorrow night. No games tonight. Yeah,
it was a tough off day back tomorrow. The entire
league was off. Now, uh yeah, where are your trumpets now? Smith?
(34:29):
I'm we'll get timmy trumpet tomorrow night. It's de Grom day.
Good luck? Where your trumpets at now? Good luck? Camlical.
I can see, I can see what's gonna happen. De
Gram will be great and he'll get into the seventh
inning and the Mets won't score anything off of Anderson
will be nothing. Nothing. The Mets bullpen will come out
and give up a run and they'll lose one. Nothing
(34:51):
that's gonna happen tomorrow. Watch watch because I know the Mets.
But justin figure out what the odds are to lay
down on that, we should probably just do the odds, Mike.
Probably we aren't great because the Dodgers always scored more
than one one. Yeah, but we have to read that
out in the past. But it's he's just a guy, Okay,
(35:11):
not the man, Now you sound drunk. Now, you're just
a boy. If he was so good, the Mets would
hit for him. No, no, that's generally what happens for
an ace. Uh right, the offense just says, yeah, we're
good today. Were how do you take batting practice. I'm
feeling I'm feeling fine. I'm a little blow that. I
had something to eat right before the game, had a
(35:31):
lot of soda and pasta, a lot of cars. So yeah,
it's gonna be fine. Last night, my dad went to
the Angels game watch Aaron Judge hit home run number fifty.
Did you ever hear from him or anything? No? No, no,
but that's my dad. I'll see a little disappointing. I'll
see him to day. Oh no, he thanked me for
the tickets. I haven't seen him since, but I mean
(35:53):
since the game. Yeah, no, I haven't seen more than hours. Uh.
He did go to a loss. Nobody he's holding that
against me. My son knew they were gonna lose. That's
why I sent of the games night. So he went
to go see Aaron Judge at number fifty last night
tonight the Yankees one. He didn't go to the game.
Had he gone, he could have seen this hit well
(36:16):
till right Aaron Judge has done it again. Number fifty
one for Judge. He's ten away from Roger Marris. It's
a three run shot and the Yankees have opened it up.
It's seven to two. Yankees Radio Network on the call,
the Yankees winning the game. Fifty one for Aaron Judge,
(36:37):
who now will enter September needing ten home runs to
tie eleven to pass Roger Morris. A couple of things.
One he's gonna break. He's gonna break that mark. He's
gonna hit more than sixty one home runs. He's hot.
He hits when in his hot months, he hits at
least ten home runs in a month. So I'm saying, yeah,
(36:58):
he's gonna get there. The rusher, the fund that's gonna
be there for him. He's done it all year. This
is something he would become a Yankee immortal. He had
his slump a couple of weeks ago. He's getting hot again.
Aaron Judge is gonna break this mark. But more importantly,
when he does it, as we get closer to it,
watch how this gets positioned. He's gonna wind up after
(37:19):
this is over being the People's home run Champion. He
hits more than sixty one, he will be the People's
home run Champ and we'll be back with home runs
like we were when it was McGuire and Sosa and
Barry Bonds. Because the p E d s and the
p D era really kind of hurt us on home runs.
We all still like home runs because it means runs
for our team and it's exciting. That's the most exciting
(37:41):
play in baseball is home runs. But for the overall
historical significance, yeah, it kind of tarnished it a little bit.
He gets past sixty one, he will be viewed as
the people's home run champion. Right he beat Maris. You
know McGuire and Sosa we saw them after go in
front of Congress with him and the Mitchell report. We
know bar Bonds and Balco and p E d s.
(38:02):
So yeah, Aaron Judges the People's home run Champion, and
that's how he's going to be. Look because baseball is
still gonna recognize who they recognize. Is gonna recognize Bonds,
but Aaron Judge will be the People's home run Champion. Trugge.
And as this gets closer and we start counting it down,
in September. That's what everybody's gonna focus on. Aaron Judge
can break Roger Marris's record, Well, Roger Marris doesn't have
(38:23):
the record, doesn't matter. In my mind, he's got the record.
I think of him as the record holder. He could
break Roger Marris's record. Watch it'll happen obliquely, that will
happen over the top. That's how it's gonna go. Well,
what's great is it's gonna be all the guys that
look the other way while it was happening. Who are
now the guys that put on foam fingers so you
can see that they're really doing their finger wagging about
(38:46):
the steroid era and how terrible and tainted and dirty
it all was. You guys all made millions of dollars
on this thing too, and look the other way. But
now it's the worst scourge that the sport has ever had.
But now you look at, as JP pointed out, John
palm Rossion with US American League record at a minimum, right,
(39:07):
you could say that with no caveats, no no discussions,
and to some degree generational to some you know, the
that twenty year period or what however you want to
define it is all with an asterisk. Even if they
never put it in a score book, even if they
never put it on the records. Those guys don't have
(39:29):
plaques in Cooperstown because of it. So that rolls through
And for Aaron Judge, likable guy, you call him the
people's champion in this regard. That means you can do
some promos with the Rock and everybody's happy. Yea, and
the Rock will do the commercials with it. Me and
Earra Judge shure, can you surmell whatever? No, no, no, no,
(39:49):
it's all wrapped up in a big ad for black Adam. Oh.
That's because now he's gonna sell the hell out of
that word. Can the People's Champion get you to that phrase?
Aaron Judge, the People's Champion. Our best of podcast goes
