Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio. Grattings.
Welcome in Fox Sports Radio. Jason Spitzheow with Mike Carmena
jacked up to be with you here on a beautiful
Thursday night, sitting in loads and loads of traffic here
in southern California. That's how you know. We've turned the
(00:44):
clocks back and chaos is ensued as dark as hits
the roads. But that's okay because we made it here
on time for a beautiful Thursday night football game that's
racing along as we broadcast live from the tire Act
dot Com studios tire act dot Com. We'll help you
get there an unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free road
hazard protection, and over ten thousand recommended installers tire act
(01:08):
dot com the way tire buying should be. Jason Smith
off tonight. You heard all about his procedure to go
down this morning. I can report at least as at
first blush. Uh, he's fine. He was texting us about
his need for Hamburgers very early this morning. So you
heard all the tales and now we'll actually talk, you know, sports.
(01:30):
As Dan Buyer comes in his stead tonight at Dan
Buyer on Fox where you find what's going on? Dan Man?
What to night is? He said, this game between the
Packers of Titans moving along, um moving very fluid, which
I'm sure that's how Jason, Yes, yes, Uh, all of
that running through your system. See how quickly you can
start jamming burgers, fries, et cetera. Back in left in
(01:55):
the third quarter four nine Packers had a drive stalled.
The one thing they did have as a couple of
defenders for the Titans get hurt on that drive. Will
keep an eye out for their availability going forward. But
a couple of missed opportunities to Alan Lazard, who has
become well the the one man band on a bit
of the last drive here for the Packers. But you
(02:17):
go back to the second quarter, Dan twelve minutes fifty
five seconds of possession for Tennessee. So if you came
in the landboat thinking you're gonna see a lot of
Aaron Rodgers, now he was standing there with his hands
in the muff, trying to stay warm. That's the thing
with you know, in in watching Tennessee, and even in
this first half, Mike Derrick Henry is taking some carries
(02:39):
and maybe getting a yard, maybe getting no yards. He
got stopped on a fourth down on on that long drive.
But now the question is, as you're sitting there mid
third quarter, entering the fourth quarter, how much does Green
Bay now want to tackle Derek Ken start making your
business decisions? Uh. Little bit of help for them is
(03:01):
that they did have a thirteen play fifty one yard
drive that took off six six minutes thirty five seconds.
So a little bit of a long protracted drive plus
the getting warm underneath the stadium in the bottles of
the stadium as you hit the locker room. So maybe
that will help things. But yeah, to your point, come
carry twenty five. Generally it's the all right, do I
really want to see this again? This is? Uh? You
(03:24):
want to see it? Mike because this is a game
where the uniforms are popping green Bay with their all whites.
I sed outlook as I saw a tweet and then
it contrasts perfectly with the Titans wearing their full Navy
garb tonight, so you know I'm a fan. There you go.
We got tray Lion Bircher leading receiver six for sixty
four Tennessee. Uh Dontrell Hilliard with the receiving touchdown from
(03:47):
Ryan Tannehill early on, Henry does have a touchdown eighteen
carries fifty one yards as they begin this drive deep
in their own territory for the Packers Rogers twelve of
eighteen a hundred four yards and to score that touchdown,
Christian Watson suddenly off the waiver wire to be everybody's
superhero as we roll forward, and and that that touchdown
(04:10):
was was crazy because Green Bay was winding down at
the end of the first quarter and green Bay ran
a running play and you just assumed, hey, they're gonna
go and take it. It's gonna be a third down call.
They'll use the quarter to discuss their play. Tennessee tried
to sub for some reason. Uh as green Bay all
(04:31):
of uson ran to the lot of scrimmage, and so
Rogers ran to play and ended up freelancing and then
threw one up with Watson one on one coverage. You
also drew a penalty on the play. So it was
actually a really really crafty play by Rogers, But that
touchdown not there um because of Great Green Bay dominance
by any means. They kind of just caught the Titans
with their pants down and were able to succeed. Yeah.
(04:52):
But anytime you're able to get the word crafty in
as you get rolling, worrow your pants down or any
of those things. Yeah, again, it's you. We're obsessing with
his age and his Hell's check ups, and as we
roll through, there's no question about it. Uh. And as
we we talk now, we're watching the fluidity the speed
(05:15):
of Derrick Henry just running a muck uh. And once
he gets to that second level, like nobody wants to engage,
it's like he's got a six point force field around him. Stars.
It is you are so spot on with that, because
it's one thing to be able to tackle Derrick Henry
when you're two ninety pounds playing along the interior of
(05:36):
the defensive line and he only has like a six
yard running start. It's completely different when he's sprinting for
the last twenty yards and you're a what two hunder
pound defensive back hanging out there to sweep the legs
kind of moment. I hope, I hope you can just
slow him up enough that somebody else can jump on
(05:56):
his back. Going back to a little Jurassic Park on
at it's the second or third raptor in has to
help with the tyrannosaurs Rex and we got problems. My
high school football career, Mike, uh didn't include a single victory.
Okay didn't. We didn't win a game, but one of
my lasting images was they ran a trap play with
a fullback and I'm playing in the back. I'm playing
(06:19):
in the secondary, Mike, and it was like a mack
truck was running at me. You know what I did.
I let him run me over, but I just tried
to grab onto his waist, like I I got lit up.
But because of the impact that I just held on
for dear life, I at least was able to bring
him down after like a twenty yard game. But I
still remember him barreling down on me. That that image
(06:41):
is stayed with you forever. We can now put that
into like a kid's book or something like that. Just
a ridiculous play. Just now, as the Titans after a
long completion we talked about Derrick Henry rumbuck. Well, now
they get a from the six yard line scenario. I
hand off to Derrick Henry and he doesn't jump past
(07:03):
to Austin Hooper who's standing by himself in the back
of the end zone. Touchdown Titans. I'm sure we'll hear
the call a little bit later as we go five
seventeen remaining extra point from Lambeau is missed. No, it doinked. Yeah,
he missed it. He jinked it off the the right upright.
He was in the news because his lawsuit against the
(07:25):
Jaguars got dismissed back for this game, and now he
because it's Lambeau at Lambeau again, here you go, and
well that extra point. Keep an eye on that as
we flow forward. Of course, Green Bay a three point favorite,
uh coming into this one. But what a drive and
what a play Derrick Henry. He does it all for
(07:45):
your fantasy team. He gave you the rushing touchdown. Can
he do a McCaffrey now, can he do a receiving
one all right too? For forty five at forty two
yards scamper we just saw and they cap it off
with a touch out. But we're talking about the Titans
six and three, three and two. Who to thunk it?
As you watch this roster start to roll, you you
(08:07):
respect Derrick Henry and what he's been all about. They
had opening season losses to the Giants at Buffalo, and
we look at those, Wow, really legit right at the
time with the Giants and the expectations and the craziness
of that game. Twenty the loss and then you lose
and get absolutely throttled on the road at Buffalo. Will
(08:28):
get into Buffalo and their game for this week coming
up here as we get rolling here on Fox Sports Radio.
But then you go and you you rattle off five
straight wins before and overtime lost to Kansas City, come
back and beat beat a. Look he plays on the
schedule the Denver Broncos, Tannehill back under center, and now
on the short week on the road at Green Bay.
(08:51):
Now you have a twenty nine lead the team that
you might have been looking to to bury and and
in that division, obviously nobody was running and hiding. Everybody
wanted the early season love of Christian Kirk and here
comes Doug Peterson and the Jaguars will know the Texans
are the Texans, and the Colts are good enough to
(09:13):
just be frustrating, obviously, the chaos of hiring Jeff Saturday
and he goes out and beats the Raiders, ending a
three game losing streak. But they've got four wins and
a tie coming into this week's game against Philadelphia, so
still in the mix. But for Tennessee, a team that
isn't exciting, right, They're not thrilling except when you watch
(09:34):
Derrick Henry run and plays like that which are just fantastic.
But from Mike Vrabel when he was owing to there
are a lot of people going, well, well is this
and then all of a sudden he just goes on
a roll and they get back at it. Tannehill Malik
will is that debate And now all of a sudden
you look towards the back end of this schedule, Dan
opportunity certainly knocks for them. As we look at strength
(09:57):
of schedule for the back end of the season, twenty
second strongest four games against plus five hundred teams and
then four games. I mean they still have two games
against the Jaguars. Yeah, yeah, no, it does. It sets
up nicely. They've got you know, this game will give
them a nice little rest of mini buy if you will.
But then you've got Cincinnati and you've got Philadelphia and
(10:19):
after that, by the way, I think both of those
games are they're winnable. Ten. Yeah. If Tennessee beat Cincinnati,
I would not be surprised. If they go to Philadelphia
and Derrick Henry runs over the Eagles, I wouldn't be
shocked either. So it's it's there for them. And you
mentioned that Giants game, like, not only are the Giants
(10:41):
a better team than we thought at the time, I
don't know how good they are still I still not
a full believer in them, But how that game played out.
Remember the Giants scored late, went for two, they had
Randy Bullock had an opportunity to still win it for
the Titans, and it doesn't happen. And you just wonder,
and you you look back at the schedule, and you
look back at what maybe the Titans were a team
(11:01):
last year that kind of back doored their way to
the a f C Number one seed and you just
lay out that schedule and all of a sudden you
start to look at yeah, okay, yeah, you got two
games against the Jaguars. You should win home against the Texans. Absolutely. Um,
just just the way that they hung with Kansas City
with Malik Willis at quarterback. I mean, this is it's
a run first team offensively, but I think that defense
(11:23):
is is like there is their strength right now. And
if they can get everybody healthy, getting Jeffrey Simmons back
tonight but no Bud dupree, if they end up getting healthy,
yeah they're gonna mean they're gonna be a nightmare for
whoever matches up with them in the playoffs. Well, and
that was one of the things. Look, I picked the
Packers to win this game. Obviously, that's not going my way.
Not that I was expecting some juggernaut, but win a
tight game at home on a short week history, UH
(11:47):
would say Aaron Rodgers brings it, and he had opportunities
on that last drive before the field goal attempt uh
to make some hey miss Lazard on a play where
he threw it behind him over the middle that would
have kept things moving. But the fact of the matter,
they later converted the first down, but it was one
where he had plenty of field and green to maybe
make a move and get them deep in the territory um.
(12:08):
But you know, to your to your point, you know,
you you look at the defense coming into tonight, and
what do we hear all about a lot of the injuries?
Next man up step in. You know, we see Philadelphia
signing guys left and right. I don't know that they're
getting any of that kind of action of who else
might still be on the street ready to get back in.
But but certainly you know they get healthy down the
(12:29):
stretch and Tannehill can stay healthy. You know you've got
Burke's back, who's a big game change for them, a
guy they were expecting to be a big part of
their offense. How much that translates over time, I don't know,
But you are looking at a nineties six targets, six
receptions for sixty yards with a long of forty three.
Given them a different element to their offense, which means
(12:53):
more respect in the passing game and even more cornerbacks
that are gonna have to decide how brave they are
against Derrick Henry. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten
pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific. And as we break down
this game, something talking with Alex and and our guy
(13:14):
Justin prospered behind the scenes here, executive producer, a little
bit of a the body language right that we've always
done and certainly Aaron Rodgers one of those guys we've
done it with a lot, and coming out of this game,
didn't seem like he really gave a damn in many
and many situations in the game over firing, firing the
(13:35):
ball thirty yards down field, over receiver. Normally he'd be
the history onics of Hey he was held and where
he just kind of shrugged, smiled talking to a lot
of his uh, the guys along the line is there
were injuries, many injuries for the Titans as the night
wore on on the defensive line. But you know, just
kind of standing around and talk, it's like, you know,
(13:56):
you could huddle your guys up, uh and start getting
ready for the next situation. Here he absorbed what was
a miserable sack, good coverage sack, plenty of time looking
down fields, didn't really move off the spot, and eventually
gets taken down for a huge loss, and again no
(14:17):
firing the ball to the ground, screaming at his receivers,
just kind of seemed resigned to it all, or that
he may have just kind of shrugged him then that
this this is what my season has been. Sunday was great,
but that's it. He looked like a guy who was
excited because it was the four day week Uh, you know,
(14:40):
four day weekend. That that's what that's what it. Remember,
green Bay hasn't had their by yet, right, so they've
got to buy coming up in a couple of weeks.
But now four maybe he gets a week and a
half off. And I think that he was probably loving it.
He's probably loving it to get away. I do think
that in a way, he's probably at his wits end.
(15:02):
It's just a matter of how much responsibility does he
bear and how much responsibility does he think he bears?
And I think those are the questions that coming out
of this game, you know, the conversation. The story probably
should be the Titans and what Derrick Henry did, but
it doesn't work like that, and it's Green Bay is
(15:23):
now four and seven and Aaron Rodgers, a pedestrian night
and Christian Watson as the touchdowns, but it wasn't like
there was a there was a lot outside of that
again just you know, seemingly off the mark. And yeah,
at the end of it all, where you've got these
players putting up big numbers for Tennessee and Green Bay
having their problems, you know, for Aaron Rodgers to just
kind of be you know, resigned to the fact, that's
(15:45):
what it looked like. I mean, like I we spoke
about it last segment, talking about the lack of urgency
and and that being a pet peeve of mine in general.
But certainly as this game wound to its miserable conclusion,
watching some of those plays, it reads a much larger
(16:06):
conversation about where he's at in this process. Again normally
angry uh and the side eye and everything else in here.
All right, next up, All right, let's go. Now, they
got a date at Philadelphia when we get back to it.
That will be an evening game on I just it's
it's the name brand, and it's the same problem that
(16:30):
that you know, like I felt with with Tampa. But
Tampa could actually win their division and make the playoffs
like we expect all Green Bay screen Bay. There was
there was nothing in that win against Dallas, Mike, aside
from the comeback that would have let us think that
green Bay was about to turn the page. That this
(16:50):
was maybe you know, the Christian Watson coming out party,
maybe it was one thing. But again, this is a
team that was down fourteen points, needed a late rally,
needed uh some questionable play calling by Dallas in overtime,
and then you know, utilize the short field and took
advantage and won the game and overtime. That that's all
(17:10):
that that was. That wasn't a we imposed our will
upon Dallas. They kind of got away with the one,
you know, and and then they come into a team
tonight that has a much you know, bigger margin of
error because of how close to the vest they play.
I mean, the one time that they try to open
it up, Ryan Tannehill ends up getting picked off, and
(17:31):
you know, they learned their lesson. But like, there's not
a lot of there are not a lot of margins
for green Bay to to come away with, you know,
victory in this game. But we see that they have
Aaron Rodgers, and we see that they're the green Bay Packers,
and we still think that they're they're legit, they're they're
they're closer to the worst team in the a f
NFC than they are to the best team and it's
not even close. Another record bruise it. Yeah, I wasn't
looking for some massive runaway victory. I thought they could
(17:54):
grind went out here and I thought you'd get the
sense of urgency, you'd have more success on the ground
and and take nothing from Tennessee. They came in with
a bunch of defensive injuries. Thought the short week, and
certainly Roger's history in short weeks and obviously past performance
not indicative of future returns. We know that from all
our financial uh documentation through the years. But short rest
(18:16):
twenty four and sixth straight up eighteen eleven and one
against the spread, while at a loss for both of
those columns, certainly tonight UH so that that certainly stands out.
The other is, you know, we we go through and
from the betting world in the fantasy right as you're
trying to make your prognostications. Percent of the betting handle
(18:39):
tonight was on Derrick count Henry to go over ninety
nine and a half rushing yards. He finished with twenty
eight carreas eighties seven yards. Unfortunately, the two catches for
forty five yards and the four passing yards in touchdown
don't help you toward that total. So people lost UH
in that particular wager. But for passing yards for Derrick, yeah,
(19:03):
I think he probably hit the over for that. Certainly
add the touchdown to will Derrick Henry throw a passing touchdown?
He had four yards, but they are on two completions. Yeah,
that little jump pass was fantastic to Austin Hooper. Hooper
the receiving star of the night. Four catches thirty six yards,
including that UH touchdown that really sealed the deal for
(19:25):
Tennessee Tannehill three thirty three two and that pick that
we talked about for absorbed three sacks, but the play
action passed, showing how deadly it can be even in
the late UH throw to Traylon Birch, Welcome back, rook. Uh.
Seven catches on eight targets a hundred eleven yards, including
the play just before the two minute warning, Like wow,
(19:46):
if someone hates Matt Lafleur, someone on the staff. But
as you astutely point out, on that side of the
two minute warning, and whether it falls incomplete or gets
caught or whatever, it's still going to take it to
the two minute warning. Uh as you roll through just
more of the alright it Tannehill throws another pick there
down the sideline. I don't know that he's gonna be
able to come up and make another tackle, but it
(20:08):
goes for a big completion. And and Burke's was a
guy we gave out as a a waiver wire pick
up this past week. So hopefully you you got him
into your lineup as it flows. Henry with the big
night Tannehill. Interesting, I think as we we have the
final run of bye weeks, these next three weeks, you've
got Aaron Rodgers on the other side. Was it an
(20:29):
exciting game? Now? He gave you two touchdowns? In right,
it's it's an average kind of night. Nothing in the
rushing game, Aaron Jones just forty yards once again. A J.
Dillon's a by standard with six carry's and thirteen yards.
But the time of possession again, we we talked about
it a little bit earlier. There's two to one going
(20:51):
to halftime, right the long second second quarter drive. They
had two drives that total nearly thirteen minutes of playing time,
so a lot of time for the pack to just
walk around. I was picturing the The Phantom Menace. I
don't know, I don't know how if you've gotten into
the Star Wars world yet of the newer ones. Soon enough, Dan,
soon enough, I'll give you. Uh, I'll send you a password.
(21:14):
I did collect Star Wars figurines that I was a kid.
You still have them? No? No? And if they did,
their feet and hands were probably chewed off by Yeah,
well that's we we look. If you lost a lightsaber
fighting our our place, you lost an arm, leg or
head with it. So we had a lot of guys
that were glued back together. I know my cousins had
(21:35):
some pretty pristine stuff that they took great care of. Uh.
So hopefully they still have those in their possession, because
they had some of the rare guys. Uh, the you know,
the random characters that appeared in massive scenes. But I
was thinking, there's there's a scene in The Phantom Menace. Uh,
the great character Darth Ball that they used for all
they advertising and merchandizing, right, red face, red and black. Uh.
(21:58):
And he's got the spikes, and he's got the double
sided lightsaber, all of this, and there's this sequence where
because of the the doors right, so you can see through,
but you've got the the energy flowing and it's waiting
and feeling like he's caged right, He's got that whole
caged animal staring you down. Thing. I was kind of
(22:18):
feeling like the same thing here with with some of
the the action as we watched it in this Tennessee
uh green Bay game. But it's it's an interesting dynamic
as we we flow out of it. You know, the
green Bay defense was not up to the task down
the field, right, and and that's the thing, right, But
(22:41):
again with Ryan Tannehill on the other side, I think
everybody predicted and like I read off that bet you
were expecting the massive run game and maybe some work
from Tannehill instead. The deep ball was there all night.
And I know they've been besieged by injury, have the
Packers and Rashaan Gary being out certainly doesn't help matters.
But getting carved up like this, big play after big play,
(23:05):
even with that trick play at the at the goal line,
but the fact that Tannehill was able to die sect things,
um just kind of shows you the last six games
for the Packers is gonna be a long slog. Yeah, yeah,
and and and if you look at that their ledger
um outside of that complete anomaly that game with the
Lions where you know it's fifteen to nine, the constant
(23:29):
is is green Bay has their opponents scored more than
twenty points. And I thought green Bay. I think green
Bay to win the Super Bowl because I thought that
everything was coming together, but also because I just thought
their defense was going to be so good and it
has been so below average this year. They've I mean,
there aren't any plays. Their best game was against Tampa,
(23:51):
who was having their complete owned mid left crisis going on.
And not to make a joke about Tom Brady, that
was really well done though. Yeah that was good because
we are the midpoint of the season, midlife crisis. That
was pretty good. You can see the Faith No More
song while you're that. Unfortunately was only a week three,
but they were having a whole bunch of problems with Tampa,
so so like that was like the only thing that
(24:13):
green Bay could hang their head on and be like, look,
we were able to keep Tom Brady and the Buccaneers
offense and check where a lot of people were keeping
the Buccaneer's offense and check. There are a lot of
problems with Aaron Rodgers in the offense, but a big
portion of why Green Bays four and seven is because
their defense has just been atrocious. Yeah, they're great expectations.
I had the same. I didn't believe that they'd win
(24:35):
in the playoffs because well, they've shown me they can't.
But I thought they'd at least be in competition to
get there, owing to the idea that you've got a
two time m v P, you've got stability from the
coaching side of things. Even if the young players were
gonna need to come in and take on a bigger role,
the run game would be more efficient. And I know
they've had some issues on the offensive line, but old adages,
(24:58):
if you play, then you have to perform like we don't.
You don't get half credit. We're going, oh, you gave
it the old college trying. No, you didn't perform well,
and tonight couldn't run the football. Uh, and then defense
couldn't get off the field once again. And so just
another miserable loss with the you know, body language and
the questions that you could pile up five or six
(25:21):
places we'll hear from Rogers as he gets to the
post game, Uh, this celebration for Ryan Tannehill and everybody.
As you get into the post game for the Tennessee
side of things, as they send the Lambeau Faithful home,
said tonight, you know what's interesting, like is that the
way that Tennessee played is actually the way that green
(25:41):
Bay wants to play. And like, like, that's the recipe
that I thought Green Bay was going to have. Well,
the defense that gets after the quarterback and again the
Rashan Gary, its rehurts. But Rashan Garry was with the
team for the first half of the season, so that
you know, there was no excuse in that part running
the football. And while they don't have Rick Henry, they've
kind of Aaron Jones at AJ Dillon. And and so
(26:03):
if I mean, if if you want to have a
poor man's Derrick Henry, I guess it could be a
j Dillon in that sense, But now you also have
another threat out of the backfield and Jones and and
so Tennessee lost their best receiver, traded him away. What
did green Bay do you know? And so so the
place that Ryan Tannehill was making on Thursday night, where
the plays that Aaron Rodgers I think was expected to
(26:23):
make for the green Bay Packers and having that defense
make the places that they've made for Tennessee where the
defense or the place that the green Bay defense were
expected to make and it's just not happening. Lastly, just
the quick fantasy point welcome back Randall Cobbs six for six,
seventy three yards, Lazard with eleven targets, five for fifty seven.
But Christian Watson have yourself a week young man four
(26:45):
forty two touchdown, six targets on the night, giving him
five for the week. So he and Cold Commit will
battle it out for great fantasy stats for teams that
can't win games in the NFC North. Be order to
catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike

have they ever won the MVP Award. I'm gonna go Diamondbacks. Diamondbacks,
