(00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Hello, Welcome inside final
hour tonight the Jason Smith Show with my best friend
Mike harm at HOBO live from the tire Rack dot
Com studios where Yes, I made it back after my
colonoscopy a day ago. Happy birthday, Barty, feeling much better
(00:46):
to was kind of out of it, lightheaded for most
of the day yesterday Today it was a different day
in Mike Carmon just that beautiful and said it bad.
Today's a different day, no do you You woke up
and you turned another year older. Right, it's another day,
but it counts as a year. So we're proud of
you that you know, the tickers still going, that you
(01:08):
got through the procedure. You tormented some doctors and nurses,
no doubt. Usc U c l A rivalry. Abit, No,
it's good. No, no, They like, all right, all right, yes,
it's not that I got a colonoscopy for my birthday.
It just so happened. I mean, well, but they want
to schedule him at different miles stones. Normally it's at fifty.
(01:29):
You decided to uh test the limits of that and
go for another couple of years, so you are my
my My doctor said listen, you can wait another you
know it would wait to do it sometime in two
I said, okay, great, and uh. I initially had it
scheduled for in December, and then they called me to
listen to your doctor is not available. Doctor's going on
(01:52):
vacation for a month. I like, your your your doctor's
got yeah, your your doctors Robert Sala, and he's gonna
be busy in December and January with the off So
I said okay, and they said, hey, we got it
for November seventeen. I was like, oh, they said, oh,
what's wrong with that? I said to day before my birthday?
I said, can I get another day? And they said yeah.
And sometime in February I have like, h dude, dude,
(02:12):
there's no chance you want Robert Sala anywhere near that
type of procedure. You think he's kind of delicate. No chance, no, no, no, no.
I want the Robert Sala, Not the Robert salat the
beginning of this season where he was in way over
his head. I want the Robert Sala. Now that's the one.
I was still an intense and angry guy. I don't
I don't think I want him performing that particular procedure
(02:34):
on me. You don't want an intense doctor. I want
an intense He's gonna be intense. He's gonna be into it.
He's gonna be into it. You just said he's going
to be into it. I don't want a doctor that
doesn't care. Hey, I don't want a doctor that's texting
while he's doing the procedure. No, but they love me
at U c l A because I got my procedure
(02:54):
done at U c l A yesterday, And when the
nurse came in to talk to me right before the procedure,
she said, Okay, here's a deal. Now, don't do anything,
don't sign any papers, make any big decision to next
twenty four hours, and you're gonna be lightheaded. You're gonna
be out of it until about this time tomorrow. I said, okay,
that's fine. So she said, I'm gonna come back in
with a with a thing for you to sign. I'm
gonna send you a text message that tells you to
(03:16):
to to click the okay that we can give you
anesthesia and for the procedure. It's like a final thing
you need do. Say yeah, okay, great. So they put
in the pick line to me that that is that
sedates you a little bit. So at the time she
comes back in, she goes, here's a text. I said, okay, great,
And she says to me, and just so you know,
when you get this text, the password to type in
and she said, it just like this. The password to
(03:38):
type end is you see l A. And said it
just like that, like the like the like the fight song.
Chang said, you see l A. And I said blank
sc except I didn't say blank. Look well, she goes oh,
And all of a sudden, people around her go oh.
Everybody in the in the office it was getting ready
for the procedures, like oh, because that's all they're talking
(03:58):
about is this game. You know you cel met it.
That's all they're talking about is this game. And so
now I'm like the hero. I'm like, you know, I
blank and see because I don't know what I'm saying
because I'm really just loopy. And so then she starts
telling me jokes like you all these u c l
A at us, how do you keep usc UH students
out of your backyard? I don't know how put up
goalposts all, you know, just stuff like that. Right. So
(04:19):
they so they take me to all they We're talking
about the game a little bit and I'm like, oh, yeah,
this is great, this is great. And then they gave
me the the anesthesia and it was I was done.
And then he said, okay, sir, we're finished. I'm like,
oh boy, that wasn't so bad at all. That was
that was fantastic. They loved me there at U c
l A love me, love me, love me. They probably
I probably got like extra stuffy they fixed on me
just because I said that. For U c l A.
(04:41):
I'm a close personal friend of Ryan holland you better
not screw this up. Ryan Hollan is that he had
that beat and bounced past this guy. Whoa, whoa, whoa.
It's good though. I'm glad. I'm glad it went down. Okay,
and then you know you came out the other side,
you texting and tweeting pretty shortly thereafter, so we were
(05:03):
pretty convinsed. You're all right me and my wife said
to me when I said, what do you do? When
I said, I'm retweeting the best of that they put out,
she was just put put your phone down, put your if.
I said, well, I think I'm okay here. If afraid,
if you're gonna put something, you look at Twitter, which
was I mean, no matter what you would have put out,
there would have still been that calmest, most innocuous tweet possible.
(05:26):
I mean, I saw a guy running around on Twitter
instead of the whale tale. I saw a guy with
a fiddle. No. But I was like, oh, I'm fine, Yeah,
we're going to get something to eat. I want to
make sure I tweet this out. You know, we put
they put together stuff for our best. Put the phone away,
put the phone away, don't text anybody. But I was like, okay, okay,
And I put the phone away and realized that was
(05:47):
the right call. That completely because I always know when
to put my phone away and not tweet, Like if
I'm watching a game on a Sunday and you know,
it's later in the afternoon. I'm like, I know this
is not the time to tweet. I know had enough alcohol.
I've this is not this is this is not the
time for me to get onto Twitter. This is not it.
But but I just thought I was okay, I just
lightheads to put the phone down. Just just put the phone, okay, okay,
(06:08):
good advice. Yeah. So it was alright tweeting that out,
and then I really didn't feel great, feel back to
being normal until around maybe nine o'clock last night. I
was like, Okay, now I'm starting to feel okay after
I had a nap and everything. But I'm just I'm
just glad it was over. And what was on the sandwich?
It was a great sandwich. Was for shudo and horse
radish and cheddar cheese and mayo and onions and Deli mustard.
(06:32):
It was glorious. Oh man, I couldn't wait to eat.
It was the best it was going. This is the
first bite of food I've had in like thirty eight hours.
I gotta have it right now. They even said, hey, um,
you can eat right away. I said great, And they said,
but you might want to wait like an hour. I
said why, because well, just in case you wind up.
We don't want you get a little nauseous. I'm like, yeah,
(06:53):
I think I'm gonna be fine, and I would. We
had a sandwich right there. I'm like, I'm gonna eat
right away. I had half my sandwich. My wife says,
why don't you waiting now to make sure you're okay.
I'm like, okay, I waited five minutes. I said, I'm okay.
I would eat the rest of them the sandwich, and
I ate the rest of the sandwich. Gone like that gone.
That's um, next level stuff and and highly anticipated. So welcome,
(07:15):
welcome back, and a happy birthday to you, Thank you,
blessed travels, all that fun stuff. Big week ahead of
us sporting. Yeah, no, exactly. I think I ordered a
pair of socks for him that that alluded to that. Okay, No,
it had something to do with the fist. No, it's
it's Robert Sala's face on the socks saying Zach Wilson's
(07:36):
our guy, saying Zach is great. We're not holding him
back at all. No, no, no, I think we love that.
Robert Sala socks would actually be pretty cool. We're gonna
turning the pumpkin in two weeks. What are you talking about?
You can just say solo socks. I mean, who wouldn't
want to buy solo socks? Cool, it's it's alliterative, it's
everything you want, solo socks. I want those there. You go, well,
we'll have to put those up and see how many
(07:57):
we can sell. When's the last time you wore coming back?
I'm wearing socks right now? Are you kidding? Wearing socks
all the time? My dad doesn't wear I don't think
my dad's worn socks. Regret that question. I don't know.
My dad hasn't worn socks since nineteen eighty nine. Dude, Frostberg,
I mean, it's ten o'clock. Why is there a sock
(08:18):
on your dad's door? Not not on. We haven't had
a Walter reference in a while, though, so, I mean
that's pretty good. He's been quiet. Just see expulsion of
the Yankees from the process. That's the thing. The sock
on my dad's door means, don't disturb me watching the Yankees,
don't go ash watching Judge highlights before he leaves. Oh
(08:40):
oh hey, well, speaking of baseball, let's get into this
for a couple I mean, do we have to. We're
gonna head to Vegas. You got no we have Well,
you're you're losing the guys. I'm not m you. You
pop champagne like you were. Mercury strikes out more than
Jason in high school. Yeah, I did start a lot
on that school did Hey, hey, hundred percent of the
(09:02):
shots you don't take me. I didn't become a disciple
of the Walt Rinniac hitting style and until I got
in the college and suddenly that's what I'm talking about,
and that's what I'm talking ab. No, I was a
Walt Rindiac with the ladies and in college. Uh. Good
(09:22):
reference that three people got. Uh. Cody Mellinger is now
a free agent. This is a guy who won the
m v P in Be sure to catch live editions
of The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at
ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific. Two thousand and nineteen,
(09:43):
twenty seven years old. The Dodgers have decided they're going
to move on from him now. Potentially they could bring
him back in the lower salary. He was expected to
make one year and twenty three million dollars next year.
But this is a guy who has struggled in a
large way for three seasons. Okay, again, winning the m
v P. That's great, twenty in a short season, not
(10:05):
very good one in a in a fuller season, even
worse this year in a hundred forty four games, he
still hit two ten all right, and the Dodgers have realized, Okay,
this is a guy who was the m v P
in ten and he just hasn't gotten right. And I
get that. There's a big school of thought. You know,
people we've talked to that said, listen, his approach at
(10:26):
the plate isn't what you wanted to be. And it's
either him needing to understand he's got to approach at
matts differently. Whether he realizes it or just doesn't have
the desire to do it, you know, that's up in
the air. But he doesn't. He's been struggling because his
his approach to the plate has not been what you
wanted to be. But here's the thing. In an era
now where teams are gonna go for Hey, let's build
(10:47):
a ninety win team and we can go make the
big moves of the deadline if we need to. We
don't need to sink hundreds of millions of dollars into
our team in the off season to win a hundred
ten games. Look, the Mets and the Dodgers did it.
They are out of the playoffs pretty early. Padres and
the Phillies neither of them won ninety games there in
the NLCS. So you're gonna see teams doing that now
planning more to be ninety win teams. Let's spend like
(11:09):
if we were a ninety win team and then we
make big moves during the season, right, we want to
go if if it's our year, we can make moves
to get to the playoffs. Cody Bellinger, as bad as
he has been, I would love for the Mets or
for anybody you got a hole in center field. There's
two guys out there, right, Brandon Nimmo and Cody Bellinger.
Brendanimo is gonna cost you a hundred and forty million
(11:30):
dollars for six years. He's thirty years old for a
guy that finally stayed healthy last year. I love Brandon Nimmo,
but come on, man, that's a lot of money. But
Cody Bellinger for like one year and twelve million dollars
where you can say, hey, we're gonna try to get
you back to the player you were, Uh, that's a gamble.
I would take seven days out of seven because, no
matter what, you're getting a gold Glove center fielder, which
(11:52):
is almost worth its weight right there, because he's still
that good in center field, and all you want him
to do is not hit to ten in hit to
fifty and everything is okay. Because if you're paying twelve
million dollars for a Gold Globe center fielder who's gonna
give you twenty home runs probably a d r B
I s into two fifty. Yeah, you're gonna win a
lot of games with a guy like that. His war
(12:12):
is gonna be up in your three maybe three and
a half. Yes, I go in for Bellinger and say, listen,
one year, twelve million, you're gonna play center field. You're
gonna play every day. We get a lot of that
bats for you, and hopefully you're cashing it, and we're
talking to contract extension after this year. Yeah, I mean
the big thing obviously hitting for contact. And I saw
a bunch of this on Twitter earlier because it's kind
(12:33):
of funny, you know, folks saying yeah, for all you
slappy's in the media that you know played junior high
or maybe you played in through high school and you
had your your you know, stat lines and whatever else
and here's your split, uh, you know for comment together. Yeah,
you're you're trying to be a professional hitter. The idea
that you put the ball in play is not really
(12:55):
a foreign concept or should it be that revolutionary or
in sending area that you're getting mad about it, like
you think it's even know, that's the point. It's hard.
So to stay at top your game and to be
a relevant player. Yes, you need to put the ball
in play. For Cody Bellinger, even when he did it,
they weren't great at bats. Not often. You start breaking
(13:16):
down guys numbers and over the last two seasons, see
a ball's batting average on balls and play that's two
seventy four. Like that's so low, so so add all
the strikeouts, bad at bats? Whatever is real versus you
know someone in the clubhouse, you know, just talking out
(13:37):
of school um in terms of his approach and willingness
to learn. You know, your twenty seven years old, Your
past m v P had three fantastic years upon arriving
to Major League Baseball, and even the power numbers this
past year solid he had a couple of times stretches
where it's like, all right, he's starting to find it,
and just as soon as he recognized it, they moved
(14:00):
to the next city or do you know, the homestand
ended and he forgot how to hit again. And so
trying to find some level of consistency at the plate
for ten to twelve million dollars, Yeah, you take that shot,
and in the interim, that's that's a guy that is
probably gonna save you a runner two. Absolutely along the
way that that's for for teams that are grinding out games.
(14:24):
It's a worthwhile investment. And if it hits and he
does change the approach and you start seeing some someonance
of the the old guy and and by that I
mean someone that's gonna hit two forty, then yeah, you're
feeling pretty good that you've got yourself a bargain. Be

Insider Extraordinary, Todd Firm and Todd. What's happening buddy? You
know what Smiths? So one thing about this segment on
Friday nights, it's always a pleasure to look forward to
you remind me that the NBA is actually going. I
always thought Opening Night with Christmas Day, but when we
do these hits, I get updated on exactly how the
(15:51):
Lakers have performed, or in this case this season, how
they haven't performed. Well, it's it's opening Day every Day
for like a month and a half of the NBA
with all these mad I mean, they found a way
to make opening Day go for the beginning in November
to like the middle of December. It's pretty impressive and
it's a marketing machine. And the craziest part about it,
I think Kawhi Leonard has logged about twenty two minutes
of actual basketball time all season long. So we'll see
(16:11):
what he makes the season debut on Christmas as well.
That is very well said, very very sporadic appearances by
Kawhi Leonard thus far. We're talking a lot about this
college football weekend, obviously being located here in southern California, USC,
the narrow favorite U C l A. Not a lot
of defense expected in this one. Todd, where's the breakdown? Yeah,
(16:34):
I mean, do you guys, I mean, given the cachet
you carry throughout that metropolitan market, you guys get sideline credentials.
You get a chance to rub elbows with Snoop A,
Will Ferrell and everybody else for a game of this magnitude.
To me, now you I've been hanging out with the
contact high for this show is just it's incredible when
you look at the showdown, and obviously a lot more
(16:55):
at stake this year than what we've seen in previous years. Total.
In this game, as you mentioned in the mid to
high seventies, it doesn't appear to have a lot of defense.
We're gonna be played at least on the surface. But
at the same time, I'm curious to see if the
U c l A offense can regain some of its
swagger that it had for the majority of Pack twelve
play up until last weekend for a much maligned Arizona
defense held them in check. We know they've been dealing
(17:16):
with a couple of injuries. We'll see if Kazmir Allen
is able to go to give U. C l A
that one to punch in the receiving room. But it
should be a steady dose, is Zack Sharbon And on
the other side for sc when you look at their offense,
what did they lose in productivity but maybe more importantly
in leadership and pass blocking. When a key cog like
Travis Da goes out, you obviously want to kind of
rally around that. And I think the receiving corp will
(17:37):
be healthier with George Addison and Mario Williams there's no
doubt that this will be musty TV and probably the
game that I think everyone in the college football world
is looking forward to see. I'll tell you Todd, as
I see two episodes, I see U c l A
beating USC and I see Baylor beat in tc U.
I that one of the first things I said, and
we talked about this Earl in the show. Vegas knows
something because this is an undefeated TCU team against a
(17:59):
bailor team with full a loss, and you're talking about
a three point spread. Well, I mean power rating wise,
I mean, look this coming from someone that was on
Texas last week late seven was able to rip up
his ticket at halftime, So take it with a grain
of salt. I've upgraded TCU substantially throughout the course of
the season, but my number on this game, guys actually
came to pick him. So I'm in that camp again
looking to bet against TCU. We'll see how it works
(18:20):
out tomorrow with an eleven o'clock central kickoff, grabbing ne eleven,
grabbing eleven, grabbing the three. With the home underdog there,
USC and U c l A. Is interesting because you
have seen the market adjust a little bit based on
perception in the wake of U. C l A going
down is nearly a three touchdown favor last week against Arizona.
I make USC at one point favor here, so I
don't think the market is that far off. I didn't
(18:41):
grab three initially like on U c l A, like
I was anticipating, because I think there may be a
couple of red flags for this bruin side. We'll see
who gets off to a quick start. And like we
talked about, which team can actually get a key stop
or force that critical turnover to allow one team to
play on its front foot. Yeah, to stay with TCU
a second, Todd, going back to that game last week,
as we talked about everything, just spoke not only Texas
(19:06):
being favored, but just given the defensive woes that TCU
had had in many of its spots, given up twenty
five a game, nearly four hundred yards to put up
the effort they did against Texas, And I think you
just scratch your scratch your head and say, Okay, they
got me on this one, because yeah, I mean nothing,
nothing made sense. I mean that's the whole thing in
this business. And it's always funny because people are always
(19:27):
automatically assumed that when you bet the biggest games, if
you lose those, they somehow hurt more. I mean, I
had to take it on usf tonight that I think
eight people watch and maybe less they were actually in attendance.
The money is just as green as you can find
elsewhere in the landscape. But to your point, when you
look at TCU defensively, that felt like an outlier more
than anything else. They played with their hair on fire.
They were faster, they were more athletic, and Queenne, you
(19:48):
were wilted under the way to that moment. The hundred
million dollar question, this is gonna be a little bit
more of a sleepy atmosphere in Waco. Can the Bears
return the favor for what TCU did them last year
when Baylor at an outside chance to get into the
College Football Playoff as a top five team. So always
fastening to see these games unfold, and gentlemen, I wouldn't
be surprised if when you wake up tomorrow morning you're
looking at TCU even a shorter favorite than what's currently
(20:11):
going on in the market. Right now. All right, let's
head to the NFL on Sunday, Game of the Week
of Vikings and the Cowboys. Vikings are able to escape,
they get the big escape against the Bills. I like
the Cowboys coming in this week with a victory. The
defense has a big day against Kirk Cousins. How do
you like it? Now? I'm right there with you. I
think this is a bounce back spot for the Cowboys here.
(20:32):
Minnesota talked about how emotional and how physical the game
was against Buffalo, and like we discussed all the time
in the NFL, it's such a league based on what
have you done for me lately? How much different is
this narrative going into the game in Minnesota if the
Cowboys don't blow lead at Lambou against Green Bay and
Minnesota isn't able to rally all the way back from
(20:52):
a twenty seven to ten deficit at one point, including
that Botch snap that gave them that lifeline there. The
Vikings have been a very, very good football team him.
I think they're a little bit fortunate, but it's not
just by coincidence that they're winning these one score games
that they consistently were on the wrong end of last
year with more of a defensive minded head coach. But
while you never like to say a team gets caught
potentially overlooking the Cowboys a little bit of a unique
(21:15):
scheduling quirk here in Minnesota play on Thanksgiving much like
Dallas will, and that game could catch their eye a
little bit more so. I think you're gonna get the
Cowboys best effort here. The key will be Anthony Barr.
Can he return and contribute the linebacker position. Because Michael
Parsons had a shift, there was a non factor in
the pass rush. If Parsons is able to get back
to his disruptive ways, I think the potential absence of
(21:35):
Christian Daris along that Vikings offensive line can be the
deciding matchup. Jason Smits Young with Mike Rmen here Fox
Sports Radio guests that joins us in Friday talking about
things college and pro football. It's Todd Ferman. You find
him on the Bet the Board podcast at bet the
Board for Now, in the Twitter verse at Todd Ferman
as well. All things you need to be smarter as
(21:57):
you make your investments on a given week and or
try to win bar bets, talking to folks as well
as they get ready for games. So Todd the the
game that we have to to break down sixty four
in our sixty six inches of snow the last twenty
four hours. So Cleveland Buffalo gets relocated to Detroit. We
have the over under jumps by a full touchdown, Bills
(22:19):
a seven and a half point favorite. I know there
was I guess the big discussion of one tickets, which
is fine, home field advantage and whatever else, but the
other being how did books handle this? Did most canceled
bets that had already been in because of the change
of venue. Most books will indeed void the bat when
you change destination or location for a game to take
(22:41):
place for a lot of the reasons you outline, their
automatically becomes a refund. However, there was a very prominent
sports book that as long as the same home team
remained with that designation, they weren't going to refund bets.
So what happens Friday afternoon? Professional betters know where those
loopholes are in the house rules. They're looking to pile
in a betting over the total at forty one and
(23:01):
a half, knowing that this game was going to get
moved to a faster track. You're able to beat the
market by a full touchdown, and if you want to
try and protect your investment. You're betting the game under
the total, hoping that books that do void those bets
end up canceling your ticket and you're able to try
and catch basically the best of both numbers here. So
that's why you're arrived at Buffalo is a seven and
a half point favorite total forty nine and a half.
(23:23):
What's interesting about the forty nine and a half, guys,
that's even higher than where the number opened for when
they were scheduled to play in Buffalo, that one was
forty seven and a half. And I think it just
speaks to the climate control conditions, a faster track, and
obviously better communication for both these teams on the offensive
and defensive side, because I can't anticipate either team will
have a true home field advantage. Can you bet that
there's no game? Can you bet that there's no game?
(23:48):
That was not an option that I saw posted. It
may be something that if you find it at one
of the obscure offshore books, um, but it was definitely
interesting when you watch that snowfall and try and figure
out if there's anybody that can put all of those
broken ables the good use. Maybe Bill's mafia turns him
into sleds or toboggan. They put him on the back
of pickup truck and suddenly you see them zipping across
the interstate trying to get into Detroit and time for kickoff.
(24:11):
I like the way you think UH Sunday Night Football
cheaps down a couple of wide receivers, but a new UH,
I guess emerging star in Kadarius Tony. Total on this
one is fifty two Chargers at least in theory, getting
their wide receiving coreback. So maybe a nice battle in
the f C West ahead of the holiday, a combination
of factors for just what you said, their harm one
(24:32):
team down a couple of weapons and know they're gonna
look significantly healthy, healthier, at least that's the expectation right now.
Going in, you get Keenan Allen and Mike Williams back
in the fold, you Adam to Josh Palmer and some
of the other weapons that have emerged in their absences. Meanwhile,
Kansas City will see what life looks like without Mikole
Hardenman and Juju Smith Schuster. So that's why this number
that opened seven has tacked down to five. You're seeing
(24:53):
the total leak out from forty nine and a half
to fifty two. I'm interested to see how high this
total goes. I think we're talking think about buying stocks
at the top of the market, operating under the assumption
that both these offenses will go out there and be
able to score points in bunches. You don't have an
extensive sample size, but these two quarterbacks doing battle only
four games thus far, three and one of the under
What is interesting is how well Kansas City has performed
(25:15):
on the road against the Chargers in the last eight meetings.
I believe their numbers are seven and one against the spread,
and it just talks to more about how the Chargers
are typically overvalued when they play at home despite not
having much of a home field. They're only numbers. Numbers
don't get in the way of how we make decisions
in this business. You know what the good thing is
for you, Frost, Every game is a snowflake, and you

could throw out the data. When teams like this do battle.
You can fall them on Twitter at Todd Ferman, that
is at Todd Furman and check them out bet the

appreciate your time. My friend, we'll talk to you next
week after the Jets snap that thirteen game losing streak
to the Patriots. You know, always a pleasure. You know what, Smith,
you must be very superstitious. This is the first time
(25:58):
we haven't talked about a Jets game month, this Friday
hit all season long, and this may arguably be the
most meaningful ones they're going to play the second half
of the season to set that pace in tone. Well,
I know you. I knew you must think that Jets
are going to win, because the first thing you would
say is, you know, Smith, here on a Friday night,
you sounded pretty happy for a guy whose Jets are
gonna lose by fifty on Sunday. But I'm not thinking
three change, and I think Zack Wilson. You know, if
(26:20):
he gets the ball out of his hands quickly, they
have a puncher's chance. And I exercise a little bit
discretion here. I didn't take shots at a team that's
taking on water faster than Western New York in the
form of your beloved syracusing orange. On that note, gentlemen,
have a great weekend. Brother, The best
