All the lads. We'll talk Brock Purty. We'll talk the
Steelers quarterback situation, which is the worst, most embarrassing one
in the league. What's next for Odell Beckham? Great stuff
from Ja coming up, But gonna play a little bit
(01:06):
and you're gonna hear a little bit of Rock Purty
and Kyle Shanahan. Now after the Niners win tonight and
they clinch the NFC West. You know, I'm going back
a couple of weeks now because when Purdy made his debut,
it was just a little bit different. Right, What did
I tell you was gonna happen? The Niners are going
to the NFC Championship Game. They were gonna play the Eagles, right,
(01:26):
because I told the Eagles are my Super Bowl pick.
Niners of the team they were gonna face because the
Niners are quarterback proof and Purdie's not only given them hey, okay, performance,
but he's someone who has given them more than they expect.
I mean, the guy plays with a lot of guts, right,
He makes throws and makes plays. You go, man, the
(01:47):
game is not too big for him. That the teammates
love and like it's like I said, it's like the
Niners are a little bit better version of the Jets.
We spend all the time talking about Mike White. Well,
Brock Purdy is a little bit better Mike White, and
the Niners are a little bit better Jets. That that's
kind of what they are. And it was all because
the Niners are quarterback proof. They are so talented everywhere
(02:08):
that as long as Brock Purty or whoever plays quarterback
comes in and you don't throw up on yourself, you're
gonna be fine. Now Purdy has been better than that.
He's been making throws. At boy, that was a big down.
It's a big time throw. He is. He is one
of the reasons. He's not just a guy that you
have to hide. It's not like the Jets that when
they were winning with Zach Wilson, we gotta hide and
make sure you don't give him too much, or the
Steelers trying to hide Kenny Pickett, whatever it was. This was, Hey,
(02:31):
we're allowing him to do a lot. He's had a
long time with the playbook and he can get out
there and make plays. And here's Kyle Shanahan tonight following
the game, basically saying what I told you a couple
of weeks ago about the Niners being quarterback proof. Our
defense is unbelievable. They did to me throughout the whole
game and had one lapse there, two plays on that
final drive. But they've been unbelievable all year and they're
(02:53):
continuing it. And here's Brock Purdy saying, yes, I am
I am just one cog in this incredible, the big
wheel of victories here in San Francisco. It's special and everything.
But man, honestly, I'm just like another component. I'm another
piece of this team. Um in terms of a guy
coming in just doing what he's asked of, you know, Um,
I'm the quarterback. I have to make decisions I trust
(03:14):
and how the coaches teach me throughout the week. I'm
just a guy. I'm just a guy. Man. I'm just
a guy standing in front of a reporter asking him
to keep asking me questions about how I'm winning. And
I missed the irrelevant. Look at me right now. Brock
Purdy is legit. We looked legit two weeks ago. Sometimes
you can just tell guys when they come in with
(03:35):
a certain kind of swag or a certain kind of confidence.
And he's been that guy. And the Niners, hey, just
get the ball of the weapons. That's all. They ask
you to get the ball of the weapons. They will
do their thing, whether it's Deebo, whether it's you tonight
it was George Kittle, it doesn't matter. We'll like Christian
McCaffrey do his thing. It doesn't matter. The Niners are
so loaded and Brock Purdy is giving them not what
(03:55):
they expected, He's giving them what they hoped he would be. Hey,
we hope that he can even be a bigger guy.
And right now, if you had to say who the
best quarterback on the Niners roster is talent wise, and
you had Purdy and Jimmy g and Trey Lance, your answers, Purty,
as I often like to do. I mean, we go
to the lyrical wizardry of Ian Anderson aiming high were
(04:17):
the eagles circles where he keeps his tail feathers clean,
and wonders, am I as still a free bird or
just part of the machine? Rock Purty said, I'm part
of the machine man, I'm the cog. I'm one of
the guys that makes it go. And while that defense
is flying around, I like that Shanahan while extolling the
virtues and praising his defense, because yeah, a couple of
(04:39):
plays where they really screwed that up, you know, to
kind of let them back in the game. Be sure
to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app.
We'll talk about that in film review. No, uh, but
what you got a squad that is clicking on all
(05:01):
cylinders right with McCaffrey in the back backfield, Jordan Mason
comes in with the big run. He runs tough between
the tackles, uh and has picked up the loss of
Elijah Elijah Mitchell, just like Jimmy Garoppolo, just like Trey Lance.
Next guy up right at the cliche. But for the
forty nine is what they built with this squad, with
(05:23):
their depth and right now, with a bunch of superstars
at big time positions, what do you need? You need
people that can catch the ball, run the ball, and
terrorize opposing quarterbacks. Check check, check, And then Trent Williams
who just dances and keeps pretty upright to get that
(05:46):
extra slide step to find an open receiver in this
case twice. Look at the plays to Kittle, big time throws,
big time space. Just put the ball out and he's
wide open. Some breakdowns and coverages, which has been part
of the Seahawks season. But where you're sitting right now,
you're you're feeling pretty good if you're Shanahan, because you've
(06:08):
got a guy who is more than just the quote
game manager. A lot of postgame comments from the forty
Niners that they were fully anticipating game Plan B, which was,
we really need to go run heavy, and all the
receivers have to go in and and emphasize their blocking
(06:28):
a bit a bit more, maybe more of Kittle working
on the line instead of getting out and passed pass routes,
but instead pretty comes through a couple of times holding
the ribs early in the game. I mean, we watched
it on air as we were on air, and and
certainly you know, noting that a couple of times he
(06:50):
felt like he was gonna get under a bit of
pressure and wanted to make sure he covered up. I
don't know that he had a flat jacket on. We'll
have to ask that question. But the point being that
they trust him with the offense. And that's a huge
thing to do because normally what as you as you
mentioned with pick it and others, you try to what
(07:11):
simplify it. Sometimes you just take the pejorative dumb it down. Here,
Now fly around. You've got all those weapons, go and
utilize them, you know. Here, and here's what's even more
impressive about the Niners, right, Okay, here's more impressed about
the Niners is that this is a team that came
into the season and they lost a lot of coaches,
(07:32):
so they had to figure out what they were going
to do, and it was a lot of new coaches
and new spots. Okay, what else is it doing. It's
a new quarterback, and so Trey Lance is getting all
the reps and Trey Lances our guy, Trey Lance gets
hurt in the first game. What do we do? Okay,
now we gotta get Jimmy g in there. Yes, there's
that sense of familiarity, but you know, it's still getting
(07:52):
Jimmy into this team with with this offense, everything has
changed a little bit. Okay, that goes for a few weeks.
Then what happens We get Christian McCaffrey. Okay, so now
things change again. Now we have the new quarterback that
seems to be getting a little bit. Now we have
a new weapon that's gonna become our primary weapon in
Christian McCaffrey. Okay, so all we're getting him, and what
happens Deebo Samuel gets hurt. All right, wait for Deebo
(08:14):
to come back after a couple of weeks. We're gonna
get things going way till we hit that stride, and
then a couple of weeks go by, what happens. Then
Jimmy Garoppolo gets hurt. Okay, now we're down to our
third string quarterback and now we're do and they have
they've had no time this year to get in the
groove and they're still winning like this they have had. Yes,
the defense has been the defense all season long, and
(08:34):
I get that, but offensively, you would expect there to
be some kind of bumps along the way. We're not scoring,
there's some kind of struggle. We're going through three quarterbacks,
and the fact that Purdy has come in and not
come into a to a well oiled machine on offense.
It's not like he's coming and suddenly, Okay, this is
how we've established things. This is how it's going to go.
McCaffrey is gonna be X, and Deebo Samuel's gonna be Why,
(08:57):
and George Kittle's gonna be Z and Brandon A Yuka
is gonna beat double whatever it is. He's come in
going okay, I gotta figure this out now, and I
gotta figure out my role and figure out how I
can add to it. And he's been able to do
that after they haven't had a lot of time altogether. Right, Like,
Mike White comes into this team because because look, you're
talking about two guys that were unheralded taking over teams.
Why I go with Mike White and and with and
(09:17):
and and and with Brock Purty and you know, because
Mike White's a jet and Mike White's come in where
everything is kind of okay, we have the same weapons
we've had all year long, right, Garrett Wilson and Corey
Davis and and Elijah more than Tyler Conklin. Okay, great, great,
he's come in with and all right, so he's come
into a situation where you know what you get where
the known quantities are and the Niners it's well, we're
(09:38):
still making Christian McCaffrey the number one guy, And how
do we keep Debo happy? And we gotta make there
how do we still get the ball to Brandon? I
you who's who was one of the best young receivers
in the NFL. How do we keep a top five
tight end George Kittle involved, like, and they've still had
to figure it out, and he still jumped in and
played this well even with the moving parts not settled.
That's another thing that tells me how legit brock Purty is.
(10:00):
I think the last point to make on this and
where we're at in the season, right, you got three
more regular season games to go. You got a home
date with Washington, a road game at Las Vegas on
New Year's Day. Uh, and then you've got a home
date with the Cardinals, whatever they are at that point,
(10:21):
the last, they'll still be the Cardinals. They're not gonna
move yet, They'll still be the Cardinal. Yeah. Well, I
mean they are hosting the Super Bowl at all. But
the last three weeks, you beat the Dolphins thirty three seventeen,
You beat the Buccaneers and throttled a top five defense
thirty seven. Tom Brady under duress, terrorized all day signing
(10:45):
autographs for defenders afterwards who are saying, yeah, I've watched
you since I was two. Okay, I don't know how
to take the like, give your Brady, how do you
take that? It's like, all right, I've had a hell
of a long run, and you know the excellence of execution,
or damn, I'm old. He just called me old by
without telling me I'm old. Uh. And then you beat
(11:06):
the Seahawks, who are still playoff viable now at five hundred,
in a hard fought game. Now, if that bogus roughing
the pastor call doesn't go down, yeah to pick six
and and this thing is out of hand and and
it really may have gone even further south instead you
walk away. Within you you have the game for your backers,
(11:30):
pretty as the two touchdown throws and the run that
we have to make sure we bring up the slide
where he extended the ball and got the first down
and that ended up being, you know, one of the
nails in the coffin there for the Seahawks. But the
point being playoff viable teams, it's not. He's not coming
in and beating up on on the bottom feeders of
(11:52):
the National Football League. Be sure to catch live editions
of The Jason Smith Show with Mike harmon weekdays at
ten pm easterns than pm Pacific, Fox Sports Radio, The
Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike har Shark
or something live from the ti iraq dot com studios.
(12:13):
We've had a lot tonight on Brock Purty, the forty Niners, Cowboys.
How about two other big stories that broke tonight spent
a couple of minutes on here. Number one is Carlos
wrote on the last great picture on the free agent market,
agrees to terms with the Yankees for six years and
a hundred and sixty two million dollars. This is something
(12:36):
where he's got to look back in his age and
have to say, my goodness, did we did we just
play this the best way we could. The Nikees were
so desperate for a star because they couldn't come out
of the off season saying, we just spent three sixty
million dollars, did you make a team better? Well know,
we brought one guy back from last year. Oh okay.
The Yankees were so desperate they had to add a
(12:58):
player for the locker room, for the team, for the fans,
for everything they had. They were under so much pressure.
They were so desperate to add another player so they
could say, well, now we spend five hundred million dollars
and and we have one new guy. Right. I love
the desperation the Yankees was so the sweat is dripping
off of priant catchment and they go and they get
road on a guy who look he's an All Star.
(13:20):
The last couple of years he's a good picture. And
and look they it's a good move together him because
he's a good picture. But wow, that's six two. He
used that Yankees desperation man and just jack that price up. No,
I mean it's brilliant though. I mean that's coming off
of NBC Sports Boston. He was at Fenway Park to
introduce Japanese outfielder Masataka Yoshida to the press and everybody
(13:47):
there red Sox uniform. Meanwhile he's on the phone finalizing
Rodan's deal to the eighties. How great is that? I mean,
that is the best. And like the last two years,
Rodan has been fantastic. It's the old if healthy dot
dot dot and as a lefty with the innings and
(14:07):
the numbers he's put up these last two seasons, I mean,
think about it. He played with the White Sox, he
made just under three million dollars and now I've got
a six year hundred sixty two after putting up a
two eight eight e r A with the Giants this year.
So now it's the how do you manage it? Make
sure the innings are there? Uh? In to your point, yeah,
(14:31):
you signed air and judge and now you that's great
if he does what he did last year, you're in
the same boat. But we we all know this, I
mean from a health standpoint, not not only for him,
but some of the other guys in the middle of
your lineup, banking on them to put up the numbers
and the game's played that they have on last year
(14:52):
and maybe going back another year. You know, you're you're
trying to manage that along and and certainly the rotation
needed needed a jolt in that division because the Orioles
aren't going away. If anything, they're getting better. The Blue
Jays are there for you. Oh and the Red Sox
who signed Japanese outfielder Masataka Yoshina. You know another Scott
(15:13):
bars in client right there. So, I mean, you get
a division that's gonna be a pain. So it's a
battle of arms literally. Uh. The other big story today
we find out Steph Curry is going to miss a
few weeks shoulder injury that he suffered last night trying
to make a steal. It's a subluxation of his left shoulder,
(15:37):
which is going to keep him out of action. Wild right. Now,
here's the thing. We can take a wide angle lens
on the Golden State Warriors right now who are struggling
to stay at five. They're young players. They expected to
take the next big step that they needed to take
the next big step to keep the dynasty going. They
have not panned out. And whether it's Pool or Wiseman Kaminga,
(15:57):
they're barely hanging on. And now that Steph is out
and there's nobody riding to the rescue. There's no big
free agents that are gonna come next year. There's no
big trade out there because who wants the young players
if they're underachieving There In five years, we're gonna look
back because now this is this is basically the beginning
of the end of the Warriors dynasty, Like this is
(16:18):
the year where okay, it's done. The players are too
old and they need something else to go on there.
We're gonna look back at this Warrior's winning the title
a few months ago in two in five years, we're
gonna say, man, how the hell did they squeak out
one last title? With all that great up and coming
young talent in the league. How the hell did the
Warriors win that they weren't any better than they were
(16:39):
the year before? How the hell did they win? Look
at all these guys were coming on left that year
in Moran and Tatum, and how the hell did they win?
And it's gonna be a head scratcher, like, man, they
squeaked out one more before the end of the dynasty happened. Well,
I think it's it'll be curious though, if he only
misses three four weeks, that's that's not a lot of
time in the length of an NBA season. I agree
(17:03):
with Steve Kerr if he can get on a decent
track and get back in the mix. Meanwhile, the young
guys have to pick up some minutes and perhaps up
their games. Yeah, they're interesting if they get into the
playoff grid because a lot of these teams ain't been there. Yeah,
but look, if he comes back, he's coming back to
a team that's wet five at best and probably not
a five hundred, but in the top ten. Man, he
(17:27):
needs to sit it out. The Lakers are winning it all. Well,
I mean, I couldn't have seen that coming at all.
No Frostburg feeling it tonight from way downtown justin Frostburg,
Twitter at out about a Fresca. Mike gets swollen down
the Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon, Yes,
(17:48):
holding onto that tent spot by a mere half game
over the Minnesota Timberwolves and only a game over the Lakers.
Here they come next. Brian you know is in for
Ben Maller for Mike. I'm Jason uh. This is Fox
Sports Radio. I love you, Brocco
