(00:45):
Tiract dot com the way tire buying should be. And
now let let me say this because big announcement here. Um,
the New York Mets have purchased Fox Sports Radio. I
don't know if you know this, but it's part of
a big spending spree. They also purchased hirerect dot com. Uh,
they have purchased me. I have a price. I also
(01:06):
sold all of you guys to them as well. Wait yeah, yeah, yeah,
so we're officially a losing organ. You are, We're all
we are, we are all Mets, we are all Mets. Well,
actually those are the purchases you just mentioned. Those don't
count actually against the luxury text. So I could see
him doing that. Actually, oh yeah, well it was. It
was a bit of a negotiation. And you know a
(01:28):
lot of your guys money kicks in down the road,
just so you know, it's kind of a kind of
a backloaded deal any party on the road, we mean
our guys. Well, because well because I gotta get paid first,
right because I mean, like I mean the Mets. Mets
called me and said, hey, we want to buy you
all you guys. All right, great, So I got all
the money. Now, the thing is, I don't get nearly
as much at the end. But that's when you guys
get all the money. And that's okay. When you have
(01:49):
no agent. This is what happened. Well, hey, you're getting
the money. It's just gonna be a little while. You're
just not gonna be around congratulated a while. What does
what does my contracts say to be paid upon death
to beneficiary. And why why does it say this right here?
I don't understand. It's two what is this mean? Just
for the record, the we're dealing in concretes here. There
(02:12):
is such a thing as the luxury text in Major
League Baseball. Right. So, even though reportedly the Carlos career
contract is being essentially assumed by the Mets since he's
not going to San Francisco, they were already getta pay
dearly luxury dollars, right, and doesn't matter and exactly and
it doesn't matter because the guy's worth billions and he
(02:34):
doesn't care. That's the best part when I say the Mets,
whatever we want, we will buy. It doesn't matter. You
can have an injured cheater, it doesn't matter. Whatever we will,
we will buy cheater. Okay, let me just say this
first things first, all right, because here here's the first thing.
Because I know Jason, Jason talk about the cheating scandal
all the time, the Astros. Yes, yes, yes, I I understand.
But I want to win, okay, And I don't care
(02:57):
who plays to borrow from Jim beheund I don't care
who plays. I love all my recruits, but I just
want to win. I don't care who plays. This is
where we differ. I don't care who plays. The Dodgers
need a short stop, unlike the Mets. Not my fault.
You didn't go after Carlos Correl my fault. I'm ecstatically happy.
I had already told people in the building that if
the Dodgers signed Correy, I was gonna boycott spring training
(03:19):
and then opening. That's a real man, right, sure. And
when Raphael Landistroy is hitting a buck seventy five in
the middle of the season, you're going, oh, we should
have really went after Carlos Correy. No, this is just
my point is I couldn't, in good conscience cheer for
him on my team. I cheer for whoever is it
(03:39):
bat and whoever is on the mountains weren't good enough
to be in the playoffs. Then they didn't cheat against you.
That I get. Yeah, I mean, I look, I feel
for the collective, and I say the collective we here.
I feel for everybody, the collective. We But guys, I
want to win. I mean I want to win. We
just got an unbelievably great because the Giant said, oh,
(04:02):
we're concerned about something in a medical from like fifteen
years ago, but we don't know. Yeah, we know he's
twenty eight and he's been a great player for a
long time. But we're concerned about something. Okay, great, thank you.
The only thing I'm met about, quite honest, and I'm
being truth. The only thing I'm at about is that
this happened about forty minutes after we got off the
air last night, because it was thank god, this deal
(04:23):
was broken by Steve Cohen and Scott Boris, who was
in Hawaii. So it's not thank god because now it's
four hours of it tonight we got Lakers. No, I
wouldn't you know what I would have done if that
happened and said, okay, listen, tell Ben mallor he can
have the night off. Okay, we're gonna talk. We're gonna
(04:44):
talk about nothing to say about Carlos Corocy would but
this is my this is my team. If the Dodgers,
it's something I would say, Hey, you take a couple
of extra hours from this show. We're fine, We're good.
You want to take it because you got the dot.
But this is I mean, we're buying everything now. I
mean we're buy whatever we want. We take and have that. Hey,
Jacob de Graham, how do you feel about that? Had
to field? We replaced you, We just started spending. What
(05:05):
what segments do we say bye to our affiliates? Spending spending, spending, spending, spending, fendings.
It's not my fault that the Mets are one of
the two biggest stories of the day, Steve, Do you
know how great it's gonna be when they don't even
make the playoffs with an eight hundred million dollars Now,
everybody makes the playoffs, everybody. We're gonna add. We're gonna
add teams to make sure the Mets studies were in
the World Series for praying out, Well, they're better than
(05:27):
the Mets. Well, listen, listen. The Mets are the new Yankees.
Yes they are. Okay, just follow me here. There's so
many big things to take away from the Mets getting
Carlos Korea right. The first thing is this, the Mets
have become public enemy number one in Major League Baseball.
They are the sports biggest villain. Now I don't care
(05:48):
because I love it. I got big shoulders. Bring it on.
It was the Yankees. They're the new Yankees because the
Yankees don't spend like the Mets. Do, and that breeds jealousy,
it breeds contempt, it breeds the fans that want them
to fail. All they think they can buy a championship.
You know that never plays well with the fans. Even
owners want them to fail. Well, this guy's worth even more.
The richest owners are saying, this guy puts me to shame.
(06:11):
I mean, he's worth like billions and billions more dollars
than I do, and he just doesn't care. He's outspending
even the richest owners. The Mets have become a story
every single night, and yeah, a lot of it's gonna
be boy, I want to see them fail. I want
to see this payroll explode. I want to see fights
in the clubhouse. I want to see Steve Cohen Matt,
I want to see Buck show Walter trying to tamp
(06:33):
everything down. This is unprecedented. There become the heatles of
Major League Baseball. And not only did they just sign
a star player, they signed a controversial star player. So
the Mets are now in the black hats for the
next ten years. But I don't care because it's much
better were in the sad sack hat, which is what
I wore for the majority last twenty years. Oh the Mets,
(06:53):
look at Jason the sad sack at Christmasdome. Now I
get to hear the black At going I'm coming for you.
I'm coming for you and you and you and you
and anything I want, I'm going to take you. I'm
like a bat, I'm like a bad guy to Old
West movie. Anything I want in this town I'm gonna take.
I'm gonna take the bank. I will take your wife.
I will take this, I will take your ranch. I
(07:14):
will suddenly I'm in Yellowstone, I'll take this. I'll take this,
I'll take that. That's a black hat now, yeah, black
at Mets. Yeah yeah, yeah. You know you started singing
there with the Peanuts reference. By the way, I know
Rob Parker just finished the show. Thanks for not going
full Rob Parker and going the whole song, because, as
I've said to Rob, why is it the people park
people that are able to sing the least want to
(07:35):
sing the most. That's never go full Rob Parker? So
what So what you're really doing is that was kind
of a pig pen reference. Like for the last twenty
years you've had this essentially cloud of dust, nothing good
following you around, and now this is finally your day
of glory. Because the man who's spending the money, Mets fan,
(07:57):
billionaire owner, is actually saying and correct me if this
wasn't the quote. This puts us over the top. Wow,
Why does anyone else even need to show up at
spring training? The thing is over? They don't Yes, we
don't need to play the games. Listen, and if something
happens and the Mets don't win the World Series, we'll
just buy our own trophy. We'll still have our own parade,
(08:18):
and we'll schedule games against teams we know we're gonna beat,
so we'll be able to do that. We're gonna play
the pirates. That's what it takes. That's what it takes us.
Can we throw off the first pitch? I am listen,
I am digging this. They have been Seriously, that's what's happened.
They have become the biggest villain in Major League Baseball.
(08:40):
Because Steve Cohen is easy to hate. I don't care
because I love the guy because he's a fan and
he's designed and that not. He's a fan of he
is a fan of winning. Well, because he's gone. No,
he's a good player, He's I'm sorry you had a
chance to sign I'm sorry, the Dodgers had the chance
to sign all these players in the off season, and
you started you we want that guy, get a garbage can.
(09:03):
Look at all the guys, Look at all the guys.
You could have had it. Instead, you got synder Guard.
Just think about that for a second. Him and his
seventy three fastball game. Synderguard is gonna throw against the Mets.
This here every every night in the show Glorious, Here
on all four, get back to reality here for a moment.
To get Carlos Correa, you would have to give him
a twelve year contract to age forty. No, thank you
(09:26):
heard out the cheating. No, no, no, no, listen, I
I understand. I am not the biggest fan of twelve
thirteen year deals to cheating. I'm a fan of winning cheating.
I'm a fan of winning. By I'm a fan of winning.
That's all that matters. Of cheating. Winning. No, what if
he's a reformed cheater, what if he's Hey, listen, you can.
(09:47):
I don't do that anymore. You can. No, no, no,
I don't do that anymore. I'm a met now, I
don't do that anymore. I've everybody deserves a second. Where
we are the land of second chance except Astros. Everybody
else does he give give him, give m a chance.
Maybe he maybe he never really did it. He just
wanted everybody to believe that he did it. Okay, that's
not true at all. Yeah, but listen, Well, like I said,
(10:09):
I I want to win, and he's a great player
and he can help us win. Right, it's it's I.
I really I don't care because if it would be
different if I was if I was if I was
the Dodgers for a second, say for a second, right,
if I was a Dodger, if I was another team
that every year routinely we won the Division, we made
the playoffs, we made the World Series, we won the
(10:29):
World Series. If I was a team like that, yeah,
I see where I could stand on my principles and say,
you know what, Yeah, Carlos Corea wouldn't work here because
of a lot of things we have going on in
the history. And I understand that. But when you're you're
saying that from the safety of the the the Tower
of Winds like the Dodgers have, because it's a hundred
story long foot long tower that stands for every win
(10:51):
they have during the season. I get it, but then
that's we don't win. We made the World Series seven
years ago and we blew it, right, that's it. That's
been the only highlight for the last one of years.
Now we have a chance to go and win the
whole thing. So yeah, I don't care who plays, I
really don't. I just want to win. I know there's
a line somewhere for me with players I would take
on my team and players I wouldn't. And the line
(11:13):
obviously is not here for Carlos Correa because I want
to win. W I it would be there for a
Yankee fan and not a Mets fan. I get that,
But can you just go ahead and name somebody where
the line does exist? In all your exuberance, can we
get back to reality. I still don't like Bryce Harper.
So Chris Harper had signed a twelve year contract with
(11:33):
the Mets, you would have a major problem digesting that.
It's tough to go from a guy I hated so
much to to you know, as a fan, to now
I gotta line through. It'd be tough, man, that'd be
it'd be difficult. No, you would have to get to
be serious for second you would have to get off
the field stuff to get me. Okay, this is this
is not a guy I want. There's something because certain
guys like that I woon't even pick up in fantasy,
(11:54):
you know. But if you gotta get all, you gotta
get off the field and and and be some Okay,
we get into uh the moral off the field issues,
and that's where guys, that's right. Cross this was cheap.
This was on this He got on the field, and
maybe he doesn't do it well. All right, the other
guys weren't on the field, but he was on the field.
There were guys in the stands, but he was on
(12:15):
the field. Maybe he's changed, Maybe he's changing. Give everybody
a second chance. Does that look like a man who
has changed? Steve, he has not asked for water apologize.
So I think we all agree with the whole second
chance this thing. It's very American, by the way, However,
I don't think it applies yet in this case. Not
for the Astros. Nope. You know this guy from the
Astros specifically, you know when Fox Sports Radio took a
(12:38):
chance on a young Steve to sayer, his history was
quite star crossed. Okay, not true, and he was here.
Things you were accused of that. I want people to
stop making stuff up. You were accused of stealing Vince
Scully's coffee in the press box on multiple occasions. Wow,
that was you, Steve. Steve just walking through. Hey, what's
(13:02):
that over there? Vince Scully looks it's craps its coffee.
It starts drinking it. It's great, right there, that's fantastic.
That's outstanding. Lots of things, lots of things. I know,
I know you were accused of of inflating Philip Rivers
statistics by ten yards every week that needed it. I mean,
(13:22):
Rivers has like ten thousand more yards passing because you're
you're adding you know, the ten onto every games. Well,
well I'm not going hey, hang on, hang on, hang on,
hang on. It is about ten by now though, Twitter,
and how about a fresca? Steve? I love you man,
like all those things you're you're accused. I mean, listen,
(13:44):
we gave you a chance here at Fox and things going,
what do you mean this guy was consulted on that?
I said, listen, we can't. I mean, now you're talking
like Arnie, like you wield power. And they said, hey, listen,
what do you think about Steve to say, you know,
he would steal Vince Scully's coffee all the time, but
you know what, Hey, let's give him a second chance, right,
I think we should give Steve a second chances. Didn't
(14:04):
happen and haven't apologized. Yeah, I mean also, and there's
and there's video of you I've seen leaving with farmer
John sausage tucked into your shirt. Torey Dodger Dogs every
seventh inning? Ay, I am paying. There's the Rod Parker
line was Scullies private farmer John reserve? Actually, I think
(14:29):
that line they just played that goes back to the
COREA versus Dodgers World Series took plant based off. Oh wow,
Steve de Sager's going to sports jail tonight, Sports jail
for Steve. Be sure to catch live editions of The
Jason Smith Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern,
seven pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I
(14:51):
Heart Radio whipp We actually have baseball trade news coming
in as the Mets and Steve Cohen I've done it,
aga En. Maybe much more difficult than obtaining Carlos Correa.
They're able to trade away James McCann, James mccaniccording to
Jeff Passes of ESPN, headed to the Baltimore Orioles for
(15:16):
a player to be named later. A good haul in return. Well,
this was will you pay him so we don't have to? Yes?
Or maybe they're paying part of the and this is news. Yes,
it's news because because this pays for one month of
Carlos Correa. This is a national The twelve million dollars
pays for one month of Carlos Correa. So that's good.
(15:36):
The Mets. So at a baseball standpoint, Mr Matt instead
of James McCann batting, they can bring up the minor
league catchers. He can bat one ninety five. Yeah, yeah,
the number one prospect in all of baseball. Yeah, we
can bring him up in him maybe not ready in
batting one night, but it doesn't matter. We were We
had to. We had we had to be able to
get some breathing room to be able to make it
work financially. Now Carlos Correa can play at least in April.
(15:59):
A couple of more trades have to happen to get
him from May ju July at all. It was a concern. Yeah,
twelve million dollars a year for James m the next year.
This wasn't the end of his contract. No, this is
astounding No, no, no, that's a bad deal that Mets
got out of. Just everything is coming up, Mets man,
who's gonna get out? We get out of this deal? Yeah, no, no,
we'll just train him for we don't want anything. Re course,
of course, who signed him originally? It was the Mets
(16:21):
gave him that money. It's not like the Mets assume
that contract originally. Yeah, but but that's all right now
Now Korea is actually good now for spring training and April,
so that that's what the twelve million dollars is bought us. Right,
he could get an advance on the salary if he
needs it, maybe get an apartment now, Oh, I don't know.
He's like, he does have enough money to buy a
(16:42):
house in New York City? You kidding, because you gotta
make more money than that the houses in New York.
If you think, if you think real estate in Los
Angeles is insane, right, and in the cities and which
which it is insane in in l A, Chicago, the
big cities, it is just every time I look at
New York and I see so and so who's a
big star, right, like like some big media mogul selling
(17:05):
their penthouse apartment. It's a three and three with a
bonus room. Right, it's a three bedroom, three bathroom, bonus
roomy square feet and it's sold for sixteen million dollars.
Like what you're hitting me for three and three were
square feet? It's sixteen million dollars. Have a moat or something? No?
(17:28):
No, no no, what floor is it on? Oh it's on
the thirtieth floor. Is there an elevator? Yeah? Some days,
some days there is, some days there isn't. It's good
luck bringing up that piano. I mean, it's it's it's that.
It's That's what I don't understand so much about people. Yeah, Yeah,
I got this great penthouse apartment in New York. Yeah,
And and what you did? Well, if I want to
go somewhere, I gotta I gotta get dressed, and I
gotta get on the elevator, go down thirty floors, and
(17:49):
I gotta go out. I can't park anywhere now, I
gotta walk to the garage where the car is parked,
and I gotta get it there, and I gotta pull
Remember the old Odd Couple episode with a one a
car on local radio at the beginning of the episode,
all that robbing cher as well. They want a new car,
but they live in New York, so they had to
spend the whole rest of the episode trying to park
(18:11):
it and getting up earlier in the morning. And it
was ridiculous. It is. It was so true to life.
It was hilarious, you know, I don't know, I kind
of like Rob Parker and Chris Brussard buying a car
and then arguing over who got to drive it. They
would just put the drivers and just put the wheel
on my side when I'm driving, and to go on
your side when you're driving. That's all. We'll take it
(18:31):
out and put it on. That's all we're doing. I
mean that he would bet wings on who could part better. Hey,
you're talking to a guy who nailed the parallel park
on the first try and thus pass my road test
in New York on the first try. Really, like for
in high school or getting new life. You know, this
is one of the great moments of my life. I
(18:52):
mean seriously, because I was a horrendous driver. It took
me a long time to really learn how to drive well,
so when you go through driver's head, like there's like
three or four people in your car. I was easily
the worst driver in my car all my friends. I
was the worst driver. I was, I was, I was,
I just wasn't good. The instructor was in the front
and they could put on the brakes also on their
side of the he he used his side of the
brakes quite quite a lot when I was driving, and
(19:14):
it came. But the big but the rule in New
York is, I don't know other places where it is,
is that if you failed to parallel park on the
first try, you automatically fail the road test. You automatically fail.
It's it's it's it's okay, we'll pull pull him back in.
You know, good luck. You know, schedule you road test
again next time. No no, no, So I'm going and
all my friends and I go, I'm just gonna fail.
(19:37):
I'm just gonna fause I'm never gonna I'm never gonna
get this on the first try. And I was one
of the last people in my grade to actually go
for my road test because my birthday I was I
was one of the youngest ones in the class. And
all my friends went and they all failed. No, I
missed the parallel park. Oh I hit the curb. I
did this. I'm like, oh my god, I'm never gonna pass.
I'm never gonna do it. So my uncle brings me
and I'm like, okay, I'm gonna go. This is gonna be.
(19:58):
I'm just gonna found it. I'm gonna I'm gonna fail.
So I'm doing positive. Yeah, I'm doing the road test.
Everything is fine, you know, all right? He goes, all right,
no pull over here in parallel park. And I'm like, okay,
I'm like, I got a pretty decent uh room here
to parallel park, all right, let me see. So I
do it and I nail it, and I go I
just stopped, and I go, oh my god, I just
nailed the parallel park. It's great. The guy says, very nice,
and I want you to make a broken you turn.
(20:19):
U I said, okay, great, So I pulled out to
go down the road to make a broken you turn.
He stopped the car. Stop the car. I stopped, you guys,
what are you doing? And I said, you said a
broken you turn? I go, yeah, from where we were,
why didn't you pull out into what did you pulling?
On the road. You just nailed the parallel park. Do
you want to fail the road test because you didn't
listen to me? And I go, no, sir, I really
thought I'll do I'll do the K turn right now.
I did the K turn. I came back. He said
(20:41):
all right, hey, nice job, and I walked out and
it was like I was I was like in the
air walking back to my uncle, going I'll go my past.
I went into school the next day and it was
like I walked with my middle fingers up, all my
friends going, I passed. You all make fun of me.
And I passed my road test and nobody thought I did.
So a shot king so it would be like, you know,
(21:01):
the Mets winning the World Series, Yes, it was. It
was that shocking. Yes, it was the eighties when we
were good. So it was the eighties. But none of
my friends, yeah you know, oh what we did win
one playoff game against the Padres yet but they no
one believed me. They're like, you know, you, you're just lying,
and they thought it was lying for like yes, and
I had to bring it in. I finally brought what
(21:23):
I had to do was it took me a couple
of weeks ago. Yeah, you're gonna get the slip and
showing you past you have your permit. So I had
to wait till I actually got my permit until and
I had to wait however many weeks it was for
them to say, it's probably like two or three weeks.
Uh me, it was a month until I got it
brought in. I go here blank, you blank, you blank.
That's when it comes from on the show. Oh yeah, man,
I was so excited about that. Everybody else is a
(21:43):
better driver, and I got my life's just a taper
quarter of you that where they gets played it was
it was so exciting. You were ahead of your time
at photoshop. I was, And you know, and I don't
talk to anybody from high school anymore. I wonder if
there's a course the chase the Smith Show is Steve
to say I mentioned, is you talk Mets and James
McCanns somehow being able to be traded. I do want
(22:04):
to hear the details of that whenever they come out.
Or maybe he'll fail his maybe maybe he'll still be
with the Mets through stop. It's only twelve million, the
next year's twelve million. It's pocket change. It's pocket change
for well, I mean, if the Padres can do that, right,
we want to get rid of this contract so much,
(22:26):
we'll just pay most of the contract. Can you take him? Please?
But the Great Giants. Writer Andrew Baggerley for The Athletic
mentioned that he's in the Bay Area, that the Giants
press conference has been postponed. That was the only sentence
from the Tuesday morning email, and that the Giants flagship
radio station had a complete lineup of players and executives
(22:48):
from the team already book that it was supposed to
be a whole day, and then the ceremonies, no interviews,
no ceremony, no callbacks to people saying what's up? We
had this gay scheduled. It was a complete disaster on Tuesday.
And then now we get late last night the news
that yeah he's he's officially non So wait a second,
(23:09):
those hosts, those hosts had to talk yeah, yeah, yeah,
So you know what they did. Instead, let's do our
bag on this shortstop. Who is gonna be our savior? No, no, no,
it was gonna be let's switch. What are we gonna
do instead, We're gonna do it's a bad contract anyway.
Are the Warriors done? And how great is brock Purty. Okay, great?
And here's the phone number eight seven seven on brock
(23:30):
that's number. How great is brock purtyes brock Purty better
than Tom Brady already? You know, the host couldn't pick
up the Warriors and say, because what are the Warriors
gonna win on the road? No, this is a question
already answered. Look what the Warriors were on the road tonight?
There they were down forty two to fourteen. Later in
the first quarter at Brooklyn tonight, we got everybody else
(23:51):
that what happen? Well, there's no player? What? Yeah, there's
no player. Did he walk in and say I resigned
as s S of the s A s f G
like Belichick didto the Jets? Is that how it walked out?
Then he had the press conference though right it was
the next day Belichick said, you know that whole coaching
for the Jets, I'm just I'm not that's it. You know, really,
(24:11):
I really can't wait to find out just exactly what
it was for the Giants because the quote disagreement over
the medical Yeah, because the medical court. You know, if
you're believing Scott Boris, and all he said was it
was something from the medical like twelve or fifteen years ago.
And if that's the case, and you're like, okay, you're
worried about something medical from twelve years, obviously that's the disagreement.
(24:32):
They applies now the Giant, Right, how does it apply
when the guys now and he's played great for so long?
I'm pretty sure whatever medical issue he applies because it
would have been a thirteen year contract, right, you'd like
to get thirteen years of baseball out of that? Yes, exactly,
and all maybe at the end, but you do do
the Mets really think you're gonna get baseball at the
end of the contract from core? I mean, seriously, it's
(24:53):
different group. You really think the last five years? Who
knows what baseball is gonna be in seven years? What
the what the sal reads are gonna be. Like, everybody's
going into that the same way, thinking the next five
or seven years is what we're going to worry about,
and then the last five after that we'll figure it out. Right,
we can pay people off, who knows where it's going
to be. The finance of the game is growing. You're
looking at money you're gonna be making over the course
(25:15):
and projections that's what. That's how everybody is proceeding with
it is. Okay, Yeah, let's deal with reality is the
next five to seven years. So for Korea it's from
till least thirty five. Then the last five years. All right,
we'll figure it out, right, we'll figure out what the
last five years. Maybe they all won't be bad, maybe
we'll move on, maybe we'll buy them out, who knows,
who knows what we're gonna do. But that that's how
everybody is proceeding. So I can't believe the giants are
(25:36):
suddenly Oh, we're worried about the medical thing, which is
why I'm telling you if it came down to it,
if you said to me, what was it right now?
It's they got cold feet. They got cold feet about
giving them a contract, and they were concerned well with
they had already really want to do it. Brandon Crawford,
you gotta learn another position. No stuff. Hey, Brandon, I
got good news and bad news for you. What's that? Well,
(25:56):
the bad news is we're not as good as we were. Okay,
what's a good news? You're still as your stop and
now they're bringing Buster Posey back. No, you don't be great?
Is if they they tell them, okay, you're the shortstop again,
and tomorrow they signed Dansby Swanson. Hey, sorry about that,
but we remember we told you Korea and now okay, yeah,
now we're signing Dansby Swanson. Sorry about that. The difference
with the Giants owner megabucks and say the Clippers owner megabucks,
(26:20):
I think, correct me for a wrong. The Clippers owner
Steve Ballmer has the most money of any American sports owner. Uh,
Steve Cohen has more money, has the most money. He's
the richest owner of sports. Okay, because the Bomber's what
fifty billion, It's just ridiculous amounts of money. And he,
I mean, he paid two billion for the Clippers, and
we could just stop the conversation right there. That proves
(26:42):
it two billion back then for the Clippers. Okay, But
the difference is he bought into a salary cap league,
the NBA, and he needed to build his own arena.
They're they're just renters in downtown l A, where the
Lakers play, and he is next to the Ram Stadium
building his own arena, and the Clippers were gonna there
in a couple of years. Mets don't need a new stadium.
(27:02):
They have one, and they're not at a salary cap league,
and they have an owner who doesn't care about the
luxury even though the luxury tax gets quote prohibitive, right,
it gets punitive when your repeat offenders like the Dodgers
don't want to be It really goes up. When you
go massively over the luxury tech like the Mets are
this postseason, it really charges you more. They don't care, no,
(27:25):
And I look just here, Steve Cohen just bought the Clippers,
so that just had just happened while you just happened
right here. Be sure to catch live editions of The
Jason Smith Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern,
seven pm Pacific. We have a payout update coming your
way right now, and it's more like a non payout up.
All right, Well, everybody caught up on this. We've talked
(27:47):
about this for the past three weeks. We ran a
big time World cup pool here at Fox Sports Radio.
Why are you there is no big time pool with
eight people in it. I pulled all the name, but
it's all people. Everybody knows it's the US on the air.
It's all you guys, um and it was one by
Justin Frostberg. He had Argentina. Argentina won the championship and
(28:09):
Alex tie Shirt came in second because he had Morocco
and rock him. So tie shirt is owed. I think
about seven fifty bucks and Frostberg gets a grand and
Steve de Seger is the guy. If these kind of
dollars were involved, I wouldn't have been involved. He would
have taken the money and left where five dollar entry.
(28:31):
I'm in kind did take the money and leave. I
haven't seemed to say here in a while. So de
Sega ran the pool. We pulled the names out of
the hat. We've talked about this for the past few weeks.
Harmon hat yes, and this is yes. And someone else
can put their hand in Harmon's hat next time when
we do it for the women's your hands still there.
I had, I had, I washed it. It's okay. Uh No,
I didn't do that. I I stuck it right in
(28:52):
the whole thing, a pure right in the purell, and
I pulled it out. Then I stuck it in some
lie and they took it out of that and then
put it back in the to say, this is the
first night Steve is working since the end of the
World Cup, where both Frostburg and Alex Tisher are here,
the first and second place winners who are getting paid.
We're all big, one, big happy family now once again. Right,
so now you have an update on the pit because
(29:14):
as of last hour, the sager didn't have the money
for you guys get paid right? Oh? Okay, wait, so
what's happened now? Had the money I prioritize the show
over actually redoing you know what I think I just
told you. Okay, so what's the Definitely the payout, it's
more important. So, so what's the update. What's happened? Second
(29:34):
place got paid, the first place is not gotten, and
third place I'm third place? Oh your third place to Steve? Okay,
so ty Shirt, so you paid tyshir tonight I had France.
Does Frostberg have a medical he's got you gotta pass
his medical and then he gets his money? Is that
what happened that giants aren't gonna get I'm sorry, giants,
doctors are actually going to perform your medical. Frostberg, You're screwed, man,
(29:54):
You're not getting that money. So so so Tish gap isn'tough?
Frostberg gets paid? Tomorrow. Yeah, are in a couple of weeks? Okay,
Oh you got You have to get paid from Fox
Sports Radio again to have the money to pay Frostburg. No,
it's just that it took a couple of weeks to
get the pay in, so it would be appropriate if
that's what it took to get the pay out. So
you're not nearly as liquid as Steve Cohen, then, like
(30:15):
you took that money, it's somewhere and you have to
get it at be able to pay Frost looks like
everybody else in this building. I'm not a liquid and
Steve Cohen I got all kinds of money. Be sure
to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with
Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app.
(30:36):
Joining us now on the Hotline MLB Network, Fox Sports
Radio Baseball Insider. You can follow him on Twitter at
John Morrossi. It is John Paul Morossi and JP. I
do have a new bit of news for you here.
You might want to sit down. Um, I've just gotten
the news. Steve Cohen has bought your house. The hospital
(30:56):
your wife is a doctor at in fact, he's bought
most of the hospitals in the state of Michigan. Uh.
So now you are now working for Steve Cohen. Love it,
uh and good evening. I actually thought, Jason, I'm not
sure how much longer we can go on this threat
of conversation because it was my understanding that I was
brought on as the local Michigan based expert to discuss
(31:20):
the Lions victory over the Jets on something. Why understanding
was that's what we are going to talk about it.
And my mistaken there. Okay, we can talk about that
if you can tell me two players right now who
play for the Lions. Uh, Jared Goff. Okay, I knew
you'd get Jared Goff. Give me, and that's that's all
(31:42):
I got. Jared Goff. I would have accepted Billy Sims.
I would have accepted Eric Hippell. I would have accepted
Calvin Johnson. I would have accepted Herman Moore. Those are
all accept So Steve, Steve may be familiar with this,
but uh I am. I am the person in America
who knows the least about the NFL. I was I
was at I was at my kids elementary school. The
(32:04):
other day picking up my daughters from school, and the
dad's naturally start asking me what I think about the Lions,
And I said, to be honest with you guys, and
I pointed to the entire playground. I said, everybody here,
including the kids, knows one about the Lions. But he
makes up for it with his college hockey knowledge. Hockey
(32:24):
I can talk all day. World Cup I love. I
can talk about that all day. Uh. And of course
the NHL World Juniors love it. Major League Baseball, of
course that's my jam. But the NFL I have got nothing.
Just I'm an absolute zero. But that that makes it
even better that I'm asking people around town, Hey, the
Lions are apparently good again, And they said, yeah, what
(32:46):
do they think that they're going into the reasons and
Dan Campbell and the defensive set up and and field
goal kicking specialty has been good. I said, yep, Um,
I couldn't tell you anything but the fact that they
beat the Jets, and so I get a chance to
manage mention it to my good by Jason Smith. That's
the whole point. Yeah, hey, the Lions are good. You
know who else is really good? You brought it back
(33:08):
around to the to the principal reason here. Um, I'll
say this, Uh, Steve Cole is great for baseball. And
I know there there are probably some divergent opinions about
that subject right now, uh, such as maybe the twenty
nine other teams in Major League Baseball. But but he is.
He is singlehandedly bringing the sport forward from a standpoint
(33:31):
of investing in his roster competing. This is remember, the
one sport in our country that does not have a
salary cap and and it is the one sport therefore,
that that a very motivated, very wealthy owner can make
the greatest difference. And I think that for a sport
(33:52):
that has perhaps at times moved in the direction of
group think about very highly analytical valuations of players and listen,
there's there are plenty of objective reasons for for doing that.
And you look at the success of the Rays and
the Guardians. I get that, But darn ittt this is
(34:12):
a capitalistic sports, competitive enterprise. And there is something old
fashioned and awesome when a billionaire owner wakes up or
in this case last night, stays up and says, you
know what I want that player, and I'll pay a
quarter of a billion dollars to get them. I don't
care what anybody else thinks. I want to win the
World Series with the most superstars that I can and
(34:35):
let's go out there and get Carlos Correa. And I
love that. I'm sorry, I love it. I think it's great.
It's great for the game, it's exciting. Are are there
going to be owners that don't love it? Sure? But
this is competition. That's why we love sports. It's the
it's the competitive aspect of it. And I can't get
enough of what Steve Cohen's bringing to the sport right now.
(34:56):
Nobody is doubting the talent of Carlos Corea's that you're
all drafted number one overall a decade ago and has
been in a ton of playoff games. Is there any
negatives to this signing? Moving positions you see a fit?
Is this going to work out from day one? Well?
And that's a great question, Steve. A couple of things there,
I mean, obviously, first and foremost, there is the medical question.
(35:18):
Was this a was this something that the Giants specific
standard on the physical was was the one that was
in play? Is this a broader question of his health?
I think we'll find out with with the Mets medical review.
And again, every every medical review, every quote unquote physical
(35:40):
is different because every doctor is different, every every opinion
of every orthopedist. While obviously it's a very objective profession,
it's not necessarily uniformally so, and so there are going
to be some variances. And the Giants in recent years
have been known as one of the more stringent teams
on medicals as the Orioles were in previous years. And
(36:01):
so I think that there's a really good chance that
Carlos is going to stay healthy and have a great
career in New York. He is someone who has sought
the big market in the bright lights, and once, I
think especially once he saw his successor in in Houston,
Jeremy Painia become the toast of the town, Carlos basically said,
(36:23):
I want to go to the biggest, brightest place I
can go and be the dude and and win a
championship and and stamp my status as one of the
five greatest stars in the game. I think San Francisco
would have been a great place for him to do it. Obviously,
it didn't work out, and as soon as his representation
was given word that that the medical review went against them.
(36:46):
That was one of the great pivots I have seen
in the history of sports or any negotiation anywhere. To
land on his feet with a double triples almost somersault
in the middle of the air and and uh and
and land with a perfect landing, which is exactly what
he did. So I realized the switching positions. He's a
good friend of Francisco Lindoor. They'll be teammates in the
spring with with the Puerto Rican national team. I think
(37:09):
it's gonna work out just fine. I think Carlos realizes
that that's where he had to go to get that
combination of money and bright lights and and he's a
pretty smooth guy, and I think he's going to know
exactly what to say and how to handle things when
he shows up the spring training. All right, now, help
us out here, JP, because we haven't gotten a lot
of information on just how this fell through with the Giants. Obviously,
(37:30):
the Giant saw something on his medical that they didn't like,
and it's kind of a head scratcher because the guy
has been healthy for eight years, he's a great player.
What could they possibly have seen? Why was there so
much time in between when they agreed on the deal
and the doctors. That's something Scott Boris talked about today.
Try to take us inside that what you're hearing about
how this fell through with the Giants. Sure, I think
(37:53):
that a couple of things he um. First of all,
it's not terribly uncommon for there to be a bit
of a lag between the the agreement and the actual announcement.
Usually that is to review the medical records. There was
time obviously between Justin Verlander's agreement. He was just announced
a couple of days ago, Aaron Judge yesterday, so this
(38:13):
is not unexpected that there would be some time in between. Um.
I think that my understanding what I was told today
by a source close to the negotiations was that there
was an issue with a foot injury that he had
sustained in the minor leagues. That they that that the
Giants doctors believe there was some concern about about that
(38:35):
injury and what it could portend for the future. Now,
part of this conversation is, of course the insurance angle.
Because a contract with this magnitude is typically insured, there
are at times exclusions from insurance policies where if if
an underwriter looks at the underlying information is as well,
(38:56):
we've got a knee that was troublesome theoretically and a
different case or an ankle or an elbow, that they
can sometimes exclude that from the policy. That has happened.
I think honestly, Jason once, once the Giants came back
and said, we've got some concerns. We can't go forward
with the deal on these terms. I think that that
(39:17):
Scott Boris and Carlos Carea said, wait a minute. The
Mets got involved late, Steve Cohen will spend anything to
bring in any superstar before we do anything else. My
next phone call is Steve Cohen. And once once Cohen
was engaged, I think the Giants missed the opportunity. Sometimes,
if if you've got if IF a team, for example,
(39:39):
if the Giants thought he had no other choice out there,
and and they wanted to play hardball and say, listen,
we don't think that that you're worth X. We we
think we could we have to drop the offer by
a hundred million dollars whatever it isn't just saying that,
you know, just to give you a number. Then then
if they felt like they were in a favorable negotiating position,
then yeah, sure, go ahead and try that. But if
(40:00):
that was if their intention was to raise a fairly
technical issue and try to save tens of millions of
dollars in the process because they felt like Kara didn't
have another good option, they badly misread the market. Because
again Cohen was out there. Everybody knew that he was interested.
He said it on the record like four days ago.
(40:20):
So I just think it's it's a case of Scott
Boris knowing what to do, knowing who to call. He
had just negotiated the Brandon Nemo deal with Steve Cohen
several days prior. So I think everybody has to realize
now that if you've got a superstar out there, that
your job as an agent on day one is to
(40:40):
call Steve Cohen. That's your job, because either he's going
to sign him or his presence is going to bid
up the price. I mean this, The ramifications of not
just this deal, but what Steve Cohen has done all
winter are going to be felt for years, and they're
going to be very expensive because now he's the looming
(41:02):
specter of oh, well, you never know, we can we
can call Steve Cohen just just just in case if
you don't your offer right now. This could be about
a starting pitcher in five years. But as long as
Steve Cohen's owning the New York Mets, then really a
lot of GM's and a lot of owners are not
going to be able to fully sleep sleep soundly whenever
(41:22):
they're in the midst of a negotiation, because every agent
in the sport now knows exactly what they're supposed to do.
So is it too early for you to start thinking
about predictions for next year? And would you say, oh,
Mets are not only going to win the n at
least they're gonna win it by double digits. They're gonna
win a d ten games or more, that type of thing.
I thought you were gonna ask you if I think
(41:42):
they're gonna get Otani as well next Oh yeah, they will, wait, which,
by the way, I don't. I don't think they will.
I think it's gonna be a Dodger, but we'll we'll
revisit that in November. Um, Steve Cohen may buy the Dodgers.
By then he could Dodgers. It's it's like like one
of those systems in European soccer where you see sometimes
(42:03):
owners having multiple holdings there. So, but I'll say this,
I I believe that the Mets are the most talented team.
I think Verlander is a more durable picture than de Gram.
I do believe they'll win the National League East. I
don't think that's a that's obviously not exactly a risky
(42:24):
prediction at this point. That the Phillies are still really good. Um,
the Braves are still really good. I just think that collectively,
including the retain retention of Edwin Diaz and other moves
they've made, they just have the most depth right now.
And they're even in a situation I saw report tonight
that they could trade James McCann. Carl Carrasco's name has
(42:45):
been out there for a while as a possible trade candidate.
So they've got so much depth right now, guys, that
they are in a really good spot. They've got an
excellent manager in Buck show Walter, So um, I'd be
hard pressed, I'll put it this way, I'd be hard
pressed to pick someone else to win the National League
East right now, after seeing all the mess of achieved
I'll run in this offseason. Hey, look, let's look arout
(43:06):
and get dancey swats and will play second base. I mean,
we'll just keep moving guys around. Get on the phone.
I mean it really there is, guys. There is nothing
that we can put past Steve Cohen at this stage,
which is a fairly remarkable thing to say. I look,
I'm sorry. JP. Now he actually owns the state of Michigan,
(43:27):
so your entire state. He's buying this stock at a
at a high water mark. The Lions. The Lions look unbeatable.
Michigan is gonna play in the national semifinal. Michigan's women's
basketball team a huge win over North Carolina. Guys, this
is this is a time to be in Michigan. I think, oh,
this is I'm telling you. My wife is she is
over the moon with how well Michigan is playing. And
(43:49):
she's she's nervous about the TCU game, but she's excited.
She's cursing a lot more the last few days, so
I can tell she's ready for the semifinal game. I
love it very good. We'll tell her what we send
our best wishes and and and we can't wait as
well for this. We're honestly, what a what a great
time here for sports. We've already now crowned the Mets
of the World Series champions before the college football season
(44:10):
is even done. You can follow on Twitter at John Morrossi.
That is at John Morrossi, MLB Network, Fox Sports Radio
Insider JP. Happy holidays. We'll talk to you soon, unless
when the Mets get Aaron Judge later on tonight. We'll
call you back. Call me back. I'll be awake my
friends anytime. Okay, Happy holidays, guys. I always love catching
up and see you buddy.
