Show with Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio. UH Locked
and Loaded, refreshed, Ready to go. Here on a beautiful
Tuesday evening. Happy holiday, holiday, holiday wherever you are, whatever
you celebrate, whoever you're celebrating with, Thank you for making
us part of the extended family, even if it's just

(00:44):
a means by which to avoid your family. At this
point in the holiday season, we've got rained here in California.
I know a lot made on the travel plans wherever
you're going, Be kind, be patient, and recognize that sometimes
the system just don't work. And it's a holiday, So
bring a book or download the I Heart Radio app
and take us wherever you're going. Mike Harman, alongside Chris

(01:07):
Plank notes Smith this week. He is out taking his holidays. Um,
probably with thinking about the Jets and how many permutations
they still have left by which to get into the playoffs.
But Mr Plank, what's going on? How are you? I'm good, Mike,
Hope you and your family had a great holiday. It
was busy with shows. Arnie and I had had it

(01:28):
last night here on Fox Sports Radio at her Sunday
night show. I've been thrown off. I've been thrown off
all this early week because Christmas being on a Sunday,
while seemingly fitting right, um, it's it's kincked on me off.
I'm used to everyone having a couple of days off,
like Christmas on a Tuesday or a Wednesday, and getting
a few extra days off. So I'll I'll constantly feel

(01:51):
like today is tomorrow, uh, and that I don't know Thursday,
it's actually Thursday tomorrow or something. But I'll pump to
be here. It's been a week already, and I know
we've got a boatload of stuff to give get to
because my Carmen, the sports content gods have given us
tons to talk about. And it's not just to say

(02:11):
in the world of the NFL, but I can't believe
you didn't have on our rundown the excitement of a
watching the ticketmaster Burne Hamble during this program. And then
late tonight college football on a baseball field Oklahoma State
and Wisconsin UH, two teams whose quarterbacks are in the
portal and no longer with them. Cut gotta go with

(02:32):
these college football bull games that nobody cares about. Well,
if I had money on them, But seeing as I'm
still in California, one of the last bastions of UH,
inability to do that, I guess I could drive to
and May and make some wagers that way, as we've
seen guys go and collect tickets by driving to the
to the borders of different states across this great nation.

(02:55):
But certainly the college football slate will be on aras
watching a little bit of Ailers because I love me
some left handed quarterback action. Being a south Paw myself,
I I celebrate all of them as unique and rare
as they are. And certainly I know you and Arnie
talked a lot of on air therapy about two A
tongue of Iloa will get into him as one of

(03:16):
those left handed quarterbacks. A little bit later on in
the show, as we come to you alive from the
tire Act dot Com Studios. Uh, it's Mike Rman Chris
Plank with you here at Plank Show at Swollen Dome
where you find us, So thanks for being with us here.
We've got Prefect, We've got Milanio, and we've got Frostburg
to make a sound oh so pretty and keep us

(03:37):
all informed of everything. But yeah, bowl game season does
it doesn't have the same feel like ever since we
initiated the playoffs. It just doesn't have the same juice
and And I know you're a college football guy through
and through, and then you you deal with the Raiders
as you have to, but we talk about the the

(03:57):
college football bowl season. I just don't have the same
revelry and and being fired up for now. My Northwestern
team stunk this year, and they stunk last year, so
any ideas of a bowl game were vanquished very quickly.
So I guess that's part of it. But Chris, it
just doesn't feel like it has the same weight it

(04:17):
once did. Oh, it's not in the clothes. You're trying
to tell me that you're not fired up for me
jumping on a plane tomorrow morning to travel to Orlando
for the cheese at ball. Come on, since the excitement
right now of Oklahoma and Florida stayed permeating through the
tire rack dot Com studio. No, it's it's it's not
what it once was. And it's it's even kind of

(04:38):
sad that, you know, when I was a kid. I'm
I'm an old man now, but when I was a kid,
January first really meant something. And not sitting here trying
to wax nostalgically about the Rose Bowl, but just in
Jimer but came on January one. Yeah, it was such
a a grand event, right, the granddaddy of them all,
and you tuned in wherever you were. For us, I

(04:59):
mean I was a Midwest kid growing up in Chicago,
So that meant what about a three thirty pre game
and then a little later was the kickoff and away
we went, and we had fun and we liked it.
And it's for each school it still has its juice,
right And for folks that bemown the expansion of the playoffs,
it's not going to negate the rivalry and the ferocity

(05:24):
of you know, Washington, Washington State to use them as
an example, but and and go on and pick whoever
your rival is for whatever college you root for, but
from a national perspective, it certainly changes. And we talked
about it a lot. With the Heisman Trophy, it kind
of knew who was winning for several weeks, so it
was an afterthought and it didn't have the same pomp

(05:45):
and circumstance at once did. Now it became an argument
of should this guy have been invited just to stand
there on a stage? Right that that was the biggest debate.
How many guys should get to go? Yeah, which it
has all of juice for about three and a half minutes. Yeah,
but I'll tell you what you know there there there
is not a place for the massive number of games

(06:05):
that we have. And I understand on the night whenever
we have so many great NFL topics to get to
that UH coastal getting rolled by East Carolina and Oklahoma
State in Wisconsin in the UH they're playing in the
Guaranteed Rate Bowl and it's they're the sponsor of the
the White Sox facility. Right, I got a lot of

(06:26):
merch from the giveaways that has guaranteed rate on this
you can fit in tonight in the for Oklahoma State
in Wisconsin. Don't know what that crowd's gonna look like
because nobody can travel anywhere. But uh, I understand that
it's not gonna be top billing and probably will only
be brought up in uh Monse's updates and and a
few things here there. But it's just too much, you know,
it's too much. But with gambling, I'm sure that it's

(06:48):
kind of juiced up a few things. I'll be excited
when they kick off this game tomorrow night, but of
these bowls are completely and totally irrelevant to not just
this season, but to next year and the one that matter. Well,
we get going on Saturday with a four team playoffs,
so get us expansion. Let's kind of start moving down
the road to see what that's gonna look like. And

(07:08):
by god, nothing has been more painful than seeing some
of the weather situations these Bulls have had to deal with.
So I'll be watching. I know you guys don't care,
but give me some Jim Leonard versus Mike Gundy tonight
out in Arizona. Let's go. Well, I'm all for it.
I'll watch it, I'll consume it. I'm here in the
tire Act dot Com studios, here with all our team

(07:29):
and we've got all our monitors rolling up, so we've
got NBA action, We've got uh, the College Bowl game
that's currently going on right, We've got our East Carolina
one burial that's going on here, so you know, we
celebrate them all. And you go into Orlando. It's it's
cold there too, cold being a relative term of course,

(07:50):
when it's I just got away from negative fifteen, I know,
but but my my point is like down there, they're
losing it right put folks are in clear water. I
was in Orlando for a couple of days last week
where it was still pretty nice and until the normal
rain storms that you get this time of year for
an hour or two, and I got, I know, boo hoo,

(08:11):
I'm not I'm not saying anything. And fortunately the travel
God smiled on me. We got out early enough before
everything happened. Uh, but if it had been one more day,
we wouldn't have handed doing this show from your families
like living room and stuff. And they'd mocked me, well,

(08:33):
assuming I had taken my comrax, which I wouldn't have.
Just you know, I actually just said I'm gone, and
there is a Tampa studio or there was that wasn't
too far away from where my folks are in clear Water,
So I guess I could have pulled that off using
this Comrex app right, which has been a disastrous. Whoever

(08:55):
came up with that idea needs to, uh need to
rethink the entire process of app locations and the sound
of them, because I feel bad anytime. So it says, hey,
if you tried the comrax app like Chris Perfett, probably
would have kicked me. Uh he's already angry tonight. Uh,
let's see, Bobo would have never talked to me again
if I tried that thing. Yeah, I'm glad you were

(09:17):
able to get back to l A because that would
have worked that that would have been a nightmare. I
think for all of us. You might have just had more,
Arnie Spaniard, And you'll have to decide in your soul
and consciousness of how that works for you. Have how
many hours becomes a threshold of dealing with would be
eleven hours in three days. That's a lot, Arnie, You're
gonna get a lot of them. You've got eight hours.
I mean, I had, I had my week of a

(09:40):
rest bit and then I watching all the NFL games.
I mean, there's storylines for days, some of which we'll
get into. The retirement announced this morning. You're looking at
more in Denver, questions of your raiders and whether you
have an operation shut down since situation this weekend and
for week A team even that for the Thursday niking

(10:01):
of whether we'll see King Henry when you've got a
game that matters in week eighteen and this one doesn't.
So so many delicious storylines. And I use that word
because it is dinner time here on the West Coast.

Me Mike Harmon here on Fox Sports Radio. Jason out
this week getting a little R and R ahead of
the New Year and the stretch run and into the
NFL Playoffs with the road leading to Arizona and Chris

(12:59):
were ooint now on the hotline as we are each
and every week, friend of the show one O five
seven the fan in Baltimore, Odyssey, Washington Post writer, long
time NFL inside our buddy Jayson Locket for at Jason
Locket for where you find them on Twitter, Jason, Merry Christmas,

(13:20):
Happy New Year, Happy holidays. Hopefully you've found some rested
from the cold. Oh the same to you guys. Yeah, yeah,
it it definitely jumped up a notch. But I think
they're saying sixty degrees for the Ravens Steelers game on
Sunday night. I mean it may cool off a little

(13:40):
bit by them, but I think the high on Sunday
now supposed to be in the sixties. So yeah, we
we broke mother Nature, no doubt about that. But yeah,
I hope everybody happy holidays and Merry Christmas and all,
and happy New Year to you guys as well. And
uh yeah, you know has in store for us with
the NFL playoffs, penty of chaos and we we look

(14:04):
at the game that did get flexed, that you referenced there,
Mike Tomlin excited saying something good gotta be happening if
you're flexed in. But everybody's just holding up signs going
where's Lamar? Yeah? And I it's early, but I'd be
surprised if he played in this game. Um, he's missed
nine straight practices. There were a lot of people out
there trying to tell you he was coming back, you know,

(14:25):
two weeks ago, and that this is just a one
or two week injury. But there's a lot going on here.
And you know the Ravens they're in the playoffs. You know,
are they going to catch Cincinnati? I don't know. You know,
it would be tough. Um, they just beat Pittsburgh a

(14:46):
couple of weeks back in Pittsburgh with the third string
quarterback Anthony Brown. Now I don't know if they could
do that twice in a row, whether it's Huntley or
Brown or whatever. But I also don't know that this
is a game that if Lamar is limited all week
or barely practices, that you want to put them out

(15:06):
there when you got high Smith and Hayward and Whatt
and and you know some dudes who have really hurt
them over the years, and that you know, you may
compromise yourself for your postseason life playing in a game that,
while it's certainly meaningful, it's more meaningful for the Steelers

(15:27):
than the Ravens in a lot of ways. So my
suspicion is he doesn't play to me. The more I mean,
I don't want to say the more, but maybe just
as sort of interesting, is is Huntley practicing or is
he sitting out with tendonitis because he's not nearly good enough,

(15:48):
nearly experienced enough, nearly polished enough for them to think,
you know, that they can just keep kind of doing
this thing they're doing where he barely practices in the week,
and then they put them out there with a bunch
of number four number five receivers and think they're going
to have any semblance of a passing offense. Like it's
not tenable. So I don't know, guys. He has scrambled

(16:12):
Joey through a ball to Sammy Watkins for forty yards.
He made one nice connection to Andrews for thirty six.
The rest of the day was seven or fifteen for
thirty nine yards. I guess the terrible Atlanta defense, So
take the under. Take the under take the under Ravens

(16:33):
eleven and four to the under. This year, Ravens have
going under in six of the last seven. And what
I mean they go under like they go under the team.
The total for the game is sixteen points like go
under down periscope, no question, Dalla Kelsey Grammar reference Jason intrigue.
Intrigue of course with the Broncos coaching search. Now anything

(16:56):
odd about I mean, well, nothing out of at the
timing we all watched Sunday. Is it a place where
Sean Payton could end up? Do you see this being
kind of dan quinn slam dug job? What do you
make of this search? Now? Yeah, you know, there's a
couple of different ways it could go. It was an
interesting press conference today. It seemed to me to be
a rookie owner who got his limelight for the first time.

(17:20):
And boy, it's a lot more fun dealing with the
sports press than it is dealing with the business press.
And oh boy, I like seeing my name on that
ESPN ticker hunt and he's going to report to me
and I'm in charge. Uh yeah, uh. If Sean Payton
goes there, then then there's gonna be a change at GM,

(17:40):
and and maybe part of the signaling here about oh,
the coach is going to report directly to me, the
owner and not George the GM was signaling that, you know,
we're open to different sorts of philosophies and different sorts
of you know, hierarchy structures. But if Sean Payton were

(18:02):
to go there, you're gonna have to give him all
the money, which I don't think they'll care about, and
you're gonna have to Like I think he would want
to bring Jeff Ireland or somebody like that as his
personnel guy, and the personnel guy reports to the coach,
and of course the coach reports directly to the owner.
But I don't know, man, I don't know if he
really wants to be in Denver. I don't know if

(18:22):
he wants to have to go through Andy Reid and
Patrick Mahomes every year just to get a division title,
let alone a Super Bowl. UM. And that's a team
that's compromised by all the draft capital they gave up
for Russell Wilson. And while I know for a fact
that Sean Payton was interested in training for Russell Wilson, UM,
you know, a couple of years ago, I don't know

(18:48):
that he loves what he's seen of Russell. Wilson says, then,
so it's certainly in play, But like, is that better
than going to Houston and getting all the money and
all the power there and then maybe even putting up
with one more horse bleached season to try to get
the kid from USC and start, you know what, I mean,

(19:10):
to start the whole thing with him a year from now,
and in the meantime just keep trying to load up
on draft picks. Ah, I don't think there's gonna be
as many openings as normal. I think, from I think
from a head coaching standpoint, is probably five or six,
and I don't know how many are really going to
appeal for him. And Denver obviously will be in play,

(19:34):
but I don't I don't know if that's where he
wants to be. Well, the curiosity you mentioned draft picks,
like do they have enough capital to give New Orleans
to get the rights to Sean Payton at all? Well,
I think is gonna watch Sean Payton in the A
s C. So they might take a little bit you know,
there might be a little bit of a cushion there, um,

(19:58):
but really the driving worse is going to be where
you know, where does Sean want to be? Where does
he think he has the best chance to relaunch this
you know, second phase of his career. And look, I
wouldn't put this number high if I were handicapping it,
but like it could be a scenario where there are

(20:21):
just four or five openings, you know what I mean,
and none of them brought like, knock his socks off,
and they're you know, they're only going to want to
even more a year from now. And if there's a
year with a low number, history will tell you the
following year there's a real purge. And and he he
doesn't have to do anything. He could sit on the

(20:42):
sidelines for another year. Can I ask you about Derek
car without sounded like a complete total homer because I
don't think it's all his fault. Um. I do think
that there's obviously some issues between his consistency this season
meshing with Josh mc annual system. But I can't imagine

(21:02):
going to a guy that's been there nine years and
has been a team captain for I think all nine
of those and saying we're sitting you out for the
final two games because we don't want you to get
hurt and basically, we're not bringing you back. And that's
the caveat here right now. Do we just have to
accept that we've seen Derek Carr take a final snap
as the Raiders quarterback. I think the Raiders are going
to be very involved in this quarterback this this uh

(21:26):
quarterback draft class. And I don't think Derek Carr has
a future there and I think he knows it at
this point, and I think they know it at this point.
I did some work on this for the Washington Post,
talk to some gms and exacts like they could probably
get a two plus, you know, like a two and

(21:46):
something else based on performance for him, and after this season,
I think they probably have to call that a win.
You know. They structured that extension in a way that
allowed them supreme flexibility to continue to gauge his future
on a year to year basis. It's a very tradable contract.

(22:06):
You can't tell me that's not by design. Uh. And
I mean if this is what it looked like with
Devonte for a year, and you know what I mean
that he's getting up there a little bit now, like
both of the wrong side, like thirty, are you just
gonna play that out and hope it gets better or
or are you going to have to fix this in

(22:27):
a way that has more long term upside. So you know,
they don't have the greatest cache of draft picks either,
but I think they're going to be heavily motivated to
move around that draft board if need be, to try
to get in a position to land one of these quarterbacks. Um,

(22:47):
you know, I think the kid from Alabama's going first
over all in Houston. As long as they stay there
and then after that, there's gonna be a lot of
beauties in the eye of the beholder. Jason lockeing for
our guest year, the Jason Switch with Mike Carmen coming
here from the tire act dot Com Studios. Chris plank
In for Jason Smith Today. You can read Mr Lockin
for his work and too many times I say the

(23:09):
word Jason. Mr Lockett for his work over at Watchington Post.
Find him on Twitter at Jason Lockin for uh, the
obvious big question in the room? Do we see two again?
The NFL really went to the wall to go and
scour it's in the tape to make sure that there
was nothing egregious that was missed. Or at least that's

(23:31):
what they say. Well, we're at a point in the
guy's career to his career, but it's certainly a lot
of handwringing over what should be done. Yeah, well, you know,
he there was another obviously very public incident. Um, I
guess it's been probably a couple of months ago and
he missed monthiple weeks. Then, uh, I would be shocked

(23:56):
if he gets cleared by the independent neurologist for this
upcoming game, and then you know, look, based on the
outcome of that game and other outcomes around the league,
it might even you know, they might basically have nothing
to play for, and if they have something to play for,
I just looking at this from an optics standpoint, I

(24:19):
think it only stands to reason that if he's in
the concussion protocol for the third time in a short
period of time, and you know, a previous stint resulted
in a multi week absence, I don't think yeah, I don't.
I don't think he's playing in the regular season, and
then there's a lot of variables that have to fall
into place to see if the Dolphins are even still

(24:41):
playing football at that point. Um, I just feel for
the young man. Uh, there was obviously a moment in
that game where he got tossed to the ground and
in the back of his head and neck area hit
the turf with some velocity, and you know, I guess
he didn't start feeling the symptoms of that till the

(25:02):
following day. Um. And I don't think we'll ever get
to a point where there's a full proof um detection process,
like I don't. I don't know that a perfect protocol exists. Um.
But man, for his you know, for his long term

(25:25):
health and long term quality of life, it's hard to
start thinking in those terms. I guess in some ways
with how young he is in his career, but with
the way that this sort of brain trauma intensifies, and
especially when these these blows are coming in fairly rapid succession. Uh. Yeah,

(25:47):
I can't imagine how an extended period on the sidelines
wouldn't seem to make sense A Jason final thought from me,
I know that I know there's a lot of cool storylines. Again,
we could wax nostalgically on J. J. Watt's career, but
I want to get your take on who you got
as the one seed in the f C. I think

(26:08):
This is a fascinating battle with a big time Monday
night football matchup. Obviously, the Chiefs got a little bit
of a glide schedule into the final two weeks of
the season. But who's your favorite to end up with
a one seed in the f C. Well, look, I
thought the Chiefs were gonna slip up here at some
point in time, and they managed to, you know, hold
something like the Rams. They played poorly against Right and

(26:29):
the Texans, but they managed to pull those things out.
So I'm not sure that they're going to spit the bit,
you know, And if they don't, then they're gonna get
that that one seed. But I think Cincinnati is a
really dangerous team. Uh. They've endured some injury situations the

(26:50):
likes of which they didn't last year. It looks like
they're gonna get a few guys back for the playoffs.
I like their chances at home a night against Buffalo.
They've been arguably the best team in the NFC, in
the NFL, certainly one of the top two or three
sits that oh and to start, uh, and they just

(27:11):
find ways to win games now in a way that
that franchise never really has before. And so I look,
I think Cincinnati is going to be real frisky in
the playoffs. And if you told me they were the
last team standing in the a f C again, I
wouldn't you know, I wouldn't be surprised. Whether or not
they get that one seed remains to be seen. But

(27:34):
unlike pretty much everybody else in the field, they went
the arrowhead not that long ago, with the entire season
on the line and slaying that dragon despite pretty much
seemingly giving that game away in the first half. So
I would not take them lightly. All right, Let's go

(27:54):
to the other side of the coin real quick. When
we look at the NFC, You've got the Eagles and
Jalen Hurts may or may not available, Lane Johnson is out,
Maddox is out with a significant toe injury. So you
got those injuries. Dallas is there and then suddenly the
anti hero is suddenly creeping around the back door in
Aaron Rodgers. What happens these weeks? I think Minnesota Beach

(28:19):
Green Bay this week and that puts through that just
extinguishes them. Yeah, uh, I think San Francisco is Look
the Lane Johnson injuries to me massive and can they survive?
You know, A couple of weeks to three weeks without him, Sure,
but is there going to be some game and it

(28:40):
might even be against the team like Dallas or certainly
San Francisco where they just start moving guys around and
looking for certain matchups and the right tackle just can't
hold up, whether it's Parsons or Boasts or whatever. Yeah,
I mean, I think you you'd be foolish not to
consider that possibility. The UM so that does give me

(29:02):
paulse that's a huge, hugely significant injury, and I do
think it's going to be more long term than not.
Um And you know they obviously I think we'll get
that buy and all that, but still I think they're
gonna have to play at least one playoff game without him,
and that that could be massive. I think, you know,
up until the point of that injury, they were, for me,

(29:25):
the best team in football. But um, I'll say this, man,
If Gardner Minshow's not starting somewhere next year, this league
is messed up. Absolutely. I was just gonna he's I
don't know, somewhere between the sixteenth and twentieth best quarterback
on the planet. If if some super smart GM like

(29:47):
Howie rosemen he gets to keep him on the back
burner as his his back up next year making a
couple of million bucks. Then there's something wrong with this
league and he's gonna be an overstricted free agents. So
that's not gonna happen again. But you can do a
hell of a lot worse than Gardner. Minshew. That's our buddy,

Welcome back in Fox Sports Radio, Jason Smitzchell with Me,
Mike Harmon, No Jason Smith Tonight, Chris Blank in his
stead as recome to you from the tire Act dot
Com Studios, Wisconsin. A seventeen seven lead, ten minutes to
go in the third quarter of the guaranteed rate and
bowl they have to pay us for that. Oh my gosh,

(32:43):
I just say a bowl game game. I'm literally watching
this and there it's a baseball stadium, football game in
a baseball stadium. The turf is terrible. Uh. The quarterback
Rank Galla, freshman for Oklahoma State, just try to hear
the football off in the Literally, as soon as the
running back got the football, Mike, he fell flat on
his face. So things are not going well for the

(33:06):
Old cow Books tonight in Arizona. I do always joke
about the inability of players to fall forward when they're
struggling in the run game, and certainly we're seeing it here. Uh.
And as a Chicagoan, having watched people player decide not
to come play at Soldier Field for years, I understand
the problems related to such situations. I mean, Northwestern played

(33:29):
a couple of games over at Wrigley Field where they
do that. Obviously, we watched the Pinstrike Bowl at Yankee
Stadium each and every year, so always curious watching the
configurations and the ground crew, the the unheralded heroes or
villains some of these games. In this case, they might
be villains, Mike, based on what I'm watching here this evening,
not pretty well. How about the equipment people and their cleats? Guilty?

(33:54):
Maybe make adjustment, Maybe you forgot the extra case to
change out the cleats. Unfortunately, I know the O. S
U equipment guy, so if I pointed a finger at him,
he could show up at my door and be ready
to throw hands. It's your faults, your your fault, Bob,
I don't know, so I'll give him, Bob no Chief.
You just say Chief's your fault, Yeah, Chief, big guy whatever,

(34:19):
that's literally yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm not just saying give
a nickname. That's literally what they call him. That's the oude.
So you let Chief know that he didn't get the
shoes right tonight and that's why people are falling all
over the place. And we just said that across four
hundred plus nationwide affiliates. And take that the globe on
the I Heart radio app Carrious wherever you go, uh
and Chief now it will be called to the carpet

(34:40):
needs to be well. My carman was the one who
pointed it out. It could be the equipment guy following lead. Hey,
we're talking about all the variables whenever we go through
processes on this show. And and perhaps I'm too logical
for my own good at times because I don't do
enough hot take throw stuff at walls, uh kind of
things like we won't with this next top right to

(35:00):
a tongue of iloa. Uh. In concussion protocol, you had
Alan Sills, the NFL's Chief medical Officer, on NFL Network
doing the mr. What is it the old razzle dazzle?
Do you ever watch the movie version of Chicago. All right,
So you got Richard gear as the lawyer, and his
old deal is if you give them a good enough show,

(35:22):
they won't really pay attention to what you're saying and
what reality is. So where a shiny shoot suit, do
a little bit of a dance, all of those kind
of things, and then you know you're you're flapping your
gums and they're kind of half paying attention. And I
wonder if the NFL at some level, this is what
you do when you realize your system has some flaws

(35:44):
in it. Quote, what are spotters and are unaffiliated neurodoctors
are looking for is any blow that transmits force to
the head or neck area followed by that injury behavior.
And so there are many blows to the head that
occurred during a game. There were no visible signs present
even though it was a blow to the head, and
the player did not report any symptoms despite being in
contact with the medical staff throughout the game. So there's

(36:06):
nothing that would have triggered the protocol in the moment.
And you've seen the video if you've been on social
media at all, going back to the about three minutes
left in the second quarter to forty I think was
the clock point as the snap comes on on a
first down where two A dumps the ball off and
gets unceremoniously dumped, spins backwards, hits the back of his head,

(36:28):
and then we see the performance thereafter. Uh comes into
the facility the next day citing symptoms. They put him
into you know, check him out, and now he's back
in protocol and the range of reaction to all this.
He should retire immediately because of this, and long term
we talk about not playing again for two think of

(36:52):
to Uh. The team has to step in protect the
guy from himself. You've got a guy into Ah who
had a year last you're right, yanked in and out
of the lineup, and then he has the coach that
believes in him, has a great start to the season.
We all know how that was handled in earlier in
the year, and then he missed a few games and
comes back and has this hit, has the bad second half,

(37:15):
horrendous second half, which in the moment you just attributed
to all right, the Packers found him out. I thought
Terry Bradshaw and some of his reaction to it was alright,
just from a breakdown of what you can disguise as
a defense given the fact that he's not your statue
S six four quarterback. I thought was pretty good, just
game analysis of what you can and can't see and

(37:38):
and why the deep ball works better. But going away
from the football side of it to the other football
side of it is, Yeah, Miami's got to make a
decision long term of what TWOA is to their organization.
Short term, whether trying to make the playoffs and fight
off the other contenders, uh is enough to to risk

(38:00):
and physically can he get cleared to play once again?
Some are calling that the NFL there will be a
conspiracy that under no circumstances will he be cleared just
for optics purposes. So you've got all of this swirling
around Chris, and you know, I try to be pragmatic
with these things and the old protect them from themselves.
I mean, if we're true about it, with a lot

(38:22):
of this, you changed the game entirely, if that's if
that's your ultimate goal. So last night, whenever I was
sitting in with Arnie, this story broke literally Monday afternoon, right,
Uh literally broke Monday afternoon. So you had the the
whole night Sunday, and then early part of the day Monday,
and then Mike McDaniel comes out of his press conference

(38:44):
and says, you know, to his in concussion protocol. So
I didn't. I hadn't really listened to the press conference,
and I was just following it back and forth all
day long, and I was of that opinion where, oh,
I bet he plays. I I mean, if he didn't
take himself out of the game. Uh. And that's a
double edged sword. Yeah, if you take yourself out, your
soft but yeah, we're supposed to have concussion awareness. And

(39:05):
then I listened to Mike McDaniel talk about it, and
I mean, I I don't know if I'm falling for
something here or if I'm maybe getting pulled in. And
I got the audio. I can play if you guys want.
If not, that's fine to to me. Whenever I heard
Mike McDaniel say this, I was like, Okay, there's not
only no way that I don't know if that's proper English.

(39:28):
There's not only no way that TOA is playing this weekend.
I think he's pretty much done for this season. So
I may be falling for it. But here's what McDaniel
had to say. I care very deeply about each and
every player. Um, I take that serious. So you know,
I just I just want him to get healthy and
have peace of mind in that regard, and that's first

(39:48):
and foremost, and then whatever those circumstances are after, you
deal with after. But it's about the human being and
making sure he's squared away. So I might be falling
for the old banana and the tailpipe here or something,
but when I heard that, I was like, he ain't
plenty again this year. And I know Mike McDaniel doesn't
make that decision, and I know it comes down to
doctors and and player, But I mean, if you really

(40:10):
feel that way as a head coach and you say that, Mike,
how in the world could you possibly let that guy
go out there this Sunday and try to play well?
If if you're gonna go down that that route, then
then Chris, when when is he cleared next September? Ever? Right?
It that that's the question that now falls out of

(40:30):
the circumstances that we've had with two of for the year,
right is I mean, this is his third concussion, right right,
But we're looking at short term if he's out of
protocol and he's able to play the next hit could
be the next one, right, so if that's next week,
two weeks, six weeks from now, like and obviously not

(40:53):
a brain surgeon scientist of any level except for studying,
uh some microeconomics back in the day, uh, whatever that is.
But when when we get down to it, it's I
understand with McDaniel because remember when when this all went transpired,
he was trying and fighting for words weeks ago to

(41:15):
try to make sense of it. And you can tell
the guy genuinely cares about his guys, right, He relates
to them, young guy, about their age, all of that,
So that there's maybe a different level of connectivity when
we go through as opposed to hey, you're thirty years
my senior or more. Uh, that maybe there's a different
relationship that happens. But I think that's that's the question

(41:37):
that we have to ask, is what's that magic number?
Because if you if that's really the way you feel,
how do you ever let him take the field for
you again? Yeah, how can you possibly accept anything outside
of he don't take a long time to make sure
that he's right. But but even then, Chris, I mean,
it's are you gonna be holding your breath every time

(41:58):
he takes a snap. That's what ended up happening with
Steve Young, where he's like, I just can't do this
right anymore. But that's just it. So on two on
the team, does the team just say, Okay, we can't
do this for his sake? Boy? That is that's where
we are in the world of concussions. You know, I
hate to make it sound so sinister, but here we go.

(42:19):
How many is too many? At what point do you say, yeah,
I can't afford another one of these, because I don't
know if I'm gonna come back from this one. I mean,
Dale Jr. And Nascar, You've seen it in other sports.
It's it's the unanswerable question because he wants to play right.
It seems like too of Love's football. He's not a
guy that we have to question his desire. But you're right, Mike,

(42:41):
if he's out a protocol, are you gonna feel comfortable
put him back out there this week? This week, next week,
they make the playoffs, they squeak in and he's cleared,
then is that enough time passed? Like, you know, how
how do we do this in terms of what the
length of time you know, for the brain and for
the trauma to subside to a level to where you're comfortable.

(43:05):
It's a really deep conversation. We've had Chris Nowinski on before.
You've seen him on Twitter UH talking about player health,
and we had him on during that sequence of events
with two UH in season, and he's very much on
the discussion of once once you've gotten diagnosed, that you

(43:25):
really need to to protect the player. You know, to paraphrase,
you know where he comes from, like you've got a
limited earning potential, a limited career in this in this path,
so you've got all of these different parts winning. You've
got to whoever, some people wanted out the door before
this season, and so he's trying to fight through this
proovy belongs and that he should keep this job. And

(43:49):
we've been watching some of the performances have been more average, right.
He had a couple of huge performances, go back all
the way to the beginning of the season with that
touchdown performance against the Ravens that got everybody to open
their eyes. You've had some explosive plays and then you've
had a couple of games where the offense just gets
bogged down. And certainly their games against the l A

(44:11):
teams and the second half against Green Bay or opening
the door for questions about too as a long term
viable quarterback, just as a quarterback, say nothing of the
health concerns. Now you pile those together, You've got Miami
that's got to make a big decision as to whether
he's your guy again as a player and from the

(44:34):
medical side of all right, can we go into the
season with this as a consideration of how we have
to build this team going forward? Do you find yourself
then in a position where this next offseason, Mike, when
we think it's gonna be a wild quarterback carousel, are
you looking? You know, you don't have a first round pick,
so you're you're probably unless you're going for a second

(44:55):
or third round guy, you're probably not gonna find someone
in the draft. I know it sounds brutal to say
when we're talking about out the concerns over, but it's
the reality. Three concussions, that's right. You've got life goes on, man.
You've got a team that needs to win, You've got
a coach that wants to keep his job. You've got
a lot of guys that have got a lot of
incentives and bonuses to to win games and get a
lot of receiving yards and touchdowns. So I just I

(45:17):
hate it for two of them because it seemed like,
even though they've lost four straight games, it seemed like
he'd found someone that believed in him and with weapons
like Jalen Waddle and with weapons like Tyree Kill, they
were using him. And we could go deep on the
Miami Dolphins moster and and so on. But I again,
two things are undefeated in time, Uh well, there's many

(45:37):
more than that. But in sports, mother nature and injuries, right,
not mother nature, excuse me, father time. It's been a
long night. Nature. You're getting old. But it's right, father.
They are undefeated and two is fine with father time.
But on the injury front, there becomes a point where
you know, not everything's like it should be. You're you're

(46:02):
you're concerned, you're not falling the way you should, you're sliding,
whatever it might be, it affects you. You have to
change up your game, which everybody affects everything else. Right,
we've seen the timing on the deep ball, and you've
seen him be able to hit in stride on occasion.
Sometimes Hill has to come back for whatever. But air
yards you know, it's the one of the biggest things

(46:23):
that if you were just to think about the year
for the Miami Dolphins, you'd be thinking that most of
it would be Yack. It's not. It's air yards from
Tua that he leads in and is the top five
guy coming into this past week in the NFL as
opposed to catching a guy and stride and streaking to daylight.
But to your point about the quarterback carousel, you know,

(46:45):
would you rather go in and after all the tampering
or whatever, go find if Tom Brady wants to come in,
or go get Derek Carr Because we always aide age ourselves.
I don't think we d guys the same way. You're like,
Derek Carr, Yeah, he's through nine years. Yeah, And that's
that's how you blink and that's how far we are
along the timelines for some of these guys
