be Well, Mike Carmen, I gotta say, if my math
is correct, and I know you double checked and triple
check me from half last night, and I was a
rock star. If the Lakers hold on to beat Utah,
(01:06):
do they clinch the number one seed in the Western Conference,
that fuzzy math world in which we live. Yes, Okay,
because that's kind of it's a recent, ce biased thing
of how you're playing down the stretch, much like getting
a top seed in the NCAA Men's basketball tournament. Are
you playing well right now? Yes, you are. You are
(01:26):
the number one seed. So I just want to make
because that's kind of how it's been, you know, thrown
around that boy this leg. Why they they gonna be
number one, They're gonna they clinch over the Nuggets. That's
kind of where it is right now. No, they're the
greatest team in the world now that they've played and
now look defensively, they've been fantastic for twenty games. Lebron
James is suddenly, look at my team, my team leadership
(01:47):
from the bench. Maybe he gave some heartfelt speeches while
he was sidelined at Yeah, you know, I kind of
love the fact that Lebron now it seems to be
leading the Hey, we're all in for a championship. Dude,
you were sitting on the bench, not playing. The team
was playing better without you. It was an awful optic
for you. You weren't gonna come back until you were
(02:09):
challenged to come back, and suddenly, then miraculously you were okay.
To play the next day and now it's hey, we're
hungry for a championship. Oh we are suddenly weirds Oh okay,
that's like Ronda Rousey and the other night was she
what what did she do? Like like a like like
it she had for like a half a seconds, right, yeah,
she and Gunter used the same tactic. Gunter retains the
(02:32):
Intercontinental title after watching Drew McIntyre and shame Has beat
the hell out of each other and then the fatal
four way tag team match, Rousey did the same thing
where she had chance, she finished the match. I'm showing
up the end looking like I've been leading the whole time.
That's lebron. Hey, yeah, we have a will to win
a championship here, come on, are all in this together? Yeah?
(02:54):
The team that could that could that really were okay?
Not having him back and if he wasn't playing and
a hand base in a city, that would be okay
if he never playing again. Now it's on it. Yeah,
I'm leaving this whole thing. This is great, man, This
is all you're kidding. This is this is why I play,
This is why we all play. And they're like, right, yeah,
right right, I forgot all the stuff you did. Yes, yes, yes, yes,
(03:16):
but right now it is a big first half for
the Lakers. They will go to the locker room, most
likely with a double digit lead thirteen seconds away from
the break, and the Lakers lead the Jazz sixty eight
to fifteen. Lebron's having a big night. He's got sixteen,
Anthony Davis has sixteen, Hatchamura's got nine off the bench
(03:39):
for the Lakers. Look big night tonight because depending how
things go, I mean, you are you are the Lakers,
and you could say, hey, you know now forget about
looking behind us now the Pelicans, Yeah, Pelicans are right there.
They've been playing okay, won the last couple of games.
But we're thinking upward, man, we're thinking now in that
top we're thinking maybe we can pass the Clippers. I mean,
probably too much to think gonna get past the Suns,
(04:01):
but we could pad We could finish fifth if we
want to, which I don't really know. If you want
the Suns in the first round of the playoffs because
of Kevin Duranto, maybe you want to stay in that
sweet six spot so you get the Kings, which might
maybe where they want to get there and stay there,
which is gonna be a tough needle to thread. But
if you're the Lakers, you are thinking on an upward
because they have played much better probably to this ceiling.
(04:23):
You would expect a team to play after the trade
deadline as far as improvements go. Nobody goes on runs
and wins like fifteen twenty games in a row after
that just doesn't happen to the NBA. But they are
playing as well as you possibly could expect them to
right now at this point in time. And I'm gonna
I'm gonna floor you with maybe the best thing I
could say by the Lakers in a couple of seconds.
I just kind of not I just gotta get it
(04:45):
right in my mind before I say it. But I'm stop.
I'm gonna say something incredible about the Lakers. Don't do it.
You're you're jumping on the bandwagon, because I think you're
gonna end up going off the deep end like a
lemming in a shiny metal box, just like so many
other of our media brethren. That's right obligatory Sting reference
and not the Sting that was hanging out in the
rafters overseeing this time. Might gonna see him on Sunday
(05:10):
finishing his residency in Vegas could be a road trip.
Anthony Davis has played twenty five of the last twenty
seven games coming into tonight sixteen seven and four. James
getting it done. Hatchamura. Sometimes they just don't have enough
minutes for him. I mean, they just that's how rich
they are right now. Evidently that's what they tell me,
(05:30):
which is why Jason's now going to predict them to
win the Western Conference straight to hell. Now, wait a minute,
I shall send you to heaven before that as a train.
We do not need you jumping on si oh, get
on that troll. But go Chason, go chasing, Go go Jason,
Go Chason. Go I I I at the end of
(05:52):
your first year, Discover credit cards automatically double all the
cash back you are And that's right, everything you are
and doubled. Seriously see terms. Check it out for yourself.
Discover dot Com, slash match TJ. Clearly the Lakers can
take a Randy Rhodes to the NBA Finals today. Okay,
so soon, well, come on, I gotta pay. I gotta
pay an homage one of the greatest, right when you
(06:15):
get to say, oh, oh much. But here's the thing, right,
just think about the NBA and think about the Western
Conference here for a second, right, just just just just
take a deep breath, because what I say you're gonna go, Well, yeah,
the Nuggets are the best team in the Western Conference.
They're the team that looks the most unbeatable. They've been
meandering a little bit the last week and a half
(06:35):
or so, but they basically have the number one seed clinched.
They're going to be an impossible out in the playoffs,
or at least they should be. If they don't get
to the NBA Finals this year, they'll never get there
because this is their year to do it. Because everybody
else I'm not big fans of And you know me,
I told you Memphis was going to the NBA Finals.
You think I would feel great about them in the
(06:56):
two seeds. Okay, they're playing well, but how are they
going to hold up in the big time pressure of
a playoff? Specifically, I'm thinking, if you wind up Memphis
and the Lakers in the first round of the playoffs,
and then once you get below memphisis I'll come on real,
Sacramentos having a nice season, but really, again, bright lights
the playoffs, Phoenix. If Kevin Durant is healthy, look out,
(07:18):
but can you count on Kevin Durant. Then you have
the Clippers, who have always under underachieved the Warriors as
much as they've won a little bit more and a
little bit more on the road lately. Look, they're still
a five hundred team. So if you are the Lakers, right,
think about this. No team has improved as much because
of changes they have made. Then the Lakers right what
(07:39):
they did past the deadline. Everything seems to be working
right because when Lebron got hurt, they fell into that
blessing of well, now we'll pay D'Angelo Russell with Austin
Reeves in the backcourt. You know what, That's worked great.
And ad has decided I can be the Anthony Davis
I need to be every night from now on. Okay,
then you mentioned Rue High Chamura, who now is settling
(08:01):
into a very regular role from me's starting to produce
a little bit more. Lebron James comes back. Yeah, the
Lakers are dangerous now. And if I'm the Lakers, and
I could say it's for the Lakers, I could say this,
but I'll say it for the Lakers because it's it's
the way they've been playing, and now Lebron is back
and throwing down dunks like you did in the first half,
looking looking spry? Is that if I'm the Lakers, I
(08:23):
think Western Conference Finals? Why not? Why not us? Because
the Western Conference is so wide open that I can't
say for certain, I could say, yeah, they're gonna get
worked by anybody except for the Nuggets. The Nuggets are
clearly the class of the Western Conference, and you know,
maybe they's something could happen. Injuries always happened in the playoffs,
and you never know, but we deal with where we
(08:44):
sit right now. But their improvements that they made, this
team has played pretty well. They have figured a lot
of things out, So why not if they finished six? Yeah,
they could beat Sacramento in the first round and move on.
I mean, when you run into the Nuggets, that's gonna
be a thing. And should want to run into them
earlier than later, because you don't want to run in
an extra round of the playoffs when Lebron is as
(09:05):
old as he is. You want to be able to
play Hi when he's still got a little bit more
of a jump. But if you're the Lakership, why not, Man,
this is the Western Conference, This year. Why, just like
the Warriors can think, why not us? We're a championship team. No,
we can't win on the road, but it doesn't matter.
We've got to sneak one on the road during during
a playoff series. Why these teams should all why this
is a why not us? Here? And the Nuggets should
be really nervous and really worried because this is their
(09:28):
year and that comes at anxiety with being the team
that you know when you take the court every night,
we should be playing for the championship at the end
of the year. We should be on ABC and and
and the Bright Lights, and everybody's talking about yo kitchen
Murray and all these things. And Michael Malone is telling
everybody my name is Michael. I do it all the time,
but people don't pay attention. This is that time. So
(09:48):
if I'm the Lakers, why not? I really, this is
the best thing I can say about the Lakers that
have been able to say in months. Why not? Well,
and we build the narrative as we talked about that
over the last a couple of weeks, chronicling the defensive
metrics and you know, take them for what they are.
You know, some folks want to throw away the advanced
analytics at all. But they've played well, good rotation, rebounding
(10:13):
guys that are are really selling out on both ends
of the court. And again give Anthony Davis' credit as well. Yes,
we dogged him when he took that day off, right,
it was the scheduled part after a loss. Like wait,
that was set four weeks ago. It's a different world now.
It's like, well, he's he's picked up and he's played
every other game since, and so with him leading the way,
(10:36):
you've watched the rotation tighten up. You've watched guys work
in unison on both ends of the court, and certainly Lebron.
You never say you're better off without Lebron playing, but
at times there was a cohesiveness and an energy that
that unselfish basketball. They weren't standing around waiting for one
(11:00):
guy to carry them. So there is something to be
said for that. Now, if he comes back in and
over the next four games and into the playoffs, he's healthy.
Whoever he saw as the Lebron James of feet, doctors,
somebody that came from Germany to give him a treatment
or whatever whatever the case of. At this point, it's
all speculation because we have no idea what he did
(11:21):
to suddenly get right other than the motivation of everybody's
falling in love with the rest of the team when
he wasn't playing. It's a great motivator, right, It's like
they're better without you, damnit. I gotta get back on that.
And that's kind of where he's at. So you know,
get in where you fit in is where he's at.
Six of ten, sixteen points in this one against a
(11:43):
hapless Jazz squad. Remember how hot they started the season,
how well they were playing. What about it? Nah, not
so fast that that fell apart right rather quickly. But
now you're in a situation for the for the Lakers
if if they stay healthy, and the fact that we
have to heavy at that is a problem in it
of itself. But what's Denver done to prove it. It's
(12:04):
like Phoenix when they were regular season champions, you know,
last year. I don't know what does that mean? What
does that mean when you get to the playoffs? Not
a damn thing, because the regular season half your games,
you've got teams that are playing for some other purpose,
rounding in new young talent, trying to use young talent
(12:26):
so you lose a hell of a lot of games.
You've got a bunch of veterans, and you're taped together
and string and duct tape to try to get through
the end of the season, just hoping that you're in
the postseason. All of those things put together means for
an eighty two game season, you may have one hell
of a run become the playoffs. You're just as big
a wild card as anybody else. Okay with that, Frostburg,
(12:49):
You're okay with me saying the Laker that's the best
thing I could say about forget months. This is the
best thing I could say about the Lakers in a year.
Basically said to America, just now, in five minutes what
I told you two months ago. What's that We're coming
for that nugget? Ast man? They're baby. The Nuggets raised
(13:09):
out down by twenty Yeah. Yeah, look it in the
rear view mirror. Man, No, look it in the rear
view mirror, and they see him coming. Yeah, and look.
And speaking of like we said, the Pelicans are getting
thumped right now by Sacramento. That's gonna end with the loss.
The Lakers win this game, another game clear of New
Orleans and Lakers Clippers tomorrow night. You guys in state
(13:30):
right now, I mean it's I tell you this is hey,
there's been no more fun about basketball mediocrity than this
than these storylines of the middle of the Western Conference
the last few weeks. It's been fun. Man. You know
what they get in for that New Orleans Sacramento game
was they pay you SI Sacramento six dollars, but you
get yours. But you got something right, like you get
(13:53):
a free smoothie, right, Like you get something with it, right,
you get this and with your ticket you get a
free Well when they go in, they get drum like
they're getting drummed at home inside the final minute, down eighteen. Yeah,
I guess maybe from me again, these smoothies are all
gonna go back. Just take them on your way out.
He just take one. You have strawberry, Like all we
have left is mango. Just take mango, and I am
(14:13):
the smoothie king. Be happy with it. But I'm telling
you that's the best thing I could say about the
Lakers in a year. Why not them, I'm telling you
their adjustments have been pre tied. They've played pretty good.
Telling you look what he did. Do you look what
he just did, do you, Frostberg? Yeah, it's a good
thing they're really back, or else I'd be scared of
(14:34):
his pick. There. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten
pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific. Well again, there was once
in control of the Lakers, now decidedly undecided. You see
what you did here. It's all my fault, dude, shirk,
(14:54):
I said nothing could go wrong. Now, Lakers and the
Jazz one two to ninety nine. Lake try to hold on.
Still a lot of time left in this game, eight
and a half minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
How big of a game would this be in the
Western Conference? Well, Lakers win to go to forty one
and thirty eight, and the Warriors, who are trailing Oklahoma
(15:18):
City right now late in the second quarter. A Lakers
win in a Warrior's loss puts the Lakers in sixth
place in the West, heading into a showdown with the
Clippers tomorrow night, where they could move into fifth place.
The Lakers are in twelve, and they could be in
(15:40):
fifth place if they win. The next two day. Shows
you how brilliantly this all lays out and how muddled
that middle truly has become here in the National Basketball Association.
I mean that this is where if you said to me, hey,
do you think the NBA's got their thumb on the
scale for anything? No, no, no, no, no, Hey, the
(16:01):
Lakers are in twelve, man, we can't have this again.
Hid here they go, and really they are two nights
await for being a fifth place. But think about it,
like three weeks ago was the we're taking a flamethrower
to the season. Everything's blowing it up, killing all were
celebrating what they did at the trade deadline, wondering if
it was too little, too late, blah blah blah. Westbrook
(16:22):
and all the in fighting up at the top between
Clutch Sports and Lebron and Rob Lincoln Company, going back
to the beginning of the season, the reports of damn it,
you created this mess, you gotta play your way through it,
and then you make the move at the deadline, and
here we are potentially in fifth place in these final
(16:46):
games of this NBA regular season. Just amazing. Look, but
this is this is what I mean by when when
you look at the NBA, why always say fifty five games?
That's what the NBA season needs to be because we
don't get anything unbelieved from game fifty five and on. Yeah,
we have the drama here of teams maneuvering around in
the in the bottom of the Western Conference. Yeah, you're
(17:06):
gonna get some movement between the team six through ten
or twelve because they're all not very good. And all
you need to do, and we've said this, just play
a tiny bit better than five hundred. If you're from
the from the All Star break on, right, let's just
say you use that right the last twenty games. If
you can play the last twenty games eleven and nine,
(17:27):
or you're a twelve and eight, let's just say you
will move up past everybody because everybody else is just
going to hang around five hundred or be a little
bit below because that's kind of who they are. Right.
You got the teams everybody else is on losing streaks. Right,
Oklahoma City is three games under five hundred, right, the
Pelicans are one game over five hundred. The Warriors still
(17:50):
as well as they've been playing, and by that I
mean winning at least two games away from home in
the last couple of weeks. I mean they're still in
six they're in sixth place. Right, It's look at nobody
really moves. If you win a couple of games, it
seems like you win like five or six in a row. Right.
You compare that to the Eastern Conference, where a team
like the Knicks wins four or five in a row
and they're still in fifth place, right because they suck.
(18:12):
The minute notes because the Eastern Conference is good and
the Western Conference stinks. But that's what it is. If
you can just win a little bit, you maneuver, because
there's a reason why the teams are six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve,
because they're not that good and they don't suddenly get
all better. The Lakers got a little bit better at
the deadline and a couple of their moves worked, and
this is why they're they're moving up a little bit.
(18:32):
It's it's insane, but here they are. They were in
twelfth place and in forty eight hours it could be
I really I can't get over that that they could
be in fifth place in the Western Conference and Lebron
will stand up and have a press conference and say, yeah,
we're all buying in here, and everybody's getting on my
back and this is all me. You know why the
(18:52):
Lakers are going Oh dude, where were you? Man, Come on,
you were sitting out. You weren't even gonna play. Then
you weren't even gonna play. And we were like, ah,
Lakers say Lebron can come back last week of the season,
and you said, oh, no, one, no one speaks for
me but me. And then when you realize nobody really
cared if you came back or not, suddenly you were
back the next game. Oh no, no, I'm back. I'm back.
It's all me, everybody, it's all me here. Yeah, but
(19:15):
notice how all the boot liquors are there to talk
about his greatness and everything. I did this without here,
damn it. Man. But hey, look him coming back. Look
the Lakers have a little bit something something going on, right, Jason.
If not for Lebraun, they'd be in first place. Probably
without Lebron, they might have already clinched first place. They
might they might be able to be Austin Reeves might
(19:37):
be able to have them up with the with the
ninety six bulls. Hey maybe up at seven I might
have already given him dollars that could have been there.
It could have been there. So again, big night, in
the NBA, have a lot of drama to play out
the rest of this Lakers game. Oklahoma City in Golden State,
lots of stuff. Uh, and Phoenix is thumping San Antonio
right now. So we're not getting anything that shocking off.
But guess who's available if you're t needs a quarterback.
(20:01):
And no, this is not an Aaron Rodgers conversation. Well
he is available, he's available. Well, he's available for the Jets.
It's a still available, still a packer. It's not a
Lamar conversation, not Alamar Jackson saying no, no no, no, here's
no no. If your team wants Mac Jones, apparently you
can have him. Numerous sources reporting today the Patriots have
(20:22):
been shopping mac Jones this offseason as they look to
move on from mac Jones and this story. Look, I'm
gonna say something really insane, but it's not insane. But
the first thing I want to say is I don't
disagree with this move because Mac Jones is a Jag
who was overdrafted. Good luck getting anything for him. And
(20:45):
I know you kind of screwed the guy by taking
a defensive coordinator and making him the offensive coordinator and
didn't really put him in a great position with with
weapons and everything else. But Mac Jones is still a jag.
He's just a guy. But if he legitimately did what
Chris Simms is a edging he did, then yeah, beat it. Yeah,
look and you deserve it if you're reportedly going back
(21:06):
and hanging out and talking to your buddies on Zoom
that you hung out with at Alabama and saying, hey,
I need you guys to help me push through this
that the other and how we're working this offense? You
want to you went outside protocols? Yeah, no, and look
and then this is this is Chris Sim's story that
that he said is this is what happened, and we
(21:27):
knew that, uh there was potentially, Hey we need to
reach out, I need help with this. But this is
the This is Chris Sims saying this, look and yeah,
because you know, in the end, he is just a guy.
He's not great. He threw to a Heisman Trophy when
and other guys were the best receivers in the left.
He was just a guy. He was overdrafted because everybody
(21:48):
fell in love with Mac Jones. Look how good he is.
Because Alabama's the rock star program in college football. So
let's get Mac Jones in the first round. And and
Bill Belichick thought, I can go win with Mac Jones.
I can win with this guy unheralded out of Alabama.
I talked to Nick Saban all the time. He's given
me glowing reports about Mac Jones. But he's just a guy,
all right. He's good luck getting anything for him because
(22:10):
any team that trades from Mac Jones is he's coming
in as a backup. No one's coming in saying Mac Jones,
you're our starter, all right, So let's just understand that's
where Matt. So what are you gonna get from mac Jones?
A fourth round pick, you know, a third day pick
probably something like that for a guy that you took
in the first round. So yeah, I don't disagree with this.
I don't disagree with it because Mac Jones is just
a guy, and all these reports, there's got to be
(22:32):
a reason why some of this friction is out there.
And Chris Sims certainly had that report of a I'm
calling my buddies at Alabama and asking me that. But
the big thing is this, right and and and congratulations,
because this is something that falls under our category of
Tomorrow's takes tonight or two weeks ago, we told you
about Bill Belichick and the pressure he is under today.
(22:55):
I saw so many, so many checkmark people on so
well this allow check marks on media about what is
Bill Belichick doing? I don't understand. Why is he continue
to operate like this and all this stuff? And Mac
Jonesie would all in for Mac Jones and now they
want to train him. We told you two weeks ago.
The big salvo was fired by Bob Kraft when he said, hey,
(23:17):
I talked to Meek Mill who said that, hey, Lamar
Jackson would want to be there, but I tell him
that's up to Bill Belichick. Right. That was him putting
Belichick on notice, saying, dude, you gotta come through now.
It wasn't you have to go get Lamar Jackson, But
it's what are you really doing here? What are we
really doing a quarterback? I don't know. The Patriots have
a plan. This is the year. This is the year
(23:38):
for Bill Belichick. This is twenty twenty three in the
NFL for him, this is it. If they don't get
back to winning, he's done and he is being replaced.
And if you think he can't look at all the
other guys that have been replaced in sports in the
last few years that don't get to write their own ending,
whether it's Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, or Jim Beheim. You
don't get to write your own ending when you stop winning.
(24:00):
And not only has Bill Belichick stopped winning, he has
gone with a strategy that seems to be anti winning.
We're not gonna go spend money on star players. We're
not gonna go get a star quarterback. Why are we not?
Why are we not doing this? Why what is happening?
He's got this year and if his philosophy doesn't win again,
guess what after this year? It's gonna be mutual decision.
Belichick is stepping away from the Patriots. Bob Kraft is,
(24:22):
you know, giving somebody else the job? You know, whenever
it's going to be, and the Patriots are gonna move on.
It's gonna be the first year without Bill Belichick in
New England. Because I look at Belichick and I go
the guy. He looks like someone who has lost as fastball,
that wanted to do something really his way, and without
Tom Brady to clean up a lot of the things
that happen look at what's being laid out bear here.
(24:44):
Doesn't mean the guy's not a great coach, doesn't mean
he's not still a great coach. But is he this legendary,
you know, super Bowl every three years type of head coach.
I think we've seen the last couple of years. Maybe
Brady had a little bit more to do with that
than it was the coach, And so this is it.
He's desperate. That's why this story right here, we told
you a couple of weeks ago. If Belichick doesn't win
(25:06):
this year, it's a new coach in New England next year,
and it's something else they're trying to figure out. Because
that's how things end. And when you continue to have
stories like this where you have the general NFL public
scratching the head's going, you're a genius, and where you're
still trying to figure out your quarterback situation, you still
you still have Matt Joe. You tell all this, I'm
telling you, this is it. This is the year. That's
(25:27):
why it scares me about Lamar Jackson because and maybe
at some point it's like, well I gotta throw a
hail Mary because I need somebody in here to make plays.
And now I gotta worry about Lamar Jackson, the AFC
East and the Pages are gonna strike it big again
for the next couple of years. So it's so it's
crazy but it scares me. But at the same time, yeah,
this was it, and now people are just starting to
come around to the fact that hey man, this is
this is a a winner go home type year for
(25:49):
Belichick in New England. Well you had multiple parts to it, right, Belichick,
who defiantly it was like, we well check the last
twenty five years when asked about you know what the fans,
you know why the fan and should still feel they
can get it done, It's like, well, Brady's not walking
through that door unless he is. I don't know. Maybe
maybe that's the crazy He'll turn it all. No, I'm
(26:09):
just kidding. But the idea that Craft not only talked
about the meek Mill conversation but also did a bit
about the the winning and expectations. So he's put that
out into the universe as well. And this again goes
(26:29):
back to the separation of Belichick the coach versus the
the free agent arbiter and the guy making the decisions
to build his roster. Because once he gets him on
the field and you look at them for what they
are and you go, well, he really coached a ragtag
group of players. Problem is they don't need to be
(26:50):
that if he evaluates properly. Because he's spending the money,
he's just spending it poorly. He's the twenty twenty three
version of the Chicago Cubs for many any years? Did
you spend a lot of money? Damn right, we were
top five? What did you spend it on that guy
who was the cy Young Award winner fifteen years ago? Great?
You want to resign Greg Maddox. Nah, he hasn't done
(27:15):
anything here like him, and then he goes on to
become the greatest professor on the mound that we've seen.
But it's it's the hot seat, is there? Gerard Mayo
has already been allegedly tabbed as the man in waiting.
Guess what, he may not have to wait very long.
(27:36):
I mean it's got to be like a ten win
or more season and win a playoff game. That's kind
of I think that's what would save Belichick for Okay,
now they got it working again. We won ten games,
we made the playofs, we won a playoff game. All right, Okay,
now we're moving in the right direction. But that's what
it's gonna take. Win ten games to go home in
the first round of the playoffs. That might not even
be enough like that's it would have to be for Belichick.
(27:58):
Ten wins of the playoff win, that's what he's got
to reach this year. But here's the here's the problem, though, Jason,
is you don't get the four and two, five and one,
six and ozho automatic in the east that you once did.
Particularly if and when Rogers actually comes in now Zach
Wilson's still under center, then yeah, he's number two. Jumped
at nut to go past that? Is he going to
(28:19):
be the guy go past that? Zach Wilson's team until
it's not go past that? Twitter and about a fresca,
Mike and swold him. It is a win or go
home year for the Jabelichick Stop. Be sure to catch
live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon
weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific on Fox
(28:41):
Sports Radio and the iHeart Radio app. Well, it has
been some kind of Week one in Major League Baseball.
The big time pageantry of Opening Day in the pitch
clock so now the fact that Mets may never score again.
Joining us now on the hot line to break it
all down. MLB Network insider extraordinaire, Fox Sports Radio and
sider John Paul Morosi, JP, can you tell me the
(29:03):
Mets will score run eventually and I can be excited
about that. I believe, in honor of the song that
played us in from Break, their hopes are somewhere in
a black hole at the moment, so I had to
do that. I've been reminded of any number of motifs
(29:23):
from the nineteen nineties that I'm considering. Wow, that was
thirty years ago, guys, that was a long time ago.
But so here's what I'll say about the Mets. First
of all, the Brewers can play. They're playing a really
good Milwaukee team, But honestly, they haven't been competitive with Milwaukee,
which that's probably the more notable issue here, and I
(29:45):
think collectively Verlander being out is part of it. I
think maybe Alonso not quite being himself yet is also
part of it. Obviously, Diaz not being there hasn't had
much bearing on the last couple of days. They're just
disorganized at the moment, and if there's one saving grace
for them. It's that the Phillies are similarly disorganized. I
(30:08):
finally got their first win of the season tonight. Max
Freed is out for the Brave, So it's not as
though anybody else is really firing on all cylinders at
the moment. But I think overall there it is early.
It is early. As you know, Jason, Mets fans are
known for being very patient and measured in their assessments
of their own team, and so that that judiciousness will
(30:32):
and undoubtedly serve them very well in the days released
the hours ahead. Well, thank you, JP. I appreciate that
you made me feel really good about that, JP. So
looks obviously outside of that, you know, look the big
first week. We saw the big headline today Manny Machado
called out on strikes after you know, the pitch clock
(30:54):
violation and he gets thrown out of the game after that.
How has the overall implementation of the pitch club We've
had a week to look at it now scale a
one to ten. If one was, hey, this is terrible
and we really need to rethink this, and ten is
this is smooth. It's such a great addition. The games
are shorter. Where are you on the pitch clock right now,
(31:14):
I think we're at an eight. Candidly, I do when
you look at the big picture here, I don't think
we have seen an egregious miscarriage of what this is
supposed to be. Nor do I think that games have
decided have been decided by this. And let's let's remember
(31:35):
the big picture reason for doing this. It's it's because
fans prefer a crisper game. They prefer rhythm, they prefer
balls in play and everything moving at a good pace.
Fans like that is that has been demonstrated time and
again by surveys and just the overall opinion of what
(31:57):
we've heard. And at the end of the day, the
goal here is to have one hundred and sixty two
games season produce basically the righteous winners, the righteous teams
that are going to the postseason that over the big
one sixty two, that things should eventually unfold the way
(32:20):
that talent and execution, all those things add up to.
And so you're just hoping that you can have the good,
which is a better product, without the bad, which would
be distorting the outcome of games. And I really believe
that we have not seen the latter happen. Yet. Obviously,
Manny Machado, we all wanted to see him play nine
(32:42):
innings today and he didn't. And there was a first
inning issue with respect to him calling time right at
eight seconds and it not being granted in the strike
being assessed. My advice at this point is to not
let it be up to the umpire. The instruction is
be attentive to the pitcher at eight seconds, and Manny
(33:05):
was calling time out. I don't love it, obviously, I
would like to see Mannie stay in the game. We
want to see Mannie play. But at the end of
the day, this is the rule. We've decided that this
is something that is that is part of the game
now and we've got to adhere by it. And I
think it's up to Manny to adjustice batting gloves one
or two fewer times and be in the box and
(33:26):
be ready. I mean, it's it's not perfect. I get it.
I want to see Manny and not the umpire all
those things, but we are all now playing by the
same rules, and as MLB people have stressed throughout this process,
if you have a violation with the bases loaded in
Game seven of the World Series, it's going to get
called because that's the rule now, and to call it
(33:48):
sometimes and not others would would be selective justice and
not what we need right now. We need it to
be thorough fair, accountable, reliable, And Manny was a second
late calling time out and we saw it happened earlier today.
JP moving up and we'll stand in southern California. Look, Angels,
(34:09):
fans and team match are used to Anthony Rendon not
being in the lineup, but now it's because of an
altercation with a fan Shoeotani had just passed that area
and then Rendon gets into it, gets his suspension, so
he gets one game knocked off in the appeal. But
one of those circumstances beyond the rules adjustments, whenever we
(34:31):
have players and fan interactions, we start wringing our hands
over how this gets adjudicated and what you can do
to try to prevent stuff isolated or something major League
Baseball kind of has to be wary of. Well, we've
certainly seen the instances in the past where there's been
interactions between players and fans that have gone awry, and
(34:52):
unfortunately it's part of life, it's part of sports, as
part of a lot of things when emotions get heated.
I would point out that one of the more important
aspects of why Anthony's suspension was reduced from five to
four is that he actually talked to the fan. There
was a conversation afterward by phone in which there was
an apology made, and that Anthony's genuine contrition of just
(35:17):
being out of character in that moment I think saved
him a game, and I think allows the Angels to
move on a little more quickly, and I think the
sport as well. I would point out that there were
obviously thousands of fans of that game and all around
the major leagues that day, and that was the only
instance that that caught our attention, and obviously it would
(35:40):
day after day after day we see games and nothing
of this sort happened. I think it's I think it's
way early to say that it's any sort of a
trend or a or a present problem. I think it's
something that MLB is always aware of and the players
are too. And Anthony, I think made a really good
statement earlier today along the lines of knowing that hey,
(36:00):
he's a fan of other sports, he's a noted basketball fan,
and he says as as a player, I've been a fan.
I know what it's like to be a fan, and
as a player, I know that I can't do that,
and so I think it was a moment that was
out of character for him. I think that the larger
question for the Angels is they've got to get a
(36:22):
great start to this season, and being without Anthony for
your point, he's been out for with injuries. That's just
not helping them in their effort to convince Showe that
he needs to stay there. And that's what the season
is all about. Play well enough to ideally make the playoffs,
but at the very least validate the idea that Showe
(36:42):
wants to stay there a long term. And a moment
like that and sort of a lackluster start mediocre does
not help them in that most crucial endeavor. Hey, every
loss by the Angels, every loss by the Mets, is
another million dollars to add to Otani when the Mets
get him for August and September's look at it, because
(37:03):
at the rate they're going, they need both hitting and
pitching help. Jason, Hey, now, speaking hitting and pitching up,
you know you've had a lot of stuff on the Yankees.
The last couple weeks. You did the game last night,
got to talk to Anthony Rizzo to I told you
about wanting to put on a show at home for
the Yankee fans. What you've seen from the Yankees so
far in the first week trending up? Are their concerns.
(37:25):
Where are you on the Yankees right now? I'm bullish
on the Yankees. I think rotation wise, maybe still some
questions there, just based on the injuries they had during
spring training. But I like their bullpend depth. I think
that Clay Holmes being back and ready is really important,
and their lineup I think is really good. And for me,
we could talk about Judge. He sees unbelievable his first
(37:48):
inning of his first game with the season, he gets
home run to dead center field. He's unbelievable. But and
certainly Vulpi has gotten a lot of buzz as well.
But the two guys that I think are most important
right now this organization, at least among the position players,
are Lemayheugh and Torres. Torres got his Hunter Thom run
last night. I was really impressed by him in his
(38:10):
at bath when he is taking the ball out to
right field. He's a different hitter, and that lineup is
just that much deeper and harder to pitch to, and
and le Mayhew's health is a huge element. There's no
accident for me that when when DJ was hurt in
the playoff, they just weren't the same team. They barely
got by Cleveland, they were swept by Houston. He is
such a pro and he linkedins out that lineup in
(38:32):
a huge way, and honestly, it allows them to lessen
their burden and reliability on Josh Donaldson. It's just it's
a better team when DJ and Torres are playing like
they're playing right now, and when you add in Volpi
and that excitement, it's just it's a really really well
balanced team. They'll they'll get Harrison Bader back. I just
(38:52):
think that we're due to see some tremendous baseball this
year when the raising Yankees play. I know we don't
have quite the same amount of of in Division games
this year, but my goodness, how the Rays are pitching
it right now with Springs and everybody else, Rasmussen and McClanahan,
they're just a great pitching staff. And I think the
Yankees certainly have a line up to challenge with them
here this season. Yeah, Frostberg wants me to ask if
(39:15):
Altman is the greatest player ever. But I'm gonna stay
in the alleast start for James Altman. They're well done.
But yeah, predicting greatness for the Toronto Blue Jays may
now look out, you got you got the Orioles. They win. Now,
they're gonna bring up Grace and Rodriguez. The movement is
alive and well in Baltimore. It is. And I will
(39:35):
say the Jay's one tonight, so they're at least now
I think one game under five hundred, which which will
hopefully help my relationships with all my friends in Canada.
After I picked them to win the World Series and
they promptly lost three games in a row, I think
and I had to say, basically my fault, guys, I'm sorry,
but but you're right on Baltimore. I'm also bullish on them.
(39:59):
I think that the Orioles to have a really, really
good team. They're a group. It's going to get better
as the year goes along, because they've got Rodriguez coming
up imminently, as you mentioned, with his major league debut,
and one name that I think sometimes we don't talk
about enough. Is Ryan Mountcastle really good player, off to
an excellent start. We know about Rutchman, we know about
Mullins obviously, Henders and Anderson's a special talent too. Over
(40:20):
in the corner. They've got a nice team and and
I like that they made some good pickoffs. You know,
Irvin is a solid veteran in the rotation. Dean Kramer,
I like, you know, Bullpen was a little bit wobbly
at times in the first series of the year. But
I think this team's got a chance to really make
a lot of noise in the American leagues this year.
And Grace and Rodriguez is one of these guys that
(40:42):
if he's an eventual perennial All Star Cy Young candidate,
it's not going to surprise anybody because he is mature,
he is ready, and we've been waiting for this day
for a long time. You can fall him on Twitter
at John Morossi. That is at John Morossi, John Paul
of course, one of the three Brewers hitters to go
back to back to back off of Max Scherzer. Yeah,
(41:04):
there was the right range, there was Yeah, sure money
Garrett Mitchell, that group, all of you guys are doing
well and by the way, one of my easily a
top five favorite Morosi sporting event of the year coming
up this weekend, the Frozen Four. I'll be honest, I
didn't watch a minute of college hoops over the weekend.
(41:26):
Is too much baseball, but Frozen four coming up. Love it.
Michigan plays Quinnipiac and then a matchup of two of
the all time great college hockey titans, Minnesota Boston University
in the great hockey hotbed of Tampa, Florida to culminate
this season. I love it. Oh JP has always enjoyed that.
(41:46):
We'll talk to you next week, buddy, have fun, all
the best guys. Thank you much, Thanks a much,
