(00:47):
dot com the way tire buying should be. We're sitting
in for the guys tonight, Jason Smith and his best
friend Mike Carman. You want to be part of the show,
real simple air and underscore torres. I'm at stinkin Genius one.
By the way, towards you said you're going to the
Dodgers Mets game on Tuesday. Is that where you're going?
That is the plan? Yes, I gotta make my way
(01:08):
down and go see a Knicks playoff games. Tickets are
gonna be a little pricey. There'll be a little pricy.
Your wife has I'll have to go myself and your
wife win all these awards like best Saleswoman Northeast Region
or something. Every year she wins, she goes the President's Club,
and the company she works for takes a lot of
(01:32):
the employees on an exotic vacation and they get to
bring their spouse every year. No, yes, exactly. No, my
wife has been bringing her sister. This year, she's bringing
me And guess guess where the trip is going to
be this year? New Hampshire, Costa Rica. Nice? Look at
(01:54):
you all expense paid one week five stars resort in
Costa Rica and all the booze and food and everything
that you want to do. You, um, does she have
to work while you're there? You just get to wander
by your No? No, does. She has some meetings, but
it's it's just really just uh, you know, meet and
(02:15):
greeting and party and all that. I really don't feel
like going. Well it's in December. I really don't feel
like going, you know what I mean, gotta go? What
are you talking about? You don't feel like going, you
better go. If you don't go, the only reason I'm
going is because it's free. Well, that's that's the best
reason to go. Those are the best gags, are they not? Yeah,
(02:35):
of course you are every year and that's got to
be expensive when you got to take a couple hundred
employees to like Costa Rica or places like that. An
you have to go. I'm Costa Rican in December. It's
the best sweather. It's real, best sweather. I go. I
can't remember the name of the hotel, but it's like
the nicest five stars there. I know, I know, I'll
(02:59):
have to gotta find out. But seriously, best weather, best weather,
best time to go, and if it's free, it's also
the most expensive time to go because it's the holidays,
so everyone travels. If you can go for free, and
I'm telling you you're gonna look. It's the best time
to go because of the weather because it's a rainforest
and half the time it's raining. Not in December and January.
That's okay. Bye. I don't want to be taking a
hike and have some snake eating me. And no snake
(03:21):
is gonna eat you. You're gonna see sloths you're gonna
see monkeys. You're gonna see all these animals and they're
not gonna bother you. Here's the other thing. You could
also just stay at the resort and eat and drink
for free. Yes, yes, I don't think there's snakes in
the pool. An you're right about that. And do you
guys really think for one second Arnie cares about weather?
(03:44):
He lives in Vermont. Yeah, I know. If I wanted
to have nice weather, I just moved back to Los Angeles. Sure,
and be out there with please dies. Oh jeez. So
but by the way, I'm going away in May. I
gotta tell the bosses about that one. So where are
you going? Where are you going? I'm actually going to
the Bahamas. I've never been before and it's lifelong dreams.
(04:04):
So we're going. Maybe looked at you, maybe, Yeah, you're
gonna You're gonna be working one Saturday, whether you want
to or not. So wow, look at that. I mean
you must be. They must be paying you a lot
of money to be taking vacations to the Bahamas and
stuff like that. Work hard, play hard, aren't he You
know how that goes? No, I gotta make I do
want to make my way down to Madison Square Garden again,
(04:27):
and uh and go see a Knicks playoff game. Though
it is gonna be a little bit pricey on tickets,
so I gotta imagine a good seats probably gonna cost
you about two two hundred and fifty bucks or something
like that. So we'll see how much it costs. And
they go only five hours, only five hours to get
down there. Not only that, I mean, come on, that's
like going to Vegas. Right, La to Vegas is still
five hours? Oh man to Sayer got into an argument
(04:50):
about this the other night. I live in Pasadena, which
is east of La. Right, I can get there in
a little over three and a half hours. He can
shut up. I've left at six and I'm Vegas. I'm
in Vegas proper. I'm at the South Point, which is
about fifteen minutes from the strip, but it's Vegas. I'm
there by nine thirty. And de Segar was like, that's impossible,
(05:11):
and I'm like, I mean, I don't know, but I don't.
Here's the thing. If you lived in like Santa Monica,
you have to drive through downtown right to get I
cut out half an hour. So everybody says it's four hours.
So you cut out a half an hour, it's three
and a half hours. I'm not saying that I leave
(05:32):
my house at six am and I have my feet
up at the pool at by nine thirty. What I'm
saying is, I am I am reaching South Point, which
is the I guess it would be what the westernmost
part of Vegas. I can do it in three thirty
three forty five. That's all I'm trying to say. Ye
called me a liar here on six hundred station. Look
(05:54):
at that, No wonder you had to, no wonder, I
had to give him the night off. I mean, that
guy can't get along anymore. So I've been to the
Bahamas too. You're gonna have a place, yeah, yo, Or
we're going to the Atlantis, like the one with all
the water slides and everything. So ah, that's just unbelievable.
And you know what I'm not doing. Isa was one
of the places they well, that was one of the
(06:14):
places they took my wife, But she took her, she
took her. I did hear Jim Kelly did they have
a guitar? For those who missed it, Arnie's wife ended
up on a plane, a private plane with twelve NFL quarterbacks. Yes,
and somehow I think it was like Kelly Marino, Warren Moon. Um,
(06:35):
those were three that I remembered after. I have to
have her tell the Yeah, I'll have to have her
tell her the story. She she's probably left key details,
but that's okay. I'm sure. Yeah, I hate you, ty
tysher come up? Man? Yeah, what is this the the
(06:58):
baby Hour? Baby is the bonus Hour? The slide over
Baby Hour? Is not what they call it? Yeah, see
I pay attention. I listen to Jason and Mike. Is
that what they call they called the slide over Baby Hour.
I don't know what that means, but that's no idea
what that I mean. I'm afraid to ask. I just
pretend like I know what that means. All Right, we
(07:19):
have a lot to get to. Like I said, if
you want to be part of the show airon Underscore Taurus,
I'm in sticking Genius one. You'll get our picks coming
up in about forty five past the hour. A lot
of predictions. We should be getting to be a lot
of good series coming up, especially on Saturday. But I
kind of want to start it back when we did
an hour number one in case you're just joining us.
We talked a lot about Zion and of course, um,
(07:40):
I mean you think they could have used them tonight, Tares,
what do you think they end up losing to okayc
And they're certainly gonna have used the shot in the
arm somewhere. This really stems because Zion did an interview
and he said he's one hundred percent physically, but Zion
(08:01):
just is in Zion. So that you're not being sarcastic.
That was that quote. He said, Zion is in Zion.
So for whatever that is, you figure it out. That's
your own interpretation. Yet, before the game he was dunking
the basketball. Was he in like sweats or what was
(08:22):
he you know, team sweats. I'm not even sure what
he was. Worried by the way dunk. Yeah, really quick
shout out to M. L. Times who says, I live
in Arcadia, which is the next town over for me. Yes,
it takes three and a half hours to get to Vegas,
four hours to get to Circle which is on the
other side of town. Take that Steve to Segar doesn't
(08:44):
believe me. But anyway, back to Zion, No, so you know,
I mean, um, people wondering why, if he's okay physically,
why was he not out there? And is it something
mentally we brought up? Why couldn't you play five minutes,
ten minutes, pick up three fouls, four fouls, grab some rebounds,
grab some points they could have used him. What's going
(09:05):
on with this guy? What is happening? Nobody's questioning him, Aaron,
nobody's pointing the finger. Twitter's now in an outrage. I
don't understand why he's getting a pass. Is it because
he missed so many games? We just assume he's heard.
I don't understand what's going on here? You know, no,
And today it was the first time I ever saw
any real pushback on him. You can't do an interview
(09:28):
the day the playoffs start and say I'm one hundred
percent and it be okay. Now what I will say?
I thought Mark Medina last hour gave some great insight
the NBA Insider and he said, look, this isn't just
his ion thing. This is the Pelicans and their medical
staff thing making this decision as well. So you know,
I guess that the argument would be since he hasn't
(09:49):
played so wrong so long, he's got a ramp up
But here's my question. If he's one hundred percent, why
can't he You know two things, One do you wait
till you're one hundred percent to ramp up? And and
two on top of that, to your point, arn'tie nobody's
asking him to go out and play forty eight minutes.
But you can't give us ten. You can't give brandon
Ingram a break. You can't give um. You know CJ. McCollum,
(10:11):
who I know, plays a different position, but CJ. McCollum's
got to wrap around call him because as Mark Medina
said that, it's it's the team that's you know, um,
he made it sound like it's a team that's not
putting him out there. If I'm Zion, I'm gonna say
you better change your mind because i want to get
the hell out out there because I'm one hundred percent.
Who's making the call here? Is it Zion or is
(10:32):
it the team? Well? That and that's exactly it is.
I think you know, at a certain point as an athlete,
you got to stand up for yourself. Right. I use
this example all the time, is that you know it
can run counter two right where a pitcher is gonna
want to pitch and sometimes you gotta take the ball
from him. But it's the opposite in this case, is Zion,
you gotta sit there and say, I know you guys
(10:53):
are looking out for me, but if we lose this game,
I got six months to recover. And by the way,
this is a what's the right word, This is an injury.
It's a It's not a a knee or an achilles
or something where if you reinjure it you could be
out for whatever. It's a hamstring and if you repull
the hamstring, then you sit out for a little bit,
(11:15):
but you're gonna be off for four months anyway. And
so I will say I do think there is an
obligation to tell the doctors. And oh, by the way, Arnie,
if it is the team's choice and it's not your choice,
then don't go out there and say I'm one hundred percent.
But Zion's not feeling like Zion say I'm one hundred percent,
I'm ready to go. The team doctors are don't believe
(11:35):
that I'm ready or the team doctors well, like like,
if that is the reason, then let everybody know that.
But how do you know you're one hundred percent? You
obviously did some running, you did some shooting, you did
some weightlifting, and you said, okay, I'm back to one
hundred percent. I got to assume he did this with
the team functions at the team building and the team
was wild. They're like, you know, look, look, look got him.
(11:59):
He's looking good. He's jumping, he's scoring, he's doing all that.
I got to assume they were monitoring him. I I
don't loos then where the disconnect was, to be honest
with you there. So that's what I'm saying is if
if it isn't you, if it is the team, if
it is the team, doctor spent, say that, don't give
this halfhearted. Zion doesn't feel like one hundred percent of Zion,
(12:20):
So Zion's not gonna go just just say that. But
like when you sit there and say I'm one hundred
percent and you give no more context, and then we
see you dunking in the pregame, it's a bad look.
It's a bad look. And I know I've said this
a few times. I apologize for being redundant, but again,
you can't give us eight minutes. You can't give us
six minute. This is the playoffs. Like, I mean, how
(12:41):
many times, aren't he has a guy come back at
less than one hundred percent come off the bench, you
know Curry, I remember was coming off an injury last year.
He started the playoffs on the bench. You know whoever,
I can't think of another good example off top of
my head, but you can, you can. You can play
without being one hundred percent, and he said he was
one hundred percent. You trade him if you're the Pelicans
(13:02):
because of the sorry, And if you're the Lakers, would
you want him? Why? Why is it always the Lakers?
Why does it have to the Lakers? Well, I think
they have some pieces in some room, the white pieces. Nothing. Well,
they're not gonna get a lot of pieces for Zion,
I don't believe. But then you start with the Pelicans.
Would you would you want to keep him with the
sorry that he's going to be getting or what, knowing
(13:24):
he might not be on the quarter a lot? Would you?
I'm a serious question. Would you? Yes? I would want
to keep him, and I think I would too. We
can criticize him, but you know, I mean, listen the
one year where he was actually on the court. You know,
he was phenomenal. By the way, even this year he
was very limited, but when he played, he ever's twenty
(13:45):
six points in seven rebounds, in five and a half
assist per game. And maybe that's part of the frustration,
is that he's so talented that we're just disappointed we
can't see him more. I mean, he's such a unique player.
But it is a bad look. By the way, last
see or two seasons ago twenty twenty, twenty twenty one
average twenty seven points in sixty one minutes. But he
(14:07):
misses all of twenty one twenty two, and then this
year he's limited to twenty nine games. It's just a
bad look, man. It's a bad look when you've been
doing all that and then, oh, by the way, on
top of that, you come out the day the playoffs
start and say that you're one hundred percent. Just a
bad look overall. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten
pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and
(14:31):
the iHeart Radio app. All right, good you think everybody?
Of course, Aaron Torres, Arnie Span, you're in for the guys,
Jason Smith and his best friend Mike Harman. Wow, listen
to you yeah, pulling through this Wednesday, twelfth day of April.
Jason will be back tomorrow. I think he's doing this
show with the Sager, while Harmon still takes the rest
of the week off. Where's Harmony doing something fun or what?
(14:54):
I don't know. Who knows. He's on vacation and enjoying himself.
Everybody goes. Nobody brings much. You can't as a jew,
everyone everyone except for you, who has a free trip
to Costa Rican. All you're doing is complaining. I guess
you'd take more vacation than anybody. I know what, Yeah,
taking a vacation to the year, geez. I was. I
was in Houston for the final four working, was working.
(15:20):
Just because my team wins championships doesn't mean I don't want.
I hate that. You say that I was rooting against
you so bad. I really was. I didn't want I
didn't want Connecticut to win. I wanted you to lose
to Iona in the first round. The sad thing is,
I really do like Arizona. It's just unfortunate that they're
they're cursed by you. But now I gotta wait a
(15:40):
whole year, I know, just to lose in the second
round again. Maybe maybe maybe you'll make the second round
this time. Yesterday you and I were talking about the
Sunday ticket, one thing we didn't bring up, and I
guess somebody kind of brought this up and said this
could be a problem. YouTube TV is on roughly a
fifty to fifty three can delay ye regular TV, so
(16:04):
that's going to hurt the in game betting. Todd betting
is very big, it's very prominent right now. M What
did you say that it's gonna do it? No, I
saw Todd Furman bring it up this exact point yesterday.
What is going to happen? Because fifty three seconds is
just too late to be able to go ahead and
get a bet down if you do get in now.
(16:25):
You could do something at the end of the quarters,
at halftime obviously before the game, but a lot of
people do in game betting, and that's that's a big
part of a gambling right now, I don't I don't
know how they're going to go ahead and solve this
part of it, you know, Yeah, this is what Todd
Furman is exact quote, say goodbye to the micro betting
markets that every major sports book player is attempting to sell.
(16:46):
Wall Street for unlimited growth opportunities unless the latency issue
is addressed by all parties involved. Todd is at the
forefront of all things gambling, and what I would just
say is, it's exactly what you just said, is that
this is also part of the reason why I don't
want to get YouTube TV, is I I like, I
feel like everything's behind um when you you know, when
(17:09):
you want to switch channels, it's complicated. So I know
we talked a lot about this yesterday, but you have
to get up is otherwise you can't get the Sunday
package or you can't get the Red Zone channel. Suppose
the NFL network has its own red Zone channel. I
don't know. I'll figure. I know you're trying to sell
me on buying this all before ju first for this
(17:31):
six Yeah, but no, they got they got rid of
one of the red zone channels, the one with Andrew's cciliano.
Oh wow, Yeah, what about Chris Hansen. He's gonna be
the one that's left. He's gonna be They're gonna be
doing the red Zone channel, yes, but um not. I
don't believe Andrew's not gonna be doing it. So I
don't know what his job's gonna be just want to
(17:51):
watch right Zone. But if I can't, I can't. I
just I mean, I I I it's just hard for
me to wrap my head around. I mean, I know
we threw around the prices the other day, but like
you know, this is uh, you know, April, and there's
no games until September. So, um, it's gonna be an adjustment.
Though it's gonna be interesting. I don't know what to expect,
(18:13):
but it's gonna be an adjustment, just like it was
an adjustment having these Thursday games on UM, on Amazon
and all that stuff too. We used to talk about how, oh,
you know, you're the ravage fans priced out of the
Super Bowl, tred is priced out of the World Series.
Hell is the average fans is priced out of regular
season games. Now it seems like that's more and more expensive.
And this is something we talked about the other day,
(18:35):
is I don't think we're far from that. And you know,
I think with parking and food and tickets, well, and
how much how much did you say it's gonna cost
per month for the season? What was four hundred and
eighty nine dollars. There's a lot of money if you yeah,
after June sixth, and you wore a subscribe. We didn't subscribe.
(18:57):
And that's and that's you know, I understand that we
all of the NFL, and there's this insatiable appetite for
more football all the time. But there does become a
point where you can cross the bridge where fans just
say it's not worth it. It's just not enough. I mean,
you know, you're already paying two hundred whatever dollars a
month for cable, maybe a little bit more, maybe a
little bit less. So I guess in theory, even if
(19:19):
you cancel that, that's still an extra two hundred dollars. Yeah,
out of your well. I mean, so I'll give you
an example. Right now, I have a cable bundle with
internet blah blah blah from a competitor of YouTube TV.
It's like two hundred and twenty five bucks a month.
So now you're asking me to pay two hundred extra.
(19:39):
You know, I might be able to do it, and
it's a job responsibility for me. But how many people
that are fringe fans or how many people by the way,
how about this. You live in LA and you're a
RAMS fan, you really only care, you want you want
to watch everything. But if it's a difference of two
hundred fifty three hundred, four hundred bucks and you could
just watch the rams because they're on TV all the time,
(20:01):
then maybe you don't get direct TV Sunday a Sunday
ticket on YouTube TV. Excuse me. So, I do think
there's a point where I get that it's the NFL
and it's the king and it runs everything, but there
is a point where you can price out the average consumer.
And I wonder if the NFL is eventually about to
do that. And not to mention, if you have HBO
Max or Who's a Prime or this or that? I Netflix.
(20:27):
I know that some of them are not very expensive,
but they all add up. You know. Next thing, you know,
you're spendinking about three to four hundred dollars a month
just to get all your premium channels, your sports, all
that stuff out there. That's what I'm saying. Yeah, you
have to have the football right if you're because it's
it's I have to because it's my job. But again,
(20:49):
if you're an Atlanta Falcons fan and all of your
games are locally broadcast, do you have to spend four
hundred dollars to get every game. Now, some fans will,
but I don't think everybody is going to, you know
what I mean. No, I understand that if you're just
a home team guy, you don't have to get any
of it. You just go ahead and watch the home
games and you'll be good to go. But there's a
(21:09):
lot of people who obviously move and don't get their
home team, and they want to watch all seventeen games,
or they want to watch a red zone. I'm a
red zone guy. I have to watch I watch all
the games. I love. I love the red zone. I
can't watch a one game anymore. I have to watch
them all like that. You know, I can't go back now,
you know. It's it's so funny, like I am even
(21:32):
there in college football, like I can't just watch one
game at a time, And it must be my add
kicking in of being a millennial and uh, you know
time and all that stuff. But uh, it's crazy, like
even like during the final, like the NCAA tournament, when
we got down to just one game at a time
and there weren't multiple games, it was like I got
I was like getting bored. I was like I need
(21:54):
a second screen. So it's crazy. How we how we
live now as a society, is that because of fantasy football,
people want to watch the red zone. You know, oh
I gotta my guy's got to score and all that stuff.
You know. I just think it just allows us to
watch more than one game and flip around and do
all that kind of stuff. Well, I have to see
the inside the twenty, but they most of the time,
(22:16):
not most of time, but a lot of the times.
It's not always just inside the twenty either. They'll just
you know, they'll just throw it around the and go around.
I would I would do that for the preseason. They
don't even do that for for the preseason, for crying
out loud. What to allow you to flip around? They don't,
you know, give you the different games like that. That's
what I mean. Yeah, I'm just saying it's like, I
(22:37):
think that if the prices are as crazy as they say,
as you say, and there's no reason to think that
they won't be, there is a lot of consumers that
love football that that's just not going to be realistic
for them. And I I'm curious how that is handled. Well,
they'll go to a sports bar. You go to a
sports bar, then you got to spend money on on
(22:57):
eating food and beer and stuff like that. There you go.
So I just think I think the NFL is in
this belief of, hey, you know, anyone will pay anything
for our product, and I do think it gets to
a point where you just say, I can't afford that.
I just can't and U NFL. It's it's a slippery slope.
(23:19):
Let me just put it that way. Be sure to
catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike
harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven pm Pacific. By
the way, real quick on Twitter, Doug says seventy percent
of US citizens don't even watch the NFL. It's not
a big deal for the vast majority of us Regarding pricing.
I don't know, do we make a big deal because
of our business and we know that everybody loves the
(23:40):
NFL's like ninety nine percent of our listeners love the NFL.
But how many people regular people like the NFL. That's
what I've never thought. Well, I'm a little confused about
what Doug's trying to say. So seventy percent of people
don't even watch the NFL. But then he goes, it's
not a big deal for the vast majority. Oh like
basically saying, yeah, what about it about the thirty percent
(24:01):
of people that do love the NFL? Because I got
a tweet from Scottie, you aren't tagged on it. He said,
the NFL doesn't realize that this economy isn't getting any
better and consistently pushing prices up and availability down will
slowly kill the sport. Um. I don't know if killed
the sport is a little bit, you know much, But
I don't think it's that far off. I think, I I,
you know, listen, I have to see how this all works,
(24:23):
because you know, it sounds it sounds like a very
pricey endeavor on paper. Um and and so I don't know,
you know, I don't know, But I just think to
assume that people can just drop one more time. Would
you say, you said four hundred a month on YouTube
TV total still five hundred bucks. It's a lot of money, No,
(24:47):
it is. It is a lot of money. There's there's
no doubt about that. You know. The NBA, I said,
to this article, the NBA was worn. They were warning
the players and the teams that there's going to be
a recession and they better get their ducks in a
row because there could be some hard times coming ahead.
And that's also for the people that go to the games.
That people are not going to be spending money to
(25:08):
go to an NBA game, especially when these guys are
doing load management and you're gonna insult them when when
people are spending spending hard earned money to go to
these games. Aaron TV ratings are down. I listen, I'll
say this. I wouldn't pay for an NBA ticket. I mean,
if I had friends in town and they wanted to
go to a Lakers game, then yes I would. But
if it was like, yeah, like if it was like, oh, Lakers,
(25:30):
that's gonna cost you a fortune, by the way, yeah,
and it's like but if but if it's, hey, you know,
the Warriors are coming to town, well, like, you know,
I don't Steph Curry's thirty five years old. I don't
know if he's gonna play. I don't know if Kevin
Durant's gonna play for Phoenix, like and and I think
that's happening a lot, and I listen, I think it's
a huge issue for the NBA. I really do. Um
(25:53):
And like I think, you know, the last year or so.
It feels like people are starting to come out and
say it. But you can't just have your best players
just randomly not playing like it's just it's it's bad business.
It really is. Which window is closing faster for a championship?
Steph Curry or Lebron James? Lebron James, I would say,
I mean, Steve Kurry just won a championship last year.
(26:14):
So I don't think you can really say Lebron wanted
a couple of years ago, twenty twenty in a bubble,
no road games, and now do you make it everything
though they want it? But my point is, of course
there's a lot of there's a lot of talk about
Steve Kurr Leavy Golden State. Want to talk about them
maybe the owner selling the team and getting out of
the business. You've said that Steve leaving a few times.
(26:34):
Where is Steve Kerry leaving Golden State? I mean, have
is that really a thing? I don't know that I've
really I think he's going to retire, is what I'm guessing.
Would Steve Kerr would retire? Would just retire? I mean,
at fifty seven years old, what's it gonna retire to well,
you know, I mean, I'll be you know, Greg Popovich
(26:54):
is like seventy three. Oh but yeah, well you know,
do you want to be coaching to you? That all that?
I don't think Actually, yeah, I don't know. I haven't really.
I mean, I've heard the argument like when Steph Curry
and that group leaves, Steve Kerr could kind of go
out with them. But Steve Kerr's not going anywhere for
three or four years
