Speaker 4 (01:12):
On a Monday night before the holidays.
Speaker 5 (01:14):
Well, Arnie, I don't want to see it was hot
today one hundred and thirteen degree Winshill faxt. Wow, I
don't want to say it was hot one hundred and
thirteen degrees. Yeah. I saw a thief stealing hubcaps. He
was wearing oven mits.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
I'm hot.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
He's here all week. My friends try the veal. That
is crazy. Of course I was in Arizona, but one
hundred and thirteen. Man, I missed those days, so you
got to stay inside though little air conditioning.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
By the way, I'm a little crabby, by the way.
Speaker 5 (01:42):
You know why.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
I just want to start with this before we start
getting into sports.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
We have four hours. We have a lot of stuff
to get to. But I want to go ahead and
tell you. My kid call texts me today and I
found out that he upgraded his airline ticket from Chicago
to Fort Wayne, Indiana the first clo and of course
he put it on my credit card.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
I'm like, I'm like, what's wrong with you? The flight's
like forty five minutes long.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
You had to sit in first class for forty five minutes. Now,
the good side, it was only forty dollars, but should
I be mad at that, Bernie. I mean, come, I's
only in forty five minute flight.
Speaker 4 (02:17):
I mean, are you crazy or what?
Speaker 5 (02:19):
Oh? Let me think about it, thoughts over Hell, no kids,
big time, big time hockey player, man, you kidding me?
Big time goalie played hockey in D one. He's already
played professional hockey. What do you want? I'm sitting thirty
eighth row with all the plebeians when you don't even
get peanuts anymore.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
Man, He's like they offered me wine. They're champagne. I
got to forty five minute flight?
Speaker 4 (02:41):
How much well, how.
Speaker 5 (02:42):
Much time to have? You know, five six drinks? So
you got a finder. He's a hockey player, man.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
You know, last time he took my credit card, he
was studying in Italy and he rented out a luxury
a luxury sailboat for the weekend, like love him, and
like four or five girls went and another buddy of his.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
And I'm still paying that bill off that.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (03:07):
Okay, listen, I think you want to complain department that's
on the fourth floor. You don't want to hear about
my credit card experience. Okay, fine, I'll tell you, yes,
go ahead. Actually, I recently had all my credit card stolen.
I told the guy. Yeah, I told the g I'm
keeping your spin un less than my wife.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
I get.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
He's here all week, people trying to feel all right, partie.
We got a lot to get to. As I say,
the guys off tonight, Jason Smith and his best friend
Mike Carbon We got a busy show.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
Mark Medina is going to join us sixth hour.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
We'll have the Saga stop on by a plethra of
stuff to get to. So let's get right at it
as we start things off. And of course we're contractory
obligated to start things off with Damian Lillard.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Boy, I'm starting to get really burned down on this
whole thing.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
I hope it's not going to drag on for weeks
and weeks and weeks, and it seems like it's going
to the First thing I want to say is Dave Willard.
I have no problem with him wanting out of Portland.
He should want out of Portland. If he didn't want
out of Portland, I would question how much he wants
to win an NBA Championship, because the Portland trail Blazers
are not gonna go ahead win an NBA champions championship
and they're not gonna put enough people around him. Now,
(04:18):
the question is, I think it kind of sucks that
he says he wants to play for Miami and he
kind of he's trying to stronghold him in the sending
into Miami.
Speaker 4 (04:27):
If I'm Portland, I'm like, yeah, well that's great.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
We all want to go to Miami and all live
in Hawaii and stuff like that. But we're gonna send
you to whoever gives us the best deal. That's what
we owe our fans. That's what we owe our organization.
That's what we owe you know, the people that are
behind the Portland Trailblazers, we don't owe Damian Lillard anything.
That's the attitude I think they should be taken that.
(04:51):
I think they are gonna take that attitude.
Speaker 5 (04:52):
Bernie, Well, there's no question Joe cronin his mission in
Portland is to build a winner and not try to
create some human interest story. I realized that Damian Lillard
wants to go to Miami. Unfortunately, the Heat don't really
have a ton of draft capital, and even guys like
Tyler Hero and Duncan Robinson, I'm not so sure they
(05:13):
appeal to Portland's rebuild program. But be that as it may,
there are going to be teams. I know the Sixers
are interested. I know the Clippers are going to be interested.
And this guy's in a hurry. He's gonna get his
best deal now. I like Damian Lillard. I've covered the
NBA Summer League ten of the last twelve years, and
(05:34):
I remember back in twenty twelve, he was the sixth
player picked overall out of Weaver State and it really
hadn't seen him much, right, And that was a draft
that had Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd, Gilchrist and Bradley
Beal and Harrison Barnes, a lot of talent. So you
go to the summer league and this dude, skinny little
dude out of Weaver State is lighting it up and
he became a fan favorite in a media darling.
Speaker 4 (05:57):
Then he see out the team that did they beat
North care Line in.
Speaker 5 (06:00):
The n or State No, No Eliver State. Not, to
the best of my knowledge.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
I'm gonna double doll North Carolina.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
I think so, But I could be wrung off the
guy's double checked out, But go ahead, I don't know.
Speaker 5 (06:12):
I might have been on a flight to Fort winning
with your son if that, you know, having a few
cream dements. But but in all seriousness, yeah, So he
goes on to win Rookie of the Year. He gives
Portland eleven great years. The man tried, he really, I
mean back four years ago you're at Toronto, wanted he
had that dagger three pointer against against Oklahoma's city and
(06:33):
you know, that's really had. He kind of had his
coming of age. But be that as it may. He's
thirty three now, all of his personal goals are achieved.
He wants to win a championship. He can't blame him.
And the reason I think this is getting so much
attention is because it's making Lillar look like he's the
no content who wanted out. That's not fair. I think
Joe Cronin, in a perfect world a couple of years ago,
(06:54):
would have said, look, buddy, uh we we're probably not
gonna win a championship anytime soon. That's work something out.
It could have been more amicable as it were. Nothing.
It's not amicable. But it feels one sided because the
minute Lillard asked for the trade, it was Saturday morning,
about eleven am. If you're scoring at home, Joe Cordin said, yeah,
he didn't. He didn't. He didn't hesitate one bit. So
(07:17):
you know, right now you've got that game where teams
are gonna realize that they're going to try to get
Lillard as cheaply as they can, where by Portland wants
to get the best deal they can. Going back and right, frankly, frankly,
if teams don't screw this up, there are three teams
that really should go after Lillard pretty hard. Three teams
that should really go after Mark. The first one should
(07:37):
be the Heat. They've made no secret that they've coveted
Lillard for a long time. They were within striking distance
of getting back to another title. They reach the finals
in twenty twenty, they lose in Game seven of the
Eastern Conference Finals. Last year, they make it to the finals.
This year they lose to the Nuggets. Right, so, all
of a sudden, now you lose Gabe, Vincent and Max Strus.
You've got to replace those guys. Lillard could fill led
(08:00):
Bill the beginning of the week, Harden, you know that
he was the guard being talked about in connection with
the Sixers. Now he opts out, what a shock three
years in a row James Harden when he decides he
doesn't want to be there, he really doesn't want to
be there. That's true, unless it's a buffet. So the
long and the short of it is, Philly could use
a guy like Dame Lillard. And then you got the Clippers.
(08:21):
You know the Clippers, You got Kawhi Leonard, Paul George,
you got stars on the books. Lillard coming off a
great season. He's consistent, he's reliable. Yes, you'd be surrounding
him with injury prone players, but Lillard is that guy
in the mix year that's a difference maker and can
be you know, he could help you thread the needle
(08:42):
and get to the next level, whatever that next level
may be. So there should be teams, in my opinion,
chasing Dame Lillard pretty hard, all right.
Speaker 3 (08:49):
Two things, Berdy one nineteen ninety nine Weaver State bete
North Carolina in the NCAA start.
Speaker 4 (08:54):
Now, wow, So yeah, so I go back a little
bit there.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
But obviously Loward wasn't on that team, so I I
did remember that one. Dude, what about the Boston Celtics,
do they playing anything? I mean, I keep sitting hearing
that they're gonna want to keep Brown. They're gonna have
two guys with max contracts with Tatum and Brown. Is
Brown possibly up to be traded or no, not really,
that's not going to happen.
Speaker 5 (09:14):
Now that Marcus Smart is gone, I say nol and listen.
One of the I think under the radar winners of
free agency so far have been the Celtics because they
made a pretty damn deal, a good deal when they
got Christaps porzingis. All right, yes, you lose Marcus Smart.
That hurts. Defensive Player of the Year all nine years,
(09:35):
with the franchise, heartbeat of the organization, all the platitudes.
But if I'm being honest from a town standpoint, you
can make a case this is a talent upgrade. Right.
Porzingis a couple of years younger, He's a foot taller,
coming off the best season of his career, put up
career highs and points, assist field goal percentage. This is
a guy that's also a difference maker. So more importantly,
(09:57):
now you've got Jason Tatum, Jalen Brown. Persingis can also
hit threes from way down deep. That creates space, that
creates room for the other guys to operate. He's an
above average defender. He's a good rent protector. By the way,
I'm not Persinga's agents. I'm just calling it as I
see it. The bottom line is this, Boston's made their deal.
They didn't have to do a whole hell of a lot.
(10:18):
Beyond that, they'll find a way to keep Jalen Brown,
I believe at this point.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
But by the Wayward could go to any team, but
other than Philadelphia, He's not gonna win a championship. Only
if he goes to Philadelphia, well, he has a shot
at winning a championship. I don't believe if he goes
to Miami or Brooklyn or well, Boston possibly, but Miami
or Brooklyn, he's not gonna ever win a championship there.
Speaker 5 (10:38):
Well down Brooklyn. And I'm glad you brought up Brooklyn
because ironically Brooklyn may have the best draft capital and
the best talent with the package as it were to
give to I mean, they got all these first round picks.
Now you got the Ted Steppi in the room, member him,
remember that loading the Shorts owner of the Cleveland Calves
all those years ago he wanted to You can't stockpile,
you can't trade multiple bat picks, right back to back
(11:01):
to back to back, all that, right, So but Brooklyn
can maneuver, and there are ways to go around the
back door. So depending on how fast Portland wants to
rebuild now they got Scoot Henderson, depending how much of
a hurry they're in, you know, Brooklyn might actually be
willing to come up with the best deal. They probably
are able to come up with the best deal. But
(11:22):
that might be a real in eethma to Damian Lillary.
He might feel like he's going, you know, to basketball Siberia.
Sacramento used to be Basketball Siberia. Not at all Brooklyn, Brooklyn,
you know, great city, but basketball Siberia. So that these
are things you have to watch because the real storyline
here could take a turn if a Portland Miami deal
doesn't come together, and be careful what you wish for.
(11:43):
Dan could find himself in a situation worse than Portland.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
But now here's the big question, though, Bernie, he's going
to get what like two hundred and twenty million? Is
that what it is for the next four years, give
or take. I lost Cayut, But is he worth it?
He's what thirty three now, so he'll be what thirty six?
Thirty seven with the contract. Is he gonna be worth
it at that age? I'd bean Steph Curry, what's he
(12:07):
like thirty five and he gets still hoop it up
out there?
Speaker 5 (12:09):
What do you think, Well, a gun to my head,
he probably is worth it. He's got three or four
good years left in him in the right situation. He
can't help bringing a championship. And you don't know for
four years. I mean it's you know, like Jogi Barra said,
predicting the future. You know, making predictions is hard, especially
when it's about the future.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
So you don't know.
Speaker 5 (12:27):
He got to say healthy, he's get into his mid
thirties all that, But I would lean toward he is
worth it. And look, this is what you pay for
guys to star this. I mean, he's got a lot
of hardware, he's got a lot of accolades, everything, bought
a championship. He's a good guy in the locker room
as well. So I would say yes. And that's what
the market's gonna bear because he's got multiple people who
are gonna want him. And it's the old supply and
(12:48):
demand thing. There's real demand for a guy like Dame
Lillard and there's only one, Dame Lillard.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
Well, I mean, if if Miami's the front runner, why
is it gonna take weeks and weeks and weeks?
Speaker 4 (12:55):
What's going on? Why is it not going to be
done in the next day or two?
Speaker 5 (12:57):
Then why does Joke Croner need to rush He's gotta
got time out of Well, you say the next day
or two. You have to let this. This is a
process oriented en devor. Okay, I mean, but.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
Look what's been going on the up till that. People
are signing and trading like crazy within hours.
Speaker 5 (13:16):
You know, Yeah, but all those situations are a lot different. Okay,
Austin Reeves is always going to go back to the
you know, look, you get the deal. Most of those
were kind of slotted right on charted territor here. I
mean Friday, we didn't know three or four weeks ago, Lillard,
it was rumored I want out of my Portland. Then
three days what before the draft or something along the
(13:36):
lines in that timeline. Now we're committed to building a
winner here. Then all of a sudden boom on Saturday morning,
right out of left field, okay, officially won out. Joe
Cronin says, yes, well, you know it's a. It's a
fluid situation, So Joe Cronin has to step back now
and be If you watch how this guy operates, he
doesn't seem impetuous to me because anytime in the last
(13:56):
two years he could have given he could have done
them a solid and said it's probably time now. He
didn't do that, did he. So I think he's gonna
be very, very deliberate. Remember last year, at this time
we were certain that both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving
would not be on their respective teams. When the opening
day started the NBA, they were not only there, they
(14:17):
were there through the All Star breaking all the way
up to the trade deadline. Do I think that's gonna
happen with Damian Lillard.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
No?
Speaker 5 (14:22):
But do I think it's gonna happen anytime soon?
Speaker 3 (14:24):
No.
Speaker 5 (14:24):
I think you're gonna see this play out over days
and weeks until Joe Cronin gets the deal. And then
there's one final thing I've been told by Moles. I
trust that before any deal is consummated, they're gonna sit
down with Dame Lillard, the team that's about to pay
him two hundred and twenty million, and say, are you
okay with this talk to us, because if you're not,
we need to know now and that conversation has to
(14:45):
be had.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
He's Bertie Frado, a Morny Spanier win for the guy
as Jason Smith and his best friend Mike Carmen. And
it's all brought to you by Progressive Insurance, Progressive Bikes,
Buddling Easy the Affordable, get a multi policy discount by

protection in one plays bundlum Save at Progressive dot Com.
Now there's more going on than Damian Loward. What did
(15:08):
the Lakers do? I want to get into that a
little bit. I thought that was kind of interesting. I've
got my take on Reeves that me and Chris pank
were arguing about. We got some over unders on when
Bayama that I want to get to and people are
betting on it like crazy. All that coming up next
right here on Fox Sports our Radio.
Speaker 6 (15:29):

Speaker 3 (16:09):
Hi, good evening, everybody, Welcome back to the Tyreck dot
com studios. He's Bernie Fratto. I'm Arnie Spaniel. In for
the guys tonight. Of course, Jason Smith and his best
friend Mike Harmon, they were in for Dan Patrick.
Speaker 4 (16:22):
So technically we're kind of filling.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
In for Dan Patrick, then, aren't we, Bernie, I mean technically, so, Arnie, listen.
Speaker 5 (16:31):
I'm no high school dropout. I went to full six years.
But I can't. I can't think about abstract thought like that.
Speaker 3 (16:36):
Yeah, I got I gotta make myself, you know, feel good.
Speaker 4 (16:39):
So yeah, absolutely on that. That's Bernie Fratto.
Speaker 3 (16:42):
By the way, when by Yama, some numbers came out
on him. Very interesting and I know it's getting a
lot of play in Las Vegas are all over because
people are making a bit on him. What is the
And by the way, I saw the summer week I'm
watching the summer these games now and I watched some
of the earlier ones.
Speaker 4 (16:59):
I saw that.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
What Brandon Miller had eighteen points on five of eleven shooting,
but at one point he had six files in the
first half. He finished with seven fouls and six turnovers. Obviously,
you don't fall out of these Summer league games. But
numbers came in in can you.
Speaker 5 (17:17):
You're allowed ten fouls?
Speaker 4 (17:19):
Oh, get out of here.
Speaker 5 (17:21):
No, I've been covering the Summer League forever. You're allowed
ten files and it rarely happens, but it happens.
Speaker 3 (17:26):
Wow, Well, he had six in the first half. He
finished with seven fouls. When by Yama numbers came out, though, berdie,
what do we got with the win?
Speaker 4 (17:32):
By Yama numbers?
Speaker 5 (17:33):
So you got three major props for a wombin Yama
in his rookie season. Will he average more or less
than eight and a half rebounds a game, more or
less than two and a half blocks per game? But
the big one, how many points per game? Will he average?
So they opened up the line at seventeen and a
half points per game minus won forty. That's a heavy
(17:55):
favorite to do it, which means you'd have to put
up one hundred and forty dollars to win one hundred.
That was massively bet over quickly by very sharp people.
It got up to eighteen and a half and that's
where its settled, eighteen and a half minus one to ten.
We think it's a very good bet for multiple reasons.
First of all, the Spurs play with terrific pace under
(18:17):
Greg Popovich's system. They averaged one hundred and fifteen points
per game last year. Women Yana is gonna be the
focal point of the offense, and even back in the
day when they ran the offense through Tim Duncan his
rookie year, he averaged twenty one points per game. But
let's look at some recent rookie performances. So last year's
number one pick Paulo Benkaro, he averaged twenty points per game.
(18:40):
Three years ago, number one pick Anthony Edwards twenty points
per game. Even few years back, Zion was averaging twenty
two and a half points per game in only twenty
eight minutes per game. And he gets hurt all the time,
and the only rookie in recent years to not average
more than eighteen points per game was Kate Cunningham and
Detroit and even he yeah, average seventeen and a half
(19:01):
points per game, and he was injured a lot. So
if weibin Yama doesn't average more than eighteen and a
half points per game, something's wrong.
Speaker 3 (19:10):
Well let me ask because this first of all, there's
got to be some not limits, but some criteria to this.
I mean, he can't play one game, get hurt and
not play the rest of the season, and that counts
as a bet or doesn't count as a bet.
Speaker 4 (19:21):
But are ye, no, there are a minimum amount of
games that he has to play in.
Speaker 5 (19:24):
You have to read your rules where you place your bet.
Every sports book is different. Some people might say some
books might say, you know, fifty games. Some books might
say the entire season. You've got to read the rules.
But no, you're not going to get away with one game,
that's for sure.
Speaker 3 (19:39):
Okay, so but mostly it is probably gonna have to
be like a half a season.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
Aren't they all usually the same?
Speaker 2 (19:44):
Or no?
Speaker 4 (19:45):
They very in big No.
Speaker 5 (19:46):
They very great. To give you an example, the over
under in Major League Baseball wins greatly varies by book.
Two years ago or last year. I think the over
under on the Dodgers was one four and one book
had it as low as ninety nine. And so you
shop around because if you want to bet the under,
(20:07):
you go to the book that has the highest total,
and if you want to bet the over, you go
to the book that has the lowest total. So you know,
every book has different rules in terms of how they
pay bets, when they pay bets, how it's great at
his action, no action, and certainly in the criteria, and
you know, you know we probably looked that up and
give you an example. But I can say it's going
to probably be at least fifty games or maybe a
(20:28):
number shot on ten something. There's gonna be some point
of demarcation.
Speaker 4 (20:31):
Now, Bertie, I'm gonna put you in this group.
Speaker 3 (20:33):
You and Chris Plank and all the media people tell
me how great one. But Yama is the best thing
since sizes bread. People say, the best thing in the
history of team sports. And he's gonna do this, and
he's gonna do that. And of course I saw the
video of him shooting around from outside not making anything.
I think I can outshoot him from three point range. Look,
I know the kid's got talent, but you know, maybe
(20:56):
that's too many points a game. Maybe the others the
way to go here, I mean, is he going to
come in and dominate like that? Is he really that
great where he's going to dominate in the NBA.
Speaker 5 (21:07):
There's no way of knowing. He could have a very
good career and maybe win one championship or no championships.
But the way he's being compared to the all time greats,
he's already in that. You know, the preseason Hall of
Fame for grow. He did play one G League game
here in Las Vegas for the Ignite here about ten
minutes from where I live, last December. I think it
(21:27):
was he scored like thirty six points. Wow. G League
game is like twenty percent of an NBA game. Look,
here's what about the in France. Yet played the good
league in France, he evers twenty one points a game.
It's a physical league, it's a talented league.
Speaker 4 (21:39):
So I can't be like sixth man there in France.
It's not that the type of league then, right.
Speaker 5 (21:43):
I think you'd probably start as long as you're drained
threes and you know you can fight through picks. I
think you'd probably start. Let's go back to the reality though. Yeah,
in the history of the NBA, there have been seven
players seven foot five. Only one in the history of
the NBA of any players that were seven to five
average ten points a game. That was young me. Now
(22:04):
my saying, Okay, to all the people out there that
selectively listen, listen closely. I'm not predicting that's gonna happen
to womm Yama.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
What I don't know.
Speaker 5 (22:13):
Is this is that is the human body made if
you're seven foot five or actually seven three and a.
Speaker 4 (22:19):
Half and a half.
Speaker 5 (22:20):
Right, yeah, right, he's been fudging you know. So in
all seriousness, can you run up and down ninety four
feet on a hardwood floor eighty two nights a year.
Stop start, you know you're you're you're gonna get pounded
on a little bit. You're gonna get he even in
this man's NBA, there's some physical you know, physicality. So
(22:40):
all of a sudden, now the position is gonna play
and where he's gonna be on the floor. He's a
good laying runner, he's very athletic, But can the human
body hold up up and down the floor ninety four
feet eighty two nights a year, stop, start up, down,
back and forth, defend, you know, physical punishment, that type
of thing. We don't know. You just don't know. Look
(23:02):
what happened at you.
Speaker 4 (23:03):
He's not good.
Speaker 3 (23:04):
If he's going to be like the next Lebron or
something he should be able to do with then right,
I mean he should be able to dominate. He should
have over eight and a half rebounds and over eighteen points.
Speaker 5 (23:13):
I think he's going under eight and a half rebounds.
Why and that, and the pros are betting under on
the rebounds. So look, it's funny you mentioned Lebron. Here's
one of the reasons I punt really pumped the brakes.
Has anybody really seen this guy play? He's really the
most type guy. Lebron was on the cover of Sports
Illustrated twenty years ago as a Chosen One. Now I
was living in Michigan. There I was with CBS Radio.
I took the two hour drive to Cleveland. One night
(23:35):
Lebron was playing, you know, played for the high school
Saint vincentin Mary's. I got to see this guy play.
So I went to a game and I walk on
the you know into the arena and I look at
him and I go, oh my god. First note, First thing,
I noticed. This guy's built like a linebacker. Yes, he's big,
he's sick, right, Okay, he's got an NBA body. He's
bringing the ball up the floor. He's got guard skills,
he's got great handles, he's got really good vision, and
(23:58):
he's unselfish. He's just drivening the ball to his teammates.
He's playing within the framework of the game. He's playing
like a point guard. And I say to myself, you
know what, I actually think you could put this guy
in an NBA game, he'd be okay, Well, guess what
he was For the most part, he hasn't had a
major injury in twenty years. If you're telling me you
can project, would you bet a finger that wem Ben
(24:19):
Yama is going to ten years from now be you know,
injury free? No, Cliff the tiger Woods syndrome, all right.
Nineteen ninety nine, I was covering a tournament in Dearborn,
Michigan at the tpc A senior event, and Jack Nicholas
was there, and actually, no, I'll take it back. It
was ninety seven. I'll tell you why. Tiger had just
(24:40):
won the Masters by seventeen strokes or whatever it was.
And Jack took some questions, and there was only a
few of us almost never asked questions. I said, Jack,
is Tiger going to break all your records? He says, yeah,
but he still got to do it. I want to
see what his life looks like when he's been married,
has kids, and has his first major injury or surgery.
Well ten years later to the month, look what happened. Yeah,
(25:02):
and Tiger had a hell of a career, but he
didn't catch Jack. So is women Yama likely to have
a stellar career? Yeah, but he's still got to do it.
And if it doesn't include championships, then there's going to
be an asterisk. If you don't believe me, just asked
Charles Barkley.
Speaker 3 (25:20):
Okay, and by the way, Bertie went's the last time
you looked at your tires?
Speaker 4 (25:23):
And no, I mean really a close inspection.
Speaker 3 (25:25):

drivers take a longer time to take a look at it,

Dog Event. But first let's see what's dread they we
check in with our buddy Steve the SAFT.
Speaker 4 (26:32):
He's going on to sa.
Speaker 7 (26:34):
Hello, Arnie and a great pull on the Weber State
success in the NCAA tournament back in the nineties. Very impressive.
I do remember when Damian Lillard was at Weaber State
his senior year because he was twenty five points a
game and they made their conference final on a Saturday night.
I was hoping they would win get to see Lillard
in the NCAA tournament and they got killed. And I
(26:54):
looked it up and turned out and he played four
years at Weber State. They never made the NCAA tournament
with him, and they had some good conference records too.
Speaker 4 (27:02):
I remember that either that was a long time ago, man.
Speaker 7 (27:05):
Yeah, I think Michigan State also, I read in the
nineteen nineties and North Carolina Weab State did before, long
before Lillard ever got there. You guys mentioned chet Holmgren.
He is playing in the Summer League as we speak
at Utah. They're up twenty on the Jazz going to
the fourth quarter. Chet Holmgren thirteen points, five rebounds, and
three blocks as well. First rounder for Charlotte, Brandon Miller
(27:27):
had an awful first half, finished with eighteen points six turnovers.
They got killed by the Spurs, and tonight's Sacramento opener
of the Summer League had the Heat rip the Lakers,
as first rounder Jim hawk Is of the Heat twenty
two points, in twenty two minutes. The Vegas Summer League
starts on Friday, but they are games this week in
Salt Lake City and Sacramento. The Minnesota Timberwolves gave Anthony
(27:48):
Edwards a five year MAX extension. Center Mason Plumley re
signed with the Clippers a one year deal. Milwaukee gave
Malik Beasley a one year contract. Venus Williams lost their
first round match at Wimbledon in straight Sophia Kennon of
the US eliminated Number seven Cocoa Golf. Former Arizona Cardinals
head coach Vince Tobin died at the age of seventy nine.
(28:08):
To Major League Baseball in Progress, It's on FS one
Padres leading three to nothing on the Angels after three innings,
a three run homer from Xander Bogart's starting pitcher for
the Pods tonight, Blake Snell was named NL Pitcher of
the Month. Today, the Padres have lost seven of their
last eight games. The Twins are leading six to three
over the Royals in the bottom of the eighth Now,
(28:30):
the Twins were tied for first in the Al Central
with the Cleveland Guardians coming into tonight. Cleveland has lost
Atlanta beat him four to two. The Braves have won
nine in a row, still a tie for first in
the NL Central, as both the Brewers and Reds have won.
Houston today got two runs top of the ninth to
win twelve eleven at Texas. In the AL West. Rangers
(28:52):
still first place, but now just three games over Houston.
Miami beats Saint Louis five to four as the Cardinals
left ten men on base. The Marlins Lisa Riyahs went
one for four. He's batting a mere three eighty eight
now and the Domingo Herman start was tonight in the
Yankees rotation, The guy who pitched a perfect game last
week tonight back to his old ways in four and
(29:12):
to a third at as he allowed two earned runs
and nine hits. Yankees were down three nothing to Baltimore
in the fifth, Yanks came back for a win six.
Speaker 4 (29:21):
To three with to back no back to back no hitters.
Speaker 7 (29:25):
Once again, the unbreakable baseball record stays unbreakable because, as
it is pointed out, in order to break the record,
you would have to pitch three no hitters in a row,
topping his two straight many decades ago. Uh I mentioned
the Orioles lost. Adleie Rushman did have three hits, and
the O's catcher says he will be in next week's
home run derby. Fox TV will have the All Star
(29:47):
Game from Seattle a week from tomorrow, and the full
rosters came out yesterday. They include eight Atlanta Braves who
do nothing but win, nothing but homer and in fact,
in the last twenty games, this is now fifty four
home runs for the Braves. Ronald of Kunya fortieth stolen base,
so not only over twenty homers and over fifty RBIs,
(30:07):
he has forty steals already this season. This is ridiculous.
The late game has the Pirates up on the Dodgers
one nothing bottom of the second though, Vince Coleman, slow
down there, that's right. But for this era, yes, for
this era. Yeah, he's no Ricky Henderson, I guess. But
Clayton Kershaw is not starting tonight and won't be at
the All Star Game sore shoulder. He officially goes on
(30:27):
the IL tonight.
Speaker 3 (30:28):
Back to you, all right, thanks well, Steve, of course,
Bernie Fratto, Arnie Spanier in for the guys, Jason Smith
and his best friend Mike Harmon. They worked earlier today
on a busy Monday, third day of July. I hope
everybody is joying your Fourth of July holidays out there.
Speaker 4 (30:43):
And there's really when you.
Speaker 3 (30:45):
Talk about Fourth of July, Bernie, you're talking about the
Nathan's Hot Dog event, of which I love.
Speaker 4 (30:50):
If I wasn't working, I would make the drive down there.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
It's only about what a four and a half hour
drive for a five hour drive form where I am
go down, have some dogs, watch the event, some fun
they get.
Speaker 4 (31:01):
Like what thirty.
Speaker 5 (31:02):
Thousand thousand people in attendance?
Speaker 4 (31:04):
That's crazy. It seems like there's more than that.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
I would I guess like one hundred thousand. It seems
like it's packed out there. Nd where do you stay
about that? You like it, you watch it, you enjoy it,
you have fun, you don't care. Where were you on that?
Speaker 5 (31:15):
Oh? Come on, man, this is a spectacle of the
highest order. Of course, you know I love it. Thirty
thousand people can't be wrong. There'll be millions watch on TV.
They'll actually sell three thousand Nathan's hot dogs. So those
in attendants, but of course the big name Joey Chestnut,
the bat Ruth, the Johnny Vandermuir, the Arnie Spaniard of
the whole event. I mean, this guy, he's not someone
(31:38):
to be messed with. It's not just hot dogs, right,
he has twenty four world records other eating things. I'll
get to that in a minute. But of course you
can bet this as well. Right, So the bottom line
is this, what do you do in this event? Because
he's such an odds on favorite to win and he's
minus five thousand, basically means for every five hundred dollars
you put up, you win ten. So how do you
(31:59):
bet thing? Well, if you watched last year, he only
I say only in air quotes sixty three hot dogs,
down from his seventy six record in twenty twenty two,
and you get the picture.
Speaker 4 (32:12):
Why was that though?
Speaker 5 (32:12):
Was it? I remember it was this crues man. He
was one lagers on crutches, right.
Speaker 4 (32:18):
I didn't know that affects your eating though.
Speaker 5 (32:19):
I'm sorry, Well, period most because the numbers don't lie
that much.
Speaker 4 (32:23):
But yeah, the injury.
Speaker 5 (32:24):
He still he wrote, Hey, you know this is serious businesses.
These are real athletes here for crime, like Dylan bowlers
a real athletes, you know, So look what you do
is the two things you can bet on that I
think makes sense. Are one will he uh break the
world record again this year? And the odds are you know,
(32:44):
decidedly you know that he will not because a couple
things believe it or not. So let me ask you
a question. This is a common sense question. If it's
hot and humid and it's sticky and muggy, or it's
nice and and fifty degrees, which do you think is
more conducive to eating?
Speaker 3 (33:03):
I would take it nice and cool and fifty to
you talk weather, right, it's not even that cold. It's
not it's not warm out here. It's nice, cool breeze.
I think it's perfect hot dog eating weather if there's
such a thing.
Speaker 5 (33:14):
Well, of course, and people are gonna say, well, burn
you idiot. It's July fourth and Brooklyn. You really think
it's gonna be cool and breezy. No, But the temperature
and the humidity can vary from year to year, right,
we obviously know that, you know, we weather changes, but
I'm hearing it's going to be very hot and very humid,
and due to some recent events, well, the air quality
(33:36):
is not necessarily great there this year. So these things
can all affect their performance. There's no question. And so
the over under is seventy three and a half hot
dogs minus two to eighty that he goes under, but
you can get plus money that he goes over. I
think over Yeah, well, I don't think i'd take you over.
And okay, he went just that when like six or
(33:59):
seven years where he ate seventy hot dogs or more,
and he fell off to sixty three last year. So
I think it's gonna be motivated to get back to
seventy so he can get his man card back. But
I don't know that he's gonna be motivated to get
back to seventy four. That's gonna be a tall order.
And like I said, it's gonna be hot and humid,
and it's gonna be a situation where you know, the
(34:22):
air quality is not great. Now, the other thing you
can bet is rather not a new world record is broken,
and that's you know, he'd have to get to seventy
seven hot dogs and I don't see that happening. So
there are plenty of other you know, Mickey Soudo, you
know you've had on your show, and for what there
are some head to head matchups, and she's matched up
against a guy named John Weary, so her over runders
(34:44):
like forty three and a half and she's trying to beat.
Speaker 4 (34:47):
She's a big favorite too for the webens, a.
Speaker 5 (34:49):
Huge, huge favorite. She should win again. And like I said,
there's even a head to head prop bet.
Speaker 3 (34:54):
Let's say I was gonna say, so we save that
because we got a lot more time for the Nathan's
hot Dog event. We'll go through some of the other
contestants and some of the records besides the hot dog
stuff that I mean, you would be just mind boggling
on what they'll eat and what they do for competitive eating,
So we'll go through all that. Coming up next though,
our favorite subject every fourth of July, it's the Bobby
(35:16):
Benia contract and what you might not know about the
Bobby Benia contract.
Speaker 4 (35:21):
Bernie's gonna tell you.
Speaker 3 (35:22):
By the way, at the end of your first year

Speaker 4 (35:33):
Slast match.
Speaker 3 (35:34):
We'll come on back. We'll tell you what you didn't
know about Bobby Benia's contract. That's next right here on
Fox Sports or Radio.
Speaker 2 (35:41):

(36:02):

Speaker 3 (36:05):
Trying to keep up on it, Bernie, So we'll try
to get to some tweets in a little bit. But
Bobby Bedilla day. We hear about this every fourth of July.
We know about the one point one three million?
Speaker 4 (36:16):
Is that what it is, Bernie?
Speaker 3 (36:16):
Or one point three million I believe he gets from
the Mets every year. But what don't we know about
the contract? Because what I don't understand is in two
year two thousand, the Mets only owed him less than
six million dollars five point nine million, and they decide
to pay him what one point one million for the
next twenty five years with eight percent interest? That sounds
(36:39):
like a good deal for Bobby Vinie.
Speaker 8 (36:41):
If you're asking me, you know, well, so the number
if you're scoring at home, one million one hundred and
ninety three thousand, two hundred and forty eight dollars and
twenty cents.
Speaker 5 (36:51):
Can't forget the twenty cents, sorry, you can. So the
thing that makes you such a novelty is Venia hasn't
played for the Mets since you know, Clinton was president
from Krann out Loud, and he's going to be seventy
two years old when this when this ends in two
thousand and thirty five. So they released Vinia. They offered
for two.
Speaker 4 (37:06):
Thousand and thirty five. Wow, that's crazy.
Speaker 5 (37:09):
Yeah, So you know they he was owed like six
million dollars and they go to release him and they
were gonna just give him a buy out, and somehow
they managed to negotiate this deferred payment. It's like if
somebody came to you and me and Arnie and said
we'll give you six million dollars today, or if you
just wait ten years, just wait ten or eleven years,
(37:30):
we'll give you a million two for the next twenty
five years. So instead of six million, you get like
twenty eight million or thirty three million or something like that.
So Benia took it, and it's become fodder every year.
Even though Steve Colan kind of embraces it. But here's
the kicker. The Mets are not the only team paying
Bobby Benia.
Speaker 4 (37:50):
From other teams.
Speaker 5 (37:51):
He's getting money from the Orioles, who also pay him
five hundred grand a year and for twenty five years.
That didn't start till two four, so that's gonna run
through twenty twenty nine.
Speaker 4 (38:03):
Oh my goodness.
Speaker 3 (38:04):
So he's getting like one point six million, what points
up a million a year.
Speaker 5 (38:07):
Now, it's good to work if you can get it.
But yes, listen, Bania is Benina gets all the love,
but he didn't even invent this. Brett. The truth of
the matter is Brett Saberhagen. He's getting two hundred and
fifty grand a year from the Mets for twenty five years.
That also started in four. And you know, Benia, it
was kind of the inspiration for Berni to think about
(38:28):
this because saber Haagen announced he was gonna do it.
And the Mets are not only paying Bania and Saberhagen,
they're paying Robinson Cano. And listen, some of these guys,
do you remember the glory days of Chris Flexen or
Darren Ruff or Tommy Hunter that these guys really even
playing the big leagues. I pride myself on no one's
there or too. James McCann him, I remember, he's a catcher.
(38:50):
The Mets are paying like fifty million dollars to guys
aren't even playing anymore.
Speaker 3 (38:54):
But again, the Mets are playing out fifty million dollars
the guys that aren't played.
Speaker 4 (38:58):
That's crazy total total.
Speaker 5 (39:00):
And you add up there there's ten or eleven players.
It's all there. People can google it. But here's the
other kicker. So Bobby Benia gets all the love for
getting this deal when other players are getting it. But
the other thing, too, is Arnie, is the Mets aren't
the only team that look like suckers here. Max Schurzer
is going to get another one hundred million dollars from
the Nationals that's going to be paid out through twenty
(39:21):
twenty eight. You didn't pay for them anymore. Manny Ramirez
is still another twenty four million dollars from Boston that'll
be up in a couple of years. Tom Grafe Junior
has been getting three point six million a year for
the past nine years. That finally ends next year. Todd
Helton he gets a Mayon three that finally ends this year,
(39:42):
he deferred thirteen million. So these are not small numbers.
It's not just the Mets, and it's not just Bobby Bania.
Everybody's joined the party here. So this is you know,
next year.
Speaker 4 (39:53):
Will Why did the Mets do this?
Speaker 3 (39:54):
What? What?
Speaker 4 (39:55):
What?
Speaker 5 (39:55):
What?
Speaker 3 (39:56):
Back in two thousand what made them think of this? Oh,
was that the Bernie made Off.
Speaker 5 (39:59):
That was the Bernie Madoff. They figured they yeah, so
that well, listen, this isn't probably one of the mets
finer moments. And they're owned by Fred Wilpon, who's who's
a legendary University of Michigan alum and a benefactor to
the University of Michigan. He built their baseball stadium, He
remodeled their baseball stadium back in two thousand and seven,
Fisher Field. Look, they were they had some kind of
(40:21):
investment with Madeoff. That was they thought they were going
to get ten percent returns and they were going to
make a significant profit. And so rather than pay pay
that money out, six million deferred ten years. And they
believed they would have turned that six million, you know,
figured out in math and compound interest, six million within
ten years would have been you know, thirty forty million,
(40:43):
and they'd give Bobby Venia twenty five and you come
out look like a genius. Well not so much, because
because madeoff went the Leonard Toast route and Bobby Venia
got his money. And next July first, we'll be talking
about the same thing all over again.
Speaker 4 (40:56):
Good my through the contract. Who was it the owners
of the ABA Saint Louis team?
Speaker 5 (41:02):
Is that Oello Spirits?
Speaker 3 (41:03):
Oh my good we don't have time for Barnes. Oh
my goodness, Marvin remember him. But the owners were getting
money from the NBA owners for years and years for
a long time.
Speaker 4 (41:14):
I mean it was insane.
Speaker 5 (41:15):
It was up forgot an research Cecil Fielders contract or
set Princefielders. Yeah that worse. Wow?
Speaker 3 (41:22):
All right, well thanks a lot, prety our one that
just flew on. By my goodness. I'm coming up at about
twenty past the hour, mark Medena is gonna ahead and
stop on Bible, go through winners and losers of what's
been signed so far in the NBA.
Speaker 4 (41:34):
We'll take a look at that.
Speaker 3 (41:36):
Skip Bayless may have a new co host, actually two
new co hosts. Will tell you about that, and we
got more on Nathan's it's a big thing to bet
on so all that's coming up next right here on
Fox Sports Radio
