u At you are a basketball purist. I could already
tell you are upset at the broadcast of Wemby's debut.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
They're spending too much time talking about Victor Webban. You
want to hear about some of the other guys on
the floor.
Speaker 4 (01:03):
Jason, remember last night when you were gushing over me
because I brought the Mets nothing but good luck.
Speaker 5 (01:11):
It's like that, but times a thousand, Like, we get it.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
He's the number one pick, he's seven foot four, He's
been waiting for this moment his whole life.
Speaker 5 (01:19):
You know who has literally been waiting for this moment.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
Their whole life.
Speaker 5 (01:21):
Every other guy on the floor like it's.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
It's you know, they're either rookies or they're guys who
have never been on a stage this good, because if
they were good, they wouldn't be playing Summer League.
Speaker 5 (01:31):
So I get it. He's the star of the show.
Speaker 4 (01:33):
But as our our brilliant producer Justin Frossberg just said,
we know about when Binyamo, like we don't need you know,
we don't need the gushing narrative about when he was
three years old and he overcame losing to his grandpa
in the in the in the driveway, Like, I don't know,
I I'm excited to watch him. I didn't know that
(01:58):
it was. I didn't need the the you know, the
lifelong narrative from him. It's it's a little exhausting, but
it's okay.
Speaker 5 (02:03):
It's okay, though that.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
That seat is affecting it.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
Usually it's Harmon who starts to show and he's really
upset about something and really mad and negative, and it's like.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Wow, what is happening, dude? It's Wenby. Man.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
We've been waiting for this ever since Britney Spears decided
to go say hi to Webbin.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Yam all right? Well before that have we been waiting
for Wenby for a long time?
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Let me let me put you this way. Say you
and I are at a party. Okay, say you and
I are party? Hey, Jason, what's going to?
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Hey?
Speaker 1 (02:27):
How?
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Oh my god, dude, do I have a great story
for you?
Speaker 1 (02:30):
What? And I say something like, hey, you know that
uh Frostburg and Ty Shirt got arrested, right?
Speaker 3 (02:36):
What happened? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (02:36):
You didn't. You're still when you still that mailboxer?
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Yeah, borrowed it and returned it. Okay, the statue limitations.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
And you didn't hear what happened? Oh my god, you
didn't hear what happened after after work that night? Oh
my goodness.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
And I start telling you a crazy story about how
tay Shirt was really loopy because he hasn't had protein
in like eight years, and he started throwing punches at
at at nobody and it was really weird. And Frostburg
tried to take him to the car, and then tight
Shirt threw him in the trunk and he went driving.
He got chased on the freeway by the police and
he pulled over and he threw Frostburg out and he
rolled up. I mean, you're into this story, right, you're
(03:09):
into this story.
Speaker 5 (03:10):
It was definitely the shrooms, Jason.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
But if I come over to you and go, hey,
I would tell you about the two people I know
that got arrested.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
You go, no, what, Oh these two people.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
I mean, you don't know them, but they're friends of
mine and I know them for a while, and and
and something happened in one of them.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
They got in a fight with each other.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
After like four seconds, you're going, oh, yeah, I got
I gotta look somebody else. I gotta go talk to
somebody else. He's telling me the story about somebody. I
have no idea who these people are. I really really
can't care. But if I talked about somebody you know
and somebody you're interested. Yeah, you're into the story, especially
because you could see that happening with Titian and he
could lose it like that at a moment's notice.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
So if I came up to you, Jason, I said,
let me tell you this crazy story. It's incredible. You're
going to believe in life the way that you never
have before. Okay, it's about a guy. His name's Michael Jordan.
Did you know he got cut from his high school
freshman team and he overcame all of that to turn
into the greatest player in the history of basketball.
Speaker 5 (04:05):
But yeah, I heard that story like thirty seven.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Wait wait, you got cut from his high school? No,
we didn't.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
Okay, so so you didn't know that story. But everybody
that I know you know but.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
That, but that didn't happen. Well, next thing you're going
to tell me is Ryan Fitzpatrick's a smart quarterback.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Come on, yeah, you're not gonna do that.
Speaker 5 (04:19):
And then you're gonna.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
Tell us that Clayton, Kershaw and Stafford went to high
school together.
Speaker 5 (04:24):
Joe Joe fla may or may not be elite.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
That's Oh no, whoa, that's a hot take. Oh my god,
I've never heard that one. So dude, you guys are.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Saving all These are all huge things, man, Why don't
give them all at once to me?
Speaker 4 (04:36):
Now, well, that's The problem is, is there, uh the
ESPN broadcast is force feeding us the same six stories.
We know he's got a unique workout, we know he's
seven foot five, we know he did this in the
French League, And I get your point, right, like, this
isn't you know, this isn't uh you know, we don't
want it to turn into the NFL Draft either, where
(04:58):
we have to find a sob story about everybody and
blah blah blah blah blah.
Speaker 5 (05:02):
It just feels like I don't know.
Speaker 4 (05:04):
I mean, the story sometimes sells itself, right, Like what
do they say about a great baseball broadcaster or a
great NFL broadcaster. Let the moment sell itself. When Tom
Brady throws the game winning touchdown to go to the
Super Bowl. We don't need the great broadcaster, the great broadcasters,
the Joe Bucks to whoever they're.
Speaker 5 (05:22):
Gonna lay out. Let the moment sell itself.
Speaker 4 (05:24):
We don't need the victor when Banyama over sell right.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Now.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
We know he is one of the most touted players ever.
We know he's seven foot five. We know he did
the thing in France where he led the league in scoring,
and he did this, and he did that, like we
get it.
Speaker 5 (05:37):
I don't know. I think there's let me put it
this way, I think.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
It's a hater. You're just a hater, man, you are you?
You hate? I mean what what? What you? I mean? Really?
Speaker 1 (05:45):
What if you look at cat videos on the internet,
do you throw your phone in the lake and.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
Go I can't look at one more cat video? These
things are terrible. I mean, why why are you hating
so much?
Speaker 5 (05:53):
I just I think there is a way.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
And by the way, I agree with you is like, okay,
the second round pick, that's not gonna the team, Like, yeah,
we don't need to spend thirty five minutes talking about whatever.
What I am just saying is like I said, just
let the story sell itself. And I don't know, I
just think there there there has to be a balance.
I just think there or I don't think it has
to be. I think there should be a balance, and
(06:17):
I think they could do a good job.
Speaker 5 (06:18):
We he's been.
Speaker 4 (06:19):
Hyped for the last three or four months as the
greatest prospect since this, since that, since the other thing,
and so I just bring it up because we don't
now need the hype that like we've been waiting for
this moment. We don't need to go back in history.
If that makes sense, of course you do.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
What do you want another who's better Lebron or Jordan conversation?
You and hey, hey, who would you take? Lebron or Jordan?
What would you think? Would you say? Who'd you take?
Who'd you take?
Speaker 4 (06:42):
Well, that's what I mean. I mean, I've been having
the Wenby versus Lebron. Look Lebron versus Jordan is so
February of twenty twenty three, it's now Wenby versus Lebron.
Speaker 5 (06:51):
I mean they might.
Speaker 4 (06:53):
I mean, you know, we obviously have the sound down
here because we're we're doing the best radio show in
America right now, but that might actually be the second
half conversation. Okay, So Lebron at nineteen ore Web at night,
hag And by the way, this is my thing with the.
Speaker 5 (07:07):
Hype with them Wemby.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
If you're saying that, oh, he's the greatest American prospect
in the history of American team sports, like Adrian wol
Janowski did. I'm not picking out him because I don't
know the guy personally, But does that mean that if
he isn't the all time leading scorer in the history
of the NBA surpassing Lebron's totals, that he's somehow a failure.
It's just the whole discourse on him has been exhausting
(07:29):
to me.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
Due how dare you say that so shortly after the
fourth of July and we talk about great Americans and
here's Victor wembinaal who's been playing in Europe now over here? Now,
how dare you say that right so soon after our
nation's greatest birthday?
Speaker 3 (07:42):
I can't believe that.
Speaker 5 (07:43):
Wow, Wow, that was very anti American of me.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
That was you were really wow? Hey, hey, you know
I know what. Listen, this is not my first day
on the job. I know what people want. People want
to hear about Victor Wembdon. Maybe Ara Torres does not, but.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
No, I want to hear. I want to hear about
tonight with Victor Weinbiyama. I don't want to hear about
France three months ago and we spent the last three
months watching highlights of it.
Speaker 5 (08:04):
That's all.
Speaker 1 (08:05):
Look, I'm telling you about my vacation, so I know
went to France and look here's me at the Louver.
Speaker 5 (08:09):
Listen, let me give you an example. You're you're you're
a Jets fan.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
Right, yeah, do you just got banned from the Eiffel Tower.
I just saw on Twitter. You can no longer go
to the Eiffel Tower.
Speaker 5 (08:17):
I can no longer go to the Louver.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
I can no longer go see the Mona Lisa that
there's a line for and you can't get close to anyway.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
You are banned, Napoleon, you can't go see you know, Nope,
can't see that I'm seeing, you know, chompsy Lese can't
go there.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
No, you are being banned. But you're like, this is
like imagine it.
Speaker 4 (08:32):
The debut for Aaron Rodgers next year with the with
the New York Jets. All they did was talk about
the time he won the Super Bowl against the Pittsburgh
Steelers ten years ago in Dallas. That's all they literally
all they talked about, nothing but.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
Talk about winning the super Bowl with the Jets. Hey,
he won the super Bowl with the Jets. That that's
what I want to know. That's not what they're gonna
talk about. Even in the Super Bowl, they'll just be
talking about the Packers. Hey, remember the time where there
was that sort of catch with Dez that was crazy.
Let's talk about that instead of what's going on right
now in front of us. That's basically what we got
to start this game in Las Vegas. At the end
of your first year, Discover credit cards automatically double all
(09:08):
the cash back you are and that's right, everything you
word is doubled.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Seriously see terms.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
Check it out for yourself at Discover dot com slash match. Well,
as we close in on halftime, we are seconds away
from halftime. Victim Wembenyama has had a mixed debut so far.
But let's hear what the very first basket in the
career of the greatest player in the history of American
sports sounded.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Like get hits and it's a line.
Speaker 5 (09:37):
This guy was good.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
What what do you come on?
Speaker 6 (09:40):
Man?
Speaker 5 (09:40):
We don't need his first drive a.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
Look at that the ball got loose. I'll go what
happened to him?
Speaker 5 (09:48):
This isded to the necks.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
And look at that wembn Yama traded for everybody in
the knicks.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
Now, this is wem Bean Yama's first bucket of the game.
And Alex Tyshert now I'm I'm watching you. Now, I'm
watching you very carefully with the rest of the night.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
You're like good pace to this game, nice rim run
by Gwen Banna, and there it is.
Speaker 5 (10:10):
Did they stop the game?
Speaker 2 (10:11):
First bucket coming on a five foot little turnaround with
the left.
Speaker 4 (10:15):
Hand or spur I went to the bathroom, Jason. Did
they stop the game and give them give him the
ball and have the ceremony at half court?
Speaker 5 (10:22):
Okay?
Speaker 1 (10:22):
He gave a speech and the first thing he said was,
I didn't know it was Britney Spears.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
I didn't know. I didn't know. Please still love me now.
Speaker 5 (10:28):
I was all thank noney when hugged Kareem at half court.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (10:33):
By the way, Jason, I know we're going to talk
about Britney Spears here coming up, but let the record
show he never mentioned her by name in that press
conference yesterday Thursday after the incident, so there's no talking
about Britney Spears at any point. He's just oh, there
was an incident and I don't know what happened, and
that's crazy, blah blah blah blah blah.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
So yeah, we'll get to the resolution of that, which
it just today with the video that came out of
that was crazy. But as you said, let's deal with
the here and now. A couple minutes so far, in
the first half. We just hit halftime spurs and the Hornets.
Wen beIN Yam has played a decent number of minutes.
He's won for seven from the floor. He has shown
(11:12):
to be fair to wem beIN Yama. And this is
this is what I've seen from him over the course
of the past forty five minutes. He has displayed his
skill set that everybody said. He had right, good vision
on the open floor, had a couple of really nice passes. No,
you know, his spacing was good, he would you know?
He took a couple of threes missed. I will say
that as impressive as he has looked, he does not
(11:34):
look out of place, does not look like he's he's
somewhere where.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
Hey, the game is I got to catch up to
the game a little bit.
Speaker 1 (11:39):
The one thing is I could say he's a little passive.
A couple of times they've gotten the ball down low
and he's tried to bang and he has backed off
and looked for an outlet coming off there, almost like
he's afraid for the offensive foul or for whatever reason.
He's not as aggressive and trying to bully the ball
in like he can. The first couple of times he
gets a couple of bangs, and look, being seven five
(12:00):
and two hundred and fifteen pounds, you're not gonna.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
Bowl people over. But still you have a bit of reach.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
You have a been a height advantage over everybody, obviously
being seven three and a half. So I will say
there's a couple of times where he's gotten the ball
where I expect him, Hey, I'm taking this to the
hole and I'm going up, and instead he is backed
off and looked for an outlet.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
So it's fine.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
I mean, it's this is not Lebron's debut. This is
not Chris Weber's debut behind the back dunk. This is
not Lebron showing you I have an NBA body at
the age of eighteen.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
It's fine.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
He's showing you why he's he's the number one overall pick.
He's showing you his skill set. He's moving pretty good,
just a little passive on the offensive end.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
Now that's what I saw. What did you see? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (12:38):
I saw much the same.
Speaker 4 (12:39):
I mean, I think, and I don't know where you
and Mike have been on one, Binyama, but I love that. Uh,
you know, I wish him nothing but the best. But
seven foot five, you know, probably what to ten, you know,
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
He goes about two. This official weight was too was
two fifteen, which is on the witches and the lighter
half of the NBA.
Speaker 4 (13:01):
Yeah, And so I have never had these outsized expectations
for him because I've never believed the narrative. I don't
believe he's the most hyph prospect since Lebron. I lived
through Zion Williamson. I lived through Greg Odin, who oh,
by the way, I was told would have been the
number one overall pick after his sophomore year of high school.
So I have never bought into it. But I do
(13:22):
think that for the people that have pushed that narrative,
I think he's looked fine to a little bit disappointing.
And it's not oh my got his career is over.
He's the worst thing ever. But I think when you
have a two hundred and fifteen pounds center. What did
Draymond Green say the other day on Paul George's podcast,
is that you know, we got grown men here, and
we're gonna body him up, and we're not gonna make
it easy for him, and he's gonna be elite defensively,
(13:43):
but it's gonna be a process to get to his
spots offensively.
Speaker 5 (13:46):
You know, we can hate Draymond Green or like Draymond Green.
Speaker 4 (13:48):
He says a lot of crazy stuff sometimes, but I
think he's very I thought his analysis has proven to
be very on point so far.
Speaker 5 (13:57):
Early in one Banyama's debut.
Speaker 1 (14:00):
Five points, five rebounds, three blocks, one for seven from
the floor. This would translate to ten points, ten rebounds,
six blocks, which would be a pretty nice debut, even
though you're playing against the bottom third of anybody's potential roster.
But hey, first game, first night, he doesn't look out
of place. He doesn't he doesn't look like it's struggling.
(14:21):
His adapting, his adapting to the professional game is going
to be a big deal. No, it's gonna be It's
gonna be a feeling out process with his body. And
this is why we talked about last night. Hey, minute limits,
you know, minute limits for Wemby. You don't want him
to play too many limits and the pounding of the
NBA gets to him and he winds up getting hurt
because that's the one thing you have. He's not big enough.
(14:42):
And you see when he tries to pound down low
a little bit, and he's a little bit more forced,
a little bit more finesse to his games. He's not
gonna bowl anybody over, So that's all. That's my only
fear about him. He's not gonna come in and suddenly
take over the league. From the aspect of look at this.
He's taken the Spurs from a bottom feet or into
the playoffs. He's not Lebron. He doesn't have that kind
(15:03):
of skill set where I'm going to transform a team
right away. But what I've seen so far is he's fine,
and he'll be a really good player. And I almost
kind of look at him. I know we compare him
to different people, but he almost looks to me like
a younger a younger Yannis. Where it goes, Okay, you
knew when Yiannis came in he had the skills.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
It was he needed his skill in his.
Speaker 1 (15:23):
Body to catch up to each other, and they did,
and look where Jannis is now. So it's just going
to be how long is it going to be for
his body and his skill set to catch up to
where he is and then he could start really doing
stuff in the NBA.
Speaker 4 (15:33):
I just wish in the lead up to the draft
people had said that, because I think that's a totally fair,
realistic analysis that I don't think was shared pretty much
at all in the lead up to the draft.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (15:54):
Well, I know what I said last night, very excited,
I said, Hey, at the Seed is all yours until
the lose. Because the Mets have not lost since Mike
Harmon's been on vacation, gone away. Padres are now up
three to one. This could be your last night, Lee,
Just so you know, it could be your last night
if the Mets lose tonight.
Speaker 4 (16:11):
We have like four more victor win Butnyama news cycles
to get through before we Before I even start worrying
about the Mets they got I'm just saying.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
I'm just saying they're losing three to one to the
Padres in a matchup of the most the most underachieving
teams in baseball. Just want to let you know that, Hey,
it gets late early, so you know you might want
to not ignore that for too long, especially if you
want to keep working, because this could be your last night.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
Well, it could be.
Speaker 5 (16:33):
It might have to get this in studio since my
career is on the line.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
Well, hey, hey it is. Now.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
You know the thing about Wemby, right, who's back in
the game now, starting the second half for the Spurs.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
They lead Charlotte forty six thirty one.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
I'll tell you one really good thing I've seen from
him and then one really weird thing I've seen from
his do it. So the first thing, now you're getting
to see him now over the course of the game.
The the way he sees the floor, you can tell
there's no panic. I know where to go with the ball,
(17:06):
and he gets that ball up court and into a
good and into a good position pretty fast. Right. He
knows what's going on on the floor. He's not someone
that's going to rush a pass everywhere he goes.
Speaker 3 (17:17):
He waits.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
He's been able to wait to draw the defender to
him and then hit hit an open player. So I
love that the vision he has, you can tell is there,
and that's gonna be a really big deal for him
when he gets the ball. The lack of urgency that
he has with it, like it is a difference between
him being smooth where boy, he's smooth. You don't really
tell how fast he's moving, but just when he gets it,
(17:40):
I feel like he's he's purposefully slowing down a little bit.
And he's not able to attack the rim. He's not
able to be as aggressive offensively. A little weird because
you would think a guy in his NBA debut, Hey,
I'm gonna want to go out there and ball out right,
I'm gonna take a lot of shots, I'm gonna be
aggressive at summer league. I'm gonna do all these things.
And instead, like I said, he's been pretty passive, but
(18:01):
especially when he gets the ball in a position on
offense to do something, it's like, okay, Like I'm doing
a drill and they tell you, okay, this drill is
going to be a three quarter speed because the coach
wants to teach other So I feel like Wenby's almost
like at three quarter speed when he gets a basketball.
Speaker 5 (18:14):
It's an interesting take.
Speaker 4 (18:15):
I mean, that's really the thing that stood out is
you know, I don't want to be super negative. It's
the first game, it's whatever, but that is the one
thing on a positive that I think has stood out.
I mean, obviously, the size and the weight. You know,
he's got to put on weight all that. But the
playmaking has impressed me. Is you know, listen, I'm not
to be clear doing the thing where I'm comparing him
to the best player in the league, but like you
(18:37):
watch Jokich when he catches the ball at the top
of the key, just how comfortable he is, how calm
he is, how he lets things come to him rather
than trying to force it. I get the same sort
of vibes from when Minyama not saying he's Jokicic, to
be abundantly clear, but I think that is something that
has stood out to me, is he seems confident with
the ball in his hands. Now we knew he could
(18:58):
put the ball on the floor, but probably that's the
thing that stood out to me so far, is the playmaking.
The ability to see others obviously at seven foot five,
but just the ability to calmly handle things.
Speaker 5 (19:08):
Is probably the thing that's jumped out to me so far.
Speaker 1 (19:10):
See, that's where you gotta go the other way and
get your undisputed audition going. Is he a better passing
big man than Jokic already? Right boom, that's where you
go right there, he's a fan of the title. Is
Wemby a better big man passing big man than Jokic?
Speaker 3 (19:24):
Oh, there you go.
Speaker 4 (19:25):
Here's the real question. Is Jokic ducking Wemby? I don't
see him at Summerly. I see him in Serbia dancing
at block parties.
Speaker 5 (19:33):
I mean, I'm just asking. I mean, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
I remember when Lonzo Ball was duck in d Aaron
Fox in the Summer League. I'm old enough to remember that.
Speaker 1 (19:40):
Wait, ladies, he's not gonna play tonight later, but he's
gonna play tomorrow night.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
Oh okay, I'll tell you a true story about that
very quickly, because I know nobody cares. But my You know,
this week was my wedding anniversary, my birthday, but it
was also my Fox Sports Radio anniversary. July fourth, twenty
seventeen was my first ever episode filling in Jason Smith
alongside Mike Harmon. And I bring it up because I
(20:04):
was supposed to go to Summer League that Friday, but
Jason Smith on the fourth of July.
Speaker 5 (20:10):
Decided to call out, as you should, he spent time
with your family.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (20:13):
But the following Monday, I said, well, you know what,
I'll go out to Summer League to watch de Aaron
Fox and Lonzo ball and I was about halfway out
there in the car driving.
Speaker 5 (20:24):
When I found out that Lonzo was not playing.
Speaker 1 (20:26):
So yeah, very surprising that the Aaron Fox would lit
him up previously. Now Lonzo had a mysterious injury and
missed that game for the Lakers.
Speaker 3 (20:34):
Very very very very weird. Hey I'm missing that game.
Speaker 1 (20:37):
Uh well, I'm glad. I was saying, that's a big
week of debuts for you here.
Speaker 3 (20:41):
I didn't know that.
Speaker 1 (20:41):
I didn't know that me taking off on the fourth
of July spurred all this on. Had I known that it,
maybe I'll work the fourth of July and you have
a completely different career path.
Speaker 4 (20:49):
I was gonna say, listen, I don't want to say
that my Fox Sports Radio anniversary is the biggest anniversary
of the week for me. But I'm not not saying
it either. I'll let I'll let America decide. I'm not
I'm not going no.
Speaker 3 (20:59):
But that's a hot take right there.
Speaker 1 (21:00):
You gotta say, in order my Fox Sports Radio anniversary,
my birthday, and then number three is my wedding anniversary.
Speaker 5 (21:06):
That are almost here, guys.
Speaker 3 (21:08):
There you go there's your hot take right there.
Speaker 4 (21:10):
No, no, no, I have to leave it. I have
to leave the mystery up to the audience. I'm not
saying that working with Mike Carmen on July fourth was
the single most important anniversary that that occurred this week.
Speaker 5 (21:20):
But I'm not not saying it either. You guys decide,
you guys, light off, fireworks.
Speaker 3 (21:26):
I'm doing a show tonight.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
Fireworks, bottle rockets, bottle rockets, bottle rockets.
Speaker 5 (21:31):
Brandon Miller just had the Oh no, it was Kai Jones.
Never mind Kai Jones with the blue hair. Brandon Miller
not very good, guys. He's playing a lot tonight. In
two games.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
It struggled a little bit, but like I said, it's
all Lemmy just.
Speaker 5 (21:42):
Got thrown down on.
Speaker 3 (21:43):
He's a bust. He's a bust, he says, got posterized, Yeah,
got run poster poster.
Speaker 5 (21:53):
No wonder Yo Kitsch didn't feel the need to show up.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
He's like, no, I'm not showing up for this chumping
big men.
Speaker 3 (22:00):
Then Yo Kitch eight seventh to hey on Hot tex
So while we're.
Speaker 1 (22:04):
Watching Wemby's debut and san Antonio up over Charlotte fifty
one thirty eight and like we said, mix bag for
Wembin Yama so far. Today, the end of the Wemben
drama with Britney Spears came to light as police announced
there's going to be no charges filed following the reports
(22:24):
that Britney went up to try to talk to him,
tapped him on the shoulder from behind. Security guard reached
back backhanded Britney Spears hit her hand into her face,
her glasses fell off. Britney filed charges. Now there's going
to be no charges filed as the video of the
incident was put out today And just like we said
(22:44):
last night, right, sometimes everybody well there's got to be
one one take and someone's right and someone's wrong. As no,
we told you the biggest thing from this last night
was that both sides handled this horribly and from the
beginning to the end, and this could have been done
much easier, much better, but both sides decided to be
awkward with it. Now, the first thing you saw the
video is Brittany making away running across the gost hider
(23:06):
Victor Webinyama. Right, So she's running running along and what
does she do. She taps him on the back, right,
just taps him on the back.
Speaker 3 (23:14):
So a far.
Speaker 1 (23:15):
Cry from the first reports where from wem beIN Yama's
security courch she she grabbed him from behind.
Speaker 3 (23:23):
Don't say that.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
That makes it sound like she ran up, grabbed him
and tried to turn. She simply tapped him on the shoulder.
Speaker 3 (23:28):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (23:28):
So that's a lie from when it's a lie from
Wembin Yama, and it's a lie from his from his
from his staff right because he even said it, Oh,
she grabbed me from but no, there was no grab it.
Speaker 3 (23:38):
She tapped you on the shoulder, man stuff.
Speaker 1 (23:40):
You know, it's like from the beginning it was I
want to make sure people don't say this is my fault.
Nobody grabbed you from behind. Okay, So that's completely on
wembin Yama. His people needed to handle that better. Now,
the backhand that we saw was simply the the security
guard putting his hand up hitting Britney's hand, which knocked
into her face, which knocked her glasses off.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
Okay, so that's what it was. This was. This wasn't
something where it was.
Speaker 1 (24:06):
It was a turn and it hit this is I
don't even know that he turned his head around like
he kind of just put his hand up like, hey,
get your hand away from from when bin Yama and
it hit Britney's hand and it hit her in the face,
and it was unfortunate. And Britney's got to know from
her perspective and where she's been as a star that
if people start running up to you in an entourage.
Speaker 3 (24:24):
What's gonna happen?
Speaker 1 (24:25):
Right, so so so the same thing was true last
night after seeing the video today, both sides could have
handled this better. Britney should have known better when ben
Yama's team, when ben Yama should have known better than
to try to play it off to be something that
it was not right. It would be easy to just
say I'm sorry it happened. I'm sorry it happened, but
it went this way. And now the video gets out
(24:46):
and it just seems like, Okay, was this.
Speaker 3 (24:49):
Did this really need to be this way? Did this
really need to be this way?
Speaker 1 (24:53):
It didn't, And and it's it's a glimpse into a
little bit of celebrity life with with Brittany and and
how everything she does makes news. And when Benyama going, Okay, dude,
this is kind of what it's going to be like.
Not the people are gona run up and do this
for you. But this is something you can expect, being
the number one overall picking the draft to be compared
(25:13):
to Lebron in twenty twenty three, compared to two thousand
and three, where there wasn't as much social media, there
wasn't as much. A twenty four hour news cycle debate
shows all of these things. So I hope looking for
this from a positive from wem beIN Yama's perspective, he
can see this as Okay, I have to understand how
I need to act, what the right thing to do
(25:33):
in all situations is, and the way I reacted to
this was stupid. I should never come I should have
never come out and said she grabbed me. I should
have tried to play it off. I should have invited
her to the game. I should have apologized to her.
I should have made sure I said hey, my security
man went over to apologize to her. But instead he
was more concerned with just saying I don't know what happened.
I don't know what happened.
Speaker 3 (25:53):
Dude.
Speaker 1 (25:54):
You gotta take responsibility. There's video of everything, video of
you think there's no video in a casino. Of course,
it was going to get out. We told you last
night this is gonna get out. It's just not out
right now, but it's going to get out at some point.
So I hope that he takes that as a learning
situation where he understands, Okay, this is kind of what
life is gonna be, and I gotta do it a
little bit better because the next time, who knows what's
gonna happen.
Speaker 4 (26:14):
Yeah, I mean, just even watching that video, first of all,
I just think you know, and I remember you and
I talked about this last night. I'm sure a lot
of people either hurt us live or hurt us on
the podcast today. I said I thought the worst person
in this whole mess was Wemby's PR team because it
was clear there was no ill intention and they just
(26:35):
didn't have to make it into the thing that they did.
And I still feel that way. I also am a
lot less sympathetic to Britney Spears now that I see
the video. And this isn't like victim blaming or anything
like that, but like same time, again, to your point,
she knows what life is a celebrity is like, and
(26:55):
when you watch the video, I mean she's pretty far
in the background and runs up on him, taps up
in the shoulder. Obviously, thankfully nothing it was completely innocent.
But the security guard, I mean, imagine if it wasn't somebody,
if it wasn't Britney Spears, you know, And like when
I watch the video, I am a lot less sympathetic
because the security guard is on lookout.
Speaker 5 (27:16):
You know.
Speaker 4 (27:16):
It's by the way, it's one thing to be the
security guard for filling the blank person. It's another thing
to be a security guard for a seven foot three
person that is naturally going to attract eyes everywhere he goes.
So I don't know, like, like, I'm not victim blaming here,
but I am a lot less sympathetic to Britney Spears
now that I've actually seen the video. Not because she's
(27:36):
a terrible human being, but the way in which it happened.
You shouldn't be surprised that he has security and you
shouldn't be surprised that they're there to protect him. And thankfully,
just getting a little smack from yourself in the face
is Frankly, it could have ended up being a lot worse.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
See a different I have a different take on Britney's part, Please,
I've a different take.
Speaker 3 (27:54):
On Brady's Parable. We'll get to coming up in a
couple minutes.
Speaker 2 (27:56):
But first be sure to catch live editions of The
Jason Smith's Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern,
seven pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (28:05):
The debut of Victor Webbin Yama in the Spurs win
tonight nine points, eight rebounds, five blocks, two for thirteen
from the floor. There was some good, there was some weird,
and no one better to break it down with us
in the man who had a front row seat to
it covering Summer League in Vegas, longtime NBA insider. You
(28:27):
can follow him on Twitter at mark G Underscore Medina.
That's at mark G Underscore Medina. He sat right next
to Britney Spears and watched the whole game.
Speaker 3 (28:37):
Mark, What was that like?
Speaker 6 (28:39):
Well, I think there was some shorten fraud going on
because of all these allegations, you know what we were
talking about comparisons. We're wondering as did we see the
next Anthony Bettett up close or what?
Speaker 3 (28:52):
Wow, that's a hot take. All right, Wow, that's a
blast of the past. Wow, I'll take it.
Speaker 1 (29:00):
Take our number one overall picks. Uh, So what did
you think tonight? You got to see him up, Cluid.
There's some things I liked that, you know, Aaron Torres
and I talked about.
Speaker 3 (29:08):
We liked his court vision.
Speaker 1 (29:10):
He looks like he's going to be a really good
passing big man sooner rather than later. Not as aggressive
as he probably needed to be when he got the ball.
So there's some good, some bad. Well what did you
think from seeing him?
Speaker 6 (29:20):
Yeah? Well, clearly, as you guys know, I'm being fasatious
about the early comparisons. I think too late.
Speaker 1 (29:26):
I already put that out on Twitter, Mark, Mark Medina
says Victor women Yama is the new Tony Bennett, and
I put a picture of Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga up.
Speaker 3 (29:35):
So there's there. You go.
Speaker 5 (29:38):
Tony Bennett like just singing. He just quit and starts singing.
Speaker 6 (29:40):
Oh sorry, guys, I was gonna say the comparison is
not apps because they have any actually played well in summer.
Speaker 1 (29:49):
But I gotta put that out on Twitter again.
Speaker 3 (29:51):
Oh my goodness, that makes threads. You gotta be on
threads for that one. Mark, that was a good one, all.
Speaker 6 (29:59):
Right, but all seriousness. Hopefully this gets on Twitter and
bread too. Is that the pitcher's going to be fine.
He's he's going to have a successful season. But I
think in the short term, no doubt, fans that were
here were at least hoping that there would be some
my cool high real moments. And really the only high
rate the reel was when he got dumped on by
Kai Jones. But I think you guys fail in the
(30:20):
head that he had a lot of good comfort with
his movement.
Speaker 7 (30:23):
He had some good passing, some good defense. I think
the negative, beyond the obvious misshot is that he seemed
to be trying too hard, which is understandable, but he
was also getting very frustrated with, you know, fouls being
called against them or whether when opponents were being very physical.
I remember one time in particular, and he got called
for a foul and he was incredulous because his opponent,
(30:46):
like elbowed him in the throat. And so he has
a right to upset the upset. But I do wonder
is that the inevitable recipe that he's going to be
facing this rookie season where guys are going to just
try to see how much they can rough them up
because of the whole.
Speaker 6 (31:00):
Imo that he's got. You know, this muscle builder body
type and see if it gets him off his game.
And I know that ahead of this, a lot of
people around the NBA expected that that would be an adjustment,
but they also didn't think it was going to inhibit
him from showing the rest of his skills as a passer,
as a score, as a good post up player, occasional
(31:23):
outside shooter, and you know the work that he puts
in to get better. But yeah, summer League debut, I
guess the silver Lions that only can get better from here.
Speaker 4 (31:33):
That's really interesting, Mark, So you cause you know we're
watching in studio here. I didn't see that emotion on TV.
He was kind of a little bit yeah, for lack
of a better term, emotional about not emotional, but you
know what I mean, like a little whatever about some
some tiki tac calls and and people bodying him up.
Speaker 6 (31:51):
Yeah, for sure. And you know what, I think you
can look at that from two lems there in one
the silver lining, it's it's a good thing because he
shows he cares that if he wants to win. I
think the negative part of that is that things aren't
going to go your way in the basketball game and
cannot throw your game off and so especially because of
his physique and that he's a rookie, it just seems
(32:12):
like that that's going to be the inevitable approach that
defenders put on him. Let's be physical, let's knock him
off his game, Let's try to get him frustrated, and
then see what happens. But you know, obviously this is
a learning experience, and when there's people you know around
the league town evaluators, they don't put a lot of
stock at summer leagues, and so when they're thinking big picture,
(32:35):
while they do know that this is an adjustment, could
take up the three years for him to not like
be a complete, you know, bulky big man like Shack,
but enough to withstand the physical pounding. They think that
he has a body of work that will still show
he's a great player, but clearly he has a lot
to work on the showcase.
Speaker 1 (32:56):
You know, he kind of reminds me of if you're
looking for an app comp Garrison to how his career
is going to go, Like, you know, you want to
compare him to Lebron because he's that kind of prospect. Well,
Lebron came in with an NBA ready body at eighteen
and dominated right away. For when bin Yama, I kind
of look at it, it's going to be a lot
like Gianni's where he's going to need some time for
his skill set to grow into his body and for
(33:18):
that to match. And when that happens, that's the kind
of player I expect to see.
Speaker 3 (33:23):
Now.
Speaker 1 (33:23):
Could it be three months, could it be a year,
Could it be a year and a half yet, But
he's gonna need that. When when my talent and my
body can sync up, that's when it's really going to
start happening for him.
Speaker 6 (33:34):
Yeah, I say the talent and body comparison, but as
far as him and Giannis, I do see some differences
here because when Ayanas entered the league, he frankly didn't
really have any skills. He had athleticism, now is it?
And I think the good thing for Victor is he
does have basketball skills. He has instincts, he has to
fund the bentals. So I think it's a foul. I
(33:55):
think more to the earlier point that you mentioned about
matching those skills with his body type. The good thing
is that's not going to be his game. He's not
the physique power guy like Shack. He's going to always
be this finesse kind of player. But I think regardless
of that, you still need to be able to with down,
(34:15):
withstand the physicality from other opponents. But I think, you know,
even beyond that, he's got to make shots. He's got
to know the timing of things, the rhythm of thing is.
And I think ironically, when he wasn't having the ball,
he showed a lot of comfort level with his movement.
But once he had the ball, it seemed like he
was forcing a lot of things. There were a few
(34:36):
possessions when he was posting up and charl was thrown
like three or four bodies at him, and he was
getting all these turnovers. And so that's where it's about.
Maybe this is guy who's trying too hard a little
bit to slow it down and be patient with the process.
Speaker 3 (34:52):
Mark.
Speaker 4 (34:53):
You know, first of all, one thing I told Jason
a minute ago, I actually give credit to the Spurs.
I mean, the fans wanted to show the fans got
at least got him on the court. They brought him
back on the court with about four minutes to go,
and it would have been easy to shut him down.
Two kind of quick questions that are kind of intertwined.
One do we have any sense for how much he's
going to play at Summer League? But two, is there
(35:15):
any official plan on how they'll use him next year?
I mean, you know, we live in an era where
guys don't play eighty two games a year anymore, let
alone a rookie coming into the league for the first
time on what we expect to be a non contender.
Speaker 5 (35:29):
Do you have any sense for both this week?
Speaker 4 (35:31):
But then the bigger picture of year one, how much
the how the Spurs plan on using him.
Speaker 6 (35:37):
Yeah, I don't have the sense of exact details. I
have the exact sense of the of the stig picture.
The Spurs aren't sharing all this, but people around the
league expect that he's going to have a limited workload
in Summer League. You know, maybe he plays another game,
but probably nothing beyond that. But that's in line with
what most teams do with their lottery players, regardless of
(36:00):
whether they have an injury, they shut them down after
opening weekend. But to your other question about his rookie season,
there's a strong expectation from other people around the week
that there's no way he's playing eighty two games, and
part of that is because of his body type. Of physicality,
his workload of playing professionally in France for a good
(36:21):
chunk of time. And also I think to just temper
the expectations that as much as the Spurs want to
win right away, they're not expected to be a playoff
team next season, so there's almost kind of a freedom
and that they might be able to have a kind
of treating this season as a mulligan. It's actually about
(36:43):
player development, nothing else. So I don't know how many
games it's going to be, but it's not going to
be any two. And I want to be surprised that
when it comes to back to backs, he's not going
to play any of them. I mean, he'll just play
one of them and then go from there.
Speaker 3 (36:59):
Well for every buddy Mark, I mean, that's kind of
the thing. You know. We've talked about this a lot
the last couple of weeks.
Speaker 1 (37:04):
We talked about free agency and teams getting older, like
sixty five is the new eighty two, Like I don't
expect to see I don't expect to see any star
player play more than sixty five games, And the ones
who will play sixty five will be the ones that
really want the awards at the end. Because that's how
many you have to play in the Guys that don't
care will play sixty I mean really that that's kind
of the new norm now for stars and for for
(37:25):
when Ben Yama. I like it because I want his
body to get used to the NBA pounding and not
be Greg Odin or you get hurt very early, and
the same thing with Chet Holmgren whose body's not ready.
But yeah, I look at sixty five as the top number. Yeah,
you guys are gonna miss fair and this is if
you're healthy all the way through, you're gonna miss seventeen
games to twenty games a year just for general rest
all the star players.
Speaker 6 (37:45):
Well, yeah, I think sixty five you're set on because
that's the minimum number of games that players have to
meet for being eligible for awards. So in Victor's case,
he could still be eligible for that Rookie of the
Year award. And I think that even with all the
concerns that I'm outlining here people around the league, and
I certainly expect this as well, he's going to live
(38:06):
up to the hype as far as showing that he
has those elite skills that we mentioned about passing, defending,
playing really hard being a team player, being you know,
a Jim Ratten soon of the game, and he's going
to make an impact with that. But I think the
other thing that we have to stress here is that
the Spurs aren't being conservative with him out of concern
(38:30):
that he's injuried. Chron that was the case, I don't
think they would have drafted him. And while there's certainly
question marks about his height and just historically how guys
off his stature could have injuries, I don't think a
lot of people around the league are concerned about his
medicals because in France he didn't have a lot of injuries,
(38:50):
and so really it's more about just phasing him into everything,
and I think actually leave you know, Spurs fans comforted that,
you know, poor summer league's debut, probably limited workload rookie
season might be frustrating, but yeah, the big picture is
going to be a lot of good stuff for them
to feel good about Mark.
Speaker 4 (39:08):
So I was reading up a little bit on the Mids.
I don't know if you call it mid, I mean
the in season tournament. I think it was Adrian Woldronowski
December seventh and the ninth. They're going to be the
semi finals and finals feels a little early to me,
Like I get that, you know whatever, But I also
the whole thought was to create interest in the regular season,
(39:30):
but now you're playing it in early December, and at
least in one of those nights you're going up against
Thursday Night NFL Football. Just your thoughts and what you've
heard about this in season tournament so far, because I
think we got a little bit of details this week.
Speaker 6 (39:42):
Yeah, well, I will be honest, I'll get even more
details tomorrow because some league officials are planning to be
available ones. I guess to answer some of these questions.
But my early thoughts on this was partly what you said.
I was struck that was so early in the season,
because there is though it can't compare to the NFL
as the regular season, there is a little bit of
(40:04):
buzz of Opening Night, and it seems too soon to
put that in there. And also they treated Christmas Day
games as as marquee events and the unofficial start of
the regular season, so I thought that they would have
it basically after the New Year, before All Star Break,
as a way to you know, get them out of
(40:24):
kind of the dog days of the regular season. But
regardless of that, my initial thought is that clearly they're
doing this for you know, ratings purposes, ultimate revenue purposes,
create more meaning for non playoff game. But I do
have a fear that's just going to create more problems.
And here's what I mean. You could have teams that
(40:46):
care about this plan tournament for whatever reason, so they're gonna,
you know, compete, and there might be teams that don't,
and so they're gonna sit there guys or not active
a full effort, and then it'll flip on its own
for the normal regular season and games were maybe the contenders,
winners of the n season tournament, they're going to start
(41:07):
having nights off and once they get back to the
regular season or before it. So I just feel like
this whole idea of this is a way to provide
a solution. So all the load management or disinterested non
playoff games isn't going to fundamentally solve that problem. It's
just adding a new thing that could career revenue. But
