This is the best of the Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
That's right, Jason Smith and his best friend Mike Harmon
have the day off today, but I'm in here me
Marvin Wise joined here with my work asso shiit.
Speaker 4 (00:36):
I was waiting to see.
Speaker 5 (00:37):
I was waiting to see if he was going to
throw shade to start the show and say best friend
or not my best friend or whatever. But I no, no,
we're not best friend, So we don't we don't have
to lie, we don't have to make it up. But
let's work associate it. Don't kind of ask me like
on the bottom of a rung bro. Damn course it.
I'm just saying this though.
Speaker 4 (00:53):
I'll just say like the way that they say best.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Friend makes me feel like sometimes it's tongue in cheek.
You know, maybe just maybe there's a joke inside there,
you know.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
What I'm saying. I don't though, I don't know how
you do it. Today. You're doing out standing as always.
Speaker 5 (01:11):
Is so good to be sitting in for the great
Jason Smith and his best friend Mike Harmer with my
co hosts that we do saturdays here man, my man,
Martin White.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
So so what you scrapper, I'm doing well.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
We're broadcasting life from the tirerack dot Com studios. Tirack
dot com will help you get there with an unmaxed selection, fast,
free shipping, free road adds or protection over ten thousand,
recommending his dollars tirerack dot com. It's the way tire
buying should be. I'm doing a lot better than it
seems like the three running backs that Steve de Seger
just alluded to in his update. I mean, it's almost
like the guy's got the rundown. Go figure it now.
(01:41):
But Tony Pollard, Say Kwon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, all of
whom did not receive long term deals. And by long term,
I mean we're talking anything past to look, anything past year.
Speaker 4 (01:56):
So when I say long term, maybe.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
Like midterm, you know what I'm saying, just a little
bit longer than short term deals on the one year
franchise tags that are now available to them. Sakuon Josh
Jacobs have not signed there as Tony Poler did. That's
probably what happens when you break your fibula in the playoffs.
You're gonna go ahead and get that Yeah, go ahead,
us off of that ten mil. Go ahead and get
that year taking care of but VJ if I said
it once, I said it again.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
It's a farce.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
Fall salary cap in the NFL for running backs right now,
and for whatever reason, like in all other sports, in
almost every other position, the top fifteen and ten percent
of top you know, ten to fifteen percent, that the
cream of the crop, the best of the best. It's
really hard for them to get with the money that
they have earned in terms of the production that that
they've put out there. You look at it, Josh Jacobs
(02:43):
was a top the Raiders and almost everything that mattered. Okay,
you look at top the league. Austin Eckler. I'm just
even just in their individual team, just their teams, just
their teams, the output of their teams like you know so,
and then when you put it to the rest of
the league, it's really like, oh my goodness, what's going
on here? But that's the NFL that we're in right
(03:03):
now today. I know, me and VJ, we're gonna sit here,
We're gonna try to solve problems today, folks. Everybody else's
gonna take you just gotta pay him cause you got to.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
Though.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
I have a solution potentially that may just maybe everybody
could get along with to try to get your running
backs paid. We'll get to that in just the moment,
But VJ, first, your thoughts here.
Speaker 4 (03:23):
It's crazy, it really is.
Speaker 5 (03:24):
Josh Jacobs is the first guy that comes to my
mind when I think about a guy that played all
seventeen games for the Raiders last year.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
This is a two time pro baller. He was an
All Pro before.
Speaker 5 (03:33):
Sixteen fifty three with twelve touchdowns and five yards per
on three hundred and forty carries. I'm trying to figure
out how you can at least get that guy to
SA Kwan won him a little like he did have
the injury, but he did come back and show good
face last year and was kicking ass like he was
balling hardcore last year.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
So I'm kind of figuring out what they're doing there.
Speaker 5 (03:54):
But we saw this come in on our show when
Daniel Jones got forty mil for fifteen touchdown passes, said, okay, well,
something's gotta happen with Saquon. I'd attagged a quarterback. Possibly
he's the guy that's probably not gonna sit out of
camp because he's still trying to prove yourself. Say Kuan's
a running back, He's got to get his money. It's
just crazy when you go down the list. You look
at Austin Eckler, where the Charger said, you know what, buddy,
(04:15):
we're gonna show good faith to you. Go ahead and
test Regeoucy, go ahead. He went weeks months and everybody
had an opportunity to sign him, and nobody did it.
A guy that's nine hundred yards plus on the ground,
seven hundred yards plus through the air last year for
the Chargers offense, he can't get paid.
Speaker 4 (04:31):
But just look at this running back off season. Joe Mixon.
Speaker 5 (04:34):
He took a pay cut, Aaron Jones took a pay cut,
Dalvin Cook was cut, Leonard Fournette was cut.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
Zekea Elliot's cut.
Speaker 5 (04:41):
Does anybody even remember that Kareem Hunt is still a
free agent right now and has not signed with a
football franchise in the NFL. It's just crazy. But this
is I mean, this is just where we are right now.
They don't want to pay running backs. The running back
position has been devalued tremendously. So what are you gonna do?
I'm very interesting to hear your solution that you don't
know that hour later, but I want to see.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
What you got about.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
The running back market is devalue Like this real estate
in the hood.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
Looks like like what are we like?
Speaker 2 (05:09):
What? Like?
Speaker 3 (05:10):
The running back market is devalued?
Speaker 4 (05:13):
Like what how is it that?
Speaker 3 (05:16):
The I mean, look, if you look across the league
in the last ten years, quarterback average annual salary gone up,
offensive line average annual salary gone up, defensive line average
annual salary gone up.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
Every average annual salary is going up.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
But the running back and so like, what, Well, it's
just the constant, the idea that you can sit here
and cobble together production out of other places.
Speaker 4 (05:39):
And if I gotta here one more person tell me that, oh.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
You know, the Chiefs got Isiah pa Checko with the
seventh round and you know what, they won a super Bowl.
Speaker 4 (05:48):
No no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, don't. But here's
the thing.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
They also got Patrick Mahomes with the eleventh four years prior,
five years prior.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
That's the thing.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
When you have capital t capitold that guy at quarterback,
then sure maybe you can run your running back as
by committee. Just run them on like Harris I won
one ride in throw a quarter in there, pick up
another one in the fifth round. But the idea that
like the Giants aren't paying Takwuon Barkley like like, I mean,
you saw what Daniel Jones did last year and said,
(06:19):
you know what, that's the reason why we want to
turn football. That's forty million dollars right now. That's the
reason why we want to turn the football games. So
we just accept the fact that quarterbacks are supposed to
quote unquote reset the market. Meanwhile, a running back like
Saquon the reports have you seen the reports about Saquon
(06:41):
and how close they were on the contract. Yeah, essentially
they were offering him to keep you know, just to
keep it in line and keep it easy for everybody.
It was what it was gonna be, something like ten
million this year, ten million next year, twenty something. Guaranteed
he makes more money getting tagged. Yeah, how is that
standard of business in the NFL where it's more or
(07:04):
he's gonna be in super inscented bys to get tagged.
First of all, a guy who has been a guy
who if you played cornerback or safety or something like that,
or was a wide receiver, there'd be no question you
want him to be a cornerstorm part of your franchise, right,
But because of the position that he plays, we have
to question whether.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
Or not this is gonna be a good decision.
Speaker 5 (07:25):
Yeah, And that's because the wear and tear on running
backs and the way things went down with the Todd Gurley.
Dale also said the other day that I felt like
this in the NFL is a copycat league. We know
that it's the biggest copycat league that the good Lord
upstairs has ever created. And when you have teams like
the Patriots, franchise like the Patriots that were able to
kind of honestly and once again to your point, yeah,
(07:45):
everybody doesn't have a Tom Brady, but I guarantee you
there are offensive coordinators, head coaches and gems around the
league that think we don't need Brady. We just need
a service or quarterback, some receivers, and we can get
a running back.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
That's the thing.
Speaker 5 (07:57):
Like, we can get a guy and we can find
a guy to running football, as we've seen teams win
Super Bowls and championships that do.
Speaker 4 (08:03):
So.
Speaker 5 (08:03):
I don't think personally that's a great formula because I'm
all about football one oh one. It starts with run
the football, stop the run. That's that's football. You'll win
a lot of games. If you can run the football,
you can stop the run. You run the football a
little more effectively in my opinion, when you gotta workhorse
back a guy you can hand it to twenty two
to twenty five times a Sunday, three hundred and forty
(08:24):
plus times a year. That's to me as a workers.
You look at a guy like Eric Dickerson three years
in his career, like three of his first four years
in his career he had over three hundred and eighty carries,
like those days are just gone and he ain't get
hurt in the one year he ran for two thousand yards.
This this idea that you know you can't pay him,
I honestly do feel Mark now I might push back
(08:46):
a little bit on the your your opinion of the
running back is being devalued. It has been devalued because
we've seen guys get hurt and go down in the analytics,
which I hate.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
I hate, I call, you.
Speaker 5 (08:59):
Know, dorkisms, the neudisms of sports. I hate all that
analytics stuff that has seeped into the NFL. Well, it
does show if you run your running back this many
times or the average you know, career span for a
running back. I don't buy that when you find a
special guy. But somebody these guys a special thing about that.
Speaker 3 (09:16):
The whole analytics creeping in to the league and so on.
And I'm not an anti analytics guy. I understand percentages.
In fact, I gamble every day and so like. That
is part of the reason why I am for sure
pro analytics. However, the big thing about analytics is you
have to account for the fact that there are human
beings doing it, all right, there are no perfect human beings.
(09:39):
You are not operating on a spreadsheet. You were operating
on a football field, the grid iron, okay, not the
grid lock of a spreadsheet, all right, So the thing,
but it drives me crazy to hear the cap like, Okay,
the NFL is a copycat league.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
So hmm, all right, let's shoe who was in the AFS.
Who's been in the championship the last few years AFC,
but one of the most successful team last five six years,
Kansas City. Okay, all right, we have seen things out
of Patrick Mahomes and his first five years that right
(10:16):
now he is a Hall of Famer, right, Like, just
the success that he is out of the first five years.
Speaker 4 (10:22):
You can laugh all you want, but you can do that.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
The only thing if he retired right now, the only
question people would have is the longevity.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
That's it. That's it.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
And then I bet they would point back to all
a lot of other quarterbacks who are in the Hall
of Fame and be like, I don't give a dim
about his longevity because he won more than five years
than some of these guys won in fifteen, Right, but
they don't grow on trees. We talk about how running
backs are expendable, Well, maybe, just maybe it's because you
(10:52):
are paying guys like Daniel Jones or Derek Carr or whoever,
Jimmy Garoppolo all this money when they are at best
and average positional player. At that spot. What happens is
we'll go where you're messing up here. It's not about paying.
I don't think anybody's crying that Miles Sanders didn't get
you know, or reset the market.
Speaker 4 (11:13):
Yeah, we're talking about the guys who were leading.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
You know what I'm saying, some of the guys who
were leading the league in rushing and they were the offense.
You know what I'm saying, Like Joe Mixon, that's a
tough one. I get it. Hey, he said, I don't
want a jersey, but you know what he also sees
on the Fizon. You got Jamar Chase over there, see
Higgins over there, Tyler Boyd, Joe Burrow and also, not
(11:35):
to mention, Joe Burrow's been sacked half a quadrillion times
since he walked in the NFL. So they gonna have
to spend some money on the offensive line, and that's
just the defense. He looked around the landscape and said,
you know what, wll just pread this eight million out
over the next two years so I can have a
shot to win the Super Bowl.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
Right like that. I get that.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
But also again, Joe Burrow has been in the AFC
Championship Game, twice in the four years, even a.
Speaker 5 (11:59):
Starter like in one year he got hurt and missed
majority of the season with the AC so they three
years healthy, pretty much three years healthy, there they go
two times he's an AFC Championship game. Something else to
that I think happened with these contracts. Receivers started getting absorberble.
Just just sorry, not I want to cut you off.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
But it's an answering to this point because you said
it's been a de incentivized the running back market. Nobody
cries with Kenny Galladay signs for like fifteen million dollars
and you know what I'm saying, Nobody like often Aquars
point the other day was perfect. How am I making
left than a third wide receiver? And you know what
the analytics thing and also does it gives people an
excuse to be bad team builders. It gives you an
(12:40):
excuse to miss out on things. It really does, because
when when when the GM Tennessee, when he when he
trades AJ Brown, people are looking at it like, oh man,
you know this might work out because we drafted trailing Burke,
so this might work out. We don't want to pay
a J Brown at twenty six years old, day. You
know who had no issue with it? Yep, the runner
(13:04):
up and the dog on Super Bowl.
Speaker 5 (13:05):
No, not at all. Also to this, I looked up
and this was kind of really crazy. So the top
level with running backs are trying to get is about
ten million a year. Right, There are some receivers I
looked up and to Austin Eckler's point, that are making
like twelve, fifteen, seventeen, twenty million, Valdaz Scantley, Tyler Lockett, mcclaran,
Christian Kirk, Hunter Renfro, Sutton right there, Checking Moore there,
(13:29):
Hunter renfrom Yeah, Hunter runs out.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
Yeah, they're on the same team. He scored what left
to five touchdowns last year. He had more touchdowns and fumble.
Speaker 4 (13:36):
It was her. It was her.
Speaker 5 (13:38):
You're telling me you're paying Hunter Renfro, if you're the Raiders,
you're paying Hunter Renfro more than you're paying the league
leading's rusher. And you don't even you're not even really
settled at the quarterback position this year. And that's why
I thought he was the guy that jumped out to
me that said, Okay, I get what's going on, because
I understand the NFL. I understand the business of it.
(13:58):
But if there's one guy that it makes me side
on you, Like, okay, y'all Wiland right now, that's the
Raiders with Josh Jacobs, because he's a guy that's proven
and you ain't drafted to get out of Georgia to
come in and try to take his place. He was like, uh, Rencord,
scratch hold up. He to remember they drafted to get
out of Georgia and they put him on notice, and
what are you to do? Just like the league in
Russian touchdowns? I mean, he's your offense. You're not yourself
(14:19):
with the quarterback position. You're paying Hunter Renfro more than
you're paying Josh Jacobs.
Speaker 4 (14:25):
Hey, what's up everybody?
Speaker 6 (14:26):
It's me three time pro bowler LeVar Arrington and I
couldn't be more excited to announce a podcast called Up
on Game.
Speaker 4 (14:33):
What is Up on Game?
Speaker 6 (14:35):
You asked, along with my fellow pro bowler TJ. Huschman
Zada and Super Bowl champion Yup. That's right, Plexico Burris.
You can only name a show with that type of
talent on it. Up on Game We're going to be
sharing our real life experiences loaded with teachable moments. Listen
to Up on Game with me LeVar Arrington, TJ. Hutchman,
(14:56):
Zada and Plexico Burrs on the iHeartRadio, a Apple Podcasts,
or wherever you get your podcast from.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
All right, let's get one of my good friends in
here right now. VJ Alex money line Monaco. You can
get him on Twitter at Alex Underscore Monico. All right,
money line Monico, Alex, how you doing, my good friend?
Speaker 7 (15:26):
What's up? Boys? What's up?
Speaker 4 (15:27):
Mark?
Speaker 2 (15:28):
Now?
Speaker 7 (15:28):
We're doing I'm killing so cal Ron Burgundy with it.
No complain all sunny shot.
Speaker 4 (15:35):
Welcome back.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
I know most of the time you're spending out there
Madison Square Garden were MSG Networks.
Speaker 4 (15:40):
They're out there in New York fighting the snow.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
And the and uh and the rain and the wind
and apparently you know, the wildfire smoke.
Speaker 4 (15:48):
But welcome back to southern California.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
Right now, you got your padres angels not necessarily doing
what they want to the Dodgers.
Speaker 4 (15:54):
We'll see all they turn around.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
But I want to ask you, mister betting expert here,
what are you looking for? Second half of the season
in Major League Baseball terms of futures, Where are we
looking at.
Speaker 4 (16:07):
Here, Martin?
Speaker 7 (16:09):
It's an interesting season, my friend. I mean you think
about what the Reds were preseason. First time ever AO
East all five teams above five hundred at the All
Star break. Never been done since divisions in the Al East.
So there's value all over the place. I mean, I'm again,
I'm a little bit of an emotional better here. I
(16:29):
grew up as a San Diego Padre fan in New
York Mets household, so and at least is a round.
But I'm looking at the value in the wild card.
I still care wrap my head around who the Marlins are?
Are the Giants and d Bacs staying there? I'm looking
at a Padres, gentlemen. I mean, this is the lineup
with five All Stars, three Hall of Famers, with the
(16:52):
top five pitching staff. I mean, Son's gotta at some
point turn it around. At over three and a half,
the one that makes the playoffs, you have to punch
the ticket.
Speaker 4 (17:02):
I did too.
Speaker 3 (17:03):
I took the Padres and you know, Blake Snell, I
saw his cy young As floating right now, like ten
to one, nine to one, that's some good closing line
value if you happen to punch on that earlier in
the earlier in the season, Alex Moider, he was fascinating.
Speaker 7 (17:16):
Here's the fascinating thing, Martin, only ten and a half back.
There're fifty to one to win the division plus five thousand.
I had to triple tech my stigmatism. I'm sorry. The
Dodgers truck worthy this year. I don't trust that pitching
staff at all. It's not the lineup at once was.
And I just again I cannot believe in this Giants
(17:37):
and d back team yet at plus five thousand. I
mean it's Soto, Machado, Tatis, Bogarts and Cronin. Worko was
an All Star last year. At some point, they have
to turn it around. They don't. They're I have to
blow it up. It's gonna be up my.
Speaker 5 (17:52):
May Alice Monical, VJ Bright a Husky here. How you doing, brother,
Great to be talking to you, eh.
Speaker 7 (17:56):
Hey, great, great to be on. Appreciate it.
Speaker 5 (17:58):
Listen, let's stick with baseball and we're gonna go to
my lifelong love team. I've always loved my Texas Rangers
that have jumped up and surprised everybody this year with
great starting pitcher, even with the Grom being out, I'm
looking at the World Series and coming out at least
winning the al Man World Series out of plus thirteen hundred.
I guess Vegas believes they're winning a division that's at
a minus one oh five right now, with a three
and a half game lead right now after beating the
(18:20):
race two three to two today. But that five plug,
that plus five fifty to al and that plus thirteen
hundred to win it all this year, And my crazy man,
I'm like you, I'm an emotional better too. I'm kind
of ready to put something in on those two numbers.
Talks to me.
Speaker 7 (18:34):
I don't know how you don't. I mean, it's the
first team in overall batting average, on base percentage, in runs.
I mean you look at that lineup top to bottom,
and then they've shock to everyone to fight. No de
Grom with what of all he's done in this pitching staff.
I mean, look at him going on the bump, Tom All,
he's got ten wins already, He's still under a three R. Right,
(18:55):
I don't know that the top two runs deferential team
in the league for a reason. Both again, it's just
another curse of the San Diego world. We cannot have
nice things down here, Bruce Folk de fine Go wait again.
I think you have to sprinkle again. The AO Weeks
might beat each other up. You can't trust the Central
(19:17):
for anything. I think it's a non Astros year and
the Angels are really not really there yet. I don't
know how you know.
Speaker 3 (19:26):
From one Texas team to another one where you just
talked about the Rangers. I saw reports coming out Dak
Prescott said he's throwing less than ten interceptions this year.
Speaker 4 (19:35):
We'll see how that plays out. But say Kwamp.
Speaker 3 (19:38):
Barkley also may or may not be a New York
Giant coming up this season, you know, in terms of
that franchise, like, well, see how.
Speaker 4 (19:44):
That turns out. Your thoughts on the NFG East.
Speaker 3 (19:46):
I know you're locked in in terms of the MSG
and the New York team, so both the Jets and
the Giants. I'm interested to know where you're at here.
Which one of these teams do you think wins the division?
If either one?
Speaker 7 (19:57):
I mean, how much time do I have? I got
did Chris Berman two minutes drill here? Because I got
you much to say about the NFC. I cannot believe
the Giants and say Quad can't get done. I'm staring
at him. First of all, you have to hit over
seven and a half wins. I personally think it's a
disrespectful number on the team total for the New York team. Men,
(20:17):
it's the number one cover in the league last year
thirteen covers Martin seven out of eight on the road.
This was a team that had a Danny Dimes club
that was just taking care of the rock and doing
a lot of a lot of the right things in
the coached up dable way. Sixth in rush yards though,
and fourth in rush touchdowns, and you can't sign your
(20:40):
running back. I'm serious again, I'll spare you there. We're
eighteen years in now, coming up on No. One being
a repeat champion. I don't know what they call that curse, gentlemen,
but I have to fire on the Dallas Cowboys to
win the divisions just off of that odd number alone,
no One wins go back and Donovan McNabb in the
(21:02):
earlys this division in succession. I know the Eagles are
gonna be good. I think the Cowboys for some reason,
it's the quietest offseason we had in a long time.
Until Prescott said this interception thing, which he should have done.
But it was the number one reizone team in the
league last year. Gentlemen, top two and takeaways. They do
(21:23):
a lot of the right things correct. I don't think
there's gonna be as big of a drop off at
the whole coordinator. I believe in Shottenneimers. So I like
the Cowboys to come out of that division.
Speaker 5 (21:31):
You talked about over underwins, and I'm gonna go to
my beloved Miami Dolphins. Vegas hasn't said at nine and
a half. I think they're one of the most interesting
quiet teams that we all know. It all is gonna
come down to to us concussions.
Speaker 4 (21:42):
That's it.
Speaker 5 (21:42):
There's no other question marks on this football team, especially
if they land Davin Dalvin Cook. But plus one hundred
on the over, I like that when the division's kind
of weird. Buffalo and A plus one twinning with Josh
Allen's eighty turnovers in the last five years in New
York Jets with Aaron Rodgers don't want the cameras in
his face. But once the and A plus two to
seventy and the Dolphin is sitting there in third place
(22:03):
and a plus three hundred. I'm almost ready to go
in on a plus on both these plus over to
nine and a half and the Dolphins to win a
division at plus three hundred.
Speaker 7 (22:10):
I mean, I don't hate it. I don't hate it.
The thing is they were one in three without two
of last year, and there's a huge drop off there.
We know about the defensive editions that got ahead of
it with Bradley Chuck. They got studs everywhere now that
they had Ramsey. I mean literally, they got studs and
stars everywhere. It comes down no more than to two.
And I'm interested to see they got White lotuses the
(22:34):
backup there, Mike White. They moved them from the debts.
I'm clearly rocking with mister Rogers. It's too late for me.
Sign me up for hard knocks, the whole kit kaboodle.
But to your point, I think the value. I believe
it's three to one tending where you shop itch. That's
a lot of value. But over nine and a half wins,
(22:54):
you have to take it. If you're thinking about which
way to go with the Fins, it spins up, baby,
what's just out there?
Speaker 4 (23:04):
All right?
Speaker 8 (23:05):
All right?
Speaker 2 (23:05):
Sorry?
Speaker 3 (23:05):
Feakle and I horn we got alex Imonico in your
MSG Betting Insider and just as you can hear certifiable maniac.
But they we've been a little bit really positive so
far going on here. What under are you looking at
in terms of team totals?
Speaker 4 (23:22):
Which team? Look, we see it every year a team
goes from worst or first.
Speaker 3 (23:27):
In my head to me is that by definition, somebody's gotta.
Speaker 4 (23:30):
Go from first to worst, right every single year.
Speaker 3 (23:33):
So who do we see that has even won the
division or been a con perennial contender, so on and
so forth that we see take a step back this year.
Speaker 7 (23:43):
I mean, that's a tough question. You're talking to an
optimistic lad here that sold the heat all the way
to the end of the Denver Nuggets trail. So it's
tough for me to not see the realisticness. I mean,
looking at a couple of clubs, I don't see a
hangover for the Chiefs really don't. I mean, going going
by the division, I think the Raiders regress quite a bit.
(24:06):
I don't know if I believe in the Broncos, so
I've probably swiped left on both of those win totals.
I'm liking the Cowboys so I think the Eagles will
be there. I mean, any teams that are shockingly dropping off,
I mean maybe the Seahawks, but again, I believe in
the company culture, and again they drafted well. So I
(24:27):
don't know that there's any really teams that are going
from worst to first. I mean, do you guys see anyone.
Speaker 4 (24:32):
I got one.
Speaker 3 (24:33):
I got one Alex the Chargers, all right, well, I know,
but they were in the playoffs last year.
Speaker 5 (24:39):
They were up twenty plus points and he led Jacksonville.
I just I look at this team, a lot of
a lot of a lot of age. Keenan Allen, you know,
it's been hurt. Derwin James has been hurt. They want
everybody in the city wants to coach fired. I know
Justin Herbert is Justin Herbert.
Speaker 3 (24:53):
But I just if there's a team, if there's a
team that I'm looking at, Austin Eckler, he's cutting sound
bites talking about third receivers, get more money to him.
If there's a team I look at with the AFC
being so loaded, and I.
Speaker 4 (25:04):
Look at their schedule. They start out with the Dolphins
out here in LA. I'll be at the game. They
start out with the Dolphins. And then, of course, like
you said.
Speaker 7 (25:11):
I'm from San Diego, I'm in a toxic relationship with
my la. I can sit here like a therapy session
and talk with my feet up about how many times
this team has broken my nake hating heart. Honestly, they
shouldn't too. You realize it blew the third largest postseason
lost in the strain the league. Gentlemen, you can't trust
(25:35):
them for a second. You can't. But Herbert's the top five,
top six quarterback in the league, and he's gonna get
them the ten wins. I like them, I do ten?
Speaker 4 (25:44):
Okay, right, how do you feel it?
Speaker 3 (25:47):
I feel like this has been slept on team in
the AFCs because Bill Belichick's always gonna get the noise right,
because everybody says all is the hop going to the Patriots?
Or is this wide receiver going famous teams like ever
since Randy Moss they've been his. Is this guy going
to the New England? Is this age receiver Miami? Obviously,
like you just said a minute ago, Vic Fangio, Jalen
(26:08):
Ramsey Tyreek Hills on his podcast You Know Which his
Best Best Athlete title podcast, he needed to be said,
did it but Tyreek Hill on his podcast talk about
two thousand yards in the Super Bowl. Aaron Rodgers is
gonna be on hard knocks. What about the Buffalo Bills, Monico?
Where are you at with this Bills team that's had
a little bit of issue with Stefan Diggs in training camp?
(26:31):
Sean McDermott, it's a very big deal, Intil, it's not
a very big deal that he's not there. Josh Allen
after the UCL around Thanksgiving last year, his play dropped.
I feel like this team could be primed for some
regression here, especially in a division in which everybody else
is getting a lot more attention.
Speaker 7 (26:49):
Listen, I think you might be, you might be Sherlock
onto something. But at the end of the day, we
got to put a little bird man respect on this team.
Thirteen wins, I mean, look all plus one sixty nine
point differential, best in the AFC. Let's not forget this
team allowed the fewest points in the AFC and they've
been in the top ten point four since Josh Allen
(27:12):
turned the corner. So that's really tough to sit here
and say they fall off out of nowhere. But I
mean they are juiced at over ten and a half wins.
There's a role where that's not a great bet and
could be trappy again. You win the division, you get
that first play schedule, it's not really a handout, and
you go down the list and those couple of games
that are difference between the Eagles and the Cowboys. To me,
(27:34):
that's where you do look and see the value and
the jets of the Dolphins in the division. I mean, look,
it's gonna be interesting. Diggs isn't happy, hasn't settled up yet. Well,
we'll see. They did lose a couple of pieces, but
you know, it's still a great secondary and Josh Allen
is Josh Allen man, so we'll see. We'll see. They
ended on a seven game regular season winning street though.
(27:56):
I mean, it's not like they ended the season with
no moments.
Speaker 4 (28:00):
I like Josh Allen.
Speaker 5 (28:00):
I've told people that before the turnovers do bother me
nineteen in the league last year, which led the league.
And sooner or later that stuff catches up to you, Alex.
I know you've been covering this stuff long enough. You
lose one coordinator one year and then Leslie Fraser says,
you know what, I'm taking a year off another coordinator
goes out the door. You may have the names on
the paper there, but I still look towards the guy
(28:21):
that's supposed to be the next coming of the great
NFL quarterbacks, that's gonna win the Super Bowl, And all
I can think about is watching them in that playoff
game against Cincinnati at home, and the number one thing
I wanted to throw at you, they don't run the football.
Ranked twenty fourth or worse over the last three years.
Each season, they don't run the football, And I just
think sooner or later those hits. We say it about Cam,
(28:42):
we say it about Lamar, we said it about Vic,
we say it about all these other running quarterbacks.
Speaker 4 (28:46):
No one wants to say it about Josh.
Speaker 5 (28:47):
But he keeps doing this stuff, helicopter flying and jumping around.
Speaker 4 (28:50):
Doesn't it catch up to him? I just think this
might be the year it does.
Speaker 7 (28:53):
Lucy, You're not wrong. We're talking about the State Farm
Insurance mobile on the way. Gott Allen is no longer
in shockum baby, Joe Burrow is and they lose twenty
seven ten to the Bengals in the Divisional Round. To
your point about the lack of run game, Oh Barton,
the way, We've got a brother on the team and
(29:16):
James Cook that has a Pro Bowl literally in the
family that happens to be on the sideline round. Can
we make a phone call and we get to cook
brothers on the Bills? What do we do? What are
we too? I'm still mind boggle about d hop I
go on about that, but still ridiculous that this Bills
(29:36):
team has not addressed the backfield. And you got Dalvin
out there. I mean, do I dare say Saquan now
right to see if the Bills win out of something
at the skill position?
Speaker 4 (29:45):
All right, Monica, last question I got for you. I
want to know your favorite bet? You got like a
minute left. What's your favorite bet coming up this season?
Speaker 3 (29:53):
If it's maybe hell hell, maybe end of baseball, something
you see in basketball, something on the grid iron?
Speaker 4 (29:59):
Where are what you favorite one? Throw out there?
Speaker 7 (30:02):
Chack baby, I'm going down with Aaron Rodney the wins,
gim it over, win the division, the AFC. You would
love about my favorite? Give it to me. This is
a team. This was a team that gave up eighteen
porish for game last year. We're back into the map.
(30:23):
If they had just put twenty points up in all
those losses, they would have six more wings for a
seven win club. That's a thirteen output w L rating.
I think, Aaron Rodgers is it's gonna be fastening. It's Broadway.
It's absolutely in Netflix season two to Quarterback it is.
(30:43):
I just give it, give it all, give it all
to the Hollywood script. I'm betting emotionally on it, and
I'm in New York. I might as well enjoy the show.
I just again, he's cruising around that Knicks Ranger playoff games.
He's there out the gate, he's cruising around with teammates.
He's sticks. Get it to him in a little bit
of a divorce. I didn't do this with the Packers
(31:04):
because they didn't do it for me. Two point oh,
Aaron Rodgers, and I'm here for somebody won't financially panish it.
Speaker 4 (31:10):
From a all right, I love it.
Speaker 3 (31:12):
I love the energy to you know what, just after
that cell job, I don't know if I think I'm
gonna have to take the jets.
Speaker 4 (31:19):
I'm just a bit.
Speaker 7 (31:21):
I mean, let's go, gentlemen, thank you for having.
Speaker 4 (31:24):
Me on no doubt.
Speaker 3 (31:25):
Alex Monico FSG Betting Insider. You can get his insights
said more at Alex Underscore Monica on Twitter, the money
Line Monico podcast that's on the volume. Friend of the
show Colin Cowhard of course his boss there, but yeah,
Alex Monico, he is a complete nutjob.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app DJAY.
Speaker 3 (31:54):
The Tennessee Titans may not yet know who's playing quarterback,
as they have tried with desperation fact replaced that position
over the last two seasons.
Speaker 4 (32:04):
Another position that they've tried to replace Antonio Julio Brown.
Speaker 3 (32:12):
Hey, j Brown, I think that's for the first thing,
Actually is Antonio? However that that man, no, it's one
is his middle name if stands for one. Not However,
AJ Brown kind of got replaced by one Julio Jones
who couldn't stay healthy. Now the replacement for the Julio
Jones who couldn't stay healthy it now looks like to
be DeAndre Hopkins, who again missed what five six.
Speaker 4 (32:35):
Games early this season for Peds and also has a
little bit.
Speaker 5 (32:39):
Of trouble staying healthy and rarely practiced yeah, this laugh.
This move just made me laugh because it was almost
a desperation move by both parties.
Speaker 4 (32:47):
He only got a two year deal. He wasn't going
to get a big deal.
Speaker 5 (32:49):
It was only two teams that's really out you know
that was out wanting him and was actually seeking him.
Just signed to a contract to complain wide receiver there.
But if the telling me you're replacing AJ Brown with
Treylan Burks and with DeAndre Hopkins, I'm you know, I'm laughing.
I'm scratching my head and it's not gonna make them
any better. I think they're still gonna be a middle
(33:11):
of the road team there. I think Jacksonville wins that
division this year. Not sure what the coach will because
they have a rookie quarterback, and we know there's always
one rookie that surprises and plays well, and then there's
most rookies that kind of struggle at first and they start,
you know, one and five, oh and six in a
hole and you can tell where that season's going for them.
Speaker 4 (33:26):
But this puts Ryan Tanninghill on notice. Are you listening
to Ryan? Do you hear?
Speaker 3 (33:33):
Do you hear everybody that's that's been defending you and
saying that that you are good quarterback, as if you
know having Derrick Henry hasn't helped you out tremendously. I
do know in your last two home playoff games you've
thrown five interceptions. I don't want to hear about the
ball bouncing here, bouncing there. That's why it's oblong because
it bounces weird. But you gotta at least put the
(33:54):
ball where it's supposed to be, and you have not
done that. Mister Apple turnover, You're turning into Allen here
turning the football over. This is you want to talk
about an apple turnover? Just real quick. I'm sorry.
Speaker 4 (34:06):
I know where you're going is turning his bat over.
Speaker 3 (34:09):
I getting a bat flip for the age he's out
this thirty fifth home run of the season, seventy fifth RBI.
Look seven is I mean three to three right now,
bottom of the seventh.
Speaker 4 (34:19):
Two outs. How do the Angels lose this one? Well,
they lose it because they're the Angels.
Speaker 3 (34:23):
And what I'm saying, how do you think it goes
like wild pitch or something like that over the catcher's
half with the basis loaded at the top of the ninth,
like what because you have a like with the player
that Oldani just saw.
Speaker 4 (34:37):
It just goes against Angels history that they'll win this game, right, Yeah,
of course.
Speaker 3 (34:41):
Well, living out here in Los Angeles, we see it
time and time again, and that's why I say it
will shift a second away from DeAndre. But with showey Aitani,
I said this Saturday, if I'm the Angels number one.
Speaker 4 (34:51):
I'm not trading them. I'm sorry, guys, I'm just not
doing it.
Speaker 3 (34:54):
But when it comes time to put a contract on
the table, I'm gonna put numbers so astronomical in front
of this man and call us bluff.
Speaker 5 (35:01):
Say you really want to leave us. Okay, here's a
twelve year, seven hundred and fifty million dollar contract.
Speaker 4 (35:06):
You're gonna turn.
Speaker 5 (35:07):
That down to go possibly so called win somewhere, or
you can stay here. We'll move Mike Trot will build
around you, or maybe not build around you. But then
in twenty four months, when he's unhappy, still before he
turns thirty, just go ahead and nasc out and they'll
trade them again.
Speaker 4 (35:19):
You're still getting your money' still getting paid. But back
to my man.
Speaker 5 (35:22):
DeAndre Hopkins and the Tennessee Titans signed a two year
deal wide receiver position. Like I said, Ryan Tannehill, Sir, you,
my man, are seriously on notice.
Speaker 4 (35:32):
There's no excuses for you now. Now.
Speaker 5 (35:34):
I did tell you during a commercial break a few
segments ago. I wouldn't be surprised though, if DeAndre didn't
have a great season.
Speaker 4 (35:41):
Let me give you two Hall of Fame receivers.
Speaker 3 (35:45):
I'll be it a little later in their career, but
it was about the same time where Deandre's being traded there,
coming off of indrey and suspension. Two guys that got
traded there got signed there. Listen to these numbers they
put up there.
Speaker 5 (35:56):
Mister Julio Jones, who I was always infatuated and always
been a huge fan of ten games, thirty one catches,
four hundred and thirty four yards and one touchdown, and
one Randy Moss who also played eight games. They're only
starting four games, six catches, eighty yards, zero touchdowns. It
(36:17):
feels like this place is the place where good the
great receivers go for their career to crash and burn.
And it would not surprise me, Martin Weiss that by
week eight or nine, we're looking at this And I
said the same thing about Odell.
Speaker 3 (36:32):
These are two receivers. I think that they're not gonna
have the years that people are projecting them to half.
I think this is another one. I just show hell Ton.
This is just third straight games.
Speaker 5 (36:45):
Martin's been staring up at the screen the whole time.
I was on my little rant them what we.
Speaker 4 (36:49):
Have plenty of time to talk about Ryan Tannem, Yeah,
plenty of time. He's been on notice for the last
two years. They keep drafted quarterbacks.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
Tell you what, if they keep tying up a place
for radio hosts, I'd be like, hey, I'm looking over
my should. But but yeah, I mean this guy last
night home running the ninth inning, two nights ago, late
ending home run, this bottom of the seventh I mean clutch.
Speaker 4 (37:08):
I mean, geez, Louise Clutch. That right there. It just
I don't know what it is.
Speaker 3 (37:13):
There's something to mark about that to where it's like,
you know what you're making these runs scored at the
grant at the most important part of the game. And
then at the bottom of the third inning, I saw
he had a he ripped a double and Neto got
thrown out by half a mile at hole plate, and
it's just, you know, everybody's tweeting a free show. Hey
(37:34):
you Sometimes I'm like, yo, I get it, man, I mean, lord,
have mercy?
Speaker 5 (37:38):
Do you do that's absurd? Do you think he wins
cy Young and League MVP this year? No, don't, Brandon,
what do you think you think you ran?
Speaker 4 (37:49):
This is? This is your department? If I had to
bet on him, do you.
Speaker 5 (37:52):
Think he wins cy Young and MVP? He's leading most
categories as a starting pitcher, he's leading the most categories
at a as a hitter, Like, how how could he not?
Speaker 4 (38:05):
Right?
Speaker 8 (38:06):
I don't think he wins the cy Young, but he
wins the MVP for sure.
Speaker 5 (38:09):
So you think it's the MVP's got his name on it.
They've already engraved it.
Speaker 3 (38:14):
He would have to get he would have to get
hurt in his games, right, because if he's gonna play,
he's gonna do this right.
Speaker 5 (38:18):
If he's gonna play, he's gonna hit what fifty home runs?
You think this year he's gonna hit fifty on runs?
Speaker 4 (38:22):
He's at thirty five and win oh yeah, fifteen more
definitely we're only one seventy teams.
Speaker 5 (38:27):
Yeah, so he's gonna hit fifty seven I say, fifty
six fifty seven home runs? One twenty one thirty RBIs.
That's MVP right there. But I don't see how he wins.
Who's winning the sayo, who's winning? Say young Martin. If
it's not him, who's winning? Here's the smart bet?
Speaker 3 (38:43):
Look at American League guys Corey seeger A, Rose, Rainer, Wander,
Franco Boba, Schett. Maybe around that teams that are on
winning teams right that are successful. Because if Shoe hel
Tony gets traded to the National League, those odds are
(39:04):
going to drop like rocks.
Speaker 4 (39:08):
There's your play right there. That's the way to do it.
Speaker 3 (39:10):
That's the way to try to find an angle betting
around this Otani thing.
Speaker 4 (39:13):
That's that would be my wife's advice. Yeah, wei's the
wife's advice, would be the wie's advice.
Speaker 5 (39:20):
Wait, what he's doing, You're right, what he's doing is
just it's it's crazy because I think Otani's so good.
Speaker 4 (39:26):
I think people are waiting.
Speaker 3 (39:28):
For to fall apart, are waiting for it to become
average or become regular where you go. Okay, so maybe
he's not the best guy we've ever seen. He's good,
he's one of the greatest today.
Speaker 4 (39:38):
But yeah he's not.
Speaker 5 (39:39):
He's not up there with the rest of those guys.
I and every time you wait for that to happen,
it just doesn't. As you said, last three games home runs,
the one last night, I thought they won. I thought
I was happy to see that. I need the Angels
to beat the Astros. And of course they blew the
game last night. But he continues to rescue them, and
then the rest of the team just continues to let
him down.
Speaker 4 (39:57):
And I'm with you. You made a good point where you go.
You know, some days you're just like I get it, dude,
like get me out of here. I get it.
Speaker 5 (40:03):
But again, if I'm the front office man, I lay
a massive deal in front of h My call is bluff.
Speaker 3 (40:08):
But you do not trade him. You can't get equal
value for this guy at all. Speaking of a guy
that you could trade to throw as a market for
Let's get back to Ryan Tannehill. There is flow marketing
for Ry, of course, trade market that's why he is
still a tighten and they been trying like hell to
replace him since then.
Speaker 4 (40:23):
And you know what, just just look around.
Speaker 3 (40:25):
They've been trying to get rid of Ryan Tannehill for yeah,
however long, at least three years, you know, what they're
keeping the whole time, Derrick Henry.
Speaker 4 (40:33):
Rest my case pro running backs. Go ahead, Brandon, before
we get back into football.
Speaker 8 (40:37):
So last season, when Judge hit sixty two, he hit No.
Tany just hit number thirty five. Yeah, Judge did it
in ninety five games last year. The Angels are playing
their ninety fifth game tonight.
Speaker 4 (40:51):
Wow, that's a good find, that's a good fine. That's
money right there.
Speaker 5 (40:57):
You see what happened when you let the locks flow,
you take the heat off and you let the locks
flow your brain. Your brain can absorb more of all
that great knowledge that you have. Man, So you think
over sixty you think, O, Tani hit sixty this.
Speaker 8 (41:10):
Year, he's on pace to do what Judge did last
year right now?
Speaker 4 (41:13):
Currently, that's crazy, just what this guy does and what
he means. What do you what do you do? Brandon?
Speaker 5 (41:19):
You trade this guy? You you can't, right, I just
I'm not with that. You you can't, no, thank you,
you can't trade him. You gotta try to figure this
out if you're the front office there.
Speaker 4 (41:29):
But they don't seem like they want to win, right Mark.
They don't seem like they want to put a product.
Speaker 3 (41:33):
What are you doing I hear you're talking about you
can't trade it, but then you look at the rest
of the rush there and there's like there's nothing here,
there's nothing like, there's not like it's like it's not
like it's not like you can just have a replacement
level Why left fielders and first basement across the board,
like you could just run in and running back.
Speaker 4 (41:51):
Apparently you know what I'm saying, You're not gonna let
this run it back? They go.
Speaker 3 (41:56):
Because it just drives me crazy, I feel, because I
don't have a problem with the whole idea that like
like Miles Sanders not breaking the bank, Okay, Tony Pollard
not breaking the bank, but when you're the best of
the best at your position, you should be paid like it.
Speaker 4 (42:10):
Otherwise that's how you end up with some.
Speaker 3 (42:12):
Man of these salary type of arguments, because like I
would not want to walk in knowing that at times
I took snapback at.
Speaker 4 (42:19):
Quarterback in New York. If I'm Sakuon Barkley and now
I gotta sit there and look at Daniel Jones bump
self take all the snaps for forty million dollars a year, and.
Speaker 3 (42:29):
It's like it just it just drives me crazy, man,
Like you look at the different ways that teams strip fail,
like we're talking about copycat league and so on. Look
at how everybody fails. Look at what happened with the
Dolphins last year.
Speaker 4 (42:42):
They would have beaten the.
Speaker 3 (42:44):
Buffalo Bills with Josh Allen, who was the presumptive af
AFCMVP for.
Speaker 4 (42:50):
The first five weeks of the season. They would have
beaten them if they had just been able to run
the ball a little bit more. Tyler Thompson, No, but
that's not the point. The point is people get hurt.
Speaker 3 (43:01):
The point is your quarterback may just may get bopped
on the head and be out for a while.
Speaker 4 (43:07):
Okay, that could happen your quarterback.
Speaker 3 (43:09):
And you know what happens if your quarterback is hurt,
not getting Maybe if you're Bill Pollion, like he said
many years ago, famously, we don't practice it up Peyton
because we would be aft and we don't practice ft. Okay,
understand that. If you got Patrick Mahomes, get it. If
you got you know, But like too, I'm sorry, I
(43:29):
don't put him in the same class. I don't put
him in that. Is he a very good quarterback? Absolutely?
Is he one that is at the top of the top. No, no, no,
he's not there yet. No, so run the day old ball.
Speaker 5 (43:41):
And when they did have a commitment to running the ball,
they did run it well, they just didn't do it enough.
And I thought, you know, as you and I talked
about before, I thought mcdaie was trying to prove that
his quarterback, his quarterback, was the guy. How long do
you think sa Kwan and Josh Jacobs hold out? Do
you think they show up at all? I think Josh
