(00:51):
the Commanders forty to twenty on TNF, not rate showing
by the Commanders. Who wants to play a game? Who's
ready for every? Ready for a game? Harmon?
Speaker 3 (01:01):
You ready?
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Always? Are you ready? Yes? Absolutely? Patrick Tyshert. You guys
ready all right? I am going to read you this incendiary,
incendiary quote, and your job is very simply tell me
who said it Okay, okay, this is postgame commanders way.
We had everybody talk after the game post game tonight,
(01:23):
we played with no intensity or fire. We didn't compete
in the first half and got down twenty seven to three.
It was too big of a hole to climb out of.
That's why we ended up losing.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
Ring. Yeah. Well, I don't recall Sam Howell tweeting right
after the games, so it is I think the keyword
there is we tonight we played, so it's gonna be
no intensity or fire.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
We didn't compete in the first half, got down twenty
seven to three heading into halftime, too big of a
hole to climb out of, and that's why we ended
up here. Eric B enemy Eric all right, Harmon's Harmon's
guest is Eric B enemy? Okay, all right? Joe Thaisman
or or the new owner that Joe sigh, somebody who
would say we okay, So who do you want? You
get one guess, you don't get two guesses. Who's the
(02:06):
new owners? I want Jeffrey Lourie. I wanted you want
to say Harris? Yeah, okay, Harry.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
I mean they did say the press box food was
better under the new ownership, so we got that going.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Hey, anytime you can feed me the losses a little
bitter stuff better. Yeah, yeah, So to speak, all right, Patrick,
who said it, I'm gonna school with Riverboat Ron, riverboat Rod. Okay,
so we have your guess was Oh wait, this was
a tweet. This wasn't Prescotte. It just wait until the end,
waiting until the end. Harman said the enemy, you said,
(02:36):
Josh Harris, you said riverboat Ron, ty shirt. I know
I'm going to ask you a question about sports is
something you don't know anything about. But do you have
a guess?
Speaker 4 (02:43):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (02:43):
Of course that is a magic Johnson tweet? Yeah, what'd
you think I was gonna know tonight? We played with
no intensity or fire. We didn't compete in the first
half and got down twenty seven to three heading in
the halftime.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
It was too big of a hole to climb out
of and that's why we ended up losing. That is
a magic let's go we very nice. That is team
owner ty magic john right. Not tell me how did
you know that? Did you? How did you know that?
Speaker 5 (03:13):
I didn't tell any of Yeah, how did you know that?
Because that's the only game I know we played. There's
no way that's a Magic John's actually young, is it really?
Speaker 1 (03:24):
Yeah? I just said I was messing around like eight
seconds ago. I said that was a Magic Johnson for
the night.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Can you play the layoff the Weed song?
Speaker 1 (03:35):
You were looking at me when I said that, we
all clapped. I just don't believe you all the all
clapped that you got it right. I thought you were
just piping me out. I can't lie on the radio.
That was just a good punchline, which is which it was,
and it just so happened to also be true.
Speaker 5 (03:49):
That is I swung in the darken hit. That's also
say Magic Johnson. That's deep and it's not playing you
feel if you're.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
The Commanders, you go you see magic on Yeah, we
played with no one pens in your fires.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
That reminds me when the McDonald's famed founder became the
San Diego Padres owner and took over them, and on
opening night he was in attendance and they had another
awful Padres game. He actually got on the PA microphone
live in the stadium and apologize to the fans between
innings and said, this is some of the worst ball
(04:20):
play I've ever seen in my life. And people started cheering.
That was very croket Yeah. Wow, Magic should have taken
the microphone tonight at halftime.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
I dig that. Can you imagine he did that? At
Mets games every night? Would be Hey, who wants to
be the celebrity we suck guy tonight? Who wants to
be that guy? You kidding?
Speaker 3 (04:37):
They'd line up like they do to fire cannons, light cauldrons,
and whatever else. Listen to the NFL and sports in general.
I'm not a great public speaker.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
That's okay. We have a template you can just follow
and just insert and insert there. Okay, Hey, I'm sorry
to see that the Mets played so poorly tonight and
we got a bad effort from Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonzo.
Come out tomorrow and we'll have a better game because
code is Sengo. We'll be pinching for us. Thank you,
Drive safely tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
Same announcement, Jerry Seinfield. Next night, same announcement, Julius Stiles,
just keep.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Going down the little actually done and TJ there are
ten things we hated about tonight's game to Washington Commanders,
fantastic movie, no question about it.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Likewise, the founder Micha o'keaton. Okay, all right, and how
he's screwed over Nick Offerman?
Speaker 1 (05:29):
Was that scene in the movie. Did not have the
see the movie when it went he didn't call the
baseball before the drama. It would have been a great scene.
Oh wow, all right, thank you, Steve. I appreciate it, buddy.
That was wow. That's a Magic Johnson. Sweet. How about
Steve Harmon can take the night off? I got this?
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Wow, you're good.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Now I got good. Okay. Uh so Steve ty Shirt,
who has done an update before he has he can
do your update at the bottom of the hour. Is
it going to be involving Magic Johnson? Only it will
listen because he you know, we had a challenge with
Fenley last week and they were they were either gonna
throw he got a little chippy and it kind of
kind of escalated. Yeah, and I said, listen to you
guys instead of blades, Let's just have ty Shirt do
(06:07):
an update any of the update at the bottom of
the hour. And was it fine? I'm looking at how like,
did we get did we get taken off the air?
Speaker 5 (06:16):
No?
Speaker 1 (06:17):
Did people did people get scores? Yes? Did they get
all the correct scores? I don't think so.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
So what a listener heard is what you're saying is.
And now tonight's baseball scores six to three, five to one,
four to two.
Speaker 5 (06:30):
Surprisingly, Steve way Better, I called QB Simeon for some updates.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Yes he did, Yes, he did say. Yeah, the Jets
signed QB Simeon. That's what it was. It was, good Man, Well,
QB Simeon and wide receiver Claypool will be out this week.
But he's just he's just on ESPN dot com. Read
in the headlines wide receiver Claypool. That's exactly what I did. Yet, meanwhile,
he had the double bird up in the general direction.
(06:55):
Take that, Hey, Frostburg, what does QB mean next to
a guy's name? Oh? QB Simeon signed by Jets. Did
he use all those Tom Looney verbs that he used
to use with the baseball No, no, no, no no no,
ty Shirt, Well, I don't think he had any verbs.
I didn't punk Stan anybody. Verbless update. It was a
verbless Sitani the Phils tonight four three Dodgers six three
(07:16):
Mets like that. So he would give the score, you know,
Phillies ate five padres No.
Speaker 5 (07:21):
I actually did some like ponies I was like the
Angels doing their best Dodger impersonation tonight, winning out whatever
it was.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
But no, he did.
Speaker 5 (07:27):
He had some good stuff, just like that, winning at
whoever it was. Yeah, that was a yeah, the Dodgers
winning whoever. I basically said, I look it up on
your phone, you know, I saw them again. I can't
click on the box score and see you they play?
What does col mean? Colorado?
Speaker 1 (07:38):
All right? Right?
Speaker 6 (07:39):
Right?
Speaker 2 (07:39):
What?
Speaker 1 (07:39):
What what are all these three letters?
Speaker 2 (07:41):
What?
Speaker 1 (07:41):
What what means? They've called the game? What is LAA?
What does that mean?
Speaker 4 (07:45):
What?
Speaker 1 (07:45):
What? What is n y y? I don't know what.
Speaker 6 (07:47):
You know.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
If he was working tonight, he would say, you know,
Mets general manner of competitor resigned, no chance of getting Otani.
Now yeah, did he sign Otani in the first place?
Speaker 6 (07:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (07:58):
Yeah, yeah yeah. Now Billy up, Yeah, this is not
this is not going well. No, no, no, it's the
Mets can't have nice things. That's because that's what happens.
Billy brew.
Speaker 4 (08:11):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (08:11):

of Justin Field's part of this night tonight is absolutely fascinating.
(08:32):
We'll have more on that coming up in a few minutes.
But the Commanders losing it home to the Bears, that's
that's tough, man, that's a that's a tough spin at
home on a short week, and you don't just lose,
you just get boat race. I thought the Bears would
win this game. I did not see this coming, letting
down people like me. You picked up the Washington Commanders defense. Hey,
I'm gonna start to match by you. That awful. I
(08:54):
think they had a couple of sacks though, right, yeah,
but I think in the one league all the points
they allowed at it's eight what I got from DJ Moore.
DJ Moore gave me forty nine, and I think the
Commanders is gonna be negative forty nine. No, I he
got three sacks, yeah, okay, but he allowed forty points.
He allowed four points, he allowed forty Well, what's that
worth in the league anymore. He used to be more punitive.
(09:17):
It's not gonna be anything. At least I could say, hey,
I got a DJ Moore and the Commander's defense. I
got forty nine feeling for your feeling. Yeah, no dollar
cost averaging, you're feeling pretty good. I like that. It's
like me, I was all excited.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
I've got a team that had fields and after the
first half, I'm like, upset special coming and then they
basically scored nothing.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
But look, this is a game where and I could
give you a big sunny side for the Commanders because yes,
it's forty to twenty, but this was a game that
turned forever in the bears favor. They're up thirty to
twenty and the Commanders are coming back in the second half,
and with about six minutes left to go on the game,
Joey Slide misses an easy, makeable forty two yard field
(09:58):
goal that would have made it a one touchdown, would
have been thirty to twenty three, and suddenly everything is
there because the Bears offense in the second half wasn't
that great. They're trouble moving the football. Khalil Herbert got hurt,
you know, Justin Field's finding out I can't throw the
ball to Dj Moore on every single play, but he
misses that field goal and things went downhill, right, They
turn the ball over on downs, the Bear's got another
(10:19):
long touchdown to Dj Moore and that was it. But
I will say this if I am Washington, You're two
and three. Okay, You're in a tough, tough division because
the Cowboys are good and the Eagles are super Bowl team. Okay,
But I feel good because right now I can say,
and this is where things all start, you have the
right guy at quarterback. The Commanders have the right guy
(10:41):
at quarterback because Sam Howell is legit. You saw him
go on a heater in the second half and he
was making throws in between defenders, holding onto the ball
while while he's getting sandwich between guys behind the line
of scrimmage, escaping making plays with his legs. He's a
leading rusher for the Commanders tonight. Sam Howell is legit
and he's a guy that makes plays. And I saw
(11:02):
him make plays at North Carolina. Look, we've talked a
lot about how he was really underdrafted because he had
a poor senior season, when if he had a good
senior year, he could have gone in the first round,
could have been a top five pick, but the Commanders
did the right thing with him. They let him sit
last year. Hey you're not really gonna play next year,
is what we're looking at the kind of an old way.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
Well, remember though Rivera was I don't think he was
kidding when he kind of incredulously said, I wish I
would have thought about it earlier.
Speaker 1 (11:29):
Yeah, yeah, oh no, no, yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
I think he recognized there might have been some life
in this squad had they made that move. But here
we are in twenty twenty three and he's acquitted himself
pretty nicely. And even in a game where the normal
suspects in the usual suspects in your receiving corps, the
big names didn't have big impact. He's only had one
(11:53):
bad game, and it was an awful game against the Bills.
They lost thirty seven to three. He threw four picks.
Speaker 1 (11:58):
The rest of the season is six touchdowns, two picks.
His quarterback grating is up at one hundred. That's pretty good.
I feel I am pretty confident that you have the
next starting quarterback for your team for the next couple
of years, at least now. You hope that Sam Howell
continues to progress. But what I've seen from him, you know,
because a guy like following him, like I watch ACC
football because so you don't have to seeing him go
(12:20):
from from North Carolina to the NFL. He's someone that, yes,
he can get hot, he can have a quarter where
it looks awful and I go, man, Caroline's gonna lose
this game. They're gonna lose this game, you know, forty
five to three, and then suddenly he can't miss. And
that's kind of who Sam Howell is. And he looks
like when he plays, he looks like a good, a
(12:40):
good Carson Wentz, Like when Carson Wentz was good, you
know seven years ago when he was on Cuss on
the Custom winning the MVP, but he got hurt. The
Eagles of course go on to win the Super Bowl.
But when Carson Wentz was good, that's kind of what
he looks like. He stands big in the pocket, He's
able to maneuver himself and extend plays a little bit.
He's able to run when he needs to. He can
put punishing hits on defenders, but he needs to slide
(13:02):
a little bit more. Watching I kind of get a
pete Carson Wentz vibe from him, and that's pretty good.
So even though you lost, it's two and three. You
lost the Bears embarrassing. We started two and oh, now
we're two and three. You have the quarterback, you have
the guy, and now you can build around him. That's
a guy. I would almost rather have that than have
to be a team like I say, boy, the Jets
have everything, but you don't have a quarterback, so you
(13:22):
ain't gonna win. I would almost rather have a quarterback
and say, okay, let's put stuff around him. Because we
have a quarterback, you always have a chance.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
Well, you look at it the way team's constructed, and
the Bears did a good job, and Brian Robinson didn't
have the impact certainly that I anticipated coming into the game.
The Bears defense held up strong up front for most
of the night. But when you look at how throwing
on the run, he plays much bigger than six to
one right, looks much bigger. Oh yeah, yeah, been six
(13:50):
to one right and getting big. You know what would
you say? The thick body getting to the edge right
and so able to withstand hits to your point, and
you got to know when when to live for the
next play and he'll learn that over time. You got McLaurin,
you got Logan Thomas when he's healthy, he's a difference
(14:12):
maker at tight end. We talk about that position all
the time based on how great you know the best are.
And happy birthday to you, Travis Kelcey thirty four years old,
you know the same.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
Age as Gronk. Let's ponder that a minute.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
But the idea that you've got a very top heavy position.
Speaker 1 (14:29):
You know, when we look at Kelsey and.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
Andrews, whatever, Logan Thomas when he's sound, is in that
next tier of guys, at least from my eye watching
the game. So you've got him and Dotson has started
to really ascend a bit, So you've got some talent
around him. If the offensive lion holds the form, howel's
a guy that has the arm, has the accuracy. We
(14:53):
saw a number of pinpoint throws down the field, and
it's like trying to evaluate fields against the Broncos last week.
You take some of it with a grain of salt
because this is not a good defense the bears right
and the secondary. You saw what he was able to
do start moving the ball second half and creating chunk plays.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
Et cetera. But there's a lot to grow on and
a lot that Eric b Enemy's got to be happy
to work with. As they move towards the middle of
the season, they're gonna be dangerous for a lot of teams.
They're gonna be just good enough to muck up the East,
I think a little bit as the season rolls on. So, yeah,
you've got your quarterback, and you got him at a song,
right he was a Day three guy. Yeah. Look, and
(15:35):
that's a great way to say. Is Washington gonna be
a playoff contender? Probably not? But are they gonna be
a tough out of team? Like, boy, hey, any given week,
if you're not ready or if you know, Sam Howell
can torch that defense. And this is still not really
a commander's team that, like I said, you got to
surround him a little bit more talent, you know, wide receiver.
You think, well, are you okay? Like, is Brian Robinson
(15:57):
really that good? Right? Is Dotson really that next level? Guys?
Is McLaurin really that It's hard to say, well, because
they have they seem to have weapons right now that Hey,
they're good, They're probably good enough to not be replaced,
But are they good enough to be at the top level.
It's kind of a weird thing, you know, it's a
weird it's a weird spot. Lauren's a guy that it's
it's a tough read because you talk to some and
(16:20):
read what some NFL evaluators are like, he's a top
ten talent, So it's like, all right, how do you
coax that out of him? What do you got to do?
Speaker 3 (16:27):
Do you get that week to week dominance that you
you do see flashes of from time and time. Yeah,
it's a tough spot to be and when you're good
enough to say, all right, we don't need to we
don't need to get an upgrade on it, because it's
really difficult. But at the same time, it's you have
a lot of guys who are a lot better and
they're not there, so it's hard to say we have
the playmakers we need.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
It's it's definitely it's a tough spot.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
Well, one on the other side of the ball, you
got a great defensive line when they're healthy, but your
back end still needs a lot of work. So, uh,
what do you give them an eye for incomplete? Oh,
sug you got dominated by not bears.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
You got but you got Sam. I feel that that
you're you're starting with Sam Sam. Sam's finally a guy
named Sam is good in the NFL. A quarterback named Sam.
How about that? Sam SAMs Hams Hams And I'm telling
you couldn't go without the drive by on your boy,
Sam Darnold. Could you feel good because Sam Howell is legit? Uh?
Twitter at how about a fresco? Mike gets swollen down
(17:20):
The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon
Coming up next, Yeah, we have a big bit on
Justin Fields and DJ Moore, The Unbelievable night they had tonight,
plus one team looking for blood this weekend in the NFL.
Who is it? It's next right here, Jason and Mike Fox.
Speaker 2 (17:40):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (17:55):
The Jason Smith Show with My bess friend Mike Harmon.
This is we are not talking about Deon Sanders. I
feel like, you know, tyser plays is thinking we're gonna
talk about Dedann Sanders. Yeah, talking about We're not talking
about Deon Sanders. We got no reason to. We're not
talking about Dan Sanders because I got it all right,
you want just okay, just for a little bit, just
for a second, just for a second. As we told you,
(18:18):
how fast it goes from being all anybody could talk
about to page eight eight, right or d eight of
the sports section. This is what happens in college football.
When you lose a couple of games. You can lose
one game, you can stay relevant. You lose two games,
you're out because no matter how interesting you are, we
(18:40):
care about who's going to the national championship, who's going
to the playoff? Right, that's we care about. And while
Colorado was the talk of college football unlike any other
team we have seen in maybe twenty years, where are
they now? Because they'd lost a couple of games. And
here here's your proof. I guarantee you the average college
football fan if I said, yeah, yeah, yeah, last week
(19:01):
went out, Yeah Colorado they lost the USC week before,
Yeah they lost Oregon. What's Colorado doing this week? Who
are they playing this week? And the average fans is
going to go, uh, I don't know. Right, That's how
fast it happens in college football, right, that's how fast
it goes for Colorado from Hey, I can't wait, I
can't wait. Who are they played this week? Oh? Oh yeah, yeah?
(19:24):
Oh so we're still still talking about Colorade. Okay we're
still yeah, all right, I guess I mean that. But
that's how we got It's true, don't know where he's
Where are they playing this week? They're playing this week? Right,
That's kind of that's kind of how it.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
Goes because the schedule the next couple of weeks actually
allows for style points.
Speaker 1 (19:42):
Yes, now they get to the easier part of their right,
they get into a place where they get to again
a couple of highlight reels. Yeah, and in theory Travis
Hunter comes back, you can you can start winning a
couple of games, start stacking a couple of wins. Now
you're not gonna win, You're not going to the playoff anymore.
You just need one more to back your betters. Yeah,
you just because it was three and a half. Three
(20:04):
and a half, so you just need one more. Well,
look the next couple of weeks and this week you're
they're at Arizona State. Till everybody I know, you're at
Arizona State. Who's got one win this year, and then
you're playing Stanford, so that could be a couple of wins,
then a little bit tougher against UCLA Oregon State, but
then you have Arizona. Then at the end of the
season it gets a little bit more difficult. So you
can maybe if you get hot, stack a couple wins
(20:25):
here the next two or three weeks and at least
a were We're we're on track being Bowl eligible. We're
feeling really good about this. We've turned it around. Remember
we still won one game last week, but the overall
national conversation of Colorado because I'm telling you, the average
nobody knows who they care. They lost their second game
to USC done. See you, it's how it goes.
Speaker 3 (20:43):
Just now a question of how whether the cavalcade of
Stars still shows up in Boulder or on the road
with them, right, I mean, that's just it so all
about how do you stay hot in the press?
Speaker 1 (20:57):
Hey, man, I was there for you this week. N
I got something else to do. But he said you
were gonna be there. Yeah, be lost last week. In
the last two weeks, I mean, I can't make it
this week, man, Sorry about that.
Speaker 3 (21:09):
Look man, I mean we're sag after still on strike,
so I can't talk about any projects in the cans.
So I mean, what am I really doing there? So
you know what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna get some
long work done and then well, I mean, I gotta
start decorating for Halloween.
Speaker 1 (21:25):
Man, I don't know what do you want.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
Me to do?
Speaker 1 (21:28):
So from a lack of relevancy now to a team
that is incredibly relevant and two players unbelievably relevant after
the nights they had. Tonight the Bears win forty to twenty.
How did the night go for Justin Fields and DJ Moore? Well,
it kind of went like this, safety's.
Speaker 6 (21:43):
Your back, corners tight, step back the fields field's looking
now growing got open that DJ Moore end zone touchdown
touchdown pairs toasted the secondary. He had a twenty yard
strike his third touchdown pass commented motion now paired and
left slot snapped the fields roche on the back, gonna
throw left side of the end zone up in the air,
(22:05):
contested catch touchdown.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
E J.
Speaker 2 (22:09):
Moore want to return.
Speaker 6 (22:11):
To Maryland for the former first round pick of Carolina
and the new Bear breaking hearts here in Washington. E
eleven yard touchdown out of beauty tight end right side
of the bye, Mercedes, Lewis and Tanner scout out to
the right, snapfield stairs down the left side, passing.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
His coup by More down.
Speaker 6 (22:28):
The sidelines, and nothing but green grass. He is gone
baby touchdown DJ Moore and third and two.
Speaker 1 (22:37):
So there was back to back to back touchdown Chef Jonian.
They missed one on that Bears radio network because I
still can't wait to see the play they called DJ
Moore out of bounds on when it looked like he
was clearly in bounds, and they blew the whistle stopping
a play that would have been his fourth touchdown, and
Amazon never showed the replay of it, never showed the angle.
(22:58):
I know you're gonna get access to the all twenty two,
probably probably the next twenty minutes. Take a look. Yeah,
probably the next twenty minutes, because and that it's it
looked like an unbelievably bad call to blow the whistle
on DJ Moore, where you know, look at me. I
have fifty fantasy points. I wanted seven more. I wanted
seven for a few more. But this is the deal.
(23:20):
And there is absolutely a correlation between Justin Fields two
weeks ago saying I get coached too much, and coaching
is for the week, but on the weekend we're playing,
I gotta just go out and be me. And we
talked about that for a lot. We talked about that
(23:42):
a lot about Justin Field saying this and and it
was an awful optic for him, but we said it
at the time because it's like, dude, you can't make
it seem like you don't want to be coached. I mean,
you're a quarterback now. You know when you go up
in front of the media, say what you want to say?
What did you really want to say? Hey, during the week,
I got to take the game plan in with me
and we go in and game plan. But sometimes I
(24:02):
see things during the game or a play where I
need to do certain things that I need to do instinctually.
What is the right thing to do. I gotta be
able to play fast and I can't. I can't play
slow because that's what happens. Sometimes you feel like you're
getting coached too much. Now and he said that it
would have been fine, but the way he said it was, Yeah,
I don't want to be coached, like I don't want
guys coach me. And that's an awful optic and that's
(24:23):
an or or audioic whatever because he said it. But
since he said that, we've gotten an unbelievable Justin Fields
the last two weeks sure right out tied for the
league lead and touchdown pass. It's he's been a different
guy like that, and you know that the Bears did
something behind the scenes, whether it because we haven't heard
(24:44):
about We never got Matt eberflu saying hey, I hear
Justin Fields and we're gonna work on this, and we're
gonna work on that. No, you got, Hey Justin had
you know, Justin's frustrated, but Justin hasn't. We love him,
oh everything, but you know behind the scenes that was
a power struggle and now like Justin Field's won because
you know they did something to allow him to either
(25:05):
you know, audible in and out of plays or hey,
on this, you can you can keep the ball if
you want to. If you don't see a read right here,
you don't need to stay in the pocket as much.
Whatever it was, he's loosened up and you've seen plays
tonight where he would he's back to the Justin Fields
he was a year ago where there was two plays
within a five play span in the first half. These
(25:26):
are just these are just plays that get lost in everything.
But there was a design run called for him to
the right on a sweep and it just wasn't there.
And instead of going down or going out of bounds,
which is what he would have done the first couple
of weeks, he stops, cuts back, comes back to the
middle of field, goes forward and gains three yards. So
instead of losing three yards, he gains three yards because
(25:46):
he's playing loose. And the same thing happened a couple
of plays later where he was in the pocket, it
looked like he would design run to towards the middle
of the field. He cuts outside and he runs for
a first down. Like these are plays that he wasn't
making earlier on in the season. So you know, something happened.
And if you're looking at where the balance of power is,
it's justin fields over Matt Eberflus, Because now suddenly here's
(26:07):
justin fields saying I don't need to be coach like that,
I need something else, And now here's justin field succeeding.
So who looks like they're right now in the grand
scheme of things of the Bears, The Matt Eberflus way
or the Justin Field's way, because you know there's still
button heads on things, so it looks like it's Justin
Fields is the guy. And now you know they win
this week, so everything is great for the Bears, it's
great for Ibraflus. But now you know, if it comes
(26:28):
down to it in a couple of weeks and the
Bears keep losing, who's gonna win that power struggle? Justin
Field is gonna win that power struggle because now he
looks like he's getting back on the way he was
to being the player he was last year, and maybe
even a little bit better passer as well. I mean
four touchdowns from him, I mean that's for a guy
that couldn't throw the football. As you said, now he's
tied for the lead touchdown.
Speaker 3 (26:46):
But but the last couple of weeks, what we've seen,
and even going back to the opener, going up against
Green Bay and going the first couple of weeks of
this year, is they had success red zone. They just
didn't see a lot of red zone ess. They had
success going downfield, they just didn't do it a bunch
and so more aggressive, more decisive with the football, more
(27:08):
design runs and only had eight through the first four
weeks of the season, which is just wrong. So you
have the come to Jesus kind of moment with Eberflus.
I don't want him going anywhere near a microphone. I
don't think if I'm Bears fans or some of the
people in that building.
Speaker 1 (27:25):
Because one of the big things that we talked about
and to start the week was when he met the
press after Sunday's loss to Denver, it just sounded like
he had no answers for anything. They did twenty straight
peppering him on the Chase Claypool situation, and he had
no good answer, right obfuscated lied. You could just say
(27:49):
he lied flat out about whatever was going on behind
the scenes in terms of was he told to stay away,
did he decide to stay away, what's going on here?
All of that, and it just became it made you
look like a joke. Whatever the on field stuff is, look,
you deal with that, But when you show no command
of something that's really easy to get with your PR
(28:10):
person and your GM and say what's our statement on this,
I be done with it. You start getting to voted
no confidence. And in his case, he's also the g
you know, the de facto defensive coordinator with Williams. We
still don't know what happened there, but yeah it's Luke getzie.
You guys go figure it out.
Speaker 3 (28:26):
We got to figure out the defensive side of things
because we just gave up a game that we were
up twenty eight to seven on a hapless Denver squad.
You guys go figure out what didn't work in the
fourth quarter and be decisive with the football. Get the
ball out, DJ Moore. You saw ten targets tonight and
the only other people to catch passes were the two
(28:46):
tight ends. So that's something that needs to be remedied.
Speaker 1 (28:49):
Baby, you gotta take two weeks eight touchdowns. I think
you're okay.
Speaker 3 (28:53):
No, no, And that's the larger thing right when we
start looking at the Bear schedule going forward. Home date
against the Vikings, no on my birthday?
Speaker 1 (29:02):
How about that? Oh look at you?
Speaker 3 (29:05):
And then the Raiders in Chicago the following week, two
wins potentially on the board. Sure, then they come out
here to so far against the Chargers eber Flews versus Staley,
let's go.
Speaker 1 (29:18):
You could be looking at home field advantage throughout the playoffs,
but legitimately, legitimately, And I say, and I say, they
just looking at the schedule.
Speaker 3 (29:25):
And then the Saints. It's on the road, but not
the Saints. They haven't scored twenty points in a game yet.
So and then you've got the Panthers. Like you go
all the way through to November nineteenth, a date with
the Lions. The next five as horrible as things looked
and the optics were awful, the next five suddenly appear
like you should at least have a puncher's chance. Yeah,
(29:47):
you go win these games, and you're believing in Justin
Fields again. And the main thing with him, and we talked,
we've talked about this, is that when a quarterback comes
to the NFL, now, he's fully the guy he is,
he's fully formed, he's a project. He comes to the
league now and this is who he is.
Speaker 1 (30:03):
Well, except for a couple of these Richards and whatever. Limited.
But that's where you have to bang out the dents
on a guy. You have to just saying but we're
not but we're not going to turn you into a
pocket passer in something you're not. Wh's what the Bears
try to do with Justin Fields. If the guy makes
the plays, getting outside, making plays with his legs, throwing
(30:24):
on the run, and keeping plays alive and and and
basically having street plays, which is Roethlisberger did that great
for his entire career. Nobody said anything Badthlisberger's right, No,
he keeps plays alive, It makes play broken plays are great. Right.
You don't care how the football gets down the field.
It gets down there. But that's the that's the mistake
that teams make all the time is that we take
a quarterback and we want to do a little too
(30:46):
much to him instead of saying, all right, who is
the guy, Let's design an offense around him, and let's
bang out the dents. Because I guarantee you the Colts
they just want to bang out the dents on Anthony Richardson, Dude,
slide a little bit, get a little more accurate throwing
the football. But we don't want you to change in
all who you are. And the Bears try to change
justin fields. And luckily, at least now it didn't get
too too late, because the last couple of weeks have
(31:07):
been fantastic for the guy that's justin Field's that's Bears.
It's how you do it in the NFL can't remake
a quarterback. I'd be a great head coach right now.
A guy's a great update anchor is not here tonight,
So instead we have Steve Desager with what's trending in
the wide world of sports.
Speaker 4 (31:22):
As soon as you mentioned that Bear schedule, that is
the National Sunday Night game at the end of October,
s Bear's at Chargers, and it's a couple of days
before Halloween, which of course made me think, scanty kids,
Fedy scid t me the old SATV.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
Nicely done, he scanty? How about this?
Speaker 4 (31:41):
And well I have two stats of the night, if
that's if you'll allow me both. First off, DJ Moore,
you mentioned the dominant Chicago wins forty to twenty at
Washington tonight.
Speaker 1 (31:50):
Stats Inc.
Speaker 4 (31:51):
Says this is a first in NFL history tonight that
a guy in a single game had at least eight catches,
at least three touchdowners receptions, and average twenty eight yards
per catch. Remember, in the opening minute he at a
fifty eight yard reception.
Speaker 1 (32:07):
That kind of excuse things.
Speaker 4 (32:08):
They eventually had eight receptions, two hundred and thirty yards
and three scores. So as a Bears lead early second
quarter of seventeen to nothing. Pro Football Focus says, from
about mid second quarter until the end of the game,
the Washington Commanders dropped back to pass fifty five straight
times without a designed run. You talk about lack of
(32:31):
design runs in the pass for Chicago, this was the
most for a team that they have data for going
back fifteen plus years. Fifty five straight times in an
NFL game they've dropped back.
Speaker 1 (32:43):
To pass, and yes they lost.
Speaker 4 (32:46):
Sam Hal did get credits if you want to call
it that, for four rushing attempts. Brian Robinson six carries
ten yards for the Commanders. Sam Hall finished thirty seven
of fifty one passing three hundred eighty eight yards, two touchdowns,
one interception. This is Washington offense that had three first
downs by late first half. Logan Thomas in the loss
(33:08):
nine receptions seventy seven yards, one touchdown, one fumble, DJ
Moore the Star and four touchdown passes from justin fields.
By the way, he only had fifteen completions fifteen of
twenty nine, but two hundred and eighty two yards and
four touchdowns. So the Bears, who were zero and four
get a w against the team with the w on
(33:29):
the helmet. The Bears had lost fourteen straight games going
back almost a full year, and this w came on
the day of the death of Dick Buckets, Hall of
Fame linebacker Bears legend, died at the age of eighty.
He's not only in the Pro Football Hall of Fame,
He's in the college football Hall of Fame because he
starred at Illinois.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
He was born in Chicago.
Speaker 4 (33:47):
Dick Buckets was a Pro bowlers first eight seasons, all
with the Bears. In college, he played linebacker and center.
Won a Rose Bowl with Illinois in his NFL career,
no playoff games. In fact, the Chicago Bears in his
last five five years had a record of twenty and
forty nine. News from the College World first Off Friday night,
FS one has a game Nebraska at Illinois. New TarHeels
(34:09):
wide receiver Tesz Walker is now eligible to play this year.
He had transferred twice. The NCAA said that North Carolina
failed to provide pertinent info before Saturday. Maryland will be
playing at number four Ohio State on Fox TV noon
Eastern time. FS one will have the baseball playoffs, all
five all four best of five division series starts Saturday,
(34:31):
FS one as American League this year, so it'll have
Texas at Baltimore, then Minnesota at Houston on both Saturday
and Sunday. The Orioles with a one seed in the
AL this season. The Astros on the final day of
the regular season last Sunday, stole the two seed and
got a first round by in the National League Atlanta,
we'll be hosting the Phillies starting this weekend. Braves, the
(34:53):
one seed dominant this year. Dodgers two seed coming off
of bye, will be in action hosting with Clayton Kersher
on the mound hosting Arizona. Then it's Bobby Miller in
Game two against the Diamondbacks. So I assume lance Lynn
Game three at Arizona next week. Lance Lynn led the
major leagues in home runs allowed.
Speaker 1 (35:11):
Way, Yeah, what's the overrunner for home runs in that game? Eleven? Well,
it was forty four on the season, so I'd say
at least four in the game. All right, four? They okay?
Speaker 4 (35:19):
So next Wednesday, you know, biking that preview of coming
attractions there. Mets general manager Billy Eppler resigned NBA MVP
Joel mb to Philadelphia will play for the US at
next summer's Paris Olympics.
Speaker 1 (35:31):
Not for France. Minnesota won its preseason.
Speaker 4 (35:34):
Game in Abu Dhabi today, beating Dallas won eleven to
ninety nine, although Luka Doncic in seventeen minutes had twenty
five points in this game. And congrats again to the Bears.
I saw a list from AP about coaches that have
lost at least fourteen straight games with their team. This
is in the whole Super Bowl era fifty plus years.
Of course, you got John McKay of the expansion Tampa
(35:55):
Bay Bucks. After all that USC success, he started zero
to twenty six first two full years with Tampa Bay.
Rod Marinelli Lyons on the list nineteen straight ls, but
Matt Eberfluss stuck on fourteen gets.
Speaker 1 (36:09):
A w tonight take him off the list. Back to you,
Thanks a bunch, Steve, I appreciate it, my friend. Coming
up next, boy, do we have a hot take to
run by you coming off of this game tonight? Hop
you go this hot We got a for your next Fox.

have accorded to the dugout maybe in the nineteen eighties.
Speaker 2 (36:46):
It's the Book of Joe podcast. I can't wait for this, Joe.
Speaker 6 (36:49):
We're going to dive into what goes on in the
dugout and behind the scenes in Major League.
Speaker 1 (36:53):
Baseball, cars, wind whatever else we want to talk about.
Speaker 2 (36:56):
Yeah, well there are no boundaries, right.
Speaker 6 (36:58):
Listen to the Book of Joe podcast on the iHeartRadio app,
on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 1 (37:05):
Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon. We have something really fun and different
off the Thursday night football game coming up in about
ten minutes. But who's ready for a hot take? Can
you get it out? Commanders lose tonight to the Bears,
which is pretty embarrassing, right, No, I mean, look, he Bears,
(37:27):
everybody gets paid for you were over. You've got Ron Rivera.
It's embarrassing. It's embarrassing. It's embarrassing. I mean, you're only
a five and a half or six point favorite. But
you lost to the Bears at home on a Thursday night.
It's embarrassing. You lost my twenty. It's embarrassing. Sam Howell
has played well. The offense looks okay, and Sam Howell
(37:49):
looks like a really good player.
Speaker 6 (37:51):
Right.
Speaker 1 (37:51):
I told you if you're good watching, you feel pretty good?
Right now? Okay, sure, here's your hot take. Yeah. How
long will it be? Because you know all the last
few years what it was like? How long until the
fire Ron rivera hire Eric b enemy starts to take shape?
Is it in ten minutes? Is it in twenty minutes?
(38:12):
Is it tomorrow? Well, I mean is it saturday? We're
always ahead of then, So I mean I already did
that when he that happened? When does now? Because the
offense is playing well, here's the enemy came in. It's
proven that he can still do a pretty good job.
When does that start? Because you know what's going to
they started out to and oh they've lost three games.
They've lost the last two to bad teams. Yea, they
lost a bad footballs.
Speaker 3 (38:34):
As of three days ago, Iberflus took the lead at
odds of plus one point fifteen, so implied probability of
about forty seven percent.
Speaker 1 (38:43):
Stay second.
Speaker 3 (38:45):
McDaniel's third, Mark Davis isn't firing him, said, here's your
head right, get thinking. Mike Vrabel is on that short list,
Mike Tomlin, come on, now, that's never gonna happen. But
then Ron Revere is that twelve to one, followed by
Kevin O'Connell. And then wait, but is that is that
(39:06):
updated with TNF results to you?
Speaker 1 (39:08):
No, no, no, no, I don't. I don't have up
to this. That's gotta be up a little bit higher. Now, Oh,
I have no doubts. They on that fresh updated with
results of Thursday Night Football. I don't have that yet.
I will see if I can get someone to get
me some real live there. I'm gonna say that the
full throated Eric. The enemy starts tomorrow. I'm gonna say
(39:29):
that start tomorrow. It starts to the enemy. Should be
the head coach. Give him a chance. Ron Rivera's had
enough time well and look he shepherded the team through
a really bad era. But we gotta win football games.
The the enemy things. That's what I thought was with
the new era, they just start fresh, get ready, start
with Eric. People getting ready. Twitter out about a fresco
Mike its swollen down the Jason Smith Show with my
(39:50):
best friend Mike Carmen. But since we did it tonight,
we're ahead of the curve. We are ahead of the
curve with Jason Smith and Mike Carmon coming up next.
Something completely different from the n F. This is Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 5 (40:03):
It is
