In Hour 2 of tonight’s edition of the Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon, the guys react to Yankees owner Hal Stenbrenner’s comments about the Yankees making changes for next year. Although Steinbrenner seems optimistic, Jason and Mike aren’t buying Hal’s optimism, and think the Yankees are destined to disappoint next year as well. Plus, Jason discusses why the NBA’s plan to make players limit load management won’t work at all and much more!

Give this you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Greetings and welcome inside our two of The Jason Smith
Show with my bas friend Mike Harmon.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Hello.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Live as always, we are from the ti Iraq dot
Com Studios tirac dot com. I'll hope you get there
an unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free road hazard protection,
and over ten thousand recommended installerstirack dot com. The way
tire buying should be. Well, here we are the Arizona Diamondbacks.
With every inning that.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
Just ticks by, tic tick, tic tic, tic tick.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
They are just a handful of outs away from sweeping
the Dodgers in the NLDS. They are nine outs away.
As they bat in the bottom of the sixth inning,
they lead LA for nothing. It was a home run
party off the Lance lind Is there any other kind
of party with lanceln in a home run party. Four
home runs in the bottom of the third inning, and

(01:20):
that is your lead right now. The Dodgers only two
hits in the game so far. Mookie Bets Freddie Freeman
are both over. Mookie Bets still hitting zero zero zero
in the NLDS, Freddy Freeman a buck twenty five. The
Dodgers just look, there's so many different things you can
talk about with them, and you know, we talked last
hour about what you know. I think their big issue

(01:41):
is translating their game from the regular season to the playoffs.
But this is just, you know, pick your poison. The
guys aren't hitting, pitchers aren't pitching. I mean, this is
what you expect, right, It's not like, hey, no one's hitting.
Your best players got on base once in the series
and you're starting pitchers their eer is over twenty. You're
not going to win many games that way. It's just

(02:02):
it's a complete and total boy, we just all kind
of just went blah at the absolute wrong time against
the Diamondbacks. It's crazy.

Speaker 4 (02:11):
No, it's an absolute abject failure in something. It's sad
to say, but in Los Angeles, I think a lot
of people eldbrace themselves for this given what had happened
through the years. Now the discussion starts up again and
it'll get heated with folks about all right, what is
that COVID World Series mean in the grand scheme now?

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Right?

Speaker 4 (02:35):
In history debates and all of that stuff. And we
look at this and it's making the rounds right now
in terms of the futility, because we can draw the
intersection of the pitching and hitting futility, is that at
this point Mookie Bets and Freddie Freeman's have been well,

(02:55):
they've made more outs than the Dodger starters combined recorded
before leaving their respective games. Yeah, so they are currently
one for eighteen. The Dodger starters combined head fourteen outs.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
That is just absolutely crazy.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
And that's what lancewayn giving you two and jud third
of course.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
Okay, yeah, look, look we have a lot to get
to again, still three innings left to go. The Dodge
will be coming up in the top of the seventh
trailing the Diamondbacks fod to nothing but some big stuff
out of the NFL, and surprise, surprise, we told you
this last night. Hey, there should be really one story
in the NFL that cuts through for the next two
and a half to three weeks, and that is where

(03:38):
is Kirk Cousins going to be playing after the trade deadline?
Where's he gonna go? Right, He's been like I linked
him to the Jets after Week one of the NFL
say hey, they should go get Kirk Cousins. Congratulations to
everybody else. Again, that's why the show is called ahead
of the curve. But look, that's kind of what it's
been Kirk Cousins. Are the Vikings going to be able
to win? No? Now they don't have Justin Jefferson not

(04:00):
going to win. And the story should be where is
Kirk Cousins gonna wind up? Now, before we get into
it in death, let's have Kirk Cousins talk today. Maybe dwait,
he was asked about Yes, he was asked about waving
is no trade clause to go someplace else because you
know one and four and no Justin Jefferson. And here's
what Captain Kirk had to say, Kirk, is there any
scenario where you would wave your no trade class before

(04:22):
the trade deadline? Yeah?

Speaker 5 (04:23):
I'm just very focused on the Bears thing going one
to oh this week and anything else is just not
worth my time or energy or attention.

Speaker 4 (04:32):
Good Man, that's a great answer, because of course that's
what he should be got to go this week.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
Yeah, exactly. Hey, you know what what do I say?

Speaker 3 (04:39):
Every day?

Speaker 6 (04:39):
Man?

Speaker 3 (04:40):
Go one and oh?

Speaker 1 (04:41):
But he finishes and says, I'm just worried about the
Bears this weeks. But ask me again in a couple
of weeks if we're one and six. Let's put a
pin in that for just a minute. He could have
also said no, I would never wave my no trade class.
I would never do that because anytime the vit he's
gonna trade them, they're gonna ask him, would you like

(05:02):
to go to this team, and he would say yes,
So he wouldn't really have to sure, I'll do that,
don't have to wait by note trade Well, you trade
me any any trade that's made, he's gonna have to
sign off.

Speaker 5 (05:11):
Well.

Speaker 4 (05:11):
But that's the thing we brought up last night, right
ahead of the Curve Part two on this particular story,
is you know, there was just a lot of they
should be listening to every offer. It's like, that's great,
but you've got to convince him first before you even
take phone calls. Because You've got to convince him that
it's worth it for him his family to move.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
For eight eight nine games.

Speaker 4 (05:37):
Plus if you get what you would desire Smith a
postseason run. But you know, we saw, if anything, out
of Quarterback, the thing everybody loved about Kirk Cousin was
Kirk Cousin's family. Man, I don't know that he's a
guy that wants to disrupt that unless there's some some
giant pot of gold there for him.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Look, I just want to say this, because this is
the most important thing to say. Kirk All is forgiven.
I forgive you for using the Jets to get to
the Vikings when you wanted to get paid five years ago.
I forgive you. Jason.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
We did that in the moment.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
I know why.

Speaker 4 (06:14):
You know why, or at least you said you did,
because you know what, you went back to the old
rule of the show. You never fought a good strategy.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
No no, no, no, no.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
Hey.

Speaker 4 (06:24):
Look, even if it pained you, even if it wounds you,
even if it's like kill Bill and you take us,
you know, Katani to the gut.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
Even the fact that he said when the offer came
in from the Jets, when it was the Jets of
the Vikings said, Okay, we got the offer we want
from the Jets. Now what do the Vikings have to say?
I forgive you that you used the Jets's leverage. You
didn't know what you were doing. You thought you're gonna
go to Minnesota, and when it didn't happen, now here's
New York. We're absolutely loaded. You're having a great season.

(06:54):
All is forgiven. I understand that you didn't really know
what you were doing, and you really miscalculated going to
Minnesota and thinking you were gonna go to the super Bowl.
When I all is free. Come to New York now,
so I promise you. And this is not one of
those like Mafia movie things where I say all's forgiven
and suddenly, hey, you're peschy going to get made. No, no, no, no, no,
this is not. This is a complete took. All is forgiven.

(07:17):
Come to New York. Everything will be fine. You'll love
Robert sala He stays very uninvolved in the offense. And
you won't even have to eat. Won't you have to
meet him. He'll just be the guy you wave to
on the sideline. He's worried about the defense. It's all good, right,
Aaron Rodgers will call you or he could not call you.
It doesn't matter. You can have a relationship you cannot.
It makes no doubt. Whatever you want, Kirk, you have

(07:37):
Garrett Wilson, who is the most talented wide receiver in
the NFL and on his way to being one of
the top three wide receivers in the NFL. If he's
not there already. You have a great You have a
guy in Breese Hall who by the end of the year,
we're gonna be debating who's the best running back in
the NFL. Christian McCaffrey or Breeze Hall. You have everything
you need. You're gonna love New York. New York will
love you. Can you can get some real estate in

(07:59):
New York with all kinds of hidden rooms like you
like to have with all can put all your stuff
in at whatever it is. But you can shop at Patagonia,
you can shop at there's a target on every corner
in New York. All is for Or you just want
to live in New Jersey and it's even better. Oh
my goodness, the sun and the grass, it's so terrific.
All is forgiven. Come to New York. Everything is great,

(08:21):
and we'll welcome you with open arms. You'll get the
key to the city, you'll ring the bell at the
stock Exchange, all before you even play one game. I
get it. You chose, you chose poorly. So now come
back and make that decision again so you don't have
to worry about the road not taken. Boy, I could
have gone Jets, I could have gone Vikings. I went fighting.
Now now you get a both day. Say oh, I
can do Vikings and I can get back on the

(08:42):
road to the Jets, and you have both that. Not
many people get to have the road not taken in
their career. You can have both of those things. Kirk Cousins.

Speaker 4 (08:49):
The preceding infomercial for New York and New Jersey tourism
and Jets fandom brought to you by Jason Smith. These
are not the feelings or expressions of Fox Sports Radio
or iHeartMedia or his co host Mike Harmy. Look when
when you get down to it, Jason, one of the
big philosophical things here, obviously Quezia Dolfha Mensa and the

(09:13):
brain trust there with the Vikings, with Justin Jefferson being
out and being off to the miserable start, they they've
had and with no defensive help coming anytime soon. You're
sitting there going all right, how long is Jefferson gonna
be out? How many of these games.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
Are we gonna lose?

Speaker 4 (09:29):
You look at you got the Bears this week, then
you've got the forty nine ers, then you got the Packers,
so you got you got a bunch of games that
are losable. You know, normally people want to count winnable games. Nah,
we're focusing on the negative here for the purposes of
the conversation that the thing truly is off the rails
to where maybe you're putting a little bit of a

(09:51):
lean on Kirk, because what does it do. It'd behooves
you not only to get a draft whatever draft compensation
you have, because Kirk's contracts expire, so you would get
something for him instead of watching him walk away, but
also you know, you start resetting and your own draft
pick with whatever quarterback you're trotting out there. Remember we
talked about Colt McCoy having been in the building yesterday,

(10:14):
that you lose enough games to now you're fighting for
one of those top quarterbacks in the draft, or can
take the Jets picks that you get plus your own
picks and maybe trade all the way up to whichever
of those guys you really would like to pair with
Justin Jefferson, which would make him really happy and amenable
designing a long term deal with you, maybe shaving a

(10:35):
little of the money off so that you can add
other weapons so that they can then win. See, it's
all part of a master plan if you're there in
the Vikings front office. But for Kirk Cousins, it's the
all right, if I come here and you really want
Aaron Rodgers back, you're not re signing me. Does this
help my long term prospects in terms of.

Speaker 1 (10:58):
Can you win? You're not? Okay, you're not winning in
Minnesota this year, but you could win in New York.
You're having a great year, having the best season of
any quarterback in the NFL right now.

Speaker 3 (11:09):
But it is the second job on What what does
that mean?

Speaker 1 (11:12):
Like?

Speaker 3 (11:12):
What is winning?

Speaker 4 (11:13):
Is it just getting to the playoffs or do you
really believe that you have a contending squad?

Speaker 1 (11:18):
It's two months, it's you's gotta go someplace. It's loaded.
The Jets are loaded on defense, they have great offensive
offensive line.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
Is gonna get him killed?

Speaker 4 (11:25):
She may not get to his next contract playing behind
that offensive line, bring that Swiss cheese. They're not as
bad as the Giants, but they're not much. They're both
bringing in the same guys to work out.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
They're so bad.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
They're gonna have five people out there blocking for him
and maybe six we leave it tight.

Speaker 4 (11:44):
Is this like where we use of how big a
goalie can we get to take up the space that
what you're.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
Doing here, hey, is could we do it if we
signed five sumo wrestlers and put them across the offensive line?
Could that work? Like? Could five sumo wrestlers across the
offensive line in the NFL? I don't know about that, man.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
The fomworks pretty good, right, right?

Speaker 4 (12:06):
But first stepward that great first step back to ye
to defend.

Speaker 1 (12:11):
To try to run around them. You can't run around them.
They're huge, and just think how much they would pile
drive you if you're trying to get in on the run.
Oh my god, Breece Hall would never get touched. He
would be in the secondary before he gets a club
on him.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
Yeah, but do they have enough of the lateral movement? Right?

Speaker 4 (12:27):
We know forward backward, right, there's a lot of mass
moving forward, But what's the lateral movement look like to
open up halls, you know, space for Hall to run through.

Speaker 1 (12:36):
Nah, you don't need that, you just you just your
quarterback's gonna sit in an easy chair going, Okay, I'm
gonna throw it from here this time right day. Okay,
here we go like this.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
I like your theory. It's a great theory.

Speaker 4 (12:47):
You know what you're not You're not working that out
here in the next eight weeks. He's gotta go work
behind that line. So as much as you can sell
me about how great Garrett Wilson is, and maybe he
buys them a nice chain, because we know we have
see him on planes with the blaying before that. You
know he could get on board that bandwagon for sure
and handing the ball off, flipping it into debris. Hall.

(13:10):
That's all exciting. Your defense most of the time does
the job. That offensive line would make me take pause
as to what my heights could possibly be.

Speaker 1 (13:21):
See, you're saying everything now and I'm looking as I'm
looking for sumo wrestlers. I'm like, I'm starting to scout, going.

Speaker 4 (13:26):
Well, this is you know what call our guy Vicked
the brick Jacobs. He might have a couple of guys
he can bring in.

Speaker 1 (13:31):
This guy six hundred pounds. Good luck you two hundred
and seventy pound defensive end.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
Good luck, I bring in the man.

Speaker 4 (13:39):
Former WWE legend Yoko Zuna is stabbing sign.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
Good luck. Well, we don't need the tush push would
need the we don't know. We're just gonna have a
We're just gonna run behind the sumo wrestlers. And they
would even get around him. They would be like trying like, hey, hey,
can I just can I know they're just stepping downfield
up just and Kirk Cousins is walking behind them down
the field. Go wow, this is easy. They got They
form a big circle around him, No one gets in
to tackle him, and he just walks into the INSI.

Speaker 3 (14:05):
We've now taken you into a really bad space.

Speaker 1 (14:08):
Well, because I gotta get you.

Speaker 3 (14:09):
I gotta find something. I gotta get you.

Speaker 1 (14:14):
I gotta get you away from your Well there's no
offensive line, yes I know that, but don't worry about it.
We'll fix it. We'll find Hey, it can't be that bad.
If Breese Hall is running for one hundred and seventy
five yards now, it can't be that.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
Just means he's not running into them, doesn't mean they're
doing their job. Although I think they can run, block,
I don't think they can pass.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
I don't know that there's any other team right now
besides this st and and the teams have to reveal
themselves in the.

Speaker 3 (14:37):
Next or three weeks, right, I mean it's Halloween.

Speaker 1 (14:41):
There's no other team right now that can reveal itself.
And I could say, oh, they'd be a team watch
out to to come get him instead of the Jets
than the Steelers. And the Steelers seem like we're gonna
go like they they're just as stubborn with Kenny Pickett
as the Jets are with Zach Wilson. Oh no, no,
he works. Yeah, right, yes, Pickett.

Speaker 4 (15:00):
Kind of admit to changing up the uh, the route anything.

Speaker 3 (15:05):
How great was that? No, no, no, but just say
off coordinator.

Speaker 4 (15:08):
Well but but that was the speculation there, right, was
that he made a change off of what Canada had
Canada had called in and sure enough, you know he
didn't sidestep and he confirmed it.

Speaker 3 (15:20):
Yeah, that was all me. Like that guy.

Speaker 1 (15:23):
He still stinks And in a few if the if
the Steelers are good, that's the only team right now
that I could say, Yeah, they're in the right mode
where they can say we need a guy for the
next few few months, couple of months. Maybe it's great
and we resign him, or if we let him go,
we're still looking for a new quarterback in the offseason.

Speaker 4 (15:41):
Well, I would say this with many Steelers. Two things
that that are positives. Deontay Johnson is going to come
back from injury. How great he is I don't know.

Speaker 6 (15:50):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (15:50):
But they've also finally realized what I've been barking up
on the I watch a Flex podcast and with you
whenever we talk Steelers. Jalen Warren is a better or
more explosive is yes see, and he has been for
a long time.

Speaker 1 (16:03):
Do you see Le'Veon Bell said the other day, says
he just needs to lose weight. Like Najie, he's just
too heavy. He can't hit the holes. And it was
a big thing for Le'Veon Bell when he said, look,
I had a pretty good year my first at rookie.
I ran for eight hundred and eighty yards, but I
knew I was too heavy, and then I took the
weight off and took off like thirty pounds.

Speaker 4 (16:20):
Well, remember Harris got her running back and put weight on. Yeah,
and then he was ineffect him when he came back
last year.

Speaker 1 (16:26):
He thinks that's what it is for Naji Harris. Whatever
it is, it's a thing. It's an absolute thing. And
Jalen Warren has been the better running back so far
for the Steelers. But look, let's not get too far
from from the big topic. And that's Kirk Cousins to
the Jets. All is forgiven. It can work, can work, Kirk,
give me a call, Babe, come back exit. How about

(16:46):
a front lost byby hotline? Please hold exit? How about
a Fresco exit swollen down The Jason Smith Show with
my best friend Mike Harmon tonight, Joe, brought to you
by Progressive Insurance. Progressive makes bundling easy and affordable. Get

ATV and more all your protection and one plays Bundle
and Save at Progressive dot Com. Well don't now, but

(17:08):
maybe the Dodgers ain't dead yet. Top of the seventh,
two on two out, back to back RBI singles, pitching
change for the Diamondbacks. Randy Johnson coming in now to
try to close this thing out. This is the this
is it Rubber hits the road right now, Dodgers down two,
two on two out. We'll have more on this game

(17:28):
coming up next, as well as speaking of big MLB stories,
one team says big changes are coming next year, but
are they really coming? And I have four words for
the NBA who want to tell everybody, Hey, the eighty
two game season. We want players to think about playing
all eighty two games. I have four words for you
on that. We got that more coming up next right here,

(17:50):
Jason and Mike. This is Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 7 (17:54):
Hey, I'm Doug Gottlieb. The podcast is called All Ball.
We usually talk all basketball all the time, but it's
more about the stories about what made these people love
their sport and all the interesting interactions along the way.
We talked to coaches, we talked to players, We tell
you stories.

Speaker 1 (18:11):
You download it, you listen to it.

Speaker 7 (18:14):
I think you like it. Listen to All Ball with
Doug Gottlieb on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever
you get your podcast.

Speaker 2 (18:23):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.

Speaker 1 (18:30):
Fox Sports Radio. The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon. Well, the Diamondbacks put out the fire
in the top of the seventh, but the Dodgers do
get two Diamondbacks up four to two. Now as they
bat in the bottom of the seventh inning, Dodgers had
two on, two out, but that was it. A couple
of big singles driving in the first two runs of

(18:50):
the game. So now at least we have a game
a little bit here and Bruce dark Radol's got to
keep the Diamondbacks off the board. Dodgers will have two
more chances to try to keep the series going. And
if they don't, oh boy, is that gonna be something
to talk about it.

Speaker 4 (19:04):
Yeah, as the late Ed Farmer always used to say
in White Sox games, you gotta keep it within.

Speaker 3 (19:09):
A slam, yeah.

Speaker 4 (19:10):
Or I mean if lance Lynn's on the mountain within
four solo home runs.

Speaker 1 (19:14):
Yeah, yeah, that would be Yeah. Maybe even if you
cut it up, it could be eight half home runs
for lance Lynn.

Speaker 3 (19:18):
Get him on, get him over, and get him in.

Speaker 1 (19:20):
Now we got a big story out of the NBA
coming your way. I have four words for the NBA,
who wants to really make sure players take the eighty
two game season to heart that this is the full season.
It's not taking games off. I got four words for
the NBA.

Speaker 3 (19:35):
They have to take an oath now, but I promise I.

Speaker 1 (19:42):
State your name. But when I saw this headline today,
I said, up, they're listening to me. Then I heard
it and I saw what was said, and I said, oh,
this is just ridiculous. So Yankee owner hal Steinbrenner had
a meeting today or appeared at a function, and he
was asked about the Yankees and look their failure this year.

(20:04):
There were eighty two and eighty their worst record in
a long time. And the headline said, Yankees to make
some changes after twenty three struggles. Yankees, I change. Wait,
wait a minute, what what what? He was doing a
Yankees panel discussion with team president of Randy Levine at
Sportico's invest In Sports Conference, and he was asked about
the changes coming. And I'm thinking, yes, exactly what I said.

(20:26):
New manager, bunch of new players, new GM, new way
to do things. You need bold strokes, right, bold, you
need change. These are the changes you need, man, because
it's not getting better. And instead, these were the changes
that al Steinbrenner was talking about. Take a listen, check
your eagles at.

Speaker 5 (20:42):
The door kind of thing, and they prepared to know
them and a lot of that happened. You know, I
think at times has got a little lacy, but it
was respectful to being players and there wasn't one So
when we left, Funster from health of the team, what
we're doing in the clubhouse culture, what we do in
the weight room, analyts, pro scouting, bio mechanics. Is there

(21:06):
enough communication to put everybody? So it was it was
a break three days. It was a very honest conversation.
Man more to come and then wants to come, but
we're going to be making some changes they decided as
sold the others. But I think we've uncovered.

Speaker 2 (21:21):
Certain things to be ben.

Speaker 1 (21:24):
This is what stein Brenner said a group of fifteen
team officials talked about as they met last week in Tampa. Now,
I know it's a little hard to hear because he
had the mic off and that was kind of the
but the audio that came out of this, but he said, hey,
we got to look in no stone unturned. Okay, Well,
health of the team, what we're doing in the clubhouse.

Speaker 3 (21:41):
Taking one game at a time, clubhouse.

Speaker 1 (21:43):
Culture, what we do in the weight room, what we
do in the weight isn't that a show on Netflix?
What we do in the weight room, what we do
in the weight room, analytics, pro scouting, biomechanics, and is
there enough communication between everybody? I don't know bas knowing
half those words me No, he just got him on
an index card right before. He's talking bio mechanics, biomechanics

(22:04):
as biomechanics. So basically what he's saying is, Hey, we
just need to be better. This is al s Timebritter,
we just need Oh, I'm putting everybody unnoticed. The rest
of the mister Major League Baseball season, they just left going, Oh,
it's gonna the same old Yankees next year. They're gonna
try to trot out GM Carlos Stanton for a whole
year and he's gonna be hurt. And Dja May, who

(22:24):
they gave a bad contract to, is just gonna be worse.
They're not gonna go out and sign anybody, and all
they really have is Garrett Cole and they'll be lucky
if they're five hundred. It's gonna be the same manager
and the same GM that's scared to make a move.
Rest of Major League Baseball saw this and said, oh, so,
so the big meeting was. We talked and we left nosed.
We we talked about how we needed to be better.
I mean, really, that's what you said, We need to

(22:45):
be better. You again, you need bold strokes, You need
to convince more funck.

Speaker 3 (22:49):
What did I tell you.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
Need bold strokes?

Speaker 3 (22:51):
I told you this is where we were going.

Speaker 4 (22:54):
I really thought Aaron Boone would get fired, but I
figured Cashman would have one more in life and that
they'd look around and be already would tinker here and there,
and they'll decide, well, we can't really get proper value
for this guy. That guy, the other guy, uh talking
to people about Stanton fails because he can't stay healthy,

(23:14):
on on and on. Here was what the AP put
out is their headline related to this story, because I
wanted to see how it was characterized across media. So
yet MLB dot com Steinbrenner Yanks will be quote making
some changes in off season. Okay, AP News quote how
Steinbrenner says Yankees may make personnel changes, but he's not

(23:37):
sure yet. That's the headline that they put out. But
he's not sure yet.

Speaker 1 (23:44):
I'm not sure yet. We're gonna have big changes. What
are they? I don't really know. Wait what Yeah, No,
I don't really know. I don't know. I haven't really
thought about it yet. Yeah, I'm only the owner of.

Speaker 3 (23:54):
The We got a couple of months.

Speaker 1 (23:56):
Yeah, well, the weight room. I know. One thing is
that we had somebody nearly drop weight on their big toe.
So we have to move a couple of machines we're
getting so that it's gonna be all Nautilus machines.

Speaker 3 (24:10):
Fall is the weight of the pin.

Speaker 1 (24:14):
We're gonna be safe for that's for sure. And I
mean I see this and I just laugh and I go,
he really, he really looked. It's beyond just not getting it,
because what when I hear this from hal Steinbrenner and
I go, Wow, this guy he's kind of out of
touch with what needs to be done. But the guy
didn't come up as a bed you know. Look, he

(24:36):
was George Steinbrenner's son, and him and Hank ran the team,
and Hank passed away, and now he's running the team,
and and and the The thing that hal Steinbrenner, what
he doesn't get is that he doesn't understand the culture
of the Yankees if a guy that owns the team,
it's the guy that was around the team as much
as he was when his dad owned it. He doesn't

(24:57):
understand the culture. Everything the Yanks he's due is rooted
in what George Steinbrenner did. And I'm going back to
the mid bleep in seventies, man, because there's kids right
now that are twenty two year old Yankee fans that
know nothing about George Steinberner's the fact that he owned
the team and they're walking on New York and they're
walking out going. You know, Steinbrenner built this team all
these years ago. Dude, you weren't even born. It doesn't matter.

(25:17):
I know seventy seven, seventy eight went out, he got
Reggie Jackson from the Orioles. The Yankees have been built
a certain way, and this is the this is it's
Their success is deep rooted in what George Steinbrenner did,
which was anything to win, anything to win. I will
go get a player if I need to. I don't
care what I have to pay him. I don't care
if I have to pay the guy to sit on

(25:38):
my bench, because I don't want somebody else to get him.
Which is why I traded for jose Canseiko in the
late nineties.

Speaker 4 (25:43):
You hire and fire Billy Martin because you just get
mad at him and then realize, well, it's not really
better the other way.

Speaker 3 (25:50):
Hey Billy, you want to come back?

Speaker 1 (25:52):
Yeah, And everybody was held to a big, ridiculously high standard.
But they were held to high standards because George Steinbrenner
wanted to win money. He didn't care about anything else.
I want to win the World Series at the end
every bleep in year. And that's not the Yankees. They've
lost that identity. They've lost the win it all costs,
win it all times, whatever it takes, every second of

(26:14):
the day to win. And that's from the top down.
It's a general manager and Brian Cashman that's afraid to
make big moves because he's afraid to be criticized if
he trades away a prospect that turns into a great player.
He's not the same guy, Aaron Boone. Can you really
say they're listening to him? He's not around half the time.
He gets thrown out of every other game. So eventually
you need a new voice in the clubhouse. No matter

(26:34):
what kind of manager you have, you can may manager
win a bunch of World series, but after a few years, it's, hey,
we think we need a new voice. You need a
new voice, a different way to do things. The Yankees
need Bowl changes. They don't have any swagger, they don't
have any intimidation. Everyone sees it free agency and played.
Do I want to go play in New York?

Speaker 4 (26:50):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (26:51):
I don't know. Man. It used to be great to
go there because they would win all the time. But
do I want to go there and deal with the
pressure if it's not gonna be like that? The Yankees
have lost their identity and hel Steinbrenner just doesn't understand
the culture that what all Yankees fans and the media
and the players expect is a win. It all costs
whatever it takes to go win a championship, and the
Yankee has not been that for a long time. And

(27:13):
unless that changes, this is what you're gonna get. Big
Bowl changes next year. The weight room, Oh God, make sure, okay,
big JOm We communication, yes, communicator communication, dude. It's an
entirely different new way to do things. You need new ideas,
you need new players, you need a new manager, you
need a new gym, you need new everything. Because This
road is just not gonna suddenly get better just because

(27:35):
the calendar changes to twenty twenty four, and because you
had a meeting with fifteen guys and said, hey, guys,
we gotta do it better. All those guys walked out
of that meeting going, oh, I really thought I was
gonna get fired, but now I'm pretty good. Hey, let's
go play paintball. I mean, that's kind of what.

Speaker 4 (27:48):
It was, the old rule of specificity, right, whenever we
can have a discussion, Not that you want to inundate
people with numbers and a bunch of little data points
all along the way, but they help paint a better picture.

Speaker 3 (28:02):
Right.

Speaker 4 (28:02):
With what the Yankees did today, you came away with
a no confidence that they're actually moving in one direction.
This is again going back to our jets Lineman, and
can they move side to.

Speaker 3 (28:14):
Side, backward forward? Great?

Speaker 4 (28:17):
In this case, we're just trying to figure out directionality
of the New York Yankees, and we've talked about it
a lot during our time here at Fox Sports Radio.
Smith for as long as we've been doing this. You know,
you may not like certain owners, you may not.

Speaker 3 (28:31):
Like their demeanor.

Speaker 4 (28:32):
Right, there's a lot of things you made to test about,
say a Mark Cuban or Jerry Jones or insert your
favorite winning owner here. I mean the Astros. They've done
whatever they needed to, and then they brought in a
guy that the lifetime baseball guy. He's like Winston Wolf
coming in. He's the cleaner. There's no stink on me.

(28:53):
I came in after this is all done, and look
at how much I'm dominating after. But those owners, as
much as you may not like them, they're all about winning.
They may not do it with great regularity, right, And
when you look at the Mavericks, and certainly you look
at Jerry Jones, but the passion is there to actually
want to win as opposed to all right, I know

(29:14):
I'm gonna get my revenue share check. Let's move on, right,
Let's sell some more merch and go with the Yankees
right now, they're also in that difficult spot. I mentioned Stanton,
and then you got Judge two years removed from that
massive performance. And look at what he did on a
per game basis this year. But is he playing more
than one hundred and ten games next year? Can you
get him to one hundred and twenty hundred and thirty?

(29:36):
I mean It's the same question we ask with a
lot of these squads of all right, I got stars
that are at the base, but are they gonna be
healthy and can give me the contributions to where if
I just sprinkle guys in we can move forward.

Speaker 1 (29:50):
It's so deep rooted and it should be an easy thing.
It should be an easy thing to say, Okay, this
is what people expect. And yes, my dad did send
set a very big high level of standards. And no,
you don't win the World Series like he used two
years ago. You know, you don't suddenly get there every
other year. And when that doesn't work.

Speaker 3 (30:09):
That well, look at the cool Genie bus. But it's
got to be some Los Angeles.

Speaker 1 (30:12):
Yeah, but it's got to be something where you're doing
because tell me, the Yankees have done all they can
to win the World Series since Derek Jeter decided to
trade them drink Carlo Stanton, which you thought, boy, they
what a great move. This is gonna be He's giving
him to the Yankees. Since that happened, have they done
all they can to win the World No, they hold
off the deadline, They hold off in the off season,
and this is just another part of it. They need
all these big changes. He's talking about biomechanics in the

(30:34):
weight room. This is why the Yankees fail. That's why
the Yankees fan.

Speaker 4 (30:37):
I don't want my owners talking about bio as soon
as as soon as that word comes out of his mouth,
like he's clearly just been given some talking points.

Speaker 1 (30:50):
Exit out about a Fresca exit swollen dome. The Jason
Smith Show with My best friend Mike Harmon Live the

Be sure to catch live editions of The Jinn Smith's
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven

Speaker 1 (31:08):
Will the Diamondbacks be joining the Astros and the Rangers
in the League Championship Series? We got that coming up next,
as well as four words I have for the NBA.
They're probably not gonna want to hear after their big
thing from today. That's next. This is Fox Jason Smith
Show with my best friend Mike Harmon. Diamondbacks up over

(31:30):
the Dodgers four to two. They have two on two
out bottom of the eighth inning. Are the Dodgers coming
up the ninth of the chance to extend this series
or is it going to be a four run deficit
or more. We'll keep you updated on this. More on
this story coming up in about twelve minutes. But I
just I love this story from the NBA. As you know,
campus starting. We've heard from Lebron and Ad and a

(31:50):
bunch of players this week, and Michael Malone is still
upset with the Lakers getting all the attention they're getting.

Speaker 5 (31:56):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (31:56):
The NBA today put out a statement from their execus.
The VP, Joe Dumars, had a basketball operations Joe Dias said,
you know, he's been very visible in the front office
since retiring as a player, and he wanted to make
sure that everybody knew. The league has communicated to its
players and teams that quote. We are really emphasizing this
is an eighty two game season, and the league has

(32:20):
data indicating player rest doesn't necessarily translate to players being healthier.

Speaker 3 (32:26):
Quote.

Speaker 1 (32:26):
While it does show guys might not be as efficient
on the second night of a back to back in
terms of injury, we realize that's not really holding up.
So in other words, the NBA is okay if you
suck on the second night of a back to back,
just as long as you play so everybody will watch
on television. So this is what the NBA is saying.
I have four words for the NBA as they want

(32:47):
to put this out there to tell the players they
have an eighty two games season, focus at eight two games.
Good luck with that.

Speaker 3 (32:56):
Oh I went lah words.

Speaker 1 (33:00):
I was, I'm thinking like the King in Hamilton, President
John Adams. Good luck like eighty two game season. You
want them to play? Good luck? Like that's players here
that go all right, yeah, right, yeah, we gotta charge.

Speaker 6 (33:16):
It's so good, right because you got a guy who
was identified as one of the badass pistons, right, who's
got to put this statement out quote everybody.

Speaker 4 (33:26):
Obviously everybody's not going to play eighty two games, but
everyone should want to play eighty two games. And that's
the culture that we're trying to re establish right now.
After team make the playoffs, the others get to fight
for number one drafts. Everybody gets guaranteed money.

Speaker 3 (33:49):
No matter what.

Speaker 4 (33:50):
Tell me what part of that equation you want to
change and fight with your players association over.

Speaker 3 (33:57):
Because that's where we're at.

Speaker 4 (33:59):
And tell you're tell of partners and everybody else how
you're gonna change that up to make the regular season
more meaningful to everybody.

Speaker 3 (34:07):
I'm sorry that ship is sailed.

Speaker 1 (34:08):
Man.

Speaker 4 (34:09):
Come on now, I like the statement. I mean, where's
this data suddenly coming from? Cause you know how many
guys actually played eighty two games? Like five, five guys
of consequence? Anyway, come on, man.

Speaker 1 (34:24):
You're really good. Good luck with that suddenly you're right?
And what Lebron James is gonna say? Oh you know, hey,
what I just watched Joe Dumar say that he has
data that says I'm not gonna get hurt offied. So yeah,
you know what, I'm gonna play all the back to backs. Wait, no, yeah,
all of them. I'll play. Just give me back to
back games ever, I'll play in all of them.

Speaker 3 (34:44):
Eighty will play all the data.

Speaker 1 (34:46):
Jokic will play in all of them, all the Celtic stars,
Giannis will play in all of them. Oh yeah, we're
all gonna play it up. We're gonna make sure that
we do everything. We're gonna kill ourselves to make sure
we have an eighty two game mindset.

Speaker 3 (34:59):
Ready, Come on, right.

Speaker 4 (35:01):
This was in the Athletic article and write up of
this last year top fifty scorers in the NBA guess
how many of them played seventy or more of their
team's eighty two?

Speaker 1 (35:15):
Zero, twelve, Oh twelve, Oh boy, well you kind of
lost the I thought zero would have been a better.

Speaker 4 (35:21):
Zero would have been a great answer. Yeah, twelve is
still less than a quarter.

Speaker 3 (35:26):
Those are guys.

Speaker 4 (35:26):
Hey, they you don't get to qualify for awards anymore.
Forget the sixty five. Keep bumping it up, man, this
is unbelievable. I understand the NBA wants to make grandiose
statements about how they're going to better the product, convincing,
trying to convince the players and the players association, because look,

(35:48):
TV revenues when you're talking about Saturday games in primetime.
Remember that month when Lebron took a week off and
then the next week it was the Warriors, and then
the next week they played each other and they all
ticked off.

Speaker 3 (36:01):
Yeah, they're trying to avoid that, clearly, but those.

Speaker 4 (36:04):
Are You know, that was an unfortunate convergence of circumstance.
Now you've got to try to figure out over the
long haul, is that affecting attendance and arenas. I mean,
I don't know, is it.

Speaker 1 (36:16):
I don't know, I don't see any of the NBA
never says they have an attendance problem. Suddenly now there's
a problem.

Speaker 3 (36:21):
Are they mad?

Speaker 4 (36:22):
I mean, because look, anybody that cries that a guy
takes the night off when they come to your town,
I'm sorry. You're cheering for laundry.

Speaker 3 (36:29):
I'm sorry he and.

Speaker 1 (36:30):
All you got to do is be smart and say, okay,
so we have we have back to backs. Here, we're
playing on local TV. The Lakers are playing on local
TV against the Grizzlies or or or against uh uh.
They're playing the Pistons on Wednesday, and then they're playing
the Celtics on Thursday. Hey, why don't you sit your
guys on Wednesday then against when you're playing the Pistons, right,
and don't sit the guys against the Celtics on there.

(36:51):
I mean it's easy to do that, but we can
win the first game. Well what does it matter? I mean,
if if that's what they want, if you want to
continue to rest guys, you got to do a little bit.
I mean understand, you gotta do a little bit, but
I mean that's how you do it. That's an easy change.

Speaker 3 (37:04):
But the little bit of a give and take. This
is just comedy.

Speaker 4 (37:06):
This is this is just I want to go trot
this out as new material at the Chuckle Hut.

Speaker 1 (37:11):
Have an eighty two game mindset, got it? Fifty five
game mindset? Got it? No, no, no no, I said
eighty two, no, fifty five.

Speaker 4 (37:16):
I played those fifty five like they're the most important
eighty two games of my life.

Speaker 1 (37:23):
Oh boy, again, NBA, good luck with that. Coming up next,
are we giving you a Dodgers funeral? This is Fox
Sports Radio.
