Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Greetings and welcome inside The Jason Smith Show with my
bas friend Mike Harmon, live from the tire Rack dot
Com studios. Uh, just really quick, because we'll have more
on this in a few minutes. Yeah, Phillies are up
ten to nothing batting in the bottom of the eighth inning, yep,
and they are taking extra bases, trying to stretch a
(00:52):
double into a triple that didn't work, and they're on
the phone potential looking to review a play. Why not?
All right, now, I got it. I got it. Arizona
didn't walk off the field. Understand they didn't throw the
damn towel. I understand, I understand this. I I get it.
I get it. Jay cave came up to pinch it
had a double decided not enough for me. I'm gonna
(01:14):
try to stretch it into a triple. Yes, nothing lead.
Not only that, Philly's coaches are on the phone and
the dugout after can we review this? Good? Okay? Now
I understand games still going on. You just gave the
Diamondbacks everything they need to pick them up going into
game three. Really, you're taking it if you're taking an
(01:36):
extra basis, bring hey, when you're down to zip, you're
looking for anything. Sure, you are looking for anything, and
now they're gonna get that. Now they're gonna get this.
They're gonna they're gonna show see this play, see this play,
Look at this trying to get in there, trying to
get a triple when they're up ten nothing in the
bottom of the eighth thing. See the coach on the
phone trying to review this. You're looking for anything positive
that's gonna help get you through. Man, we just got
(01:57):
a rass kicked. Man, you're like Bill paxon an alien.
I don't know if you're keeping track. Man, we're getting
rests kicked to your man u and now you need
anything going into game three, congratulations, there it is sure. Congratulations,
still got a hit, still got a pitch. And if
you don't like it, too bleeping bad. I mean, look,
he threw the in behinde and inside the next you know,
(02:19):
the next pitch, the next matter. You don't want he
just kind of staring at him, but don't want to
give him anything. But now all or not, Now we
are not just stepping on your corpse. Now we'll allow
you to get up now like we had you. You
were dead, you were dead, you were Jason Voor, He's
Michael Myers dead. And instead now we're gonna watch you
get up now. Don't want to do that.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Don't want to do that just because Nick Cave decided
he wanted to go for third.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Look, roberts As even the right there like it was
a slip and slide with no water. Yeah, no, he
did stumble right about halfway into third base.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
He stumbled and it was kind of a belly flop.
And and obviously I made the Nick Cave joke. Nick Look,
he wanted he wanted to have his name. He wanted
to driple. Okay, okay, he had a double. It was fine.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Now you're gonna go okay, he really shocked the Jason really. Well, look,
you guys are going into sports, they're getting paid sleep
in beds. Like I go back to Robert Soli yesterday,
Why the hell would he say, we've played the best
quarterbacks the NFL and we've embarrassed them. So that's what
he does. Have to play the Bills again. You gotta
(03:28):
play the Patriots a guy, I mean, I know Mac
Jones stinks, but you still got to play them again.
Why would you It doesn't make any sense. Why would
you fire up a team because you're fired up in
that moment? Jerey, your guy. You would think the Jets
would have learned knowing what they did to the Broncos.
We're gonna win this for Nathaniel Hackett because uh, John
Payton couldn't keep his mouth shut, yapping about how we
(03:48):
did things this year and the Jets trying to win
the Broncos happens, but you don't want to give them
any extra bit. And now you're giving the Diamondbacks. Oh
really tend to nothing take an extra basis making a fight? Hey,
can we review it? Is he out? Can we review it?
Can we review it? Yeah? Not gonna go over. Well
tell you I enjoyed the fact that they picked up
the phone.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
The best thing the angle games, Yeah, because depending on
the angle, Ready stumbles and he.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Goes out to the arm. That's time to over. No,
I don't know the over Okay, I don't.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
I just hate the idea of the oh, you know,
they they're running it up or they're doing this, they're
doing That's like.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Do you still play the game? Running it up? Doesn't matter.
It's the psychological effect you have on the other team
when they're sitting around going on that plane ride back.
Now we're pissed. Yeah, congratulations, get throw the guy out
at Berks and I wouldn't have given up the launching
pan home runs to Turner, to Schwarmer, any of the
other long hairs long haird freak long hair. The sign
(04:47):
said long haired freaky people. So yeah, ten to nothing,
going to the top of the ninth inning. Now, Phillies
and the Diamondbacks love more on this as it transpires. Now,
I mentioned a couple of minutes ago to you, I
have a huge, huge, huge, huge movie recommendation for you. Yeah,
scary movie Halloween came out this year. Just watch it.
(05:08):
It's on Hulu. So if you have you gotta have Hulu.
I think you have Hulu on the other side of
the glass. Yeah, but we only watch good movies though. Yeah,
who has Live Sports? No one will save you, No
one will save you. It's made this year. Caitlin Deaver
is the star. She's from Justified, couple others. She's a
very good woman in peril, actress, very good at it.
(05:29):
Stephen King recommended it. It was like, all right, let
let's see it, and it's fantastic. Fan. All you need
to know about the movie is these two things, right,
Two things. One, it's about Kaylin Deaver who's in her
early twenties fighting aliens in her small town. There are
five words in the movie. There are five words. Ninety
(05:51):
minute movie, five words. And the thing is, you don't
need dialogue for it. They tell the story fantastically. It's like,
it's tense, it's scary, You're on the edge of your seat.
It is a terrific movie. It's different as a guy
whose job it is for four hours, dude, telling your
mouth say things, telling you man. Silence leaves me very unconfous.
(06:12):
It's not silent.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
There's ambian sound, but in general, like my brain doesn't
doesn't process. You hear that, well, yeah, but you hear
like other people having conversations in the background.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
But the dialogue. There are five words spoken in the movie,
and if you're like me that it's an added thing
going what are the five words gonna be? Where are
they gonna be? And I gotta admit, were't all what
I thought? Leave it on the mets, Jason. If this
movie was so good, you wouldn't be twisting our arms
to watch it. Not many times. Let me tell you
twenty two point eight million dollars. It's a different movies.
(06:43):
Not good. You say it was good, and well, I
gotta give you why. That's what you do, reviewers do.
Why do you like this movie? I don't know what's
it about. I don't want to tell you. Then I'll
go see it.
Speaker 4 (06:53):
Now.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
I gotta tell you a little bit about it. It's
a scary movie. This is the thing. She's fighting aliens
in her small town. Five words spoken in the movie.
Five That's how many snaps Aaron Rodgers took in. I'm
gonna kick your I'm gonna kick your ass. I really am. Hey,
welcome back, buddy. Now I'm gonna ruin it for you.
See she says, j E T s Jets, Jets, Jets.
Those are the five words william uh So trust me,
(07:16):
no one will save you. Fantastic movie. This from Pro
Football Talk, Caleb Williams. And and it's weird. The story
gets out today and I'm wondering if this was. Hey,
here's something for you about Caleb Williams, USC quarterback who
is likely going to be the number one overall pick
in the draft, but made hold on to it until
(07:36):
after the Notre Dame game. Okay, now the source? Did
he cite the source? Did who site the source? The
website you mentioned? The aggregator Pro Football Talk, Well, it's
Pro Football Talk and a couple other places picked up
the story. But Pro Football Talk picking it up. Okay, football,
it is just you know, I always want to give credit.
So well, look pro Bible, other places have it to
(07:59):
but now Pro Football Talk has and that makes it something. Okay, Well,
here's a here's a website that people go to for
news and aggreate. And so that's what it is. If
I said to you, it's things that are wrong dot com?
Oh yeah, is that a website? The name of that
is it are Wrong dot Com? And Maybe this was, Hey,
(08:20):
hold on to this until after the Notre Dame game,
because you know he's gonna be on national TV. It'll
be his biggest game of the year. Uh, Caleb Williams
is gonna throw for three fifty and probably four five touchdowns.
Didn't go that way, and maybe it's I can't hold
onto the story anymore. Maybe that's how it transpired, But
it's gotten out that potentially Caleb Williams is going to
(08:41):
ask for an ownership stake from the team that drafts
him in the NFL draft. Now, if you remember, ownership
stakes aren't really smiled upon by NFL owners. They remember
they didn't want Tom Brady to have the ownership steak,
still doesn't. He needs to be approved. It needs to
be a pro by three quarters of the owners to
(09:02):
give someone a player an ownership stake in an NFL team.
Guess who's not voting to do that. Every single NFL
team not gonna There's no chance in hell, not gonna
do it, not gonna do it.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
I have.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
It's great in theory, but no, I feel like I
feel like this story like did Caleb Williams and his
reps watch air and go, oh yeah, that's what we want.
Oh yeah, but instead of a shoe company, we'll demand
ownership from the team that drafts him. Ah, let's do that. Hey,
it works for Michael Jordan and Air. Let's do it here.
(09:33):
Let's say why not. Let's see it. So potentially looking
for an ownership stake in the NFL team that drafts him.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
Now, I know there was a report that Rogers had
tried that in terms of the you know who would
trade for him? And yeah, and the NFL said no
to that too, Yeah, and said no to that. And
it comes down to here's what the CBA is. Here
are the rules of engagement. And it's great in theory
for players. And we always talk about, hey, go fight
for what you can get in any walk of life.
Whatever you do out there for your for your daily
(10:03):
bread out and keeping the roof on your over your head.
We appreciate you being part of our extended family. Go
ask for whatever you can we I mean, we're certainly
in Los Angeles where there's so many places on strikes
or near strikes, I can't even keep them all, you know,
listed anymore, keep track of where they're at in those negotiations.
(10:24):
But yeah, there's no way, no chance in hell the
owners are gonna approve this. Yeah, let's let's give up pieces.
Who brings that kind of equity, right, that earned that
type of equity to say, you know what, I like
you enough to where I'm gonna give you a piece
of my multi billion.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
What I have, but play for however many You're gonna
be with you four years and then you're gonna be
mad at me that I'm not paying you enough money.
You might not be here for a while. I don't know.
And look, and maybe the equity would be enough to
where you don't fight about contracts to the same level.
But what do we always say the Montgomery burns and
trade it all for a little more. Look, it sounds great,
(11:06):
and it maybe this is Caleb Williams or you know,
his his reps, trying to flex his muscle. See, hey,
how far can we get? What can we get? I
want something? He's not just a number one pick, He's
a generational number one pick. And all these other picks
that didn't get more and didn't flex their muscles and
use their leverage, they were stupid. Watch what we do
And this is maybe just the latest way to say
(11:28):
we're gonna try to use our level. And I appreciate
that tact, I absolutely do. I applaud you. Just when
the door gets slammed in your face. Don't be surprised.
I mean, owners aren't gonna say, oh, I'll give you
what I have. I'm gonna give you so you can
come play football for me. Yeah, you gonna do that. No,
and if that becomes a power play, well that's what
I want. And then they're gonna say, Okay, hey, let's
(11:49):
get Drake May on the line.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
We'll take him number the old generational quarterbacks. Let's get
him on the line.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
We'll always always fails me because we seem to have
that term applied to one or more players every year.
He's a generational talent. To look at that last, he
is the best quarterback prospect since Trevor Lawrence, who was
the best since Andrew Luck. So you're talking to, right,
but a great player. You're still talking about a great
(12:17):
player and.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
Certainly not diminishing him. And you know he had a
bad game against Notre Dame, so yeah, that's there. Uh,
and it becomes part of his data set.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
It turns out not the time. You also want that
story to get out after my worst game, I throw
three picks in the first half and we go, yeo, Okay,
maybe my thing for ownership isn't that may Maybe it
shouldn't come out now.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
Yeah, I mean the curse research says, you know, this
was bandied about, you know, going back as early as July,
but it becomes a bigger talking point now as we
we get deeper into the college season, and certainly for
NFL teams. Uh, you know, everybody wants to do their
top five teams.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
I don't care about that power rank at the top.
All you want the more interesting stuff is in the
suck where there's teams that are vying for the final
spots in your one through thirty two rankings. Because for
the draft that becomes a much bigger deal. And I'm
not just saying that as a Chicago kid watching the
Bears flail about, but for other teams, you know, when
(13:16):
we're talking about the quarterbacks and the hierarchy, we what
five to seven is where we're at in terms of
guys that might have their their name called in the
first round. If you're gonna be a pain in the
ass and there's a lot surrounding you, sorry onto the
next guy, especially because you're always if you're one of
those teams and you think about it Arizona, whether they
(13:39):
love Kyler Murray or not, and they move on from
him or and decide he's not their guy going forward.
Do you trust that organization? You got a potential class
action lawsuit started against did Well for the work environment.
You got the Bears mom and pop shop.
Speaker 1 (13:55):
No, that can't happen. Aaron Rodgers owns the Bears. He's
not gonna give And he did that to Caleb Williams nicely.
Didn't he bequeath it to Jordan Love?
Speaker 3 (14:04):
Isn't that when he joked about But just that idea
of hey, let's give a piece to this guy, Like, No,
that's just not not the way it's gonna work. And
it's great in theory, but you're never getting the vote.
You don't have the vote.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Nah hah. Yeah, it says it's great, and maybe they'll
try to move something else. All right, we're gonna try
this ownership thing and see see what's out there. Plowed
out that test balloon. You're never gonna happen.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Well, and then you go to Plan dath be sure
to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with
Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
Well, last night we watched the Rangers take a two
to nothing lead over the Astros, and they're heading to
the World Series tonight, Phillies and Diamondbacks. Diamondbacks are going
to claw back in it here and say, hey, wait
a minute, we're the little engine that could. The Diamondbacks
coming to bat in the top of the ninth inning
with one last chance to win this game. And here's
(14:58):
how it ended, the Diamondbacks falling just short of tying
this series at one apiece home run. Yeah, I mean
Tebow playing for the Diamondbacks. I mean really, crowd love
TBO so much. Listen to the way. Here's how old
(15:21):
that tebow thing is? Is that that was made by
Lauren Gardner, who was our technical director before Alex tyshert
Ty has been in the show for what like a
year and a half now, I think it's just under
a year. Okay, yeah, I mean it was second. It
predates you. He's a technical director. No, he's not get promoted.
I'm not giving him a title technical director. You're a producer.
(15:43):
He's a telegal director. Okay, wait that technically he's a
technical director. You don't want that title for him. So
are you trying to say that Lauren Gardner made that clip? Yeah, lord,
that's how that's how old that clip is made that clip. No,
Lauren Gardner made I remember making that clip. No, he
Laurie Gardner made that clip. He did not, he did he?
(16:04):
Now he was off doing political commentary before that. All right,
he was vaping and he was doing political commentary. Let's
not get away from the important story, and that is
Frostburg does not want Sure to have a promotion of
any kind. That sucks. There's no extra money. It's not
like he gets any money justin it's technical director is
(16:25):
a title. No, now you have to give him money. No,
I don't. No, I don't. Yeah, no, not at all.
Don't need to do it at all. Nope, they don't
take a sandwich. Hey, hey, I've worked at places that
promoted people without giving him extra money before, and and
their attitude was, if you don't want the gig, somebody
else will do it. How many promotions did you get
for stuffing those watermelons?
Speaker 2 (16:47):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (16:48):
Well, let's see, they get promotion every year, they increased
your your salary by like you get your costs of women. No, no, no, no, no,
take these mets. When I was working part time, this
is when you sing about when I worked in those
supermarket No, every year you would get like anywhere between
twenty five and seventy five cents more an hour or
(17:08):
something like that. You get that every year range. Yeah,
so you start you know, look, when I was in
this is you're talking about me in the in the eighties.
I mean percentage wise, when I was when I was
making like you know, I think like six something an
hour was what it was for working. And you know,
you go from six twenty five to seven, it's like, oh,
because you work thirty hours a week, you're talking about
Oh hey that's money man, Hey all right, that's cool.
(17:29):
It's an extra couple of sandwich. Yeah, you get. And
depending on your review was how much money you got.
Sometimes it was like oh, hey, you know you're you're
getting just an edge. Yeah, but they could take the review.
I mean you they didn't say anything all about your
performance all year, and then all of a sudden, you're
a bad guy on review days. Yeah, Oh let me
tell you this. You want to it's got to me
at my exit interview at a certain yodling company back
(17:52):
and would you say, he ask me how how I
how I blew my raige okay from Blockbuster? I blew
my rays from Blockbuster. Yeah, so this was all. Blockbuster
was a horrible company to work for. So I was there.
I was working at Blockbuster as a clerk when Blockbuster
(18:14):
was still This is in the nineties, before I started
my career at sports, right, So Jason, yeah, you don't
want to shut them down, and careful what that talk.
One store left, one store left. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
They're fighting back now that Netflix wants to do brick
and mortar.
Speaker 1 (18:26):
So I think it was after I graduated Syracuse and
I was looking waiting for to get my net my
first job. So this was open and I had to
work do something, right, So I'm like, okay. So it
was like I think I started at like four to
seventy five an hour something like that was insanely low,
Like that's what it was. And after the first six
months they said, okay, you know, we'd do a six
(18:48):
month review for everybody, and we're going to do it
for everybody at the same time. Every year. So no
matter how long you've been here, you get to be
on here. Oh okay, great, So they go through, they
go all right, now here's a raise and and and
the thing is is that by the time we do
your review, it's gonna be retroactive. So if you if
if we schedule you for your reviews over the course
(19:09):
of like three weeks, don't worry. It will be retroactive
to the first to the to the to the time,
like say July first, right to say we don't do
your review with you until like the end of July.
It'll be retroact. Like, oh, I'm gonna get that money.
So I go in and I meet with with UH,
with my manager, and he's kind of a little nervous
while he's talking to me on going why, I mean,
I've been a pretty good employee and I was done.
(19:30):
Was he the produced director? No, no, no, this is
when I was working at Blockbuster director. There was the
manager and the first man.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
He was that he was the director of the uh
the employee's choice.
Speaker 1 (19:46):
Walk in the supermarket. You were you were the manager
or you were the first man or the first woman
that's they called you. You're the first man. Yeah, that's
that's person. Second ago, you're the first man those people
show up to work on Air Force one get on
my plane. So I go in and I'm interviewing with
the with the with the boss and apparently go and
I didn't know this, but they hadn't gone well for
(20:06):
a lot of people. And I'm sitting there going, Okay, well,
whatever it is, it's gonna be money, it's gonna be there.
And he comes in say, okay, well we've done this.
He goes, but, uh, you know, you haven't been here
that long anywhere. There were a couple of times and
like it was just a couple of things where I
was like fooling around at work, where I was on
the phone when I shouldn't have been, or something like that,
because you know that's me. And uh, I'm like, okay,
(20:27):
well that's not that big a deal. No one really
made a big deal. I mean, he goes, so, here's
your raise, and he and he and he shows it
to me, and my raise was a dime. Okay. So
I went from four to seventy five to four eighty five.
We're all thinking we're gonna get like fifty cents or
a dollar or something, and it was a dime, and
I'm like, oh my god, you gotta be kidding me.
So I come out and I see my friend that
(20:48):
I were. He goes, how did it go? I go
it was blank and awful. Man. You know what they
gave me. They gave me a bleeping dime. Can you
believe that they gave me a dime? He's like, oh my,
you're you're kidding and I said, no, he's Mine's not
going to go good man, Mine is mine is coming
up tomorrow, right, So he goes in tomorrow. He goes
to the next day and he comes out and he goes,
(21:10):
they wanted to give me a dime too. I said, oh,
sorry about that. He goes. He goes, yeah, he goes,
but I told him. I told him to stick it,
and I said, I'm not what you want to tell.
You know, Jason and I are supposed to take getting
getting a dime. You really you just sposed take getting
a dime as a race forget you? Could you take
that that diamond? Stick it? And he quit the day
after that. I'm into the manager. He goes, I can't
(21:32):
give you your raise because you're not allowed to talk
about it with other people. And and Steve came in
and said that you had mentioned what your raise was
to him, so now he can't get right go wait wait,
so now the ten cents an hour you're giving me,
I'm not getting that, like my retro pay. When you
say it's retroactive, it's gonna be like four dollars. I'm
not getting that shit.
Speaker 3 (21:49):
No law about talking about what you mean. And I
lost my generally, you know, bad form and whatever. People
discuss that. I said, blank you I take a course.
Speaker 1 (22:00):
I lost. We got plenty of lawyers up and down
these highways that would take it, because I mean, I
was twenty one and had no money, but that was
I'm not gonna fight the man. Come on, but don't
pay it. Don't pay it. You don't pay them up
to they take it if they think they can get on.
Speaker 2 (22:15):
Come on.
Speaker 1 (22:15):
And those guys have been around forever, you kidd meet.
They might not have had all the uh the billboards
they do now, but they've always been around. Called in
New York, I was in Chicago called called Jacob bar Money,
called Jacob and Ronnie.
Speaker 4 (22:30):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (22:31):
Those guys are always around. And this is back when
Blockbuster was like a really big company. You could have
gotten a lot of cash, hundreds of stores across illegal.
Here you can frown upon it. And here's the thing,
be mad. Yeah, but butank you. Here's how this becomes
relevant today. Is I tell that story. Frostburg doesn't even
want tysher to have a dime, doesn't want the title
is happened anything? We didn't get into a monetary thing.
(22:53):
It now becomes about titles. What what I mean? I'm
still fighting for a change in in my mouth? All right,
all right, justin I mean the font? How about font
is offensive? How about your your super executive producer? And
ty Shirt is technical director extraordinaire. He's tee you are SEP.
(23:14):
My mug says world's best super Okay, world's best producer.
So so you're a w DP and ty Shirt is
a is a C supers just a C super technical director?
Oh no, that wouldn't What does that mean? STD? That
doesn't work? Not STD is better? Actually it's memorable. Yeah,
I know, but still, but I don't I think Tyer
(23:35):
would wear a shirt and said that. I don't want
I don't. I don't think I like that. I don't
want to put that on t Hey, you know Tyser
sees the st D on the show. Wait, really you know? No,
does that what it means?
Speaker 3 (23:44):
I mean it's alongside Stone Temple Pilots, but not quite.
Speaker 1 (23:48):
H uh so A long way to go. And I'm
still mad about all these years later, Right do you
give me ten cents? And then I lost it. I'm
still mad. You try to make Lauren Gardner to the
maker of that clip, I try to make who Lauren Gardner? Okay,
he said his name right long Gonen, though I don't know. Seriously,
I looked at the clip. It's my name on it. Smoke, Yeah,
(24:10):
from MLB Network. Used to work here. I think I
think all the things have your name on it because
you play them. No, it's not how it works. Really,
it's about who saves it. So you made that? I
really think he did. No, he did not make it?
All right, all right, fine, all right, tight shirt's been
here a minute. Look he's still a kid, I mean,
but he's been with us a minute. Jason's brain is stuck.
The last time the Mets were good feeling's twenty four,
(24:33):
but he's really forty six now, I mean, it's been
here a little bit. Well, we've all aged to Garrett.
What can I say, but okay, so this was made
by our editors. Tonight, the Diamondbacks last gasp effort sure
to tie this series at one apiece came down to
this three.
Speaker 5 (24:49):
Two again, strike three called got him looking on the
outside corner. Percurry records the thirteen strikeout of the night.
But Phil's pitching as they shut out the Diamondbacks a
ten and up thing route. The Phillies will head west
with the two games to non lead in the National
League Championship Series.
Speaker 1 (25:08):
Phillies Radio Network on the call, boy really got aggressive
and angry after that guy got thrown out of third,
after Cave got thrown out third, They really rallied hard
and really tried to surmount an improbable comeback. Nothing. So
it was I'm glad this game is over, laid down,
I'm ready to go to bed, all right, See you guys,
(25:29):
see you guys in Arizona. It will be fun. Look,
I've already said I'm coming to grips with the fact
that the Phillies are going to the World Series and
there's nothing I can do about it. You know, I
have a nice Phillies hat that I'm ready to go
bust out. No, don't wear it. Don't wear I wear
that in front of all I do like the I
do like the light blue jersey. It's really because that
goes back. That's like the late seventies.
Speaker 3 (25:50):
I like the early eighties, a little Greg Lezinski action
tug mcgrawl.
Speaker 1 (25:55):
Don't wear No, still don't wear it. Still don't wear it.
I don't know a jersey. It's enough. It's enough that
I have to deal with the fact that I know
what another NLS team is going, and the Phillies, who
the and always the Mets. Phillies are gonna go.
Speaker 3 (26:08):
The Jets Wanstra jumping on top of that, I mean,
we let you watch the Jets win again.
Speaker 1 (26:12):
Oh did I did? I so? I mean if that
doesn't at least you know like work like Nova can wow.
So like wait wait, So I got the Jets win
and the trade off was the Phillies going to win
the World Series. Yeah, you only get one win, tho.
I don't know, man, I need more than that. Oh
you got to watch it, though. I need more than that.
They put on a game for you. That's how much
they love inspect. We'll give you a diet that they
(26:38):
put on the Jets when you already knew the results.
It was fun. It was fun getting to watch the
Jets and NFL Network tonight enjoyed it because it's never
gonna happen the Jets winning or playing the game either
Jets winning. Okay, uh, I need more if I get
to deal with the Phillies week in the World Series,
and I gotta watch Harper and his headband and everybody
with the beards and everybody yelling and look how great
(27:00):
we are. We love each other and we're built for
October and all that crazy. But and I mean, and
Rob mclaney and everybody from It's Always Sunny and Philiddy there,
and I gonna watch all that, and they're at the
game today. Mcleane's gonna wear Philadelphia Union sneakers and he's
gonna have seventy six ers shorts and all that. If
I gonna deal with that, I need more than just
three and three. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (27:19):
But you know what the best part of this game was.
You had two home runs from Babe Schwarmer, who hit
a buck ninety seven in the regular season playoff hero be.
Speaker 1 (27:30):
Built for October, Built for October.
Speaker 3 (27:32):
Forty seven to one oh four and a one ninety
seven average in the regular season.
Speaker 1 (27:36):
That's like Drey Turner didn't do anything. They had billboards,
they were trying to run him out of town. Then
he became a hero and now they love him. And no,
everybody's got long air and everybody's great. We're yelling, we
love each other. No I need more. I need like
the Jets beat the Eagles and Rogers is back after
the bye, like that, that'll make it fair. No, No,
I get that. Then I can deal with the Phillies
(27:57):
winning the World Series. Yeah, sorry, I mean it's gonna
happen anyway. I get it, because the Phillies are gonna waste.
Have to resign yourself because the Rangers will get a
bounce in the World Series. They're playing phenomenal right now.
Then the odds are they're gonna get a little bit
of that in the next round. And the Phillies are
just playing really well and they're beating whoever's in front
of them. The Diamondbacks aren't any good. They got hot
to beat the Dodgers and now they're not hot anymore.
(28:18):
Uh okay, But if I'm gonna get deal with the
Phillies winning the World Series, I gotta have more. I
gotta go back to the marketing table. I can't just
go with that. And I say no, I can't go
back to my people with this. I got a guy
getting something more than that. Well, you didn't get your
dime either. I didn't get that and I lost it. Well,
I had it and then I lost it. I had
that extra dime and that I already have all my
talking points, So let's go.
Speaker 2 (28:39):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (28:46):
Well, the Phillies smacked the Diamondbacks tonight ten nothing. They
take Game two of the NLCS, and a security guard
really smacked a fan running on the field during this game.
Joining us, I'm the hotline the fan who was caught
running on the field smacked down by security. He is
(29:08):
MLB Network insider Extraordinair, John Paul Morosi. You can follow
him on Twitter. Had John Morosi live from the Slammer.
I understand you. You only have a few minutes here, JP,
and thank you for us being your one phone call.
What was it like for you running across the field
and getting hit that hard?
Speaker 4 (29:26):
I guess guys. I was just really curious to see,
with my reporter's acumen, if there is still a jail
at the Philadelphia Sports Stadium for a long time. Of course,
there was the amazing tales of the jail at the Vets,
and I just had to learn from myself if that
was also the case of Citizens Bank Park.
Speaker 1 (29:47):
Did you get a good look at it? Did you
see when it happened?
Speaker 4 (29:50):
So here's how I became aware of it. I entered
the field after the final out to do our interviews
for MLB Network, and I was making my way around
home plate and I heard there, of course, is always
a very loud din about the noise at Citizens Bank Park,
(30:14):
especially right now, and then I heard at this high octave.
Then it went up a higher octave, like whoa, And
that told me that something was happening on the field.
And I turned around and I saw what appeared to
be a form tackle by a member of the Eagles
secondary about one hundred yards away from where I was standing.
(30:35):
And so I was, honestly, in the moment a little
bit afraid that they were maybe going to hustle everybody
off the field, but obviously order was restored quickly thanks
to the Eagles secondary and or the Phillies security crew.
So well done by the Phillies. I mean even their
security detail was on point tonight. You win ten nothing,
(30:55):
your security guards are on their game. It's hard to
find any flaw with Philly right now.
Speaker 1 (31:00):
Well, and that's the thing, I mean, this is done right.
I mean Jason, Jason got all excited, you know, when
Cave was rounding second, I goes, oh, you know, you
just give it a door to open, and then they
went listlessly into the night. Yeah, I mean with JP
when it was ten tohering and Cave is taken trying
to take third and it and then then they're looking
to see if they can review it. I'm saying, okay,
(31:21):
there's a little bulletin board material for the Diamondbacks because
they need a JP. I don't know, I know there's
any way out for them in this series.
Speaker 4 (31:28):
Well, the Phillies, they're on a mission. They're a really
talented team. When you look at and just compare the
two lineups, the Phillies have the deeper lineup. They're playing
better right now, and obviously it's it's the small sample
size of a small sample size, time of year, and
the thing that stands out about the Phillies, and this
may sound very subjective and difficult to prove, but you
(31:52):
can tell they really love talking about the game. They
immerse themselves in the game. They're surrounding themselves with the game.
You've got superstars who approached their craft as if they
were the last man on the roster and a real grinder.
And when you have that kind of an ethic about
your team, it's really hard to beat you. And think
(32:15):
about all the tone setters they've got on this team.
Schwarber played for Team USA, Turner played for Team USA,
Rial Mucha played for Team USA. Harper was going to
play for Team USA had he not been hurt. And
so we're talking about some of the best baseball players
in our country and they're all on one team. It's
like an all star team. And then Bohm has a
big night tonight. Defensively as well, Stott has emerged. I
(32:40):
thought Marsh had some good at bats. And again, things
can run hot and cold in the course of the
playoff series. There's a travel day tomorrow, the Diamondbacks will
be back home, so things can change. But if the
question is are we seeing imminently indications that things are
about to change, I would say, no, we are.
Speaker 5 (33:01):
We are not.
Speaker 4 (33:01):
So it's going to take the Diamondbacks and listen. The
other part about this, at the risk of oversimplifying things,
the Phillies pitching has been lights out, and and Nola
has been unbelievable, and Wheeler was unbelievable in Game one,
and so when when you've got two guys on their game,
it's just really it's really hard when you when you're
(33:23):
starters are that good. It's hard for the Phillies to
look bad, and it's hard for the Dbacks to look good.
And and that can all change if all of a sudden,
Brandon Fott has the night of his life and if
Suarez struggles in Game three, you don't know. And I
think a lot of it's going to be determined on
how how they both come out and how the bullpens
get involved, because I think both Game three and Game
(33:44):
four are going to be much more bullpen influenced games.
And what we saw here in games one and two.
Speaker 3 (33:51):
Yeah, I was going to say, my man has already
had his game of his life against the Dodgers last round,
but I'd like you to do a feature on MLB
Network about the Samson effect and the long hair clotiating
a culture, and really, you know the dominance there because
it looked like it grew for each guy another three
inches on their heads today JP and and I can
(34:14):
only wish to have that same problem.
Speaker 4 (34:16):
So here's the question on the Phillies. Who who's the
head of hair do you find to be the most impressive?
Is it Strom? Is it Bom, is it Marsh? What
do you got?
Speaker 1 (34:27):
I think Marsh is the leader in the CLUBB.
Speaker 3 (34:29):
I like because he was like Chris Stapleton as he
got to second base, we were waiting for him to
rip out a guitar and starts singing to it.
Speaker 1 (34:35):
Yeah, but Strom kind of looks like Brandy Johnson. Yeah,
he gots on the mound. So I kind of like that.
It kind of he looks even more intimidating JP Nennis. True.
Speaker 4 (34:44):
They just they're so deep right now. And I really
mean this. I've been I've been very blessed in my
career and also just being a fan to be in
some pretty remarkable atmospheres and in terms of open air stadiums.
I have not been in many places like this in
my life. It's loud, it is raucous, it is alive.
(35:08):
It has a really huge influence on the way the
game is played. It really is unique. I mean this
is you know, Dave Dombrowski has been in this game
for forty years and he said it's the best home
for the advantage he's ever seen. And Dave does not
just say things for hyperbole purposes like that was a
very honest assessment. And we'll see if the d Backs
(35:29):
fans at Chase can can equal it, because they're gonna
have to bring some energy to get this I think,
to get this series back that they've got to support.
Brandon fought a lot in Game three. They got to
get the bats going. They kind of get going on
the basis too. I think that's the other thing is
we expected to see more activity on the basis than
what the d Backs have done. So a lot of
questions and we'll see how the d Backs answer them
(35:51):
there in Game three.
Speaker 1 (35:52):
All right, JP, heading over to the American League, I'll
ask you the same thing, is the Alcs over are
we going to do? I am I gonna have to
sit here and watch the Phillies play against de gram
in absentia and Max Schers are in the World Series.
Am I gonna have to go through that? Well?
Speaker 4 (36:07):
I think that based on the way the series have gone,
I look at the Astros being the team that has
the better chance to come back, And that may sound
a little strange because it's the Astros have lost two
games at home, but you think about their history. They've
got a lot of guys in that clubhouse who were
(36:27):
part of the team in twenty nineteen and then forced
the seventh game, part of the team in twenty twenty
that was down three to zero to the Rays in
an empty ballpark in San Diego and still came back
and forced the seventh game. So they they can do this,
and I think they've got so much experience and know
how that they've got a shot even on the road.
(36:49):
So the Rangers, they're playing great, But I look at
the Astros with just how well they've played at October
for a very very long time, as being a team
that still has a chance here to make a comeback.
Speaker 3 (37:02):
Something we talked about coming into the series, JP, you know,
the veteran managers because we've been you know, we watched
these mistakes in the NFL and down in distance and
some of these guys are long tenured Summer Green and
then we look at Bochie and we look at Dusty Baker,
It's like, all right, it's not about them.
Speaker 1 (37:19):
It's just all about the players. Like we're not even
really other than the rally cry and what their history is.
I don't think we're micro managing the same way from
the the catbird seat that we have as we do
with some of these others.
Speaker 4 (37:33):
Yeah, I think that's fair. And to be honest, in
these first couple of games here in the NLCS as well,
there haven't really been that many moves that Bury Leavello
has made that would have made a huge difference here.
And I think the same is true with the Astros
and Fron Rivaldez just didn't have a good game, and
at that point, what can Dusty really do about it?
(37:54):
I think that's the other piece of that puzzle. So
I think that you've got guys who understand run a bullpen.
I think Rob Thompson's an excellent manager in Philly Dusty.
And here's the really dramatic part of this is that
we don't know Dusty's managerial future beyond this year, and
(38:16):
he doesn't in my opinion, he does not deserve this
this year to year scrutiny. I mean, the man's done
nothing but make the World Series and make the playoffs
every year, win the World Series a year ago. He
in my mind, has earned the right to have a
longer term contract and less uncertainty surrounding him. But guys,
(38:37):
I don't know. We have to prepare ourselves for if
it doesn't go the Astros way in the next five games.
Are we going to enter an off season in which
there's talk about is this Dusty's last year? So a
lot of conversations, a lot of things at stake right
now for the Astros, and they do love their manager,
and I expect them to play for him in a
(38:58):
big way in Texas now that the series is shifted
to the Rangers beautiful new Ballpark, and.
Speaker 1 (39:04):
They'll be network inside of John Paul Morosi with us
from Philadelphia, Jason Smith, Mike Harmon live from the tyreck
dot Com studios. All right, now, you mentioned off season,
what could be next? Andrew Friedman Dodgers made the big
statement today. Dave Roberts will be back as manager. Clayton
Kershow will be back as long as he wants to
come back. Next year. If I said to you, finish
(39:24):
the sentence next year to get further, the Dodgers need
to blank, what would you tell me? What would you
tell me the Dodgers need to do for next season?
Did you give him three pages to write on?
Speaker 4 (39:36):
Yeah, that's a great question. They really need to address
their pitching. And again, this is where we've talked about
Otani with them for a long time, and I'm sure
we will in our off season conversations too, But he's
not going to fix their rotation in twenty twenty four.
They need more certainty and obviously Walker Bueler coming back
(39:57):
is going to be crucial, and they certainly will hope
to get some impact from Dustin May during the course
of the year, and maybe even Gonsolin as well. But
they need to sign, for me, two starting pitchers, and
I would not include Otani in that, like he would
not satisfy that need because they can't pitch next year.
(40:20):
So that's what they've got to do. They need to
sign two legitimate starting pitchers. One of them could be Kershaw.
I would grant you that because went healthy, he's still
one of the better pitchers in baseball. But they need
some guys that can soak up some innings because the
approach they took this season just didn't work, especially once
(40:43):
Urrias was no longer an option, and the younger guys
just didn't have enough links to them in the playoffs.
So two starting pitchers. Kershaw can be one, but you
need at least one more legit, high end starting pitcher
for me to feel confident and then they're ability to
advance further in the postseason.
Speaker 1 (41:03):
Check them out on Twitter at John Morosi, that is
at John Morosi MLB Network Insider Live from Philadelphia. JPE
will talk tomorrow night, we'll talk Alcs and we'll get
your once again, your fearless Lions prediction. Yeah, because you
have just been red hot with the line. I think
they're in first place because of you, JP.
Speaker 4 (41:23):
I think they are too. And there was even some
thought just talking to the Philadelphia media here, they were saying, hey,
maybe a Lions Eagles playoff game. I said, wow, we
haven't seen that since the days of Scott and Mitchell
and Herman Moore.
Speaker 1 (41:36):
J we were talking before. I mean, Smith's now campaigning
for Jared Goffers MVP. We're getting the merch printed tomorrow
get it going, baby.
Speaker 4 (41:45):
I'm telling you I am all in the lions now,
I really am.
Speaker 1 (41:49):
I'll tell you that that could be your topic on
Stearnssey and the Pope on your morning show tomorrow and.
Speaker 4 (41:57):
See what's going on in the managerial search that the
next one.
Speaker 1 (42:01):
Yes, all right, have that ready for tomorrow. Jay, people
talk to you. Then tell you a buddy, there goes
John Paul Marosie
