Greetings and welcome inside The Jason Smith Show with Mike

way tire buying should be so much to get to
tonight Opening Night, next show in the NBA, the Nicks

(00:53):
and everything else and more scandal and there's a there's
upset boosters that are turning Michigan into every everywhere else.
It's an insane kind of day. I wrote a manifesto
all day. You did the Michigan manifesto. Yes, how to
take all Blake, Damn, I wrote my own. It's a
lot better. But of course we want to start extra
dose is of fun tonight. All our thoughts and prayers

(01:15):
with Maine and Lewiston and the tragedy that's gone on there.
That is a developing story and there's it's just an awful,
awful thing. And are are we are never far from you.
But our business is sports, and we are here to
help take your minds off stuff like that and to
present stuff that is a little bit more, you know,

(01:35):
a little bit better to listen to, whether it's the
next losing or not. Because the Knicks lost to you know,
opening night tonight, the Knicks loss, so your team doesn't
have to But I just want to let you know
that that was, of course is at the forefront of
all our minds here at Fox Sports Radio and beyond
now our business of sports. Obviously opening night, you heard
Brian Finley just play the highlight moments ago. Chris tops

(01:56):
porzingis because of course, Kris tops porzingis Sports thirty first Beard. Yeah,
that's okay, okay, here it is. Yeah, it's okay. The
Celtics can win tonight. The Celtics can win August twenty five,
October twenty fifth, and in two months when Christops Porzinga

(02:18):
suddenly isn't playing and they don't know when he's don't
do that, he don't know. Don't be that guy. Keep
your sour ass on of here.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
We don't I don't have time for that on a
Wednesday night at two minutes in, you're already doing that nonsense.
Oh he's going to be hurt anyway, Just ad your salty.
He got away and he punked you. Just don't you repeatedly?
You know why, because he actually hit anybody. You had
the bulls on the worst team in the NBA hit
the chet home grin though you're.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
Just yeah, yeah, now it's a rivalry, right.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
I thought he broke his ankle, like literally the way
he stumbled on that Onrede Drummond Drive.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
But you and your chet home grin, man, there's gonna
be problems. I mean, that was crazy.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
But I mean you're just mad that Porzingis went nine
to ten from the fall line and took care of
business when it mattered.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Look and and look nothing changes from last night. Look
the Knicks blow a lead, that Celtics scored nine in
a row. Look, the Knicks are up six with four
minutes ago. They come back from behind, and this looks great,
and then suddenly the Celtics can't miss. And of course
the Knicks outside of Jalen Brunson, emnul quickly can't go
to Julius Randall because Julius Randall is horrible tonight five put.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
Him in that playoff you know that tournament thing that
they did with Michael Imperioli. Why's Julius Randall in there?
Why wouldn't you pick a different representative.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
I don't know, man, I don't know. He ain't gonna
be there. No. Five out of twenty two, one out
of five from the free throw line. And he's minus
thirteen for the night, the biggest minus of anybody on
the Knicks. And I'd go listen, what I said last
night still goes Nicks. Get Joel Embiid, the seventy six,
get any three guys off the Knicks roster they want

(04:03):
except for Jalen Brunson, and Julius Randall has to be
one of them. The trade is still there in my car.
It is right. Every day, it'll be I'll call the six,
I'll call I'll call every day, I'll call Daryl Morian say, hey, dude,
I don't think you're a liar. Let's do business together.
Let's make a trade. I think you're doing a great job.
Let's make a deal here, and I would make that trade.
It would be any three guys you want. We have

(04:23):
a very talent roster. Any three guys except for Jalen
Brunson and Julius Randall has to be one of them.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
Patent patent pending, since everything else we do get stolen
and misappropriated next time. Right there, the game show about
trades where you know you've got the long stick microphone,
like you're Bob Barker or Jean Rayner. I was absolutely
because they also wanted to think about Wink Martindale. But

(04:52):
then they gets me lamenting the state of the Giants
defense most weeks, and I don't want to do that
right now.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
Now you're down a rabbit hole. Look where you are,
and then you just go isling down.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
No, here it is. Here's the trade as proposed. You
get a giant video board that has highlights and then
ends with a nice photo of Julius Randall from the
best that you can find from media Day. Because you
get him, and then you get to choose from column
B and it's rotating like you're spinning the wheel. Two prices, right,

(05:21):
I mean we got to have, you know, at least
visuals to get people along.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
And then the third.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
One is what's in the box, okay, So you could
take you know, two, say from column B, or you
can go one and the bonus and the bonus is
in the box, okay.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
And it could just be season tickets. You could see
it could be an autographed dow Fo We got Julian's
Randall and season tickets.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
I mean, it could could be an autographed Alan Houston Jersey.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
I mean, you just don't know.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
But it adds an era, like you know, because they
used to open it and then there'd be a donkey
inside this giant box.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
So you know, we got to have some fun with it. Uh.
That trade is out there and anyone can have it
at any time. Anytime. It's that it'll be there. I
don't think I'll ever pull that. That's like when you
offer someone to trade in fantasy and they say, hey,
set an expiration on it. No, this will always be
there whenever you want to do this trade. I will
do this trade. With you, things really hit rock bottom.

(06:18):
Let's do it. Shot be there for you. Can I
still accept that trade he offered it to me three
months ago. If it's still offered, you can still take
that trade. All right, let's it will be there.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
It'll click the link on it to do the comps
again and what the analysis is, and it starts playing
the Friends theme song. You know, here's because that trade
doesn't go away before before.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
We get to Wemby. I mean, honestly, look, the marquee
game of the night, Celtics beat the Knicks one o eight,
one oh four. Porzingis has thirty Jason Tatum has thirty four.
The new look Celtics have enough to win on the
road at MSG the part of this game because everything
is fine. Listen, Okay, the Knicks lose this game, all right,
I get it. That's fine. They probably should have won.
But the thing that gets me more than anything else

(07:01):
is not Hey Dante DiVincenzo, who they gave a lot
of money to, scored no points and didn't make a
shot tonight. All right, that's not gonna happen. He's gonna
hit his shot, right, there's lots four They're not gonna
shoot thirty seven percent from the floor, always still plus five, buddy, Right,
All of these things are okod Hey, you can affect this.
You can affect the game without scoring. But all of
these things I look at and go, man, ah, I
did you know? Heart? Really? Seven points and twenty two

(07:24):
minutes he's usually been. All of that's fine. I don't
care about the red. All of it's fine, except I said,
it's another night where I have to look at volume
shooter Julius Randall and watch him continue to miss shots
because he can't make shots when he's double teamed, he
can't get his own shot. And we have nights like this,
and I just it's like, how much more of that?
Am I gonna have to watch? How much more they

(07:44):
have to watch? Hey? Yes, Julius Randall is a good player,
but the Knicks treat him like he's a one and
he's not. He's not a one. Brunson's your one, and
that's your problem. Now is your number two? Hey? Is
your number two really Julius Randall? Because the look he
has two any games like this where he doesn't make
enough shots and he demands the basketball, And when you're

(08:05):
a when you're a front court player and you don't
make shots. Dude. Front court players don't miss as many
shots as you do. They don't do this. When you're
a front court player and you're missing, it's how can
you How can we still give you the ball that
many times? How can you shoot the ball twenty two
times again? You can't? Right, So, I mean, I know
it's one game, but I feel like this is just Hey,
like we watched the Nuggets pick up from where they
left off last year with their level of excellence. I'm

(08:27):
watching Juliet's Randall pick up where the level he left
off last year is here. He is take it too
many shots and we wind up losing the game and
we can't give him the ball. We need a shot
because he can't make it. And it's it's the issue.
He's a he's a He's become a progress stopper with
the Knicks. It's like because they gave him all that money,
had the one great year and twenty Hey, they raise
a batter for him, MSG Julius Randall twenty twenty everybody,

(08:48):
And because of that, it's like they've been they've been
stuck for the last three years. And Okay, Randall's got
to be one of our two guys, and it's dude,
Randall's Randall's game is that you can see it's not
It doesn't. It doesn't play into long term success. Yes,
he has big games once in a while, but by
and large, when you have nights like this, there's just
too many of them and you rely on him for
too much. If he was the knicks third best player,

(09:10):
I would say okay, But then again, would he would
he would he be able to do what he does
in the box score elsewhere if he didn't get the
ball twenty times a game? Maybe not. So you see
where the Knicks are stuck, right. They needed they need
another player at the top of their rotation, and it
can't be Julius Randall. So again, that's why my Dwell
and b trade offer will never expire, never expire, and
it will never be accepted. Look as we look at

(09:32):
this process, I keep keep rejecting that trade. The guy
keeps sending it to me every day for damn pets
cemetery movies. I thought I killed you ah back baby,
Uh you know you go back.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
To his final year in Los Angeles and then the
year he had in New Orleans, and you look at
how efficient he was. Now, the scoring wasn't there that
final year for the Lakers, but he got a lot
going on, a lot of people need needing to be fed.
Going back to twenty seventeen twenty eighteen, but he averaged
sixteen points game, but he shot almost fifty six percent

(10:06):
from the field. He was efficient. The next year he
goes to New Orleans and he's efficient fifty two point four.
It's down, but the scoring average goes up. Now you're
getting twenty one four and then ever since then you're
hoping to get to forty five. Forty six percent. Last
year was an achieap bit because he improved almost five
percent over that disastrous twenty twenty one to twenty two season.

(10:31):
Still twenty points a game, and folks can point to that.
I don't care everybody scores twenty points.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
You play enough.

Speaker 3 (10:38):
Minutes, you're finding twenty points in this NBA, particularly if
they're gonna keep calling the damn flop and all this
crap because they're gonna be free throw parades when it's
all said and done, lunacy of Opening Night. I'll tell
you what, But you're stuck. You are absolutely stuck with
a guy who you gotta you've gotta play minutes, and
it seems like Thibodeau just I don't know how he

(11:01):
bites his tongue and is able to just not run
out on the court and closeline him at times with
some of the decisions that are made, and then defensively
just getting worked so and then you're not getting much
help on either end from him. And it can be
some empty stats, and certainly fantasy basketball player is gonna

(11:23):
take some of the points and rebounding totals on a
nightly basis and find some value in daily fantasy. But
it's painful and look, as a team, you guys collectively
just should be shooting free throws. The Suns won and
then did a team workout in the hallways for hours.
The Knicks should be still on the free throw line.
We should be able to go and do a live

(11:44):
look in of them getting yelled at by Thibodeau while
they shoot free throws.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
Exit. How about a fresca and swollen dome. The Jason
Smith Show with Mike Carmon Live the tirec dot Com Studios.
We're in the final stretch to get tickets to horse
racing's biggest moment of the year, world's best head of this,
I need it for the Breeders' Cup World Championships on
November third and fourth, The countdown begins. Now get tickets
today at Breeders Cup dot com. Now elsewhere. Look, big

(12:10):
night in the NBA. Had a lot of games to
get to we'll talk about, but the debut of Victor
wembin Yama so far, so for the Spurs, thirty to
twenty two lead late in the first quarter. Look at
the Spurs scoring thirty points in the first quarter. I mean,
come on, man, Pike, sure up that one up? Good? Yeah,
And so far it has been a big night for
again shooting for san Antonio. Wemby has played five minutes,

(12:34):
three points, two rebounds, and assist at a block. He
is plus seven for the night so far for san Antonio. Again,
you look at where he's at right now. We saw
the over runners Humber like eighteen points and seven or
eight rebounds and all of that two and a half blocks. Baby,
I'm gonna say he's gonna blow past all of those
except for maybe the points. I'm gonna say he gets

(12:55):
the blocks. He's in double digits for rebounds, he gets
five or six assists and he but points, Okay, three points.
He's only he's only shot the ball a couple of times.
It looks like the spurs are spreading the floor. That
what I've gotten to see from the game since we've
come on the air points might not be there for me.
May be one of those nights. Remember his debut was
I want to get everybody involved and not to make
it look like I'm taking every shot, so I'll take

(13:16):
the over in all of the categories. Woman Yama tonight
what was pretty cool.

Speaker 3 (13:20):
To watch, right He got a rebound and then started
to get get the break moving and pass the ball
up the court. First block was on Kyrie. I would
have gone to Kyrie, can you sign my ball? You know,
have you seen my baseball? To go back to there's
something about Mary. But then he took two three point shots.

(13:43):
It doesn't look like he want at least for those
first couple of minutes, and obviously it's a five minute
sample size, but he wasn't hanging around the low post
on the offensive set. He was hanging around the perimeter
for a good chunk of it, uh and taking those
two threes, the second of which fell. But I tell
you there's an electricity man, seeing that pregame stuff and

(14:04):
the uh, you got the firefly looking thing like you're
either at a Taylor Swift show or celebrating the life
and times of Bray Wyatt. I don't know what was
going on, man, but the energy of that, you know,
give you goosebumps as that crowd came to life.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
Exit out about a fresca. Mike Swallen Dome, Jason Smith,
Mike Carmon Live from the Tirack dot Com studios. It
is a big night in the NBA. You could say
it's the real opening night. We had two games last
night and we have basically a full slate of games.
And I'm still waiting for the Blazers and the Clippers.

Speaker 3 (14:34):
You just called coming up the Lakers the undercard, well
to get well, the Knicks play tonight.

Speaker 1 (14:40):
So I mean, come on, man, the knixt play tonight.
That's the Knicks played, all right, and they lost that. Okay,
one game, it's okay, it's okay, and one game closer.
Moving on from Julius Randall, that that's what we're doing.
Is that is that how we're going to play the
next eighty one games? Wow? Eventually we're going to trade
Julie's randall at some point that's going to happen. Uh.

(15:05):
But coming up next, do we have new twist and
turns in the Michigan sign stealing scandal? Uh? Yes, Harn
wasn't kidding when he talked about the Michigan manifesto. That's
coming up next. Right here, Jason and Mike fromthtirect dot
com Studios, This is Fox.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 1 (15:32):
Greetings and welcome in side our two of The Jason
Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon. We're live
the tirach dot com Studios. Tirac dot com will help
you get there an unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free
road hazard protection over ten thousand recommended installers. Tirack dot com.
The way tire buying should be. Well. A big night

(15:52):
in sports, big night in the NBA. We got some
Victor Wembinyama stuff to get to in a couple minutes.
Got a big NFL story suddenly the forty nine ers.
But of course you want to mention here at the
top all our thoughts and prayers and everything that main
needs after the tragedy there tonight. It's just an awful
situation and anything that you can help with this situation

(16:18):
would be wonderful. It is just another mass shooting and
we're still getting the details as they come in now.
But our thoughts here at Fox Sports Radio, of course,
are not far at all on a very top of
mind for everything going on in Maine now. Our business
is sports, of course, and we're to try to take
you away from things like this so you can hear
us knuckleheads talk about stuff like why the Knicks need

(16:41):
to move Julius Randall tomorrow because they do. Because they do.
But that's what we do here, and it is a
big night in the NBA and some fun stuff to
talk about. Let's do the debut of Victor Webbin Yama
here for comanis before you get to brock Perty Right now, halftime,
the Spurs have scored sixty eight points at halftime. I mean,
this is like three and half quarters of a Spurs

(17:01):
game last year, but they lead the Mavericks sixty eight
to sixty four. Luka danticat sixteen, but the debut of
Victor Webbin Yama. He has played twelve minutes and his
line looks like this, six points, three rebounds, and assists,
a steal and a block. He is two out of
four from the field. Both of his makes, though, are threes.

(17:22):
This is Wembin Yama. He has not been as aggressive
as you would normally see him. And look, we saw
this in this situation that presented itself with his debut
in the Summer League, where his first game was, hey man,
I don't want to sit here and you know, show
you all my skills. I want to be a great teammate.
And then the second game was, oh no, I'm gonna
show you I can dominate. You've seen that dominant part

(17:43):
of his game in the preseason, and this is gonna
be one of those where it's a very quick assimilation
to the NBA for Victor wembin Yama. Look, you're already
looking at just adding wembyan here. The Spurs are out
to e lead at halftime, they're scoring a lot of points.
His impact on the team and being able to spread
the floor and do what he does to be you guy,
you always have to account for this is going to

(18:06):
be immediate. You know, if the Spurs aren't in the
running for the playoffs this year, there's something wrong. Not
not elevation, but this is a team that's been out
of the playoffs and eliminated before the last month of
the season basically every year the last few years. This
should be a year adding Webbin Yama. We've seen his
skill set, we see how it translates. This guy is

(18:26):
going to be very quickly being a fantastic player in
the NBA. They should be a playoff team. By that,
I mean you should be finishing somewhere in the top
ten in the Western Conference, whether you're in the because
if you're in the playing round, you're in the playoffs.
Right if you're in, it's a postseason game, you're in,
you're in. They should be there, and if they're not there,
there's something wrong. But the combination of Wemby and Popovich
and figuring things out, he's always been able to figure

(18:48):
out a system that goes around the players he has there.
Uh yeah, I don't doubt that this is how this
team is going to be. So now make room for
another team in the playoff hunt, because, like I said,
if it doesn't happen this year for San Antonio with Wenby.
Something's wrong.

Speaker 3 (19:01):
I mean, you're getting good guard playoff the jump in
effective thus far moving the ball, you're looking at six
or eighteen assists out of your twenty six makes. I'll
take that percentage Popovich getting the ball movement going. If
he's going to be able to step out and hit
the three with regularity, another victory there. And at this

(19:24):
point you bring them along, you know, load management not
a thing like good balance here. You got seven guys
that played at least eleven minutes in the first half,
but twelve minutes we were looking at probably twenty to
twenty five was I think the guestimate for most people
coming into this game. To get him acclimated and really

(19:48):
just let the hype it's going to be.

Speaker 1 (19:50):
There all year.

Speaker 3 (19:51):
But obviously night one just sensations overload. So trying to
see if you can't gut it out and see what
he bro the table and on both ends of the court,
making making his stands not overwhelming. Really, I mean, we
saw that early block of Kyrie or ring, will see
more of him in the paint, I'm sure as we

(20:13):
get ready for the second half, here, but uh yeah,
look it's it's always fun right. We throw the term
around generational way too damn much, particularly in college football.
But here we are with with wem Min Yama. I mean,
after all of this waiting, right, Petty said it waiting.
He's the hardest part man. So we're finally here opening

(20:34):
night and Popovich is happy, and he was cursing out
Steve Kirk because so much quoted Steve Kerr at him.
He's talking about how he had a pep in his
step with this new rookie coming in, and Popovich said
he blank him, which is good.

Speaker 1 (20:46):
It's good. I like that. But it's good. I like
the fact that pop is gonna matter again because it's
been three years of we haven't had a great Greg
Popovich press conference where he's the you know, the NBA's
version of Bill Belichick. We have not had that in
like three years.

Speaker 3 (20:58):
He hasn't matter here. I think he's had him. We
just have him bothered. Well, that's what that's what I mean.
When you're you know, when you're ten games under five hundred,
really doesn't matter. I would see the one I think
the one thing for Wemby, right, what teams might try
to do to him to try to stop him, and
the you know, trying to see you know, watching him
play in the preseason and seeing the way the NBA

(21:18):
is going now, the best way I can see them
trying to stop him, other than when he's down low,
he's just going to have to put a little bit
of weight on because sure, the bigger players are going
to be able to pound him, but he's gonna be
able to get around them because he's got he's got
a skill set.

Speaker 1 (21:32):
That's that's that's gonna work. The only thing that I
can see giving him trouble is if if you hit
him with a big guard up top when he's when
he's in his most dangerous which is the ball right
around the three point line where he can either take
a shot or take it to the who if you
can get him with a big ish guard, I mean
not not as you know, someone who's you know, six
five sixty six that can you know, is big enough

(21:53):
to get in his way and have ball skills, that's
going to make it difficult for him to try to
figure out a way. Okay, well you're hitting me with
this or this player. Now I got to dish the
ball away I can't get the shot I want. I mean,
I can shoot over anybody I want, but it's gonna
make it a little bit more difficult on the perimeter.
I don't know if it'll work, but I think that's
the one thing that I would say right off the
jump is if you hit Wenby with that and force

(22:14):
him to really handle the ball on the perimeter, maybe
that's where you get him a little unsure and a
little bit unsteady, and he's got to he's got to
really dig into his game to get around that. So
that if that was a state, that's one strategy I
would look at. We'll see if teams actually try that
with him. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (22:28):
I think the other is, you know, you get to
the defensive side of things, like if he goes for
the block and you can get him off his feet,
that's an awful lot of space that gets vacated defensively.

Speaker 1 (22:42):
You saw that a couple of times.

Speaker 3 (22:44):
Ball fake and he thought he was going up and
he goes for the big block and like, wow, that
is a lot of space in the lane that suddenly
opened up.

Speaker 1 (22:55):

Everybody who thinks brock Purty is terrible, everybody who thinks
brock Purty is great, Well, you know what we're going
to get an answer to that question. Wait, how brock

(23:36):
Purty is in the concussion protocol right now? And he
is iffy for their game on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.
There's a play that we saw that likely was the
play that potentially gave him the concussion to put him
in protocol against the Vikings. Pretty much a surprise though
we had not heard about this all week. But now

(23:56):
here he is that party's in concussion protocol after play
playing all of Monday night's game. Now there's gonna be
questions as to when did they know he was hurt?
When did this happen? When did he get hit?

Speaker 3 (24:06):
But well, they said it was on the plane ride. Yeah,
the first experience. And then obviously people are gonna want
to go back to the Supruder film. There's a couple
of plays there.

Speaker 1 (24:18):
You know, there's a couple of plays where maybe when
he took one of the quarterback sneaks, because they tried
a couple of sneaks in the second half, But it's
hard to pin down exactly when it happened. So here's Perdy,
who now may wind up missing the game, which means
Sam Sam Sam Sam Sam Sam Darnald is going to
get to take over if Perdy can't play this week.

(24:38):
And again it's very early and it's still Wednesday. He
still got a bunch of days to figure things out.
But you gotta pass benchmarks and andy by the time
you get to Friday and Saturday. So chances are we
could see Sam Donald this weekend for the Niners. Now,
what will happen if we do see Sam Donald. I'm
glad you asked me because I can tell you Sam

(24:58):
Donald will be fine, right, He will be fine as
the Niners quarterback, and he will move the team a
little bit. He will miss open receivers because that's what
Sam Darnald does. And I don't mean miss them throwing.
I mean he just won't see them. Oh wait, but
your third read the guy was wide. Oh yeah, yeah,
I didn't see that. That's that's Sam Donald, right. I
don't know that he knows what he sees downfield. He
goes his progressions enough. That was his problem with the Jets,

(25:19):
that was his problem with the with the Panthers. He
didn't see open guys. He couldn't get down and find
and find the right place to go to with the
football a right amount of time. Now, but here's the thing.
When you're throwing the ball to Christian McCaffrey out of
the backfield, it's going to make you a better player.
When you have a great tight end in George Kittle,
it's going to make you a better player the downfield
passing game, trying to get the ball deep down to
Brandon Ayuk or Deebo Samuel if he's back, and that's

(25:43):
not going to be exactly what Sam Darnald does. So
he'll be able to move the team and then because look,
the Niners are still terrific offensively, and things will be okay,
and we'll watch Donald do it and it will be
similar to brock Purty, but it won't quite be as
good as brock Purty. So if you're looking to find out,
just look, look where is the guy. Look we've told
you brock Purty is an elite game manager. That's what

(26:04):
he is, and that's the player he is, and that's
his ceiling in the NFL. And we've seen enough for
him to play to understand that that's kind of what
it is. He's not an MVP player. He's not a
guy that's gonna win games with five touchdown passes a
throw for three hundred and thirty yards. The Niners aren't
built like that. They're not built. They're not gonna get
make them throw the ball forty five fifty times a game,
it's not gonna happen. So when you understand that about

(26:28):
brock Purty, okay, well, but how do we going to
prove it? Well, when you see Sam Darnold play and
be close to the player perty is, you're gonna understand
the system works. For brock Purty, he's where he should
be he is in a great spot. Some quarterbacks spend
their whole career they don't get in the right system
for them. Perty has been able to get lucky to
go from mister irrelevant to us to a system that
fits what he does well. And now you're gonna see

(26:51):
more of a Okay, I understand the mean or the
media and where Brock Purty is. I get where we
can slot him in the NFL, which is right around
league average. It's gonna get pumped up because he plays
for the forty nine ers, who are a great team.
But great teams you can win a Super Bowl now
with an average quarterback in twenty twenty three because the
average quarterback quarterback play is really really good. Man, the

(27:12):
top two thirds of the league, the quarterback play is fantastic.
So Brock Party being a middle of the pack quarterback, yeah,
it's good enough to win. But to understand just where
he fits. We're gonna get clarity on that. And it's weird,
but we're gonna get it. If Sam Darnold plays in
his place, well, it's funny. I mean.

Speaker 3 (27:28):
One of the themes of last night's show was about
hot take nonsense and throwing stuff up against the wall,
knowing that it ain't gonna stick. He'll just get to
the next thing and the next lump of whatever you're
throwing up against a wall. Right, that's just the way
our business works. Your next prediction. And so for brock Purdy, yeah,

(27:50):
the hype was there because, well, you could put up
some pretty basic stats to support it. He's winning. That
cures everything, doesn't it. Ever, anybody goes on a winning streak,
you're the greatest.

Speaker 1 (28:03):
How do you just prove that you don't? Right? We won.

Speaker 3 (28:07):
It doesn't have to be pretty. I'm leading you to victories.
Isn't that the main objective that you know? You can
have your qbrs. You could do all that other nonsense,
and you can have a bunch of guys go to
the whiteboard and tell me how many would be interceptions,
there were, how many reads you missed, how many open
receivers you should have hit instead of making up a

(28:28):
degree of difficulty. All that nonsense doesn't matter. If you win,
you move forward. And for brock Perdy, you take a
couple of losses, and now you probably look at this
one in a much different lens, given the fact that
the two interceptions came long after these would be plays
that we're talking about of where the possible concussion occurred, right,

(28:49):
So it changes that in terms of clarity and evaluation
and what he might have seen through that process. Then
eventually we'll get the retinal camera, we'll be able to
see exactly what he was throwing to and what he
thought he saw. But we we have the for brock
perty We've talked about it all along, like how good

(29:10):
was he? You put him in the mids and upper
mids with the team, Like it's folks that were putting
him in the top five, top seven, ten, whateverything. Really,
we're escalating it that fast. Yeah, he's winning, but there's
a lot, a lot of other things going on to
make that happen. So for Sam Donald, here's your opportunity
and more for you to cry a little bit, just

(29:32):
like you did when poor Zengis worked you tonight as
the Celtics took down your nicks. If you watch Sam
Donald go out and dominate too.

(30:04):
I see, But how odd it is we're going to
find out about brock perty when somebody else plays quarterback
for the Niners. We're okay. Now we can slot them somewhere.
Now we can do it, and I'm no longer here.
I'm no longer but I'm no longer scared that Donald's
gonna go crazy. And look at this. Four touchdowns from
Sam Donald. Look at that, Oh, get a seventy eight
percent completion percent. Now I'm not worried about those days anymore,

(30:26):
not worried about that. It's a pretty good matchup against Cincinnati.

The debut of Victor Wembanyama, well, let's just say kind
of a mixed bag. The over under for total points
for him tonight was eighteen. He's going to be under.

(31:25):
The over under for rebounds was seven, seven and a half.
It's going to be under. Assists was three and a half.
Going to be under blocks was two and a half.
Gonna be under? Why? Well, nineteen minutes for Victor Webbinyama
thirteen points, five rebounds to assists and five fouls. That
is the night for Victor Webbinyama. And now the Spurs

(31:45):
trail the Mavericks one fifteen one thirteen thing look not that,
not that it was looked for a debut like this
for Wembanyama. But he's on the floor. He's playing a
decent amount of minutes in the first half, and the
Spurs look great right second half when he's in foul trouble,
he's not on the floor, and suddenly here come the
Mavericks and now it looks like they've overtaken the Spurs

(32:06):
and are in the driver's seat in this game. Look,
it's gonna happen, right, You're gonna see his when bin
Yama's impact of a game sometimes is not about what
he does numbers wise, but how he affects the floor
and the spacing and everything goes along with it. And
the Spurs were playing great when he was in the game.
They were playing great. He was plus five for the night,
only a couple of guys on the Spurs or plus

(32:28):
or plus anything tonight in this game. But he comes
out and he doesn't play, and he's in foul trouble.
He's got to figure out where he can stick his
arms and where he can't. This is gonna be the result,
so that that's gonna be the one adjustment he's going
to have to the NBA is going to be about Hey,
all right, I'm a big and I explore the floor.
How do I stay on the floor and out of

(32:48):
foul trouble. That's the one thing he's got to navigate.
But I'm not too concerned about it. The guy's got
the game to be able to do it. And look
he was he was six out of eight from the
floor tonight. You know, so far in the games. So
he's a player that looking at him, it's not gonna
be long until he's a dominant force. And but I
say long, I mean a couple of weeks a month

(33:09):
he's put the foul thing that's gonna be a big one.
Being able to stay out of foul trouble, out of
early foul trouble, getting a couple of quick ones. That's
gonna be his big adjustment.

Speaker 3 (33:17):
Yeah, the curiosity, right, body control, and look, you're gonna
test him right as a rookie hasn't earned superstar calls.

Speaker 1 (33:26):
Want to see if he gets him. So let's let's attack.

Speaker 3 (33:28):
Let's force him to give up some of that space.
See if you can get him to reach. Because it's
gonna be pretty exaggerated and pretty obvious, right, just based
on length if you can get up into him. So
uh yeah, for for when Yama again, he loves to
fly at you as you ball fake.

Speaker 1 (33:46):
He just did it again on us. Oh he just
hit a three. He just hit another three. Get to seconds,
he might get there. He just hit a three. The
game is tied with three minutes to go. Look at
that all, I's say, Webby, he's not going to reach
those numbers. And look where we're at right now. Look
where a five uddy five fourth quarter?

Speaker 3 (34:08):
He's up to twenty minutes now and getting his stuff in.
But the point, you know, as I was, you know,
you're excited utterance because you are just fired up as
they go to a TV time out on the floor.
But he did it on one of those things where
he was going for the big swat. It's like you
give up so much space, so much space finally, So

(34:31):
that that's one thing I'm sure Popovich is gonna be like,
what did we do wrong on this defensive sequence?

Speaker 1 (34:36):
How did our defense break down? Here?

Speaker 3 (34:38):
Look if he blocks it back into the third row, great,
If he blocks it and tips it to himself even better.
The old ac earl move from back when he was
in Iowa Wow, you.

Speaker 1 (34:48):
Went earl Wow.

Speaker 3 (34:49):
Okay, Well, because he did block shots differently, it wasn't
a highlight reeal hey, he rejected him into the seventh row.
It was no, I'm gonna tip the ball to myself
and now we have a possession dead of an out
of bounce play. So uh, you know, got to be
smart about it. But you know, for for women, Yama,
you go for those. Yeah, and you're gonna have some
that are great and get the crowd fired up. But

(35:10):
if you're gonna keep missing like that and give yourself
up defensively to where you're out a position, that's like
the kid that falls down in soccer thinking he's getting
the call and all of a sudden it's it's a
breakaway the other way with an odd man rush.

Speaker 1 (35:22):
Right. You told me if I go down, I'm gonna
get the call.

Speaker 2 (35:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (35:27):
Well in theory, right, get up, get up. You gambled
and you lost.

Speaker 3 (35:35):
You lose, and your teammates get nothing except a lot
of space that they have to cover up.

Speaker 1 (35:41):
Look, but I mean what I said last hour. The
Spurs they have some guys that can play and the
the impact of Wembin Yama on the floor is gonna
be more than just what can he do with the ball.
Like I said, you have to account for him. He's
someone that can hit threes, he can get down low, yes,
bang with the big body. He does way as much
as some of the other guys do. But this should

(36:03):
be a team that is a playoff team of some kind.
They shouldn't be out of the playoffs. They shouldn't be
finishing outside the top ten. With Popovich and Wemby and look,
they've got a couple of nice, you know pieces on
this team. I like where they're at. Man, I like
where they're at, and they should be a five hundred
ish team this year and maybe a couple of games under.

(36:24):
And I'm looking forward to see Wemby in the playing round.
That's kind of where I'm at. If I'm the Spurs,
you can say, what's the most realistic outcome you can
see this year that where it's not too outside, it's
not outside the realm of possibility. I would say being
in the playing round. If we can get to the
playing round, then that's successful. In Wemby's first year playing round,
that's success for us. And they can easily get there.

Speaker 3 (36:46):
Yeah, go from twenty two wins to being around five
hundred and playing meaningful basketball in the second week of April.

Speaker 1 (36:54):
That's it. That's all. That's all you can hope for.

Speaker 3 (36:56):
In this process as you learn and the curiosity is
minutes restrictions. We've talked a lot about what to expect
as the season goes on. We just talked about the
foul foul issue and learning on the defensive end. Yeah,
there's a lot to it, but you know they're gonna
be fun to watch, that's for damn sure. A lot

(37:18):
of young talent getting after it, and you know, a
good match up here on opening night watching Luca and
Company battled neck and neck. These are two teams that
I would suspect come mid April are battling and jockeying
to get into that play in tournament.

and I'm ready for a trade. I am ready for
a trying to you know Celtics. You know, don't look

(37:58):
at the main event. Nick's main event. Uh, Celtics beat
the Knicks to Night one O wit one oh four. Right,
the Celtics. Of course they get thirty points from Chris
tops Porzingis. Of course they do. Of course back in
Madison Square Garden and he's hitting three, he's five out
of nine from three point range, and he's got thirty
to go along with thirty four from Tatum. Of course

(38:19):
Porzingis does.

Speaker 3 (38:20):
That hats alterations. I mean, man, look, let me, let
me go through the stats. I mean, that's for days
with Keenan Allen.

Speaker 1 (38:31):
Hold on because I don't know, I was hang on.
I was saying I was serious when we talked about
it in the off season. Porzingis coming in and being
the number three or four guy on a team, that's great. Right,
When he's the number two guy on a team, that's
not good. But when he's the number four guy, and
you can argue he's the number four guy with with
Tatum and Brown and Holiday, you can argue he's the

(38:54):
four guy. Okay, right, you don't rely and he doesn't
have to score thirty points a game, but he can
still do this because he's still talented enough, so of
course he plays that well tonight.

Speaker 3 (39:03):
But despite that, thirty points most in a Celtics debut, Yeah, that's.

Speaker 1 (39:09):
Debut with five threes and four blocks. We've given him.
Nicks held the Knicks to twenty percent shooting. We've given
him enough fifty Okay, we've given him enough. Flower. That's fine,
that's it for. We're done with Porzingis. We're done. We're done.
We're done with Porzeg because we gotta get we gotta
get to Julius randall right, now, legally, our boss is
just said, you got to get to Julius Ress. Let's
get to do. Porzingis was good, right, the Celtics were good.

(39:34):
The Knicks fight back, they take the lead, they have
a six point lead with four minutes left. Things are
looking great, and then suddenly they can't make a shot,
and the Celtics reel off nine in a row and
they lead the rest of the way and they win
by four. Right now, it's opening night, and all right,
the Knicks have some new pieces that are coming in,
and I don't think they're gonna shoot thirty seven percent

(39:54):
from the floor, a lot out of thirty seven shut up.
I don't think Dante DiVincenzo, their big money acquisitions not
gonna score in many games, which is what happened tonight,
where maybe if he had just scored four points and
Knicks could have won. So I'm okay with everything except
except the night that was for Julius Randall, because I
feel like we've just picked up where we left off,

(40:15):
and this is Julius Randall taking too many shots when
he's not good enough a shooter right. Randal tonight scored
fourteen points. He was five out of twenty two from
the floor right, one out of five from the three
point from the free throw line, five out of twenty two.
He's a progress stopper. That's who Julius Randall is. He
had a great year three and a half years ago,

(40:37):
and the Knicks gave him a lot of money, and
he simply doesn't make enough shots to warrant getting the
ball and being as big a part of the offense
as he does. He doesn't look at the playoffs last year.
He was awful. How many three of fourteen games and
five out of fifteen games. There's too many games like
that because Randall's not somebody who was consistent. He'll have
a great night shooting and then you'll say, wow, look

(41:00):
at him. Tonight he was eleven out of fourteen, and
then the next two nights he's two out of eleven,
and he's four out of seventeen. That's who Julius Randall is.
He takes too many shots. You can't take two, you
can't take twenty two shots when this is gonna be
what it is. He can't get his own shot when
you double team, and he can't pass out of double
teams well enough. He just can't do it. And they
rely on him too much because of the status he

(41:22):
has on the team as basically being the number two
to Jalen bruns Because last year you could say, okay,
Brunson came in as a number two. He became the
best player on the Knicks. He's one of the best
players in the league. Should have been an All Star,
will be an All Star this year. He's a great,
great player. He's the new number one in the Knicks.
But it still doesn't work with him in Julius Randall
because Randal doesn't He's not efficient enough. And that's to
me what I mean. He's a progress stopper. Is that

(41:43):
some of these shots would go better if they were
to RJ. Barrett or Quentin Grimes or Emmanuel Quickly or
Devincenzo or Heart, you know, because you don't need to
be I feel like the Knicks need what we have
to give him the ball down low every other time
down the floor, because we got to see what he does,
and he'll dribble into trouble and he'll turn the ball over,
or he'll make a bad pass, or he'll more likely

(42:03):
he forces up a bad shot. And I feel like
the Knicks have just picked up with that where they
left off. And this is why I'll make this trade
offer for the Knicks. Joel Embiid. You can have any
three players you want off the Knicks roster, except it
can't be Jalen Brunson and Julius Randall's gotta be one
of them. That's the only to any three guys you want,

(42:24):
but it's can't be. It can't be Brunson and Randall's
gotta be one of the three. Let's make that deal happen.
I know Joel Embiid wants out. He's not happy, he's
not happy, he's not working James hard in his back
he's not. He's gonna play, he's not. He's playing. He's
with the team, he's off the team, he's on the team,
he's not playing. Yeah, embiid. Any three guys you want
can't be Brunson. Randall's gotta be one of them. So
there you go. There's the trade. And I will send

(42:45):
that trade into Darryl Morey's inbox forever, whether he's a
liar or not, and I'll say nice things about him
and say, I don't think you're a liar, dude, I
think you're a great guy. How about you do this
trade with the Knix because the Knicks have to find
a way to move on from being reliant on Julius
Randall because, as we've seen now for the last couple
of years, the Knicks have had pretty good teams and
you get to the playoffs and what happens You rely

(43:06):
on Randall and he can't make any shots because teams
clamp down on him. This is just who he is,
and I feel like the Knicks have picked up where
they left off with that. Hence why I'm ready for
a trade. After Night one.

Speaker 3 (43:16):
Dude who was mid to low fifties percent shooter in
La and New Orleans, and now you're hoping to scrape
to forty five forty six percent two years ago the
low at forty one. The way you describe the trade,
it's kind of like you walked in and they give
you the styrofoam container at Panda Express.

Speaker 1 (43:35):
All we got is chicken Karaoki? What do you want
for your sides? But wait, I don't watch it. No,
you gotta have chicken. That's all you got. You now
pick your sides. Damn it? All right, the lion move.
That's kind of what you just did there. Well, well,
look you gotta make the money match, and Randall makes
the money match, so okay, so you have that, and
then any two guys you want just can't have.

Speaker 3 (43:54):
Dayalen Brunson's it's one of those things where dollars are
not equal, right, It's like even it's in NBA dollars. Yeah,
it makes sense in actual player on court, it's like,
look at how close their salaries are.

Speaker 1 (44:09):
That's because you spend like mad men. Dude. It's not
my fault. It's a fantasy trade where you say, hey,
I want this guy. Take a look at my roster,
tell me what you like. The only guy I'm not
trading is Jalen Brunson, and you gotta take ud. But
anybody take a look at it, tell me what you like,
and you can have almost anybody off my roster you want.
That's how it works.

Speaker 3 (44:30):
Oh boy, that's where we're at fantasy land once again.
You know we got a fan uh you know, our
buddy coming up in Rick Buker. But uh, you know
they're celebrating Porzengis in Boston and you know what are
are people on the Sports Hub celebrating a lot of
stuff tonight.

Speaker 1 (44:48):
We'll get to that coming up in a bit because
we got Marconi Awards talk. Yeah, buddy, straight ahead. Rick Buker,
NBA insider Fox Sports One Extraordinary stops by his take
on the first two opening nights of the NBA. I'm
sure he's gonna have a big, fiery mixtake that's just
gonna piss me off. I just like it's the first
two opening nights. Yeah. Well, basically opening night for the

(45:10):
NBA is like a month long because you get great
matchups all the time. And here's opening night. Here's another
opening night. It's another opening night. Every bit of drama
we've seen tonight What about Wemby's debut. Keep it right
here because this is Fox Sports Radio.
