NBA In Season Tournament.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
After a brawl early in the game that saw the
ejection of Draymondgreen and two other players, the Warriors lead
the Wolves eighty three seventy nine, meanwhile no One and
taking the in Season Tournament more serious than the Lakers.
They are thumping the Grizzlies right now.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Yeh they are.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
I mean, everybody does, and that's a terrible team except
the Clippers. They are thumping the Grizzlies eighty two fifty five.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
How many points does John Moran have? He's got as
many as wins. James Harden has just counting the days
till he's able to get back on the court.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
If the Lakers win this tournament, if they win the
n season tournament, A is their parade and b do
Lebron and Ad back out of the rest of the
season saying, hey, mission accomplished.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Man, we did my job. We want a title. Well,
I mean there might be a misunderstanding that this gives
you an automatic buy because a couple of players were
floating that out in terms of incentivizing it for years forward.
Of it's an automatic playoff Berth kind of like the
old we're playing major League Baseball in two halves and
we were the first half champions. We get oh, ye're
(01:54):
doing the second half? Taking my feet up. Yeah, just
hang out, just playing some young guys, see if they
get any what they got. But yeah, so I could
see that from Lebron and Ad like we're gonna take
some time now we earned it. I want a championship.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
I never thought how weird that was, because I gotta
explain the millennials about this but during the strike year
of nineteen eighty one in Major League Baseball, they stopped
playing midway through the season, and then they started up
again like two months later, and they decided that whoever
was in first place when the strike happened, they were
winners of the first half, and they automatically made the playoffs.
(02:31):
And whoever won thee then and records went back to
zero zero, And whoever won the second half you got
into the playoffs, and you played the winner of the
first half. So the winner of the first half of
the NLES played the winner of the second half of
the NLES and on and on. It was a crazy
ass playoff. And if I remember right, the Reds had
the best record in baseball for both that and they
didn't make the playoffs. They didn't make the play a
(02:53):
game and a half out the first time, and like
a game and a half out the second time.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
The most asinine decision. Yes, we're gonna do.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
You won Wait a minute, why well, because so wait,
we're already in the playoffs. Yeah, you do the rest
of the way nothing, all right, fine, So we're in right,
so we have free time to do nothing. Yes, but
in this in this day and age of the NBA.
They would take time.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
You would you would yeah, no way, No, I really
strained myself to win that tournament, win this tournament.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
And if the if just say you did that is
say the lad say okay, when the Lakers win this tournament,
because they're.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
Why will the Lakers win this tournament?
Speaker 1 (03:30):
As they're bleeping back, Well, they are treating it more
serious than anybody.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Lebron is playing tonight, is he? Is he not? It's
like Game seven of the NBA Finals.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
If you said, okay, the winner of the n season
tournament automatically makes the playoffs, you would not see Lebron
in a d until the beginning of May. They would
just be gone. Maybe you see him. You might see
him like All Star weekend.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
Hey I'm out here. We can play a little bit now.
But you they would not play at I think they
would be a system of playing every other No, do
you get are you do you get Lebron? Because the NBA,
you know, want to stand in and come on guys, No,
you got to you gotta give the people something.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
No, no, you can't. Lebron would say, no, sorry, so
it's Tuesday. Is that me or a D I can't. No, no, no,
you can't. No, they went off together. Then know what
they're both, they're both clutch clients. They don't want off
you play this that I played the other night.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
No, no, no, no, why don't you go get Levigne in
here and then we don't have to play it all
because the other clutch guy and Caruso December fifteenth, your gay,
it's a double could be happening. Well, you got it? Yeah.
Can you imagine a Reeves to Caruso alley you dunk?
That would break the internet.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Yeah, it probably would, It probably would, but yes, uh yeah,
your your guy, Zach Levine.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
Apparently Bull's taking phone calls on him. Oh, they're taking
phone calls on everybody. Let's be honest.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
I think they're still taking phone calls on Scottie Pippen.
We still if you want them, if you want him,
we still have his rights if you want him.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
That guy gets dragged so much. Did you want him? Well,
he didn't make m j good. He did what they said.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
Yeah, there would be there would have been no Michael
Jordan if not for Scotti Pippen right in the balls,
it'd be no Michael Jordan, of course. But we'll have
more NBA on the way as again, Lakers are thumping
the Grizzlies, and we're watching the Warriors trying to hold on.
We're also trying to watch the Clippers hold on and
get their first win with Lebron James. They lead the
(05:19):
Nuggets by two excuse me early in the fourth Sorry
with James Harden. Sorry, the Clippers trying to get their
first win with James Harden, not Lebron James. I meant
to say James Harden, their first win with James Harden.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
They lead by two.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
Still midway through the fourth quarter. But something I agree
with Jerry Jones on I mean show, I'm sure I
agree with Jerry Jones. Yes, did his weekly appearance on
one O four to three The Fan today and was
asked a very pointed question about Dak Prescott, who was
on a bit of a heater the last three three
four weeks. Was asked, Jerry, let me talk about MVP candidates. Hey,
(05:57):
is Dak Prescott on that short ligt Jerry, what do
you think?
Speaker 3 (06:02):
I really like Dak and I think he is by
far one of the best I've ever did see.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Okay that the Oz were good? You had the uz
in the right place. Too much of a big forced
Southern accent. It's kind of a little bit more gravelly
and a little bit yeah, a little bit more. You
got to give more enunciation on the words like molasses,
Like you gotta say molasses and it's got to take
you all the way through.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
You can't just say molasses. So but we'll do it again.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
I'm try now Here's Jerry Jones asked if Dak Prescott
should be in the MVP conversation.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
Do you think that Dak is an MVP candidate right now?
Speaker 4 (06:40):
I do, I certainly do. He's put games are together here,
a series of games that are the best of his
career and in my view and at the best of
right at the tops of any that I've seen. It's
the fact that he's doing them back to back, and
(07:03):
it's the fact that really, of course his his play,
he's impacting those games.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
How I do, Oh, he did very well.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Again, there are a lot of us in there, because
the older he gets, the more us there are. But
I honestly I agree with Jerry Jones if you're talking
about the top three list for MVP right right now,
because you go like top five top seven, top ten,
top three list for MVP.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
I'll give you this. I'll give you c J.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
Stroud number one, Jared Goff number two, and I'll give
you Dak Prescott number three.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
Right. C J.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
Stroud has been phenomenal. Right, you know what I loved
about him? He look, he's got a great mentality. He
throws that big pick against the Bengals that looks like, hey,
that could cost us the game. He comes back and
gets them down the field for the game winning field goal.
Speaker 4 (07:53):
C J.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
Stroud is continuing to get better and better. He's forceful,
he is daring, He's got a short memory.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
He is some thing.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
Jared Goff statement game against the Chargers. Oh, I'm on
the road. You don't think I can win on the road.
Here's a big game for me.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
Yes, he is really bullied by the fact that.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
But I know, just for saying, I know, he's got
two phenomenal running backs with him. Right, But Jared Goff
is on putting points on the board. Doesn't matter if
he has his receivers, doesn't matter if he doesn't have
his receivers. Jamison Williams is gonna be his stud. Jamison
Williams is not even a guy Josh Reynolds is the
number one. Josh Renolds doesn't get a pass, right, doesn't
matter who is there. Jared Goff is playing phenomenal and
(08:34):
the Lions keeps stacking wins. Right, these guys CJ. Stroud
and Jared Goff will cut through because they're different stories.
It's not just another year of Hey, where do we
write this Mahomes year versus other years, which is just
like But honestly, Dak, Dak's been the best quarterback the
last month right there. And the NFL season has been
going on about two and a half months now, and
(08:56):
the last month Dak has played extremely well. Now, he
had other big games earlier in the year, but the
last month, nobody's been better than he has been. He
just has to maintain it. And that's the thing that's
been missing for Dak Prescott his whole career has been
maintaining it, doing it in the clutch, not having two
weeks where he's good and two weeks where you can't
find him. One week where he throws for four hundred
(09:16):
yards and four touchdowns, the next week where he loses
to the Arizona Cardinals. His issue has always been he
can't sustain it. But the last month, like I said,
he's been on a heater, and I got to give
him credit because he's right there with everybody else and
the Cowboys are winning and they're looking really good doing it.
So if I'm looking at my top three, you know,
you know how much I like Stroud and Jared Goff,
and I would put Dak in the top Look at you, Yeah,
I'm not quite there. I mean he's forty to one.
(09:38):
If you want to go down the road there, that
doesn't put him anywhere. You're even the top ten at
this point. Your guy Josh Allen Is still has better odds.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
It has been better.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
Make the odds better in Vegas, they got to I'm
gonna make a phone call tomorrow to the Caesars Palace
and let them know that you see the stats and
see what happens se where Dak is.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
Just let you know.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
You know, I knew Caesar, uh you know, he was
a guy, and I said, hey, you don't be a
good snack of grapes. Let's all have grapes, and you
know what, maybe wear a laurel on your head. I
think that that's pretty good. We don't even have hats yet,
and in Dallas the court, you know, we have the
big ten gallon hats, but we don't have him yet.
So uh, just wear that laurel uh and have it
on your head and get a hearty handshake. Yeah, finish
the joke.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
Well, well, you know, I gotta call mel Brooks with
that one. I gotta call him mal He's one of
my one of my youngest friends. I gotta call him up.
Gott tell them about that.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
Nicely done. Yeah for Dak, I mean it's all eyes
are now on him with what he and Cede Lamb
have become and the fact that as a.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
Receiver in the NFL city Lamb right, well, I mean
he was a lady guy. Everybody was calling a bum
a couple of weeks ago. So it's kind of fun.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
Uh. But Brandon Cooks emerged from a cocoon. It appeared
this last week, and suddenly maybe you've got another another
receiver that pops up. They've gotten almost nothing from Tony Pollard,
so uh, Rico dadell uh in your fantasy waiver wires
for this week might be worth a pickup because you
might start seeing him get a little more of a workload.
(11:04):
It's a name, that's a great name. No, I mean
guy named Rico. I mean, let's go. But yeah, for
for Dak, he's got all opportunity to go do great
things because they're gonna be showcased a lot. And I
posited a theory with you last night and carried it
over to the iWatch a flex podcast about playing all
(11:25):
these night games and off schedule games or whatever. Is
that really healthy for teams? Does that is that conducive
to winning long term? I don't know. I don't know
that we've done the sample size and full research on that.
But for Dak Prescott, you know you're gonna see him
in that four o'clock window off in time every So
(11:46):
the opportunity is there, not that you have to impress
the pollsters like you're an AP twenty five back in
the day, you know, running up the score and all.
But it's still the same idea. Style points are going
to win the fight for Dak Prescott to get the
respect that so many have long said he should get.
But when you wear the star, it's going back to
your laurel crown. Heavy is the head who wears the crown. Nah,
(12:09):
I extend to you this Laurel and Hearty handshake.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
Oh.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
I always loved that line. Laurel and Hardy. You know
I knew Laurel Hardy went. We went to high school together.
Laurel and sat on my left side, Hardy on the
right side. Couldn't I always wanted to fight. They were like, oh,
you guys. It was always great. I love those guys.
Speaker 3 (12:27):
I have no idea why they were so quiet. They
were funny. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
Laurel didn't talk a lot, Hardy didn't talk a lot,
so I did all the talking. That's kind of how
it went. And they all wore gray suits, black ties
all the time.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
You know.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
They were the guys that said, you know what, I
think the I think the White Sox are gonna throw
the World Series. We should bet on it. I was like, oh,
I don't make a lot of money and made a
lot of money. Tell you, I told Seacott you're gonna
lose the first game. He said yeah.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
I said, okay. You know our guys Petrson money over.
On AM five seventy, they had their live guy. Birthday
of the day was d B. Sweeney really sixty two
years old today? Wow? You know what? And dB sweet.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
I was watching Cutting Edge was on today that I
was so excited, like, oh, cut of guys.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
Truly is the holiday season and we get a skating
movie in I.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
Get like the last forty five minutes of Cutting Edge,
and I'm on the computer doing my thing this week.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
I two.
Speaker 1 (13:11):
I got the last forty five minutes of Beneath the
Planet of the Apes the other day, and then I
got the last forty five minutes of the Cutting Edge
tow I'm like, I'm on a heater, man, I'm on
a heater. It's pretty good. Oh Man, exit, albouta Fresca exit,
swallen down. The Jason Smith Show.

Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon song live from the tirerac dot Com studios.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
How will the Clippers blow another game? Let me count
the ways.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
We'll have that story coming up in a few minutes
the late night in season NBA tournament action coming down
to the end. But sometimes the biggest story in sports
becomes the biggest story in the news, and that clearly
was the case today as an arrest was made on
suspicion of manslaughter in Adam Johnsson's death. Adam Johnson, who
(15:01):
was the for Pittsburgh Penguins player who died on the
ice in a freak incident, I'm gonna say incident a
few weeks ago, in which his neck was slashed by
the skate blade of an opposing player. In the beginning,
when this story was reported, it was a freak accident,
freak accident, and I didn't want to go see the
(15:22):
video of it because it was you know, why do
I want to see?
Speaker 3 (15:24):
Why does anybody want to see that?
Speaker 1 (15:26):
And then it was one of those days where when
I first got online and got on Twitter, it's like
someone got the video and put it up online. Right,
it's a it's a league in England, and you see
the play and I'll paint the picture for you without
getting into the graphic details, because I completely understand why
there are charges of manslaughter against the person they arrested,
(15:49):
and we are thinking that it's Matt pet Grave, who
was the player who whose skate blade it was that
cut Adam Johnson's neck and you know, bled to death
on the ice and on his way to the hospital.
When I saw this and I saw it being reported
as a freak accident, I said, this is not an accident.
This is a dirty play that got way out of hand,
(16:11):
all right, now, the play is and you know, Mike,
you and I both being hockey fans, I played hockey
for a long time in my life. I can tell
you about that. I can tell you about this this play,
Adam Johnson is skating over the blue line and there
is a tea with the puck uh on the on
the left side of the boards, and he's skating over
the line and a teammate is is kind of skating
(16:34):
in towards him, and it looks like Adam John's supposed
to stop. His teammate's going to get in deep and
then be an option for a pass or rebound off
a shot. And Pet Grave, the defender, is right on
the tail of this player. He's trailing him into the
zone and Adam Johnson stops because you like picture, if
(16:54):
you haven't seen it, picture a skater going straight down
down the side, and he's and he's kind of sting
because he wants to set up the play like who's
coming in, who's streaking in? He wants hit somebody with
the pass, and you have a player who is skating
kind of towards him at an angle and pet Grave
is right behind him. Now Johnson's got the puck and
(17:15):
it looks like he's gonna stop, and he can make
a decision. He can either try to shoot the puck
into the closer to the net find somebody, or by
time by stopping and kind of scare its skirting along
inside the blue line and making space. And because pet
Grave and his teammate are flying past him, when he stops,
(17:36):
pet Grave loses his balance and his skate blade comes
all the way up accidentally cuts Adam Johnson's neck. They
stop play, and after that you see what happens. And
when I saw this play, I said, this is not
an accident. Not that he meant to kill him, obviously,
but this was a dirty play because you can see
(17:59):
him kick his life leg up really high, and people's
legs don't get up that high in hockey.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
They don't. What he was trying to do was one
of two things.
Speaker 1 (18:07):
Either he wanted to give him a shot like in
the chest or something like I want to you know,
if you're gonna try to.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
Get by solar plexus.
Speaker 1 (18:15):
Or more than likely I'm gonna flash my leg up
in the air so it stops you from cutting over
to the middle because he cuts off because if he
goes over to the middle, he's got a lot of
ice to work with. He comes and he gets a
shot on goal or something else happens. So one of
those two things, either my leg is up in the
air to either I'm gonna clock you in the chest
up high and make you pay for it, or I'm
(18:37):
gonna try to scare you or will make you hesitate
before you can cut over. And what happens is obviously
his skate blade gets the neck of Adam Johnson, and yeah,
I get why they're going after charge of this because
that was a dirty play.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
I mean, you get your skate up. Nobody gets their
skate up.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
I've never seen someone skate up that high in the
NHL ever. I mean even when people get knocked on
their butt off of checks, their skates are lower.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
Well, there's actually a play from tonight's game between the
Flames and Canadians that's starting to make the rounds a
little bit where you get a little bit of an
entanglement and then as a player goes over, the foot
comes up into the facial area of another player from
the from the Canadians. So we're keeping an eye on
(19:24):
that and updates along the way. But yeah, to your point,
you see the knee kind of catches. The knee from
pet Grave hits Johnson first and then the leg extends
and that's where we get the contact. You got extra
skaters and trying to set up a play, right, because
there's if you look at just the the clip that's
made the rounds, you have four defenders and there's only two.
(19:48):
He's only got one teammate, Johnson in the the four
round of third skates at the end. It's so he's
just trying to stop.
Speaker 1 (19:55):
It's not an odd man rush. It's not a play
where hey, they're putting pressure on us. He's trying again
just and and it's it's not a play where they
have an advantage. This is, hey, we're over the line.
We're trying, we're trying to get something going here when
we're two on four here. Yeah, and this is why,
this is why I look at pet Grave and I go, Okay,
he's trying to really eat. Like I said, either get
him in the chest, which is gonna stop the play
(20:15):
and stop him, or to stop him from cutting over
to the middle and getting open ice. But he knew
what he was doing when he put his leg up
in the air, No doubt in my mind he knew
what he was doing. I'm gonna do this, and it's dangerous,
but I'm gonna do this because this is how I
want him.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
The intent is to be physical and again, you know,
catching him with the knee and the pads initially, and
I think that's the intent, right, I stop him on
a dime here, Instead the skate gets up and we
have the the loss of life. And now for the
last couple of weeks trying to parse this out, I
don't know, and I've not seen any accounting in any
(20:52):
of the reports from the game of any physicality or
encounters you know that might have precipitated something to escalate
to this point. But certainly a tragedy on the ice.
Manslaughter charges right, different from murder when we talk about
being the foresight, the forethought and intent of the deadly act.
(21:17):
So just a grizzly moment in a sport that we love.
We obviously know blades. There's been a lot of the
improvement in a lot of the equipment, and there's always
the debate on what you can do to safeguard against
these type of incidences, and certainly in the aftermath of that,
that'll come forward again.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
And you know not to make this. I don't want
to say worse than this, because how could you make
it worse? Petgrave had his first game the other night
and he got a standing ovation. No, that's right at home.
I mean again this you're talking about a league in Europe.
But I'm like, d you got a standing ovation. I
get that he's back, But you saw the play, right,
I mean, people, if you see the play and you
know anything about the sport, you know that he kicked
(22:00):
that leg up and this is the big phrase, with purpose.
He put that leg up in the air with propse.
This was not I lost control of my legs, because
that doesn't happen that high. You're talking about a guy
who was falling down, supposedly falling straight down. How does
your leg get up that high unless you're trying it right.
He's almost like using his his left leg as a
as like a joist to try to I can I
(22:23):
can use this and and and and tilt his whole
body where his torso and his arms are going towards
the ground and his left leg is coming up and
he and he kicks over at him. I mean with purpose.
That that's what I said. That's with purpose that was
tried to du right.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
You didn't get knocked into by the other skaters, your
teammate or Johnson's teammate to where you would have lost
your balance or had any of that transpire. So yeah,
that that's where the case comes in. And I get it.
You know, the fans trying to be supportive. This guy's
back on the ice. Obviously a harrowing experience, but we
(23:01):
have a loss of life. Right there becomes the reality
and recognition of the situation for what it is. And
now we get charges filed today, and obviously it's a
case we'll all be watching with great interest. So we
go because you know your daughter playing youth sports, my
daughter playing youth sports. You see some dangerous stuff that happens, right,
(23:24):
you know, wearing cleats and spikes up. You know, whether
it's covering a base or how many times do we
see a bad tackle, Like anytime a girl in the
at any level or men watching even all the way
to the EPL, they go for a slide tackle. I
retrench in my seat, like I get nervous that we're
(23:45):
going to see the high contact where they come in
on the high ankle, or they catch the shin or
all of a sudden, we've got a leg buckling. So
whenever it happens in youth sports, I'm on the edge
of my seat. And not for the good reasons.
Speaker 1 (23:58):
Yeah, that you want to be free your kids playing
soccer or basketball or whatever it is.
Speaker 3 (24:03):
You get those dangerous plays. We we're talking about it before, right,
the the fracases in these NBA games today, and did
you step into my lane to get back down on
the court after a jump shot? Intentional or not?
Speaker 1 (24:19):
Like all of those things, there's gamesmen shipping, and then
there's dangerous and reckless play. And this is beyond the
shadow of a doubt reckless, right, because that's the difference,
because you talk about the plays that you know your
heart's in your throat because here comes a play that
you don't know how it can get out of control. Now,
is it always a dirty play, No, it's just a
physical play that because of the size of players, you know,
(24:40):
you don't know this could get out of Here's a
bigger fourteen year old girl versus a smaller to execute
the move right, you're going to try to do, you know,
a slide tackle right because you're not a professional and
you're like, hey, I've got this in my arsenal now
because I've done it with a coach a couple of times.
But this is a guy who knew what he was doing.
(25:00):
He knew exactly I know what I'm doing getting my
leg up in the air. Not for a second I'm
gonna try to kill him and slash his face or
anything like that, But it's it's do I I want
to stop him from making a play, and either that's
eskate to the chest or it's stopping you from WHOA
escape blade just ran across my vision and now I'm
I'm I'm pausing for a second and I lose control
(25:20):
of the puck or you know, I can't skate to
the middle of the ice and make some room for
a shot. That's what this was, and that's why I'm
gonna look, I go, Yeah, I get filing charges against
him because that was the intent. He did that with purpose.
You can't you can't tell me he didn't. You can't
tell me that that wasn't a cannabis and you know,
just watch I did never wanted to watch it, but
it just so just popped in.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
I'm like, what is this?
Speaker 1 (25:41):
Oh my god, that's that play. And I've never watched
it past two seconds after that, like you see it
stops and that said, I'm like, okay, so you can
you can actually see it without seeing the aftermath of it.
Speaker 3 (25:55):
And and and you watch and you see the lego
up and go. That's not natural. That's not it.
Speaker 1 (25:59):
That's not a natural falling down of oh of falling
and I lost my balance.
Speaker 3 (26:05):
I did this. That is he knew what he was doing.
Speaker 1 (26:07):
He knew where Johnson was, he knew what is what
is uh what the player he was tailing was doing.
And as I'm going down and I don't know that
he thought about it. If I'm just trying to get
into it now, I don't know if he thought about it.
This is what I'm gonna do on this play. But
falling down is when you make that split decision. I'm
gonna do this and stop him from making a play,
(26:27):
right Like in the Falling Down, it's oh man, I'm
taking myself out of the play. How do I do
the best thing possible for my team? And that's getting
my skate up, which is big time wrong and dirty,
But I think that was probably where it is in
that in that heat of the moment of I'm taking
myself out of the play.
Speaker 3 (26:45):
Now. Yeah, the more I've watched it, I don't think
he's falling at all. And again this is me, you know,
subruder film and watching it frame for frame, because you
only have that one angle, right, that's aw, we get
one angle up, Yeah, that's it. The Johnson's teammates skates by,
and it looks like he pauses like he's to deliver
a blow. Yeah, and he's going to stop him in
his tracks right there, and then he stumbles because he
(27:07):
makes contact with one of Johnson's legs, and that's when
he stumbles to the ice, just in a horrible situation. Again,
we'll keep an eye on it as it gets into
the courts and the next phases of this. But you know,
all thoughts to Johnson's family, friend's teammates who are on
the ice, and all those people in the arena that
watch this unfold, that's not something you're forgetting.
Speaker 1 (27:29):
Now you say that in Johnson's aunt Carrie Johnson put
out this statement just a few moments ago, because again,
this is new news today about the arrest and police
have not said that they arrested Matt pet Grave, but like,
who else are they gonna I mean, this is what happened.
She put out this statement saying, quote, she is glad
the police are doing what they're supposed to be doing
and that they're being diligent. We're just gonna have to
(27:50):
let it play out and see what happens. Whatever they've decided.
I would have had to live with it. But I'm
just glad they're being diligent with doing what they're supposed
to be doing. And it is there's what look at
this and goes, was this a malicious intent for something,
for some kind of mischief or a criminal mischief or something?
Was just some kind of intent that is not in
the rules with hockey, And when it comes down to it, yeah,
(28:12):
the rules of the rules of life and the rule
the laws of society actually get onto a hockey. Oh,
we don't have rules of No, it's the rules rules apply.
You can't you know, you can't get away with something
on a field of play that you wouldn't be able
to get away with off the field to play. So
I'm glad they're doing this because this this to me,
that's what it is.
Speaker 3 (28:28):
Now.
Speaker 1 (28:29):
I don't know where you go from this, because what's
pet Grave gonna say? I was falling? I didn't know
what I was doing? What what are you gonna What
are you gonna get?
Speaker 4 (28:36):
Right?
Speaker 1 (28:36):
I mean I don't. I don't know where you're gonna
get from this. And this is gonna be where, however
it's decided, it's gonna like it's gonna be in a
situation like this where people are gonna see that play.
Speaker 3 (28:46):
There will be.
Speaker 1 (28:47):
Experts testifying who will probably say a lot of things
that you and I are saying about it, because that's
what the play was. And and you'll have to decide
from there does this guy deserve to go to prison
for it?
Speaker 3 (28:57):
Does he not?
Speaker 1 (28:57):
And then he's gonna talk, and he's gonna take the
stand and say what you have to say. And and
that's how this is gonna go. It's gonna be a
very very weird way that this actually unfolds.
Speaker 3 (29:06):
Well, But as you try to mount, you know your case,
you're gonna go back and find all footage you can
of him with physicality potentially where there might have been
reckless how many times has he, you know, done one
of these? And on the other side, and I'm seeing it,
you know, as the day has gone on, and certainly
here in the end of the evening, as the NHL
(29:28):
Games all coming to ends here on a Tuesday night,
is well, look here's this guy slipping. Here's one of
the greatest skaters ever, and look at how he loses
his feet. So that's the other argument is that it
can happen that fast. So you're gonna see a lot
of this play out with everybody trying to roll through.
(29:49):
Uh here's you know, Pet Graves history. And on the
other side, here's a as many incidences of top skaters
and players in the heat of a moment losing their
ability to keep skating forward, losing their foot, losing their traction,
whatever the case is, being knocked off and their legs
(30:12):
flying in the air. That's what you're gonna see. You're
gonna see that battle play out and we'll see how
it gets to courtroom. But from the statement from Johnson's aunt, yeah,
you just at least want to see an investigation. You
want people to take it seriously and have it come
to an end to make a determination.
Speaker 1 (30:30):
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon live from the
tire rack dot Com Studios. We'll have big NBA reaction
to the night that we are seeing coming up in
a little bit, but straight ahead, what you need to
know the big takeaway from the newest college football playoff pole.
Speaker 3 (30:45):
Keep it right here, Jason a bike Fox.
Speaker 2 (30:48):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 3 (30:55):
So are you in?
Speaker 4 (30:56):
Like?
Speaker 3 (30:56):
It is entirely like? Hey, it's all in the early
two thousands. Music tonight is all right, very good. But
I'm asking you, Jason, where's the love? Where is the
the Black Eyed Peas?
Speaker 2 (31:06):
Right?
Speaker 3 (31:06):
Is he gonna play that? Hey? Do you know what that? Seriously?
Do you know what the difference is between the black
Eyed peas and chickpeas?
Speaker 4 (31:14):
One?
Speaker 1 (31:14):
I can eat the black eyed peas can sing you
a song, but chickpeas can only hum us one.
Speaker 3 (31:22):
Wow you not thank you. I'll be here all week.
I'll be here all week some Mike Harmon show, Fox
Sports Radio. You know how many people I would say, Smith, Look,
how funny is the black I haven't heard that since
Moby Dick was a guppy. Uh it was. It was
(31:46):
so quiet. It's that look of mouse urinating in church. Uh.
Speaker 1 (31:50):
You know when I tell that joke, I go, hey,
you know the different between black eyed peas and chickpeas.
And I get people go like, well, black eyed peas
are technically and this, this, this, yeah, and then I've
give them that and they.
Speaker 3 (31:59):
Look at me, going want to talk to you again? Well,
I mean, look, if you want to clear an area
at a party, like say you've gone to the I
don't know, the buffet table in you're in the you're
looking to pilon some shrimp or something. That's the way
to clear folks away. Pion shrimp. Because if you're starting
with that joke, it only gets worse, That's true.
Speaker 1 (32:18):
Yeah, yeah, oh, I know what I'm gonna get now,
I'm out.
Speaker 3 (32:22):
I'm out now, you know what I think? They just
put out a tray of sandwiches over there.
Speaker 1 (32:27):
The night in the NBA and some big takeaways coming
up in a few minutes. But we saw the latest
college football playoff pole come out earlier tonight and not
a lot of changes. Oh Georgia's number one over Ohio
State doesn't matter. There's still a lot of time left
to go.
Speaker 3 (32:40):
But for today it's outrage. That's great. We've got a
tougher strength to schedule, We've beaten better teams. Our conference
is better. How dare you?
Speaker 1 (32:48):
The top four teams are unchanged in the playoffs because
it's still Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and Florida State. The
team's on the outside looking in Washington, Oregon, Texas, and Alabambama. Uh,
you have Washington with no losses, Oregon, Texas, Alabama each
with one loss.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
Louisville kind of hanging around at number ten with one loss.
Speaker 1 (33:09):
But these seven, these eight teams are the ones we
look to for all the drama. And what we've seen
this week is the same thing from a week ago
and the same thing from the first playoff. Well, this
is the third This is the third one is that
we're gonna get to a point where we are in
a big, full throated argument over somebody getting left out.
That's bigger than it's ever been before. Because when you're
(33:33):
arguing Cincinnati or Boise State and then it's Texas, A
and m or it's that's not something that is gonna
have a lot of legs, and you say we need
a new playoffs, some change has to happen.
Speaker 3 (33:44):
Well, nobody's coming in full throated. They're gonna say, hey,
we've got a problem. Right, But on the list of
things the NZAA and all these committees have had to
deal with, you think that one ranks among the top problems.
Speaker 1 (33:57):
No, but when we get to a point where being
left out of a tournament is Alabama for whatever circumstance,
sure or Texas an undefeated Washington because there's clearly a
path where they can get left out. If Michigan and
Ohio State play a forty five to forty two game,
guess what both those schools are getting in. Guess who's
(34:19):
not getting in? Washington or Washington. The conference hasn't done
them favors this last month. When you're talking about an
undefeated Power five champion that could be left out, well.
Speaker 3 (34:27):
I mean, but they're disintegrating. So you say, ah, you're
leaving it. It's true for now, that's true. Yeah, well,
but you're going to a different conference. So it's not
like you're gonna pay the piper for the Pac twelve
being pissed. Hey, we finally have a team that's up here,
they crumbled because you have UCLA. They're gonna fire their
coach either this week, and they're not gonna do it
this week because they don't have too much money. Yeah
they can wait. Wait a couple of weeks. You wait
(34:49):
a couple of weeks, and I think think it falls
in half. But you've got Colorado, the darlings of college football.
They're not even gonna make a ball at this point.
And then USC's falling off a cliff. So so all
the goodwill of hey, look how strong the Pac twelve is,
now it went to hell.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
That's gone now. So you can see where if that happens.
That's like the nuclear option for this playoff format is
that you are seeing heritage, big time popular teams. Were
an undefeated Power five team not getting We've never had that.
We've had discrepancies, we've had debates where it's yeah, maybe
this team should be maybe, but when you're talking Alabama, Texas,
(35:26):
no loss, Washington team, this is where if this had
happened six years ago, we'd have been in year six
of the twelve team playoff by now. Instead we're getting
it next year. But if this happened, like I feel
that collegeable payoff has been lucky. They've been lucky that
so far they've been rolling sevens and eleven's that all
the controversy at the end is really not that big
a deal. But this year is that is that year
(35:49):
because we're not saying, hey, here's Mississippi State or here's
South Florida who is eight? No, no, it's not take
Power five conference team X versus nonpower or five conference
team with no losses. But it's different because now you
are seeing this would be the NCAA's worst nightmare. Now,
the thing is somebody big is gonna get left out
(36:09):
and be really pissed. But in the end, we're really
able to say, well, yeah, sorry about that. But we're
going to twelve teams next year, and that's gonna be
the big, the big reveal that everybody's gonna say it's
gonna happen. We're gonna say, why don't we have this
twelve team playoff earlier? Why do we have why why
do we wait so long to get this twelve team playoff?
That's how it's gonna go.
Speaker 3 (36:25):
Yeah, I mean, look, you have the that was national
champion down in Florida a couple of years ago. Don't
go trying to diminish that they raised a banner and everything.
But to your point, Yeah, if you had some of
these blue bloods, particularly with the amount of alumni voices
and media voices, I mean, I think of Alabama in
(36:47):
particular and the love of Nick Saban in that program
or what it's meant to college football. Yeah, that would
spur some change an SEC team like that being left out. Sure,
given where they've been as a power broker going forward.
Sure that's where the PAC twelve loses any of those
tiebreaker kind of arguments, is they don't have it.
Speaker 1 (37:07):
Exit I bout of Fresco, Exit Swollen Dome, The Jason
Smith Show with Mike Carbon. Trust me, the NCAA has
been lucky until this point. They haven't gotten it. Now
they're gonna get it in the final year coming up.
Speaker 3 (37:18):
You're gonna get it. Oh. Two huge stories out of
the NBA. Fox
