Speaker 1 (00:54):
Clearly, the death of OJ Simpson today has sparked so
much conversation about so many different things, and we talked
about it last hour. I told you my reaction is
I don't really have a reaction because there's no one
there's no peace for anybody there's no there's nothing but
more frustration and anger, and it's like, you know, he
died and that's it, and edwarre reliving everything else one
(01:16):
more time, all over again.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
There are a lot of memes that were going around today.
Some of them are just way way off the charts.
I mean, I went and saw Late Night with the
Devil yesterday. Okay, it's about a talk show and summoning
demons and all. Yeah that, but folks saying, hey, he's
on mister mister Toad's Wild Riding.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Real Wait wait, I'll tell you two things. One when
I first moved to l because I saw him once
in a restaurant he did yeah, oh my god. This
actually is a very funny story.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
What years This is ninety six, This is spring of
ninety six McDonald's Stop Stop.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
This was at did you almost yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:57):
Because he was working. Good thing you didn't them off.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
We had a softball game on a Wednesday night, I
want to say, and we were looking for a place
to go eat after obviously, and we usually go to
this one restaurant, but what but for some reason we
didn't want to go, so we went to an alteredo,
which is a which is. You know, there's a big
chain of Elterito's across country. So we go to Elterito
that's in Santa Monica and we all we all get
and and my two of my good friends and I.
(02:21):
We walk in right after the game is over, and
it's like the there's a bar area and then there's
a restaurant and we walk into the restaurant and we
walk right in and we walk right by standing right
there having a drink with some with some woman is
O J. Simpson. And we walk in. We both go whoa, whoa.
So we go sit down at the table.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
Everybody has the same We were like whoa was it
an audible whoa?
Speaker 1 (02:43):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (02:43):
No, we were like, well, like I remember walking going
oh and I kind of stopped like a excitation, Yeah yeah, yeah,
yeah it's We go sit down and we're just like whispering, going,
oh my god, that's OJ Simpson.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Who's he? Oh my god. It was some blonde woman
he was with having a drink and we're like, oh wow, OJS.
And he was. He stayed there for like, I know,
maybe a half hour. Nobody want to talk to him.
Nobody said he was just there with her having a drink.
But he's standing right at the entrance to the route.
You walk right into the restaurant and he's standing right there.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
You sure he wasn't a greeter.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
I mean no, it was not. Where at El Toto, No,
I don't know. I'll kill you. Sit to sit down.
We have the appetizer nachos, and can come out and
then and that can work. So you take that table.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
We're uh, I'm sitting here going that. That's just I
didn't think about that until so much later, that here's
a guy so notorious and so famous, and I'm stand
and I'm gonna stand in an empty rest because there
was a lot of people on a Wednesday at Elterito
at eight thirty.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
I wonder why I'm standing. I'm standing right when you
walk in where anybody can walk in and go, oh,
I aint juice is here, right, all the juice is here.
So we sit down like I can't. But he's standing
right like lely walk in for the next thirty years
and there is O. J.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Simpson that then he got off on that idea of
what's going on in your head?
Speaker 1 (03:57):
Oh no, no, you see that. No, there's definitely some
a bit about the later years with with him, we
have to get into but listen, it wasn't awkward for him. No,
he didn't care. He can get him care. So we
sit down, We're like, oh my god, OJ, and we're
coming in and some people didn't see him, and I said, down,
look there's OJ. He's right there. He's right there. He's
right there. So when I the next day, I call
my grandparents because both my grandparents were alive, and my
(04:18):
grandfather was obsessed with the OJ trial. Like so like
we we didn't get along great after I left home
to move to syracusean and worked work in UH and
go to work at ESPN. But he was happy for
me and he was happy for my career that I
went to work at ESPN. And when he knew I
was working on the OJ trials a production assistant in AP,
(04:38):
he was I wanted to talk about every day, every.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Day, every day and you made behind the scene now.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
He just wanted to know what was going on? What,
what what happened today? What happened? Because I told you,
my grandfather watched the news at four, it's five, at six,
at ten and eleven, right, so I knew. I said,
he's gonna he's gonna flip when I tell him that
that I saw O J. Simpson. So I call on
the phone and he asked like, hey, Pop, it's me,
Hey Jase, what's going on?
Speaker 5 (05:00):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Tell Graham to pick up the phone. Why I gotta
tell you something. I can't tell you. I can tell
you who I saw Gloe. Pick up the phone, I
grammed the pick the phone. Hello, who is this Graham?
It's me, Oh Jason? How are you? Dah blah blah,
all right, all right, what happened? I go? So? I
had a softball game last night. We went in and
we went out. How'd you do? How'd you hit? What
did you what did you do?
Speaker 6 (05:20):
What?
Speaker 1 (05:20):
Three for four? What? Where'd you play? What'd you do?
Speaker 2 (05:23):
So?
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Uh Now, at that point he didn't care because I'm
playing beer League softball.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
It's not it wasn't high school in the middle.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
Why aren't you playing? How come you play third base
better than Yeah?
Speaker 4 (05:34):
Okay, damn it, Graham's I'm still playing for titles.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
So I called. So I called, and go. You're not
gonna believe it. But I had a softball game last
night and after we won, we went to Elteredo, which
is his restaurant. It's in Santa Monica, and my friends
and I walk inside and it's a restaurant where there's
a bar in the left and then you sit down
and eat on the right side of it. And I go,
you know who? He walked in and walked right past.
I can't believe it was standing there having a drink
(05:58):
with a woman. Was O. J. Simpson.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
And my grandfather goes like he was done, and my
grandmother and my grandmother.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
This is what she does of I try to give
it justice because this is this is the best. My
grandmother goes, be careful.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
What your grandma sounded like he didn't bunk her.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
That's what she does. She sounded like that. That was
the voice. But she told me be careful, like something
was gonna happen. I'm walking into her brother, all of it,
but she wanted me to. She wanted me to be
care She was still.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Thought you were gonna have a showdown with OJ. Be careful.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
I didn't try to tackle him, Grandma. I didn't try,
you know, I just I walked by and sat down.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
I just told me to be careful.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Told him he couldn't get two thousand on me. Yeah, yeah,
I know, I.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
Know someone's gonna pass in past that record. You just
watch you just watch your grandma thought you were hanging
out with like gangs. Now well no, no, no, see
here's the thing.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
No no, now, but LA to go back a few
months before that, and this is what was embarrassing for me,
is that the first weekend Ham and I, because we
hadn't been in La that long. We've been in LA
at that point for you, like five or six months.
The first week we moved LA, we moved into our
new apartment and we're hanging out. It was it was
near the beach and all of a sudden, like a
(07:08):
star wagon's trailer pulls up and a couple pulls up,
and you know, we don't know what's going on. We're like,
what is this And our next our downstairs neighbor says, oh,
they were shooting a movie here a few months ago,
and I think they're back to shoot a couple.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
To shoot some scenes. They said, they said they were
coming back in the next couple of weeks and if they.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
Can pick it care.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
We were like, okay, yeah, sure, So that's what I
was like, Oh okay, oh great, and I said, we said,
what's something. Do you know what the movie is called?
Speaker 1 (07:29):
Us? I think it's called Jerry Maguire. We were like, oh, okay,
what Jerry McGuire. I don't know. She goes, yeah, I
think Tom Cruise is in it. We're like, oh okay. Well,
so we're like maybe he's here. No, he can't be.
Here's no way he's here. There's no way he's here.
So we're just hanging out in downstairs talking to our neighbor,
and all of a sudden there's two big security guards
come walking around the corner, and all of a sudden,
(07:50):
he comes walking around the corner and he's dressed like
if you remember Jerry maguire, he's dressed like in the
scene when when things are going bad for him and
he and he and he's like staring out the window
looking for waiting for the fax machine and these his
glasses are all screwed up and he's in there. So
that's what the pickup shots they what do you need
to do with the dusk? And he walks by and
we're like, oh my god, it's Tom Cruise, and our
(08:11):
neighbor downstairs says, hey, can we get a picture, And
the security guard looks at us. He goes no, and
Tom Cruise looks around, sees that it's only four of
us and goes, yeah, yeah, yeah, look, come on, come on,
come on, let's do it.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
Let's do it.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Let's do it. Like wow, okay. So we took a
picture of the four of us and that was our
Christmas card that year, going, hey, Merry Christmas from Jason
Bamin and Tom and Tom Cruise. So I told my
grandparents that story, and then I didn't know this, but
my mom tells me this, like like a couple of
months after I tell that story to my grandfather, my
mom says to me, you have to watch the stories
you tell Pop. And I go why. He goes, because
(08:42):
he's telling it because my grandfather was still working at
the time, was a hairdresser. He goes, because he's telling
everybody whose hair he cuts that you're friendly with Tom
Cruise in lawsuit he moved to Los Angeles and now
you're friends with Tom Cruise.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
And I'm like, wait, what I'm telling everybody I moved
to La friends with Tom Cruise.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
I'm like, okay, people that you're taller than him. I was, no, dude,
I was no.
Speaker 4 (09:02):
I I definitely didn't sit down and we had a
recruitment video.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
I definitely was taller.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
Did you ask him if you can recreate these since
you were right by the beach, recreate the volleyball scene.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
I'll look, I'll be Goose. I'll wear I'll wear the
shirt and the and I'll wear the jeans. Y'all, I'll
be Goose in that cond.
Speaker 7 (09:20):
What are you doing? Nobody wants Nobody wants to picture that.
What are you doing?
Speaker 1 (09:24):
But like this, I'm sitting here going so everybody on
Staten Island where I'm from, thinks you know these people
that he knows because because now he's a hairdresser and
he knows so many people. He was a hairdresser for
like forty years. Like, they're gonna go everybody. But I
went to high school with or new Like yeah, Jason
moved to LA and he's friends with Tom Cruise. And
I'm like, oh, I gotta watch the story. And then
I said, and I said, wait a minute, I don't
(09:46):
really care if he tells that story people you get
here's some girls I would like him to make sure
know about this story from high school. Okay, here's girls
I want to know, right, if you run into any
of these parents or aunts or uncles or in any
way related. You tell these girls that I'm hanging out
with Tom Cruise, that's the ones I want to know.
Speaker 4 (10:05):
I'm living the high life, man on the high life
in l A. Look at me top cru.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
Just like that, he became friendly with Kelly Preston And.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
No, he was the only one. There was pickup shots.
Speaker 4 (10:18):
For that scene, and that was it, saying eventually you
would have been bellishing this story.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
Yeah I was.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
I was at the premiere. But just think about it.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
He went from meeting Cruise and family thinking you're hanging
out with Cruise, and now all of a sudden, you're
hanging out with h with a double murderer. They're like,
what's happened to Jason the last six months? He's going
he's gone down hill? Man, what's going on? Well, Cruise
was kind of boring compared, but but I mean, that's
(10:45):
that's something I can only imagine the reaction of all
of your group.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
We just won this softball.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
Yeah, we're coming in out.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
Right record record need a kind of thing.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
You know, how long did you hold his hand? No,
I didn't walked by Ojack. I walked by Ojack. You
didn't Charles Woodson him, Tom Cruise, I shook his hands
so thank you so much. Oh No, that was just once,
not no, like Curtis Martin, No, no, no, no, I
shook Tom Cruise said thank you like three times. He
wasn't wearing a hat.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
Curtis Martin was wearing one of those you meant.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
Tom Cruise, No, no, no Tom, and Sunglide No, no, he doesn't
wear a hat with the hair like that. I would
not have to know, not at all. Stole his Yeah,
that's why War of the Worlds didn't do that well.
He was wearing a baseball hat through most of it.
It doesn't work that way, and move doesn't work. But
but the whole thing with what like I like that
was one of the few moments in life when I
understand when people say yeah and then everything just was
(11:36):
slowed down and was in slow motion. And I never
understood what what people meant by that, What do you
mean it is in slow motion? But that moment for me,
when I walk in all of a sudden, O. J.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
Simpson is there and I go, whoo, did you all
just sit there over neck the whole time clocking him?
Speaker 1 (11:52):
We did was we sat that, we were huddled over
our drinks. Is going, what's he doing? Now? What's he doing? Now?
Who's the girl he's with? Can we talk? We told
that is who is that? Who is that? You get
up and walk by, You go up and walk and
order drinks and see if you can see who that is.
So it was like, who's gonna go up to the
bar and stand close without looking like you're standing right next?
We was again there was nobody at the bar.
Speaker 4 (12:11):
This is this is an empty this is an empty bar.
Then nobody is in at eight thirty at night, and we're.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Like, what do we do? What do we do? Seehim?
We'll see what he's drinking, what's she drinking? We gotta
see who she is. And this is before cell phones
camera phones, And this is like nineteen ninety six, nineteen
ninety six when when people were just getting cell phones
where you could play snake on it.
Speaker 4 (12:31):
Stop, don't don't just rop me. I'm playing snake on
this cell phone. Oh okay, I'm trying to text her.
You had to go through every letter on the on
the on the thing. If you wanted to text a
letter CE, you had to hit the A and then
the B and then wait for it on the one
and then click it. Uh So there was no way
you could take picture of that or take any because
I would easily have had something like that, But it
was it was just we just sacked there, like.
Speaker 3 (12:50):
Well, where was your polaroid instamatic? Wait for it?
Speaker 1 (12:56):
All right, I'm gonna shake it. I'm gonna shake it.
Don't look at it yet, don't look.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
We don't leave yet.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
This one might not be good. You wanted to develop that.
I don't know if it's looking any good. Oh, you
know you had your eyes called let's do it again.
It's like taking the glauck Homa test. The light that
would shine off of those things.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
Exit out about a fresca exit swollen dome. The Jason
Smith Show with Mike Carmon Love from the tyrec dot
Com Studios. We'll have more on oj and coming up next.

Speaker 1 (14:46):
Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon.
Speaker 4 (14:50):
Oh how happy was I today? The Mets thump the Braves,
they score sixteen runs. The Knicks beat the crap out
of the Celtics. We're going to the finals. Big day,
Mike Harmon, Big Day to Day Jalen Brunton with another
thirty nine MVP and this think about it. In to
nineteen ninety four, headlines are all about OJ and the names.
Speaker 1 (15:10):
You're right now. It's funny, you say, because we played
the We played the font open the font to start
the show tonight.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
And while everybody you always played where were you win?
Where you win?
Speaker 4 (15:22):
I think everybody remembers where they were when the OJ
verdict trial was the OJ verdict was read, and you
also remember where you were when the chase happened. The
Bronco Chase's Al Cowlings and OJ Simpson and I remember
where I was because it just happened to be at
the same time of as Game six of the NBA Finals,
(15:43):
the Nicks and the Rockets.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
You know what I was doing. I was funting, really
I was. This is when I was a production assistant.
That's fun. You know about the fun You were crying
because you know, if you were in charge of the
font you in charge of the graphics for a show.
And that was part of the.
Speaker 4 (15:57):
Part of the the wheel of assignments you did as
a pece ap at ESPN was you do to graphics.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
But they call it faunting. So I was really ready.
Speaker 4 (16:06):
Well they would they would call it because you when
you were temporary PA, or or before or in your
first sorry, in your first year, they would say you
would spend a month doing this, then a month doing this,
month to that, right, So so that was where you're
on the wheel. And so I was doing graphics. I
was faunting.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
And the whole thing is is the chase is going on,
and I'm watching the Knicks in the Rockets and I'm
going this is crazy and I'm getting And the argument was,
what's going to lead the show tonight? What do we
lead the show with? What a sports in our lead
to lead with the chase?
Speaker 4 (16:35):
And the next I go, this is the NBA Bleeping
Files and it's the next and everybody's like, are you kidding?
Speaker 1 (16:40):
What are you nuts? I remember somebody saying we'll be
lucky if we even get to the Knicks in the show.
I'm like, what are you crazy? Is it?
Speaker 4 (16:47):
But sure enough and now realizing how big a deal
it was with me with my Knicks goggles on.
Speaker 1 (16:52):
Yeah, the O. J. Simpson Chase was the whole show. Yeah,
And we did the NBA Finals and the Knicks one
forcing Game seven. I was like, okay, right, And I'll
always remember at the end, because I was doing graphics.
Is that somebody? I want to say it might have
been stuttering John from Howard Stern Show got into the
post game press conference, pat Riley's answering all these questions
(17:13):
for the Knicks, and you know, what do you think
about this? What do you think about this? And I
think it was stuttering John, who says who says, pat Riley,
do you think if oj had had had cut to
the left, he would have got away? And and pat
Riley goes, what and then here, get him out, get
him out, Get that guy out, get him out. And
they took him up well because pat Riley doesn't know
(17:33):
he just won the game, and now he's answering question
if OJ had cut to his left, what he have
gotten away?
Speaker 4 (17:37):
It's like, oh right, I mean, look, if pat Riley
had been wise to the chase, then he could have
answered it. He could have might have given you a
good response, could have been, might have gone to the
whiteboard and come up with a pretty good play to run.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
Now, I remember we were in an apartment.
Speaker 4 (17:51):
We had a bunch of folks over across from Ryan
Field up in Evanston, and TV's on, and all of
a sudden, the Knicks game goes to the picture and picture.
I started cursing up a scam, because like, what the
hell the next here? I don't care about this?
Speaker 1 (18:07):
See and I didn't. I didn't have that because I
had the I had two screens in front of me.
I mean, you didn't. I didn't care.
Speaker 4 (18:12):
Like I got the Knicks here and I got the
chase here. And after a while, honestly, the chase was boring,
like put the game. That was the first slipping if
you need that was the picture and picture the other way,
that was the first real chase that anybody really got
to see. Because now in the ensuing years when there's
car chases, when police are chasing somebody in difference, okay, everybody,
(18:35):
but that was the first time anybody would see not
not as you thought from the movies from Ron Burgundy.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
Yeah, this is this is ac. I got O J
in the car and you know what. The one thing
I remember from the time was when they started driving
through uh we are where he lived, driving driving driving
through uh Brentwood, is that the people on the side
of the road that knew it was coming, that were
standing there and waving because they knew the television cameras
(19:02):
come by. And I remember going, oh my god, what are
the people.
Speaker 4 (19:04):
They're right near a carr You've done that out here, Yeah,
you've done that out the back door here sports watching chase.
Speaker 6 (19:12):
No.
Speaker 1 (19:12):
I didn't realize at the time. I was like, oh
my god, I'm so scared for those people because they're
just they're there just to be on television. Hey look,
and they're waving is as they know the car is
driving by them. I'm going, oh my god, those people,
Oh my god. Did they realize Oh yeah, okay, we.
Speaker 4 (19:24):
Just drove by a wreck two weeks ago from a
car chase right outside the studio.
Speaker 1 (19:28):
Uhcs know, we had we had the ojam one screen
and the Knicks on the other screen. Doesn't sound like
you were watching the game. I was watching it. The
Knicks had it in hand. Nicks had it, and so
it was. It was okay, Knicks had the game in hand.
The Rockets won Game six. Then it was game five,
Game five, Game five, it was it was a game
the Knicks one. It was again the game the Knicks.
(19:49):
One was that it was game five. Hang on, hang on,
hang on, hang on. Anyway, Uh, there was game five,
because that's they asked pat Riley. Yeah, it was game
game five five, Game five, the Knicks up three to Yes,
they got through. Daddy lost Game six and game seven. Sorry,
I meant game five. Guess games my faults and uh,
but it was. But watching him both, I was like, okay.
(20:10):
And then I remember being mad after going and O
J Chase, Kicks are gonna win the championship. And now
now no one's even talking about it because oj was
in the chase in his car. Come on.
Speaker 4 (20:22):
Unfortunately for you, they didn't What do you mean fortunately
I would I wouldn't care if they wanted it got
and it got pushed now you got thirty years of
the chase.
Speaker 3 (20:31):
So wait, so this me.
Speaker 1 (20:32):
Now the Knicks are going to make it to the
finals and lose. Is that what you're telling me now? Mix?
Speaker 3 (20:36):
Yeh, A karmic thing is going.
Speaker 1 (20:38):
New York Go New York, Go go New York, Go
New York.
Speaker 3 (20:41):
Go now New York. No, I mean, you know, I
hate to say I told you so.
Speaker 4 (20:45):
Whatever, Just everybody coming around, you know, with another thirty
nine point performance trying to jump on your Jalen brunts
and manwagon. I'm telling you now, he's gonna finish like
eighteenth and voting just the way things work, behind Luca
and and Yo Kicch and everybody else. But he's had
a hell of a run. That's insane that he You
know what it is, Honestly, this is in an anti
(21:06):
New York bias. Hey, hey, I didn't say it, you did.
That's an anti Knicks bias. That's exactly what it is.
Because in the media there's certain teams that members of
the media just don't like. For one, we're also.
Speaker 3 (21:22):
Not going to get a lot of them a lot
of love.
Speaker 4 (21:23):
What a guy who claims to be your biggest fan
doesn't realize that they traded one guy's ass away months
ago and the other guy's been starting for forty yeas. Hey,
Grimes has been really good, Okay, Hartenstein coming off the bench, that's.
Speaker 1 (21:37):
Been what we need.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
He really what we need.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
That's what we need. No, Look, it's there's a you
could see just if if Jalen Brunson played anywhere else,
if Jalen Brunson was a Celtic, if he if he
played on the Lakers anyway, Look at Jalen Brunson. Look
for his size, but look how smart he is his
IQ on the court. He's not fast, but he's quick enough.
Look what he does. He'd be gushing. But because that's
(22:00):
the next speed.
Speaker 4 (22:01):
But because it's the Knicks and everybody gets sick and
tired of Knicks fans like.
Speaker 1 (22:05):
Me going go New York, go near I'm not going
to give him any credit. That's exactly why they're not.
It's the same thing for why Lebron and Ad don't
get credit when the Lakers play well. I just don't
like the You talk about them too much, Okay, but
we don't talk about Luca, We don't talk about uh
Yo kich as much as we talk about some of
these guys. So it's easy to pray.
Speaker 4 (22:26):
You brought up Dallas. Let's talk about the Cowboys. What
do we got, hey, Quent Grinds plays pretty well for
the Cowboys. Coming off the bench with the Cowboys, he'll
be terrific.
Speaker 1 (22:35):
Man.
Speaker 7 (22:35):
I'm glad you admit though that it's your fault. People
hate the Knicks. It's what I'm saying is it is
your fault. It's crazy, but that's the case. Is a
huge ant.
Speaker 1 (22:43):
I haven't won in fifty years anti Knicks, anti Lakers
bias and why because you parade around like you're great
when you're not.
Speaker 4 (22:50):
Thinking about the last You're not great. Even without Julius
Randall were great. I mean you decide, decide once and
for all. Do you ever hate that guy? No, it
doesn't know. Today shows right now, I don't have to.
I don't have to tell you that like you tried to,
you know, send a little soft clove the other day.
Speaker 3 (23:09):
It's like play came. We don't need it.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
I don't have to.
Speaker 3 (23:11):
We're running straight through we don't need that.
Speaker 1 (23:13):
All the narrative of this playoffs is look at the
Knicks running through teams and they don't even have Julius Randall.
That's gonna be the big Why the run, Why that's
the run? Why they hate us? That's the run. Go
go New York, Go, go New York, Go New York,
go go to it.
Speaker 4 (23:29):
You know.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
The funny thing is the one thing I remember from
going to New York or New York go is the Bulls.
What was it ninety ninety three after they won Scott
Williams the Bulls Parade and uh, this is after the
Bulls won the championship, right, So this is after the
Eastern Conference finals. They win the championship, and everybody gets
to speak at the you know, at the rally and
at the parade, and Scott Williams says, man, last round,
(23:53):
all we heard was go.
Speaker 4 (23:54):
New York, Go New York, Go, go New York, go
New York go.
Speaker 1 (23:58):
Well, yeah they're going, and everybody went crazy.
Speaker 4 (24:01):
I'm going Uh So that's when I say that, That's
not what I think of him saying, yeah, they're gone.
Speaker 1 (24:06):
Okay, but watch this year watch out all right, Yeah,
let's get the people that owen or go to New York.
Speaker 6 (24:11):
Go.
Speaker 1 (24:12):
So I'll have more and OJ coming up in a
few minutes. But as I mentioned Tom Brady. Well, I
didn't pick today. He did a podcast and today it
just so happened to break in a barber's chair getting
a haircut from a guy, all kinds of tatted up. Uh,
let's slip that. Hey, if the NFL called me at
some point coming back to play, isn't something I'm opposed
(24:36):
to one day.
Speaker 7 (24:37):
It is a situation, right, Maybe it's the forty nine ers.
Speaker 1 (24:40):
Maybe you know, head in to the playoffs. Offense is great.
Speaker 5 (24:42):
Patriots, somebody, somebody, you never know.
Speaker 1 (24:46):
Scott forbid, somebody goes down, would you pick up that phone.
I'm not opposed to it. If they would.
Speaker 5 (24:51):
I don't know if they're gonna let me if I
become an owner in the NFL team, But I don't know.
If I don't know, I'm always going to be a
good shape, always be able to throw the ball, so
to come for a little bit like MJ coming back.
Speaker 2 (25:02):
I don't know if they let me, but I wouldn't
be opposed to it.
Speaker 1 (25:06):
There it is Tom Brady saying I would not be
opposed to it.
Speaker 4 (25:12):
That was good because non deposed to Twitter's New England
Patriots just a little off the top, and it was
an old picture of Brady with long hair, you know,
talking throwbacks whatever. He said, fifty thousand likes and I'll unretire,
and he had that scratched out, grow it back out
with a bunch of crying, laughing emojis. I'm gonna work
to that haircut myself. See if I can't recreate such greatness,
(25:35):
because you know what that does for me makes me
feel young again. Tom Brady's back on a football field. Sure, yeah,
means that I'm not that old. I could squint and
I couldn't be able to tell him from you.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
No, no, no.
Speaker 4 (25:46):
But the point is if he's playing, so I need
Lebron to play the like he's fifty, because as long
as he's out there, I don't feel so damn old.
Speaker 1 (25:54):
The Final Cut podcast, which that is from, And it's
funny that he mentions Mike Jordan there, because I'll tell
you what, it seems like he's got in common with
Michael Jordan. That is not a great thing. When Jordan retired,
came back, retired again, came back, Jordan had a competition
(26:16):
issue that he could never find. How do I translate
the competition I had on the basketball court into what
I do after my career is over? Right.
Speaker 4 (26:27):
He struggled with that, which is why he retired unretired, retired, unretired,
and Campbell a lot try, yeah, and trying to figure
out how to be to own a team, front office,
own a team. Just never he never figured that out.
Kobe Bryant was the same way. What's he going to do?
But Kobe was.
Speaker 1 (26:40):
Succeeding at it. He found a way.
Speaker 4 (26:41):
He was doing a lot of stuff for women's sports,
the mom but basketball academy, and he was away from
basketball doing things he wanted an oscar so Kobe found
that was the other guy. I'm saying, what's he going
to do after there's no more game? Because he's as
competitive as anybody else. But he found a way. But
what Brady's got the thing is is that he's got
that competition an issue that now what does he do
(27:02):
because he's now with someone who retired, came back, retired
and now wants to make.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
Sure the door is open that hey, just in case. Now,
I'm not saying I want to do eighteen games, but
end of the season, if you're a playoff team or
if you're New England the Raiders, because the first team
the guy brought up with San Francisco. Hey, if the
quarterback is hurt, would you play. I'm not opposed to it.
So he wants people to know if he wants. He
(27:28):
wants people to know that if you have quarterback issues
near the end of the season.
Speaker 4 (27:32):
You're really good and you're a playoff team. Yeah, I
could still do it, Like he's.
Speaker 1 (27:38):
Still holding out hope that I can play in the
NFL and still do other things. I can be that
part time guy, kind of like Roger Clemens wanted to
do near the end of his Yankee career, where it was,
you know, I don't want to pitch until the middle
of the season. I want to basically sit home and
do nothing and then ye come back and pitch it off.
Speaker 4 (27:54):
Like veteran players now, they have no desire to go
to training camp and if they missed the first couple
of weeks doesn't matter.
Speaker 3 (28:00):
It's seventeen games.
Speaker 4 (28:01):
But you can see Brady is The first thing to
say is he has he has difficulty with retirement. What's
going to keep him happy? He was always about competition.
The great winners are always driven and what do you
do when it's done? But that same juice when you're done.
Speaker 1 (28:17):
When you're done, you're done. And look at his second retirement.
He's walking on the beach at six o'clock in the morning. Hey, guys,
that's it. You only get one of these. By second one.
I'm done.
Speaker 4 (28:24):
I'm walking away Like I never thought after that he
was really really dumbe.
Speaker 1 (28:28):
And here he is now saying.
Speaker 4 (28:29):
I wouldn't be opposed to it, Like if you would
say I'm done, no, no, no, I'm retired. I'm gonna
buy a football team offan I'm done. No.
Speaker 1 (28:37):
Still he's saying, I wouldn't be opposed to it. Why
would you say that unless you know you want teams
having the back of their mind. Okay, if something happens,
because Brady knows, look what we saw last year. How
many quarterbacks started for team sixty's some quarterback back to back.
If you're the if you're the Browns the end of
last year and you could and you're sitting, what do
we do? Hey, Tom Brady wants to go play now
(28:57):
all the teams know, all the teams in the NFL. No,
if we're great and we lose a quarterback, Brady might
want to come play for us. Like he's like now
his chance of going from zero percent playing to playing.
Like now, it's like a fifty to fifty deal because
you know there's gonna be a team or teams that's
really good quarterback issues at the end, quarterbacks out because
(29:19):
they get her all the time. Now, I think, top
in the air, you're gonna go back and play. You
got a chance he's gonna go back and play. I
really it could finally happen. A quarterback worth his weight
and salt. Aaron Rodgers, guy from Chicago. Aaron Rodgers says, no,
I'm going to politics now or whatever else. All right,
you leaving December, Tom Brady, we got it. Aaron Rodgers story.
(29:40):
Like that's like now, like his chance of going his
chance of never playing again went from his chance of playing.
It went from zero to fifty to fifty. Because somebody
in contention with quarterback issues in December. We'll call him
well staying in shape. Right, and while he looks at
the broadcast booth and everything else, I'm slamming that door,
(30:04):
especially after you watched, because as he's studying for the
from the last two years footage, right, you start doing
mock games or whatever.
Speaker 3 (30:11):
It's a lot of.
Speaker 4 (30:12):
Crappy quarterbacking, which is why we're talking about five, six
and just seven guys.
Speaker 1 (30:20):
Get hurt.
Speaker 4 (30:21):
Normally, it's what nine to twelve quarterbacks actually come through unscathed.
And that's that's a bit variable year to year, but
for the most part, you're turning things over and most
of those replacements are so bad you basically say, well,
our starter's done.
Speaker 3 (30:38):
Are years done?
Speaker 4 (30:39):
Well, now, if you've got him floating out in the
lab and getting himself ready and work together, I said,
preparing for the work at Fox, no doubt, put a
little more fire back in the belly going this is
what passes for starting quarterback Right now, I'm better than this.
I may not be able to move latterie worth a
damn at all, but I'm in now.
Speaker 1 (31:00):
How would Brady do if he did come back after
being away for a whole year? He says, I'm always
going to be in shape, I'm always gonna be able
to throw the ball. After being away for so long,
how how would Brady do? The answer is going to
surprise you on that. We got that coming up next
right here, Jason.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific, Fox.
Speaker 4 (31:25):
Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with my best friend,
Mike Harmon.
Speaker 1 (31:29):
Hugh Aaron Rodgers, live from the Tirerag dot com studios.
You know, we started the conversation a few minutes ago
about Tom Brady, who did a podcast that dropped today,
the Final Cut Podcast, in which he was asked while
in the barber's chair, Hey, end of the season, team
needs a quarterback. They give you a call, do you
(31:49):
come back and play? And I think Brady surprised a
lot of people by saying this one day.
Speaker 7 (31:54):
It is a situation, right, Maybe it's the forty nine ers,
maybe you know, head into the playoffs, offense is great.
Speaker 5 (32:00):
Patriots, somebody somebody Raiders would be you never know, Scott forbid,
somebody goes down.
Speaker 1 (32:05):
Would you pick up that phone. I'm not opposed to it.
If they would, I don't know if they're.
Speaker 5 (32:09):
Gonna let me if I become an owner in the
NFL team, But I don't know. If I don't know,
I'm always going to be a good shape. I always
be able to throw the ball. So to come in
for a little bit like MJ coming back, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (32:20):
If they let me.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
But I wouldn't be opposed.
Speaker 1 (32:22):
To it, all right, Zarah's from the Deep I said
final Cut the Deep Cut podcast. Uh, Tom Brady not
opposed returning late in the season. He name dropped New England,
name dropped the Raiders team he's trying to buy. Yeah.
He was first asked about San Francisco. So those three
teams are out there, Like, hey, if you said that,
and he was like, yeah, these teams first, he said
New England. When I come back and play for New England.
(32:43):
Funny how he left the Jets off because they're going
to need a quarterback? Oh well, he would play. Are
you kidding? If the Jets are in first place in
December and Aaron Rodgers gets hurt and they called him,
he would come running. He would come running to the
Jets with that defense first place, with that defensive Garrett
Wilson and Mike Williams would be making his debut that week,
sometime in the first week of December.
Speaker 4 (33:02):
He'd be so excited. Man, come on, Uh, how would
Brady do if he does come back? I really thought
you were gonna drop a Howard Bermann and TJ clearly
a man named Brady not.
Speaker 1 (33:14):
Uh, Brady would be just fine coming back after a
year and a half away, because well, how can you
say that Joe Flacco thirty nine years old, sitting on
his couch for most of last year, not signed in
the off season, going into the regular season, not signed,
shows up midway through the season, and what does he do?
(33:35):
Hey wins games for the Browns, throws the ball really well.
Sometimes when you have a particular skill set, it's always
going to translate, and.
Speaker 3 (33:45):
There's a lot of times where cannot be set.
Speaker 1 (33:47):
You can't. I still can't get over how he's able
to find his daughter when she was in Europe and
he was in the Unite.
Speaker 4 (33:52):
I mean really, but he translated that set of skills
into like another direct but thirty eight direct to video movie.
Speaker 1 (33:58):
Yeah, but taken. He made it seem so like I
could do that.
Speaker 3 (34:01):
Well, he had a geo tracker on it.
Speaker 1 (34:03):
If there's somebody I could find somebody if they disappeared
in France and I was in the United to fly.
Speaker 4 (34:09):
Doesn't speak the language, has no currency. He is, Uh,
he would be just if Joe Flacco is just fine.
Tom Brady would have Flacco turned the ball over a bunch,
but that was his persona before. Now when it comes
to Brady, what what amazes me is this story started
to swirl over the course of the day. How many
people get all up in their feels that he would
(34:30):
even open the door to this and consider it. I
bet you on a given day he throws more footballs
than most starting Warnack, he still doesn't in the NFL
Like that's just part of who he is. Waking up,
getting his work out and getting it done. And if
he wants to play until he's one hundred and twelve,
I don't give a damn no. If he can still
(34:50):
physically make the throws and make plays, who's he hurting?
Is he taking a job Tim Tebow and Triple A?
Oh my god, they're selling tickets.
Speaker 1 (35:02):
Well, there's the whole thing. He's not gonna do it.
He's already said, listen, I don't want to do it
for a whole season. I guarantee you he doesn't want
to do it. But now if I can be the hey,
I'll play at the end of a year if you
made men.
Speaker 4 (35:15):
Not only that, but if he did it this year,
what's the stopping from doing it the year after?
Speaker 1 (35:19):
That's the thing, you know, I'm gonna be around if
a team needs me. Yeah, I would do it, and
he would be fine. He'll still be able to throw
the ball. Is he gonna throw four touchdowns? A wee
can throw for three hundred and seventy five yards. No,
but could he produce like Flacco last year? Because you're
playing with a good team around you, I don't have
to worry about getting back into shape, you know, because
(35:40):
I'm still doing workouts. I'm a quarterback. It's different for
quarterbacks and our other positions. If you are a defensive
back or a running back or a wide receiver, there's
working out and then there's getting in football shape. Brady's
had this for over twenty years. He is a quarterback.
There's not as much training. It's why guys can you know,
look quarterback, punters, kickers, they can sit around, show up
and hey, I'm on my couch, but I can suddenly
(36:00):
play the next week if you need me to. It's
just a different skill set that allows you to jump
in and do that. And he would be fun. He
would have That's exactly who he would be. He would
have a Joe Flacco on the Browns type effect, but
maybe more so because he was a better quarterback than
Flacco was, there'd be more level of belief in Brady.
And he's only going to a team that's really good,
So yeah, he would do really well coming off. And
(36:21):
I'm telling you people want to understand the chances of
him playing now just went through the roof, because went
from zero to at least because somebody will call. Because
somebody's gonna be really good in December and somebody, somebody ease,
will lose their quarterback because that's what we saw and
now call Brady. The only thing that I can see
is if it happens too early, if what looks like
a really good team loses a guy, like at the
(36:43):
end of September, is Brady gonna be up for that? Yeah,
I don't know. But Thanksgiving December, Hey we'll lose a guy. Yes,
I'm in. You're going to the playoffs. I want to
play in the playoffs, and a thing we run, I'll
come back and play. So it's going to be a
ramp up period.
Speaker 4 (36:57):
So even if it happened at the end of September,
might not be ready till the end of October.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
Yah.
Speaker 4 (37:01):
But what if by the end of October comes you're
not good, like you know, like like might be two.
He wants to go to a team that I am
sure is going to be playing in December and then
playing into January. Like he's not gonna risk I'm coming
back at the end of October and the team that
was six and two suddenly is six and six. You know,
I'm not gonna that's the Jets. I'm not gonna do that.
There would have to be a team that we're going
to the playoffs. We're really good. You don't have to
(37:24):
play for very long. Show up first couple weeks. You
can hand the ball off. If we lose a couple
of games. It's fine until you get your legs under
you because instead of because we'll go from nine and
three to nine and five, we're fine, Like that's when
he will come back. See I What I love also
about this is since he's not currently destroying your Jets,
you're recognizing the greatness that is Tom Brady.
Speaker 1 (37:45):
See, I'm thinking he's gonna come back in and something's
that come here for having Rogers? Rogers? Is he gonna
make it a whole season?
Speaker 3 (37:50):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (37:52):
Coming in. We'll let Brady coming in would be awesome
Brady coming in December. Oh Man, Brady getting the Jets
at Super Bowl if DA c L can give you
a Zachae exit out by the Fresco Exit Swolling Dome.
Speaker 4 (38:05):
Coming up next, a huge story that's going to disappear
very soon Fox
